A sour method for measuring sweetness

According to a Florida-based pro-life organization, a biotech company is using aborted fetal cell lines to test food flavor enhancers.

Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Children of God for Life, is calling for a boycott of major food companies partnering with Senomyx, a San Diego-based firm that produces artificial flavor enhancers using aborted fetal cell lines to test their products. She explains the process.

"They take their artificial flavor enhancers, which are made using little molecules, and they put them on that aborted fetal cell line [which] elicits a response...," says Vinnedge. "So they know whether they're getting the right reaction, whether it's going to produce that proper sweet taste as opposed to maybe another flavor."

The pro-life activist argues there is no need to use aborted fetal tissue in this process, saying the truth is that Senomyx can use other cell lines, such as from animals. That, she says, raises the question of why those alternative sources are not used instead.

"...In one of their responses to us, [Nestlé] said this is such a well-established cell line that was used widely in scientific research -- and so what? It doesn't matter that it is. It's just readily available," she remarks.

The tissue in question comes from a baby aborted in the 1970s. Scientists create a cell line, freeze it in liquid nitrogen, and then take it out for use in their experiments.

The primary firms doing business with Senomyx are Pepsico, Kraft, Campbell Soup, and Nestlé.

Pro-lifers' beef with Pepsi

Several pro-life groups are calling for a boycott of PepsiCo because of its business relationship with a company that uses aborted fetal cells to develop artificial flavor enhancers.

The partnership between Pepsi and Senomyx, a biotech firm that uses cells from aborted babies, is an issue with pro-lifers (see related story). Debi Vinnedge of Children of God for Life suggests that PepsiCo could be using another option.

"Senomyx makes flavor enhancers for various food companies, and what they're doing is, in their research and development, they're using aborted fetal cell lines to test those flavor enhancers," she explains.

That is done to see if foods have the proper flavor. Campbell's Soup used to do that also, but has since severed its relationship with Senomyx.

"But Pepsi, on the other hand, has taken a stand of 'well...it's just helping us to create great flavors in our drinks.' They just seem to be missing the boat," the pro-lifer contends. "So several pro-life groups decided that we should get together and boycott these companies."

Information on how to contact Pepsi is on the ministry's website. Meanwhile the Children of God for Life president is planning to launch boycotts against other firms, including Nestlé, to encourage them to stop using cell lines from aborted babies.

Campbell Soup cuts ties, others elusive

Outrage continues over major food companies and their relationship with a firm that uses aborted fetal cells to test food flavor enhancers.

Campbell Soup, Nestlé, Solae, Pepsico and Kraft have been listed as partners with the bio-tech firm Senomyx (see earlier story). Debi Vinnedge, executive director of Children of God for Life, tells OneNewsNow one company was quick to respond.

"Campbell Soup actually met earlier and made the decision to sever all relations with Senomyx," she reports. The firm has also been removed from the Senomyx website.

Solae has responded by saying it does not have an active relationship with Senomyx, but it is still listed as a partner on the latter's website. Nestlé points out the fetal cell line being used worldwide is from a baby aborted in the 1970s, and it would be difficult to stop using them. The response from Vinnedge?

"Well, that's ridiculous. Of course they can do it," says the spokeswoman. "There's no reason to use aborted fetal cell lines to test food additives."

She adds that Pepsi was "very, very evasive" in its response. "Pepsi simply talked about how great it was going to make their beverages taste," she states, "and that their goal was to reduce sugar and MSG in products."

Vinnedge says the boycott continues against the remaining firms.

Company Using Aborted Fetal Cells in Flavors Shields Partners

The company that was found to be testing their food additives using fetal cells from abortions is now working to hide the names of the corporations it contracts with as a pro-life boycott continues.
LifeNews.com reported on the controversy in March when information came to light showing biotech company Senomyx was found to be testing their food additives using fetal cells from a line based on cells from a baby victimized by abortion. Senomyx ignored a letter from the pro-life group Children of God for Life, which complained about its practices.

Now, the pro-life group informs Lifenews.com that Senomyx is attempting to hide the names of their corporate partners by removing them from their website.

“Public backlash has apparently caused much consternation for the biomedical firm that has ignored consumer complaints and continues to use HEK-293 (human embryonic kidney) cells in the research and development of artificial flavor enhancers,” says Debi Vinnedge, executive director of CGL.

The move by Senomyx comes after PepsiCo, one of the biggest corporate partners, ignored pro-life criticism in a canned recent response to customer letters, saying, “With respect to the flavor discovery research with Senomyx, we utilize techniques that have been the gold standard for several decades.”

“If this ‘gold standard’ is no big deal, then why are they trying so hard to hide the truth?” asked Vinnedge. “PepsiCo and Senomyx have done everything in their power to trivialize what they are doing, when in fact what they are doing is only further damaging their public image.”

Vinnedge says she wrote to all of the members of the board of directors of PepsiCo in late June noting their responsibility to protect shareholders’ interests and cautioned that further action would be taken if nothing is done. Since PepsiCo is funding the research and development and will pay royalties to Senomyx for product sales, the company has the ability to change the technology being utilized, but she indicates none of the board members have responded.

Scientists are reporting development of a new approach for producing large quantities of human-derived gelatin that could become a substitute for some of the 300,000 tons of animal-based gelatin produced annually for gelatin-type desserts, marshmallows, candy and innumerable other products.

People gelatin, it's hopefully not what's for dinner

They probably wouldn't want to market it as blood-red.

The jigglers are people!!! The jigglers are people!!! Keep your spoons close, we could have our very own Soylent Green moment in the future.

Fast Company has the story of how human gelatin genes could provide a more stable, safer version of gelatin than pig and cow bones and skin (the current raw ingredients). The question is whether you're ready to accept gelatin made from genetic material.

Once you get past the potential 'ick' factor, the idea is fascinating. Fast Company explains how the process works:

Beijing University of Chemical Technology researchers created the slightly creepy product by sticking human gelatin genes into a strain of yeast that can produce gelatin with reliable features -- and a virtual guarantee that it won't be contaminated with pathogens or cause immune responses (because the gelatin molecules are based on human DNA sequences).

While the current market for the product  has yet to be determined, human gelatin is not yet commercially available (although a company in San Francisco, Fibro-Gen, is testing "recombinant human gelatin" as a vaccine stabilizer), it does make you start to wonder about what you're willing to eat.

Company hiding affiliates from public

Senomyx, a company accused of using cells from aborted babies to test flavor enhancers, has removed the names of its clients from its website, likely in response to public backlash.

The biotech firm is producing flavor enhancers for several major corporations, including PepsiCo. Since exposing its use of cells from aborted babies, Children of God for Life Executive Director Debi Vinnedge tells OneNewsNow two firms have ended their business relationships with the company. Several, however, still remain.

"You know, people are outraged, and they have been writing to these companies," Vinnedge reports. "And I was notified that Senomyx had actually taken all the company names off of their website in an attempt to shield them from the public."

The pro-lifer tells more about how the aborted baby cells are used in Senomyx's lab.

"Whenever they introduce a flavor to the cells that they're using, there's a certain protein in those cells, and it sends a chemical signal out [that] says 'yes you've got it,'" she explains. "In other words, it's basically their way of confirming that they've achieved the right flavor that they're trying to get."

But Vinnedge stresses the same result can be obtained from other sources, such as insects or other mammalian cells -- anything that has the needed type of protein. So she urges people to continue boycotting one of the Senomyx customers, Pepsico, as a way to encourage other clients to stop using fetal cells from aborted babies.

Pepsi shareholders demand company stop using aborted fetal cell lines in flavor research

LARGO, FL, October 25, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The pro-life organization Children of God for Life announced today the filing of a shareholder resolution with the Securities and Exchange Commission and PepsiCo, protesting the use of aborted a fetal cell line for the research and development of flavor enhancers for their beverages.

In August 2010, PepsiCo entered into a 4-year agreement with Senomyx for the development of artificial high-potency sweeteners for PepsiCo beverages.  Under the contract, PepsiCo is paying $30 million to Senomyx for the research and future royalties on PepsiCo products sold using Senomyx technology.

When the pro-life group wrote both companies requesting they use one of several non-objectionable, viable cell lines listed in their patents, Senomyx did not respond.  PepsiCo did reply however, saying that this research, using cell lines derived from aborted babies, would produce “great tasting, lower-calorie beverages.”

Appalled by the response, Children of God for Life launched a boycott, and was joined by over two dozen other pro-life organizations .  The boycott now includes supporters from Australia, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Poland and the UK.

Meanwhile, letters sent to all PepsiCo Board Members and Senior Management have gone unanswered.

“Shareholders have a right to know the truth about what PepsiCo is doing with their hard-earned savings,” stated Children of God for Life Executive Director, Debi Vinnedge. “PepsiCo’s lack of consideration to the public’s moral sensibilities has only served to fuel the fire and threatens stock values, retirement pensions and investments.”

The PepsiCo shareholder who filed the resolution requested that “the Board of Directors adopt a corporate policy that recognizes human rights and employs ethical standards which do not involve using the remains of aborted human beings in both private and collaborative research and development agreements.”

PepsiCo’s own Code of Conduct boasts that they “deal with customers, suppliers, the public and our competitors in an ethical and appropriate manner.”

“There is nothing ethical or appropriate in the way they are exploiting the remains of an innocent aborted child,” noted Vinnedge.

One 12-year-old Florida boy who learned of PepsiCo’s research from his mom’s prolife news reports was upset enough to take action himself.  At a 40 Days for Life kickoff, Gene spoke passionately to the audience.

“When I found out about this, I was sick to my stomach,” he said.  “I decided I wouldn’t let this happen so I came up with a way to boycott Pepsi products called United Schools for Life.  This program will attempt to remove all Pepsi products from the schools in our diocese.”  Gene hopes to spread his mission through the entire state.

Vinnedge said she was moved by Gene’s initiative and courage.

“We hope that PepsiCo senior management gives serious consideration to what this boy has done,” she noted.  “Even a child knows this is wrong. God bless him for standing up for the unborn who have no voice of their own!”

Yeah, not opposed to that at all either. Good idea too.

Kraft is easy anyway; they put so much HFCS and crap in their products - I can taste it. I mean, in my humble opinion; ranch dressing shouldn't be noticeably 'sweet', hehe.

all store brands are made by a major producer with just a different label and a different recipe. And the really scarey thing is the stuff we do not know that is going on with the food we by.

Which is why it is always good, at the very least, to pray before you eat. No, I'm not saying McDonald's foods won't harm you if you pray before you eat it(ESPECIALLY if you KNOW they're harmful), but like you said, there's just some things we don't know.

Also, Jesus and the Apostles stressed the importance of fasting - especially in the times we are living in now, I see why as well. No wonder why the other modern day bible perversions have blotted out fasting.

Food containing fetuses targeted under new Oklahoma bill

You might think this is a story out of 'The Onion' but it is a real story.

An Oklahoma lawmaker files a bill to ban the making and selling of food or products that use aborted human fetuses.

State Senator Ralph Shortey says he's done research and found reports that companies have used stem cells in the research and development of food.

“I don’t know if it is happening in Oklahoma, it may be, it may not be.  What I am saying is that if it does happen then we are not going to allow it to manufacture here," says Shortey

The lawmaker that represents Oklahoma County couldn’t give any specific examples.

“There is a potential that there are companies that are using aborted human babies in their research and development of basically enhancing flavor for artificial flavors," says Shortey.

Some argue there has to be more to the proposed bill and believe it is a back door attempt to ban stem cell research.

Shortey says it is not, although he admits, he would support and vote for a ban on stem cell research in the state.

A number of food makers have denied the claims.

Pepsico to cut 8,700 jobs; 4Q net rises

PepsiCo said it plans to cut 8,700 jobs, or about 3 percent of its workforce, as it tries to offset higher costs for ingredients and increased spending on advertising and marketing in North America.

The maker of everything from Pepsi soda to Doritos chips said it expects the restructuring will save the company $1.5 billion by 2014 — on top of $1.5 billion in cost cutting it previously announced.

Pepsi announced the layoffs on Thursday as it reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit, but forecast a decline in adjusted 2012 earnings. On the mixed news, the company's shares fell 2.7 percent.

Hopefully they will go out of buisness. Sick disgusting corporation.

Obama agency rules Pepsi use of cells derived from aborted fetus ‘ordinary business’

The Pepsi Company, which is set to release the new product Pepsi Next in the coming weeks, is facing a more robust boycott as pro-life activists protest the company use of cells derived from an aborted fetus in flavor-enhancing research. But Pepsi has succeeded, with help from the Obama Administration, in keeping its controversial operations from consideration by its shareholders.

In a decision delivered Feb 28th, President Obama’s Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) ruled that PepsiCo’s use of cells derived from aborted fetal remains in their research and development agreement with Senomyx to produce flavor enhancers falls under “ordinary business operations.”

The letter signed by Attorney Brian Pitko of the SEC Office of Chief Counsel was sent in response to a 36-page document submitted by PepsiCo attorneys in January, 2012.  In that filing, PepsiCo pleaded with the SEC to reject the Shareholder’s Resolution filed in October 2011 that the company “adopt a corporate policy that recognizes human rights and employs ethical standards which do not involve using the remains of aborted human beings in both private and collaborative research and development agreements.”

PepsiCo lead attorney George A. Schieren noted that the resolution should be excluded because it “deals with matters related to the company’s ordinary business operations” and that “certain tasks are so fundamental to run a company on a day-to-day basis that they could not be subject to stockholder oversight.”

Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of Children of God for Life, the organization that exposed the PepsiCo-Senomyx collaboration last year was “appalled by the apathy and insensitivity” of both PepsiCo executives and the Obama administration.

“We’re not talking about what kind of pencils PepsiCo wants to use – we are talking about exploiting the remains of an aborted child for profit,” she said. “Using human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) to produce flavor enhancers for their beverages is a far cry from routine operations!”

PepsiCo also requested the resolution be excluded because it “probed too deeply into matters of a complex nature upon which shareholders cannot make an informed judgment.”

“In other words, PepsiCo thinks its stockholders are too stupid to understand what they are doing with the remains of aborted children,” Vinnedge stated. “Well they are about to find out just how smart the public really is when they turn up the heat on the world-wide boycott!”

Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey has proposed a bill SB1418 banning the sale of products that are developed with or contain aborted fetal remains. In the case of Pepsi products, the cells derived from the aborted fetus do not end up in the final product.

“We commend the Senator for his courageous move,” noted Vinnedge. “The public is already saying no thanks to all Pepsi beverages and Pepsi Next is just that – the “next” product to avoid!”

To date, the world-wide boycott has expanded to include Canada, Germany, Poland, UK, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand.

HEK CELL (Human Embryonic Kidney 293 cells), also often referred to as HEK 293, 293 cells, or less precisely as HEK cells are a specific cell line originally derived from human embryonic kidney cells grown in tissue culture. HEK 293 cells are very easy to grow and transfect very readily and have been widely-used in cell biology research for many years. They are also used by the biotechnology industry to produce therapeutic proteins and viruses for gene therapy.

Below is a list of products that contain HEK cells.

Gelatin Made with Human DNA Will Make Snacks Safer

Gelatin is an essential ingredient in gummy snacks and marshmallows, not to mention vaccines and drug capsules. Manufacturing it is a messy, inconsistent process, but now scientists can create perfect gelatin with human DNA. The only obstacle seems to be our own squeamishness.

In 2011, scientists in Beijing reported on a method of creating large amounts of gelatin by inserting human DNA fragments into yeast. Human DNA-derived gelatin has actually been in use for a while, in vaccine preparation and the gel caps that many over the counter drugs come in. This method created such large quantities of gelatin that it would be practical to use it for more common consumer goods like candy and baking supplies.

This is actually a brilliant breakthrough, because it avoids a whole lot of problems inherent in “natural” gelatin production. It’s incredibly difficult to get consistent results when manufacturing gelatin, and consistency is very important with vaccines. Because gelatin is derived from animal by-products, it can cause allergic reactions or be off limits to people with ethical or religious reasons for avoiding animal products.

Despite all the upside, almost every media outlet that initially covered this story lead with something to the effect of, “Ewwwww gross!” Here are some of the words and phrases I came across while researching this: “ghoulish,” “cannibalism,” “the guilty party in a sci-fi show about enslaved human clones.” One writer compared it to the infamous ice cream made from human breast milk.

Here’s the thing – gelatin derived from human DNA is not made with human tissues in any way. It’s pure chemistry. Regular gelatin? It’s rendered by boiling a mess of animal byproducts like pig skins, cattle bones and entire horses. And people are worried about a few nucleic acids?

Would you eat cheese made from HUMAN FEET and ARMPITS? Scientists create stomach-churning delicacies using skin bacteria

Scientist Christina Agapakis and scent expert Sissel Tolaas gathered bacteria for their project called 'Selfmade'

A total of 11 cheeses were created for an exhibition in Dublin

Each cheese was created from starter cultures sampled from human skin

These samples were taken from armpits, a foot and a bellybutton

It's long been known than a smelly pair of feet bears more than a slight resemblance to a block of ripe cheese, but scientists have taken this link to the next level by making cheese from a foot.
Experts have made the stomach-churning creations using bacteria from the human foot as well as a belly button and even an armpit.
Scientist Christina Agapakis and scent expert Sissel Tolaas gathered microbes for their project 'Selfmade' which recently debuted at an exhibition about synthetic biology in Dublin.

Synthetic Vegan Cheese from Human DNA Strands Coming Soon?

A San Francisco based, synthetic biohacker group has made hundreds of headlines for creating cheese without the use of cows. Young biohackerspace people from BioCurious and CounterCultureLabs make up the group.

They beat out 243 other groups to take first place at this year's iGEM "jamboree" competition. iGEM stands for international genetically engineered machine. The winner's group fundraiser brought nearly $40,000 from donors - over double the amount they needed. They claim to have approval from many vegans, without the anticipated anti-GMO backlash.

Interestingly, they have dubbed the product 'Real Vegan Cheese' because they claim that other vegan cheese-like foods are merely substitutes.

Genetically engineered bakers yeast is inserted with DNA strands, some of them human - to cut down on allergies they said - to make the yeast into a "milk" protein creating factory. But no actual mammal DNA is used. The yeast stays behind for the end product. They say: "To create our proteins, we study animal genomes, choose milk-protein genetic sequences, and synthesize those genes."

Again they emphasize,

Plus the purified proteins will be identical to those found in regular cheese, and will not contain any GMO!

The New Yorker explains what synthetic biohackers are about and how they differentiate themselves from other genetic engineers:

At the core of the Jamboree was a discipline called synthetic biology. Whereas developers of genetically modified organisms—herbicide-resistant soybeans, carotene-enriched rice, faster-growing salmon—tweak a plant or an animal’s DNA with genes borrowed from elsewhere in nature, synthetic biologists assemble new gene sequences from scratch. The science has attracted a good deal less press than G.M.O.s, but it has already moved beyond the lab. [emphasis added]

iGEM wants to foster undergraduates into applying systematic biotech, using engineering and biological parts to operate in living cells. An alchemy of sorts.

The group says they are independent, open source, non-profit and base their actions off of a love for the environment. They disarm public scrutiny by inviting questions, even critical ones, and attempting to foster transparency. They claim they don't want to change the conversation on synthetic biology, but rather take an inviting approach and quell fears of safety aimed at their project. The invitation for people to get involved is offered to replace the question of should scientists and companies be allowed to do "X"? In other words, the acceptance of synthetic biology will happen as a result of public participation and engagement.

During their iGEM presentation, they were asked about the legitimacy of doing something just because we can, as they stated. The man asked them to reframe the idea and say if you should. While not as vague as responding "why not?" they reiterated a love for the environment, animal rights, encouraging a plant-based diet and teaching the public. Perhaps the gentleman asking meant - why this? Is there not a better way to solve the inconvenience of vegan fare and the environment aside from synthetic biology, i.e. using the human genome?

As for other safety concerns, they disregarded any claims to casein protein, or, their casein micelles being a precursor to cancer.

This is not the first project to create a food, or a sort-of human-based food under the auspices of "sustainability." There are Bill Gates' vegan, plant-based eggs. Genetically engineered cows that produce human breast milk (I guess cows are still useful for something). Test tube meat. Do you see a pattern? For starters, it's the idea that the naturally-born counterparts are inherently "bad" and that we should get used to a world without them.

While they claim it's not an actual GMO with no DNA or GE ingredients remaining, some people find it unsettling to eat human protein-derived food products. Comparisons to the "zombie" craze and Soylent Green are surfacing. The zombie trend has prompted restaurants to try for burgers made to taste and feel like human flesh - sort of the inverse of using the actual human DNA blueprint to create cheese. We also do a lot of "recycling" of ourselves already. For instance, the use of our own sewage to fertilize crops. The practice has been called "biosolids" since the 1990s to make the idea more - ahem - palatable to the public.

Since some people will not accept the human-derived milk protein, they are also creating "good ol' fashioned" cow protein-derived vegan cheese - imagine that...

Since the group is working closely with the FDA on legal guidelines, it is very likely their project will come to fruition - it's just a matter of when. It's still "a work in progress."

Tell us what you think...

Urban Death Project seeks to compost dead humans to feed the crops: has it really come to this?

A Seattle architect named Katrina Spade has proposed a new solution for urban food production: convert the recently deceased into nutritious compost to feed the food crops.

The project is called the Urban Death Project, and it describes the process of turning dead humans into food as follows:

The Urban Death Project is a compost-based renewal system. At the heart of the project is a three-story core, within which bodies and high-carbon materials are placed. Over the span of a few months, with the help of aerobic decomposition and microbial activity, the bodies decompose fully, leaving a rich compost. The Urban Death Project is not simply a system for turning our bodies into soil-building material. It is also a space for the contemplation of our place in the natural world, and a ritual to help us say goodbye to our loved ones by connecting us with the cycles of nature.

The Urban Death Project website describes the project as a 501(c) non-profit, and a fundraising effort is due to launch March 30th on Kickstarter. The donate page explains, "Your gift supports the creation of a meaningful, equitable, and ecological alternative for the care and processing of our deceased."

Human sewage is already used as compost for food crops
As a matter of full disclosure, I'm happy to say right up front that I am the developer of UltraClean Super Plant Food sold at SupplySource.com and that our plant food has NO composted dead people in it. (Perhaps I should add that to the label?)

Nor does it contain human sewage waste as is frequently found in the majority of compost products sold at big box stores across America. Those products are derived from so-called "biosolids" which are sourced from human waste sludge mixed with other biomass sources such as dried leaves and plant waste.

Yes: in America today, if you buy compost from the big box stores -- or even directly from some cities -- you are growing your garden vegetables in composted human waste. Lovely...

The Urban Death Project wants to take it one step further. Instead of just composting the feces and sewage from humans, their idea is to compost the entire bodies of the deceased and turn them into nutrients for urban food production. As Fellowship of the Minds reports, this sounds a whole lot like "Soylent Green."

On one hand, death is a natural cycle of life; but then again...
From an environmental perspective, of course, the idea of composting human bodies into nutrients for plants isn't as strange as it might sound. In fact, the far more bizarre ritual is pumping dead bodies full of embalming fluids and burying them in overpriced luxury caskets full of synthetic resins and fibers. Embalming fluids are extremely toxic to the planet, and it seems far more respectful to put the body of a deceased person in the ground and let nature run its course.

After all, your body isn't YOU. The body is just a vessel for the non-material spirit (consciousness) which leaves the body at the moment of physical death. If your time with your physical body is over, then why not return the body to the Earth from which it came in as natural a state as possible?

So from that point of view, at least the intention of the Urban Death Project can't be faulted. The architect, Katrina Spade, appears to be approaching this from what she sees as a holistic community solution. But she's so far missing some huge problems with this plan, as I'll detail below. In fact, the Urban Death Project, if pursued as described on the website, would actually accelerate the death of the very same population it claims to help sustain.

Composting does not eliminate heavy metals and toxic chemicals
To understand the contamination problem with the Urban Death Project, consider this Q&A on the project website:

Q: Is it safe to compost bodies?

ANSWER: Composting creates heat, which kills common viruses and bacteria. Research into mortality composting of livestock has found that the temperature inside the compost reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which is high enough to kill off pathogens. Farmers are using mortality composting in order to safely dispose of their dead livestock, as well as to control odor and runoff. The Urban Death Project is fine tuning this process to be appropriate and meaningful for humans in an urban setting.

The problem with this explanation is that compost heat does not eliminate toxic heavy metals or toxic chemicals. It also doesn't eliminate prions, the folded proteins associated with Mad Cow Disease.

The average urban dweller's body, it turns out, is a toxic stew of lead, cadmium, mercury, fluorine, pesticides and other chemicals. To depict this, I created a Counterthink cartoon entitled Seafood Mercury Warning.

As the cartoon explains, sharks have been warned not to eat humans any longer because of all the toxic mercury found in the teeth of those humans.

This is not a joke: A typical city-dweller living in America today has an atrociously high level of toxic mercury in their teeth. On top of that, they have also bio-accumulated extremely high levels of lead, cadmium, arsenic and other toxic heavy metals which persist during composting. Lead is often bound to calcium in the human skeletal system. As those bones decompose, they release the lead which becomes part of the composted soil. This lead, in turn, is taken up by plant roots and shuttled into the food crops to be eaten by other humans.

Composting human bodies, in other words, would concentrate the toxic heavy metals and chemicals which are already causing a wave of degeneration and disease around the world. In fact, the mass of a modern human body would be considered "environmentally hazardous" by the EPA if it were water. That's because humans bio-accumulate and concentrate the toxins of modern agriculture, animal feed, toxic medicine and toxic home building materials.

The Urban Death Project advocates precisely the kind of activity which would concentrate these toxic heavy metals to higher and higher levels in the urban food supply:

Loved ones are encouraged to take some compost back to their own yards and gardens. The compost is also used to nourish the site, and city parks use it to fertilize plants and trees. In this way, the dead are folded back into the fabric of the city.

I found scary high levels of heavy metals in human hair vs. animal hair
As the science lab director of the Natural News Forensic Food Lab, I personally test food, water and environmental samples for toxic heavy metals. The ICP-MS instrument I use is sensitive down to parts per billion concentrations across most of the Table of Elements.

One of the things I have done with this instrument, mostly out of curiosity, is tested hair samples of willing participants compared to hair taken from animals on my ranch. Hair from my ranch animals includes dog hair (from brushing my dog), rabbit hair (from a recently deceased slow-poke rabbit my dogs caught), goat hair (from my happy goats) and chicken feathers (from my free-range chickens).

What I found was very disturbing: for many elements, human hair had over 100 times the heavy metals of ranch animal hair. This was especially noticeable for mercury, which is inhaled from mercury dental fillings (so-called "silver fillings") and then eliminated by the body through hair, urine, feces and so on. Notably, I consistently found very high mercury levels in the hair of people who had mercury fillings. That's no doubt because mercury fillings cause mercury contamination of the bloodstream that feeds hair follicles.

(I may, in fact, re-do this entire experiment in the near future with a larger data set of willing people to find out just how strong the correlation is between mercury fillings and mercury in your hair.)

But the point here is that if the Urban Death Project plans to use human bodies as compost, it's going to end up growing extremely contaminated food that's loaded with toxic heavy metals and synthetic chemicals. This, in turn, will unleash an accelerating death spiral as the next generation eats the toxic food grown in the toxic compost of the previous generation. With each successive generation, the concentrations of toxic elements rises and becomes more dangerous to the health of the community.

Contaminated food produces more dead bodies for the program...
It's not rocket science to realize that if you grow food using composted human bodies that are contaminated with toxic heavy metals, then you get a toxic food supply that causes even more disease and death.

This is not in any way respectful of the natural cycles of life. In fact, it is really a spiral of toxicity and death that will only concentrate the toxic heavy metals with each iteration of dead bodies being composting in the system.

From a scientific point of view, if a society is composting human bodies and human waste back into the food supply, that same society is inadvertently accumulating toxic heavy metals into higher and higher concentrations with each successive death. Over time, this creates an acutely toxic compost system giving rise to an acutely toxic food supply that accelerates disease and death, thereby reinforcing a vicious cycle of poisoning and death.

Much like the Romans likely went mad because of lead in their aqueducts, the Urban Death Project might very well end in a cascade of disease and death from lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic and possibly even copper (which drives people mad when consumed in chronically high quantities) contaminating the food supply.

Who gets to drill out all the teeth?
From a practical standpoint, the Urban Death Project could theoretically eliminate a significant portion of toxic elements from the system by drilling out the teeth of the deceased and separating teeth matter into a hazardous waste containment system to be disposed of somewhere else. (The Nazis did this too, but they were looking for gold, not mercury.)

However, even the process of drilling out these teeth -- which would be incredibly gruesome -- is also extremely toxic, exposing the workers to airborne mercury particles which can be easily inhaled and absorbed into their bodies. When they die a premature death from working as "mercury extractors," all their inhaled mercury is also added to the human compost system.

Drilling out the teeth is only one step in this process, however, and it may not be enough. As I mentioned above, lead tends to accumulate in bones. Cadmium accumulates in skin and arteries. Pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care synthetic chemicals accumulate in skin, hair, nails and organ tissue. Unless the Urban Death Project plans to skin the bodies of dead people, extract their large bones, shave off their hair and pull out all their nails -- a task that seems incredibly gruesome and blatantly undignified to the recently deceased -- they are not going to be able to avoid the accumulation of extremely toxic chemicals and heavy metals in the compost that feeds the food crops.

If you grow corn in the human body compost, in other words, you get TOXICORN laced with mercury, lead, cadmium and whatever other chemicals or metals got absorbed by the corn plant. Who knows... this might even be worse than eating GMO corn!

Truth be told, nearly all dead bodies in modern society as too toxic to recycle into food even if you wanted to. Sure, it all sounds "Greenpeacy" and holistic and aligned with "circle of life" thinking, but if you look a little closer at these bodies, you'll discover just how toxic modern humans really are in terms of total chemical burden.

And yes, I know there are some people who think you can pray over these dead bodies and transmute toxic chemicals into loving chemicals (or whatever). Sorry to burst the bubble on this myth, but such ideas are pure bunk. You can meditate all you want -- even for a lifetime -- and you'll never be able to change mercury into zinc. Or lead into gold, for that matter. To get lead out of an ecosystem, you have to use physical solutions such as plant remediation (growing plants that are especially good at latching on to certain toxic elements in soil). You can also use ion-exchange technology, similar to what I incorporated into the invention of a dietary supplement called Heavy Metals Defense (which binds and "captures" toxic heavy metals during digestion).

The Urban Death Project really is a death project after all
Thus, I propose the Urban Death Project, as much as it appears to be coming from a place of holistic intentions, is nevertheless a bona fide "death project" that will cause widespread sickness and death if carried out as currently envisioned.

This is not necessarily due to any failure in the thinking of the architect who designed the system, mind you. The project is impractical because modern-day humans are simply too toxic to turn into plant food (even if you wanted to). This Soylent Green, in other words, wouldn't be approved by the FDA for human consumption. (How's that for hard core irony in a polluted world?)

If you think farm-raised shrimp is toxic, that's nothing compared to crops grown on modern-day human compost.

How composting could become forced euthanasia
And then, of course, there's the whole realm of ethics. In China, where black market organs are readily bought and sold for profit, political prisoners such as Falun Gong members (a meditation group) are routinely arrested, imprisoned and killed for their fresh organs. Corrupt members of the government commit false arrests for the purpose of padding their own pockets with the profits of those organs as they are sold for black market transplants. (Anyone who thinks there's no such thing as a black market for organ transplants has never looked into the medical history of Steve Jobs...)

In a society where the Urban Death Project provides a substantial portion of the nutrients needed to grow food that keeps members of society well fed, it's not very difficult at all to imagine a young, hungry population invoking "Democracy!" to achieve a majority vote for the forced euthanasia of the elderly so that their bodies can be tossed into the composter. After all, today's society has already lost sight of the very concept of individual rights and human rights as protected by the Bill of Rights. The push for vaccine mandates, for example, is predicated on the frightening idea that the state owns and controls your body, and that any medical intervention desired by the brainwashed masses can be forced upon people against their will... even if it's dangerous and sometimes deadly.

With all the human depopulation talk coming out of the mouths of people like Ted Turner and Bill Gates, it's also not difficult to imagine a world where citizens are required to turn themselves over to the "recyclers" upon reaching the age of 70. Or 65. Or whenever the government decides it can no longer afford to keep sending out social security checks and Medicare reimbursements.

And that's how the Urban Death Project, despite being paved with good intentions, could very easily become the Urban MASS Death Project that's used by the government to greenwash mass murder.

What do you think about all this? Katrina Spade is into permaculture (yay!) and ecologically sound architecture. Does her Urban Death Project idea have merit? Sound off with your comments below. But remember, your government is now reading everything you post online, and politically incorrect comments will get you thrown into the urban death composter vats ahead of schedule...

Soylent Green: Company Wants You to EAT Your Favorite Celebrity

A company is aiming to take advantage of the mindless celebrity worship culture by planning to feed fanatics their favorite celebrities.

Hundreds of people are petitioning celebrities to donate tissue samples to BiteLabs.org, a company that says it will produce “artisanal salami” from celebrity tissue samples for human consumption.

“How do you connect with celebrities?” a video promo for BiteLabs asks. “TV? Over the Internet? At Concerts? BiteLabs gets you so much closer. We take celebrity cells, grow them into muscles, making robust, flavorful, healthy, eco-friendly artisanal salami. We bring you celebrity meat.”

“Here’s how it will work,” explains the Los Angeles Times. “A sample of tissue containing myosatellite cells (the type of cells that help repair and regrow damaged muscle) will be taken from a person during a biopsy. Those cells are multiplied in a lab using a medium that acts as an artificial blood to grow muscle.”

The company already has a few celebrities in mind, such as James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, Kanye West and Ellen DeGeneres, and even recipes they believe complement their personalities.

The end result, BiteLabs testifies, is a “high-quality, luxury protein, in a sustainable manner that eliminates the environmental and ethical concerns associated with traditional livestock production.”

Hungry yet? Maybe their promo vid will entice you..

While eating human muscle tissue may sound cannibalistic, BiteLabs claims its meat will be free of “animal cruelty, waste and from the environmental impacts of industrial farming,” and that it is simply fulfilling the next step in food evolution.

“In 1931, Winston Churchill predicted a future in which all the world’s meat would be grown in labs; what, he asked, was the sense in raising a whole chicken merely for the sake of its wings or breast meat?.. Today, In-Vitro meat production is close to becoming a reality..”

While BiteLabs’ idea is indeed disgusting, and possibly a well-coordinated hoax, increasingly more horrific ingredients are really being used to produce foods.

Last month, scientists in Spain found “The trick to making sausage healthier may be baby poop.”

“Bacteria from baby poop can help make delicious sausages, which could transform savory meats into health foods much like probiotic yogurts, according to new research,” reported Live Science.

And in 2011, Japanese scientists announced their success in turning human excrement into an edible meat-like texture.

“According to the latest reports, some people who actually ate the ‘turd burger’ have said it tastes like beef,” the International Business Times reported.

Or if none of the above strikes your fancy, how about a tasty cricket protein bar?

It’s evident a Brave New World of food is here, but there will always be detractors who will resist eating people and poop.

For instance, when asked whether he’d prefer celebrity salami, baby-poop sausages or a sh*t burger, Infowars editor Kurt Nimmo stoically replied, “I’ll have the carrots.”

New method for making human-based gelatin

Scientists are reporting development of a new approach for producing large quantities of human-derived gelatin that could become a substitute for some of the 300,000 tons of animal-based gelatin produced annually for gelatin-type desserts, marshmallows, candy and innumerable other products.

Their study appears in American Chemical Society's Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.

Jinchun Chen and colleagues explain that animal-based gelatin, which is made most often from the bones and skin of cows and pigs, may carry a risk of infectious diseases such as "Mad Cow" disease and could provoke immune system responses in some people. Animal-based gelatin has other draw-backs, with variability from batch to batch, for instance, creating difficulties for manufacturers. Scientists thus have sought alternatives, including development of a human-recombinant gelatin for potential use in drug capsules and other medical applications.

To get around these difficulties, the scientists developed and demonstrated a method where human gelatin genes are inserted into a strain of yeast, which can produce gelatin with controllable features. The researchers are still testing the human-yeast gelatin to see how well it compares to other gelatins in terms of its viscosity and other attributes. Chen and colleagues suggest that their method could be scaled up to produce large amounts of gelatin for commercial use.
