Etna erupts overnight REUTERS/Antonio Parrinello Mount Etna spews lava on the southern Italian island of Sicily January 13, 2011. Lauren Strapagiel January 13, 2011 – 11:26 am Lava lit the Sicilian sky as Mt. Etna erupted overnight Wednesday. The two-hour eruption sent lava flying into the air and down the Italian volcano’s eastern slope. Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, started rumbling Tuesday and appears to be calming down as of Thursday morning. Fontanarossa airport in nearby Catania was shut down overnight but reopened around 6:30 A.M. local time. The eruption did not pose a threat to the surrounding population and scientists are monitoring the activity. Youtube user deutschlandquer captured the eruption from his hotel in Taormina.
