Mysterious death of 60,000 saiga antelopes in 4 days baffles Kazakhs scientists

Within 4 days, 60,000 antelopes have died in Kazakhstan.
And the worst is that nobody knows why.

In May 2015, nearly half of all the highly endangered saiga antelopes died offs, a critically endangered antelope that roams the steppe of Kazakhstan, died off mysteriously.

But within four days, the entire herd — 60,000 saiga — had died. By early June, the mass dying was over.

Is has been scientifically shown that the mass kill involved bacteria. But how these normally harmless microbes could take such a toll is still a mystery.

The extent of this die-off, and the speed it had, by spreading throughout the whole calving herd and killing all the animals, this has not been observed for any other species. It’s really unheard of.

The die-off started during the calving period.

Hundreds of mysterious eels wash up on Wasaga Beach and nobody knows why

Hundreds of weird fish are currently washing up on Wasaga Beach.
Mysterious eels, unprecedent die-off, but what is going on the Nottawasaga River, Ontario?

VIDEO: http://strangesounds.org/2015/09/mysterious-eels-die-off-wasaga-beach-canada.html

Hundreds of mysterious eels have washed up on shore near the mouth of the Nottawasaga River and nobody knows why. Such an extreme mass die-off has never been experienced in the area. This is something completely foreign to residents’ eyes.

Although not positively confirmed yet, these eels appear to be a a type of peacock eel normaly found in the tropical waters of Thailand, India and Burma… That would be the first known report of peacock eels in the Great Lakes.

So what are these exotic and mysterious eels doing in Canada? Yes, how did they get here is the real concern. Maybe somebody has released the eels into the wild? But how to explaine their high numbers? Can they survive winter and establish a population? OMG were are getting invaded by creepy little fish.

Hundreds of baby dolphins strand mysteriously along the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria, but nobody cares about

In August 2015 more than 200 dolphin calves were stranded at the Black sea coast of Bulgaria.
But nobody cares about this mysterious and critical baby dolphins mass die-off.

More than 250 baby dolphins have been reported dead from 25 July to 25 August, 2015. However, another 42 cases have not been added yet… And probably more.

This unprecedent dolphin mass die-off is being mapped, monitored and investigated by Keep Coral, a group of citizens and Green Balkans, environmetal experts.

But officials remain inactive although knowing about this mysterious mass die-off.

According to unofficial versions, this anomalous dolphin kill is linked to human activities such as seismic surveys or field studies for oil deposits. Other possible causes of mortality are military exercises, naturally disease or infection, toxic pollution in the sea, any natural disasters (earthquake, explosion, sonar, etc.), death by decompression and commercial fishing.

Dead walruses found on northwest Alaska beach
9/24/15
http://news.yahoo.com/dead-walruses-found-northwest-alaska-beach-022225714.html

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Walrus carcasses were found last week on a northwest Alaska beach, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the deaths appear to be natural.

The animals were discovered near Point Lay at the same location where 35,000 walrus were spotted on shore Sept. 2.

An employee of the U.S. Geological Survey provided a photo of the walrus carcasses to Fish and Wildlife, the service said in Thursday release.

The service said it is analyzing the photos to determine if the carcasses are new or old and trying to determine an age range of the walruses. An investigator will then have to confirm onsite.

The service said foul play is not suspected, and the carcasses were intact. It did not provide a number of dead walruses.

Walruses gathered in huge herds can stampede if approached by a polar bear, hunter or airplane. Young animals can be crushed in the rush to reach the safety of ocean water. The carcasses of more than 130 mostly young walruses were counted after a stampede in September 2009 at Alaska's Icy Cape.

The cause of death of the animals at Point Lay has not been determined.

The U.S. Attorney in Alaska is overseeing the investigation of 25 walruses found dead and reported shot at Cape Lisburne about 100 miles southwest of Point Lay.

Cape Lisburne is the site of an Air Force radar station staffed by a handful of personnel. A person connected to the station reported the dead walruses and sent a photo of the animals to the Fish and Wildlife Service. Heads and tusks were removed from some of the animals. Federal prosecutors said this week they cannot comment on the case.

The fate of the walrus has become a cause for concern as climate warming diminishes summer sea ice and the polar ice cap recedes beyond the shallow outer continental shelf over water too deep for walruses to reach clams and snails on the ocean floor.

Walruses in large numbers on shore were first spotted on the U.S. side of the Chukchi Sea in 2007. An estimated 35,000 walruses gathered on a herd near Point Lay last year and again on Sept. 2.

Endangered fur seals dying on California coast
9/29/15

Los Angeles (AFP) - Eighty fur seals have been found stranded or dead on California's coast so far this year, eight times more than normal, scientists said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said 42 of the seals were found dead and the remainder were found alive but half-starving.

The NOAA said on Tuesday it was declaring an Unusual Mortality Event in light of the strandings and deaths, a designation that allows for more federal funds to be allocated for the threatened species.

Teneya Norris, of the Marine Mammal Center which is caring for some of the animals, attributed the strandings to changes in the availability of food due to ocean-warming trends.

"These stranded animals are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of animals affected by the unusually warm water temperatures we've been seeing off the coast," Norris said.

The fur seals were nearly brought to extinction in the late 1800s because of hunting and today about 10,000 remain.

They breed almost exclusively on Guadalupe Island, off the Mexican coast, and little is known about the species.

In 2013, the NOAA also sounded the alarm on California's sea lions after hundreds became stranded along the coast.

Norris said while the number of fur seals stranded is significantly lower than the 1,300 sea lions rescued this year, the influx was distressing.

"While these numbers might not sound like a lot, for a threatened species it's actually a big warning sign that we need to pay attention to what's happening in our oceans," she said.

Thousands of fish discovered dead along the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia baffle scientists

Nobody knows why these fish died!
But one thing is sure… Thousands of dead sardines are covering the shores of of Yanbu’ al Bahr, a major Red Sea port in the Al Madinah province of western Saudi Arabia.

Some unofficial sources speak from pollution and industrial wastes, others from changing water properties responsible for the killing of these thousands of fish dead. What about industrial contamination and sewage changing the properties of the water.

Times are alarming after the reports of hundreds of dead walruses and killed wildebeest.

Millions of starfish killed by mysterious disease that is causing sea stars to commit suicide

Millions of starfish along the Pacific coast are dying due to a mysterious disease that causes the sea stars to devour themselves.

Scientists worked over the last two years to finally determine the origin of this weird suicide behavior.

Sea stars are indeed devouring themselves along the coastline from Mexico to Alaska due to a virus dubbed the Sea Star Associated Densovirus, or SSaDV.

This mysterious disease causes white lesions to appear before the animal’s body sags, ruptures and spills out its internal organs.

Apocalyptical cuttlefish mass die-off in Chile unexplained

Thousands of cuttlefish mysteriously washed up on Santa Maria off Coronel, Chile on January 12, 2016.
The cause of the mass die-off remains unexplained.

The animals appeared in the South Island Harbor.

Scientists have started insvestigating the possible causes for this mysterious and apocalyptical mass die-off.

First images of this mass kill were widespread by Mayor Leonidas Romeros on Twitter.

Toxicological tests are now underway.

While it may be natural, this cuttlefish mass die-off may also result from water contamination.

Investigation into seabird deaths
Published: 4:55 pm, Wednesday, 13 January 2016

Federal scientists have launched an investigation after thousands of seabirds turned up dead in Alaska.

The remains of an estimated 8000 common murres were discovered last week on a mile-long section of beach at Whittier, a community on Prince William Sound 60 miles south of Anchorage.

US Geological Survey researcher John Piatt said winter die-offs of murres have taken place before, but that the number at Whittier is unprecedented.

Experts have said the birds appear to have starved to death. Laboratory tests have found no parasites or diseases in the carcasses.

Kathy Kuletz, a US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) biologist, said warming ocean surface temperatures may have affected the fish that common murres feed on.

A 2008 agency study found that previous die-offs of the species took place when surface temperatures increased by just a few degrees.

David Irons, a former biologist for the USFWS, alerted colleagues after finding the birds in Whittier.

He told the Alaska Dispatch News: 'It's a regular part of their life history, but I would say this is the most extreme I have ever seen or heard of.'

Experts have said the birds were dangerously underweight and emaciated.

Mr Piatt told the newspaper: 'These birds are wicked skinny - no fat reserves.

'It's an awful way to die, and they're dying en masse.'

Alaska is thought to be home to an estimated 2.8 million breeding common murres in 230 colonies.

Tens of thousands of starfish wash up in the Gulf of Mexico: Experts at a loss for the carnage!

Thousands of dead starfish are washing ashore and spread across about a mile of beach in Port St. Joe
A video courtesy of Susan Whiten shows tens of thousands of dead starfish washing up near Windmark beach in Florida as she took a stroll with her husband.

It's just another sad mass die off of marine life which appears to be happening around the world recently
The increase in fish die-offs around the globe is staggering to say the least and the starfish die off since 2011 is say scientists, one of the biggest dieoff''s ever recorded but they were only dying off along the West Coast of America, now they are showing up in the Gulf of Mexico.

Since last September fish die off have been common in this area because of the red tide algae bloom but this is the first report of starfish....

Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said they won't be able to tell what killed this many starfish since their tissue dries out fast, and they're unable to test it.

They said, though, environmental factors like this cold weather and recent storms likely played a large factor.

Fish kill in Florida: 'Heartbreaking images' seen for miles

(CNN) — Florida may be the fishing capital of the world, but you'd never know it from the latest scenes around the state's Indian River Lagoon.

Usually idyllic beaches, waterways and estuaries near the massive, biodiverse ecosystem along central Florida's Atlantic coast are littered with scores of dead, rotting fish; an estimated hundreds of thousands of them are floating belly up in brackish, polluted water as far as the eye can see.

"The heartbreaking images can be seen for miles," said Mike Conner, who has been fishing the area since the 1970s. "All up and down the coast, it's the same story, and it could get worse before it gets better."

But the devastation isn't merely what is visible on the surface; it runs far deeper.

El Nino has soaked Florida recently, even during its usual "dry season."

In January, parts of central Florida received triple the amount of rain they normally do for the month. All that rainwater eventually made its way into estuaries via urbanized neighborhoods, picking up fertilizer and other pollutants along the way.

But that's not all.

Temperatures were warmer than usual during the winter, allowing a toxic algae bloom and brown tide to deplete the water of oxygen.

Ed Garland, a spokesman for the St. John River Water Management District, said officials can't determine the effect from the brown tide on the seagrass yet since the water is too cloudy. In 2011, more than half of the seagrass reportedly died off, and there are still damaged areas from that die-off.

These scenes are no doubt jarring to the eyes -- and not to mention the nose -- but state environmental officials said they have happened before.

"Fish kills happen all the time," said Kelly Richmond of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. "This is a massive kill, but there are fish kills all over the state."

However, Richmond conceded, "We have had brown tide there before but nothing to this extent."

The impact extends beyond the shores of the Indian River Lagoon -- comprised of the Mosquito, Banana River and Indian River lagoons -- and into the pocketbooks of Floridians, especially those in the state's two most profitable industries: tourism and fishing.

"Our oysters are dead, seagrasses are dead," said Conner, the fisherman. "It (will be) hard to recover. You never fully recover."

100 starlings mysteriously fall from the sky in Redding, California

About 100 starlings were found dead along Interstate 5 north of Redding, California.
State officials are baffled and trying to figure out the origin of this bird mass die-off.

After hundreds of crows in Michigan and 13 bald eagles in Maryland, it’s now the residents of Redding, California who are confronted with an enigmatic mass die-off of nearly 100 starlings that suddenly fall from the sky.

The birds were first spotted on Saturday, March 26, 2016, along the I-5 just before the Wonderland Boulevard exit.

This is the first time official biologists hear about a bird die off in the region. And it is often hard to figure out what happened.

Were the birds killed by a passing car or truck? Or were they poisoned? Did they have any sickness?

The birds that weren’t in the roadway didn’t seem to show signs of trauma from crashing into vehicles or being struck. And if they were killed by disease or poison, why they would all be together. very unusual, very rare!

The mysterious bird kill remains unexplained.

All Of A Sudden, Fish Are Dying By The MILLIONS All Over The Planet

Why are millions upon millions of dead sea creatures suddenly washing up on beaches all over the world?  It is certainly not unusual for fish and other inhabitants of our oceans to die.  This happens all the time.  But over the past month we have seen a series of extremely alarming mass death incidents all over the planet.  As you will see below, many of these mass death incidents have involved more than 30 tons of fish.  In places such as Chile and Vietnam, it has already gotten to the level where it has started to become a major national crisis.  People see their coastlines absolutely buried in dead sea creatures, and they are starting to freak out.

For example, just check out what is going on in Chile right now.  The following comes from a Smithsonian Magazine article entitled “Why Are Chilean Beaches Covered With Dead Animals?“…

Compared to other countries, Chile is almost all coast, and that geographical fluke means that the country is known for its beautiful beaches. But that reputation may be on the wane thanks to a new sight on Chilean shores: dead animals. Lots of them. Heaps of them, in fact. As Giovanna Fleitas reports for the Agence France-Presse, the South American country’s beaches are covered with piles of dead sea creatures—and scientists are trying to figure out why.

Tales of dead animals washing up on shore are relatively common; after all, the ocean has a weird way of depositing its dead on shore. But Chile’s problem is getting slightly out of hand. As Fleitas writes, recent months have not been kind to the Chilean coast, which has played host to washed-up carcasses of over 300 whales, 8,000 tons of sardines, and nearly 12 percent of the country’s annual salmon catch, to name a few.

Authorities in Chile are scrambling to come up with a reason for why this is happening, but nobody appears to be quite sure what is causing this tsunami of death.

In Vietnam, things are even worse.  At this point, so many dead fish and clams have been washing up along the coast that soldiers have been deployed to bury them…

Millions of fish have washed up dead along a 125-kilometre stretch of the Vietnamese coast in one of the communist country’s worst environmental disasters.

Soldiers have been deployed to bury tonnes of fish, clams and the occasional whale that began dying in early April along the north-central coast, including some popular tourist beaches.

Vietnamese officials facing growing anger over the disaster have not announced the official cause of the deaths, which have affected the livelihoods of tens of thousands of families.

Elsewhere in Asia, there have been similar incidents.  For example, CNN is reporting that one lake in southern China is currently dealing with 35 tons of dead fish…

At least 35 tons of dead fish appeared in a lake in southern China, leaving residents stunned.

The piles of fish washed up in a lake in Hainan province on Wednesday, Chinese state media reported.

Residents expressed concerns on pollution, but local authorities said the fish died as a result of salinity change.

On the other side of the world, similar incidents have also happened in major lakes.  Here is one example from Bolivia…

Thousands of dead fish have washed up onto the shores of a lake in Bolivia.

Just before they died, some of the fish had just hatched from their eggs in lake Alalay, in the central Bolivian city of Cochabamba.

No one yet knows the number of dead fish, but they have stockpiled five cubic metres (177 cubic feet) so far, so it’s possible there is over a tonne of dead fish in the lake.

And here is an example from Brazil…

More than 200 tons of dead fish were removed from the Furnas Lake on Sunday (1st) in Alfenas (MG). According to the Military Police of the Environment, both fish raised in ponds, networks and those who are released, all of the tilapia species in the lake were affected. The damage to the psicultores is estimated at around R $ 900 thousand.

I could go on and on all day with examples such as these.

Just within the last month, 40 tons of fish died in India, 65 tons of fish died in Cambodia, 70 tons of fish died in Colombia, and millions of fish “suddenly died” in Indonesia.

So why is this happening?

I don’t know.

Could it be possible that these mass deaths are somehow related to the alarming earth changes that we see happening all around us?

Without a doubt, we have seen a dramatic rise in seismic activity during the early portions of 2016.  There has been a series of very destructive earthquakes around the world in recent months, and once dormant volcanoes are coming to life all over the globe with distressing regularity.

Of course humanity has done much to destroy the planet as well, and we continue to deal with the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.  I do think that it is very interesting to note that most of these mass fish deaths have happened in nations that border the Pacific Ocean.

I am certainly not claiming to have an answer for why so many fish are dying.  All I know is that millions upon millions of dead fish are washing up on shores all over the globe, and people are really starting to freak out about this.

We live in a world that is becoming increasingly unstable, and major disasters seem to be getting more frequent and more intense.  Just look at what is happening up in Alberta right now.

I believe that we are entering the “perfect storm” that myself and so many others have been warning about for so long.

Or could it be possible that I am just being overly dramatic?

When I used to live in New Orleans, I went to Grand Isle a couple of times to fish - a very wide place in terms of catching a lot of fish. We had to pay a fee to get a fishing spot, but we caught tons of fish that day.

Largest fish kill in 10 years in Nueva Venecia, Colombia

Nueva Venecia is currently experiencing the largest fish kill of the last 10 years.

This new mass die-off in the area is blamed to low oxygen levels… Officials say.

Fish, fish and fish… Dead at the surface of the water! This is what fishermen of Nueva Venecia, Colombia, are currently reporting again.

Tons of them are floating on the water. According to officials, they all died from lack of oxygen. But due to what? Pollution? They don’t want to say more!

These fish are the main economic resource for thousands of families living in villages around.

Hundreds of thousands of dead fish wash into New Jersey marina

8/24/16

KEANSBURG, N.J.  — Hundreds of thousands of dead fish washed into a marina in Keansburg, New Jersey, following a massive fish kill in a nearby creek, CBS New York reported.

According to CBS New York chopper reporter Joe Biermann, the 3-to-4-inch dead fish have completely surrounded many boats.

“We’re talking hundreds of thousands of fish, if not millions of fish,” said Bob Considine of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP said the type of fish that washed into the marina over the past couple of days is known as a peanut bunker. They were most likely chased into the marina off of Laurel Avenue by either blue fish or skates in Raritan Bay.

The peanut bunker fish all died due to low oxygen levels in the marina.

“Basically, there wasn’t enough oxygen in the water to sustain them,” Considine said.

This is causing a lot of problems for boaters as a lot of engines are encased in the fish.

The dead fish have been sending a pungent smell across the area.

“It’s bad, it’s enough to gag you,” one resident said. “It smells like a sewer plant backed up and let out in the water.”

Frank Dean manages a couple of marinas in Keansburg. He said also said the combination of a million dead fish and mid-August temperatures has made for a nasty, stinky brew.

“You know if you leave fish in the garbage can for a couple of days and it’s hot out, it’s going to smell,” he said. “Well that’s the smell.”

Keansburg Mayor George Hoff said they are taking care of the fish that washed up on the beach.

“Right behind us in the creek we really can’t do much about it because it would be a massive clean-up effort, but on our beach where they washed up, our Department of Public Works is taking care of it,” Hoff said.”

The DEP said they don’t know how long the clean-up will take.

Tens of Thousands of Dead Fish Turn Up in New York Bay, State Environmental Officials Launch Investigation
11/15/16

Tens of thousands of dead fish have reportedly turned up in Shinnecock Bay in Hampton Bays, New York, prompting the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation to launch an investigation.

Predatory fish likely chased the "large, dense school of bunker (Atlantic menhaden) and other bait fish" into the Long Island bay's canal early Monday morning, state officials told ABC News today in a statement.

The fish were apparently trapped when the canal gates closed around 3 a.m. A preliminary field analysis suggested that the fish likely died because of "a lack of dissolved oxygen and the high density of fish," the conservation department added.

The dead fish then entered the bay and washed ashore after the canal's gates opened at 10 a.m., state officials said.

The sight and smell of the thousands of dead fish bothered locals on Monday, ABC New York station WABC-TV reported.

"I don’t remember any day or any time like this," Hampton Bays resident Jerry Ippolito told WABC. "This is the worst."

East Quogue resident Nikki Perry said, "I think it's horrible. It's a shame."

But "the fish kill does not suggest any impacts to the health of Shinnecock Bay," state officials said, adding that environmental workers have collected water samples for further analysis.

As a precaution, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services has also collected water samples to test for pathogens, nutrients and pesticides, department spokeswoman Grace Kelly-McGovern said.

The results of the tests will likely be available in a few weeks, she told ABC News today.

She added that most of the fish are no longer on the bay's shore and likely sank to the bottom of the bay or were swept out to sea by the tides.

Thousands of Dead Bees Wash Ashore on Naples Beach

A bee expert told WBBH that seeing bees wash up at the beach is very unusual

Thousands of dead and dying bees are washing up on a popular beach in Southern Florida.

Naples beach goers had to watch where they stepped Tuesday after some people say they have been stung just along the shoreline, according to NBC affiliate WBBH-TV.

Martha Duff lives in Naples and recently had a painful encounter with the bees.

"I've been stung a couple of times and at first, I didn't know what it was and then I realized and then I had an allergic reaction," Duff said.

Naples residents say the problem started only a few days ago. They are both concerned and confused.

"Why are there bees? Where are they coming from? And why are they in a very specific area of the beach?" Duff said.

A bee expert told WBBH that seeing bees wash up at the beach is very unusual. The cause could be anything from a nearby pesticide spraying forcing them to the water or a swarm flying overhead that became exhausted and flew into the water.
