More dolphins found dead along Jersey Shore

Two more dolphins have turned up dead along New Jersey beaches.

Officials with the Brigantine-based Marine Mammal Stranding Center tell The Press of Atlantic City that the dolphins were found Saturday in Sea Girt and Brigantine. That brings the statewide total to 68 since July 9.

The deaths have been declared an "unusual mortality event" by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration due to the significant number of dolphins found between New York and Virginia.

From New Jersey south to Virginia, more than 230 dolphin deaths have been reported. Although officials have said the dolphins appear to be dying from viral pneumonia, a precise cause is still unknown.

A bottlenose dolphin that washed up earlier this month tested positive for morbillivirus, but officials said it was too early to tell if that is the culprit in the other deaths.

"We're not saying that this is a morbillivirus outbreak," Teri Rowles, NOAA's national marine mammal stranding coordinator, said at the time. "But because of the size of it right now, everybody's making that link at this point. But that is not a confirmed diagnosis or cause of this event at this point."

Kiev pigeons en masse mows a mysterious disease
August 22, 2013

In Kiev is getting more sick pigeons.  On the streets often you can see the dead or very sickly birds.  According to TSN , usually animated birds became lethargic: throws his head back, walk unsteadily.

In Kiev crawl rumors that pigeon flocks are even up in the air and can not ever fall under the wheels of cars.  Dead birds found on lawns and roadways.

A few weeks ago in Moscow started a real pigeon plague .  As Russia began to die poultry from Newcastle disease, also called the psevdochumoy.  Significant signs of weakness, cramps, mucus in the mouth, bulging eyes with conjunctivitis.  In Kiev zoo does not exclude that the Newcastle disease can strike and our feathered.  Although no such cases in Kiev registered.  In the zoo, to insure against the virus, which can theoretically bring here the wild pigeons, birds are vaccinated and are constantly being watched.

If the behavior of pigeons strange and alarming, experts recommend no contact with them, and especially not to the children.  The virus can be transmitted even with the dust.

While veterinarians deny pigeon epidemic, the people of Kiev they have their own version of bird deaths.  Like, pigeons are killed because eat poison for homeless dogs.  The capital's street cleaners have really started to pick up more dead birds than usual.  Blame only the laws of nature, because the survival of the fittest.  At the same time sanitary requirements operates pigeons and they really can be carriers of various infections.

900 fish died in the lake

Hellum: Mill Lake in Hellum has in recent weeks been a sad sight. Local citizens have collected 900 dead fish, mainly trout out of the lake. On the city's Facebook page debatable issue, and several dishes accusations against the municipality. Hellum citizens believe the fish died due to oxygen deficiency which has occurred since the city has been looking Hellum brook outside the lake. Brook running water oxygenated lake. Asger Nielsen, head of department of environment, water and nature in Frederikshavn Municipality confirms that it must be bad with Mill Sea. - We know there has been a bottom reversal in the lake. It happens when it's really hot and oxygen concentration in stagnant water, explains Asger Nielsen.

The belly in the air

This year, the summer heat in a short time after the lake was "disconnected" pelvis, and the effect was dramatically when hundreds of fish turned belly up. It has never been understood that the pelvis should be associated with the lake. - When you get permission to restore a lake, you get it on the condition that there must be space between the lake and streams. The terms also applied in Hellum, but when the lake was cleaned up, one came to dig too close to the pelvic says Asger Nielsen. Experience elsewhere shows that the oxygen-sensitive trout struggle to succeed in a shallow lake, even though the lake is connected with a watercourse.

 Fish could have been saved

- At one time or another go wrong. The lake gets a ruseeffekt and trout are caught. The lake also destroys the natural environment in the river, explains Asger Nielsen. Trout in Hellum Møllesø could be rescued. - I will not deny that we could have pulled seines, if we had known there were so many trout in the lake. It is quite a costly affair, but we might have got the locals to help, says Asger Nielsen, adding: - It was not our view that there were so many trout that were caught in the lake. We are also tired of it.

Fish are found dead in creek in rural Itajai
8/22/13

An environmental crime may have caused the death of thousands of fish in a creek in rural Itajaí.  The animals were found dead on the morning of Thursday.  Many have washed away, but some were in the margins.

Locals noticed changes in the water still in the creek late Wednesday.  Hermelindo Lourenço Gomes noted that on the same day was too much foam in the creek.  One of the suspicions of the population is that the domestic sewage that is dumped daily in the stream may have caused the death of fish.

According to the Environment Foundation, the reason this is certainly not, otherwise there would be dead fish every day, which is not true.  For technical coordinator Famai, Carlos Alberto Rebelo, some chemical must have caused the damage.  If proven environmental crime, the official will have to pay a fine and suspend the activities that caused the damage.

Stench of rotting fish keeps park visitors at bay
8/21/13

REPULSIVE: Ampang Hilir Lake Garden regulars have stopped going to the scenic spot after thousands of fish were found dead in and around the lake

KUALA LUMPUR: THE recent discovery of dead fish at the scenic Ampang Hilir Lake Garden has raised concerns among park goers and residents in the area.

The fish were first discovered by a group of park goers on the second week of the fasting month. They said the unbearable stench had forced them to abandoned their visits there.

This was not the first such incident at the lake as there had been similar incidents, dating back to 2009. A Streets check found that the edge of the lake covered with algae and garbage. There was also a strong stench coming from the lake. However, we saw no dead fish as they had been cleared away.

A jogger, who wanted to be known only as Din, said that City Hall should be more proactive in carrying out maintenance at the lake.

"Many people frequent the lake daily. City Hall should ensure that the place is well kept," he said.

A City Hall worker, who declined to be named, said that the dead fish were cleared away after the supervisor of the park was informed of the matter.

"It took four days for the workers to clear all the dead fish. They had to go around the lake in a small boat to collect all the rotting fish," he said.

The worker also said that there had been numerous complaints from park goers about the foul smell of rotting fish.

"We can only dispose of the fish and hope that the smell will eventually go away," he said.

Former American Chamber of Commerce president Nicholas S. Zefferys wrote a letter to the New Straits Times recently about how the lake, an abandoned tin mine, was subsequently filled with water and seeded with fish.

"City Hall had built a delightful walkway and facilities for residents and trekkers.

"Today, this lake is cesspool of hundreds of dead fish floating on the surface amid a thick film of sewage, decay and rot.

"The stench is so bad we have discontinued our walks there, as our clothes became infused with the odour. No one walks there now except the hardy or indifferent," he wrote.

A spokesman for City Hall said that the dry season was killing the fish.

"There are 10 inlets which are connected to the lake and one outlet that channels the water out of the lake. During the dry season, the water level subsides causing the level to drop below the outlet
.

When this happens the water cannot be channelled out and as a result, the lake begins to collect garbage and contaminated water," he said.

The spokesman said that City Hall will be monitoring the lake garden. "We have already engaged a contractor to clean up the lake and start water treatment. As a long-term measure, we will be building a reservoir to treat the water that is channelled into the lake," he said.

Hundreds of Dead Fish Surface in Agoura Hills Lake

The fish apparently died of oxygen deprivation due to an algae bloom in the water.

Wednesday, Aug 21, 2013

A massive cleanup was underway at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills after hundreds of dead fish turned up in its waters -- at least 200 fish were seen belly-up drifing toward concrete banks.

In the past several days, something has been taking a chunk out of the lake’s fish population, including carp.

Residents sent NBC4 photos of the "fish kill" that they began noticing on Sunday.

"It can’t be healthy for kids around here. Can’t be healthy for adults," said Mark Odney, a Lake Lindero resident.

"Golf Projects Lindero" is the company that operates the lake’s country club. Its president, David V. Smith told residents they are not to panic.

"I would just ask homeowners to understand that this is something we are trying to address," he said.

Smith added that the kill is an unfortunate consequence of a dredging project earlier this year. If 5,000 yards of silt are pulled out of the lake, it kicks up nutrients from the bottom, he said. And, if hot weather is added to that, it results in an algae bloom.

"When algae blooms, then of course, it sucks oxygen out of the lake," Smith said.

The fish went lifeless after suffocating in the oxygen-depleted water. The solution is to kill the algae slowly with chemicals, but that may take a few weeks.

"It’s turned into a cesspool," Odney said.

Angry residents said they are "raising a stink" over the issue because they just can’t stand the stench of the dead fish.

Meantime, the lake's management company told NBC4 that it can’t kill all of the algae at once because that would kill more fish than it would save.

Virus likely causing dolphin deaths, NOAA says

Virus likely causing dolphin deaths

8/27/13

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the cetacean morbillivirus is the likely cause of hundreds of dolphin deaths on the East Coast.

NORFOLK, Va. — Federal officials identified a virus Tuesday as the likely reason hundreds of bottlenose dolphins died along the East Coast, but they say there's little they can do to stop the deaths.

More than 330 dolphins have been stranded between New York and North Carolina since July 1, with nearly all of them dead by the time they wash up on shore, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

That's more than nine times the historical average for dolphin strandings in the region during July and August.

"Along the Atlantic seaboard, this is extraordinary," Teri Rowles, NOAA Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program coordinator, said in a conference call with reporters.

Earlier this month, NOAA declared an unusual mortality event so it could provide additional resources to study what was behind the rapid increase in deaths — more than half of which have occurred in Virginia. At the time, they suspected the cetacean morbillivirus was causing the deaths, just as it did during the last major dolphin die-off. In 1987 and 1988, the virus was blamed for causing 740 dolphin deaths between New Jersey and Florida.

Although research will continue, NOAA said it has collected enough evidence to declare the virus as the "tentative cause" in the most recent string of deaths as well. Morbillivirus is found in a broad range of mammals, and dolphins with it typically experience symptoms such as skin lesions, brain infections and pneumonia. The virus is usually spread through inhalation of respiratory particles or direct contact between animals, although officials said there's no risk of humans catching it. Bottlenose dolphins are typically found in groups of two to 15.

"At this point there isn't anything we can do to stop the virus," Rowles said. "We don't have a vaccine that is developed that could be easily deployed in a wild population of bottlenose dolphins or subpopulations."

Officials at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center said many of the dolphins washing up on the state's beaches are badly decomposed. State and federal officials say there are untold numbers of other dolphins that have also died and haven't washed ashore, likely making the total death count much higher.

"We've definitely gotten reports of floating carcasses that we were not able to recover — and there are plenty of those," said Margaret Lynott, the aquarium's stranding coordinator.

Using the 1980s die-off as a guide, officials believe the disease and strandings will spread south and last through the spring of 2014. Eventually, remaining dolphins will become more resistant to the disease, just as they have before. Bottlenose dolphins typically live between 40 and 50 years, but a new generation of dolphins will also likely become susceptible to the disease again in the future.

There are two different stocks of dolphins that populate the affected region, with the northern stock having between 7,000 and 9,000 dolphins, while the southern stock has between 9,900 to 12,000 dolphins, according to federal estimates.

For second time in a month, dead fish wash ashore(Pakistan)
8/27/13

Something’s terribly wrong at the seashore. For the second time within a month, a large number of dead fish have washed ashore in Karachi

While the quantity of fish is quite small as compared to the last time, fisheries’ experts believe the mass killing this time has been caused by “red tide” – a natural phenomenon which occurs due to the immense growth of marine algae usually in coastal waters.

Red tides, locally termed “mara paani” (in Sindhi) and “bad aab” (in Baloch language), can produce natural toxins or deplete dissolved oxygen, resulting in the death of marine and coastal species of fish and even sometimes birds and marine mammals.

On August 5, around 100 metric tonnes of dead fish, mainly grey mullets, had washed ashore on the beaches of Karachi between Baba Island and Chinna Creek. The mortalities were attributed to the toxic rainwater flowing in the sea from Lyari River, which flows through the industrial areas.

This time, a small quantity of dead fish, including tigertooth croaker, mullets, terapons, scat and seabreams, have been beaching in patches along the Clifton beach since Saturday.

While the dead fish have been attributed to red tide, the reason for the sudden growth of algae is not well understood, experts at World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF) said on Monday.

“But the recurring mortality of natural fish stocks may severely affect the livelihood of the fishermen in the coastal areas,” pointed out WWF-Pakistan Director Rab Nawaz.Fish deaths on account of toxic phytoplankton can be widespread and direct or indirect consumption of such organisms can be harmful for humans.

The WWF-Pakistan has collected samples of the dead fish for analysis to identify the species of phytoplankton causing mass mortality.Moazzam Khan, the marine fisheries technical adviser at WWF-Pakistan, said abrupt growth of toxic phytoplankton was known as “harmful algal bloom”.

Phytoplankton is not harmful to humans and marine animals. But owing to a number of reasons, some of which are still not well understood, these algae grow in millions changing the colour of the water ranging from green to blood red.

Red tides are a regular occurrence in Pakistani waters often resulting in mass mortality of fish. Khalid Mahmood, the co-principal investigator, and Saba Ayub, the data enumerator at WWF-Pakistan, who surveyed the area pointed out that fish mortality was widespread along the entire Clifton coast, mainly at Do Darya and Sea View but the quantities were not large.

Most of the dead fish have already been collected for fish meal processors. Khan was concerned that use of such fish for fish meal and human consumption could lead to serious health issues.

He pointed out the WWF-Pakistan was working with the National Institute of Oceanography to identify the species of phytoplankton responsible for fish mortality. The first such record in Pakistani waters dates back to the 13th century. A red tide in 1906 resulted in the elimination of the entire stock of oysters from waters of Sindh.

The WWF-Pakistan has urged research organisations to keep an eye on the appearance of harmful algal blooms and set up a regular monitoring system as some of these blooms can be harmfully toxic and may lead to serious health issues.

Elk herd found dead in northeastern N.M.

State biologists are trying to unravel a mystery of what killed a herd of elk in northeastern New Mexico.

More than 100 elk found were dead on a ranch about 20 miles north of Las Vegas this week.

Sky News 13 flew over the gruesome discovery on the sprawling 75,000-acre Buena Vista Ranch near Mora.

The elk weren't shot, so the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is investigating just what caused the deaths.

Their top suspicion: something called Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD.  The often-fatal disease is caused by insect bites.

"With EHD, an elk could get a fever," said Game and Fish spokesperson Rachel Shockley. "It's usually a pretty fast illness, and up to eight to 36 hours later the animals go into shock, and then they die."

With elk bow hunting season starting on Sunday, some guided expeditions in the area may be called off.

Biologists are sending tissue samples from the elk and water samples from the area for testing.

If it is EHD, Game and Fish says it's not contagious to humans.  The disease is spread from insect bites, not animal to animal.

Game and Fish say no other die-offs of elk have been reported in New Mexico so far this year.

They say hunters should avoid harvesting elk that appear sick and to call and report anything unusual.

Unprecedented: Sockeye salmon at dire historic low on Canada’s Pacific coast — “We think something happened in the ocean” — “The elders have never seen anything like this at all” — Alaska and Russia also affected (MAP)

Quote
Aboriginal people in British Columbia who rely on Skeena River sockeye are facing some extremely difficult decisions as sockeye salmon returns plunge to historic lows.

Lake Babine Chief Wilf Adam was on his way to Smithers, B.C., on Monday for a discussion about whether to entirely shut down the food fishery on Lake Babine, something he said would be drastic and unprecedented [...]

Last month, the department noted returns for the Skeena River sockeye run were dire. [...]

[Mel Kotyk, North Coast area director for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans] said department scientists don’t know why the return numbers are so low. “[...] we think something happened in the ocean.”

“[...] We’ve never seen anything like this in all these years I’ve done this. I’ve asked the elders and they have never seen anything like this at all.” [said Chief Wilf Adam]

More: “The sockeye runs way up north in the Skeena are low. The [fish] out of Bristol Bay, Alaska is down 30 to 35 per cent over last year. Russia has got a limited number of fish in the market. They are down about 40 per cent over all their salmon fisheries.”

Gundersen: We are going to see top of the food chain animals like tuna and salmon and things like that that bioaccumulate [...] I am concerned that the FDA is not monitoring fish entering the United States [...] I am thinking by 2013 we might see contamination of the water and of the top of the food chain fishes on the West Coast.

Gundersen: Federal and state agencies are not measuring this… I’ve been working on the West Coast and I’ve been trying to get the people of Oregon to demand of their state, the people of Alaska to demand of their state: Check the salmon, it is not difficult.

From today: Biologist: Pacific herring in Canada bleeding from eyeballs, faces, fins, tails -- I've never seen fish looking this bad -- All 100 examined were bloody -- Officials informed of hemorrhaging soon after 3/11 -- Gov't ignoring problem (PHOTO)

UPDATE: Canadian official publicly claims 'no concern' over new Fukushima leak info... Yet privately requested tests on salmon, due to "great public concern about potential radiation contamination in these fish"

President Ollanta Humala announced that seven provinces of Puno will be declared in emergency due to heavy snowfall - which have left hundreds of families isolated and more than 250 000 dead alpacas.

The president flew over the areas affected by the low temperatures and falling snow, the worst in a decade .  Then signed the standard state of emergency declared in the provinces of Carabaya, Sandia, Lampa, San Antonio de Putina, Melgar, Puno and El Collao.

Humala, who was accompanied by Minister of Housing René Cornejo , delivered 10,000 blankets, medicines, food and other items.  Also 13 000 bags of oats and medicines for animals.  He also announced that he will return tomorrow to Puno with more help for the affected population.

Earlier, the Civil Defense deputy regional government of Puno, Percy Quispe, said it has ordered the suspension of classes in 16 schools in the province and state of immobility of the hospital staff.

A Humpback whale species was found dead Beach Depth of Ipiranga, Linhares, Northern Spirit , on Tuesday.  The 35-ton mammal was an adult male and was 14.5 meters long.  Since March 18, there have been five recorded cases of stranded whales along the coast of the State, all in a state of decomposition.  An expert explains that such cases are common this time of year.  The whale will be buried on the beach by the city.

According to biologist Erick Berger, whales migrate to the coast and are more vulnerable to accidents that can cause death.  "They come here to breed and the females give birth to the puppies.  And coming here, they are more susceptible to impacts with vessels, the water closest to the mainland are already more polluted.  All this can influence the cause of their death, "he said.

On Sept. 18, some twelve miles from the site where the whale was found today, another humpback also ran aground.  She was 12 feet long and was found by local residents.  After that day, according to the Institute Orca, four other whales stranded on beaches of the Holy Spirit.

The two whales found in Linhares will be buried in the same beach.  All service will be made by the city.

Eighty sea turtles wash up dead on the coast of Guatemala

Eighty dead sea turtles have been recorded since the first week of July on the country's southeastern beaches

An assortment of marine animals and birds reside along the black volcanic sand beaches of Guatemala's Pacific coast, but lately both residents and visitors on the southeast beaches of the country have observed a tragic event – the stranding of dead sea turtles.

Eighty dead sea turtles have been recorded since the first week of July on the beaches of La Barrona, Las Lisas, Chapeton and Hawaii according to a statement released by the Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association (ARCAS), a Guatemalan non-profit organization formed by citizens in 1989.

"The entire coast has historically been a significant nesting area for olive ridley and leatherback sea turtles," Colum Muccio, ARCAS administrative director, told mongabay.com. While not known to nest in Guatemala, east pacific green turtles forage in estuaries and mangrove waterways along the Pacific coast.

Tucked between Mexico and El Salvador, the 250 kilometers of coast is divided by 14 river mouths and peppered with beautiful mangrove wetlands and lagoons. In 1993, ARCAS initiated conservation activities in the Hawaii area with hopes of counteracting threats to leatherback and olive ridley sea turtle populations. The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is currently listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, while the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) is listed as Vulnerable.

"We manage two of the 24 hatcheries on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, and carry out research and advocacy for sea turtle conservation," Muccio said.

According to the statement, nearby residents are worried because sea turtles are a valuable resource. Not only do the sea turtles draw tourists to the coast, but, despite their endangered status, the eggs are also a source of income.

"Sea turtle conservation efforts in Guatemala rely on the use of hatcheries, which are managed as part of a quasi-legal egg harvest," Muccio said. "Villagers are permitted to collect eggs that are deposited on Guatemalan beaches on the condition that 20 percent of each clutch is donated to a nearby hatchery."

The system was initiated in the mid 1980s to promote the sustainable use of sea turtle eggs, Muccio continued. The operating hatcheries along the Pacific coastline function at various levels based on financial resources of the administering organization.

Muccio states many hatcheries are underfunded, short-staffed and operating with limited scientific knowledge. Several hatcheries do not carry out beach monitoring or research activities, contributing to the deficit in accurate nesting and stranding data.

"Many projects are lacking in the key elements necessary for the present community-based conservation system to function successfully," Muccio said.

In addition to egg harvesting, one of the main threats to sea turtles on the Pacific coast of Guatemala is fisheries by-catch. The statement notes that the appearance of dead turtles on the beach coincides with the presence of shrimp trawlers in waters off these beaches.

"I don't think it's a coincidence that when shrimp trawlers appear in the ocean that we begin having stranded turtles," Muccio said.

Although Guatemalan trawlers are required to use turtle excluder devices (TEDs), Muccio said that enforcement is difficult and fines are very light.

"We are currently working on instituting a ban on bottom trawling," said Muccio. "This has recently been done in Belize, Costa Rica and Ecuador and El Salvador doesn't allow them closer than 3 miles from shore."

Leading marine turtle conservationists and researchers presented a petition to the government of Guatemala expressing their concern. According to the statement, the petition requests that the government take action to counter the mortality of sea turtles, including the monitoring of shrimp trawlers to establish the impact on marine turtle populations.

"Sea turtles are also very much part of the identity of the local culture and local communities often take pride in their hatcheries and their contributions to save the sea turtle," Muccio said.

Is called the North "artificial Dongting," Asia's largest artificial reservoir overnight plains over 100 ten thousand kilograms of dead fish have emerged!  WASHINGTON reported, Henan Zhumadian City Suya Lake and the lake, recently covered with anti-belly farmed fish, but also because of the hot weather and rapid decay, disgusting stench filled the entire reservoir area, the fishermen estimated loss of over a thousand million.

Reported that the official informed that, or because of a sudden the water due to the low dissolved oxygen.  But all are merely questioned the real reason for suspected serious water pollution, requires the authorities conduct a thorough investigation.

"Color red flow into the cage, the fish began floating head, not a moment on the whole float came." Reservoir fishermen Luo Xinhua recalled their own farms, more than 50,000 kilograms of grass carp, small fish, etc., on Saturday night all of a sudden death, he fish for decades never met the same situation.  "Fish are a couple of kilos, in accordance with a wholesale price can sell a 10-20 yuan." Reported that he estimated losses of more than 60 million, and refers only to South Reservoir alone more than 100 million kilograms of fish deaths North Reservoir more heavy losses, many farmers lose everything.

Reported that Suya Lake Reservoir Authority, said there are still some serious rotting fish not picked up, the serious pollution of reservoirs and lakes.  The shore fish processing less because too many start crawling maggots and stench smoked day, deplorable sanitary conditions, municipal government asked farmers buried the dead fish unified treatment to prevent bad bacteria spread.

According to the monitoring results of the official notification refers to the analysis of water quality incident oxygen fish survive just one-sixth of the standard to one-third is estimated to be the main cause large fish kills.  According to reports, but industry insiders questioned another insider, the lake has a number of loach, fish, turtle, even though the lake without water, drilling mud loach can survive, while the shark is no oxygen in the water climbed ashore, not As all dead.  Municipal Bureau of Agriculture also refers to fish hypoxic death only appearance, has invited experts to assist Provincial Academy of Fishery thorough investigation.

Suya Lake "artificial Dongting" reputation, is Asia's largest artificial reservoir plain, an area of over 4700 square kilometers, the annual production of 30 kinds of fish.

Fish kills

Deadly circulation

30.08.2013 · This week were rinsed several tons of dead fish on the Baltic Sea beach between Heiligendamm and Graal-Müritz.  What sounds creepy, is quite common.  About the fish kill on the Baltic coast.

As this week between Heiligendamm on the Baltic Sea beach and Graal-Müritz drives several tons of dead fish, mainly bream and roach, which belong rather to fresh water, the experts was clear that this is due to a break-saline and oxygen-poor water.  The fish had demonstrated neither disease nor external injuries.

Christopher Zimmerman, deputy head of the Rostock Thünen-Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries, explains the phenomenon: The salinity of the Baltic Sea is not very high.  He is also determined by the North Sea.  The autumn and winter storms play a major role.  First sweeps east of the Baltic Sea, as it is empty, then the west wind brings saline water from the North Sea.  The salty water is less than the less salinity.

But where the freshwater fish come from?

First, it is also rich in oxygen.  But then when plankton layers on the lake, the algal mats around, die and sink into the depths, the bacteria decompose the plankton - and need oxygen.  Now, if this salty, but now even low-oxygen layers are swirled to the surface, which is threatening for many marine animals.

So something seems to be happening on the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast now.  Ablandiger wind has driven away the upper layers of the sea, the lower saline and oxygen-poor came from about 20 meters to the surface.  But where the freshwater fish come from?  Zimmermann explains it so that many of them are staying in places where fresh water meets sea water, such as in the Warnow estuary.

"Of course the salt water does not flow very far up the creeks, in the case of the Warnow in Rostock, at best, to the port city." In fact, there have been the end of last week, such a revolution by offshore wind.  Sign was that the water temperature dropped within 48 hours from 21 to 17 degrees.

They could not run away fast enough

But not the temperature drop was fatal to the fish, but the oxygen depletion of the cold water from the deeper layers.  They could not run away fast enough, as Zimmermann explained.  "A cod has about as there is no problem, he just swims away." That many fish die at such times, come again and again again and can also happen anywhere on the Baltic Sea, provided offshore wind and offshore.  Recently there had been in the Bay of Lübeck, a mussel die.  "This is still well remembered because it stunk mightily," says Zimmermann.

The water changes are also seen in the occurrence of jellyfish, usually present at the dividing line between the deeper salt water and the layers above.  Also, they are then stirred up and brought to the surface.  In fact, many jellyfish were observed in the last days of Rostock.

 Thousands of dead fish found(France)

Yesterday morning, the National Office for Water and Aquatic Environments (Onema) and the police went to the edge of the bridge Saichy in La Bresse, more precisely at the bedside Chajoux stream that flows into the Moselotte.  They found the presence of a significant amount of dead fish on the banks and in the river.  Samples were made by the police to determine the cause of the carnage.  Because mortality of wildlife is visible over six kilometers.  More than a thousand heads of all species.  Dead fish have even been spotted in the Moselotte the center of La Bresse, swept away by the current.

The alert was given Wednesday morning by a fisherman who had found nothing suspicious yesterday, but noticed the presence of dead trout amount upon arrival.  He alerted the authorities, who immediately have attempted to identify a potential source of pollution, which proves chemical.  Nothing could be ascertained during these first steps.  Ongoing analyzes are likely to provide more answers to the investigators of the community brigades Saulxures-sur-Moselotte.  However, time is needed.  The Federation of Fisheries decided to complain.

Fish Kill reported at Lake Koocanusa

EUREKA - State wildlife officials say a strong and fast moving storm front last Sunday night appears to have triggered a kokanee salmon die-off in Lake Koocanusa.

Fisheries biologist Mike Hensler estimates there were at least 10,000 dead juvenile kokanee measuring 8"-10" long scattered from Big Creek to the Canadian border.

The event is similar to a die-off in 2005, and several others in the 1990s and earlier.

John Fraley with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks says the deaths appear to have been triggered by a period of calm, hot weather that lets the reservoir stratify and allows algae to bloom.

The storm front, accompanying winds and drop in atmospheric pressure allows the algae to mix with deeper layers. The kokanee ingest the algae, which includes some blue-green algae which is toxic to the fish, as they are feeding, according to a news release.

The fish then become disoriented, come to the surface, their air bladders expand and they are unable to dive back to depth so the warm surface water kills them.

The algae is not abundant enough to affect humans and has now been dispersed by continuing winds.

Fraley pointed out that the die-off only lasted a few days and only affected a small portion of what would be next year's adult salmon. There are no health concerns with eating a fish healthy enough to hit a lure.

Closer to a state of emergency; Toxic water devastating Treasure Coast
Story by Jana Eschbach / CBS12 News
Posted by Scott T. Smith / CBS12 News
STUART, Fla. -- St. Lucie County commissioners give the go ahead to draft a state of emergency. All commissioners unanimously approved the move.

It will be finalized and voted on next week, which will then open up funding for environmental and economic losses.

The news comes the same day we've learned that nearly 100 percent of the 23 acres of state funded oyster beds are dead. 100 percent of the St. Lucie River in Stuart and Port St. Lucie is toxic. Releases from Lake Okeechobee are estimated to continue through 2014.

All this is taking a toll on the tourism and boating industry, the environment, and even people's health.

Bacteria levels are so high, you can't touch the water or risk an infection. Toxic algae so serious, it can cause liver damage.

Tourism numbers on the west coast of Florida are just in, show 70 percent of the tourism industry is seeing a great economic hit.

Fifty percent of hotel guests say they won't return because of the dirty water.

Treasure Coast officials have not yet surveyed businesses to date, but the numbers won't be good.

"The important thing is let's declare it a State of Emergency," said Mark Perry, Executive Director at Florida Oceanographic Society.  "I mean this is not only an emergency environmentally, but economically for the people in the area for their livelihoods and health-wise. So there should be a state team that comes here from Department of Environmental Protection and the Governor's office, and everyone should be on this."

A state Senate panel last week focused on possible solutions for now, like using cattle ranches and conservation lands to hold water, some of it is land currently flooded by Big Sugar.

$4 million of taxpayer money was spent on the oyster reef project. The water in the spring was crystal clear in the estuary. Now, its toxic.

"This is a real real crisis here," Perry said.

With four months of fresh water pouring in, the salinity in the St. Lucie River plunged to zero.

"We went out and did surveys on August 2 and found about 49 percent mortality in the oysters. But for so much fresh water for so long, they cant tolerate it," Perry said. "Those oysters form reef environments, and create habitats for about 300 species of little crabs, shrimp, and juvenile fish that are based on the food chain, on up the food chain -- that habitat alone is being decimated."

This week the oyster reefs are declared dead. Your tax dollars were spent on a big project, only to be destroyed once again.

"These coastal estuaries cannot take it -- enough is enough." Perry said.

But Perry says we have to keep spending to keep regenerating these reefs, or the entire estuary will die. What would that look like? No fish, dolphins, manatees, nothing will live in the water.

"Look we cant give up. As soon as this events over we have to get back out there and try to recover this habitat, cause oysters and seagrasses and mangroves, these are critical habitats for these coastal estuaries." Perry said.

The New York Times is here today, CBS Evening News, are focusing on the economy, and other networks on dolphin deaths. Are we gaining any support for funding a comprehensive solution for the coastal and Lake regions with all this coverage? Not yet.

To bring awareness to Washington this week and encourage funding, Congressman Patrick Murphy is taking a tour of the entire Everglades and Lake region projects with South Florida Water Managers first thing Wednesday.

Murphy is trying to secure federal support in Washington to pay for the projects. Fully-funded, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, passed  in 2000, would cost $8 billion, and take 15 to 20 years to complete.

Thousands of dead fish before Nienhagen(Germany)
 Nienhagen  · 27/08/2013
On the beach of Nienhagen west of Warnemunde have been washed ashore on Tuesday a lot of dead fish.  This is mainly to freshwater fish such as bream or roach.

According to Christopher Zimmermann from Rostock Thünen-Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries, the animals have died from lack of oxygen, a process not rare in summer.  Surface water will vergedrängt with offshore winds and replaced by poorer oxygen deep water.  At low salt concentrations in the Baltic Sea and freshwater fish here could find good living conditions.  Conversely penetrate saltwater fish found in the estuaries until they no longer cope with the decreasing salt concentration.

Bolivia: four dead and 3500 families affected
8/30/13

PEACE. Four farmers were killed and 3500 families were affected by heavy snow that fell in recent days in four of the nine departments of Bolivia, according to official reports published Friday.

"There are more than 3500 families affected across the country, most damage is in Cochabamba, La Paz and Potosi. Has died a person more by snow in the municipality of Colquechaca (Potosí)," he told reporters Oscar Cabrera, Deputy Minister of Civil Defense.

"With that we would be four people that have been killed," said the authority.

A cold front with snow storms hit in recent days to the departments of La Paz (west), Cochabamba (center), Potosi (southwest) and Chuquisaca (southeast).

Cabrera flew on Friday the most affected area comprising the township Cocapata in Cochabamba (center) was where food, provisions, medical relief and animal fodder.

Heavy machinery has cleared snow blocking access to the town, said Mayor Pedro Padilla.

To tell the Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Víctor Hugo Vásquez, the cold weather caused in Cochabamba the loss of at least 2000 head of livestock, including sheep and camels.

The report by the Vice Ministry of Civil Defense said that the snow storms impacted on livestock killing "40 000 head of sheep and 30,000 cattle camel in the departments of Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Potosí and La Paz".

Precisely attempts to rescue the cattle have caused the death of the peasants.  For this factor, several locals were initially reported as missing, although they returned home.

Reuben Colquhoun, director of Area Health Services Ministry, announced sending ten health brigades to affected areas in the Department of La Paz.

There, the area most affected was the mining center Caracoles (400 km from La Paz), where extractive activities were paralyzed as a result of snow and where access is difficult.

"Even doctors left," said one clerk to mine Erbol.

Cinthia Prado, in charge of risk prevention at the state ABC road manager, said that "the trunk routes are passable" as traders proceeded to clean them, but urged caution to drivers as the platform becomes slippery from melting.  (AFP)

Unprecedented: Sockeye salmon at dire historic low on Canada’s Pacific coast — “We think something happened in the ocean” — “The elders have never seen anything like this at all” — Alaska and Russia also affected
8/12/13

Pashmina withers on roof of the world
 By Athar Parvaiz

CHANGTHANG, India - The famed pashmina shawl that keeps the cold away - in style and at a price - could itself have become the victim of winter. Thousands of goats whose fine wool is woven into pashmina have perished in extreme cold being associated with climate change.

Pashmina is drawn from Changra goats found in Ladakh region of Kashmir state and a part of the Tibetan peninsula, more than 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) above sea level. The peninsula is often called the Roof of the World. Little grows in these areas where the temperature can drop to minus 35 degrees Celsius. The local Changpa nomads live off their herds of sheep, yak and goats.

The Changthang region of the larger Tibetan Peninsula does not normally see heavy snowfall. That may be changing, given the heavy snowfall earlier this year that deprived the Changpas of fodder for their animals.

"In the past five years this is the second time I have seen such heavy snowfall," Bihkit Angmo, 53, who rears goats, told IPS outside her tent in Kharnak, a nomadic settlement 173 kilometers east of Leh, capital of Ladakh. "This new trend of snowfall several feet high has left us quite worried."

Summer last year brought its own problems, leaving areas parched and barren. "It was terrible. We had to go long distances to find suitable pasture for our livestock," said Angmo.

This summer, melting snow brought some greenery back but not before serious loss. The District Sheep Husbandry Office at Leh puts the number of goats lost due to weather upheavals at 24,624. This has seriously jeopardized the pashmina business. Wool from the goat is extremely warm, given the cold the animal has to survive in. With a diameter of 14-19 microns, strands of pashmina are said to be six times finer than human hair.

Kashmiri craftsmen have used these for generations to make the renowned Pashmina shawl, woven with hand and often embellished with fine embroidery. A pashmina shawl can cost about US$200-$600. Pashmina exports fetched $160 million in 2011-12, according to the state government's economic survey.

Now, given the extremes of summer and winter, goats are dying either of starvation or of hypothermia.

Angmo's is one of few families that have stayed behind in Kharnak to still rear Pashmina-producing goats. Some 83 families out of a total of 98 have migrated from this area, according to Mohammad Sharief, the district sheep husbandry officer at Leh.

"For the past several years," he told IPS, "our surveys show that five to 10 families from the Changthang area migrate to Leh city every year."

There are an estimated 2,500 Changpa families in Changthang, according to Sharief, managing about 200,000 goats. Each goat produces 250 grams of wool in a season. The wool sells at about $35 a kilogram.

Nomads from Changthang have set up their own neighborhood in Leh called Kharnak Ling. "All the families that have migrated from Kharnak and other belts of Changthang have settled here," said Sharief.

Motub Angmo, 43, is among those who migrated from Kharnak four years back to settle in Leh. The hard mountain life had got to him, he said, and they moved out after selling off the 300 goats the family had.

"Now that we have no livestock, we go and work as laborers,"
he told IPS. His five children go to a proper school in Leh. The mobile schools that the government had set up for nomads in the mountains did not succeed.

If things continue this way, Sharief said, Pashmina-goat rearing would come to an end in the next two decades. That would also mean the end of livelihood for about 300,000 people in the Jammu and Kashmir state of India who depend on pashmina directly or indirectly, according to Shariq Farooqi, director of the Craft Development Institute in Srinagar, the summer capital of the state.

"We all rely on pashmina for making shawls," Ashraf Banday, a pashmina trader in the city, told IPS. "Any threat to its production means a threat to our livelihood."

As it is, he said, the Kashmir pashmina industry is suffering because of duplicate products in the market. "Any decline in pashmina production will make it even more vulnerable."

According to Sharief, India's textile ministry has woken up to the problem of the migrating Changpas and initiated measures to encourage them to stay back. "We have a budget of 70 million rupees [US$1.2 million] this year to stock feed in fodder banks to be used in winter," he said. "We are also planning to provide tents and shelters to the nomads."

His department is making an effort to relocate families in Leh back into Changthang. "Last year we relocated two families in Kharnak and created mini-farms for them by giving them 50 animals each free of cost," said Sharief.

Once the families are established, some goats will be retrieved from them and given to other families. Sharief hopes the cycle can continue till most of the families are relocated.

The threat to Pashmina goat-rearing will also mean an end to the unique culture of the Changpas, Sharief said. Most of them are followers of Tibetan Buddhism and have an elaborate set of customs centered around their livestock. Traditionally, the nomads were also polyandrous, though that is changing with the younger generation.
