Mental Illness: Advising of "Comfort Care"

Hey guys I'm not quite sure how to get right into this but Ill try to keep it in a nutshell:  my 58 yr. old brother has been mentally ill his whole life with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar. He has a list of misdemeanors and felonies because of his disorder and as a result of poor insight, has always been homeless the last 40 years of his life. He has every year gone through the revolving door of the State Mental Hospital only to be released again to be off his stabilizing medication to go through the same vicious cycle getting into problems of trespassing to find a place to sleep or take a bath.
A couple of months ago, went to a hospital (admitted by a police officer after he collapsed on the street.) Through their extrnsive database, the hospital located me to ask if " as a family member if I wanted them to try to save him with surgery."
 Of course I said yes, because I believe God wants us to live. After his surgery, (within two weeks of his surgery) the social worker and the hospital director of nurses were trying to get me and my sister to agree to what is called "Comfort Care". After hemming and hawing - in very coded words, they stated that his condition and his "quality of life" was not going to be worth him living that we should remove him off of his breathing machine and let him go to a hospice and be given pain medication until he passed. This was the most sickening thing I've ever seen. We refused and my brother is alive today. He is in a nursing home getting shelter food and care that he has not really ever had before.

 I definitely saw the whole process how for almost over a month these people tried to coerce and guilt my sister and I --  then ultimately giving up, and saying that we are just not ready to let him go and they released him and shipped him off to a Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation facility. And that is where he healed the rest of the way from his surgery of his stomach.
I don't know what his future holds but it is in God's hands and the bottom line is this:
They definitely wanted to see him dead instead of having one more homeless person on the streets. Everyday I can't imagine how many family members are coerced to do this where they think they have the ability to decide whether or not someone would want to live their life disabled or in any other condition.

Thank you for sharing this with us - yeah, unfortunately, today's society has embraced the culture of death. Murder is murder, period. There are NO gray areas around it!
