This year, which marks the centenary of the publication of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity, has been named theInternational Year of Light(link is external) and light-based technologies by the UN General Assembly. CERN is taking this opportunity to communicate about the High Luminosity LHC project and CERN’s involvement in the SESAME synchrotron laboratory in Jordan. Light is also the main theme of CERN’s participation in the 2015 Researchers’ Night.  

At CERN, “light” can mean “luminosity” - a measurement of the number of collisions in an experiment. The higher the luminosity, the greater the number of collisions. CERN’s High Luminosity LHC(HL-LHC) project aims to extend the discovery potential of CERN’s flagship accelerator, the LHC, by increasing its luminosity by a factor of 10. Under the framework of the EU HiLumi LHC Design Study, the European Union and 15 institutions worldwide are supporting the initial design phase of the HL-LHC machine.

Another important link with the International Year of Light is CESSAMag, also a European Commission-supported project, through which CERN is overseeing the construction of the main ring for the SESAME(link is external) (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) laboratory. SESAME is the Middle East's first major international research centre and is under construction in Allan, Jordan, thanks to contributions from its nine members and other institutions worldwide.

It is even possible that gravity from our own universe may ‘leak’ into this parallel universe, scientists at the LHC say.

The experiment is sure to inflame alarmist critics of the LHC, many of whom initially warned the high energy particle collider would spell the end of our universe with the creation a black hole of its own.

But so far Geneva remains intact and comfortably outside the event horizon.

Indeed the LHC has been spectacularly successful. First scientists proved the existence of the elusive Higgs boson ‘God particle’ – a key building block of the universe – and it is seemingly well on the way to nailing ‘dark matter’ – a previously undetectable theoretical possibility that is now thought to make up the majority of matter in the universe.

But next week’s experiment is considered to be a game changer.

“We predict that gravity can leak into extra dimensions, and if it does, then miniature black holes can be produced at the LHC.

“Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

“This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science.

“This is not what we mean by parallel universes. What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions.

So far, the LHC has searched for mini black holes at energy levels below 5.3 TeV.

But the latest study says this is too low.

Instead, the model predicts that black holes may form at energy levels of at least 9.5 TeV in six dimensions and 11.9 TeV in 10 dimensions. – Express.

Large Hadron Collider restarts after two-year rebuild

The Large Hadron Collider has restarted, with protons circling the machine's 27km tunnel for the first time since 2013.

Particle beams have now travelled in both directions, inside parallel pipes, at a whisker below the speed of light.

Actual collisions will not begin for at least another month, but they will take place with nearly double the energy the LHC reached during its first run.

Scientists hope to glimpse a "new physics" beyond the Standard Model.

Rolf Heuer, the director-general of Cern, which operates the LHC, told engineers and scientists at the lab: "Congratulations. Thank you very much everyone… now the hard work starts".

Cern's director for accelerators and technology, Frédérick Bordry, said: "After two years of effort, the LHC is in great shape.

"But the most important step is still to come when we increase the energy of the beams to new record levels."

The beams have arrived a week or so later than originally scheduled, due to a now-resolved electrical fault.

The protons are injected at a relatively low energy to begin with. But over the coming months, engineers hope to gradually increase the beams' energy to 13 trillion electronvolts: double what it was during the LHC's first operating run.

After 08:30 GMT, engineers began threading the proton beam through each section of the enormous circle, one-by-one, before completing multiple full turns. It was later joined by the second beam, in parallel.

The experiment teams have already detected "splashes" of particles, which occur when stray protons hit one of the shutters used to keep the beam on-track. If this happens in part of the pipe near one of the experiments, the detectors can pick up some of the debris.

Large Hadron Collider discovers 'mega particle that could hold key to other dimensions'

SCIENTISTS believe they have discovered a new "game changing" particle through the bizarre experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LCH).

One theory is that the particle could be a bigger, heavier version of the Higgs boson, and if proven could change our understanding about physics and the Universe.

If true this particle would be four times bigger than the largest quarks - the heaviest known particles - and six times bigger than the Higgs boson which was first mooted as a theoretical possibility in the 1960s.

A second is that it is that the spikes could be the detection of a theoretical particle called the Gravition which helps mediate gravitational force - and some scientists ot believe would allow for separate dimensions within the universe.

The LCH is a huge network of complex underground tunnels on the French Swiss border where the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), which runs it, gets physicists to literally collide atoms together at high speed to try to discover the smallest possible version and hopefully answer how everything in the universe began.

It is also looking at creating tiny black holes in a bid to discover the truth about alternative dimensions.

The latest discovery came after CERN scientists found unexpected spikes in photon particles among the data of two of the LHC detectors.

Two separate experiments, the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) and ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS), detected the stark rise in energy.

Spikes, believed to have been caused by mega high-energy proton collisions, reportedly hit peaks of 750 giga-electronvolts (GeV)

The discovery could lead to changes in the "Standard Model" of how everything in the universe interacts.

Adam Falkowski, a French physicist, began the speculation after tweeting about the significance of the spikes.

He wrote: "'Most likely, this particle would just be a small part of the larger structure, possibly having something to do with electroweak symmetry breaking and the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model.

"If the signal is a real thing, then it may be the beginning of a new golden era in particle physics."

Kyle Cranmer from New York University said: "It would be huge if true.

"I don't think there is anyone around who thinks this is conclusive."

Gian Francesco Giudice, a Cern theorist said: "If it turns out that the data does indeed represent a new particle it would be a total game changer.

"The Higgs boson pales in comparison, in terms of novelty."

Not all researchers are convinced its an historic moment just yet - and the findings should be more conclusive in 2016.

Dave Charlton, a spokesperson for Cern's Atlas experiment, said: "It's a little intriguing.

"But it can happen by coincidence.

"It could just be a statistical bump, which occurs all the time.

"We expect about ten times as much data next year, which should help resolve this question – but quite likely throw up new ones."

iziano Camporesi, a Cern physicist on the CMS team, said: "If there is an actual natural phenomenon behind these fluctuations, we will know."
