More than 4,000 birds to be culled in MP

RAIPUR: Soon after the samples sent from Anjora and Jagdalpur farm were declared positive by Bhopal's High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory, as a threat of bird flu (avian influenza) in Chhattisgarh, the rapid response team of Animal Husbandry's Veterinary Department, commenced disinfection in the region, killing more than 4,000 birds there.

Talking to TOI, S K Pandey, director, Animal Husbandry Department, said, "The cleaning and sanitation work is underway in both the affected areas which would finish latest by Wednesday morning. An area of one kilometer around the radius of infected zones would be sanitized. We had an inspection meeting with the alertness committee, health, forest and revenue officials after the Union ministry advised killing the birds in the affected areas. Nearly 2,500-3,000 birds have already died out of which 500 were in Anjora farm, Durg district and 3,000 in Jagdalpur's Kukkut farm."

He said that the birds, including hens and ducks, would be killed and buried there itself along with disposing off of their eggs, litter and disinfection of their shed. Pandey said that the department will have to be aware about every single death of birds and inform the Centre.

"Nearly 4,500 birds would be killed in this process after which the situation will come under control as no selling and distribution of these birds being undertaken. Hence, chances of spreading the infection are rare," Pandey said adding the department has imposed a ban on the movement of poultry products from the infected region to alerted zones.

Few officials claimed that the poultry birds are also exposed to high risk of bird flu and with the severity of disease, selling and purchasing from other states has been banned for next few months.

Refuting the claims, Dhanraj Banerjee, director, egg industry, said that it was important for people to understand that with so many bird flu alerts in West Bengal, Bangalore and Orissa there have been no declared cases of human infection so far. It commonly happens with the local breeds kept in government universities and veterinary colleges which are not vaccinated properly. "Consumers get scared after such alerts but they needn't worry because the poultry birds or the commercial farming breed are white feathered which undergo advanced technique lab tests. Hygiene and bio security in ensured with the quality of the product," Dhanraj said. Though there have been reports that the poultry business has been affected with fewer sales of eggs and chickens, Dhanraj said that it's also because of the ongoing religious Saawan month when people keep away from eating non-vegetarian food. "Just like how chickens have nothing to do with Chikungunya disease, bird flu has nothing to do with commercial farm birds," he said.

Chemical could have caused mass fish death at Par Beach
8/7/13

INVESTIGATORS probing the deaths of more than 1,000 fish in a stretch of the Par River say they have found a chemical in the water.

The Environment Agency classed the incident as Category 1, the most serious, after reports began to come in on Monday, July 26, of large numbers of dead fish along an 8km stretch between Luxulyan and Par Beach.

Cornwall Council placed signs at the beach warning people to stay out of the water but removed them on Wednesday, July 31, after it was decided heavy rainfall would have diluted any pollutant and washed it out to sea.

Mike Dunning from the Environmental Agency, described the incident as unusual, in that the pollutant seemed to be very toxic to the fish while having no effect on other life in the river.

Its investigations had found traces of a chemical, but tests were continuing to establish whether this was the cause.

"We had some results back that have shown small traces of a chemical in the water, but whether this is enough to kill so many fish is being looked into by an ecological toxicologist and we hope to have some results soon," he said.

John Page from the Friends of Par Beach said members had been frustrated to find themselves having to field concerned visitors' questions about the pollution which they were unable to answer because of a lack of information from the authorities, and he hoped some facts would be forthcoming in the near future.

"As far as I'm aware all is well," he said. "The warning notices came down early in the week, presumably as Cornwall Council thought there was no more risk from the incident, but I'll be very interested now to hear what the Environment Agency does find out."

Hundreds of pounds of dead Kiiski has drifted to shore Yläne

Heaps of dead Kiiski is found Pyhäjärvi the beach, Yläneeltä.  Distance to the beach ajelehtineiden dead kiiskien is estimated at hundreds, even a thousand pounds.  Kiiskien summery number of death is rare.  A similar case is known only to the year 2004.

In 2004, Yläne Pyhäjärven the shore, and Vahoniemennokan Pehkurannan between, about eight kilometers, 500 pounds lying dead Kiiski.

Now, almost ten years later, the same event recurs again.  Even the location is the same.  A rough estimate of the Kiiski this year of drifting dead in the beach hundreds of pounds, up to a thousand.  The first report was made 12 Kiiskinen  July.

 - Kiiskien a number of summer deaths are rare.  I have not heard that this had happened elsewhere in the country, says Southwest Finland ELY-center specialist Harri Helminen.

Kiisket have died in helminth infections

Last time, in 2004, the dead Kiiski studied at Åbo Akademi University.  Ruff deaths found in the background of a parasitic infection.  Also this time the cause of death kiiskien is believed to be similar to infection.

 - Kiiski works nematode larvae as intermediate hosts.  In the normal case, the negative force of the parasite is not disturbed.  Now, however, it appears that the parasite from time to time becomes active and kills the fish.  Dead fish have been the only Kiiski, because this is the only nematode parasite kiiskien, describes a specialist Harri Helminen.

Both the 2004 and this year's ruff deaths associated with deaths in pre-warm cycle.  The temperature may be associated with activation of the parasite.

 "No disaster is not running"

Dead Kiiski is no longer found in August Pyhäjärven the beach.  The epidemic is believed to be over.

 - This is just part of the normal operation of ekosysteeminen.  Parasites for some reason, between killing fish stocks and other biota.  All by itself is a natural phenomenon in question.  No disaster is now in progress, reminiscent of Southwest Finland ELY-center specialist Harri Helminen.

Kiiskien continuing investigation into the Åbo Akademi University.

Thousands of dead fish wash ashore
8/6/13

Karachi

Recent torrential rains have not only caused misery for the citizens of Karachi but they have also not spared marine life. Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have washed up on the shores of Karachi possibly poisoned by the polluted rainwater flowing through the Lyari River.

The dead fish, mainly mullets (locally known as boi) are found abundantly in the waters off the Karachi Harbour. Mass mortality of fish has been linked to the chemical-laden rainwater flowing through the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE), sparking concern among environmentalists, scientists and the citizens alike.

Despite action taken by the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency, the sewage water loaded with pollutants continues to reach downstream at the Manora Channel unabated, posing a grave environmental hazard.

Khalid Mahmood, the co-principal investigator of the Worldwide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF), pointed out the mortality of the mullets, sea bream and scat fish has taken place around Baba Island, which is located in the midst of lower harbour of Manora Channel.

Due to the incoming high tide, the fish have been dumped by the sea in the Chinna Creek, Native Jetty and Bhatta Village areas. The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has started a cleanup operation with the help of fishermen, who have removed about 35 metric tonnes of small-sized fish. These fish are considered important commercial species that are relished by the locals, especially the fishermen community.

Muhammad Moazzam Khan, the technical adviser on marine fisheries at WWF-P, said this was not the first case of mass fish kill at Karachi harbour. On many occasions in the past, release of chemicals by the industries in SITE has resulted in mortality of mullets and other fish in the Karachi harbour.

He pointed out that industrial waste discharged through the Lyari River had to be tackled at point sources on a watershed approach with the active involvement of all stakeholders.

Khan said that rainwater usually resulted in higher productivity in the coastal areas because it was rich in nutrients.“But when the water passes through the industrial areas, it gets heavily polluted. Rather than being a blessing to the marine life, it results in mass fish mortality,” he added.

Sewage flowing through the Lyari River and Gizri Creek, which receives sewage through Malir River, has already turned the Karachi Fish Harbour into azoic zones, where there is no marine life.

Rab Nawaz, the WWF-P director, stressed the need for a comprehensive master plan for controlling the pollution resulting from discharge of industrial and domestic waste through Lyari and Malir rivers.

“Around 435 million gallon per day (mgd) sewage is dumped into the sea through these two rivers, resulting in extreme high levels of pollution,” he claimed. About 85 percent of sewage is dumped into the sea without any treatment resulting in mortality, bio-accumulation and depletion of area with animals and plants.

The sewage treatment capacity of Karachi is only 75mgd, provided the treatment plants operate at their full capacity, Nawaz said.He applauded the KPT’s effort to initiate cleanup operations to remove the dead fish. The fish have been sold to fish meal plants.

Brief rain spells death for salmon fry in Port Coquitlam
8/6/13

Last week's cool, refreshing rain meant death to hundreds of fish in Hyde Creek in Port Coquitlam.

Members of the Hyde Creek Watershed Society arrived for volunteer duties Saturday to find 840 dead salmon fry in the creek between Coast Meridian road and the Hyde Creek recreation centre.

"It was very disappointing," society president Cliff Kelsey said of the devastation that was probably caused by a concentration of pollutants from road runoff.

Black water that collected in pools containing the dead fish was sent to a lab for confirmation but it was likely oil and other residue from the road that killed the salmon.

The fish kill comes as volunteers have been putting in extra hours to save salmon fry stuck in shallow pools. With stream levels dropping, many fish get stuck in the pools and need to be helped along to deeper portions of the creek.

Jean Peachman, a director with the Hyde Creek Watershed Society, said hatchery volunteers have been busy taking fry from areas where the stream is drying up and taking them to deeper basins.

"A few of our members know what pools are going to dry up," she told The Tri-City News. "They get in there with buckets and nets and grab as many as we can get."

Because coho fry tend to stay in fresh water longer than other salmon, they are often in the creek during the warmest months of the year. That means that hatchery workers have to pull as many fish as they can, relocating them from one pool to another, while estimating where water levels are going to go.

Peachman said net-wielding volunteers usually scan the creek two to three times a week in an effort to save as many of the fry as possible.

"It just helps the numbers [of fish] in the system," she said.

Although dry weather has resulted in low water levels in the creek, the salmon pond where coho fry overwinter remains deep and clean, thanks to a well that was recently dug to provide fresh water.

Kelsey said the work the volunteers do pays off because coho salmon have been returning to the creek in greater numbers. Until two years ago, returning salmon were rare and hard to find but the last two years has seen numbers of spawning pairs returning to their home creek.

"It's been heartening to see our numbers have increased dramatically," Kelsey said.

However, he noted that the recent fish kill underscores how important it is for the community to keep pollutants out of creeks and streams.

PLANT REMOVAL

Volunteers will also be needed this weekend when the society hosts its invasive plant removal event along Hyde Creek. Many species of plants, including English ivy and laniums, choke out the natural trees in the area, decreasing the amount of shade covering the stream.

Members of the public are encouraged to volunteer for the program, which will meet at the hatchery (3636 Coast Meridian Rd.) on Saturday, Aug. 10 between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Participants should bring gloves and long pants, and will be treated to coffee and a tour of the hatchery.

Why Are Millions Of Fish Suddenly Dying In Mass Death Events All Over The Planet?

Millions upon millions of fish are suddenly dying in mass death events all over the world, and nobody seems to know why it is happening.  In many of the news reports that are linked to below, locals are quoted as saying that they have never seen anything like this before.  So is there a connection between all of the fish deaths that are now occurring all over the planet?  If there is a connection, is there anything that we can do to stop the fish die-off?  Sadly, because the big mainstream news networks in the United States have been virtually silent about this phenomenon, most Americans have absolutely no idea that it is happening.  Millions of fish are dying in mass death events every single month and most of the public is totally clueless.

Please share the list posted below with as many people as you can.  This list was originally started by Frank DiMora, but I have edited it and expanded it.  If there were just three or four items on this list, you could dismiss these news stories as coincidences, but taken together this list really is quite startling…

So why is this happening?

Is there anything we can do to stop it?

Yeah, reports are coming in almost daily now. You think the MSM is silent over Obama's current scandals? Well, at least the few peeps I hear about his scandals on the tv news have been WAY more than the next to nil reporting over these almost daily massive fish and water animal deaths.

If those reports are true and reasonably accurate, I'm thinking it could be related to seismic activity, as in small releases of gases which are affecting oxygen levels. It doesn't take much of a percent change in O2 levels and things start dying fast.

But then your left with THEIR reports on what the cause of death is based on THEIR findings. We cannot say for sure, as we cannot verify scientists are telling the truth.

I know I need to keep examining myself over these kinds of reports, to see if I'm not maybe mistakenly applying tribulation events to events taking place now. We know these things are not the events described in Revelation because those specific events happen during the tribulation period.

That said, Jesus makes it clear that events WILL take place before the tribulation period, events that will be bad for the world. THEN the tribulation period begins, and things get REAL bad!

From all of the reports I've read, people are by and large either bewildered, or in other cases it's been b/c of the record high temperatures(higher the temperature the less oxygen these water animals will have). But even with the latter case, it's left a lot of people bewildered.

With that being said - there's been record high temperatures in recent years, only getting worse and worse. No, it has nothing to do with global warming obviously, but maybe all of the HAARP/chemtrail spraying may be playing a part in this. Of course, scripture says in the latter days that evil seducers shall wax worse and worse, and love shall wax cold as iniquity shall get worse.

Millions of dead fish appear on the beaches of Tolu
8/10/13

Locals and tourists were surprised by the appearance of millions of dead fish in the sea of Tolu.
Small fish were driven ashore on the beaches in the early hours of Friday.
The wake bright, for the color of the fish, spread over a mile into the sea and the beach.
Among the dead fish native species identified as Amarguita, Conchúa, Bearded and Pelona.
Morrosquillo Gulf Fishermen, said this is an ecological catastrophe that is not normal.
Several of them said that this could be effects of the release of the chemicals used by oil companies in the neighboring port of Covenas to disperse the oil that spills of shipments. Technicians on the subject claim that the case could be due to a number of factors to be analyzed carefully.  Death could be the result of contamination from people fishing population, changes in water temperature, lack of oxygen for fish crowding or lack of food.
The director of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Sucre, Carsucre, Baduín Ricardo Ricardo said sampled both dead fish and water which appeared to determine possible causes of death. The official stressed that laboratory results expected during the next week.

Hundreds of Dead Fish Found in Pond at National Mall

Approximately 1,000 dead fish have been found floating in a pond at the National Mall, the National Park Service has confirmed.

A Park Service crew will test the water and algae levels at the Constitution Gardens pond Thursday.

However, the number is not unusual for that pond, officials said, due to the construction and design of the area. The Park Service said it's long stressed the importance of redesigning the pond to maintain a better ecological balance.

The pond is at the top of the list for construction upgrades.

It could take several days to determine the cause of the incident.

Constitution Gardens is located in West Potomac Park, near Constitution Avenue and 17th Street NW. In addition to the pond, it also includes a memorial to the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, and several walkways and benches.

Sewage biogas finished in rivers: a firm reported

Civitanova Marche (Macerata), August 8, 2013 - Late yesterday afternoon has been identified and blocked by agents of the State Forestry Corps Stations forest Montegiorgio and Macerata, a severe spill of waste water from a well-known firm of Sant ' Elpidio a Mare the 'Ambruosi and Viscardi'.  Fluvial Ete dead and Chienti to the mouth compromised because of sewage, hundreds of dead fish, dark waters with obvious foams pollutants in suspension.

Some stretches of the river ecosystem completely destroyed due to the severe eutrophication of waters and the consequent sudden reduction of oxygen, the risk of algal blooms. Helicopter AB 412, the State Forestry Corps got up early this morning from Falconara, has scoured the whole the area in order to limit the amount of pollution and identify perpetrators of serious environmental crime.  Withdrawals by technicians of the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of the Marches (ARPAM) pollution is visible to the mouth of Chienti.

The owner of the company was reported to the judicial authorities for the crimes of aggravated damage to public waters, illegal disposal of waste and jet dangerous things, risks penalties of up to three years imprisonment.  Large quantities of sewage destined to fertilize fields, are merged in the river water, resulting in a severe eutrophication of waters and severe fish kills.  Agents Stations forest Montegiorgio and Macerata in conjunction with the Environmental Police Unit and Forestry of Ascoli Piceno investigate with the help of aerial surveys and delll'ARPAM, the level of pollution, authorization and documentation in possession of the company in question .  The Harbour of Civitanova Marche was activated to check the possible effects on the coastal bathing together with the mayors of the municipalities concerned.

Extreme Heat Is Killing Off Thousands Of Fish In Alaska

Unusually hot, dry weather in Alaska is wreaking havoc on fisheries, as thousands of fish perish in overheated waters. Last month, 1,100 king salmon died on their way up to the Crystal Lake hatchery due to water temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and lack of oxygen. That’s the bulk of the 1,800 adult salmon that were expected to return to the hatchery this season.

Earlier in the summer, another hatchery lost hundreds of grayling and rainbow trout in a Fairbanks lake where water temperatures reached 76 degrees. Alaska’s heat wave broke records last week, with 14 days straight above 70 degrees in Anchorage and 31 days of 80 degrees in Fairbanks.

Officials cited a number of factors affecting the fish, but observed that the die-off coincided with the hottest weather of the season. While die-offs are not uncommon, Doug Fleming, a sportfish biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, suggested the magnitude of the die-off was surprising.

“And so, getting through till Wednesday which appeared to be the hottest day, then on Thursday I was conducting an aerial survey just to get a grip on how many fish may have been killed by the warm water, not expecting to see a large die-off but some, and I was shocked to see the numbers of fish that we lost,” he told the Associated Press.

Besides the sheer heat, lack of rainfall is also contributing to the die-off. Many streams are too low to accommodate the fish waiting at the mouths, which essentially suffocate as more fish get backed up. The enormous salmon die-off in July was partly because large numbers of fish were trapped at the shallow Blind Slough rapids.

Alaska’s commercial fisheries are among the largest in the world. Salmon is the state’s largest export product after oil and natural gas.

While Alaska’s heat wave is expected to subside soon, the state has warmed up twice as fast as the rest of the nation in the past 50 years, and climate change is worsening extreme weather. Wildfires raged through subarctic forests as late as Friday, consuming more than a million acres and prompting emergency evacuations across the state. Thawing permafrost is also sinking villages, threatening fish stocks and water supplies that the communities rely on to survive.

8/15/13

People Fuzhou, August 15 (Reporter Zhang Zhibin) on the 15th morning, friends, Chen Hailing micro-Bo said, Fuzhou Yongtai Song Town Dongpo village farmers, due to water by processing Li Chien (candied) workshop sewage contamination caused a lot of fish deaths.  Yongtai Song Town responded that the exclusion of sewage pollution, the initial judgment based Pan Tong cause of dead fish ponds hypoxia phenomenon.

Worth hundreds of thousands of fish large number of deaths, claimed that due to water contamination by the upstream Lee dry workshop

"Seeing so bleached year's income, loss of more than ten million." Chen Hailing in micro-Bo said, told local government departments to report, "but I do not know for what reason, just take a more lukewarm manner."

Chen Hailing reflected in Yongtai County Department of Punta lotus ponds in the reservoir, it is understood that the reservoir catchment area of 0.46 square kilometers, with a total capacity of 113,900 cubic meters, is a set of flood control, irrigation utilization of the small (2) reservoir.  Chen Hailing sister introduced in the interview with this site, they are long-term contract to the reservoir for aquaculture, but in the upper reaches of the reservoir is a Li Chien workshop recently because the sewage tanks damaged and sewage into the reservoir, resulting in farmed fish appear death of large areas.

"Last year, a similar phenomenon of dead fish also occur due to loss of only a few thousand dollars, Li Chien workshop leader admitted that its emissions caused by sewage and make compensation. Loss of hundreds of thousands this year, Li Chien workshop responsible person refused to pay compensation." Chen Hailing sister told reporters, as of the 14th, ponds where the fish have all died.

According to Chen Hailing sister introduced, as at 18:00 on the 15th around, "upstream of the reservoir that home Lee workshops are busy doing a lot of candied fruit into large trucks for the transfer, this preserves factory belongs to operating without a license."

Hypoxia is a fish pond to determine the initial cause of dead fish pond pan

Song Town People's Government responded that, on August 13, Song Town Dongpo village of village cadres in the library patrol discovered a strange fish, immediately inform the farmers Chen Chuanqin to hedge against.  14 morning, after receiving Chen Chuanqin reflect lotus raising fish in the reservoir after the death of a large number, town, village cadres to look first at the scene and contact Yongtai County Animal Husbandry Bureau of fishery law enforcement unit to send experts to investigate.  15, Yongtai County Public Security Bureau of Interpol team, security team sent the survey sample, has ruled out the possibility of poisoning.

According to Song Town investigation and analysis, the large area of dead fish ponds recent phenomenon causes an initial judgment led to dead fish pond fish pond pan hypoxia phenomenon, the specific reasons need to wait for the test results.

Song Town, said in response, one recent Fuzhou continuous high temperature, long time no rainfall, resulting in high temperature reservoirs, no running water into the reservoirs hypoxia; Second silt long uncleaned, farmers Chen Chuanqin farming about seven years, not regularly clean up the sludge pond, farmers will unfermented manure into the pool, resulting in water too fat, silt and more, cause a variety of microbial fermentation, resulting in changes in water quality.

Lee just pickled dry mill pond, Yongtai demanding the plant sewage treatment

Song Town In response to the question that the dead fish ponds, farmers Chen Zhuanqin a few days ago has been found that a small amount of dead fish phenomenon, 13 village cadres in the library patrol discovered a strange fish, immediately inform the farmers Chen Chuanqin to hedge against.  But Chen Chuanqin not vigilant and timely through the use of oxygen equipment, evacuation density, etc., to effectively control the damage.

Song Town in its response, farmers farmer Li Chen Chuanqin suspected cause dry mill effluent reservoir mass mortality of fish, according to preliminary view that the workshop is only pickled pool, engaged Lee embryo roughing, the family workshop, no major scale production.

Song Town stressed Yongtai County as a tourist, the plant's wastewater treatment capacity requirements are very stringent, such as candied enterprises are concentrated in Changqing town built 80 tons of sewage treatment Shunda Food sewage treatment plants and sewage treatment 350 tons of Tamai Square sewage treatment plant.  In this regard, Song Town has proposed to Fujian farmers Testing Center (Industrial Road, near the old Fuzhou University) identification.

Song Town also said that municipalities continue to focus on something dynamic, pre-organized personnel to farms, to clean up the dead fish on the library, deep processing, is expected to be cleared tomorrow.  Note also urge other livestock farmers safety.

Dordogne, France: thousands of dead fish, likely natural causes
8/20/13

Périgueux (AFP) - Thousands of fish, more than a ton in total were killed in recent days in a pond Dordogne, a rare phenomenon and most likely of natural origin, it was learned Monday from several sources .

From last Tuesday, dead fish, pike, carp and tench in particular, have accumulated on the surface of the pond Born, a water of fifteen popular with fishing enthusiasts Salagnac hectares in north of the Dordogne.

According to the president of the Federation of Fishing Dordogne, Jean-Marie RAMPNOUX this sudden death, which had already produced locally years ago, is of natural origin.

"There have been very high temperatures before the storms, and thunderstorms brought a lot of water and suspended solids, vegetation such. These materials decomposing took all the oxygen in the water, and fish died from lack of oxygen, "he said in an AFP correspondent.

He said that the situation was recently returned to normal, and the nature and crayfish congeners, would handle dead fish.

The services of the State, in conjunction with the Federation of fisheries, are thus not involved in the handling of the incident, it was said at the prefecture.

Water pollution causes the death of thousands of fish in Avenches(Switzerland)

Thousands of fish were found dead due to pollution of the Black Water, near Avenches (VD), caused by a technical problem at the treatment plant.

Thousands of fish were found dead in the stream of black water near Avenches in the canton of Vaud.  Pollution of rivers occurred this weekend is due to a technical problem (STEP) wastewater treatment plant located on the banks of the water flowing into Lake Murten.

A short circuit prevented the alarm to start.  Approximately 1,500 m3 of wastewater are discharged into the black and Water contaminating wildlife place, including a dozen species of fish, including a majority of cyprinids.  The wastewater is discharged directly into the stream and in two ponds and finally into the lake, told the ATS Philippe Savary, permanent storage fishing Vaud.

A study of water samples is ongoing and the results are expected Wednesday.  Meanwhile, the municipality of Avenches recommend, as a precaution, to bathe in the lake of Morat.

More than 20 tons of fish die from the heat in a lake in Slovenia
8/13/13

Zagreb, Aug 13 (EFE). - Due to the extraordinary heat, more than 20 tons of fish perished last week in Lake Pernisko, protected natural park in northwestern Slovenia, according to Slovenian news agency STA.

The Slovenian Institute for Fisheries has determined that the high temperatures, which in many places in this country skiing broke records last week to reach 40 degrees Celsius, also caused a lack of oxygen and no other causes of mass death, despite other initial suspicion.

Furthermore, water is heated by non-renewal greatly since Pesnica river has almost dried.

The stench of dead animals on the shores of Lake located east of Maribor became unbearable, and the authorities and the population still have not cleaned the entire area.

The newspaper "Dnevnik" ensures that the local early warning that the disaster of the fish, and occurred three years ago could happen again, and that could be prevented with appropriate measures.

These were not taken due to litigation concerning jurisdiction over the lake between the State Agency for Environment and ARS association, responsible for highways and environment
.

STA ensures that the responsibility to monitor the welfare of wildlife in this area still borne by the ARS, meanwhile, claims to have returned to the environmental agency.  EFE

8/11/13
Bleeding herring discovery alarms B.C. marine biologist

Scores of bloodied fish found in the water off northeastern Vancouver Island are alarming a B.C. marine biologist, who says Fisheries and Oceans Canada is ignoring the problem.

Vancouver Island marine biologist Alexandra Morton first spotted herrings bleeding from their dorsal and pelvic fins in 2011 and began monitoring the phenomenon, which she suspects is a disease or viral infection.

Using a seine net, she dragged up several hundred of the fish this past weekend and found the apparent infection had spread —instead of their usual silver colour the fish had eyes, tails, underbellies, gills and faces plastered with the sickly red colour.

“I have never seen fish that looked this bad,” Morton told 24 hours Sunday. “If you look only in one place, you really can’t say whether it’s happening along the whole coast … the concern is these are migratory fish. They don’t stay in one place.

In June, the affected fish were only found in eastern Johnstone Strait, but have since spread to Alert Bay and Sointula, she said. Humpback whales, eagles, chinook and coho salmon are known to eat Pacific herring, further adding to the risk should the infection be contagious.

Morton has several theories, including three European-based viruses she’ll be personally testing the fish for. Another theory is it’s caused by the local viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus — a deadly disease transferable between different species.

According to emails from FOC, the federal authority had asked the marine biologist to send in 20 to 30 herring in September 2011, saying that would be “more than sufficient for the lab to look for clinical signs of disease and provide sufficient diagnostics.”

She did, and hasn’t heard back since
.

“These are very strong disease symptoms that I’m simply asking (the ministry) to tell us, in a verifiable way, what is wrong with these fish?” Morton said, adding the answer could be found using an existing test that examines the immune systems of fish.

FOC officials did not respond to a request for comment by the 24 hours presstime.

http://www.nbcnews.com/science/hundreds-dolphins-may-die-east-coast-killer-identified-6C10953954?ocid=msnhp&pos=4
8/20/13
Hundreds of dolphins may die on East Coast before killer is identified

A silent, mysterious plague is claiming the lives of scores of bottlenose dolphins off the mid-Atlantic coast. Over July and August so far, 228 dead or dying dolphins have washed up on beaches from New Jersey to Virginia, and the numbers continue to climb.

The dead include adult animals and calves, males and females. Sometimes, the animals that wash ashore are dead for days. Others arrive on their last breath. None have survived.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has formally classified the mass deaths as an "Unusual Mortality Event." The daily arrival of dead dolphins is an ominous sign of a larger, ailing coastal ecosystem, researchers say. It could even signal the return of a deadly sickness that raged for 10 months in the late 1980s, and felled more than 700 bottlenoses before the carnage ended.

"We started getting really alarmed by July 25, when we started getting more than one animal per day. That was the tipping point," Susan Barco, a researcher at the Virginia Aquarium Marine Mammal Center, told NBC News.

August usually brings about seven strandings to the Virginia shores, but this month, with two weeks to go, Barco has already counted 75 dead dolphins. And calls about new strandings are flooding in daily. "There are days when we cannot get off the phone," she said. "Everyone loves dolphins ... they're certainly concerned."

Of the world's 600,000 dolphins, up to 22,800 coastal migrators — some heading south, to the Carolinas for the winter, and others heading north — are expected to pass through the mid-Atlantic in the summer and fall. "We are worried that ... the elevated strandings will not stop until the dolphins leave our area," Barco said.

Researchers across the U.S. have rallied to support the investigation, at labs, at stranding sites, and at other remote locations. If volunteers find a recently dead animal — a carcass in good shape — they drive them to the aquarium lab facility. There, a team of three or four researchers works for about seven hours collecting swabs, tissue samples, body fluids — material that can be probed for viral or bacterial pathogens. Genetic tests are also on the to-do list.

From whole animals, Barco has recorded respiratory infections, joint infections, skin and mouth lesions. Some animals appear emaciated, as if they suddenly went off their food. But the real killer — likely a bacteria or virus of some kind — is still at large.

Prime suspect: Morbillivirus
Chief among the suspected "causal agents" is the morbillivirus, a bug that turned up in the tissue of one dead New Jersey dolphin. It's still too early to say if the virus killed that animal, much less the rest of the herds.

Morbillivirus does have a track record, however. This virus was behind another mass die-off that claimed the lives of more than 700 dolphins between June 1987 and March 1988. The morbillivirus in that event wasn't found until years later, but the experts say technological progress will help identify the cause faster in this case.

How did those dolphins get so sick a quarter century ago? One theory, Barco explained, is that the coast-dwelling dolphin population caught the virus through exchanging breathed air or body fluids with dolphins that live in deeper waters. The offshore herds are believed to harbor the virus without getting ill from it, unlike their unfortunate coastal cousins.

"Looking at this event from 10,000 feet in the air, it looks much the same as 1987," Charles Potter, collections manager of marine mammals at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. But, he added, further tests are needed "before we can say if this a repeat or if this is just something that looks similar."

Because of the NOAA Unusual Mortality Event classification, dolphin experts have access to a deeper pool of funding for tools, equipment and salaries for investigation. But budgetary belts are tighter than ever, and this doesn't mean carte blanche. Currently, there is $200,000 available in funding for seven open cases, said one NOAA marine biologist. This mass death is just one of those cases.

Though fatigue is already setting in, experienced marine biologists know this may only be the beginning. Potter, who also helped research the 1980s die off, traveled down to the Virginia Aquarium to help with dolphin necropsies. "All of us would hope that this mortality would just cease. But I don't think it's going to happen," Potter said.

A few weeks in, with a long fall ahead, the work is already taking a toll on the humans involved. "We are alarmed and concerned and exhausted," Barco said.

Lack of oxygen: The fish die Gudme Lake

Lack of oxygen has beaten all fish in Gudme Lake death.

Gudme: A cold-blooded massacre in the animal world has unfolded in Gudme Lake.

In the water's edge lies dead fish neatly in straight rows with open mouths, big, surprised eyes and bloated bellies.  The waves get fiskekadaverne to rock from side to side while each zombie similar shells splash with their fins in a last attempt to survive.  It should prove unsuccessful.

The fish have been asphyxiated in a swamp of algae.  The algae is due to summer heat and windless conditions have made the nutrient-rich lake completely green and depleted oxygen.

If the lake is cleaned, there is in principle not much to compete against fish death to come, and something similar could happen in such Ollerup and Soerup Lake.

Thousands of fish killed by collapse of mining waste in Ecuador

The Environmental Management Unit of the Municipality of Ponce Enriquez, warned the general public not to use the river water affected "under any circumstances"

8/17/13

A Shumiral mining tailings, Ecuador, collapsed this week sending all waste to waters of Chico River, which joins the course of Gala, Tenguel and Pagua, which flow into the shrimp and mangroves.

The president of the Vestry of Tenguel, Julio Simbala warned on August 15 that in his jurisdiction were thousands of dead fish, as The Time .

The facts involve the mining Portugalia, head to Barranco Colorado Duck in Shumiral, Camilo Ponce Enriquez Canton, Azuay Province.  Furthermore, the Ministry is investigating the responsibility of new discharges upstream of the site of the tragedy.  The collapse of a wall of the pool was recorded about 18:00 on Tuesday August 13. Is an "environmental tragedy" said Patricio Sanchez, mayor of Ponce Enriquez, noting that over 13 hectares is evidence the mud swept away everything in its path and affected villages using water for their activities, reported Ecuavisa .

The Ministry Ambienta l told the inhabitants, including the communities of San Rafael, Parish Tenguel, Guayas Province, "to take the necessary precautions such as avoiding the use of river water for agriculture and human consumption, given that do not know the content of it, "he said in a statement.

The Environmental Management Unit of the Municipality of Ponce Enriquez, warned the general public not to use the water of the rivers mentioned "under any circumstances", La Hora.

The Ministry indicated that water samples were taken "in some sectors of the Chico River in order to know which components are part of tailings discharged into the river" to determine the extent of contamination and provenance.

 Sustained swimming bags

"The collapse of the side wall of the pool meant that the material is the Chico River, spreading downstream. One of the immediate actions taken was divert the river to prevent the material from being dragged cyanide allegedly by it" informed the Ministry of Environment, and warned that it was ordered to build a dam between the land affected and it will be in front.

Alexandre Benposta, Portugalia shareholder, told the media that this mineral waste spill is a "sabotage" reported Ecuavisa.

The Director of Environment of Azuay, were Torrachi, told The Hour, which handles this "hypothesis of sabotage," but that is something that is going to investigate. "Turn explained that by the time the grant activities mining were suspended.

In response, President of the Vestry of Tenguel, Julio Simbala, said the average Ecuadorian, who does not believe that the spill was an alleged sabotage and presumes the concessionaire, "because according to the leader who inspected the area of the collapse, the pool was built anti technically, since these residues were supported by sacks ".

Witnesses reported that upstream of the spill area, this water down showing a silver color. To rule out that the companies in the Cold Creek and Bella Gal, took the affectation to empty your waste pits until late afternoon yesterday, were inspected.

6 more dolphins found dead on southern N.J. beaches

Six more dolphins have been found dead on New Jersey beaches in recent days, bringing the total to 52 since July 9.

Officials say severely decomposed dolphins washed up Saturday in Barnegat Light and Long Beach Township, both in Ocean County, and in Upper Township in Cape May County. That came one day after dolphins washed up in Seaside Heights in Ocean County, Longport in Atlantic County and Stone Harbor in Cape May County,

State officials have been working with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine to determine why so many dolphins are dying.

The federal government has also been investigating the cause of dolphin deaths up and down the Eastern Seaboard this summer, exploring many possible causes such as disease, changes in the environment and human activities.

Environmentalists denounce death of 80 turtles in Guatemala

About 80 turtles have been found dead in seven Pacific beaches (south) of Guatemala since last July, reported on Monday that Guatemalan environmental mortality attributed to shrimp fishing in the region.

"From the first week of July to date, have been sighted about 80 dead sea turtles," which "coincides with the presence of shrimp boats in waters off these beaches," he said in a statement nongovernmental Rescue and Conservation Association Wildlife (Arcas).

"It is clearly documented that the practice of trawl fishing is a threat to sea turtles," explained the organization conservacionsita in the press release.

According to Arcas, people settled in the Guatemalan Pacific Coast located 72 dead ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea), seven black turtles (Chelonia mydas agazzisi) and one of the species leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea).

"These last two species (are) critically threatened with extinction worldwide," explains the report.

Conservationists and researchers in Guatemala environmentalists urged the government to restrict fishing of shrimp to "establish the impact of economic activity on marine turtle populations," the statement added.

According to the text, controlled gatherers turtle eggs are concerned about the deaths threaten their livelihood.

"These species are a valuable resource to be alive, both as a tourist attraction and a source of income by collecting eggs under a program that allows the collection of eggs, provided they deliver 20 percent of each nest Local a turtle
", the statement added.

For its part, the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for fishing in Guatemala, investigates "the real cause" of the death of turtles, local media said Sebastian Marcucci, assistant director of that institution.

In El Salvador, the environmental authorities investigate whether toxic microalgae are responsible for the death of a dozen sea turtles located in the last two weeks on the Pacific coast of that country.

They investigate the death of 21 turtles in 15 days

MARN believed that the cause has been a concentration of microalgae in deep water

8/9/13

Boats?, Algae or contamination?  Whatever the cause for which 21 turtles have been found dead on two beaches Abroad in a span of 15 days, the fact has not gone unnoticed.

Conservationists suspect that industrial fishing is the cause, while MARN technicians investigate whether a concentration of algae 80 nautical miles offshore has led to the phenomenon.

Michael Liles, the Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (ICAPO) confirmed that authorities have contacted those involved in conservation projects to call to report any findings.  "I think they want to go and take tissue samples for analysis," he said.

Enrique Barraza, MARN, said the turtle tissue will be analyzed in a laboratory at the University of El Salvador and also analyze water samples for the presence of toxins.

In July, in the Bay of Jaquilisco, Liles recorded three hawksbill turtle deaths.  He confirmed that the toxicity of some algae can kill turtles, but thought to die more because of boats beaten or caught in their nets.

"The biggest threat are industrial vessels who walk there in front (of the beach). Lets say about 20 to 10 come ashore dead by a red tide that's like a typical week with shrimp boats," he says.

The deaths have set in motion MARN technicians occurred in two beaches Abroad: Monte Ball and Garita Palmera.  Wildlife manager, Nestor Herrera, explained that so far this year there have been 41 deaths of turtles, of which those recorded in these beaches equal to 50%.  Herrera explained that most strandings occur between July and October, so the number may increase.

He noted that there are multiple causes.  Among the reported cases there are four victims of bycatch and six kidney problems.

 A regional phenomenon

Monte Ball and Garita Palmera are near the border with Guatemala, where the National Protected Areas Commission has registered 80 dead turtles.

Since the first week of July, 54 turtles were reported by the Rescue and Conservation Association Wildlife (Areas) in the neighboring country.

The findings occurred on the beaches: The Barrona, Las Lisas, Flange and Hawaii.  Among the specimens had 46 ridleys turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea), seven black turtles (Chelonia mydas agazzisi) and a leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea).

"The loss of these two species is especially painful given their status in critically endangered," the association said in its Facebook page.

From this association noted that cases coincide with the presence of sea-water shrimp boats off the beaches Guatemalan mentioned.

"It is well documented that the practice of trawling is a threat to sea turtles", they say.  So, prepare to ask the government to cope with mortality of turtles and watch the shrimp boats to determine their impact on sea turtle populations.

If necessary, ask to establish a ban to protect turtles in the breeding season.

Elsewhere in Central America, on August 7, the Supreme Court of Costa Rica ruled unconstitutional trawling.

The judges considered that it has been scientifically proven that this technique "causes serious harm to the marine environment, due to the amount of marine life that is incidentally captured but not used".

The director of the Zoological Foundation of El Salvador (Funzel), Rodrigo Samayoa Valiente urges to determine the cause of death of the turtles.

The latest death reported by Funzel corresponds to an adult Olive Ridley turtle, which was found in the Barra de Santiago.  By asking the autopsy, it was found that the turtle had a kidney infection.  "I think we have a very strong pollution problem," said Samayoa Valiente.

Better than Bigfoot: Rare ragfish washes up on Lena Beach(Alaska)

Lacking scales and bones, these fish can reach a whopping 7 feet long

Although this gnarly fish isn’t uncommon in Alaska waters, it’s rare that one of them makes an appearance on shore, especially in Juneau. A dead ragfish, scientific name Icosteus aenigmaticus, washed up on Lena Beach early this month, Juneau resident Michael Hays told us.

It was longer than a shovel, battered and looking less than appealing. However, this particular specimen is small for its size — ragfish can reach an astounding 7 feet in length, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration biologist Dave Csepp said.

The fish are widespread throughout Alaska waters off the Bering Sea slope, hanging out deep, around 1,420 meters. However, they’re not as common near Juneau — NOAA’s Auke Bay Laboratories usually only get a few sightings of the fish each year, Csepp said in an email. They’re most commonly caught in trawl nets or while trolling, and not very often found on beaches.

Yet another, larger fish, was found earlier this year. Mary Willson and Richard Carstensen encountered a dead ragfish in February, also on Lena Beach.

Although they don’t look it, ragfish are floppy and limp like a rag, hence their name, Csepp said. These fish have mainly cartilaginous skeletons, and if you tried to bop one on the head with a salmon club, the club would go straight through. Ragfish have no scales, NOAA’s Julie Speegle said. Their bodies are soft, their skin not unlike a squid’s: a dark top layer can be easily removed to reveal smooth, white flesh underneath, Csepp said. They feed on small fish and cephalopods, and are food for sperm whales.

Besides what we know about the ragfish’s colossal size and bizarre anatomy, not much is known about this species, Csepp said.

Thousands of dead fish floating in Pascagoula, MS
Posted: Aug 19, 2013 6:22 PM CDT

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -
Thousands of fish are dead in Bayou Casotte forcing the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to close the bayou and part of the Mississippi Sound. MDEQ is also advising people to not eat any seafood from the area until further notice.

Mississippi Phosphates said a release of water from the plant led to the fish kill.

Owner of CC's Bait Shop Charles Williamson Jr. said, "If I continue taking hits like that, I can't stay in business."

He said every time the water is contaminated, his business suffers. This time Williamson lost 65 pounds of shrimp.

"It will take me about a week to get my stock back up because we haven't been catching a lot of shrimp," Williamson said. "So all that shrimp I had was four days worth of work. That's four days of burning diesel, four days paying help."

Five months ago another fish kill forced MDEQ to again close the boat ramps, causing him to lose about $5,000 in bait and business.

"It has just been a hard, uphill battle," Williamson said.

He is not the only one frustrated.

"Financially, I am at a loss," commercial crabber Brandon Pierpont said. "It is pushing all the crab out into the channel and everything that can get out is trying to. And what's left in here, like I said, I'm real low on numbers and had a lot of dead loss."

"For years, they say vegetation on the bank, depletion of the oxygen in the water. But look, you can only fool people so many times. It just continues to happen, so something needs to be done about it," fisherman Fred Waters said.

Mississippi Phosphates said the heavy rain Sunday forced the company to do an emergency discharge of processing water into Bayou Casotte to avoid an even larger uncontrolled release.

Williamson said the company should at least give some notice to those who make a living off the bayou.

"They need to give me a call, so I can shut off all my pumps and save the water I got and continue selling my live bait. That would be the neighborly thing to do," Williamson said.
