The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. Guatemala earthquake: 6.8 magnitude shock strikes off Pacific coast

    Thursday 22 June 2017 15:10 BST

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has hit Guatemala's Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey has reported.

There are no immediate reports of what damage has occurred but there are reports of tremors in neighbouring El Salvador and Mexico.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 24 miles (38 km) southwest of Puerto San Jose, approximately 6.2 miles (10 km) below the earth's surface.

This is the second such earthquake to hit the Central American country in the last week. That earthquake hit the interior of the country, killing two people.

Magnitude-5.8 earthquake strikes in western Montana: USGS

By Brendan O'Brien

A magnitude-5.8 earthquake hit western Montana early on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, and people felt the tremor hundreds of miles away.

The earthquake struck five miles (9 km) southeast of Lincoln, Montana, at about 12:30 a.m. local time, the USGS said on its website.

"New experience: woken up by an earthquake. No damage just spooky as heck!" Cole Fawcett tweeted in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, about 285 miles (460 km) north of Lincoln.

Residents in the U.S. west flooded Twitter early on Thursday with similar experiences.

"My mom woke up and yelled at me and my dad that there was a bear shaking our trailer," Brad Wynder said on Twitter.

No significant damage or injuries had been reported about an hour after the quake.

More than 10,000 reports from those who felt shaking were collected on the USGS website.

Several aftershocks with magnitudes of more than 4 were reported by the USGS. The Pacific Tsunami Warning center earlier reported the quake with a magnitude of 6.0.

Magnitude 4.2 quake strikes near Cushing, Oklahoma, oil storage hub
7/14/17

HOUSTON (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2 on Friday struck Stroud, Oklahoma, about 20 miles (32.2 km) from the key oil storage hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) said.

There were no reports of damage from the quake, Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC) spokesman Matt Skinner said by phone. The OCC and OGS were investigating Friday's seismic activity, the OCC said in a statement.

A series of aftershocks shook the area in the hours following the earthquake, which occurred at 8:47 a.m. CDT (1347 GMT), including two quakes measuring at preliminary magnitudes of 3.5 and 3.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Early data from the USGS showed six seismic events in the area on Friday morning, the OCC said.

Oil companies operating the tanks and pipelines around the Cushing hub have reported no damage to their facilities. Phillips 66, Enterprise Products Partners, TransCanada Corp, Tallgrass Energy Partners LP, Enbridge Inc and Magellan Midstream Partners LP in separate statements said operations were not impacted by the quake.

Magnitude 7.4 quake between Russia and Alaska to cause tsunami waves: US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Monday evening that a magnitude 7.4 earthquake had occurred off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

"Based on preliminary earthquake parameters... hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter," the center wrote in an official message.

On Twitter, the center confirmed that it was not expecting tsunami conditions to impact North American coasts.

7 earthquakes struck Oklahoma in 28 hours for a disturbing reason

8/3/17

In less than 28 hours, Oklahoma has been pummeled by earthquakes.

The wave started on Tuesday night, when five quakes struck the central part of the state, and extended into the early hours of Thursday as two more hit, according to the United States Geological Survey.

All of the earthquakes were between magnitude two and five and no significant damage was reported. However, the shaking is part of a troubling recent phenomenon. The disposal of wastewater from hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking), appears to have spiked the likelihood of earthquakes in Oklahoma, potentially raising the state to the same earthquake threat level as California, according to a recent USGS forecast.

Until recently, earthquakes in Oklahoma were few and far between. In 2010, the state experienced just 41 tremors. By comparison, each year the southern California area alone has about 10,000 earthquakes.

But "seismic activity has surged in [Oklahoma] in recent years," reporter Joe Wertz of StateImpact Oklahoma told NPR on Thursday. In the last few years, Oklahoma has weathered hundreds of significant quakes each year, along with parts of several other Midwestern states.

"Scientists link the quake boom to the widespread oil industry practice of pumping waste fluid into underground disposal wells," Wertz told NPR.

The rise in earthquakes, in other words, can be attributed to the injection of large quantities of wastewater into wells deep below the Earth's surface. According to USGS, the majority of the underground wastewater comes from oil and gas operations — it is created when clean water mixes with dirt, metals, and other toxins below the Earth's surface during extraction operations.

The contaminated water becomes too dangerous to dump anywhere, since it could seep into regular groundwater, so companies shoot the wastewater deep into the earth, between layers of hard rock. That buried water can fracture and move previously stable rock, causing earthquakes under certain circumstances.

Much (but not all) of that wastewater injection is associated with the fracking boom, which has led the practice to become more common in recent years, especially in Oklahoma. Although the state isn't the only one experiencing a spike in wastewater injections, Oklahoma is full of eons-old fault lines that went quiet long ago. Wastewater operations seem to be shaking some of those faults loose, making the land especially vulnerable to earthquakes.

The 2017 USGS predictions for Oklahoma are actually less intense than they were in 2016, because earthquakes were somewhat less frequent there than expected last year. USGS scientists suggest that might be due to stricter regulations that have been put in place to control wastewater injection.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt previously served as Oklahoma's attorney general, and has come under fire from some in the state for failing to take action against wastewater injection and fracking.

Sichuan earthquake: Magnitude 6.5 tremor strikes central China
8/8/17

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck in a mountainous region of central China, the US Geological Survey reports.

The quake struck in a sparsely populated area 200km (120 miles) west-northwest of the city of Guangyuan at a depth of 10km (6 miles), the USGS said. It had earlier put the quake at magnitude 6.6 and 32 km deep.

Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage than deeper ones.

Five people have been killed and more than 60 injured, 30 of them seriously, the Sichuan government said.

Damage to buildings have been reported in a tourist resort and the official People's Daily said the dead were all tourists.

8.0 earthquake strikes off Mexico coast; tsunami is possible in Mexico, Central America
9/8/17
http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/nation-world/world/article171955962.html

MEXICO CITY–A magnitude 8.0 earthquake has occurred off the southern Mexican coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible within the next three hours on some coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador.

The earthquake ruptured at 9:49 p.m. Pacific time Thursday and was felt in the Chiapas area, Guatemala and El Salvador. "There may be some damage closer to the epicenter, but it's pretty far away from the mainland," said USGS geophysicist Jessica Turner.

A tsunami is not expected for California. Widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible within the next three hours on some coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador.

Earthquake warning sirens sounded shortly before midnight across Mexico City. Moments later, buildings began swaying. In La Condesa, a neighborhood in the central part of the city, residents fled homes and took cover in the streets, many barefoot and dressed pajamas. The sky lit up as electrical transformers exploded. There were reports of electric outages in some parts of the city.

A major earthquake shakes Mexico City

MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway sickeningly on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.

The extent of damage or injuries was not immediately clear, but people fled office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue.

The U.S. Geological Survey said quake was magnitude 7.1, and the epicenter was near the town of Raboso, about 76 miles southeast of Mexico City.

Mexico’s seismological agency calculated its preliminary magnitude at 6.8 and said its center was east of the city in the state of Puebla.

Pictures fell from walls and objects were shaken off of flat surfaces. Some people dove for cover under desks.

Earlier in the day buildings across the city held preparation drills on the anniversary of the 1985 quake.

Tsunami warning for much Alaska coast follows earthquake; much of California coast on alert --live updates

Last Updated Jan 23, 2018 5:16 AM EST

A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas of Alaska and British Columbia from the border of Washington State to Attu, Alaska, the Anchorage Office of Emergency Management says.

The warning was issued after an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.2 hit 175 miles southeast of Kodiak City, Alaska.

"If you are located in this coastal area, move inland to higher ground," the office said. "Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest."

In addition, the National Weather Service put much of the U.S. West Coast on alert:

Hawaii was also put under a tsunami watch.

Volcanic unrest around the world: eruptions at Fernandina island (Galapagos), Sakurajima (Japan), Klyuchevskoy (Russia) and Kilauea (USA)

There are currently many volcanoes erupting around the world. Here the latest updates.
Eruption of Fernandina Island’s volcano in the Galapagos archipelago on June 16, 2018

On June 16, nine earthquakes hit off Fernandina Island in the Galapagos archipelago, starting at 8:37 am. The largest quake of this seismic swarm, a M4.1, occurred at 9:22 am.

The seismic unrest resulted in the eruption of island’s volcano between 11h and 11h15, as confirmed by a boat passing by. The eruption is located on the NNE side of the volcano and is currently characterized by lava flows, and 2-3 km high gas plumes.

Lava flowing in the sea generates a powerful plume of steam and gas.

Eruption of Sakurajima volcano in Japan on June 16, 2018

The Sakurajima Minamidake Crater erupted strongly on Kyushu Island, Japan on June 16 at 7:19 am local time. It was accompanied by an ash plume rising to 4,700 meters above the crater, before drifting to the west.

Pyroclastic flows have been observed down the southwest flank and significant ash falls are reported on Kagoshima.

The alert level is maintained at 3 / do not approach the volcano, in force since February 5, 2016.

Klyuchevskoy volcano erupted on June 15 at 21:38 UTC ejecting a plume of ash more than 6,000 meters asl., which then drifted southwest of the volcano.

Moderate activity continues, justifying an orange aviation code, the risk of ash explosions always occurring.

Kilauea volcanic eruption continues

At Kilauea, the eruption continues in the East Rift Zone, where lava fountains rise between 55 and 60 meters on crack 8, surrounded by a 51-meter spatter and tephra cone at its highest point. Fissures 16 and 18 continue to seep out of the lava. Fisures 9 and 24 appear hotter, and degass strongly.

Defense Ministry Announces Emergency Earthquake Convention

In light of recent recurring tremors in Israel’s northern region, the Defense Ministry is to hold a special emergency convention on Wednesday, aimed at determining the readiness of Israel’s emergency services in the event of a large-scale natural disaster.

On Sunday, the tenth tremor in just under a week shook the area around the Sea of Galilee, raising fears that a large-scale earthquake may be looming around the corner. Israel is located on a rift between two tectonic plates, making the country prone to earthquakes, and a large-scale earthquake typically hits the region once a century. In 1927, a 6.2 magnitude quake epicentered in the Dead Sea caused serious damage and destruction in Jerusalem, Nablus, Jericho and Tiberius. In 1837, a devastating 7 magnitude earthquake shook the Galilee, destroying Tzfat and causing major damage in Tiberias.

In 2004, State Comptroller Eliezer Goldberg said the state’s lack of earthquake preparedness left the country in serious danger of extensive damage and loss of life in the event of a significant earthquake. In an report to the Knesset, Goldberg predicted that in the event of an earthquake with a magnitude greater than 6.0, no fewer than 16,000 Israelis would be killed, 90,000 more injured, and 377,000 being displaced.

This past week’s tremors served as a reminder to Israeli authorities that such a disaster may very well be approaching.

Chairman of the Subcommittee for Home Front Security MK Amir Peretz announced that he will also be convening a special meeting on the subject on Thursday. “Earthquakes are fate’s decree, but one that the home front can prepare for, and that is the government’s responsibility,” said Peretz, adding that “we must prepare a national emergency plan. which needs to be implemented by the state before a lethal earthquake hits us.”

“We can’t predict exactly when the next big earthquake will be,” Dr. Ran Novitsky Nof of the Seismological Division of the Geophysical Institute of Israel told TPS, “Sometimes small earthquakes, presage a bigger one, and sometimes they just release seismic energy (but don’t necessarily indicate a coming bigger one),” he added.

Watch Out California! 53 Major Earthquakes (Including A Magnitude 8.2) Just Hit The Ring Of Fire In A 24 Hour Period

Is something unusual starting to happen to the crust of our planet?  The USGS defines any earthquake of at least magnitude 4.5 as “significant”, and there were 53 earthquakes that met that criteria along the Ring of Fire on Sunday alone.  If you would like to verify that information for yourself, you can so do right here.  Not too long ago, I wrote about how “Earth changes” seem to be accelerating all over the world, but even I was stunned by the ferocity of the seismic activity that we witnessed over the weekend.  Because none of the earthquakes happened in the United States, the mainstream media almost entirely ignored this story, but that is a huge mistake.  The entire west coast of the U.S. falls along the “Ring of Fire”, and experts assure us that it is only a matter of time before the seismic tension that is building up along the tectonic plates in that area is released.

Much of the seismic activity on Sunday was near the small island nation of Fiji, and it is true that Fiji often experiences earthquakes because it sits directly inside the Ring of Fire…

Fiji falls in the Pacific Ring Of Fire – a massive horseshoe-shaped area in the Pacific basin.

The ring is formed of a string of 452 volcanoes and sites of seismic activity (earthquakes), which encircle the Pacific Ocean.

Roughly 90 percent of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, and 75 percent of the world’s active volcanoes are dotted along the expansive ring.

It certainly is not unusual to see earthquakes happen along the Ring of Fire, but what was unusual about the activity on Sunday was the size of the earthquakes.

The largest quake on Sunday was a massive magnitude 8.2 earthquake that could have done an enormous amount of damage if it had been closer to the surface…

A massive quake of magnitude 8.2 struck in the Pacific Ocean close to Fiji and Tonga on Sunday but it was so deep that it did not cause any damage, authorities in Fiji said.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center also said the quake was too deep to cause a tsunami.

Earthquakes that are that deep are usually not so large.  This “deep focus” earthquake on Sunday was actually the second largest “deep focus” earthquake that has ever been recorded…

The USGS calls these “deep focus” earthquakes, and while some of the biggest earthquakes to strike the earth are deep focus, their depth usually minimises damage.

The biggest deep focus earthquake ever recorded was in 2013 when an M8.3 struck near Russia and was felt all over Asia, giving us a sense of how massive this Fiji quake was.

In addition to this massive earthquake in Fiji, other areas of the south Pacific were also hammered on Sunday as well.

You may remember that the Indonesian island of Lombok was shaken by a tremendous quake back on August 5th which killed hundreds of people, and on Sunday they were hit once again.  The following comes from CNN…

A trio of intense earthquakes shook several islands in the South Pacific and Indonesia on Sunday, including two on the already battered island of Lombok.

The most recent major quake was a 6.9 magnitude tremor centered just 4 kilometers south of Belanting, on the Indonesian island of Lombok.

That island is still trying to recover from the devastating effects of an August 5 earthquake that killed more than 430 people.

But until big earthquakes start happening here, many Americans simply will not pay any attention to all of this.  What they need to understand is that this is truly a global phenomenon that we are witnessing, and shaking in one part of the globe can have tremendous implications for people literally living on the other side of the planet.  In particular, those living along the west coast should be deeply alarmed that seismic activity along other areas of the Ring of Fire appears to be intensifying.

And I am definitely not the only one saying this.  According to one British news source, scientists are warning that “increased seismic activity” along the Ring of Fire “may mean the so-called ‘Big One’ killer earthquake is on the way”…

Scientists warn increased seismic activity in the area may mean the so-called “Big One” killer earthquake is on the way.

If California was hit, experts warn tens of thousands could be killed.

Sadly, the truth is that we would be extremely fortunate to only have “tens of thousands” killed in the event of a historic earthquake on the west coast.

The 1906 and 1989 earthquakes were actually not that big compared to some of the monster quakes that we have seen elsewhere along the Ring of Fire, but they still did tremendous amounts of damage…

Two major earthquakes have hit the Bay Area in modern history. In 1906, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit San Francisco and 80 percent of the city’s buildings fell or burnt to the ground, leaving 300,000 people homeless and killing nearly 3,000. In 1989, a 6.9 magnitude quake caused the ground to liquefy in parts of the city and collapsed highways, killing more than 60 people.

A new report from the U.S. Geological Survey says that there is more than a 70 percent chance that a 6.7 magnitude or higher earthquake will hit the area in the next 30 years.

We live at a time when our planet is becoming increasingly unstable.  In recent weeks we have witnessed earthquake swarms off of the Oregon coast, record-setting heatwaves, hail the size of softballs, and wildfires of unprecedented size and scope.

There are some experts out there that would like to assure all of us that what we are witnessing is completely normal.

But I think that not a lot of people are buying that explanation.

Because there has not been a major seismic event on the west coast for decades, many people have grown complacent.  They simply assume that because nothing has happened in such a long time that nothing will happen for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, the experts assure us that the “Big One” is definitely coming to the west coast at some point, and all of this seismic activity may be an indication that it is coming sooner rather than later.
