This has got to be a joke, right?

COMMENTARY | As Joplin, Mo., recovers from a devastating blow from an EF5 tornado, residents are beginning to pick up the pieces. Search and rescue efforts are gradually turning to recovery as emergency vehicles are leaving town and volunteers are finishing their work.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m., the same day President Obama is scheduled to visit the city. An unwelcome group may also be coming to Joplin this weekend.

Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., has a press release on its website stating they will show up and protest on Sunday. At the same time, a counter protest is also being organized on the Facebook page called "Counter Protest Westboro Coming to Joplin."

Yes, the same Westboro Baptist Church that has made national news for protesting military funerals is heading to Joplin. Topeka is about three hours away, an easy drive for anyone in the Phelps family.

However, logistics may limit the ability of the church to do anything in Joplin. The damaged areas are still under lockdown. Residents and property owners, as well as emergency workers, are the only ones allowed in the destruction zone. Westboro certainly won't get anywhere close to damaged areas. They won't get near shelters, as homeless and injured people need to rest and recover.

[ For complete coverage of politics and policy, go to Yahoo! Politics ]

Obama will likely tour the damaged areas. Where he will meet with residents has yet to be determined, as is his arrival time. Hopefully Obama will speak at the memorial service at 1 p.m. to offer hope and inspiration. If he stays in the damaged area, Westboro won't even get close to the president.

The counter protest to parlay the church protesters so far states they will form up at 10:30 a.m. at North Park Mall. Over 6,600 people have "liked" the page on Facebook. Some people are coming from as far away as Illinois.

Joplin is a town badly hurting. If anyone comes all the way from out of town to counter Westboro's presence, I also urge them to volunteer a few hours at a shelter if they are able to help out. It shows WBC the true meaning of being a member of a spiritual community by spreading love and compassion instead of hate and vitriol.

Westboro has no business being in Joplin. If it is like any other threatened protest: All Phelps and his followers want is to get extra attention by even releasing information about their protest schedule.

Westboro to Picket at Mars Hill Megachurch in Seattle

The controversial, hate-spewing group Westboro Baptist Church is taking its angry message to a Seattle-area megachurch this Sunday.

Westboro announced on its website that its members will picket at Mars Hill Church’s Federal Way campus in Auburn, Wash., against the church’s teaching that “God love [sic] everyone and Jesus died for the sins of all of mankind.” The group claims Mars Hill is leading people to destruction by lying that God loves everyone.

“God does not love everyone – in fact, He hates the majority of mankind, and has purposed to send them to hell when they die,” reads the Westboro picket schedule page.

In response, senior pastor Mark Driscoll wrote a blog Thursday in which he said the Topeka, Kan.-based church is “more of a political hate group who use the name of God to advance their agenda.”

“Doctrinally, they are extreme five-point Calvinists, or what I like to call Crazy Calvinists," explains Driscoll, who heads the 10-campus church. "They basically believe the underlying message of the Bible is one of God’s hatred and wrath against humankind, and that the Bible is properly interpreted through that filter.”

"Therefore, they believe all mentions of God’s love in the Bible are in reference to God’s Christian elect and not applicable in any way to others outside God’s elect."

FBI Invited Controversial Church To Talk To Agents

The FBI first invited the church group to address the FBI's law enforcement training classes back in 2008. And initially, there were no apparent problems. But the most recent sessions, including three at Quantico and one in Manassass, Va., stirred up controversy.

Timothy Phelps, a church leader and the youngest son of Fred Phelps, said he spoke to local law enforcement professionals at the FBI Academy at Quantico and then again to agents who had been in the bureau three years or less at an FBI facility in Manassass.

He said the program was designed to teach agents "how to stay measured when they are speaking with a witness or a suspect with whom they have a strong, visceral disagreement."

Phelps conceded that strong, visceral disagreement is one of the emotions Westboro inspires. And that's what he found in the classrooms he visited. Officials say there were about 50 local law enforcement officials and agents in each session, and they say Westboro wasn't paid for its participation. Phelps confirmed that no money exchanged hands.

"We did an opening dialogue about the history of the church and what led us to this point in our ministry and specifically led us to the point where we were holding protests or pickets in proximity to the soldiers' funerals," Phelps said. "Then the class opened up and they were entitled to ask any questions they wanted."

Phelps said the sessions were contentious. "Some of the students in the class take the gloves off and basically push the envelope about, 'what will happen when the day comes that your so-called leader tells you to use violence,' " Phelps said. "Our leader won't tell us to do anything except what is written in scripture. We don't have a leader like what they want to believe we have. ... We have a preacher."

Law enforcement officials who attended the session said it was focused on domestic terrorism. They were told that the FBI invited Westboro members to the class so police officers and agents could see extremists up close and understand what makes them tick.

The FBI claims the church group knew this. But Phelps said he had no idea he was part of a domestic terrorism curriculum.

Phelps said if the FBI lied to them about why they were there, he would not be surprised. "Law enforcement across this nation uses false information frequently with us," he said. But there were people at the FBI who were surprised — and angry — when they found out about the Westboro sessions.

FBI Wanted to Learn of Domestic Terrorism From Westboro Church

The FBI confirmed Wednesay that members of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church were part of a training program for agents and police officials at two separate bureau facilities, a move that has now been abandoned.

According to an NPR report, the FBI had first invited the members of the infamous church based at Topeka, Kan., in 2008, but it was in the most recent sessions in Virginia, three at Quantico and one in Manassass, that controversy erupted.

Paul Bresson, the bureau spokesman, said that the invitation to Westboro “was done in an effort to establish open dialogue in an academic setting to train law enforcement on how to more effectively engage with the activist community,” The Associated Press reported.

Timothy Phelps, a church leader and the youngest son of Westboro head Fred Phelps, told NPR he had spoken to local law enforcement professionals at the FBI Academy at Quantico and then again Manassass.

He said the program was designed to teach agents “how to stay measured when they are speaking with a witness or a suspect with whom they have a strong, visceral disagreement,” NPR reported.

And, Westboro Baptist Church specializes in arousing strong, visceral disagreements.

Westboro Baptist Church Gets a Taste of Its Own Medicine
3/20/13

The most hateful church in America has some colorful new neighbors. This week, members of the Florida-based nonprofit Planting Peace unveiled a project months in the making: Equality House, an activism center located directly across from the Westboro Baptist Church outside Topeka, Kansas.

From now on, the group known for picketing the funerals of everyone from military members killed in action to Mr. Rogers, in protest of America’s tolerance of homosexuality, will wake up every morning and stare at an LGBT rainbow—after Equality House members painted the building to match the gay pride flag.

Project Peace director of operations Davis Hammet spoke to TakePart from inside Equality House. He tells us the idea for the project originated months ago, after Planting Peace members heard about the protest of Josef Miles—a 10-year-old who took it upon himself to hold a sign in front of Westboro that read “God Hates No One.”

If 10-year-old Miles had the courage to hold a counter-protest—why couldn’t Planting Peace?

“We walked around Westboro’s neighborhood on Google street view and thought: ‘It would be awesome to get a house right there and paint it rainbow,’ ” says Hammet.

As it turned out, the house directly across the street from the church was for sale. After months of negotiations, Project Peace purchased the property for just over $80,000.

“Shortly after I moved in, someone from Westboro almost backed over me in her car. It was an accident, and she apologized. But it was bizarre—this hate-filled person smiling and waving at me.”

Hammet says he has been living in the house for several weeks preparing for its grand unveiling. The group was scheduled to start painting the building last month, but was forced to delay after a brutal Kansas snowstorm.

Project Peace used the extra time to make friends in the local LGBT community.

Hammet says during that time, he only had a few run-ins with Westboro members.

“Before we launched, we tried to keep quiet. Shortly after I moved in, someone from Wetsboro almost backed over me in her car. It was an accident, and she apologized. But it was bizarre—this hate-filled person smiling and waving at me.”

Since the unveiling, Hammet says Westboro has been similarly cordial.

“[Westboro spokesperson] Shirley Phelps-Roper walked by and was taking some pictures yesterday,” he says. “She mentioned she really like the colors. Then she laughed and went back in the church. It seemed like she had a sense of humor about the whole thing. I’m sure in her eyes she just thinks we’re all going to hell.”

Hammet says his group hopes to use the publicity from Equality House to help launch an anti-bullying campaign among other initiatives.

“This is hopefully just the start,” he says. “We want this to be used to spark conversation about equality in every home. We believe the fastest way toward equality is by speaking out.”

For now, Equality House will likely be used as an activist training center. Despite its new exterior decorations, the facility remains rather modest. After weeks of sleeping on the floor, Hammet says he finally has a bed and a desk to work from:

“It’s pretty basic. But it could be barren and still be warm, because this place is full of love.”

The Westboro Baptist Church will protest at two playoff games, because apparently ‘#GodH8sTheNBA’
5/1/13
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/westboro-baptist-church-protest-two-playoff-games-because-161904717.html

In something that is news to us, apparently God hates the NBA. This seems pretty far-fetched, because in spite of a recent spate of injuries, some sort of Almighty Power has bestowed us with a fantastically entertaining postseason thus far, and a wonderfully sunny spring day for me to sit under while I write about the NBA all day.

According to a press release from the Westboro Baptist Church, though, God does hate the NBA. And this edict is so significant that the church has announced plans to picket at both Wednesday’s Game 5 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets, and Thursday’s Game 6 between the Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets. Apparently the Big Man Upstairs, according to the Westboro Baptist Church, is really ticked off at Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant for wagging his fist at the sky before telling reporters that if a free agent veteran center was “happy, that’s cool with me.”

The free agent center in question is former Washington Wizards big man Jason Collins, who became the first active member of the four major pro sports leagues to announce that he was gay on Monday. So, by the Westboro Baptist Church’s unquestionable logic, this now means God hates the NBA.

Have they protested at abortion clinics as well? Honestly, I don't recall that they ever did, much less protest Gosnell's criminal trial going on now.

5 minute ABC news clip - apparently, one of the Phelps kids in this cult was born out of wedlock. Typical of these Churchianity types - ultimately, they too are blind concerning the sanctity of marriage and the family unit.

Satanists Perform ‘Gay Ritual’ at Westboro Gravesite

news report VIDEO: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/07/satanists-perform-gay-ritual-at-westboro-gravesite/

A group of satanists say they’ve given the controversial Westboro Baptist Church a taste of its own medicine, performing a same-sex ritual at the grave of the mother of the church’s founder.

Members of the Satanist Temple performed on Sunday what its spokesman describes as a “pink mass”  an admittedly made-up ritual, celebrating gay love, at the grave in Meridian, Miss.

Spokesman Lucien Greaves  doffed a headdress made of horns as two male couples, and a female couple recited scripture, lit candles and made out over the grave.

Members then posthumously declared Catherine Johnston, the mother of Westboro’s founder Fred Phelps, a lesbian.

The ritual was designed to get a rise of the WBC, the satanists said, an organization that’s earned a national reputation for getting a rise out of others.

Phelps is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, a fundamentalist congregation infamous for picketing at the funerals of celebrities, victims of disaster and terrorism, and U.S. soldiers killed in combat.

The church, located in Topeka, Kan., believes that the whole of the United States is in a state of sin because of gays. Members often protest at funerals carrying signs that read “God hates fags.”

The idea to stage a counter-protest by the New York based Satanist Temple after WBC members threatened to picket at funerals for those killed in the Boston Marathon bombings, Greaves told ABCNews.com.

The ritual took place at Magnolia Cemetery near a busy road, but Greaves said no one bothered the group of Satanists.

“Our right to believe that Fred Phelps now must believe that his mother is gay is inviolable,” said Greaves.  “No one can question our beliefs,” he said, mocking a Westboro talking point that was recently at the heart of Supreme Court case, which the church won.

A spokesman for Westboro, which has never shirked from publicity, told ABC that the “pink mass” only gave the church another moment to preach against gay people.

“I don’t care whether you’re dancing on a grave, in a hot air balloon, or standing on Mt. Kiliminjaro, homosexuality is a sin. And the punishment fixed for that sin is the death penalty,” said Westboro spokesman Steve Drain.

'We Hurt A Lot Of People,' Westboro Pastor's Granddaughter Says

Nearly a year after breaking with the Westboro Baptist Church, two of Pastor Fred Phelps' granddaughters are enjoying a new freedom. But as they tell a Canadian newspaper, they also want to extend empathy to those they hurt in the name of a cause championed by the man they call "Gramps."

Those are among the details that emerge in an interview in The Globe and Mail conducted in Montreal, where Megan and Grace Phelps-Roper are spending a month at the invitation of a Jewish community.

In a turnaround from their years in a church known for its fierce protests at the funerals of American soldiers and others in the name of denouncing homosexuality, the women often speak to community and educational groups about tolerance and religion.

That means Megan, 27, and Grace, 20, are living much of their life on the road. "We don't have a set home," Megan says.

Discussing her future goals, Megan tells the newspaper, "I'm at a complete loss. But I do know that I want to do good, to have empathy. Even though we intended to do good [with the picketing], we hurt a lot of people."

Like many Westboro Church members, they had been living just down the road from the church in Topeka, Kan. And they say they understand the certainty its members show in stating their beliefs — even though they no longer agree with them.

"The way the church presents it is, there's the WBC and the rest of the world. And the rest of the world is evil. The WBC is the only place in the world in our generation that is telling the truth of God," Megan says. Over time, those little things built up, and there were so many of them. Once you step out of it for a second, and you're out of that vacuum, things change."

The sisters also say that it was very hard to leave their parents and siblings. Before their departure, it was made clear to them that leaving the church would be the same as leaving the family.

"We were both terrified after leaving," Megan says. "I was afraid we were going to hell. Many times when we were driving, I thought God was going to kill us."

"I won't get to hear my brothers playing piano again or see my parents' hair go gray," Grace says.

A driving factor in their departure was a series of email and Twitter exchanges between Megan, who ran the church's social media efforts, and David Abitbol, the editor of the Jewlicious blog, who repeatedly challenged the church's stance on Jews. They eventually met in person.

Honestly - that's how I felt growing up in this lukewarm, modern-day organized church system - fear and bondage, pretty much. And ultimately, it was all of the pastors, "denomination" leaders, "seminary" professors/leaders that would get a free ride on everything.

Ultimately - you have no idea how many crazy things we were taught.(ie-if you can't focus on the pastor's sermon and if you're heart isn't with the church on Sundays, then you're letting the devil harass you)

Westboro Baptist Announces Intention to Protest Bill Cosby; Says God 'Rewarded' Comedian With Murder of Son

The Westboro Baptist Church has announced its intention to protest television star and comedian Bill Cosby next month and claims that God "rewarded" the entertainer through the murder of his son.

WBC claimed it was speaking out against Cosby, 76, who is scheduled to perform in Kansas City, Mo., on Feb. 1 as part of his "Far from Finished" tour, because he used "fame, fortune and influence" to promote "his own form of righteousness" and fit his "own humanistic notions."

"He has taken on the mantle of an 'activist' and instructed others to obtain an education, work hard, and practice some very basic morality – but he has not instructed them to obey God's commandments," it wrote in a statement.

The church also claimed that God had "rewarded" the comedian through his son Ennis' murder in 1997 and lambasted Cosby's decision to speak out against the death penalty for his child's murder following his death.

Bill Cosby Working on New Family Sitcom for NBC: I Want to See 'Warmth, Love and Surprise' on TV, Says Comedian

"Bill Cosby interjected himself into the criminal justice system to demand – again per his own standard and contrary to God's law – that no death penalty be used against the filthy murderer," it added.

Cosby's "The Cosby Show" played for eight seasons in the mid-1980s to early 1990s. He recently announced that he would be returning to television and signed a deal earlier this month with NBC to star as a dad of a multigenerational family in a new sitcom.

"I want to be able to deliver a wonderful show to [a] network," Cosby told TheWrap.com in November. "Because there is a viewership out there that wants to see comedy, and warmth, and love, and surprise, and cleverness, without going into the party attitude."

WBC is not affiliated with any Baptist denomination, and is known for protesting using vitriolic and abusive messages and placards at the funerals of Iraq and Afghanistan War casualties. It thanked God for a 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, China, that killed hundreds of people and added that they were praying "for many more earthquakes to kill many more thousands of impudent and ungrateful Chinese." It also intended to protest a Joplin, Mo., memorial service for victims of a tornado in May 2011, but the town's residents refused the group entry.

More recently, counter-protesters have appeared at WBC demonstrations picketing a soldier's funeral and four churches.

Well, they might as well plan protests for the other 250m+ or so LOST people in this country when they(or their family members) die b/c of just that - b/c they promote their own form of righteousness to fit their own humanistic notions.

Matthew 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Uhm...Yeah, like it's only limited to Bill Cosby. Roll Eyes

I hear what your saying, but they are correct about Cosby. He's become rather vocal these last few years, while playing on a tv characters personality, The Cosby Show, promoting some kind of family man persona, all the while not promoting Jesus.

I don't agree with the tactics of Westboro, but they do at times point out the truth about people, which to me, that's classic "accuser of our brethren", going around pointing the finger at others when they need to examine themselves first.

Obviously Cosby isn't the only one, he's just the current target because he's got his new tour starting. It's a money thing ya know!

Westboro Baptist Church founder is dying, his son says

A second Phelps brother estranged from Westboro Baptist Church confirmed Sunday morning that Fred Waldron Phelps Sr. is in poor health and has been excommunicated from the church.

"Just a quick note to assure you the information you wrote and published this morning is accurate," Mark Phelps emailed to The Topeka Capital-Journal at 10:30 a.m.

"I do not know anything more than you know, at this time, but what you wrote I know to be true, personally, just as Nathan (Phelps, a brother of Mark Phelps) knows to be true also."

A spokesman for Westboro Baptist Church confirmed Sunday that Pastor Fred Waldron Phelps Sr. is a patient in the Midland Care Hospice in Topeka.

The irony...

Westboro Baptist Church left confused by 'Sorry for your loss' counter-protest

Leave it to the power of almighty Lord to try to bring the world together. When Westboro Baptist Church members angrily picketed the singer's concert Friday in Missouri in response to her recent pro-gay comments, counter-protesters had a compassionate response: signs of condolence for the group's recently deceased pastor Fred Phelps. "Sorry for your loss," read one large poster. "Live your life and be awesome," said another.
"We realized that it wasn't so much about antagonizing them but sending out the countered safe that we are here for people who need that message and need that positivity," sign creator Megan Coleman told KSHB-TV. Her well intended message was lost in translation to some Westboro members, however. "I don't even know what they're saying," said Westboro member Steve Dralin, who is poised to be the church's next leader.

Watch What Happens When Thousands of Residents Confront Westboro Protesters

It was an epic showdown that sent Westboro Baptist Church members fleeing the scene after only 10 minutes of picketing Sunday afternoon in Oklahoma.

Westboro congregants, known for protesting against gays and lesbians and at military funerals, regularly contend that God punishes mankind with natural disasters.

And considering that residents in Moore, Okla., suffered a horrific tornado last year, the virulent church group was apparently in town to affirm its belief that the deadly storm was evidence of God’s wrath.

Westboro members, who believe God sent the tornado, had a permit to appear for a half hour outside of Central Junior High, the building that has been housing grade school students since the storm ravaged Plaza Towers Elementary School, KFOR-TV reported.

But the community wasn’t willing to let Westboro picket in peace. More than two thousand Moore residents took to the streets on foot and on motorcycles to counter the protest.

They honked horns, laughed, cheered and held signs with messages like, “Thank God Fred’s Dead,” referencing to the recent death of Westboro founder Fred Phelps, and “WBC Wrecking Crew,” among other messages aimed at the church.

It didn’t take long for a number of frustrated individuals to cross the street to confront Westboro picketers, sending the church members fleeing.

Police held back angry residents while the parishioners ran to their vehicles. Watch the crowd cheer as Westboro members run away and cops try to maintain order:

“I was afraid of a riot really. I didn’t know how long Westboro would stay, which they were smart to leave,” resident Dan Eccles told KFOR-TV.

He continued, “They shagged tail, got in them cars and was leaving in a hurry. Oh yeah, they was gone!”

Residents told local media that the community has rallied since last year’s deadly tornado and that Westboro’s presence simply wasn’t welcome.

“If you come out here you’re going to get all of us telling you to go home,” Brenda Fox, a native of Moore, told KOCO-TV.

Police did not arrest anyone in connection with the protests, saying that the scene was surprisingly calm considering the intense emotions that were raging.

Westboro Baptist Church to picket funeral of Kansas Jewish center shooting victims

The Westboro Baptist Church...announced Wednesday that it would picket the funeral of two of the three victims of Sunday’s shooting attack at a Jewish Community Center in Overland Park. The church, which is considered “homophobic, anti-Semitic hate group” by the Anti-Defamation League, is infamous for picketing the funerals of American servicemen killed in Afganistan and Iraq and for its vocal anti-homosexual position.
