With this latest flare up, one can see the potential for this to get to a point where somebody would step forward with the power to say "Enough is enough, stop fighting, this is how it's going to be". How much of it is show and sensationalism by the media? I suspect the people involved in the fighting believe it's a war, whether they are being manipulated by their superiors or not.

Breaking news: Traffic from Syria Disappears from Internet

At around 18:45 UTC OpenDNS resolvers saw a significant drop in traffic from Syria. On closer inspection it seems Syria has largely disappeared from the Internet.

The graph below shows DNS traffic from and to Syria. Although Twitter remains relatively silent, the drop in both inbound and outbound traffic from Syria is clearly visible. The small amount of outbound traffic depicted by the chart indicates our DNS servers trying to reach DNS servers in Syria.

Currently both TLD servers for Syria, ns1.tld.sy and ns2.tld.sy are unreachable.  The remaining two nameservers sy.cctld.authdns.ripe.net. and pch.anycast.tld.sy. are reachable since they are not within Syria.

The Umbrella Security Labs also reported on an Internet blackout in Syria November of 2012, where we shared details of the top 10 most failed domains during the outage.

Expect updates from our team shortly.

Syria Turning into Regional Proxy War Zone

Analysis: crumbling state turning into arena for "existential struggle" between Jordanians, Israelis and Iranians.

5/7/13
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/167797#.UYlnMGwo5Ms

Regional players are intervening more and more openly in Syria, some emboldened by the chaos created by the conflict, others desperate to prevent the fall of the regime, experts say.

The conflict between President Bashar al-Assad's government and rebel forces has divided the Middle East, with his allies -- Iran and Lebanon's Hizbullah -- lined up against Gulf states which back the uprising.

Israel has publicly refrained from backing one side or the other, but warned that the turmoil must not result in the transfer of advanced weapons to arch-foe Hizbullah.

Over the past week, the Jewish state has reportedly twice carried out air strikes against Syrian military sites, with senior Israeli sources saying they targeted Iranian weapons bound for the Shiite group.

The strikes followed an admission by Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah that the group's members are fighting in Syria.

The leader also pledged that Assad's "true friends" would not allow his regime to fall
.

"Many people are now starting to see this as a zero-sum game," Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center, told AFP.

"If you look around the region, whether it's the Jordanians, the Israelis, Hizbullah and the Iranians... this is becoming much more of an existential struggle."

Since the start of the conflict, the sectarian fault lines dividing the Sunni-led opposition from the regime, which hails from the Alawite minority, a Shiite offshoot, have made the civil war an attractive target for regional intervention.

Sunni Arab states in the Gulf have openly backed rebel forces, while Shiite Iran and its partner Hizbullah have rallied to Assad's side.

Israel has watched with concern, reluctant to lose a reliable enemy in Assad while increasingly worried both by the Salafist role in the revolt and by the involvement of Iran and Hizbullah, its biggest regional foes.

"We're in a regional proxy war in Syria, it's quite clear, particularly between the key Gulf states and the Iranians and its partners such as Hizbullah," Shaikh said.

Israel's intervention in the conflict may be more opportunistic, analysts there said.

"Israel is actually changing the equation and saying 'From now on, I won't allow what's being going on for 20 years -- the transfer of weapons to Hizbullah," Syria expert Eyal Zisser told Israel Army Radio.

"I am exploiting the weakness of Bashar who really has his hands tied and who really can't do anything to Israel, and every time that I hear that Iran is transferring weapons to Hizbullah, I won't allow it."

For Hizbullah, which relies on Damascus as a weapons supply route and key regional backer, the fall of the Assad regime would be disastrous.

Iran, which has invested heavily in the Syrian government, is equally intent on maintaining its key foothold in the Arab world.

With the stakes so high and their roles increasingly exposed, regional players have little choice but to admit their interventions and have little to lose by doing so, experts said.

"Hizbullah has already declared that it is operational and active in Qusayr" in central Syria, Hizbullah expert Amal Saad-Ghorayeb told AFP.

"The Iranians have admitted in the past that they have advisors there and yesterday we heard them say they were ready to train the Syrians... the involvement of these actors has become more open," she said.

"But I also think that it has increased."

The intervention raises the prospect of a dangerous "regionalization" of the conflict, the analysts warned.

"With all his problems, Assad does not want to start a war, but he could fire missiles at Israel," the Jewish state's former National Security Council head told Israeli radio.

"Maybe we're treading a very fine line."

Israel's air strikes also raise the specter of new violence between it and Hizbullah, which fought it in Lebanon in 2006, or a Syrian response that could swiftly escalate.

After an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday, the Syrian government warned that the air raids had made the situation in the region "more dangerous."

"I don't think Hizbullah's going to respond to this," Saad-Ghorayeb said. "What's problematic is how Syria's going to respond," she said, adding that Damascus was unlikely to respond "conventionally" but would feel forced to produce some reaction to avoid emboldening Israel.

"I think what's required now is for them (Syria) to find a way to respond in an unconventional way that wouldn't drag the region into a war."

For Shaikh, the crisis has already drawn in much of the region, and the opposing stands of the United States, which backs the uprising, and Russia, the regime's strongest ally, pose an even greater threat.

"The danger is that we may get into a global proxy war because we also have great powers... on opposing sides," he said. "Containment should not be seen as an option here, it's not a containable crisis."

Report: Russia to Sell Syria Advanced Missiles, Keep Assad Going

Israel has warned the United States that Russia plans to sell advanced weapons to Syria, a report in the Wall Street Journal said

5/9/13
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/167873#.UYvSLWwo5Ms

Israel has warned the United States that Russia plans to sell advanced weapons to Syria, a report in the Wall Street Journal Thursday said. The deal is set to take place in the coming months. Reports Thursday said that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spoke with U.S. President Barack H. Obama Wednesday night for the first time since March, sharing with him the Israeli intelligence on the matter.

Israel has obtained information that Russia plans to sell to the regime of Bashar al-Assad advanced S-300 long-range surface to air missiles. It is suspected that Syria already has older versions of the missiles. According to intelligence reports, Russia sent several S-300 batteries and spare parts in 2011, to help Assad fight the rebels who had begun attacking the regime.

In the latest deal, the report said, Syria will receive six launchers and 144 missiles, with a range of up to 300 kilometers. With the missiles, Assad will be able to hit rebel bases in the north of the country. Israeli experts quoted in the report said that Assad will be significantly strengthened if he gets the missiles.

Russia will also send several expert teams to help Syria deploy the missiles, the report said.

Russian officials did not respond to the report. A source in the Russian embassy in Washington said that Moscow generally did not comment on arms deals.

Assuming that is true, then this is already a "proxy war", as the US is supplying the "rebels" against Assad and the Syrian government. But who knows which side is really the "bad guy", because you cannot trust the media to tell it straight.

A parched Syria turned to war, scholar says, and Egypt may be next

Prof. Arnon Sofer sets out the link between drought, Assad’s civil war, and the wider strains in the Middle East; Jordan and Gaza are also in deep trouble, he warns

5/9/13

http://www.timesofisrael.com/lack-of-water-sparked-syrias-conflict-and-it-will-make-egypt-more-militant-too/

Some look at the upheaval in Syria through a religious lens. The Sunni and Shia factions, battling for supremacy in the Middle East, have locked horns in the heart of the Levant, where the Shia-affiliated Alawite sect has ruled a majority Sunni nation for decades.

Some see it through a social prism. As they did in Tunis with Muhammad Bouazizi — an honest man who couldn’t make an honest living in this corruption-ridden part of the world — the social protests that sparked the war in Syria started in the poor and disenfranchised parts of the country.

And others look at the eroding boundaries of state in Syria and other parts of the Middle East as a direct result of the sins of Western hubris and Colonialism.

Professor Arnon Sofer has no qualms with any of these claims and interpretations. But the upheaval in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East, he says, cannot be fully understood without also taking two environmental truths into account: soaring birthrates and dwindling water supply.

Over the past 60 years, the population in the Middle East has twice doubled itself, said Sofer, the head of the Chaikin geo-strategy group and a longtime lecturer at the IDF’s top defense college, where today he heads the National Defense College Research Center. “There is no example of this anywhere else on earth,” he said of the population increase. Couple that with Syria’s water scarcity, he said, “and as a geographer it was clear to me that a conflict would erupt.”

For first time since Syrian uprising, 2 mortars hit Mt. Hermon
5/15/13

Area closed to hikers; no injuries or damage reported; Israel lodges complaint with UNDOF peacekeeping force

For the first time since the outbreak of the Syrian uprising, two mortar shells exploded in the Mount Hermon area Wednesday morning.

There were no reported injuries or casualties. The area in the Hermon, the mountain range that straddles the Lebanese-Syrian border and the Golan Heights, was promptly closed to hikers on the Shavuot holiday.

The shells that landed inside Israeli territory were reportedly a result of fighting between Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime and the rebels, not a planned attack on Israel.

Israel lodged a complaint with UNDOF, the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, which oversees the buffer zone between Syria and Israel established by the Security Council in the wake of the Yom Kippur War. The mandate of UNDOF, which enforces the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, has been renewed every half-year since 1974.

Mortar shells fired from within Syria have landed in the Golan Heights several times in previous months, and Israel has often returned fire.

Last Monday, two shells reached the Israeli Golan Heights, but no injuries or damage were reported. They landed near the town of Ramat Magshimim. The next day, another mortar hit the southern Golan Heights as a result of the spillover from fighting in Syria, again without casualties or harm caused during the incident.

Before the start of the Syrian civil war, the northern Israeli territory had been relatively quiet for decades.

Syria suffers communications blackout

BEIRUT - Internet connections between Syria and the rest of the world were down, a US web tracking firm said on Wednesday, and phone lines into Damascus from other countries were not working.

"Syrian Internet offline again 07:01 UTC / 10:00 am local," Renesys said on its Twitter account.

This is the sixth communications blackout of the two-year-old uprising against President Bashar Assad and web tracking firms say the government is probably responsible. Authorities blamed a blackout last week on a malfunctioning optic cable.

Israel Hints: We'll Strike Syria Again

Senior official tells NYT: "If Assad attacks Israel, he will risk forfeiting his regime, for Israel will retaliate."

5/15/13

A senior Israeli official signaled on Wednesday that Israel was considering further military strikes on Syria to stop the transfer of advanced weapons to Islamist Hizbullah – and warned President Bashar Assad against any kind of retaliation against the Jewish state.

The New York Times quoted the Israeli official who said, “Israel is determined to continue to prevent the transfer of advanced weapons to Hizbullah. The transfer of such weapons to Hizbullah will destabilize and endanger the entire region.”

“If Syrian President Assad reacts by attacking Israel, or tries to strike Israel through his terrorist proxies,” the official said, “he will risk forfeiting his regime, for Israel will retaliate.”

The Times  said the Israeli official contacted it on Wednesday and that he "has been briefed by high-level officials on the Syria situation in the past two days," but that he declined to be identified, citing the need to protect internal Israeli deliberations.

The newspaper estimated that Israel "could be trying to restrain Syria’s behavior without undertaking further military action, or alerting other countries to another strike."

Report: Syria already has Russian S-300 missile system

By ARIEL BEN SOLOMON
 14/05/2013

A Syrian military source told the London-based Arab daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi that Syria has received 200 launchers of the advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missile system from Russia. The delivery supposedly took place after the outbreak of the Syrian conflict and the Syrian experts have finished their training and can operate the system independently without the need to be managed by Russian experts.

This report contradicts other sources that state that Russia has not yet delivered the advanced anti-aircraft system to Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu visited Russia on Tuesday and was expected to try to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin from carrying out the deal.

Netanyahu and Putin were meeting in the Russian city of Sochi.

Russia sends at least 12 warships to Syria

Deployment presumably a warning to Israeli and Western officials regarding military intervention against Assad

5/17/13

In a move considered aggressive by US and European officials, Russia has sent at least 12 warships to patrol waters near its naval base in Tartous, Syria.

The deployment appears to be a warning to Israeli and Western officials against military intervention in Syria’s bloody civil war, which has now claimed the lives of over 80,000 people.

Russia’s increased presence in the region — which began raising eyebrows in the US three months ago — represents one of its largest sustained naval deployments since the Cold War, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

“It’s a show of force. It’s muscle flexing,” a top US official told the Journal.

Russian news sources reported earlier Thursday that five warships had entered the Mediterranean Sea to bolster the country’s new regional task force. The vessels were scheduled to dock in Limassol, Cyprus.

In March, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that the naval task force was needed in order to protect Russian interests in the region.

Also Thursday, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shrugged off Israeli pleas not to sell sophisticated S-300 air defense systems to Bashar Assad’s regime, saying Moscow would fulfill its contract with Damascus. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly warned Russian President Vladimir Putin, in emergency talks on Tuesday, that the sale could push the region toward war.

Personally, I'm not sure if I buy that the Gog/Magog war in Ezekiel 38-39 is part of some end times war in the ME before the great tribulation(or during it), but nonetheless just from these current events headlines alone, I might have to study the scriptures on this more.

One thing's for sure, and I was talking with my dad about this recently - Russia has a lot of their own financial interests in these ME countries(and in other places of the world as well), and it's ONLY financial interests, which coincidentally happens to go against other Western countries concerning national security in these conflicts when all is said and done. Otherwise, I don't think Russia gives 2 licks about the national security interests of anyone else.

Report: 5 Russian warships reached Mediterranean Sea
5/16/13
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4380591,00.html

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that five Russian warships crossed the Suez Canal on Wednesday and entered the Mediterranean Sea. Russian Navy spokesperson says that this is the first time in decades that Pacific Ocean Russian warships sail in the area.

According to him, the Russian warships are making their way to Cyprus. The Russian defense minister said: "The Russian Defense Ministry started setting up a special force of warships in the Mediterranean in order to protect Russia's interests in the region." (Roi Kais)

Russian warship fleet docks in Israeli port
http://www.theway.co.uk/feature.php?id=9197&this=Russian_warship_fleet_docks_in_Israeli_port

Russia made history by sending their first warship, since 1948, which docked at the port city of Haifa earlier this month. The "Azov" of Russian's Black Sea Fleet came to Israel at the request of the Association of Russian War Veterans to help celebrate the anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany.
Jewish veterans of the Red Army who later immigrated to Israel were invited to participate in a ceremony aboard the massive ship.

However, there was another even more important, even historical, reason for the visit - with the looming collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, Russia is on the lookout for new Middle East alliances.

Russia has long maintained a large naval base in Tartus, the second largest port city in Syria. But with Syria's ongoing civil war likely to end in that country descending into factional warfare and chaos, Russia is concerned for its interests in the region.

Recent reports are that Moscow is searching for a new Mediterranean seaport to maintain strategic balance in the region. Russian delegations have reportedly examined Egypt and Algeria.

Russian Pacific Fleet Warships to Enter Mediterranean

VLADIVOSTOK, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - A group of warships from Russia’s Pacific Fleet is about to deploy to the Mediterranean Sea for the first time in decades, fleet spokesman Roman Martov said on Monday.

The group has entered the Red Sea and is preparing to transit the Suez Canal, and should reach the Mediterranean by mid-May, he said.

The group, including the destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, the amphibious warfare ships Peresvet and Admiral Nevelsky, the tanker Pechenga and the salvage/rescue tug Fotiy Krylov left the port of Vladivostok on March 19 to join Russia’s Mediterranean task force.

Syrian regime's position strengthens as world pushes for diplomatic solution

If there’s one thing you can say about Bashar al-Assad, it’s that he has staying power.

For more than two years, the Syrian president has defied predictions that his downfall is imminent. His regime has certainly suffered many setbacks during the brutal civil war that shows no signs of ending, but it's clear right now that Assad and his followers have been gaining momentum.

The most recent example came just a few days ago, when Syrian forces took control of a town near the highway that links Damascus to neighboring Jordan. After battles with the opposition, government troops reopened the roadway near Khirbet Ghazaleh.

Re-establishing control means Syrian soldiers are in a better position now to block the transfer of arms from Jordan, bound for opposition fighters.

All across Syria, Assad’s forces have launched intense offensives in recent weeks, successfully pushing the rebels back from hard-won positions. There has been fierce fighting in the northern city of Raqqa, the first provincial capital to fall to opposition hands.

Assad himself has demonstrated more confidence of late, making several public appearances in an effort to show he is not holed-up in his well-guarded presidential palaces in Damascus.

“We are not afraid,” he told his supporters outside a power plant in the capital at the beginning of May. “They want us to live underground, but we will remain above it.”

Syria, Israel exchange fire on Golan Heights
5/21/13
http://news.yahoo.com/syria-israel-exchange-fire-golan-heights-160853196.html

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria said its troops destroyed an Israeli vehicle that crossed into its territory from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday and warned that any attempt to violate its sovereignty would meet "immediate and firm retaliation".

Israel said the incident took place on its side of the Golan ceasefire line, that the vehicle was damaged but not destroyed, none of its soldiers were hurt and they returned fire.

The clash highlighted the potential for renewed conflict along a frontline that has become increasingly fraught after nearly four decades of calm overseen by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his father.

It also followed Israeli airstrikes near Damascus against suspected missile stockpiles two weeks ago, after which Syria threatened to retaliate.

Assad is battling a two-year-old uprising in which rebel forces, including radical Islamists, have taken swathes of rural territory and attacked army posts near the Golan frontier.

There are frequent reports of cross-border gunfire from Syria during clashes between army and rebel forces but Tuesday's incident was the first time since the start of the crisis that Syria's armed forces said they targeted Israel's military.

"Our noble armed forces destroyed an Israeli vehicle ... which entered from the occupied territories and crossed the ceasefire line," Syria's military leadership said in a statement broadcast on state media. The incident occurred at 1:10 am (2210 GMT, Monday), it said.

Shortly afterwards, Israeli forces fired two rockets towards a Syrian position, without causing any casualties, Syria said.

The Israeli military's chief of staff, Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz, said the Israeli army vehicle had been patrolling on the Israeli side of a border fence when it came under repeated fire.

"They fire on it once. They fire on it twice. They fire on it a third time, from a clear Syrian position," he said in a speech. "One time, okay. Two times, okay. Three times, too many. The position was destroyed."

Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said: "Our policy on Syria is clear: We are not intervening there, of course, in the civil war ... But as for the situation in the Golan Heights, we are not allowing and we will not permit a spillover of fire into our territory."

AGGRESSION

Tension in the Golan Heights region has been fuelled by the fighting on the Syrian side and several recent abductions by rebel fighters of U.N. peacekeepers, who have monitored a narrow zone of separation between Syrian and Israeli troops since 1974.

The abductions led the Philippines government to say it was considering withdrawing its troops from the UNDOF observer mission. Austria, the other main troop contributor, is concerned that French and British calls to drop an EU arms embargo on Syrian rebels would render its continued presence untenable.

Adding to the sense of alert, the militant Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said two weeks ago it was forming combat units to try to recapture the Golan, after Assad and Lebanon's Hezbollah said they would support such operations.

The announcement followed Israel's air strikes near Damascus against suspected missiles stocks destined for Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006.

Syria's Foreign Ministry sent a written complaint to the United Nations on Tuesday, saying Israel's actions violated the United Nations charter and a 1974 military disengagement agreement between the two foes.

Syria's military command said the incident showed that Israel was supporting the anti-Assad rebels and aimed "to raise their morale which collapsed after the tough blows struck by our noble armed forces ... especially in Qusair."

Syria's army, backed by Hezbollah, has launched an offensive to capture the central town of Qusair, which has been in rebel hands for most of the two-year uprising which has now killed more than 80,000 people, according to the United Nations.

"The blatant Zionist aggression confirms that any violation, or attempted violation of the country's sovereignty will be met with immediate and firm retaliation," the Syrian army said.

THAT right there is a classic example of the "eye for an eye" attitude between those cousins. You got the absurd claims of "victory" by some Arab against the "Zionists", and you got the typical nonchalant response, "They hit, we hit back, destroyed their stuff, no problem". I can hear Billy Chrystal talking in his Jewish accent saying it!  Roll Eyes

Syrian regime OKs peace talks amid skepticism

BEIRUT (AP) — Syria's government has agreed to attend a U.S.-Russian-brokered peace conference, according to Moscow. While this development might seem at first glance to be a step toward ending the civil war, strong skepticism persists on both sides.

Doubting that Damascus is serious and may be stalling while government forces make battlefield gains, the Syrian opposition has demanded guarantees that President Bashar Assad's departure top the agenda; Russia questioned whether the fragmented opposition is capable of negotiating with one voice.

The war has killed more than 70,000 people, and both sides are firmly entrenched in their positions and appear unwilling to compromise to stop the carnage and chaos engulfing the country.

"We are not willing to enter a tunnel with no guarantees of a light at the end of that tunnel," said Muhieddine Lathkani, a London-based Syrian opposition figure. "There's still a lot of fogginess surrounding the talks and we are waiting for some answers," he said in a telephone interview.

Rockets hit south Beirut after Hezbollah vows Syria victory
5/26/13

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two rockets hit a Shi'ite Muslim district of Beirut on Sunday, driving home the risk of spillover from Syria's civil war, after the head of Lebanese Shi'ite movement Hezbollah said it would keep fighting on the Syrian government's side until victory.

It was the first attack to apparently target Hezbollah's stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital since the outbreak of the two-year conflict in neighboring Syria, which has sharply heightened Lebanon's own sectarian tensions.

The United States and Russia have proposed an international peace conference to douse a civil war that has killed more than 80,000 people, driven 1.5 million Syrians as refugees abroad and raised the specter of sectarian bloodshed in the wider region.

Syria's government will "in principle" attend the talks tentatively set for June in Geneva and believes it will be an opportunity to resolve the crisis, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said during a visit to Baghdad on Sunday.

McCain sneaks across Turkey-Syria border, meets with rebels

Updated 6:30 p.m. ET

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a proponent of U.S. military action in Syria - and a vocal opponent of President Obama's Syrian policy - sneaked across the Syrian border and met with rebels there, CBS News has learned.

The trip was in the works "for weeks, if not months," Mouaz Mustafa, the executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force who was with McCain all day, told CBS News' Clarissa Ward. "It's something the senator has wanted to do for quite some time because he's pro-active on the subject of the U.S. being more directly involved in Syria and helping to create the necessary changes on the ground to end the conflict."

While on a trip to Turkey, McCain met with the leader of the Syrian rebels, Gen. Salem Idris, who accompanied the senator across the border at Bab Salameh and facilitated a series of meetings with assembled leaders of the Free Syrian Army.

Mustafa told CBS News' Ward that McCain went to two meetings in Gazantiep, Turkey - near the Syrian border - first and met with a dozen different commanders from all over Syria.

McCain then crossed Bab Salameh and met with a smaller gathering of brigade commanders near the border, Mustafa said.  Idris attended all three meetings. McCain, who was inside Syria for roughly an hour, had two personal security guards with him.

McCain and one commander discussed Hezbollah's increasing role in Syrian fighting and also the issue of extremism, when McCain asked commanders how to best combat extremism. The commanders agreed that the best way was for them to be armed under the command of Idris.

According to Mustafa, McCain said that the trip had been very important and that there was no substitute for meeting people and sitting down face to face. He said that more policymakers should make the trip inside and do the same.

McCain's visit was first reported by The Daily Beast.

The Daily Beast reports that during the meetings, rebel leaders called on the U.S. to increase its support to the Syrian opposition and provide them with heavy weapons, a no-fly zone, and airstrikes on the Syrian regime and Hezbollah forces.

"The visit of Senator McCain to Syria is very important and very useful especially at this time," Idris told the Daily Beast. "We need American help to have change on the ground; we are now in a very critical situation."

McCain's visit comes the same day the European Union announced it is lifting an arms embargo to Syria. It would allow member countries to send weapons if they want to, but EU officials said no decision has been made to go ahead and do so.

The Obama administration is still mulling its own next steps in Syria; to date, President Obama has only committed non-lethal aid since the Syrian conflict began two years ago, despite lawmakers' calls for more forceful action from the U.S. as the civil war there intensifies and threatens neighboring countries.

With the increased involvement of Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon and Iran and the potential spillover into bordering nations, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard Myers on Monday called the civil war in Syria a "regional war."

"It ties Iran to the conflict ... [and], Hezbollah [is] putting its 'umph' behind the regime. It is a regional conflict already," Myers, a CBS News senior military security analyst, said on "CBS This Morning."

He added that he has heard "stories about Iraqi fighters going to fight there as well," expanding the scope of the war. "If the Assad regime comes under more pressure, that certainly could spill over into Lebanon, perhaps into Jordan," he warned.

Myers said it is unlikely the rebel forces can advance without arms provided by the U.S. or a coalition of Western governments.

"With Hezbollah throwing in so strongly on the side of the Assad regime, the rebels are going to be disadvantaged here and probably can't make much more progress," Myers explained.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week passed a bill that would approve sending weapons to moderate rebels forces. The committee's chairman, Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., stressed that "now is the time" to act to tip the balance toward resistance fighters. Myers said such a move "may be exactly the right thing."

Myers encouraged careful "calculation of that balance between risk and reward" of providing weaponry, noting that often, "you don't know ultimately where those arms wind up."

The Syrian government has committed to taking part in peace talks in Geneva next month, according to a statement from its foreign minister on Sunday. While Myers said it is unlikely that real progress will be made in Geneva given that all of the governments in attendance, except Russia, have called for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, he allowed that the talks could "be a pretty good thing" if they dampen the fighting.

"McCain's trip may help to strengthen, rather than weaken, the Obama administration's interest in working with Russia on the U.N. led-peace talks scheduled for mid-June," said CBS News Foreign Affairs Analyst Pamela Falk, who is based at the United Nations.

"By trying to engage the rebels, in particular the Free Syrian Army, McCain may be showing American support that the administration feels it cannot, and help bring the opposition to the table," Falk said.

Israel threatens the Bear.Israeli defense chief indicates if Russia ships advanced missiles to Syria, they could be hit

JERUSALEM — Israel’s defense chief said Tuesday a Russian plan to supply sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Syria was a “threat” and signaled that Israel is prepared to use force to stop the delivery.

The warning by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon ratcheted up tensions with Moscow over the planned sale of S-300 air-defense missiles to Syria. Earlier in the day, a top Russian official said his government remained committed to the deal.

Israel has been lobbying Moscow to halt the sale, fearing the missiles would upset the balance of power in the region and could slip into the hands of hostile groups, including the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, a close ally of the Syrian regime.

Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Syria in recent months that are believed to have destroyed weapons shipments bound for Hezbollah. Israel has not confirmed carrying out the attacks.

The delivery of the Russian missiles to Syria could limit the Israeli air force’s ability to act. It is not clear whether Israeli warplanes entered Syrian airspace in these attacks.

Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to Russia to discuss the Syrian situation with President Vladimir Putin. The sides have said little about the talks, but the S-300s were believed to have been on the agenda more

Russia-US Brinkmanship Clashes with Israel’s Security

Russia is aggressively squaring off with an indecisive and rather meek West about Syria, and in the process, is also threatening to undermine Israeli efforts to ensure that Iran and Syria do not ship strategic weapons to Hizballah.

The Syrian civil war has become a dangerous and complex battle of multiple actors and their proxies: Sunni versus Shi’ite, Iran versus the Gulf states, al Qaeda versus Hizballah, and on a global scale, the United States versus Russia.

Moscow is trying to deter a potential U.S. or NATO-led initiative to set up a no-fly zone over areas of Syria, and is seeking to stop Western-led air strikes against chemical weapons sites.

Russia also seems concerned that recent air strikes in Damascus targeting Hizballah-bound guided Iranian missiles — strikes attributed by the foreign media to Israel — will pave the way to such an intervention.

Israel has no interest in getting involved in the Syrian civil war. Rather, it is looking out for the safety of millions of citizens, who already live in the shadow of some 80,000 Hizballah rockets, and would be threatened further by the transfer of precise, powerful missiles to Hizballah in Lebanon.

In recent days, Russia unleashed a flurry of moves to establish its support of Syria.

The Russian moves include: Declaring that it will proceed with deliveries of the advanced S-300 air defense system to Assad, mobilizing war ships to the eastern Mediterranean, and selling sophisticated surface-to-sea Yakhont missiles to Assad.

Moscow’s recent maneuvers might be more bluster than real — the S-300 has yet to be delivered, and Russia was in 2010 talked out of selling the formidable air defense system to Iran.

The threat, however, was serious enough for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make an unscheduled trip last week to Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin. The two later held a press conference, repeating their public positions, but it is doubtful that those statements were a complete reflection of their private exchange.

Israel is opposed to Assad receiving the S-300 missile for several reasons: With its sophisticated radars and range of 200 kilometers, the S-300 can hamper Israel Air Force aircraft seeking to monitor Hezbollah in Lebanon. The system can also disrupt future Israeli efforts to intercept the transit of Iranian weapons to Hizbollah through Syria. Finally, Assad can choose to smuggle S-300 batteries to Hizbollah or Iran.

Should the S-300 fall into Iranian hands, the future potential mission of launching a military strike on Iran’s developing nuclear program would be more even more complex than it already is. Knowing that the S-300 was in Hizballah’s hands, and could target Israeli aircraft sent to stop it, would only boost the Shi’ite terror organization’s confidence to launch cross-border attacks on Israel. For these reasons, Jerusalem will find Russia’s delivery of such a system to Syria to be an intolerable development; it is safe to assume that Israel will act to prevent this from happening.

Similarly, the Russian Yakhont missiles already delivered to Syria threaten Israel Navy ships carrying out vital missions in the Mediterranean.

Behind closed-doors, intense diplomacy — including the sudden visit by CIA Director John Brennan to Israel — is underway to try and contain these developments, and prevent them from triggering further regional security deterioration.

And that is just serving to stoke the fire, not put it out. Syria has a stone-cold thug as a dictator, and Russian could care less, so long as they get their cash. Is this more of an attempt to make Israel look the aggressor? Who knows. Hard to say what is really going on in reality. All we have is so-called "news reports".

Russia Ready For War, Orders Thousands Of Troops To Border

As has been expected since President Putin on 17 May ordered Russian military forces to “immediately move” from Local War to Regional War operational status and to be “fully prepared” to expand to Large-Scale War should either the US or EU enter into the Syrian Civil War, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is reporting today that thousands of Russian troops have been deployed in “full war mode” and that Israel is now a “major likely target” too.

According to this report, the “surprise alert exercise” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered last Thursday (24 May) for the Southern Military District involving four regiments of S-300 air defense systems troops combining 8,700 personnel, 185 warplanes and 240 armored vehicles are now positioned to enter into the Syrian War Zone“within hours” to begin offensive and defensive operations.

Even worse, this report continues, Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) troops have likewise been ordered into the Syrian War Zone, including the much feared Zaslon Special Forces units, in order to prepare for the widening of this conflict into what could turn into World War III.

According to all global military experts, this report says, Russia’s Zaslon Special Forces are “so shadowy they make ninjas look like amateurs” and their introduction into this conflict has shifted the balance of power to the point where the European Union (EU) lifted their long standing arms embargo for the radical Islamic rebels (who just hours ago pleaded with the West for immediate weapons shipments) and US President Obama ordered his military commanders to quickly give him a no-fly plan for Syria.

Even though Russia slammed the EU’s plan to arm these Islamic rebels, it also stated that it will not cancel plans to deliver its advanced S-300 air-defence system to Syria despite Western opposition, thus enraging Israel which earlier today threatened an attack on Russian forces attempting to move them into the conflict zone.

To how truly grim the situation has become for the Sunni-Western backed Islamic rebels attempting to overthrow the Assad regime was noted earlier today by a senior Israeli officer interviewed by the Debka File Intelligence News Service who put all these forebodings into words when he said: “A military and strategic catastrophe for the West and Israel is in full flight in Syria, and no one in Washington or Jerusalem is lifting a finger. Israel’s government and military heads never imagined that the Syrian war would take this turn. But we had better wake up at this eleventh hour – before it is too late.”

As we had previously reported about this conflict, the true intentions of this war are being kept from the Western peoples who mistakenly believe it is about “freedom and democracy,” but is, instead, a strategic plan to capture Syria, destroy its Shiite leadership, and then use its territory to build a massive natural gas pipeline from the Gulf States to the EU thus destroying Russia’s stranglehold on European energy supplies.

Qatar, which has the world’s biggest gasfield, has been working since 2009 to build their proposed pipeline through Syria to Turkey and has, in fact, turned the Syrian War into its own conflict, and as we can, in part, read as reported by the Financial Times News Service:

“In the shell-blasted areas of rebel-held Syria, few appear to be aware of the vast sums that Qatar has contributed – estimated by rebel and diplomatic sources to be about $1bn, but put by people close to the Qatar government at as much as $3bn.

However, a perception is taking root among growing numbers of Syrians that Qatar is using its financial muscle to develop networks of loyalty among rebels and set the stage for influence in a post-Assad era. “Qatar has a lot of money and buys everything with money, and it can put its fingerprints on it,” says a rebel officer from the northern province of Idlib interviewed by the FT.”

Also being kept from the Western peoples about this conflict are Russia’s true intentions and aims, and which were recently articulated by Fiona Hill who is senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and who said:

“…this is a prism that [Putin] brought to looking at most conflicts like the conflict in Syria that threaten the sanctity of a state. Mr. Putin actually came in to the presidency, if you can recall, back in ’99-2000 in Russia, just as the second war in Chechnya was starting off. And he saw that as his biggest challenge of keeping the Russian state together, so it didn’t fall down the same path as the Soviet Union into collapse. And Putin was really brutal in pursuing the war in Chechnya. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the whole course of the conflict, including many civilians.

The capital city of Grozny in Chechnya was reduced completely to rubble, and Putin thought this was worthwhile because it kept the state together. And over the course of the conflict in Chechnya it morphed in the same way that we’ve actually seen in the war in Syria. It went from a conflict that was mostly focused on political secession from, Chechnya from the Russian Federation, and over time, really took on more of an extremist element, more of Sunni extremist groups who moved in to exploit the conflict and also many people who came from outside, including from Syria, to fight in Chechnya.

And Putin is now pretty much concerned that we’re going to see a repetition, the collapse of the state in Syria, knock-on effect for conflicts at home for him as well as more broadly across the whole of the Middle East. And yet again, another collapse of the state, that is something that he would like to see avoided at all costs.

Related -Israel warns of action over Russian plan to give missiles to Syria’s Assad Full story here.

related-Obama Asks Pentagon for Syria No-Fly Zone Plan

…these all add to Mr. Putin’s interest in Syria itself, but his overwhelming fear is of the collapse of the state. In addition, in fact, to the two elements that you’ve mentioned in terms of weapon sales and also access to this naval facility at Tartus, there’s also a quite sizeable Russian population, 30,000 people roughly, people who are married to Syrians. There’s also a Russian Orthodox Church interest in the Christian communities inside of Syria. And also, Assad did help Putin in the case of Chechnya.

He prevented a number of groups who were supporting the Chechens, including from a broader ethnic group in Syria that originated in the Russian North Caucasus from collecting money and sending recruits there. But overall, the biggest concern for Putin, having seen what happened in Libya with the fall of Gadhafi and the chaos that’s originated there, as he looks across the rest of the Middle East, he looks at Iraq, he looks at the prospects of Afghanistan after the U.S. withdrawal, he looks at what’s happening in Egypt and across North Africa now, Putin thinks this is just going to be yet another state collapse that’s going to have very negative knock-on effects for Russia, that has also, from his point of view, been battling with extremism now for several decades.

…it seems that their biggest concern is of the chemical weapons falling into the hands of the opposition, not that they would be actually used by Assad himself. Of course at this particular point, given what seems to be the inevitable collapse of the state structures, this has ratcheted to the top of our agenda, and I think we should be really pushing the Russians on what then they determine to do if there is evidence – there’s already been speculation about the use of chemical weapons, but if there is evidence there that chemical weapons have been used by either side.”

As Russia has moved its naval fleets into the Mediterranean to warn the West and Israel not to intervene in Syria’s bloody civil war, and as it prepares to send its most advanced S-300 missiles to protect the Assad regime from “hotheads” intent on intervention, there appears to be no letup in Western capitols as the push for all-out war from these bankster elites continues unabated

Assad says Syria received Russian missile shipment: Lebanese media

Syria has received the first shipment of a sophisticated air defense system from Russia, President Bashar al-Assad was quoted as saying, sending a signal of military strength days before an EU arms embargo on the country lapses.

Russia had promised delivery of the S-300 missile system to the Syrian government despite Western objections, saying the move would help stabilize the regional balance at a time of insurgency in Syria waged by Western-backed rebels.

Words of War Continue: First S-300s Arrive in Syria. Israel: 'Will Act Before They Become Operational'

Israel's National Security Adviser Yaakov Amidror sketched out what Jerusalem's "red line" is vis-à-vis the S-300 missile systems Russia intends to send to Syria before the 27 European Union ambassadors in Israel.
Two diplomats who were in the room during the briefing last Thursday, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was a closed event, said that Amidror stressed Israel will act "to prevent the S-300 missiles from becoming operational" on Syrian soil. This message was also conveyed by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon when he said on Tuesday that if the missiles reach Syria "Israel will know what to do.

Amidror's briefing, the diplomats said, made it clear that Israel estimates that sooner or later Russia will provide Syria with the missile systems and for reasons unrelated to Israel - namely Russian rivalry with the U.S., Britain and France on the Syrian issue. "We understood from Amidror that the Israeli government thinks the missile transfer cannot be prevented, therefore it will act against them after the transfer but before they become operational," one of the diplomats said.

What's Going On In Damascus?

The city of Damascus is mentioned 60 times in the Bible from Genesis 14:15 to Acts 22:10. Abraham's chief servant, Eliazer, was from Damascus and Paul spent his first days as a Christian there. According to Flavius Josephus, Damascus was founded by Uz, the son of Aram who was the patriarch of the Aramean people. Aram was the 5th son of Shem, and Uz was the first son of Aram. (According to Job 1:1, Job was from the land of Uz.)

Throughout its history Damascus has been conquered many times. Most notably by the Israelites (1000 BC), the Assyrians (732 BC), the Babylonians (606 BC), the Persians (530 BC), the Greeks (330 BC), the Nabateans (85 BC), the Romans (63 BC), the Byzantines (634 AD), the Mamelukes (1250 AD) and the Ottoman Turks (1516 AD). But the city itself has always survived and is now claimed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.

Several of these conquests are referred to in the Bible. 2 Samuel 8:6-7 describes David and the Israelites. Parts of Isaiah 17 involve the Assyrians, Jeremiah 49:23-27 is about the Babylonian conquest and Zechariah 9:1-2 was fulfilled by Alexander the Great.

 An Oracle Against Damascus

Probably the best known prophecy about Damascus is Isaiah 17, called An Oracle Against Damascus. Its 14 verses go back and forth between the Assyrian conquest in the 8th Century BC and a battle that hasn't taken place yet. One reason we know this is because Isaiah 17:1 says, "See Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins." It speaks of a battle that will mark the end of Damascus, something scholars agree has not happened yet.

Other verses in Isaiah 17 confirm a future fulfillment of this destruction. Specifically, verse 7 tells us that after the destruction of Damascus men will look to their maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel. And verse 9 tells of their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, becoming like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation. In the 8th century BC no one turned back to God and it was the Israelites who were forced to leave.

Currently there are three wars going on in Syria, any one of which could lead to the fulfillment of Isaiah 17. The obvious one is the civil war that's been going on for the last two years. As many as 80,000 have died in this war to oust current President Assad from power and end his family's control over the country.

But there's also a secondary war that's becoming more critical, and that's an effort underway by Iran and Hizbollah to widen the Syrian conflict into Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel. All parties involved believe this effort could explode into a regional war at any time. If so it could be the fulfillment of Isaiah 17 as well as Psalm 83, which many see as the prophecy of a war that pits all of Israel's next door neighbors against Israel, and from which Israel will emerge victorious. Just this week, Hizbollah officials confirmed that Syria is serious about expanding the war onto the Golan Heights, territory Israel regained from Syria in 1973.

The War No One's Watching

The third war is a little known one that could very well be the single deciding factor as to whether the civil war will escalate into the fulfillment of prophecy. This war is between two men, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama. According to informed Middle East sources, each man has a vision for how the Syrian civil war should end.

Obama wants Assad gone and Putin wants him to stay. They not only can't agree on how to proceed, but each one is also trying to torpedo the other one's chances of succeeding.  These sources say it's the inability of these two men to agree that is standing in the way of a resolution to the crisis and as long as their disagreement continues, the probability of the war spilling over the borders into neighboring countries becomes ever more likely to happen.

Most of the news sources I read have concluded that Obama is outclassed in this disagreement and that sooner or later Putin will have his way. He's already won a couple of big battles. Refusing to keep Iran in check and refusing to withhold the sale of advanced anti-aircraft batteries to Syria are two of the most obvious. The first has given Assad powerful assistance on the ground and the second will give him protection from aerial attack by Israel. In both cases, Obama stood by and let this happen.

Bible prophecy might favor Putin in this case. According to Ezekiel 38-39 Russia will be a major participant in that battle, and having a strong position in the Middle East would be an important advantage. Remember, when the Moslem coalition attacks, it will be from the North (Ezekiel 38:15). That could mean they'll come from Syria over the Golan Heights. I'm not saying we're seeing a run up to Ezekiel 38, but we all know it's coming and if Russia already has a presence in Syria, they would have an advantage in mounting what scholars believe will be a surprise attack.

In the mean time, the Russian / Iranian support has strengthened and emboldened Assad. So much so that he was willing to risk using chemical weapons against the rebel forces. Obama had previously said this would not be tolerated, but so far, even after being confronted with clear evidence, he denied it has happened.  In Syria this has been interpreted to mean that limited use of chemical weapons will be tolerated.

Israeli leaders have been more resolute. After all, it's their country that's being directly threatened by this. When they detected the movement of prohibited weaponry into Lebanon for Hizbollah's use against them, they attacked and destroyed it.  Again, Obama stood by while Putin authorized the delivery of advanced anti-aircraft defenses to Syria. Its purpose is to prevent further preemptive attacks from Israel by denying them air superiority.

Informed sources are beginning to see the hand writing on the wall. As Israel is progressively denied the use of small steps to preempt the threat from their sworn enemies, their only recourse will be to take big ones. When that happens, one leading Israeli correspondent has said Obama will stand right behind Assad in the line of people to blame.

Are We There Yet?

We've come close to the fulfillment of Isaiah 17 before. Each time cooler heads have prevailed and the destruction of Damascus has been postponed. I say postponed because Isaiah's prophecy will be fulfilled.  We have God's promise on that. He said,

"I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times what is still to come. What I have said, that will I bring about. What I have planned, that will I do" (Isaiah 46:10-11).

Various reports confirm a conviction among Israel's military and political leaders that war with Syria is coming. (Some say it could be a long one, while others hint that it will more likely be very short.)  There also appears to be a consensus among the Jewish people that they must win and win decisively.

If it's God's timing, this will be the fulfillment of Isaiah 17, and perhaps Psalm 83 as well. If it's not, we'll be drawn back from the brink once again to catch our breath and wait for the next run-up. Chances are it won't be long in coming.

You can almost hear the footsteps of the Messiah.
