Harvey out, Irma in, watching the Gulf (again) and a cold front
August 31, 2017 6:07 AM

Harvey is finally moving away from the Gulf Coast. While a few showers connected to Harvey may occur through Thursday, little to no noteworthy consequence is expected. Only the Amite River at Maurepas and the Tangipahoa River at Robert will make it into minor flood stage, all other gauged locations will remain below bank full.

Today and Tonight: Alas, the area is transitioning away from weather influenced by Harvey. Thursday will bring partly sunny skies with just a few showers and thunderstorms—not as heavy, and not as widespread as earlier in the week. Winds will be elevated early—out of the southwest at 10-20mph. High temperatures will make it into the middle 80s. Thursday night will be partly cloudy with low temperatures in the lower 70s.

Up Next: Relative to the recent stretch of weather, rather pleasant conditions are expected for the upcoming weekend. Friday through Sunday will feature partly sunny days with only an isolated shower or thunderstorm possible each afternoon. High temperatures will make a run at 90 degrees although humidity may ratchet down slightly. Low temperatures will be in the low 70s. Unsettled weather will return early next week followed by a potential cold front with some nice changes (more on that below).

The Tropics: Harvey is all but a goner. The tropical depression will produce rain and wind in the Mid-Mississippi River Valley to Ohio Valley through Saturday but influence on Gulf Coast weather is quickly diminishing. A weak disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is now being monitored as well. While considerable organization is not expected, as this area moves northward rain may return to the flood stricken western Gulf Coast. It is much too early for any definitive forecast on this system, but is something to watch. Hurricane Irma has rapidly intensified into a category two storm. With a minimum central pressure of 979mb and maximum sustained winds of 100mph, the system was moving west, northwest and 10mph. Irma is forecast to become a category four hurricane with potential to reach category five status. It is still too soon to forecast track beyond the Leeward Islands, but the United States will need to monitor this one very closely into next week.

THE EXPLANATION:

Conditions will continue to improve today as Harvey continues to lift northward, away from the Baton Rouge area. The tropical rain bands will not be as heavy and will drop from the scattered to isolated category with about 40 percent of the 13 Parish 3 County forecast area receiving measurable rain. Winds will decrease as well.  By Friday, an upper level trough left in the wake of Harvey will remain in place across the forecast area, but a much drier air mass will considerably curtail convective development. A weak surface high will build in on Saturday and last through the weekend. As a result, Friday through Sunday will result in typical late summer rain coverage of 20 to 30 percent—limited to the afternoons during peak heating and maximum sea breeze interactions. High temperatures will be close to normal, in the upper 80s and lower 90s. An inverted trough and weak surface low in the Gulf of Mexico will begin to increase rain coverage into next week. The increased instability with a return of tropical moisture will allow scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop mainly inland during the days and mainly coastal during the nights. Looking beyond that, there are a number of interesting scenarios possible according to the forecast models by the end of next week. First and foremost, we may need to keep a close eye on Tropical Storm Irma. There seems to be potential for this storm to become quite strong in the Atlantic Ocean. It is not yet known what will happen from there. Second, a late summer cold front may approach the area during the middle of next week. Forecast models are hinting at temperatures running 5-10 degrees below average for the time of year, which could mean highs in the low to mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s. Humidity would take a break too. This could lead to cooler and drier weather just in time for next weekend.

Hurricane Irma expected to strengthen in Atlantic Ocean this weekend
9/2/17

Powerful Hurricane Irma is expected to strengthen over the eastern Atlantic Ocean during the weekend – potentially becoming as potent as a Category 5 storm as it swirls its way toward the Leeward Islands, where it could make landfall next week.

Irma strengthened to a Category 3 storm on Thursday but had been downgraded to a Category 2 on Saturday. Irma was forecast to be an “extremely dangerous” storm for the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm was moving northwest at nearly 13 mph and no coastal watches or warnings were in effect. Its maximum sustained winds had decreased to 110 mph.

Forecasters said it was too early to determine if it would make landfall or pose a threat to the United States.

"It is much too early to determine what direct impacts Irma will have on the continental United States," the National Hurricane Center said. "Regardless, everyone in hurricane-prone areas should ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place, as we are now near the peak of the season."

Forecasters warned people in the U.S. East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to monitor the storm and its path, according to the Weather Channel.

Should Irma strike the U.S., it could form a devastating 1-2 punch of Category 4 storms after the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Harvey last weekend.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lidia lashed Mexico’s resort-studded southern Baja California peninsula with heavy rains and is responsible for at least four deaths in the country's Los Cabos area. Authorities warned the death toll could rise over the weekend as emergency crews surveyed the damage in villages with ramshackle homes. At least one person was considered missing.

State Tourism Secretary Luis Genero Ruiz said about 20,000 foreign tourists were stranded after airlines suspended flights to the area.

Lidia had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph Saturday with weakening expected over the next few days as the storm reaches the mountainous terrain of Baja California. The storm was centered about 70 miles south-southwest of Santa Rosalia, Mexico, and was heading northwest at about 12 mph.

Hurricane Irma's path toward U.S. still uncertain
Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 Atlanta News

Hurricane Irma regained strength Sunday to a Category 3 storm, with winds at 115 mph and an unpredictable path that might strike the United States next week anywhere between Florida and Nova Scotia.

A sharper image of the hurricane’s track should come into focus by Tuesday, said meteorologist Philip Klotzbach with Colorado State University.

The storm could also turn back out to sea without hitting the U.S. mainland.

“The forecast cone is several hundred miles wide, so we’ll all be watching, waiting and being prepared,” Klotzbach said Sunday. “We don’t want the entire coastline from Florida to Maine to freak out, but pay attention.”

» As Harvey finally fizzles, a look at what made it so nasty

While Texas and Louisiana dry out from Tropical Storm Harvey's devastating rainfall, the nation is on high alert but needs to be patient, Klotzbach said. He suggested residents on the Eastern Seaboard refresh preparedness kits and keep close watch of the forecasts.

"Subtle shifts in the path now can make big changes as to where it goes next," Klotzbach said. "Follow your local emergency managers and start thinking about what you'd do if there's an order to evacuate or shelter-in-place."

Irma is currently tracking toward the Bahamas by Thursday.

The National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Irma will likely be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it moves near the northeastern Leeward Islands by the middle of this week and could cause dangerous winds, storm surge and rainfall.

As the hurricane strengthens over warm water, it could slam into the Caribbean islands as a Category 4 with winds topping 150 mph.

Irma is tracking toward the Bahamas by Thursday.

The National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Irma will likely be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it moves near the northeastern Leeward Islands by the middle of this week and could cause dangerous winds, storm surge and rainfall.

Hurricane watches were issued Sunday for portions of the Leeward Islands and a NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft had been deployed en route to Irma, according to the hurricane center.

As the storm strengthens over warm water, it could slam into the Caribbean islands as a Category 4 with winds topping 150 mph.

The hurricane center said it is too early to determine what direct impact Irma could have on the U.S. coast by next weekend.

Sunday’s advisories said Irma was still 885 miles east of the Leeward Islands moving at about 14 mph.

In the eastern Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Lidia degenerated Sunday with maximum sustained winds dropping to near 35 mph after taking aim at Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

Initially, Lidia brought concerns about possible flooding and mudslides in Baja California Sur and western Jalisco that received almost 20 inches of rain.

Tropical moisture from Lidia will spread across parts of the desert Southwest into Monday and produce scattered showers and thunderstorms in Nevada, western Arizona and Southern California. The weather service warned of life-threatening surf and rip currents produced by the residual storm swells.

South Florida is keeping a wary eye on Hurricane Irma as it continues to gain strength, setting a course for a potential U.S. landfall by next week.

Irma intensified overnight Sunday, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph as of Monday morning at 8 a.m., forecasters said.

The storm is located about 610 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving west-southwest at 14 mph.

HURRICANE GUIDE & TRACKER: Watch Irma's path here and find storm resources

Carribean islands, including Antigua and St. Kitts, are under a hurricane watch, meaning those areas could experience tropical storm-force winds within the next 48 hours.

However, further strengthening is forecast, and the storm is expected to become a Category 4 hurricane "in the next couple of days," 10Weather WTSP meteorologist Grant Gilmore said.

On its current track, Irma could impact Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands as a strong Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of at least 130 mph.

"Irma has a well-defined eye wall that is not going to see any weakening," Gilmore said.

By Saturday at 2 a.m., forecasters say the hurricane could be situated just north of Cuba, with a northwesterly track that could approach south Florida.

"Everybody from Florida and up the East Coast will be watching this track very closely because there could be some impact," Gilmore said.

LOCAL FORECAST: What to expect through Labor Day

The Miami Dolphins are monitoring the storm ahead of Sunday's season opener against the Tampa Bay Bucs at Hard Rock Stadium.

As of now there are no plans to delay or move the game. But if South Florida is threatened by the storm it's worth noting the Dolphins and Buccaneers have the same bye week, Nov. 19.

In a pair of tweets Sunday, Gov. Rick Scott urged Floridians to be prepared:

"As we continue to monitor Hurricane Irma, families should make sure their Disaster Supply Kits are ready today.

"FL knows how important it is to be prepared. Encourage your loved ones to have a plan ahead of any potential storm.''

TAMPA BAY IS DUE: The region is not prepared for a major hurricane

In Vero Beach, residents were stocking up on supplies at a Lowe's Home Improvement Store, the Treasure Coast Newspapers reported.

David Yates, 42, of Vero Beach got two propane canisters, and several store customers wheeled by with shopping carts containing 5-gallon gasoline cans.

"You can't take a chance," said Yates, an automotive technician.

As Irma Threatens, Florida Hits The Panic Button With Massive Run On Food And Water Supplies
On Monday night, shoppers said, Publix in College Park was out of bottled water. A viewer also gave News 6 a picture showing empty water shelves at the Walmart on Alafaya Trail near the University of Central Florida. Micah Kropp stopped by Publix in College Park and bought water by the gallon since that was the only option. He's also stocking up on canned food, crackers and diapers.

9/5/17

Although Hurricane Irma is days away from potential impact, the current projected path shows it possibly hitting Florida as a Category 5 storm.

EDITOR’S NOTE: I live in Northeast Florida in Saint Augustine, 2 hours away from Orlando and about 6 hours away from Miami, but the people here had already started picking the shelves clean. As of 6:00 PM this evening, not a single grocery store or supply market had any water for sale. They promised more supplies were coming, and then refused to say when. The people are in a very clear state of panic, and have begun hording food and especially water. If this is how people react to natural weather phenomenon, how do you think they will get through the Tribulation if they miss the Rapture? Answer. They won’t.

People around Central Florida were already experiencing a shortage of supplies at grocery stores on Monday, but the managers of some big-box stores said they have reinforcements on the way. On Tuesday, shoppers lined up outside several stores, including Costco in Altamonte Springs, for a chance to get supplies, including water, batteries and food.

“It was a little bit of a pandemonium,” shopper Diane Williams said. “Getting here was worse than being inside. It’s just that everybody is panicked, so they are preparing, which is wise, but it’s just, like, crazy.”

THE WATER AISLE AT THE WALMART IN SAINT AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA TAKEN AT 6:00 PM TUESDAY

Patrick Sutton, the assistant manager at the Home Depot in Altamonte Springs, said the store ran out of generators on Monday and water and flashlights by Tuesday afternoon.

“I think everyone is more aware of what’s going on because of what happened with Harvey in Texas,” he said. “I was here in 2004 for Charley and it was not taken so seriously back then. Now, everybody is taking it more seriously, which allows them to get the supplies they need and gives us time to get the supplies soon enough.”

Home Depot Corporate launched its Rapid Response Team, sending trucks from Atlanta to Florida on Tuesday to restock the shelves across the state.

“My trucks are on the road right now and will be coming in the next days. We have a couple of more days before the storm hits, so we have more time,” Sutton said. “By the end of the week, they will have everything they need.”

He’s also stocking up on canned food, crackers and diapers.

“I got a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, so (I’ve) got to think a little differently with them at the helm, and then will be traveling this week for work, so not sure when I will have the time. It will be kind of hectic,” Kropp said.

A spokesperson with Target headquarters said Florida stores will be getting additional supplies and resources ahead of the storm.

“We’re providing stores with additional supplies that we know our guests need to stock up, including water, batteries, flashlights, toiletries, camping supplies, cleaning supplies and nonperishable food,” Target spokeswoman Jenna Reck said. “We’ll continue to push as many products to our stores as we safely can before the hurricane hits.”

News 6 picked up supplies at the Walmart located on the corner of Princeton Street and John Young Parkway. Supplies there were plentiful, with employees steadily restocking the water aisle.
Walmart management told News 6 Walmart has opened its emergency operations center at its headquarters in Arkansas for distribution.

Walmart spokesperson Ragan Dickens said the company is working with store managers to see where the needs are greatest. Dickens also said 800 trucks full of only water are on their way to Florida and other trucks full of hurricane supplies are also en route.

Pictures on social media showed empty water and bread shelves at other stores, including the Walmart on Alafaya Trail near UCF.

Min Cho said he’s preparing for his electricity to go out.

“I ordered a generator on Amazon. Should be coming on Friday. Also, some dry foods and stuff like that,” Cho said. source

JUDGMENT DAY? Massive Solar Flares Erupt As Largest Recorded Hurricane Irma In Atlantic Roars Towards U.S.
Experts say Irma is now so powerful it is registering on devices designed to detect earthquakes. Scientists picked up the background noise of winds causing trees to move and crashing ocean waves on their earthquake-detecting seismometers. It is expected to become the second powerful storm to thrash the U.S. mainland in as many weeks after devastating Hurricane Harvey. A mandatory evacuation is under way in the Florida Keys. In addition to Irma, Tropical Storm Jose has now formed behind it in the open Atlantic and is expected to develop into a hurricane. A third tropical storm - Katia - has also formed in the Gulf of Mexico with winds but is expected to stay offshore until Friday morning.

‘May God save us all’: Mass evacuation as Hurricane Irma makes landfall in the Caribbean with 185 mph winds after swelling to the size of FRANCE as Red Cross braces for ‘major humanitarian response’

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.” Luke 21:25,26 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: We are not in the time of Jacob’s trouble, we know the Church will be removed before that, but at times like these it sure feels like the judgments listed in Revelation are falling down upon us. We watched just last week Hurricane Harvey caused nearly $160 billion dollars worth of damage in Texas with 30 people dead, and just a few days after that Hurricane Irma appeared and immediately gained Cat 5 status. Well today, the sun had massive solar flares not seen in over a decade. with more on the way. Kinda sounds like ‘birth pangs’ to me! Flight #777 on Titus 2:13 Airlines now boarding…are you ready for what comes next?
Sun unleashes most powerful solar flare since 2006

Two powerful solar flares erupted from the surface of the sun on Wednesday, disrupting radio communications on Earth’s day side. And we might see some other effects in the coming days, mainly in the form of northern lights.

Solar flares occur in cooler regions of the sun, called sunspots. Like Earth, the sun has a magnetic field, sort of like a looped rubber band: at one end is the south pole, the other the north. And as the sun rotates, magnetic loops become wrapped, becoming tighter and tighter as they twist. If they become too entangled, the stored energy is released in the form of a solar flare.

These flares are measured on a scale from one to nine in C, M and X classes, with X being the most powerful.

On Wednesday, two solar flares erupted from sunspot region 2673: an X9.3 flare followed by a an X2.2 flare. The last such powerful X-class flare was 9.0 on Dec. 5, 2006. The flares were powerful enough to cause radio disruptions on the day side of Earth but will continue to disrupt HAM radio communications into the night, space meteorologist Tamitha Skov said in a Periscope Live video.

Mass evacuations are underway today after Hurricane Irma slammed into the Caribbean with 185mph winds as aid agencies braced for a ‘major humanitarian response’.

America’s National Hurricane Center said Irma had strengthened into a dangerous Category 5 storm as it made its first landfall in islands of northeast Caribbean on a path that could take it to the United States – causing thousands to start panic buying and preparing to evacuate.

This morning, the eye of the ‘potentially catastrophic’ hurricane – estimated to be the size of France – lashed Barbuda just hours after officials warned people to seek protection from Irma’s ‘onslaught’ in a statement that closed with: ‘May God protect us all.’

Heavy rain and howling winds from the hurricane – measured as the most powerful ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean – also raked Antigua, sending debris flying as people huddled in their homes or government shelters. The French islands Saint-Barthelemy and Saint-Martin have also been hit this morning.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared emergencies in Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and authorities in the Bahamas said they would evacuate the residents of six islands at the southern end of the island chain.

A third tropical storm – Katia – has also formed in the Gulf of Mexico with winds but is expected to stay offshore until Friday morning. source

Hurricane Irma 5 p.m. update: Track shifts west, with Central Florida impact more likely
9/7/17

Hurricane Irma’s track has shifted west, bringing a greater chance of the massive Category 5 storm having a significant impact on Central Florida.

The National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. update that “it has become more likely” that Irma will hit South Florida “as a dangerous major hurricane, and bring life-threatening storm surge and wind impacts to much of the state.”

Models showed the hurricane’s track slicing through the middle of the state, curving east as it moves north.

"The new NHC track lies directly over Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. This track would bring the most damaging winds into our corridor,” Fox 35 meteorologist Brooks Tomlin said

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch and storm surge watch for the Florida Keys and parts of South Florida Thursday as the Category 5 storm rolls toward the state.

The watches — Florida’s first for Hurricane Irma — will likely extend north throughout the evening.

The forecast cone shows Irma reaching South Florida early Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm. Central Florida is expected to begin feeling tropical storm force winds Saturday night, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Water could reach 5 to 10 feet above ground if the storm surge happens at high tide in south Florida. Coastal areas will see the deepest waters, “where the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves,” according to the NHC.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, Maximum sustained winds are 175 mph, and the storm is moving west-northwest at 16 mph. Irma was toward the Turk and Caicos Islands and should be near the southeastern Bahamas later this evening, according to the NHC.

Much of Florida is in the cone of uncertainty, with the eye of the storm hugging the east coast as it heads north. The storm also likely will impact Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, forecasters said.

“This could easily be the most costly storm in U.S. history, which is saying a lot considering what just happened two weeks ago," said Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, alluding to the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Forecasters say Central Florida will see the worst of Irma starting late Sunday and early Monday, but the severity of the storm’s impact depends a lot on whether the track shifts, said Will Ulrich, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

He said Central Florida will likely be under a hurricane watch by Thursday evening. Throughout the entirety of the storm, the Orlando region has a 72 percent chance of at least 39 mph through the storm, a 36 percent chance of at least 58 mph winds and a 15 percent chance of at least 74 mph winds, though Ulrich said those chances continue to increase.

“This is definitely one of the biggest threats we’ve faced in Central Florida in quite some time,” Ulrich said, adding the damage last year from Hurricane Matthew along Florida’s east coast could seem minimal compared to Irma.

The storm’s path shows it could steer east, possibly skirting alongside the state but forecasters said there’s still a chance it could turn west.

“Right now, the tracks still show Central Florida feeling a lot of impact from a major hurricane, so I’m not sleeping comfortable at night,” Ulrich said. “We have to assume this storm is going to hit us because we can’t afford not to be prepared.”

Gov. Rick Scott urged those across the state to prepare because the storm could shift.

“Everyone should prepare to evacuate. We don’t know where this storm is going,” he said. “…It could potentially devastate our state. You have to take it seriously no matter where you are.”

Hurricane-force winds are extending 70 miles from Irma’s center, with tropical storm-force winds reaching out 185 miles.

He said even if the storm stays off the coast of Florida, the storm surge will be “traumatic.” There could be more than 10 feet of storm surge and the water “could cover your house,” Scott said.

Scott said more than 6,800 volunteers have signed up to help during the storm, but 17,000 are needed. To sign up, go to volunteerflorida.org.

Hurricane Irma will "devastate" the United States and knock out power in Florida for several days, an emergency response chief has warned, as the storm continued to tear a trail of devastation through the Caribbean.

The RAF has sent several aid planes to the region after the British territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands was "pummelled" by howling winds of up to 175mph and 20ft waves early on Friday.

Irma is now tracking a path down the coast of Cuba towards the Bahamas, where it is due to reach early on Saturday, before hitting southern Florida on Sunday. The official death toll from the worst ever Atlantic storm is 14, but is expected to rise.

More than 100,000 people might need shelter after the hurricane hits the US, the Federal Emergency Management Agency warned, adding that that Irma is "going to devastate the United States in either Florida or some of the southeastern states".

Meanwhile, extra troops were sent to the devastated holiday island of Saint-Martin on Friday to control serious looting, as three RAF planes began ferrying troops and equipment to hard-hit British territories. UK Marines have also arrived on Anguilla to begin repairing buildings.

As Irma cuts through the Caribbean, two other storms in the region have been upgraded to hurricane status: Katia in the Gulf of Mexico and Jose, which is following Irma in the Atlantic and has some already-battered islands in its expected path. On Friday afternoon, it strengthened to a category four hurricane.

The Red Cross said an estimated 1.2 million people have already been affected by Irma and that figure could rise sharply to 26 million, amid fears disease could spread in areas where drinking water and sanitation services have broken down.

IRMAGEDDON: 1.4 Million Ordered To Evacuate As Irma Upgraded Back To Category 5 Ahead Of Striking Florida
Apocalyptic scenes are playing out across the Sunshine State, as more than a million people flee Hurricane Irma's wrath. Florida Gov. Rick Scott is telling residents in the southern coastal evacuation areas to leave by midnight. In preparation for what is predicted to be the most powerful hurricane to hit the United States in years, an estimated 1.4 million people have been given mandatory evacuation orders in both Florida and Georgia.

9/8/17

Hurricane Irma is once again forecast to hit the Florida Keys as a Category 5 storm, as more than a million people have fled its path and abandoned their homes. Meteorologists expect the powerful hurricane to hit the Sunshine State between 5am and 7am ET on Sunday.

“Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.” Isaiah 29:6 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: Hurricane Irma is a little more than twice the size of the state of Florida, so there is no portion of the state that will remain unmolested by her wrath. Wind gusts are currently being recorded at 190 MPH. Here in Saint Augustine, America’s oldest city, the heavy pre-hurricane rains have already started and our sea level streets are beginning to flood. Irma is still 2 days away. If you live in Saint Johns county in either Zone A or B, you must evacuate now.

‘Obviously Hurricane Irma continues to be a threat that is going to devastate the United States,’ Brock Long, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said at a press conference Friday morning. ‘We’re going to have a couple rough days.’

The storm was first downgraded from a Category 5 to a Category 4 earlier on Friday morning, but as of 5pm ET on Friday, it is predicted to hit the U.S. as a Category 5. This will only be the fourth time ever a Category 5 has hit US mainland.

As of 6.30pm ET Friday, the hurricane is moving west at 12 mph and located 345 miles southeast of Miami.

Government officials along with the National Hurricane Center have cautioned that Irma is ‘extremely dangerous’ with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. That’s strong enough to bring down power poles, uproot trees and rip the roofs off of homes.
Hurricane Irma: Live updates

In preparation for what is predicted to be the most powerful hurricane to hit the United States in years, an estimated 1.4million people have been given mandatory evacuation orders in both Florida and Georgia.

Apocalyptic scenes are playing out across the Sunshine State, as more than a million people flee Hurricane Irma’s wrath. Florida Gov. Rick Scott is telling residents in the southern coastal evacuation areas to leave by midnight.

‘If you are planning to leave and do not leave tonight, you will have to ride out this extremely dangerous storm at your own risk,’ Scott said at a Friday press conference.

He also urged residents on the Gulf Coast to take evacuation orders seriously since Irma’s path has moved slightly west.

‘You are not going to survive this if it happens,’ Scott said. ‘Now is the time to evacuate.’
The forecasts show that dangerous storm surges could begin as early as Saturday night before the storm even hits Florida.

It’s then expected to track directly up the state, crossing the state line into Georgia early next week.

Hurricane Irma killed at least 24 people in the Caribbean and left thousands homeless as it devastated small islands in its path.  And it’s already proved deadly in the U.S. A man installing hurricane shutters on his Florida home fell off a ladder and died on Thursday.

The National Hurricane Center issued hurricane warnings for the Keys and parts of South Florida and Lake Okeechobee. It added a storm surge warning and extended watch areas wrapping around much of the peninsula.

For Irma, forecasters predicted a storm surge of 6 to 12 feet above ground level along Florida’s southwest coast and in the Keys. As much as a foot of rain could fall across the state, with isolated spots receiving 20 inches.

Scott has been pleading with his citizens all week to evacuate if they are ordered to, and to prepare – no matter the direction of the storm. source

As Hurricane Irma lashed Florida with heavy winds and rain, TV station Miami News 10 WPLG captured groups of looters breaking into stores.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The police in Florida have a short and concise message for looters caught looting during Hurricane Irma. You will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. So the question you have to ask yourself is “is stealing some cash, a television or a pair of sneakers really worth the jail time?” In case you are thinking impaired, the answer to that question is “no”.

Footage from WPLG Local 10 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, shows multiple people breaking through the front window Simon’s Sportswear, entering the store and walking out with various items.

According to WPLG Local 10, the looters had also broken into other stores in the nearby area, including Footlocker and CashAmerica Pawn Store.

The group of about 8-9 people broke through the front window and were seen walking in and then walking out with stolen items.

The group then began looting a Footlocker and CashAmerica Pawn Store in the same area. Hours later, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department tweeted that they had caught the criminals.

“Going to prison over a pair of sneakers is a fairly bad life choice,” said Fort Lauderdale police chief Rick Maglione. “Stay home and look after your loved once and be thankful they are all safe.”

The Broward Sheriff’s Office immediately reacted to Local 10’s report, tweeting “ATTENTION LOOTERS; Every incident will be investigated. Evidence collected will be used to pursue charges after the fact.”

Meanwhile, the Pembroke Pines Police Department issued a stern warning, tweeting “Any looters who come to Pembroke Pines will be greeted by our officers. Choose wisely and stay home.”

South Florida law enforcement officials promised to police the streets to prevent looting, but with unsafe winds currently pummeling the region, it’s not known if units are currently on patrol. source

Just In: Florida sets a date!

Please share and comment.

After the devastation of Hurricane Irma, Key West will reopen on October 1st.

cbsnews.com reports: Florida Keys officials say the island chain that was hit hard by Hurricane Irma will reopen to tourists on October 1.

Officials made the announcement Monday, more than two weeks after the Category 4 storm made landfall in the Florida Keys. The storm destroyed an estimated 25 percent of homes on the islands.

Florida Keys officials had asked visitors to postpone their trips after the storm damaged power and water supplies. Florida Keys spokesman Andy Newman said power and water service is now restored to customers who can receive them and a boil water notice has been lifted.

Hospitals have reopened in the Upper Keys and Key West, officials said Monday.

Death toll from Florida nursing home where Irma knocked out power rises to 14

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Police say two women who were taken from an overheated Florida nursing home that lost its air conditioning during Hurricane Irma have died, becoming the 13th and 14th fatalities linked to the home.

Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman told The Associated Press on Monday that Cecilia Franco, 90, and Francesca Andrade, 95, died from ailments suffered when the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills lost power Sept. 10 during the hurricane's passage.

On Sept. 13, eight residents died and other residents were evacuated from the sweltering facility after the electric transformer that powered the facility's air conditioning was damaged during the storm. Grossman didn't say exactly when the women died, but said police are treating the deaths as part of the criminal investigation.

The Miami Herald reports Franco's husband, Miguel Antonio Franco, who also had lived at the home, died Sept. 13.
