Russia Targets U.S.-Backed Forces In Syria While Administration Tries to Finalize 'Memorandum of Understanding'

Fox News reported on Wednesday that Russia is deliberately attacking American interests and our forces in Syria, and that our government knows it. What are we doing about it? Attempting to finalize a "memorandum of understanding," according to CNN.

But even as they try to "de-conflict," evidence is mounting that Russia's air campaign is targeting more than just the Islamic State. "Putin is deliberately targeting our forces," a U.S. official, who is disappointed in the U.S. response to Russia, told Fox News.

"Our guys are fighting for their lives," said the official, estimating up to 150 CIA-trained moderate rebels have been killed by the Russians.

“Striking ISIL continues to be the least of Moscow’s priorities in Syria, said a U.S. intelligence official who also warned Putin might not look so tough if a Russian helicopter were downed or some Russian soldiers captured.

Meanwhile, Russia and the United States state they are on the verge of finalizing a "memorandum of understanding. from CNN:

he United States and Russia are in the process of finalizing a memorandum of understanding regarding safety over Syrian airspace, a U.S. official told CNN Wednesday.

Both Russia and the United States "have a consensus on the technical aspects" of how parties to the agreement will conduct themselves to assure the safety of their pilots, but they still have some final details over the wording of the agreement to work out, the official said.

That development came the same day that U.S. and Russian defense officials held their third video conference aimed at reaching an understanding governing aerial operations since Russian military jets began their own bombing campaign in Syria.

Russia said Wednesday that one of its fighter jets had approached a U.S.-led coalition warplane in Syrian airspace for identification purposes. U.S. Col. Steven Warren, spokesman of the U.S.-led coalition, had said earlier that the planes had come “miles apart” on Saturday, prompting fears that crowded skies over Syria could lead to mid-air collisions.

President Obama and Josh Earnest have been fond of repeating the surpassingly silly idea that Russia is approaching this conflict from "a position of weakness." But with U.S. forces under fire, and our own planes under threat, our best answer is to give way and struggle to get an unenthusiastic Russia to deign to signing our memorandum of rose petals and rainbows. As the bullets, bombs, and jets fly, who is really in the position of weakness here?
