The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. Don't remember starting this thread!  Huh

I posted that in response to the Syria/Russia connection, to point out that things may well change once the election has settled, seeing Iran has major influence in Syria.

Did somebody think I posted in the wrong place?

Splitting off my post makes me have flashbacks of PPF and some of the antics they pull over there. Roll Eyes

Moderator note: moved the posts about the 2013 Iran elections back to this thread from the Israel forum 06/15/13, as this has implications on Syria.

They say this person is a "moderate" - it seems like the Illuminati/MSM loves to make a BIG DEAL over shining a good light over these "moderate" leaders. A lot like how they called George W. Bush a "compassionate conservative" when he first ran in 2000. Or how about the 1994 GOP landslide midterm elections with all of these "moderates"(and subsequently after that through much of the 90's).

Rohani tops early Iran election results, interior ministry says

DUBAI - Moderate cleric Hassan Rohani took a commanding lead over conservative rivals in Iran's presidential election, according to initial results, but it was unclear whether he could avoid a second-round run-off on June 21.

The vote is unlikely to radically alter ties between Tehran and the West, but if Rohani wins he has indicated he would pursue a less confrontational foreign policy than current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and enact a "civil rights charter" at home.

With more than 5.2 million votes counted from the 50 million electorate, Rohani had 52.30 percent of votes cast, Iran's interior ministry said. That would take Rohani above the 50 percent of the vote he needs to avoid a second round run-off on June 21.

Rohani's nearest rival was conservative Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, a long way behind with 17.33 percent. Other hardline candidates scored even lower.

Rohani received significant boosts earlier this week when reformist candidate, Mohammad Reza Aref, withdrew in his favor. His campaign was also endorsed by former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

In contrast, Iran's big-hitting conservatives failed to organize themselves around a single candidate, suffering what appeared a decisive split in their support base as a result.

Voting was extended by several hours at polling stations across the country on Friday as millions of Iranians turned out to cast their ballot in the first presidential race since a disputed 2009 contest led to months of political unrest.

Press TV reported that turnout was about 80 percent.

That's exactly how Louisiana elections are runned(not only local and state, but national as well with Congress and Senate) - they will lump everyone together in the primaries, and if the 1st place person gets more than 50%, then he(or she) wins and there's no runoff. Otherwise the 1st 2 place getters go into a runoff.

Hassan Rouhani is Iran's next president after appealing to tradition, reform

Tehran (CNN) -- Iranian centrist candidate Hassan Rouhani won the Islamic republic's presidential election Saturday after campaigning on a "hope and prudence" platform in which he appealed to traditional conservatives and reform-minded voters alike.

Rouhani spoke of reforms without threatening Iran's supreme leader or its institutions, of which he is product. The former national security council chief promised an environment with greater personal freedoms and even indicated he would free political prisoners and jailed journalists.

In his campaigning, Rouhani also pledged to improve the economy and unemployment, and as a former nuclear negotiator, he said he would reduce the high tension between Iran and the outside world by addressing sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program.

Young and old Iranians continued their celebration of his victory as Saturday became the early minutes of Sunday. They honked horns and flashed victory signs with their fingers.

In a message through the semiofficial Fars News Agency, the 65-year-old Rouhani thanked God "that once again the sun of rationality and moderation is shining over Iran again to send the voice of unity and cohesion of this nation to the world."

He cited "all moderates, all reformists, and all principlists."

"This victory is the victory of wisdom, moderation, growth and awareness, the victory of commitment and religiosity over extremism and ill tempers," Rouhani said.

Egypt cuts relations with Syrian government
6/15/13

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's Islamist president announced Saturday that he was cutting off diplomatic relations with Syria and closing Damascus' embassy in Cairo, decisions made amid growing calls from hard-line Sunni clerics in Egypt and elsewhere to launch a "holy war" against Syria's embattled regime.

Mohammed Morsi told thousands of supporters at a rally in Cairo that his government was also withdrawing the Egyptian charge d'affaires from Damascus. He called on Lebanon's Hezbollah to leave Syria, where the Iranian-backed Shiite militant group has been fighting alongside troops loyal to embattled President Bashar Assad against the mostly Sunni rebels.

"Hezbollah must leave Syria. This is serious talk: There is no business or place for Hezbollah in Syria," said Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president. Assad's regime, he said, will have no place in the future of Syria after committing what Morsi called "horrors" against its people.

Morsi's address, particularly his call on Hezbollah to leave Syria, and the fiery rhetoric used by well-known Muslim clerics this weekend point to the increasing perception of the Syrian conflict as sectarian. At least 93,000 people have been killed since turmoil there began more than two years ago.

The rally that Morsi addressed on Saturday was called for by hardline Islamists loyal to the Egyptian president to show solidarity with the people of Syria. Morsi addressed the rally after several hardline Islamist clerics spoke, all of whom called on him to do everything he could to help the Syrian rebels. Those attending the rally, about 20,000, chanted for solidarity with the Syrians, but occasionally deviated to shout slogans in support of Morsi.

The Egyptian president picked up a flag of the Syrian revolution and another of Egypt and waved them to the crowd as he entered the indoor stadium in a Cairo suburb.

Morsi also used the occasion to warn his opponents at home against the use of violence in mass protests planned for June 30, the anniversary of his assumption to power. Before he spoke, one hardline cleric, Mohammed Abdel-Maqsoud, recited an often repeated Muslim prayer against the "enemies" of God and Islam but used it to refer to the June 30 protesters.

The climate in the Cairo indoor stadium where the rally was held appeared to further entrench the division of Egypt into two camps: one led by Morsi, his Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups, and the other grouping the secular and liberal opposition together with moderate Muslims, minority Christians and a large percentage of women.

In his address, Morsi repeated the allegation that Egyptians loyal to the now-ousted regime of autocrat Hosni Mubarak were behind the planned protests and that they were working against the January 2011 uprising that toppled Mubarak. As customary since taking office, he spoke of himself as a guardian and protector of the revolution, an assertion hotly disputed by his critics.

"Some who are delusionary want to pounce on the January revolution and think that they can undermine the stability that is growing daily or undermine the resolve that people have clearly forged with their will," said Morsi.

"We will deal with them decisively and there will never be a place for them among us," he told his supporters.

Morsi's government is widely thought to have failed to tackle any of the seemingly endless problems facing the country, from power cuts and surging crime to unemployment, steep price rises and fuel shortages. The declared aim of the June 30 protests is to force Morsi out and hold early presidential elections.

Morsi's allies say the protests have no legal basis and amount to a coup against his legitimate rule. They have been calling on opposition leaders to enter a national political dialogue to resolve the crisis, but the opposition has turned down the offer, claiming that previous rounds of dialogue did not yield results.

Spearheading the opposition to Morsi's rule now is a youth protest movement called Tamarod, or rebel, which claims to have collected millions of signatures of Egyptians who want Morsi to step down. Organizers say they aim to collect the signatures of more people than those who voted for Morsi in the June 2012 election.

Some of the hard-line clerics who support Morsi have branded Tamarod activists as infidels or heretics and sought to frame their movement as an act against Islam.

Iran to send 4,000 troops to aid President Assad forces in Syria

World Exclusive: US urges UK and France to join in supplying arms to Syrian rebels as MPs fear that UK will be drawn into growing conflict

6/16/13

Washington’s decision to arm Syria’s Sunni Muslim rebels has plunged America into the great Sunni-Shia conflict of the Islamic Middle East, entering a struggle that now dwarfs the Arab revolutions which overthrew dictatorships across the region.

For the first time, all of America’s ‘friends’ in the region are Sunni Muslims and all of its enemies are Shiites. Breaking all President Barack Obama’s rules of disengagement, the US is now fully engaged on the side of armed groups which include the most extreme Sunni Islamist movements in the Middle East.

The Independent on Sunday has learned that a military decision has been taken in Iran – even before last week’s presidential election – to send a first contingent of 4,000 Iranian Revolutionary Guards to Syria to support President Bashar al-Assad’s forces against the largely Sunni rebellion that has cost almost 100,000 lives in just over two years.  Iran is now fully committed to preserving Assad’s regime, according to pro-Iranian sources which have been deeply involved in the Islamic Republic’s security, even to the extent of proposing to open up a new ‘Syrian’ front on the Golan Heights against Israel.

In years to come, historians will ask how America – after its defeat in Iraq and its humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan scheduled for  2014 – could have so blithely aligned itself with one side in a titanic Islamic struggle stretching back to the seventh century death of the Prophet Mohamed. The profound effects of this great schism, between Sunnis who believe that the father of Mohamed’s wife was the new caliph of the Muslim world and Shias who regard his son in law Ali as his rightful successor – a seventh century battle swamped in blood around the present-day Iraqi cities of Najaf and Kerbala – continue across the region to this day. A 17th century Archbishop of Canterbury, George Abbott, compared this Muslim conflict to that between “Papists and Protestants”.

America’s alliance now includes the wealthiest states of the Arab Gulf, the vast Sunni territories between Egypt and Morocco, as well as Turkey and the fragile British-created monarchy in Jordan. King Abdullah of Jordan – flooded, like so many neighbouring nations, by hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees – may also now find himself at the fulcrum of the Syrian battle.  Up to 3,000 American ‘advisers’ are now believed to be in Jordan, and the creation of a southern Syria ‘no-fly zone’ – opposed by Syrian-controlled anti-aircraft batteries – will turn a crisis into a ‘hot’ war.  So much for America’s ‘friends’.

Its enemies include the Lebanese Hizballah, the Alawite Shiite regime in Damascus and, of course, Iran. And Iraq, a largely Shiite nation which America ‘liberated’ from Saddam Hussein’s Sunni minority in the hope of balancing the Shiite power of Iran, has – against all US predictions – itself now largely fallen under Tehran’s influence and power.  Iraqi Shiites as well as Hizballah members, have both fought alongside Assad’s forces.

Washington’s excuse for its new Middle East adventure – that it must arm Assad’s enemies because the Damascus regime has used sarin gas against them – convinces no-one in the Middle East.  Final proof of the use of gas by either side in Syria remains almost as nebulous as President George W. Bush’s claim that Saddam’s Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

For the real reason why America has thrown its military power behind Syria’s Sunni rebels is because those same rebels are now losing their war against Assad.  The Damascus regime’s victory this month in the central Syrian town of  Qusayr, at the cost of Hizballah lives as well as those of government forces, has thrown the Syrian revolution into turmoil, threatening to humiliate American and EU demands for Assad to abandon power.  Arab dictators are supposed to be deposed – unless they are the friendly kings or emirs of the Gulf – not to be sustained.  Yet Russia has given its total support to Assad, three times vetoing UN Security Council resolutions that might have allowed the West to intervene directly in the civil war.

In the Middle East, there is cynical disbelief at the American contention that it can distribute arms – almost certainly including anti-aircraft missiles – only to secular Sunni rebel forces in Syria represented by the so-called Free Syria Army.  The more powerful al-Nusrah Front, allied to al-Qaeda, dominates the battlefield on the rebel side and has been blamed for atrocities including the execution of Syrian government prisoners of war and the murder of a 14-year old boy for blasphemy.  They will be able to take new American weapons from their Free Syria Army comrades with little effort.

From now on, therefore, every suicide bombing in Damascus - every war crime committed by the rebels - will be regarded in the region as Washington’s responsibility. The very Sunni-Wahabi Islamists who killed thousands of Americans on 11th September, 2011 – who are America’s greatest enemies as well as Russia’s – are going to be proxy allies of the Obama administration. This terrible irony can only be exacerbated by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s adament refusal to tolerate any form of Sunni extremism.  His experience in Chechenya, his anti-Muslim rhetoric – he has made obscene remarks about Muslim extremists in a press conference in Russian – and his belief that Russia’s old ally in Syria is facing the same threat as Moscow fought in Chechenya, plays a far greater part in his policy towards Bashar al-Assad than the continued existence of Russia’s naval port at the Syrian Mediterranean city of Tartous.

For the Russians, of course, the ‘Middle East’ is not in the ‘east’ at all, but to the south of Moscow;  and statistics are all-important. The Chechen capital of Grozny is scarcely 500 miles from the Syrian frontier.  Fifteen per cent of Russians are Muslim.  Six of the Soviet Union’s communist republics had a Muslim majority, 90 per cent of whom were Sunni.  And Sunnis around the world make up perhaps 85 per cent of all Muslims.  For a Russia intent on repositioning itself across a land mass that includes most of the former Soviet Union, Sunni Islamists of the kind now fighting the Assad regime are its principal antagonists.

Iranian sources say they liaise constantly with Moscow, and that while Hizballah’s overall withdrawal from Syria is likely to be completed soon – with the maintenance of the militia’s ‘intelligence’ teams inside Syria – Iran’s support for Damascus will grow rather than wither.  They point out that the Taliban recently sent a formal delegation for talks in Tehran and that America will need Iran’s help in withdrawing from Afghanistan.  The US, the Iranians say, will not be able to take its armour and equipment out of the country during its continuing war against the Taliban without Iran’s active assistance.  One of the sources claimed – not without some mirth -- that the French were forced to leave 50 tanks behind when they left because they did not have Tehran’s help.

It is a sign of the changing historical template in the Middle East that within the framework of old Cold War rivalries between Washington and Moscow, Israel’s security has taken second place to the conflict in Syria.  Indeed, Israel’s policies in the region have been knocked askew by the Arab revolutions, leaving its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, hopelessly adrift amid the historic changes.

Only once over the past two years has Israel fully condemned atrocities committed by the Assad regime, and while it has given medical help to wounded rebels on the Israeli-Syrian border, it fears an Islamist caliphate in Damascus far more than a continuation of Assad’s rule.  One former Israel intelligence commander recently described Assad as “Israel’s man in Damascus”.  Only days before President Mubarak was overthrown, both Netanyahu and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia called Washington to ask Obama to save the Egyptian dictator.  In vain.

If the Arab world has itself been overwhelmed by the two years of revolutions, none will have suffered from the Syrian war in the long term more than the Palestinians.  The land they wish to call their future state has been so populated with Jewish Israeli colonists that it can no longer be either secure or ‘viable’.  ‘Peace’ envoy Tony Blair’s attempts to create such a state have been laughable.  A future ‘Palestine’ would be a Sunni nation.  But today, Washington scarcely mentions the Palestinians.

Another of the region’s supreme ironies is that Hamas, supposedly the ‘super-terrorists’ of Gaza, have abandoned Damascus and now support the Gulf Arabs’ desire to crush Assad.  Syrian government forces claim that Hamas has even trained Syrian rebels in the manufacture and use of home-made rockets.

In Arab eyes, Israel’s 2006 war against the Shia Hizballah was an attempt to strike at the heart of Iran. The West’s support for Syrian rebels is a strategic attempt to crush Iran. But Iran is going to take the offensive.  Even for the Middle East, these are high stakes. Against this fearful background, the Palestinian tragedy continues.

OK, how is the 2013 Iran elections going to have an impact on Syria?

4,000 Iranian troops to Syria to help prop up Assad? Are we seeing how yet?

The Iranian elections were very relevant. One might say even pivotal.

Report: France, Belgium, Saudis Send Weapons to Syrian Rebels

Reports on Monday said that Syrian rebels have begun receiving weapons from France and Belgium, via Saudi Arabia

Reports on Monday said that Syrian rebels have already begun receiving weapons from various sources, as they attempted to wrest control of the country from the control of President Bashar al-Assad. While a debate is taking place in the U.S., Britain, and other countries about helping the rebels with arms, the reports said that rebels have already gotten advanced weapons with the assistance of Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and France.

According to a report by Reuters Monday, all three countries have been working together to supply the rebels with a variety of weapons for several months. Saudi Arabia delivered missiles to rebel groups, obtaining them from sources in Belgium and France. France, the report said, paid for the missiles.

The weapons were delivered to the head of the Free Syrian Army, General Salim Idris, the report added. The FSA is considered the “mainstream” opposition force to the Assad regime. Fighting against Assad also are several groups of radical Islamist Sunnis, affiliated with Al Qaeda. But these groups are not part of the FSA, spokespeople for the group said.

A source quoted by Reuters said that Saudi Arabia had decided to get involved in the conflict after Assad achieved a number of strategic victories in recent weeks. Those victories are mostly due to the assistance of some 4,000 Hizbullah terrorists, who are fighting along with Syrian troops.

Russia says it will not allow Syria no-fly zones

- Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, will not permit no-fly zones to be imposed over Syria, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Monday.

"I think we fundamentally will not allow this scenario," Lukashevich told a news briefing, adding that calls for a no-fly zone showed disrespect for international law.

Lukashevich spoke before planned talks between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama on the sidelines of a G8 summit in Northern Ireland which were expected to focus on the conflict in Syria that has killed at least 93,000 people.

Russia and the United States are trying to bring representatives of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his foes to the negotiating table, but Moscow has criticized U.S. plans to arm rebel forces and to consider imposing a no-fly zone.

"All these maneuvers about no-fly zones and humanitarian corridors are a direct consequence of a lack of respect for international law," Lukashevich said.

He said Russia did not want a scenario in Syria that resembled the events in Libya after the imposition of a no-fly zone which enabled NATO aircraft to help rebels overthrow Muammar Gaddafi.

Beck: Government ‘Dragging’ Us Into a War We ‘Will Not Survive’ in the Middle East

Glenn Beck asserted on his weekday television program Monday that “we are moving in the wrong direction [as] a country,” particularly with regard to the Middle East, and that that “we will all be destroyed because of it.” Speaking about the U.S. government’s recent decision to arm the rebels in Syria, Beck said lawmakers in both parties are “dragging” us into yet another war.

‘A Redrawing of the Map’: Syria’s Assad Delivers Chilling Warning to Europe & the World

Syria’s president warned that Europe “will pay a price” if it delivers weapons to the rebels fighting him, saying in an interview published Monday that arming them would backfire as the “terrorists” return to their countries with extremist ideologies. Assad further warned that as the conflict spills into neighboring countries, blurring borders, it will set off a domino effect.

Does the Bible Predict God’s End-Times Destruction of Syria — and Is Prophecy About to Unfold Before Our Eyes?

As the situation in Syria intensifies and the United Nations reports that 93,000 civilians have been killed since 2011, the United States is taking increased action. With the deadly drama continuing to progress, it’s likely that some — especially considering Syria’s Biblical and geographical significance — will see End Times prophecy unfolding.

Didn't Beck recently have some "bombshell" news? Whatever happened to that? Roll Eyes

Russia says it will not allow Syria no-fly zones

It's been interesting to see how countries change direction, and back again. This recent attitude projected from Russia is like the old school hard nose Communists of the 60's and 70's.

Seriously, what is in Syria for Russia to be so insistent on backing Assad? We know the world operates on the love of money, so where is the real money? It must be big to be risking outright war in the Middle East.

Maybe this is the spark that leads to all out war which leads to a peace treaty and the beginning of the tribulation period. God knows.

okay i had this thought yesterday, that Antioch in Syria is where Christians were first called Christians and was a major base of the early Church. So now there is war in Syria and i dont know if there are any real Christians still inside Syria but this situation could well be a sign that the Rapture of the Church is very near. Satan is trying to destroy the place where the first Christians were because the real Church has triumphed with God's help over satan.

On the surface, it might seem that way, but I don't think so. Consider that Christians have not been a major force in that area for like hundreds of years at least, if ever. No question they were an extreme minority at the time, and still are to this day in that region. Personally, I see no special connection with Antioch and Christians, other than being mentioned it's where believers were first called Christians.

I see no special connection with Antioch and Christians, other than being mentioned it's where believers were first called Christians.

"Antioch's geographic, military and economic location, particularly the spice trade, the Silk Road, the Persian Royal Road, benefited its occupants, and eventually it rivaled Alexandria as the chief city of the Near East and as the main center of Hellenistic Judaism at the end of the Second Temple period. Antioch was a chief center of early Christianity. The city had a large population of Jewish origin in a quarter called the Kerateion, and so attracted the earliest missionaries. The Christian population was estimated by Chrysostom at about 100,000 people at the time of Theodosius I (347 – 395AD)."

'Exercise Eager Lion' War Games Active in Jordanian Desert

Military forces from Jordan and the US are drilling together in the Jordanian desert with 17 other nations in Exercise Eager Lion 2013.

6/19/13

Military forces from Jordan and the U.S. are drilling together in the Jordanian desert with 17 other nations in Exercise Eager Lion 2013 -- the third such military drill to take place in Jordan.

The 12-day war games, slated to end Thursday, was explained by a statement on the website of the U.S. Armed Forces Central Command as an opportunity to "promote cooperation and interoperability among participants," but appears clearly intended to send a warning to Jordan’s northern neighbor, Syria.

At least one or two Patriot anti-missile batteries was recently deployed by the U.S. along the Jordanian-Syrian border to defend the kingdom against spillover from the country’s savage civil war. A similar set of four such batteries were deployed by NATO along Turkey’s border with Syria in January for similar reasons.

Involving forces on land, sea and in the air, the exercises bring together 8,000 troops from a total of 19 European and Arab nations. All are engaged in learning counterinsurgency techniques, fighting terrorism, non-standard warfare methods and border security.

Among the participants are also 7,000 civilian workers from humanitarian non-governmental organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The drill is designed to build the capability to cooperate and interoperate between the participating forces, build functional capacity, practice crisis management and enhance readiness, according to a statement by the U.S. Armed Forces.

A paratroop drill earlier this week described as a "friendship jump" by the U.S. Central Command public affairs department "was designed to help U.S. paratroopers "learn how they conduct an airborne operation."

U.S. Army Maj. Ryan Schloesser, civil affairs planning chief, 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) said the jump was also "a good opportunity for them to watch us conduct an airborne operation."

Jordanian Chief Warrant Officer Firas Domi, command sergeant major of the Jordanian special operations forces commented, "We learn a lot from them – and sometimes we teach them something."

Iran's New President is No Moderate

"Moderate" is a word that has ceased to have much meaning. As in "moderate president of Iran."

The new president of Iran is named Hassan Rouhani, and much of the media have labeled him as a moderate. But Rouhani was part of a slate of candidates approved by the radical clerics who actually determine policy in Iran, like nuclear policy.

Rouhani has a track record of radicalism. He has a smiling, benign face, but he is no moderate. The Ayatollahs like him because he can be used to persuade the easily duped that Iran is moderating while it continues full steam ahead building nuclear weapons.

Rouhani may not sound as belligerent as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but you know that old line about putting lipstick on a pig, don't you? It's still a pig and Rouhani is still a radical who believes in the same things the ruling Ayatollahs believe. And they are no moderates.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.

I think that's part of the spiritual aspect of, "come in peaceably...", and "with flatteries".

Of course the world calls evil good, so their sales pitch is designed to make the people think he's not a threat, when in realty, the truth is just the opposite.

11 countries pledge to ramp up aid to Syrian rebels amid bloody conflict

Secretary of State John Kerry appealed Saturday for a resolution to the bloody war in Syria, warning on a trip to Qatar that continued violence could plunge the Middle East into turbulent sectarian conflict.

Kerry met in the Qatari capital of Doha with officials from 10 Arab and European nations to coordinate assistance to the rebels fighting to force Syrian President Bashar Assad out of office. The two-year civil war has left 93,000 dead.

The nations in attendance all pledged to ramp up aid to the anti-government rebels, Kerry said.

“What is clear is that every country committed today to step up what it is doing in direct response to what has happened on the ground,” Kerry said.

Nine out of the eleven countries in attendance have elected to provide “practical support to the opposition in Syria through the military council,” Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani said, suggesting that those nine countries will supply various types of arms to opposition forces.

Although Kerry did not provide specifics on the extent to which the Obama administration plans to aid the rebels, he said the assistance would give them an advantage on the battlefield, where Assad’s regime and pro-government forces have won crucial victories.

Ministers from other participating nations condemned the intervention of Hezbollah militias and fighters from Iran and Iraq in Syria, who have come to Assad's regime's aid in cities like Qusayr, Aleppo and Ghouta.

Kerry said that the urgency of the U.S. response is partly a product of the increasingly sectarian nature of the conflict.

"What is different is that this is now in response to what Iran and Hezbollah are doing," Kerry said.

The Saturday summit marked Kerry’s first meeting with other foreign ministers since President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. would deliver lethal weapons to the rebels amid outcry that the arms could be appropriated by Islamic extremists in Syria.

Kerry’s meeting with his counterparts in Doha is the first leg of a seven-nation trip through the Mideast and Asia, where he is slated to address a range of vexing foreign policy issues, from the conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians to the proposed peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban.

Russia Offers Iran New Replacement for S-300 – Paper

MOSCOW, June 22 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow made a new attempt to dodge a $4-billion lawsuit from Tehran over a failed deal to supply S-300 missile systems by offering another type of air defense system to Iran, Kommersant daily said Saturday.

The new offer on the table is Antei-2500, aka S-300VM, or SA-23 Gladiator in NATO nomenclature, the newspaper said, citing unnamed sources in the Russian arms trade industry. The missile defense system can simultaneously destroy up to 24 aircraft within the range a range of 200 kilometers or intercept up to 16 ballistic missiles.

The deal can be formalized during the visit of outgoing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Moscow on July 1, an unnamed Iranian diplomat told Kommersant.

Iran was initially interested in the S-300 missile complexes, signing in 2007 a contract worth $800 million for five missile defense systems of this make.

But the deal was scrapped in 2010 by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who was unilaterally expanding on sanctions against Iran imposed by the UN Security Council.

Iran filed a $4-billion lawsuit against Russia in the international arbitration court in Geneva, which is currently pending review.

Moscow has struggled to have the lawsuit dropped, including by offering the Tor anti-aircraft systems as replacement, media reported earlier this month, adding that the offer was rejected by Tehran.

The Antei-2500, however, may be a better solution. The system does not formally fall under the existing sanctions against Iran while still being useful for the Middle Eastern country, which wants to have protection against a possible missile strike by its enemy Israel, Kommersant said.

While the S-300 was developed for the use by missile defense forces, the Antei-2500 was specifically tailored for the needs of ground forces, which could also be an advantage for Iran, known for its large land force.

Russia is already exporting the Antei-2500, having delivered two missile systems to Venezuela earlier this year. India and Turkey were also named as potential buyers, though no deals were formalized so far.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West on Friday against arming the Syrian rebels, which he said included terrorist groups, and against a hasty exit by Syrian President Bashar Assad, which would lead to a political vacuum.

“If the United States … recognizes one of the key Syrian opposition organizations, al-Nusra, as terrorist … how can one deliver arms to those opposition members? Where will they end up? What role will they play?” asked Putin during a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The United States announced earlier this month that it will start directly arming the rebels, a major policy shift by the Obama administration.

Putin also defended his country’s continued support for and arms sales to the embattled Syrian regime, positing that Russian supplies do not violate any international laws. He also warned that should Assad leave, a political vacuum would ensue.

“If Assad goes today, a political vacuum emerges – who will fill it? Maybe those terrorist organizations. Nobody wants this – but how can it be avoided? After all, they are armed and aggressive,” said Putin.

The Russian president charged that the rebels have been receiving weapons and support from the West for some time and that Syria would not be in the situation it is in without outside intervention.

Putin’s criticisms came hours after a report in the Los Angeles Times claiming the US has been secretly providing arms training to the Syrian opposition since late 2012, in US training bases run by CIA operatives and special operations troops in Jordan and Turkey.

“The premise that Assad is using weapons against his own people can be accepted as true only with significant reservations, because those who are fighting Assad are far from being the Syrian people but are rather militants, who are perfectly trained and armed, including from abroad, through channels that include those run by terrorist organizations,” said Putin.
