Aborted babies incinerated to heat UK hospitals

The remains of more than 15,000 babies were incinerated as 'clinical waste' by hospitals in Britain with some used in 'waste to energy' plants

The bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried babies were incinerated as clinical waste, with some even used to heat hospitals, an investigation has found.

Ten NHS trusts have admitted burning foetal remains alongside other rubbish while two others used the bodies in ‘waste-to-energy’ plants which generate power for heat.

Last night the Department of Health issued an instant ban on the practice which health minister Dr Dan Poulter branded ‘totally unacceptable.’

At least 15,500 foetal remains were incinerated by 27 NHS trusts over the last two years alone, Channel 4’s Dispatches discovered.

The programme, which will air tonight, found that parents who lose children in early pregnancy were often treated without compassion and were not consulted about what they wanted to happen to the remains.

One of the country’s leading hospitals, Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge, incinerated 797 babies below 13 weeks gestation at their own ‘waste to energy’ plant. The mothers were told the remains had been ‘cremated.’

Another ‘waste to energy’ facility at Ipswich Hospital, operated by a private contractor, incinerated 1,101 foetal remains between 2011 and 2013.

They were brought in from another hospital before being burned, generating energy for the hospital site. Ipswich Hospital itself disposes of remains by cremation.

“This practice is totally unacceptable,” said Dr Poulter.

“While the vast majority of hospitals are acting in the appropriate way, that must be the case for all hospitals and the Human Tissue Authority has now been asked to ensure that it acts on this issue without delay.”

Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director, has written to all NHS trusts to tell them the practice must stop.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, has also written to the Human Tissue Authority to ask them make sure that guidance is clear.

And the Care Quality Commission said it would investigate the programme's findings.

Prof Sir Mike Richards, Chief Inspector of Hospitals, said: “I am disappointed trusts may not be informing or consulting women and their families.

“This breaches our standard on respecting and involving people who use services and I’m keen for Dispatches to share their evidence with us.

“We scrutinise information of concern and can inspect unannounced, if required.”

A total of one in seven pregnancies ends in a miscarriage, while NHS figures show there are around 4,000 stillbirths each year in the UK, or 11 each day.

Ipswich Hospital Trust said it was concerned to discover that foetal remains from another hospital had been incinerated on its site.

A spokeswoman said: “The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust does not incinerate foetal remains.”

She added that the trust “takes great care over foetal remains”

A spokesman for the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said that trained health professionals discuss the options with parents ‘both verbally and in writing.’

"The parents are given exactly the same choice on the disposal of foetal remains as for a stillborn child and their personal wishes are respected,” they added.

Canadian aborted babies incinerated in Oregon waste-to-energy facility to provide electricity

The British Columbia Health Ministry has admitted that the remains of babies destroyed by abortion in B.C. facilities are ending up in a waste-to-power facility in the United States, providing electricity for residents of Oregon.

The province’s Health Ministry said in an email to the B.C. Catholic that “biomedical waste” shipped to the U.S. to be incinerated includes “human tissue, such as surgically removed cancerous tissue, amputated limbs, and fetal tissue.”

“The ministry understands that some is transferred to Oregon. There it is incinerated in a waste-to-energy plant,” the email stated.

The ministry said that contractors handling the province’s “biomedical waste” follow “health and safety protocols, as well as federal, provincial, and local regulations.”

Kristan Mitchell, executive director of the Oregon Refuse and Recycling Association, told the B.C. Catholic that the “biomedical waste” likely ends up at the Covanta Marion waste-to-energy facility in Oregon since it is the only facility that uses waste to power the grid. The facility confirmed that it still receives and incinerates B.C. medical waste.

The power facility, located in Brookes just off the I-5, burns waste in two massive boilers at a temperature of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat transfers into water tubes, which creates steam to drive turbines. The turbines generate electricity.

A 2007 article about the Marion waste-to-energy facility that appeared in the Willamette Live — ironically titled “Burn, Baby, Burn” — stated that at the time the incinerator burned about 800 tons (1,764,000 pounds) of medical waste per year.

“Medical waste is brought to the facility in sealed boxes and is carried to the furnace on a conveyor belt which layers it with the rest of the solid waste being processed,” the article states.

Locals at the time protested the “importation and burning of medical waste,” expressing concern about breathing “toxic emissions.”

The news comes one month after the remains of more than 15,000 aborted babies were found to have been incinerated, along with other “medical waste,” to heat and generate power for British hospitals.

County Launches Probe Into Why Aborted Babies Were Burned for Electricity, “We’re Horrified”

The government is famous for moving slowly and throwing up red tape as it moves along. That was not at all the case these past 24 hours.

News broke that British Columbia was sending their aborted and miscarried babies, along with the rest of their medical waste, to a plant in Brooks, Oregon where they would be burned to generate electricity for the area’s residents.

burningwaste5The Marion County Commissioners heard about it for the first time yesterday, April 23, at 4 p.m. They immediately called Oregon Right to Life to express their horror and avow their lack of knowledge of the practice.

They sent out a press release announcing they had put an immediate halt to the burning of the medical “waste” and scheduled an emergency meeting for this morning at 9 a.m.

Commissioner Janet Carlson opened the meeting excusing the lack of advance notice about the meeting.

She said: “We called an emergency meeting because this is an emergency. We need to deal with it now.” Commissioner Sam Brentano said the “waste-to-energy” plant was intended to efficiently destroy waste and, in the process, generate electricity, but the plant was “never intended to be a destruction of human fetal tissue.”

The contract with Stericycle, the company bringing the waste from B.C. and other places in the Northwest, has been in place for the past 5-7 years. The “waste,” from sharps to amputated digits to aborted babies, is put into red bags at the facilities (abortion clinics, hospitals, etc) where it is “collected,” then sealed into boxes. The boxes are not opened again. They are brought to the plant and burned in a process that generates electricity.

Commissioner Carlson said: “I am horrified. There are not enough strong words to describe my feelings. This will not continue…I don’t even want to call it ‘material;’ these are babies.” She also said she wants to pursue an in-depth investigation into “who knew, when they knew and how long they knew.”

The commissioners were in agreement that the acceptance of any “fetal tissue” must permanently cease. They have started their legal team drawing up new ordinances reflecting this and will either sever their contracts with Stericycle or give the company the opportunity to amend the contracts to disallow the inclusion of the remains of aborted and miscarried babies along with legitimate medical waste.

Commissioner Carlson reiterated her horror and her intent to immediately and permanently end import of these aborted and miscarried babies into Marion County. She said the practice was “disgusting and [showed] total disrespect of human life.”

Oregon Right to Life will be in attendance at the public hearing for the new ordinance reflecting these changes. Officials Outraged Plant Burning Aborted Babies for Electricity: “Ultimate Disrespect to Innocence”

Local officials in central Oregon are upset that an energy plant is reportedly burning aborted babies from Canada to generate electricity.

Following a LifeNews report that received national attention, the Marion County Board of Commissioners issued a statement indicating it will temporarily halt all burning of “medical waste” while it investigates. Today the Marion County Board of Commissioners is holding an emergency meeting to determine how the Covanta Waste-to-Energy Facility was authorized to burn medicate “waste” that includes the remains of aborted babies.

burningwaste4“We are outraged and disgusted that this material could be included in medical waste received at the facility,” said Commissioner Janet Carlson. “We did not know this practice was occurring until today. We are taking immediate action and initiating discussions with Covanta Marion to make certain that this type of medical waste is not accepted in the future.”

In a new interview with the Associated Press, Kristy Anderson, a British Columbia Health Ministry spokeswoman, said that, in addition to the bodies of aborted babies, the medical waste also includes amputated limbs and cancerous tissue. She said the provincial government agency has a contract with a firm that sends the waste to Oregon.

A local report from Oregon has more on the background and comments from outraged local officials:

The county has been using the Covanta facility in Brooks, to turn waste into energy for years. The county uses municipal waste from homes and businesses plus medical waste as incinerator fuel to produce power.

Marion County Chair Sam Brentano says if that is the case it cannot be tolerated. He immediately stopped the burning of all medical waste while the county looks into the report. An emergency commission meeting was scheduled for Thursday morning.

“Bottom line I’m not going to facilitate abortion,” said Brentano. “It’s the ultimate disrespect to innocence.”

The burner company Covanta told KGW Wednesday night that while they burn the waste, it’s the county that decides what trash gets incinerated.

“Marion County contracts for and delivers medical waste to the facility and Covanta has no responsibility for the program,” the company said. “Covanta is shocked by these allegations and is discontinuing the receipt of this waste stream until we have been assured by the county that this alleged material is not being delivered to the facility.”

According to its website, it processes 550 tons per day of municipal solid waste, generating up to 13 megawatts of energy sold to Portland General Electric.

County spokeswoman Jolene Kelley said medical waste has been included in the program for some time, but the commissioners never had any indication that fetal tissue might be included. “We learned that today,” she said.

Fmr employee: Oregon officials had to know they were incinerating babies, ‘there was so much blood’

A former temporary worker at the Oregon plant accused of incinerating aborted babies has said county officials “had to” know the facility generated power by burning fetal tissue.

Bud Waterman, a temporary worker at Covanta Marion, Inc., in the town of Brooks, remembered how the extra-long Stericycle trailers would pull up to the waste-to-power plant transporting “biomedical waste” from British Columbia.

“It would make you sick, especially if you had to clean it up or have to pull a box off the trailer,” he told local KOIN 6 TV news. “There was so much blood.”

The definition of “biomedical waste” being shipped to the United States includes aborted fetal remains, the British Columbia Health Ministry confirmed to the B.C. Catholic newspaper.

The mothers of the aborted children were led to believe the babies would be cremated, KOIN reported.

Marion County officials expressed their shock upon learning of the arrangement. “We are outraged and disgusted that this material could be included in medical waste received at the facility,” Marion County Commissioner Janet Carlson said on Wednesday.

But Waterman isn't convinced by the denials. “They knew it, they had to,” he said. “I don’t see how they could not know it.”

County Commissioner Janet Carlson demanded answers. "I want to know who knew, when they knew, how long they had known this was going on," she said.

Commissioners met in a special session Thursday to immediately prohibit the use of medical waste until the statute can permanently exclude the use of aborted fetal tissue.

Commissioner Sam Brentano was quick to point out, “No rule or law has been broken” by Covanta Marion.

The facility burns an estimated 550 tons of waste each day, only a tiny portion of which is medical waste. The plant heats the refuse to temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit to boil water or generate energy.

The Oregon story follows just one month after reporters revealed that the remains of more than 15,000 aborted babies were incinerated, along with other “medical waste,” to heat and generate power for British hospitals.

Company Stericycle, Known for Burning, Illegally Dumping Aborted Babies, to Dispose of Ebola Waste

A controversial medical waste company known for its incineration and illegal dumping of aborted babies recently received a permit from the U.S. government to dispose of Ebola-contaminated waste in Texas.

As previously reported, Thomas Eric Duncan of Liberia, who was visiting America for a time, was admitted to Texas Presbyterian Hospital earlier this month after displaying symptoms that later tested positive for the Ebola virus. He had visited the emergency room two days prior and was given medication and released.

When Duncan’s condition worsened, he returned to the hospital and was officially admitted. After being tested for Ebola and found to be positive for the virus, the city contracted with a hazardous materials company to clean the apartment where Duncan, who later died, was staying. A second company was then contracted to actually dispose of the waste—Stericycle, the nation’s largest medical waste company—which also was granted a permit from the U.S. Department of Transportation to handle and transport the contaminated items.

However, the company has been under fire from pro-life citizens nationwide for servicing abortion facilities across the country and burning the discarded remains of aborted children, placed in containers marked as “pathological waste,” at their incineration plants.

Stericycle was fined over $42,000 in 2011 after the company was found to be illegally dumping aborted babies into a municipal landfill in Austin, Texas with household and commercial garbage. The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) found Stericycle liable for “failure to prevent the disposal of treated fetuses at a municipal solid waste landfill” and “failure to comply with permit conditions.”

That same year, Grand Jury documents released by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office revealed that Stericycle had been disposing of fetal remains for convicted murderer Kermit Gosnell for years. The Presentment outlined that staff were assigned the task of preparing the boxes for the company’s arrival.

“James Johnson, who worked for Gosnell since 2001, testified that his duties included collecting the red biohazard bags of fetal remains and putting them in boxes for pickup by an outside firm, Stericycle,” it stated.

The Campaign to Stop Stericycle, a pro-life effort that has been calling upon Stericycle since 2010 to stop servicing abortion facilities, reports that it has evidence that the babies collected from Gosnell’s facility also were dumped into landfills.

Earlier this year, the Marion County Board of Commissioners in Brooks, Ore. canceled its contract with Stericycle after learning that aborted babies were possibly being burned at a local waste-to-energy plant. While plant officials denied that fetal remains were included in the containers brought to the facility from Canada, the outlet B.C. Catholic reported that they were advised by the British Columbia Health Ministry that “biomedical waste [which includes] human tissue, such as surgically removed cancerous tissue, amputated limbs and fetal tissue [is] disposed of through appropriate contracted providers.”

“I believe they were in there,” Commissioner Sam Bretano told the Portland Tribune. “We’d like to have that confidence [that they weren't], but I don’t know how we could, other than tearing into the containers. I have no confidence that fetuses haven’t been in there.”

Now, the U.S. Department of Transportation has granted a permit to Stericycle to haul Texas’ Ebola waste, which has caused insecurity even from government officials in other states. Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster filed a temporary general retraining order in court  to prevent the company from bringing the Ebola-contaminated materials into the state.

“This facility has a history of violations in the handling of medical waste,” Koster said in a statement. “We should not allow this company to transport Ebola waste into our state without absolute assurances of safety.”

“Can we really trust a company that illegally dumped babies in a landfill in order to save money to properly dispose of Ebola waste?” reporter LJ Devon also wrote in a recent article, citing concerns about Stericycle’s disposal of aborted babies. “Why did this unethical company get the contract?”
