New Bible for Public Release, Changes Jesus 'Son of Man' to ‘the Human One’

The new edition of the Common English Translation (CET) will be released in print and made available to the public for the first time on August 1, publicist Audra Jennings has told The Christian Post.

The publisher of the new version is hoping it will make the Bible understandable and attractive to as many people as possible. To that end, the new edition of the CET has made several “bold” translation choices, including changing Jesus' “Son of Man” title to “the Human One.”

With the complete edition of the Common English Translation arriving from the printers this week and rolling into stores starting next month, associate publisher Paul Franklyn said the goal of translators was to make the Bible accessible and more appealing to readers of various backgrounds and denominations.

“There are a number of translations available for conservative churches,” Franklyn told The Tennessean. “This is trying to make a bridge between conservatives, moderates and liberals.”

On their website, the publishers compare the Common English Translation to the New International Version and the New Revised Standard Version.

For their “bold” new edition, the publishers say they gathered over 100 biblical scholars from across two dozen denominations and from various ethnic backgrounds to translate the Bible from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts into plain English. The publishers also field tested the new edition among 500 readers from more than six dozen groups.

Some other changes in the Common English Translation include swapping out “alien” or “foreigner,” used by some translations for passages like Leviticus 19:33-34; the Common English Translation applies the term “immigrant” instead.

The translation is also gender-inclusive, as the passage in Matthew 5:21-22 involving Jesus' teaching on the true meaning of murder shows. In the Common English Translation Jesus warns, “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment.”

Another translation change involves the Lord's prayer, which avoids the King James Version's “hallowed be thy name” and includes “uphold the holiness of your name” instead.

A very unique aspect of the Common English Translation also involves its use of contractions, as readers of other English Bible versions are more likely to find “it is” instead of “it's” in the text.

The new translation was produced by five denominational publishing houses and cost about $3.5 million and four years to complete.

The Common English Translation was released in digital format late last year and made available on Bible websites, but this is the first time the new Common English Translation will be available for sale in print. Publishers have so far only made it available in paperback.

In May, Fuller Theological Seminary voted to add the Common English Bible to the NRSV and the TNIV as translations that could be required for students doing biblical studies. "We wanted something that was an academically excellent translation from Greek and Hebrew, and one that reflected our strong position regarding women in leadership," Dr. Joel B. New Modern Bible Translation Proves More Popular Than Expected

The Common English Bible, the newest translation touted for its modern, easy-to-read language, is doing better than expected and is now in its third printing.

There are now 500,000 copies of the translation in print, including New Testament-only editions. The entire Bible was released in paperback just last month and is selling quickly, according to an announcement Monday. Sales have exceeded the publisher's first print-run expectations by 50 percent.

Paul Franklyn, associate publisher, says the surge in interest in the CEB is due in part to recent media coverage. The New Testament edition has been out for a year.

The CEB has been approved for use in classrooms at Fuller Theological Seminary in Southern California. It was given the green light for its gender-inclusive language and its accessible language.

Some of the changes in the new translation include replacing the term "alien" with "immigrant," updating "brother" with "brother or sister," and changing "the Son of Man" to "the Human One."

With regard to the latter change, Joel M. Hoffman, who holds a PhD in theoretical linguistics and is author of And God Said: How Translations Conceal the Bible’s Original Meaning, contends that in isolation, "the Human One" is a better translation.

Common English Bible Expands Reach, Continues to Be a 'Best Seller'


The Common English Bible is quickly expanding its appeal among believers, establishing itself on multiple websites and celebrating its second consecutive month as a best-seller.

Described as being “built on common ground,” the new translation is attracting many Christians who appreciate the text’s clear and understandable 21st century English, which was the result of collaboration between opposites (scholars working with average readers, conservatives working with liberals, men working with women, and etc.).

The CEB is expected to become one of the most used Bible translations, becoming as widespread as the NIV, Paul Franklyn, the associate publisher of the CEB, told The Christian Post.

“Our message, built on common ground, is appealing to many Christians who agree that the Bible is not a weapon but should be an instrument for spreading God’s grace to all seekers and believers,” he shared.

Translators from 24 denominations came together from evangelical to liberal traditions to create the CEB, working hard to reach a consensus on the words chosen. The Bible was written in contemporary idiom at the same reading level as the USA TODAY newspaper.

“The smoothness and naturalness of the English was improved by field testing (reading the text aloud) during the translation process in 77 reading groups,” Franklyn explained.

Thirty-four percent of people on the translation team were women, out of conviction that common ground was possible and that God’s grace was available to any person regardless of gender, age, identity or color.

Given the number of Christian leaders and congregations that are already drawn to the new Bible for its common ground and language, Franklyn predicted a promising future for the CEB.

Currently, the Common English Bible is on the January CBA Bible Translation Best Seller list after debuting in stores less than three months ago, based on actual unit sales in Christian retail stores in the United States.

The translation is also being featured on several accredited websites including BibleGateway.com, the highest ranked website in the world for Bible search activity, and Patheos.com, an international online hub for faith communities.

Additionally, more than 150 international bloggers are participating in a three-month long “Thank You-Come Again-I Promise” blog tour, where bloggers are given the opportunity to use the new translation to write about their favorite seasonal verses or stories.

The completion of the translation in 2011, which took four years in total, was featured in several newspapers and publications, becoming one of the top 10 religion stories of the year according to the 30th annual Religion Newswriters Association survey and by editors of the Associated Baptist Press.

“The reach of the CEB might become as widespread as the NIV,” Franklyn revealed to CP. “But the extent of the CEB use is of course difficult to predict.”

The new Bible was not as dependent on KJV vocabulary as the top 5 translations, the publisher stated.

“The NIV appeared in the 1970s at a time when print publishing and retail distribution, as well as character of denominational groups, were aligned very differently than the influential partners are now lined up in the digital era.”

“In addition, for more than 50 years now it is apparent that leaders in every generation will put the translation of the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible into the fresh, natural and common idioms that are spoken by God's people,” Franklyn revealed.

“While some people prefer not to change their reading habits for understandable reasons, but these continuing acts of Bible translation show that the divine word is just as relevant now as it was when the Bible first began appearing in English (through John Wycliffe) 630 years ago.”

Overall, Franklyn explained that his team was just happy to witness people sharing the Good News in the translation of their choice, whether CEB or ESV or NIV.

“We try not to imagine that the Common English Bible is a contest to make other translations obsolete,” he clarified. “If we apply the business principle of competition too literally to the distribution of the Bible, we easily slip into the same error that Jesus' disciples made when they asked Jesus who will be the greatest disciple?”

“We are pleased to hear when any person reads their preferred translation.”

As of now, many editions of the Common English Bible are available with many more planned for the near future. The two most important editions for the new translation will include the CEB Deep Blue Kid’s Bible, which will appear in August of this year, and the CEB Study Bible, which will debut in the fall of 2013.

“In general, when a new translation appears, people start reading the Bible again because the fresh language motivates passive or weary readers to take up the discipline of digesting God’s Word,” Franklyn concluded.

“Living the common ground is the next objective.”

yeah, the big lie you hear in today's "church" is that the KJV is "hard to understand". And it's from ALMOST EVERYONE - a girl I know who's father is a pastor in the mountains in NC told me the same thing.

You're right, they will give this reason, but pretty much you can tell they have no idea what they're talking about. It's as if they believe this lie b/c everyone else has been saying it.

Ultimately, we are living in an age where people don't do cross and fact checking for themselves to see if these things are either so or not so. The youth, in particular, are trained to believe everything the teacher says in the classroom, the pastor says on the pulpits, the journalists say on tv, etc, etc. One time I read a Seminary President statement saying students have no right to have debates within the classroom(ie-question anything).

We are living in some really interesting times now...

Same old thing, repeat a lie for long enough and it becomes truth. The KJB can be read by anyone you can read English. As a grade level i would say grade 3. You have to be careful with charts because they are presented as if they are fact, evolutionists love to do that alot.

I always thought this scripture pertained to Tribulation times where the Bible, any Bible, would be outlawed and thought perverse and dangerous, just like Christians, themselves, will be.

well the thing is its hard to find a true King James AV Bible. When you go to a store and they have KJB's those are not real KJB text. They have been changing the text for years. Just little changes, but enough. And any and every OTHER version is pushed instead of the KJB. You have to really question that.

Also why do you think that is only for the end times? There is a lead up to the Tribulation that goes on for years and that we are currently in. Its not lke we will just wake up one day and the Antichrist shows on TV signing a peace treaty out of no where. There is a build up first, Jesus compared this time to "birth pangs".
