Mel Gibson Planning 'Passion of the Christ' Sequel

Mel Gibson and writer Randall Wallace are working on a sequel to The Passion of the Christ that will tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus, Wallace tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Wallace, nominated for an Academy Award for scripting Gibson's 1995 best picture Oscar winner Braveheart, on Thursday (reluctantly) confirmed rumors that he has begun to write a script for a story about the resurrection, telling THR that the project is becoming too difficult to keep under wraps.

Wallace, who most recently directed and co-wrote the 2014 faith-based drama Heaven Is for Real, says he and Gibson began to get serious about a sequel to The Passion, the most successful independent film of all time, while making Hacksaw Ridge, which Gibson directed and Wallace co-wrote. Hacksaw Ridge opens in November and centers on World War II Army medic Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Wallace was a religion major at Duke University and says the resurrection was a specialty of his. "I always wanted to tell this story," he says. "The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell."

A rep for Gibson declined to comment on the filmmaker-actor's involvement in a Passion sequel.

The Passion, Gibson's story of the persecution and crucifixion of Jesus, was released in 2004 by the independent Newmarket Films and earned a whopping $612 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget. Since then, many in Hollywood have presumed a sequel would someday be made, but Gibson has moved on to other projects.

Rumors swirled anew last month when Gibson was a surprise guest at Liberty University's graduation ceremony to do an advance screening of Hacksaw Ridge and was asked about a Passion follow-up. He expressed interest in making a sequel but was not specific about his involvement. Wallace says demand in the Christian community influenced his and Gibson's willingness to do another film.

"The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger," Wallace says.

No studio or financial backing has been lined up for the project, which is still in the early script stage. But Wallace indicates there are several financiers interested in investing. "It's too early to talk money," he adds. "This is such a huge and sacred subject."

In February, Sony released Risen, which tells the story of the resurrection, though Gibson wasn't involved. The movie made $46 million worldwide on a $20 million budget.

Mel Gibson Says Next Project May be ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Sequel

 In a surprise appearance, Mel Gipson told evangelist Greg Laurie at SoCal Harvest at Angel Stadium that he is working on a sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.”

"We're talking about that. Of course, that is a huge undertaking," Gibson said. "And you know, it's not the 'Passion 2.' It's called 'The Resurrection.' Of course, that's a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we don't want to just do a simple rendering of it — you know, read what happened."

Laurie asked Gipson about the possible sequel after screenwriter Randall Wallace told Hollywood Reporter that he and Gipson were working on a sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.”

“The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell,” Wallace told Hollywood Reporter.

Gipson told Laurie that Wallace is “up to the task” of writing the second film.

“He is also, as well as a brilliant writer, he is a great director. He directed 'We Were Soldiers' and 'Heaven is for Real' and stuff. So, he is a good writer and director."

Laurie also talked to Gipson about his new movie, set to release in November, called “Hacksaw Ridge.” The movie, based on a true story, follows U.S. Army medic Desmond Doss during World War II.

"Desmond Doss received the Congressional Medal of Honor for courage under fire. He was singular in that most guys who get the Medal of Honor, they do something in a split second and it's a decision that they do something courageous and heroic," Gibson said. "Desmond did what he did over and over and over again in different places in the Pacific. His greatest achievement was in Okinawa, where he saved a lot of men.

"Another interesting thing about Desmond was that he was a conscientious objector and he went into battle without a weapon as a medic and what he did was super-natural and He only did it through faith. He was armed only with his faith."

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross, his girlfriend of two years, are expecting a baby early next year, the star’s rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Already a father of eight kids, Gibson, 60, is thrilled to add to his brood.

“Mel and Rose are so excited about the baby,” says a friend close to the couple.

“Mel loves being a dad and he and Rose can’t wait to be parents together. The last two years have been some of his happiest years he’s ever had.”

This will be a first child for Ross, 26, a writer and former champion equestrian vaulter.

Actor Jim Caviezel: 'The Passion of the Christ' Sequel Will Be 'The Biggest Film in History'

is this another catholic nun's vision?

 Christian actor Jim Caviezel has spoken about the sequel to The Passion of the Christ, saying it will be “the biggest film in history.”

Although a release date for the film has not yet been given, anticipation is already building.

The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson and starring Caviezel as Jesus, came out in 2004--14 years ago already, according to The Daily Wire.

The film grossed over $370 million, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made in the U.S., so Caviezel’s prediction that the sequel will be “the biggest film in history” has some credence.

Although Caviezel didn’t reveal much, he did cryptically remark, “There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience. It’s great. Stay tuned.”

The sequel will reportedly focus on the Resurrection. In 2016, Gibson said, “The Resurrection. Big subject. We’re trying to craft this in a way that’s cinematically compelling and enlightening so that it shines new light, if possible, without creating some weird thing.”

Caviezel is an outspoken Christian who is often involved in faith-related projects. Last month, he spoke at the Fellowship of Catholic University Students SLS Leadership Conference where he told the crowd, “I want you to go out into this pagan world, I want you to have the courage to step into this pagan world and shamelessly express your faith in public. The world needs proud warriors animated by their faith."
