Title: Should a Christian keep the Sabbath?
Post by: Christian40 on January 19, 2011, 11:35:04 pm
Should a Christian keep the Sabbath?

The New Testament teaches that we today are under no part of the Old Testament (Romans 7:1-7; 2 Corinthians 3:1-18; Galatians 3:24,25; Ephesians 2:13-16; Colossians 2:14; Hebrews 7:12; 8:7).
The Bible also clearly teaches that the "Law of God" and the "Law of Moses" refer to the same law (Nehemiah 8:1, 18; Ezra 7:6, 12; Luke 2:22,23). When Jesus did away with the Law of Moses, He did away with the Old Testament Law of God for the two are the same.  The Bible also clearly teaches that Christians are to worship on Sunday, the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:1,2; Revelation 1:10).
Following are seven reasons people today are not bound to keep the sabbath (Saturday):

(1) In 2 Corinthians 3, a comparison of terms is used  to contrast "that which is abolished" (verse 13) and  "done away" (verses 7,11,14) with that which "remaineth" (verse 11).
Old - New
Abolished - Remains
Written with ink - Written by the Spirit
Written on stone - Written on the heart
The Old Covenant - The New Covenant
The letter kills - The Spirit gives life
The ministry of death - Ministry of the Spirit
Ministry of condemnation - Ministry of righteousness
Bondage - Liberty
The vail - The mirror
Moses - The Lord
Glorious - More Glorious
The ten commandments are included in the list of those things which were abolished, done away with!

(2) The letter to the Galatians was written to warn of false teachers who were trying to take away the freedom which Christians have in Jesus Christ. They wanted to bring them into slavery to the Law of Moses (Galatians 2:4; 5:1). The Law of Moses was given 450 years after God’s promise to Abraham (Galatians 3:17). The Law  of  Moses, which included the ten commandments, was given until the "seed" (Christ) should come (Galatians 3:19). The Law of Moses was a "schoolmaster" to bring us to faith in Christ (Galatians 3:24,25). But after faith has come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster (The Law of Moses).

(3) In Romans 7, the apostle Paul says that Christians are "dead to the law" (Romans 7:4). He also says that we have been "delivered from the law" (verse 6). The law we are dead to said "Thou shalt not covet" (verse 7). Since this is one of the ten commandments, this means the law we are dead to and discharged from is the law which contained the ten commandments. The tenth commandment is: "Thou shalt not covet" (Exodus 20:17).

(4) Jeremiah 31:31-34 is a prophecy regarding the Law which included the ten commandments: "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt...." In Hebrews 8:8-13, we see the fulfillment of Jeremiah’s prophecy. The covenant that God made with Israel and Judah when He led them out of Egypt was the Law given at Mt. Sinai (Exodus 20). It included the ten commandments. The writer of Hebrews says: "For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second." (8:7). Please note also that the sabbath was made known at Sinai, not at the creation as the Adventists argue (Nehemiah 9:13,14).

(5) Paul wrote this to the Christians in Colossae "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances (a direct reference to the ten commandments) that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross" (Colossians 2:14).

(6) After Paul had told the Christians in Colossae that the “handwriting of ordinances” was nailed to the cross, he instructed them: "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." (Colossians 2:16,17). These passages clearly teach that the sabbath is not binding today, nor has it ever been binding on Christians. It was only for the people of Israel before Christ died on the cross.

(7) It is wrong to go to the Old Testament to support a doctrine when we clearly live under the New Testament today. In fact, Paul said about those who seek to be justified by the Old Law: "Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace." (Galatians 5:4).
So lets live under grace from the Lord Jesus Christ.

I disagree with statement number 7

Should a Christian keep the Sabbath?

(7) It is wrong to go to the Old Testament to support a doctrine when we clearly live under the New Testament today. In fact, Paul said about those who seek to be justified by the Old Law: "Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace." (Galatians 5:4).
So lets live under grace from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul went to the old testament to support the Doctrine of Salvation by grace and to show the promise of Abraham to the Gentiles in Galatians 4

Galatians 4:22-31 KJV
22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.23  But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
24  Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25  For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26  But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27  For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
28  Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29  But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30  Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31  So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

There are two OT references here. One from Genesis and one from Isaiah used to support Pauls teaching of a doctrine that we hold to today.

I don't understand fully what you are trying to say here. Grace came about in fullness in the person of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The Jews didn't understand grace fully in the law, in the Old Testament. eg "an eye for a eye" and a "tooth for a tooth". Do you think that Abraham, his wives and his children were Jews or Gentiles?

Woman forced to work Sundays loses case

Christianity was dealt a further blow yesterday when a devout care worker was told she had no legal right to take Sundays off.

Celestina Mba, 57, lost her claim for constructive dismissal after a judge ruled her employer could make her work on the Sabbath.

The Baptist mother-of-three claims she was forced from her job caring for disabled children after clashing with bosses over the issue.

But the tribunal ruled that keeping Sunday as a day of rest was not a ‘core component’ of Christianity.

Miss Mba had claimed that a Muslim colleague had been treated more favourably by being given time off for Friday prayers. This was denied by her employers.

Speaking after the hearing, Miss Mba said: ‘I am amazed by this decision. I thought this was a Christian country and known for its welcome and hospitality to all people. I worked hard for years at my job, and to lose it because of intolerance towards my faith is shocking to me.

‘For me, Christianity requires Sundays off. The Bible asks us to remember the Sabbath day and to keep it holy. It’s about much more than going to Church. I spend the whole day helping others in the community – some of whom have no one to be there for them.’

Miss Mba is part of her church’s ministerial team and spends her Sundays providing pastoral support for the congregation, often visiting local hospitals.

The tribunal ruled against her after reading a statement submitted to support her case by a senior clergyman, which stated only some Christians observe the Sabbath.

^^

Well, whatever happened to the 1st Ammendment? Oh wait a minute, most of our founding fathers weren't Christians to being with...

Anyhow, from what I understand, our founding fathers agenda was to usher in a OWG - of course, it didn't happen in their time, but the Constitution they helped form planted the seeds, if anything.(no, I'm not saying I'm anti-Constitutional here)

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.

That scripture is found somewhere in the bible.  I think it means that it's good for christians to rest on the seventh day, just as our Lord did.  But, if we can't, no harm done, because of the above scripture.

26   How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
27   And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28   Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Mark 2:26-28 (KJB)

Christians 'have no right to refuse to Sunday work'
Judges accused of diluting rights of believers

TELEGRAPH) — Judges have been accused of diluting the rights of Christians after a key judgment on whether they can refuse to work on Sundays.

A new ruling by a High Court judge – the first on the issue in nearly a decade – says that Christians have no right to decline working on Sunday as it is not a “core component” of their beliefs.

The judgment – which upholds an earlier decision – means that individual Christians do not have any protection from being fired for not working on Sundays.

I think he was sort of saying "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
This would include the Old Testament text which was the Bible of Paul`s day and this is his exhortation to use it, quote from it and learn from it.
