1Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. I've always wondered what this passage means every time I read it...until today when I feel I have a much better understanding of it(I think). I'll give a couple of examples here(they may not be the best examples, but you know what I'm trying to get at here)... 1) Just about every "church" I've been too - almost every time I point out to someone how the pastor is doing certain things wrong, it's not so much they say "Judge not lest ye be judged..." - but they say stuff like, "The other leaderships in the church likely rebuked him for it, so we don't have to say anything".(but somehow these pastors continue to do these wrongs) 2) I once knew a professing Christian who left his church b/c it was getting involved with Rick Warren nonsense - so the next one he chose seemed OK...pastor preaching the proper salvation message, watching end times prophecies, firmly pre-trib, etc. However, HOWEVER - he did Rick Warren's "40 Days of Purpose" 'studies'. No, his church didn't yoke up with Warren(like the previous one), but just did his "studies" one time and that was that. But nonetheless the pastor just acted like he did it "out of curiosity"(and noone questioned it). Like I said - these aren't exactly the best examples(as these are 501c3, NIV-preaching churches) - but nonetheless here's the point I'm trying to drive home... Like this passage says, as believers, we don't lose our salvation - but nonetheless it still says that if a believer sin a sin, then they should be rebuked and exhorted for it(if I understand the context of this passage correctly), right? Ultimately - if they don't get rebuked and exhorted for their wrong-doings, they're going to keep on doing what they're doing and go into back-slide mode. I bring this up b/c I've went through this in many of my experiences(both as a lost man, and a saved man) - every time I or others in group settings would give someone the benefit of the doubt over something they really did wrong, over the long haul it would leaven the entire lump of the basket. Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? Gal 5:8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. Gal 5:9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. Gal 5:10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
