The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. 911 tape overhears woman struggling for life after botched abortion

A chilling 911 call from an abortion clinic, in which a clinic worker describes the worsening condition of a botched abortion victim, has been released by Operation Rescue.

The pro-life group published the recording of a call from the UNM Center for Reproductive Health (UNMCRH) in a Youtube video on June 30.

“She’s unresponsive right now. I can hear them trying to,” the staffer is overheard saying, after which there seems to be heard some commotion. “Can you hear them? They’re calling her name out right now,” she adds.

The staffer says at first that the woman is awake, then that she is responding “better” and “starting to breathe again.”

“Is she breathing completely normal?” asks the dispatcher, to which the staffer responds, “no.” Another staffer confirms that the woman’s breathing is irregular, and that her skin is beginning to turn ashen.

“She’s like grayish,’” says the woman.

All the while, what appears to be the sound of the woman gasping for breath is often heard in the background. “Keep breathing. Breathe deeper. Good. Good. Deep breath,” voices can be heard saying. The woman is deemed “not responsive at all” before the call is terminated.

Operation Rescue notes that the anonymous woman was transported to a hospital for emergency care, and that her fate is unknown. The group also says that New Mexico has “virtually no laws” regulating abortion.

“There are thousands of calls like this out there, but pro-life researchers are often blocked from receiving them,” Operation Rescue notes at the end of the Youtube video. “This silencing of public information only serves to ensure that more calls like this will continue.” (See Operation Rescue’s report here.)

Pro-life advocates on the state level frequently fight for higher standards of operation at abortion clinics, such as requiring that abortionists have local hospital privileges and that medical equipment, such as gurneys, can fit in the building. However, abortion providers routinely fight any such regulations in court: most recently, new regulations in Kansas were blocked by a judge at the request of two local facilities.

The problem of unregulated clinics hit the national limelight in March 2010, when Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s practice was found by investigators to be so shockingly filthy that the building was dubbed a “House of Horrors.” Investigators only stumbled upon the facility after the botched-abortion death of Karnamaya Mongar, who died thanks to medical emergency personnel’s inability to transport her out of a cluttered building, the rear exit of which was padlocked shut.

Scores of victims later emerged to testify against Gosnell, who now faces a possible death penalty for murder for the death of several newborn infants and one mother.

Another sordid abortion practice came to light last year after officials learned that abortionist Stephen Chase Brigham had routinely transported patients mid-abortion from New Jersey to Maryland, where he dodged a restriction on late-term abortions and other regulations. He did not have hospital privileges in the state. His practice only came to light after Brigham transported a heavily bleeding 18-year-old abortion patient in the back of his Chevrolet Malibu to a local hospital, where bewildered staff questioned who he was and where he came from.

Late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart, who recently relocated his practice to Maryland, also has no hospital privileges in the state, which does not regulate abortion clinics as surgical facilities.

New Mexico abortion facility mad about release of 911 call from botched abortion

The release of a 911 tape in which a woman is overheard fighting for life after a botched abortion has angered the facility where the abortion took place.

In a letter to the editor of the New Mexico Daily Lobo, UNM Executive Director of Communications Billy Sparks said the abortion-providing center offers gynecological procedures “in a safe and supportive environment.”

“It is unfortunate that organizations use situations without knowing the facts, especially when discussion and public disclosure may violate the right of all patients to maintain the confidentiality of their medical information,” he wrote.

In the tape, voices can be heard attempting to rouse the woman, who audibly gasps for breath as the caller describes her “grayish” color before she becomes “not responsive at all.” The woman’s age and first name are mentioned.

UNM Center for Reproductive Health abortionist Tony Ogburn also criticized Defending Life, the pro-life group that published the recording and recently opened a pregnancy resource center across the street from the abortion site.

“What they have is not a medical clinic, and they have no licensed health care professionals,” Ogburn told the Lobo. “They have an agenda, and their goal is not to provide legal healthcare.”

Ogburn and another UNM spokesperson told the paper that the patient in the 911 call was not transported to the hospital and was released that day, but would not disclose why the patient was in distress. “People don’t need to know,” said Ogburn.

Operation Rescue Senior Policy Advisor Cheryl Sullenger questioned UNM officials for their backlash in the media.

“It is more likely that they are upset that we found out about this life-threatening abortion complication than they are about patient privacy,” she said.

“The incident raises standard of care issues at UNMCRH and brings attention to the fact that the University of New Mexico, a publicly funded institution, is up to their ears in the abortion business training UNM students and profiting from the taking of innocent human life through abortion.”

New Mexico has virtually no health and safety standards for abortion facilities, something Operation Rescue says has helped cause an alarming number of emergency situations.

Four additional 911 calls from botched abortions were placed within a recent 15-month period from another abortion clinic in Albuquerque, revealing complications such as hemorrhaging and uterine rupture. At least one of those patients was transferred from the clinic, Southwestern Women’s Options, to UNM Hospital for emergency treatment.

“There is a move by abortionists to hide behind the privacy rights of their patients to cover up their own mistakes,” said Sullenger. “They don’t want anyone to know the truth about the real dangers women face during an abortion, especially in the later stages of pregnancy.”

Abortion death reported at New Mexico clinic as state officials resist launching investigation

Health officials in New Mexico appear to be resisting an investigation of abortion facilities that have placed multiple botched-abortion calls to 911 in recent months, according to pro-life leaders. Meanwhile, the pro-life leaders say a report has emerged of a woman dying at one of the facilities just last month.

The pro-life groups Operation Rescue and Project Defending Life both filed complaints with the New Mexico Medical Board concerning thirteen 911 calls from the University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health (UNMCRH) and Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO), a late-term abortion mill operated by Texas abortionist Curtis Boyd.

Several of the calls describe profuse bleeding and other abortion complications. One recording caught the gasping of a woman struggling for breath, whom a clinic worker described as “grayish” and unresponsive, following complications from an abortion.

A letter from the Board dated July 14, 2011, notified Cheryl Sullenger of Operation Rescue that an investigation of three SWO abortionists had been initiated. However, last week the groups received letters from a Board attorney that they say improperly demanded that they supply information protected by patient privacy laws.

Sullenger says she asked Board Executive Director Lynn Hart last week by telephone to clarify whether there would be an investigation, and claims she was rudely treated.

“Ms. Hart was unprofessional and accusatory, reiterating the demand that I ascertain patient names and other private information before the Board would proceed with any investigation. Her language revealed to me a radical pro-abortion mindset. At one point she told me there would be no investigation of any complaint filed by me,” said Sullenger.

After the call, Sullenger says Hart restated in a letter her demand for private patient information. “It is improper for the Board to ask us to do their investigation for them,” said Sullenger.

“The Medical Board has all it needs to investigate the thirteen abortion-related injuries in our complaints. Hart is trying to tank this investigation by making demands that are above and beyond what are actually needed to investigate why women are being injured and possibly killed at two Albuquerque abortion clinics at the rate of one every ten weeks.”

Sullenger and Shaver say they plan to submit additional information as appropriate to the Board this week in an attempt to satisfy some of Hart’s requests.

Meanwhile, a confidential informant came forward after seeing news coverage of one of the 911 calls and told pro-life groups that a woman had died from abortion-related injuries at UNMCRH last month, Operation Rescue reports.

According to the informant, an emergency vehicle picked up the body and transported it to an unknown location. Clinic workers who were visibly upset and shaken at the time of the incident were told not to discuss the situation with anyone.

Operation Rescue and Project Defending Life say they were unable to independently corroborate the patient death, but reported the allegation to police.

“We have seen several abortionists, such as Rapin Osathanondh and Kermit Gosnell, criminally charged and sent to jail after abortion deaths,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

“Because of the fact that a death is involved, and because there appeared to be an attempt to cover up the death by ordering workers not to talk, it became our duty to report this to the police.”
