A Massive Electromagnetic Pulse Could Collapse The Economy In A Single Moment

What would you do if all the lights went out and they never came back on?  That is a question that the new NBC series "Revolution" asks, but most people have no idea that a similar thing could happen in real life at any moment.  A single gigantic electromagnetic pulse over the central United States could potentially fry most of the electronics from coast to coast if it was powerful enough.  This could occur in a couple of different ways.  If a powerful nuclear weapon was exploded at a high enough altitude, it could produce an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to knock out electronics all over the country.  Alternatively, a massive solar storm could potentially cause a similar phenomenon to happen just about anywhere on the planet without much warning.  Of course not all EMP events are created equal.  An electromagnetic pulse can range from a minor inconvenience to a civilization-killing event.  It just depends on how powerful it is.  But in the worst case scenario, we could be facing a situation where our electrical grids have been fried, there is no heat for our homes, our computers don't work, the Internet does not work, our cell phones do not work, there are no more banking records, nobody can use credit cards anymore, hospitals are unable to function, nobody can pump gas, and supermarkets cannot operate because there is no power and no refrigeration.  Basically, we would witness the complete and total collapse of the economy.  According to a government commission that looked into these things, approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population would die from starvation, disease and societal chaos within one year of a massive EMP attack.  It would be a disaster unlike anything we have ever seen before in U.S. history.

Most Americans are totally clueless about what an EMP attack could do to this nation, but the threat is very real.  There was even a congressional commission that studied the potential effects of an EMP attack on the United States for eight years...

The US Congress in 2000 established the Congressional Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack. In 2004, the committee produced a 70-page executive summary on the EMP threat, and it issued a final report on the matter in 2008. According to the report, “several potential adversaries have or can acquire the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication.”
Dr. William Graham was the chairman of that commission, and he says that an EMP attack could knock the United States back into the 1800s in just a single moment...

An EMP attack “could not only take down power grids, which are fragile anyway in this country, and telecommunications networks, and financial networks, and traffic controls and many other things, but in addition, there is a very close interrelationship among those national infrastructure capabilities,” Graham says.

“So, for example, we need telecommunications to re-establish the power network, and we need the power network to keep telecommunications going for more than a few hours. And we need the financial network to continue to operate to maintain the economy, we need the transportation system, roads, street lights, control systems, to operate just to get people to the failed power, telecommunication and other systems,” he adds.

Life after an EMP attack “would probably be something that you might imagine life to be like around the late 1800s but with several times the population we had in those days, and without the ability of the country to support and sustain all those people,” Graham says. “They wouldn’t have power. Food supplies would be greatly taken out by the lack of transportation, telecommunication, power for refrigeration and so on.”
Unfortunately, very few of us are equipped to survive in such an environment.  We have become incredibly dependent on technology, and most Americans would have no idea how to do something as simple as growing their own food.  Most people would be in a very serious amount of trouble in a very short period of time.

An article by Mac Slavo detailed some of the things that we could expect in the aftermath of a massive electromagnetic pulse...

The first 24 – 48 hours after such an occurrence will lead to confusion among the general population as traditional news acquisition sources like television, radio and cell phone networks will be non-functional.

Within a matter of days, once people realize the power might not be coming back on and grocery store shelves start emptying, the entire system will begin to delve into chaos.

Within 30 days a mass die off will have begun as food supplies dwindle, looters and gangs turn to violent extremes, medicine can’t be restocked and water pump stations fail.
Are you prepared for such an event?

If not, why not?

And actually, high altitude nuclear explosions and solar storms are not the only things that could produce sizable EMP bursts.

For example, the U.S. military has developed "a directed electromagnetic pulse gun" that can take out all electronics within a limited area.  This kind of weapon can be fired from a plane, a cruise missile or even a drone.  The following is from a recent WND article...

A pre-programmed cruise missile not too different from a drone has been proven to be capable of blasting out an EMP-type microwave that was able to destroy personal computers and electrical systems inside a building over which it was flying.

The U.S. Air Force and its contractor Boeing have created the High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project, or CHAMP, which was just tested over a Utah desert.
Other nations such as Russia and China are busy developing similar weapons.  The ability to instantly take out the electronics of the enemy would be a very powerful advantage.

Even North Korea has been working on this kind of technology.  According to Newsmax, it is believed that they may have tested a "Super-EMP" weapon back in 2009…

North Korea’s last round of tests, conducted in May 2009, appear to have included a “super-EMP” weapon, capable of emitting enough gamma rays to disable the electric power grid across most of the lower 48 states
As this technology becomes more widespread, it will soon be accessible to just about everyone.  You don't actually need a nuclear weapon to set off a massive electromagnetic pulse.  A non-nuclear pulse generator can do the same thing.  If you set one off next to a power station you could potentially take out the electrical grid for an entire region.

Terrorist groups and lone wolf crazies could even use portable radio frequency weapons to do a tremendous amount of electromagnetic damage over a more limited area.  The following is from a recent article by F. Michael Maloof...

Such an individual with a penchant for electronics can pull together components from a Radio Shack or electronic store – even order the components off of selected Internet websites – and fashion a radio frequency, or RF, weapon.

As microprocessors become smaller but more sophisticated, they are even more susceptible to an RF pulse. The high power microwave from an RF weapon produces a short, very high power pulse, said to be billions of watts in a nanosecond, or billionths of a second.

This so-called burst of electromagnetic waves in the gigahertz microwave frequency band can melt electrical circuitry and damage integrated circuits, causing them to fail.
Constructing a radio frequency weapon is not that difficult.  In fact, you can find instructions for how to build them on the Internet.

People need to realize that we live in a world where technology is absolutely exploding and we are dealing with threats that previous generations never even dreamed of.  As the world becomes increasingly unstable, it is inevitable that these kinds of weapons will be used.

It is only a matter of time.

What will life look like after an EMP weapon is used?

That is something to think about.

And we also need to keep watching the sun.  It could produce a massive electromagnetic pulse at literally any moment.  As I have written about previously, scientists tell us that it is only a matter of time before we are hit with a technology-crippling solar super storm.

Most people don't even realize that the massive solar storm of 1859 fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.  If such a storm hit us today, the damage would potentially be in the trillions of dollars.  The following is from a recent New York Times article…

A powerful solar (or “geomagnetic”) storm has the potential to simultaneously damage multiple transformers in the electricity grid and perhaps even bring down large sections of it, affecting upwards of a hundred million people in the United States for many months, if not years.

These huge transformers are expensive and difficult to replace, and not many are stockpiled in the United States for an emergency. In the worst case, the impact would be devastating: An outage could cost a few trillion dollars, with full recovery taking years. Not only would parts of the grid be compromised, but telephone networks, undersea cables, satellites and railroads also would be affected.

A 2008 National Academy of Sciences study warned that “because of the interconnectedness of critical infrastructures in modern society,” the “collateral effects of a longer-term outage” would likely include “disruption of the transportation, communication, banking and finance systems, and government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing to pump failure; and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of lack of refrigeration.”
By the way, 2013 is the peak of the current solar cycle.  So we are moving into a time period when conditions will be very favorable for solar storms.

Let us hope that we are never hit with a massive electromagnetic pulse that is strong enough to take out all of our electronics.

What Are You Going To Do When A Massive EMP Blast Fries The U.S. Electrical Grid?

It is only a matter of time before a massive EMP burst fries the U.S. electrical grid.  What that happens, how are you going to survive?  In the United States today, we are completely and totally dependent on electrical power.  Unless you are Amish (or are a part of a similar community), you probably have absolutely no idea how to survive in a world without electricity.  Unfortunately, our electrical grid is extremely vulnerable at this point.  As you will see below, intelligence officials believe that China and Russia already have “super-EMP weapons”, and a whole host of smaller nations and terrorist groups are believed to be working on developing similar weapons.  But even if the U.S. is never attacked by an EMP weapon, scientists tell us that it is inevitable that a massive solar storm will fry our electrical grid someday.  If an event similar to the solar storm of 1859 happened today, it would be absolutely catastrophic.  Known as “the Carrington Event”, that massive solar storm fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.  At some point we will experience another such solar storm, and some scientists believe that we are already 50 years overdue for another one.  In fact, the earth had a “near miss” just a few months ago.
 
So what will happen if we are hit by a massive EMP blast?  Well, according to a government commission that investigated this issue, approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population could potentially die from starvation, disease and societal chaos within one year.  It would be a disaster unlike anything that we have ever seen before in U.S. history.
 
Frank Gaffney, the president of the Center for Security Policy, is even more pessimistic.  He believes that a single EMP blast could potentially end up killing almost the entire population of the United States…
 

“Within a year of that attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can’t support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity”
 
As a society, we are simply not equipped to function without electricity.  Dr. William Graham was the chairman of the government commission that I mentioned above, and he says that a giant EMP blast could knock the United States back into “the late 1800s” in just a single moment…

If the earth is hit by a direct solar flare, some of which can be 14 times the size of the earth, scientists from NASA and the National Academy of Sciences say it would cost the nation alone up to $2 trillion in the first year. It could take four to 10 years to recover and affect 90 percent of the U.S. population, meaning widespread starvation and death.
 
So what would life look like for you and your family if this happened?
 
Consider the following…
 
-There would be no heat for your home.
 
-Water would no longer be pumped into most homes.
 
-Your computer would not work.
 
-There would be no Internet.
 
-Your phones would not work.
 
-There would be no television.
 
-There would be no radio.
 
-ATM machines would be shut down.
 
-There would be no banking.
 
-Your debit cards and credit cards would not work.
 
-Without electricity, gas stations would not be functioning.
 
-Most people would be unable to do their jobs without electricity and employment would collapse.
 
-Commerce would be brought to a standstill.
 
-Hospitals would not be able to function.
 
-You would quickly start running out of medicine.
 
-All refrigeration would shut down and frozen foods in our homes and supermarkets would start to go bad.
 
-Some vehicles would no longer be able to start at all.
 
-Traffic lights would no longer be working.
 
-Airplanes would not be able to go anywhere.
 
-Wall Street would not be able to function at all.
 
-Government services would collapse.

Absolutely nothing.
 
In fact, according to a recent WND article, ex-CIA Director Michael Hayden says that the Obama administration has no plans to defend us against an EMP blast…
 

Contrary to the findings of a 2008 commission mandated by Congress to consider a defense against an electromagnetic pulse attack and its effects on the national grid, a retired Air Force general who also headed the National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency says that there isn’t a solution to an EMP attack.
 
Speaking before the Bipartisan Policy Center at a conference on the threats to the U.S. electrical grid, Michael Hayden also said the Obama administration has no plan to defend against an EMP.
 
In fact, Hayden says that “there really aren’t any solutions” to this problem…
 

“I don’t mean to be so flippant, but there really aren’t any solutions to this, so I would just leave it at that,” Hayden said.
 
Of course that is a complete and total lie.  It would take less than a billion dollars to protect the largest transformers in our electrical grid.  But the Obama administration refuses to do it.
 
Since the Obama administration is doing nothing, some state government officials are now considering taking action…
 

At the National Council of State Legislatures last week in Atlanta, a number of lawmakers said they’re preparing legislation similar to a bill introduced in Maine recently did under the leadership of Rep. Andrea Boland.
 
Efforts are under way to press the membership of the NCSL to address the EMP issue, since the federal government has failed to take action to mitigate the potential for a catastrophic event, whether natural or man-made. An EMP event could knock out the U.S. electrical grid system and the critical infrastructures that rely on it.
 
Along with the national electrical grid, other critical infrastructures include telecommunications, banking and financial transactions, oil and natural gas pipelines, transportation, food and water delivery, emergency services and space systems.
 
In short, an EMP event could cause the collapse of society.
 
And without a doubt, our electrical grid represents the “soft underbelly” of U.S. infrastructure.  Attacks on the electrical grid happen all the time, but most of them are not reported by the mainstream media.  The following report of an attack is from a recent Forbes article…
 

More than 10,000 people in Arkansas were dumped into a blackout Sunday following an attack on that state’s electric grid, the FBI said today, the third such attack in recent weeks. In August, a major transmission line in the region, around Cabot, Ark., was deliberately cut.
 
The FBI said that two power poles had been intentionally cut in Lonoke County on Sunday, resulting in the outage.
 
The following is how the FBI described the attack…
 

In the early morning hours of September 29, 2013, officials with Entergy Arkansas reported a fire at its Keo substation located on Arkansas Highway 165 between Scott and England in Lonoke County. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no reported power outages. Investigation has determined that the fire, which consumed the control house at the substation, was intentionally set. The person or persons responsible for this incident inscribed a message on a metal control panel outside the substation which reads, ‘YOU SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED U.S.’
 
But minor attacks like that are nothing compared to what an EMP weapon could potentially do to our electrical grid.
 
And our strategic enemies have been working on developing such weapons.  The following is a short excerpt from a statement by Dr. Peter Vincent Pry to the United States Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security on March 8th, 2005…
 

Russian and Chinese military scientists in open source writings describe the basic principles of nuclear weapons designed specifically to generate an enhanced-EMP effect, that they term “Super-EMP” weapons. “Super-EMP” weapons, according to these foreign open source writings, can destroy even the best protected U.S. military and civilian electronic systems.
 
But it is not just Russia and China that we need to be worried about.
 
According to Pry, North Korea also has such weapons…
 

Pry pointed out that South Korean military intelligence has warned not only their government but also the U.S. that North Korea is developing super-EMP warheads with Russian help.
 
In 2011, Pry pointed out, a military commentator with the People’s Republic of China stated that North Korea has super-EMP warheads. Data from North Korea’s nuclear tests, he said, are consistent with a super-EMP warhead.
 
And it should be noted that it is very possible to create a devastating EMP burst without exploding a nuke high up in the atmosphere.  In fact, the U.S. and other nations have been very busy working on such weapons.  For example, the U.S. military has reportedly developed “a directed electromagnetic pulse gun” that can take out all electronics within a limited area.  This kind of EMP weapon can be fired from a plane, a cruise missile or even a drone.  The following is how this class of weapon was described in a WND article…

This is just my opinion, but I think the rapture of the church will end up triggering this worldwide EMP(until the Antichrist comes in afterwards).

Even people in the MSM like Newt Gingrich are warning about this impending EMP - which says a lot!

IRS Advises of Power Outage Ahead of Grid Ex Electricity Drill: “This service will be unavailable”

Next week on November 13th and 14th the Department of Homeland Security will be engaging in a widespread power outage drill involving scores of international government agencies and business in an effort to test the viability of a national response plan in the event of a cyber attack, electro-magnetic pulse attack or solar flare.
 
The Grid Ex II drill has left many concerned that it may coincide with an actual “false flag” attack, much like similar drills that were taking place on September 11th, as well as in Boston during the recent bombing.
 
Speculation abounds about the coming power grid drills, and a recent alert issued by the IRS.gov web site isn’t helping quell fears.
 
The following message has appeared on at least 50 pages of the IRS.gov web site within the last 48 hours, though the alert is not being displayed on most areas of the site:
 
Planned Outage: November 9 — November 12, 2013
 
This service will be unavailable beginning approximately 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 9, 2013 until approximately 7:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, due to a power outage. We apologize for any inconvenience.

IRS Advises of Power Outage Ahead of Grid Ex Electricity Drill: “This service will be unavailable”

Next week on November 13th and 14th the Department of Homeland Security will be engaging in a widespread power outage drill involving scores of international government agencies and business in an effort to test the viability of a national response plan in the event of a cyber attack, electro-magnetic pulse attack or solar flare.

The most likely source is active sunspot AR1890, which has already produced three X-flares since Nov. 5th. In addition, a new flare threat is emerging over the sun's SE limb: Sunspot group AR1895 appears to be big and potent enough to produce some explosions of its own during the next 25 hours.

Grid EX II and Martial Law Using Foreign Mercenaries

The upcoming Grid EX II drill, taking place on November 13th, is ostensibly designed to simulate a power grid take down which would endanger the safety of millions of Americans. The two primary goals of the drill consist of preparations for an attack upon the grid and the use of foreign military assets to support the drill. The scenario is premised on the notion that the attacks will be primarily nuclear in origin.

Many have been wondering if the November 13th Grid EX II drill is going to result in a false flag attack in which the power grid of United States will be taken down and martial law will be implemented and enforced through the use of foreign mercenaries.

Certainly, the false flag nature of the 9/11 attacks, the 7/7 London bombings and the Boston Marathon bombings certainly provides some degree of credence to these suspicions. However, I’ve been wondering if the Grid Ex drill would be the same as the Boston Marathon bombings. The answer is both yes and no, but first let’s look at the requisite and related background facts.

“We Can No Longer Just Depend On Our Military…”
Presidential candidate, Obama, made a bold 2008 campaign announcement regarding the use of private assets (i.e. Brown Shirts) in order to fulfill his national security goals as he made the following statement:

There are some campaign promises that this president has fulfilled. It is clear, in the present context, that Obama was promising to raise an army of “Brown Shirts” that “would be just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded”. This civilian national security force is a three-headed monster. DHS, along with its acquisition of 2.2 billion rounds of ammunition and its 2700 armored personnel carriers, is the executive head of this new army of unconstitutional thugs which will head the upcoming martial law enforcement troops. The other two parts of this force would be the Chinese and Russian soldiers who are presently training on American soil during the upcoming Grid EX II drill. I have just described the composition of the new martial law enforcement army and all of us should be highly concerned.

The Russians Are Our Enemy

Several weeks ago on my talk show, I posed the open question as to why FEMA would sign a bilateral agreement with the Russian military to permit Russians to train on American soil. My most immediate concern has to do with the fact that Russians have repeatedly threatened to nuke the United States if we invaded Syria or Iran in the fall of 2012. I also raised the point that FEMA is a Federal agency designed to respond to natural disasters. Why would we need the Russian military to help us with a response to a natural disaster? Are the National Guard units going to be disbanded? Has our military grown so inept that they cannot be counted on? Or, is it more likely that the Russians will not hesitate to fire on American citizens during a martial law crackdown, subsequent gun confiscation as well as the deportation of dissident Americans to re-education camps?

The following is a quote from the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry:

“The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry and the USA Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are going to exchange experts during joint rescue operations in major disasters. This is provided by a protocol of the fourth meeting of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission Working Group on Emergency Situations and seventeenth meeting of Joint U.S.-Russia Cooperation Committee on Emergency Situations, which took place in Washington on 25 June.

The document provides for expert cooperation in disaster response operations and to study the latest practices. In addition, the parties approved of U.S.-Russian cooperation in this field in 2013-2014, which envisages exchange of experience including in monitoring and forecasting emergency situations, training of rescuers, development of mine-rescuing and provision of security at mass events.”

Don’t be deceived America, this is not just another example of international cooperation between two nations. As far back January of 2012, Russia threatened nuclear war and the threat was issued by the outgoing Russian ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, when he said that “Russia has given Iran its bear hug and warns Israel and the West that an attack on Tehran would be considered an attack on Moscow”….

The nuclear attack threatened of the former Russian NATO ambassador is not the only time that the Russians have threatened to nuke the United States. Two years ago, the Russians threatened to nuke targeted American sites in retaliation for a nuclear shield that the US erected in Europe. The unmistakable conclusion is that the Russian government is an enemy of the United States and as such their military does not belong on our soil in any way shape or form.

Not only will Russian troops be used in the upcoming Grid EX II drill, they will be used to police major events on American soil. This is martial law desensitization training in which the Russians are trained to interact with American citizens. In short, these enemies of the Republic are a part of the new martial law enforcement troops and this development defies belief.

 Obama has opened the backdoor and let our enemies in the country in this version of the ultimate “Trojan Horse” scenario. This also explains why Obama is turning the United States military upside down on its ear with his endless series of purges of our military leadership. Obama knows that most of our present military leadership is not on board with the treason coming out of the White House. Therefore, Obama is reshuffling the deck in an attempt to find American generals and admirals who will do his unconstitutional bidding.

The Chinese Are Our Enemy

For the first time in American military history, the United States is allowing the communist Chinese troops to train on American soil. Like the Russians, the Chinese military will be a part of the upcoming Grid EX II drill in which they will be providing military support by a simulated attack of a rogue “third world nation” upon the US and its power grid infrastructure. The Chinese will have boots on the ground from November 12-14 in Hawaii.

This is an incredible act of treason being committed by the White House. The Chinese government is the enemy of the American people. Just like Russia, the Chinese have threatened to nuke the United States over a potential invasion of Syria and Iran. Just like Russia, the Chinese have been involved in the purchase of Iranian oil for gold which undermines the Petrodollar. The latter is a direct attack on the United States economy. In my book, when a nation threatens to nuke us and attacks our economic interests, they should be considered to be a hostile enemy and should be kept at arm’s length.

The leader of the Communist regime’s delegation, Major General Zhu, became infamous worldwide after telling reporters in 2005 that the dictatorship in Beijing would deploy nuclear weapons against major American cities in the event of a conflict over Taiwan. Further, both Chinese President Hu and Major General Zhang Zhaozhong have threatened the United States with nuclear war if they invade either Iran or Syria.

Do the above statements sound like the statements of a trusted friend that we should let be a part of a highly sensitive operation involving the defense of our power grid? What is more likely, is that the Chinese, like the Russians, are receiving martial law training on American soil in the upcoming Grid EX II drill.

Interestingly, the only nation on the face of the earth which possesses a sufficient number of troops to effectively garrison the United States is China. Military estimates tell us that six million troops would be needed to occupy this country in a martial law takeover. The Chinese certainly have that capability. Hawaii would prove to be an optimal staging from which to send massive amounts of Chinese soldiers to this country in order to enforce martial law. Could the Grid EX II drill also provide cover for a Chinese military buildup on American soil? And why would the Chinese be willing to engage in such an undertaking?

The Chinese own much of our debt. It is not hard to conceive of the fact that the IMF would strike a deal with the Chinese which promised debt collection through rhe seizure of American hard assets in exchange for occupying the country.

Obama Is a Traitor

Before you Obama supporters tell me that this president would not be this stupid, or this president would never be that treasonous so as to endanger the country by using troops from enemy countries to participate in a highly sensitive exercise with huge national security implications, I would refer you to a previous article that I wrote on the fact that Obama was bred by communists, raised by communists and had his political career launched by communists to do what he’s doing today. This is not hyperbole, these are well documented facts that I would encourage all skeptics to read by clicking on the hypertext links, view the evidence for yourself and then do your own research. There is only one correct interpretation. Obama was put into office to deindustrialize the US through the introduction of cap and trade policies and to destroy the sovereignty and individual civil liberties of American citizens by putting the country under martial law. He is succeeding on both fronts.

We in the alternative media, do not have time to deal with the skepticism of America’s sheep any longer. The situation is dire and deserves immediate attention and exposure if we have any hope of turning back the dark future that some have planned for the citizens of this country. It might already be too late.

The short answer to this problem is that this president needs to be impeached and immediately removed from office.

Grid EX II On November 13-14

Will the upcoming Grid EX II drill be a cover for a massive false flag attack that will usher in the final destruction of civil liberties and imposition of martial law? Although I share many of colleagues concerns regarding the false flag possibilities for this week’s drill, I’ve concluded that the upcoming drill is just what seems to be, a drill. However, it is a drill with a serious and ominous twist as I have grave concerns that Russian and Chinese troops are a part of this drill.

As the Boston Marathon bombings ended up being a dress rehearsal for martial law, so too is the Grid EX II drill a dress rehearsal for a false flag attack upon American soil involving the take down of the power grid at some future date. This will be followed by a declaration of martial law and will be enforced by foreign troops, under the direction of DHS, who will not hesitate to shoot and kill noncompliant American citizens.

I would challenge anyone reading these words to provide me with the slightest bit of justification in relation as to why the major enemies of our Republic, namely China and Russia, are being permitted anywhere near a sensitive drill such as the Grid EX II drill. China and Russia are clear enemies of the United States and do not belong anywhere within our territorial boundaries for any purpose whatsoever, especially near a highly sensitive emergency drill.

If this is too far-fetched for your worldview, then please tell me what are these foreign troops doing here? Is America that short on traffic cops, that low on Highway Patrolmen or are we expecting an alien invasion from Alpha Centauri and we need the Russian and Chinese firepower? There is nothing short of the ridiculous that justifies this kind of treason that we see coming out of the White House.

Relevant DOD Video

In August of 2008, I attended a town hall meeting sponsored by Congressman Trent Franks that was held at my local church. Franks played a 20 minute Department of Defense video which was based on the scenario of terrorists detonating two nuclear weapons high above the mid Continental United States. The resulting explosions produced and EMP burst which took down the electrical power grid. The video mentioned that the Naval War College also conducted a study in which it was determined that within two years following this event, 90% of all Americans would be dead. The Naval War College/DOD scenario reminds one of the television show, Revolution. Congressman Franks attempted to use this DOD creation as a justification to increase military spending. Five years later, I view this presentation is a portend of things to come.

Ask yourself an important question, if the United States ever experienced multiple a series of nuclear bomb detonations, who would be in charge of rescue and forced relocation efforts? The answer is the very agency who has signed a bilateral agreement with Russia to train for emergencies. It would be the very agency who will be working with the Communist Chinese military in Hawaii on November 12 through the 14th. That agency would be FEMA who operates under the direction of DHS. These are the two agencies who are primarily responsible for implementing the Grid EX II drill which is utilizing Chinese and Russian troops.

Conclusion

Did you know that this drill is being “managed” by the Security Prosperity Partnership (SPP)?  SPP is the North American Union. The announcement of Grid EX II was released, not on FEMA’s website, but on SPP.gov. This is a clever move which allows for elite to more effectively manage this drill for their own purposes.

Although I cannot discount the fears that many have that Grid EX II is a false flag operation in the works, I think it more likely that this is a dress rehearsal trial run for the real event. I do, however, believe that in the future we will see a power grid take down, followed by the declaration of martial law and the use of enemy foreign troops to enforce that martial law. I also believe that the it is likely that a future grid take down will also include a banking take down, as well, that will occur the third day of the blackout when people are rioting for food and too occupied to notice. This would allow the central bankers to establish a new world currency under the literal cover of darkness.

I think some individual caution is in order in preparation for this week’s events. However, I strongly believe that the worst is yet to come.

Bringing in foreign "peace keepers" is a UN tactic in their efforts to govern the world.

It's not about being inept at all. It's about who owes what allegiance to whom is how I see it.

Chinese troops are set to take part in disaster relief exercises in Hawaii Tuesday, in what China's state media billed as the first time the country's soldiers have drilled on U.S. territory.

People's Liberation Army soldiers will take part in humanitarian assistance drills in Hawaii until Thursday with the U.S. Army Pacific and Hawaii Army National Guard, simulating relief operations after an earthquake hits a third country, according to a report on the website of the Communist Party's People's Daily newspaper.

On Thursday, U.S. Army and People's Liberation Army soldiers will train in a field exercise at Bellows Air Force Base.

Officials say the first two days of the exchange will be academic, while the field work will include practice with field equipment.

The exchange is an annual exercise that is part of a security cooperation agreement established in 1998.

Last year in China, military officials discussed how they would respond to an earthquake.

The drills, which follow a series of naval exercises off Hawaii in September, reflect deepened military ties between the U.S. and China even as they square off over allegations of Chinese military hacking and China's territorial disputes with U.S. allies Japan and the Philippines.

Chinese ships are set to take part next year in the RIMPAC war games off the Hawaiian coast, multinational exercises that bring together militaries from across the Pacific Rim. While China has observed RIMPAC before, 2014 will mark the first time it's ever joined the drills.

Even as cooperation intensifies, competition between the two militaries is also on the rise. China's defense budget has more than doubled since 2006 and last year it commissioned its first aircraft carrier.

Still, the U.S. defense budget, the world's largest, is five times the size of China's announced military spending.

Admiral Samuel Locklear, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, told reporters Nov. 5 that the Hawaii drills will help foster trust.

"These types of exercises give us a good place to start and to kind of get into the rhythm of understanding and trusting each other," Locklear said. "I think it'll be a great exercise."

Sun's flipping poles could mean lights out for U.S.
Dark news for readiness of national electric grid


A vulnerability test by the electric-power industry of the national electrical grid shows the system would fail during certain catastrophes –  and would fail even if only some of the impacts of certain catastrophes were experienced.

That is the sobering message from a preliminary readout of the results of a vulnerability test called Grid Ex II.

It revealed that even though the test was done under circumstances that didn’t represent the full impact of what would occur in the event of a grid blackout – caused either by a cyber or electromagnetic pulse attack – the system failed.

The North American Electric Power Reliability Corporation, or NERC, led the nationwide exercise to examine just how vulnerable the nation’s electric power grid would be under a limited nationwide cyber or EMP attack.

The test, regarded by experts as presenting less of an impact than a real EMP, comes as the sun is about to “flip” its own magnetic poles at the peak of its expected 11-year cycle.

The sun flips the polarity of its magnetic north and south, causing huge intergalactic geomagnetic storms which can affect the earth’s grid and communications including satellites.

The sun’s 11-year cycle started peaking a few months ago, and will continue through 2014, according to NASA scientists.

Todd Hoeksema, director of the Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford University, said the polarity change builds up throughout the 11-year cycle, and the sun’s magnetic field goes to zero before coming back with the opposite polarity.

It is during that time that flares sometimes are huge, and if one hit the earth directly, it could deliver a life-changing EMP blast.

“Something big is about to happen on the sun,” according to an August 2013 NASA statement. At the time, Hoeksema said the big event, the solar flip, was three to four months away – placing that time in a November-December 2013 time-frame.

When that happens, cosmic rays (which are high-energy particles) accelerate to nearly the speed of light by supernova explosions and other violent events in the galaxy that could have a major impact on the electrical grid if earth sustained a direct hit.

As space scientists watch the effects of the solar flip, that is, the reversal of its magnetic polarity, the utilities in the U.S. undertook the limited test of the grid called Grid Ex II.

While the final results won’t be known until they are published months from now, experts said the impact scenario created by the drill fell far short of what would occur in the event of a real EMP – which would greatly diminish or even knock out the grid and life-sustaining critical infrastructures that rely on the grid to function.

The two-day Grid Ex II exercise revealed what Matthew Weld in a Nov. 14 New York Times article said put tens of millions of Americans in simulated darkness, with hundreds of transmission lines and transformers declared damaged or destroyed and “the engineers … rushing to assess computers that were, for the purposes of the drill, tearing their system apart.”

The fragility of the national grid was illustrated in real life in 2003 by a cascading power grid failure from Ohio throughout the northeastern United States and into Canada.

It left 50 million people without power for at least 30 hours, and up to four days in a number of cases. And it showed real-life conditions of an entire region being without water, food, transportation and other life-sustaining critical infrastructure necessities. It also showed how dysfunctional the national grid regulation was, revealing that no central authority was in charge of operations of hundreds of power companies.

That remains the case even now.

Efforts have been made in the past three sessions of Congress to give the Federal Electric Regulatory Commission, or FERC, authority over the hundreds of power companies to regulate integrated operations of the grid.

During that time, legislation such as the SHIELD Act has been introduced and passed with overwhelming support in the House, but failed to pass the Senate.

Last June, Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., along with 24 co-sponsors, introduced the Secure High-voltage Infrastructure for Electricity from Lethal Damage Act, HR 2417.

It would give FERC the authority to protect the reliability of either the bulk power system or the defense critical electric infrastructure whenever the president issues a determination identifying an imminent grid security threat.

“The electric power lobby has managed to block passage of these bills, now proposed in the third congress in a row,” said former Ambassador Henry Cooper, director of the Strategic Defense Initiative under President George H. W. Bush and now one of the leaders of the newly formed EMP Coalition.

“In particular, the NERC has irresponsibly denied the reality of existential threats such as from natural or man-made electromagnetic pulse (EMP) events,” Cooper said.

“Such activities as NERC’s Grid Ex II exercise are academically interesting, but actually do little to deal with this serious threat, now well known for over a decade, including by our enemies and terrorists,” he said.

Cooper said that time is being wasted by such piecemeal exercises as Grid Ex II every other year which, he said, seems to be NERC’s anticipated pattern.

He pointed out that this most recent exercise included the use of telecommunications.

“Maybe the next one – e.g., two years from now – will examine what happens without communications, sure to be lost in an EMP event – or even (in) a competent terrorist cyber-attack.”

Cooper insisted there are “affordable fixes” for the national electric power grid’s vulnerability, and added: “Cost should not be an issue. Current estimates are that several hundred million dollars may be needed to harden the key elements of the electric power grid to EMP, to protect perhaps a trillion dollar investment … and more importantly the lives of several hundred million Americans.”

Double Threat: US Grid Vulnerable On Two Fronts

Consensus is growing that the U.S. electricity grid is vulnerable to both hacking and physical attacks, but protecting it remains a work in progress—especially given the spending that would be necessary by financially stretched utilities. The risks have heightened the calls for officials to address potential threats before they become reality. In November, the North American Energy Reliability Corp. staged a simulated attack on the grid; meanwhile, House Energy and Commerce Committee ranking member Rep. Henry Waxman, D.-Calif., flagged the grid as "not adequately protected" from either cyber or physical attacks at a hearing in December. M. Granger Morgan, the head of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, told CNBC that a physical attack on the grid poses a "much greater threat" than a cyberattack. Still, he added that vulnerabilities within the technological network of the power system itself require "real and urgent attenuation."

The Congressman Who Went Off the Grid
 
Roscoe Bartlett spent 20 years on Capitol Hill. Now he lives in a remote cabin in the woods, prepping for doomsday.


hen Roscoe Bartlett was in Congress, he latched onto a particularly apocalyptic issue, one almost no one else ever seemed to talk about: America’s dangerously vulnerable power grid. In speech after late-night speech on the House floor, Bartlett hectored the nearly empty chamber: If the United States doesn’t do something to protect the grid, and soon, a terrorist or an act of nature will put an end to life as we know it.
 
Bartlett loved to conjure doomsday visions: Think post-Sandy New York City without power—but spread over a much larger area for months at a time. He once recounted a conversation he claimed to have had with unnamed Russian officials about how they could take out the United States: They would “detonate a nuclear weapon high above your country,” he recalled them saying, “and shut down your power grid—and your communications—for six months or so.”

Bartlett never gained much traction with his scary talk of electromagnetic pulses and solar storms. More immediate concerns always seemed to preoccupy his colleagues, or perhaps Bartlett’s obsessions just sounded more like quackery than real science, even coming from a former Navy engineer who had worked on the space race. Whatever the reason, Congress’s failure to act is no longer Bartlett’s problem. The octogenarian Republican from western Maryland—more than once labeled “the oddest congressman”—found himself gerrymandered out of office a year ago and promptly decided to take action on the warnings others wouldn’t heed, retreating to a remote property in the mountains of West Virginia where he lives with no phone service, no connection to outside power and no municipal plumbing. Having failed to safeguard the power grid for the rest of the country, Bartlett has taken himself completely off the grid. He has finally done what he pleaded in vain for others to do: “to become,” as he put it in a 2009 documentary, “independent of the system.”
 
I visited Bartlett this past fall, following a set of maze-like directions—take a series of different forks in the road and look for the one paved driveway that turns off a narrow, rocky dirt road—as I climbed to nearly 4,000 feet, one of the highest U.S. elevations east of the Rocky Mountains. I lost cell phone service halfway into the four-hour drive from Washington and never got it back. The nearest shopping mall is more than an hour’s drive away.

When I arrived, Bartlett greeted me in faded denim overalls and an unruly white beard and asked if anything had happened since he was last in Maryland, about a week earlier. I told him that the National Security Agency had just been caught tapping into the connections between data centers run by Google and Yahoo. He looked nonplussed.

Limiting the role of government consumed much of his life for the 20 years he spent in Congress, leaving little time simply to sit by his lake and watch the sun go down and the bats come out. But nowadays, his concerns center around when the next frost will come and keeping mice out of the food pantries. He’s more interested in pointing out the different species of trees on his property or showing off his new composting toilet than discussing Obamacare (“just awful”) or the government shutdown (“lots of people realized we could get along just fine without the government”).

“You know,” he said after a pause, “the news now is like a soap opera. If you miss it for a week, you haven’t missed much.”

“People ask me ‘Why?’” Bartlett says as he is showing me around. “And I ask people why you climb Mount Everest. It’s a challenge, and it’s challenging to think what life would be like if there weren’t any grid and there weren’t any grocery stores. That’s what life was like for our forefathers.”

At 87, Bartlett hardly needs a reason to justify getting far away from the hustle and stress of Capitol Hill. There are no more votes to go back for, no more campaigning to do after nearly two decades as by far the most conservative member of Congress from the generally liberal state of Maryland. But he hasn’t fully withdrawn from society: Every couple weeks, he shaves, puts his suit back on and heads to Washington, where he serves as a senior consultant for Lineage Technologies, a cybersecurity group that seeks to protect supply chains. (“I don’t need to work, but I want to be responsible,” he says. “There are problems that need fixing, and I have some insight into these things.”)

Not that his life out here in the mountains is anyone’s idea of retirement. He rises at dawn every day except Saturday (he’s a Seventh Day Adventist) and spends 10 to 12 hours cutting logs, tending gardens and painting walls. I ask Bartlett, as he climbs a ladder to an attic, if he has ever had any health problems. No, he says, besides a little arthritis and acid reflux. He may be pushing 90, but his weathered skin, hearing aid and walking stick are the only reasons you’d think he’s gotten old. When his wife suggests we use “the Gator,” a John Deere golf cart-like vehicle, to tour their refuge, he refuses, preferring to go by foot.

Bartlett bought the 153-acre property in the early 1980s for $80,000 and built the five cabins himself, wiring the solar panels and running pipes from a freshwater spring to the cabins, work that consumed him on and off for the last couple decades. When he was a congressman, he would take his recesses and “working holidays” here, working on the cabins during the day and reading legislation at night. Now he’s midway through putting up a sixth house, a log cabin that will have a spacious kitchen, bathrooms with composting toilets, Internet access via satellite and a root cellar to store cabbage and potatoes through the winter. (Besides being more comfortable than his existing cabin, he needs the space to house his 10 adult children and their families, should his doomsday scenario come true.) The property also has a sawmill, a one-acre manmade lake with two pet swans, a gatehouse that arches over the long driveway and several gardens. It’s surrounded by mountains and wild apple trees and bears and tiny plants called club moss that look like pine trees if you get close. He’s got a mill for grinding flour, and on the day I visit his wife has whipped up potato onion soup made from produce grown in the garden and apple turnovers with apples that grow nearby.
 
It’s all part of practicing what you preach, he says. In Bartlett’s case, that’s a lifestyle that relies on the government and other people as little as possible. Certainly, that was always his political platform; as the congressman from Maryland’s 6th district, he advocated limited government, living within one’s means—and, more surprising perhaps for a conservative Republican, expanding green energy. In 2005, he founded the Peak Oil Caucus, a group concerned that the world will soon deplete its supply of oil. (“Roscoe was green before it was cool to be green,” Maryland Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer once said.) He’s staunchly anti-abortion but searched for middle ground on stem cell research, and he’s a Second Amendment proponent who has never owned a gun. The Washington Post once wrote that Bartlett had a “quirky, down-home conservative style,” and among his colleagues in Washington there was a clear sense that this was not just another cookie-cutter congressman: Bartlett, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.) once said diplomatically, “comes at things from different angles.”

Bartlett was born in Kentucky in 1926. When he was an infant, his family moved to western Pennsylvania, where, he tells me, he “grew up dirt poor on a tenant farm.” It was there that he picked up most of the skills he has used to make life comfortable in his West Virginia retreat, and it’s also that upbringing that moved him to go into public service, after a science career that saw him go through IBM in its start-up years and the U.S. Navy as an engineer, before becoming director of the Space Life Sciences research group at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where he helped the U.S. win the space race by, among other things, developing a device that allows astronauts to breathe at high altitudes and low temperatures.
 
“Growing up on a farm, you just learn to make do. You couldn’t possibly make enough money to hire an electrician or a plumber,” he says. “I went to the Navy, and they had some problems and I thought, ‘Gee, I can fix that.’ And I ended up getting 19 patents.”

He worked his way through school, eventually earning a doctorate in physiology from the University of Maryland. In addition to working as an engineer, farmer and professor, he ran a consulting company and a construction business that built homes with solar power. While in Congress he reported a net worth of as much as $8 million. He got into politics at a time when, as he saw it, a rags-to-riches story like his own was becoming less possible.

“We were poor before the Depression, and we were poor after the Depression. But then I got a bachelor’s and a master’s and a doctorate,” he says. “I just thought that that kind of America I grew up in, where you could do that, wouldn’t be there for my kids.”

On the Hill, Bartlett voted against minimum wage increases, against bailing out the Postal Service and against expanding government in any meaningful way. He may have been green before it was cool, but he also was a Tea Party-style libertarian before there was a Tea Party. (During his last campaign he got into trouble for saying that federal student loans were unconstitutional and that ignoring the Constitution is a “slippery slope” that can lead to events like the Holocaust.)

So it’s no surprise that his decision on where to retreat from the world after Congress was all about escaping the heavy hand of government regulation.

“I wanted some privacy, and as far as I know, there are no inspections here for anything,” he says. “No permitting, no inspections. In Maryland, you pay taxes and think you own your land, but you really don’t. Some bureaucrats own it and tell you what you can do.”

Which is all to say, Bartlett doesn’t want the government to have more authority—with one notable exception.

During the four hours he spends showing me around, Bartlett continually stresses his reliance on only very basic technology to make his little corner of West Virginia livable—the solar panels and the batteries they charge, the power inverters, the water pipes and the wood stoves.
 
Bartlett tells me that the farm’s simplicity is a challenge, but it’s also an insurance policy. If he were to die, he says, his wife might not be able to repair more complicated technology. And besides, he tells me, if he used higher-tech power inverters “loaded with computers and chips and stuff,” they might fail, and then they’d be in trouble. I ask why that would be an issue—couldn’t they just drive to the nearest town to pick one up or order a new one off the Internet? “I have no idea,” he answers. “A giant solar storm? EMPs?”

EMP is shorthand for electromagnetic pulse, an electronic disturbance that can be delivered by a warhead—nuclear or otherwise—and that can instantly short out electrical equipment for as long as months at a time. For survivalists of Bartlett’s bent, it is one of the terrifying threats against which all this living off the land is designed to protect. As Bartlett points out to me, every single one of America’s 17 critical infrastructure systems—food and agriculture, water and sewer, transportation, emergency services and so on—are useless without electricity. Here in West Virginia, running a power system completely independent of the municipality, he’s safe in the event of a massive outage. (His wife also notes helpfully that at 4,000 feet, “an awful lot of the country could get flooded before it gets here.”)
 
And EMPs aren’t the only source of Bartlett’s concern. In 1859, the sun unleashed a flare—a powerful storm of energy—in the direction of the Earth. The charged particles from the storm lit telegraph wires on fire and put others out of commission for months. That storm is now known as the “Carrington Event,” after Dr. Joseph Carrington, the man who studied it. Such storms are estimated to occur once every 150 years—which means we’re overdue for another one. In the 1850s, we didn’t yet rely totally on electricity and technology, so the effects were minimal. A similar event today would cost between $600 billion and $2.6 trillion and could knock out the power grid between Washington and New York for up to two years, according to a June report by Lloyd’s, a British group that assesses risk for insurance companies.

In the last 36 months, there have been solar storms strong enough to disrupt GPS satellites, threaten the International Space Station and knock crucial military satellites offline for a few minutes. Stronger storms would damage or destroy electronics on Earth for an unknown period of time, and an EMP would have a similar effect. According to Bartlett, a terrorist with a “$100,000 Scud launcher and any crude nuclear weapon” could detonate a bomb above the atmosphere and knock out power for more than a year.

There are ways to “harden,” or protect, electrical transformers and other infrastructure, but doing so is costly. After a solar storm knocked out power in Quebec for 12 hours in 1989, the Canadian government invested $1.2 billion in hardening its grid, but no similar actions have been taken in the United States. The closest Congress has come was the GRID Act, a 2010 bill championed by Bartlett that would have ordered the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to explore ways to protect the electrical grid from cybersecurity and solar threats. The bill passed the House, but it was never taken up by the Senate—much to Bartlett’s frustration. “If an event is going to end life as you know it, how can you say it’s too expensive?” he asks. “It is an absolute certainty it’ll happen.”

Bartlett isn’t the only one worried about EMPs: Newt Gingrich campaigned in the 2012 GOP presidential primary on the promise that he would protect the grid against an EMP attack, a possibility that Gingrich insisted would cause “millions [to] die in the first week alone.”

But Bartlett and Gingrich had few other allies in the government. Despite their pushing and prodding (Bartlett notes for me that a scientific commission he helped set up in 2004 concluded that “a determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication”), the alarm bells never really sounded in Washington. A common assessment, as Yousaf Butt, of the Federation of American Scientists, has put it, is that “if terrorists want to do something serious, they’ll use a weapon of mass destruction—not mass disruption.”

That’s why Bartlett stood essentially alone in pushing Congress to spend billions of dollars—even when he advocated budget cuts essentially everywhere else—to toughen up America’s power grid.

Bartlett calls it “the tyranny of the urgent.”

“We’ve got to do something about it in Congress, but the urgent always takes priority over the important,” he tells me as we near the end of my tour. I’ve long since forgotten Bartlett’s age and am just trying to keep up, having spent most of the day walking through dense forest, climbing ladders into crawlspaces and descending through trap doors into root cellars. Before I leave, he asks me a question.

“You drove a long way to get here. How many houses did you see that were on fire?” he asks.

“None,” I say.

“Exactly, but I’ll bet you every one of them has fire insurance. And not one of them has insurance against something like this,” he says. “That’s all I’m asking for. A little common sense. This will happen, and we’re not ready for it.”

Well, maybe the rest of us aren’t. Roscoe Bartlett sure seems to be.

It appears to me from reading the article, the guy Bartlet, is playing both sides of the fence, just like politicians do. Serve your time in Washington, build some contacts, and next thing you know, it's off to the "private sector" as some "consultant", which is Washington-speak for lobbyist. His background is politics, a career politician, not technical, so we know he's not working for the company as some technical expert, so why is he there? What does he bring to the table for the company? Washington connections, which he admits himself that he is still using by putting on a suit and heading to Washington.

If he is so serious about avoiding the grid, why does he even care what he looks like in Washington, or why even bother to assist in the protection of the very system he claims to want to avoid because he claims its collapsing!? Cybersecurity group"? Really? After 20 years in Washington, he knows the deal. Like I said, hypocrite.

After the EMP comes Nuclear Meltdown

An EMP (electro magnetic pulse), if strong enough (and regardless of the source – weaponized or solar), will potentially fry electronics and electronic systems within its invisible sphere of destruction. Many expert opinions and reports suggest that our electrical power grid could go down.

A large weaponized nuclear EMP detonation (or group thereof) high in the atmosphere will cause a wide ranging debilitating EMP.

A solar super flare (X-50+) and accompanying CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) will zap the surface of the earth with an even longer lasting EMP as it did during 1859 (the Carrington event).

The question is, What will happen to our nuclear reactors following an EMP event? Will we all be facing extermination from hundreds of simultaneous meltdowns?


 
The scenario:

An X-60 solar super-flare leaps off the sun with its coronal mass ejection (CME) heading straight towards earth. The CME (a slower moving cloud of charged particles than the X-ray burst), reaches the earth – and the solar particles interact with earth’s magnetic field to produce powerful electromagnetic fluctuations. It is these fluctuations that produce electrical currents in electrically ‘conductive’ things here on Earth, such as our criss-crossing power lines suspended above our streets. Electrical currents build up during the lasting event, and while some grid circuit breakers trip in an effort to save itself, many transformers and their high number of internal windings of copper wire continue to heat up and overload until they burn up as they exceed their design capacity.

 
The result:

Electricity across the land will be gone. Lights out. Communications and cell phones – down. Gas station pumps – down. Banking and commerce – down. Food distribution networks – down. Transportation grinds to a halt.

Much of the electricity may not be restored for months or even years due to the unimaginable requirements of transformer and electronic infrastructure re-manufacture and replacement.

As if that isn’t bad enough, what happens to our nuclear reactors?

 
Nuclear Meltdown?

While modern civilization will rapidly deteriorate into chaos, the worst of it may be just beginning. What happens to the world’s 440 nuclear power plants (about 700 if you count all research reactors)?

Nuclear reactors while running normally, are essentially in a state of controlled meltdown as they heat water into steam which turns the turbines that produce electricity. Could it be that the only thing saving us from disaster is the constant supply of fresh cool water that keep the nuclear rods from melting down?

The thing is, the flow of water requires electricity, working pumps, and working electronic systems to control them. If these electronic systems are damaged, or the electricity is OFF, well, remember Fukushima??

The nuclear plant operators will be trying to safely shut down the reactors with whatever backup power they have available to them (a SCRAM). Following that, they will need to keep the nuclear rods cool – even when they are not ‘running’ in the reactor process. The problem though with this process is you can’t shut down all radioactivity with the flip of a switch.

For a reactor that is SCRAMed after holding a constant power level for an extended period, about 7% of the steady-state power will remain after initial shutdown due to fission product decay. A long cool down period will be necessary afterwards. The cool down from the residual heat (of the radioactive decay) requires circulating water and operating pumps. Without cooling, the fuel rods will heat up to the point where they can melt.

How long do the rods need to cool after a SCRAM?

To give you an idea, one bit of research revealed that even a week after being shut down, the heat from a reactor core boils water at a rate of nearly 60 gallons per minute; and after a month it’s still boils off 40 gallons a minute (source).

We’re talking months – years.

Separate from the scrammed rods of the reactors, there is the issue of the spent fuel rod Storage pools of the containment facility. They too need a constant supply of water.

Backup batteries will keep pumps running for a day or so.

Diesel generators (assuming they or their electronics are hardened and not damaged from the effects of the EMP) will keep pumps running as long as there is diesel fuel on hand. A question is, do the nuclear plants have enough stored diesel fuel to keep the cooling pumps operating for months and months afterwards?

The fuel (gasoline-diesel) distribution systems will be down (or mostly), so where will the fuel come from? This will obviously be a high priority for plant managers, but will they all be able to scrounge up what they need?

 
In conclusion:

It is a foregone conclusion that a Carrington event will happen again. When it does, will we be ready? Will the world’s arsenal of nuclear weapons (and EMP weapons) always remain silent and unused? Will the world’s ‘leaders’ always be sane? There are risks, and this article simply exposes one or two – and presents questions for you to ponder.

I've been seeing more and more commercials, movies, etc telegraphing their punches over this. For example, a recent DirectTV ad had the grid going down b/c of an unhappy cable subscriber of another decided to go hang-gliding into the grid.

Newt Gingrich's Plan to Stave Off the Apocalypse
Whether it’s from solar explosions or North Korean nukes, Newt has a plan to save the world.




Within a year, nine out of 10 Americans could be dead. And whatever causes the national apocalypse—be it North Korean malice or the whims of the sun—the downfall will ultimately be our own fault.

That's the fear of Newt Gingrich and other members of a high-profile coalition who are convinced that our fragile electrical grid could be wiped out at any moment.

Their concern? Electromagnetic pulses, the short bursts of energy—caused by anything from a nuclear blast to a solar flare—that can wreak havoc on electrical systems on a massive scale. And the coalition believes it's coming soon.
 

"I think we're running out of time," said Peter Pry, a former CIA officer and head of a congressional advisory board on national security. And if the worst happens? "This gets translated into mass fatalities, because our modern civilization can't feed, transport, or provide law and order without electricity," he said.

While some see the coalition as alarmist—and others dismiss them as out-and-out quacks—the coalition boasts some prominent and influential names. Pry and Gingrich are joined by former CIA Director James Woolsey.

"It wasn't difficult persuading them" to join the coalition, Pry said. Gingrich "has known about EMP and cared about it for many years."

Last year, Gingrich told members of Congress that an EMP attack "could be the kind of catastrophe that ends civilization—and that's not an exaggeration."

The coalition's members insist the scenario is a real threat, and not the plot of a Michael Bay movie or a Cormac McCarthy novel. They believe a single nuclear blast at 300-400 kilometers in altitude—about the height of the International Space Station—could take down all power in the U.S. Even an explosion just 30 kilometers up would take out the Eastern grid, which supplies three-quarters of the country's power.

What happens post-detonation is not a pretty picture, Pry says: "You'd have massive industrial accidents. One hundred four nuclear reactors going Fukushima, spreading toxic clouds everywhere. Oil refineries burning down, oil pipelines exploding.… Airliners crashing down."

That's just day one. With no power, the country would lose transportation, our food would go bad and we'd lose the communication tools we've come to rely on. To envision what that would look like, just picture New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Pry says.

The coalition estimates that we'd lose up to 90 percent of our population within a year.

But it wouldn't necessarily take a hostile foreign power's nuclear trickery to spark the downfall: The coalition claims American demise could come from the flares of a fickle sun.

A giant solar flare that triggers a geomagnetic storm could inflict the same damage as a high-altitude nuclear blast—but do it on a global scale.

The last such flare—known as the Carrington Event—happened in 1859, frying telegraph lines around the planet. According to Pry, such events happen about every 150 years, so we're already overdue for another.

By comparison, a Lloyd's of London study used a wider range of 100-250 years. The study also said a solar event would only cause extended blackouts for 20-40 million people—not an insignificant number, but nowhere near the globe-encompassing disaster the EMP Coalition predicts.

And Kristof Petrovay, a Hungary-based solar physicist whose work is often cited by NASA, said predicting the interval of such flares is more-or-less a fool's errand. "There's really no way to tell when or how often it will happen again," Petrovay said.

Regardless of when or if another flare hits, there's a wide range of assessments of its potential damage.

Most observers stop short of forecasting the doomsday scenarios laid out by the Pry-Gingrich coalition, but they still see serious problems.

In 2008, the National Academy of Sciences looked at the possibility of a solar flare and its effects. Its findings, while less apocalyptic than the EMP Coalition's warnings, were still dire. A solar storm two-thirds the size of the Carrington Event could still knock out power for 130 million people. The fallout? "[W]ater distribution affected within several hours; perishable foods and medications lost in 12-24 hours; loss of heating/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, fuel re-supply and so on."

If we were hit with another Carrington-sized storm, the report said, it could take months to get parts of the grid back to functional. In the first year alone, it would take an economic toll of $2 trillion, about 20 times the cost of Hurricane Katrina.

According to Petrovay, the worst effects of the flare would be felt in North America, where the highly-connected grid could exacerbate problems and systems running near peak capacity have less room for error. "I have doubts whether [a solar storm] would really take out the whole grid, but probably shutdowns would occur in many places," he said.

So how can the U.S. avoid going dark?

Advocates say the solution is as simple as surge protectors Americans use to protect their personal computers—though on a much larger scale.

The coalition wants such protectors placed across the electrical grid to block harmful currents. In addition, advocates want to protect the extra-high-voltage transformers we depend on with metal, current-absorbing boxes called Faraday cages.

And more replacement parts, especially the giant transformers that can take years to make, need to be at the ready in case we lose critical pieces of the grid. That way, even if an EMP damaged key infrastructure elements, the U.S. would have replacements ready to go.

Without those backups, blackouts could last up to two years, said the Lloyd's report. Pry pegs it somewhere between four and 10 years. "That's optimistic because it assumes people would live that long," he said.

These aren't new solutions. In 2010, the House passed the GRID Act, which would have protected 300 of the country's biggest transformers. The measure died in the Senate later that year.

Last June, Reps. Trent Franks and Yvette Clarke introduced the SHIELD Act, which mandates many of the same safeguards.

When the bill was introduced, Gingrich voiced his support, but the House Energy and Commerce Committee has yet to take it up. For that, Pry blames Chairman Fred Upton, who he says is beholden to electricity utilities that don't want Congress to assert regulatory authority over the power grid.

Upton's staff responded with a statement following a Wednesday grid security briefing. "We have been active in our oversight of the nation's energy grid vulnerabilities and we remain vigilant over all emerging threats to the grid, including cyber and physical attacks, solar storms, and electromagnetic pulses," Upton said.

According to the coalition, protecting the electrical grid would cost only $2 billion, and could be completed in less than five years. Safeguarding all essential infrastructure would come in between $10-20 billion.

Those who are OK with the status quo, Pry says, are "like the zeppelin industry in the 1920s." By his estimate, utilities could fund grid-protecting efforts by tacking on just 20 cents per year to ratepayers' bills.

For now, frustrated with Congress, the EMP Coalition is focusing on state-level efforts—while still pushing for action on the SHIELD Act. Maine's state government recently passed legislation to protect its power supply from EMPs. "We've already made more progress at the state level than in five years of beating our heads against the wall in Washington," Pry said.

It's clear the head-banging has gotten to Pry. At times, the frustration and urgency in his voice is palpable. He brings up North Korean nuclear tests, a sniper attack on San Diego transformers and missiles found last year aboard a North Korean freighter in the Panama Canal. "All of this looks like preparation for a larger, more coordinated attack," he said.

Yeah, they're even telegraphing their punches in tv ads now - for example, they did so in a recent GEICO commercial(where someone got bored with his cable service, so he took up a hand-gliding hobby, which lead him to run into telephone wires which ended up causing the power grid to crash).

Solar Flare Knocks Out Radio Waves

The latest sun storm had far-reaching impact, even on our radio airwaves.  The major solar flare occurred last Saturday, even causing a radio blackout for several minutes on Earth.  NASA captured video of the solar eruption, and its effects were also documented by the Space Weather Prediction Center, which says slower-moving particles from the flare could create a minor geomagnetic storm tonight.

Solar flaresinterfering with radio signals is nothing new, according to Rice University professor Patricia Reiff.  "The x-rays that are emitted from the sun and the particles that are traveling at the speed of light, those hit the ionosphere (in the upper atmosphere) and cause it to shake, and it affects radio transmissions," she tells KTRH.  "A lot of our radio waves we bounce off the ionosphere, and when the ionosphere is very turbulent then it doesn't bounce signals very well."  While radio interference is the most immediate effect of solar flares, there are also delayed reactions.  "The big blast of plasma that comes out (in a solar eruption), that takes one to two days to come to the Earth," says Reiff.  That delayed reaction is the one expected tonight.  Rather than disrupt radio waves, this one is more likely to enhance the northern lights displays, which happen when solar particles come into contact with particles in the Earth's atmosphere.

Solar flares generally don't pose a major threat to humans on the ground, because the Earth's atmosphere absorbs most of their impact.  But powerful flares can threaten astronauts, satellites, or other objects in orbit.  Right now, the sun is in an active phase of its 11-year cycle.  Professor Reiff says it has already passed the peak of this cycle, but that doesn't mean the solar storms are over.  "I would definitely keep your eyes open for the next few years, there could be some really good ones."

Security holes in power grid have federal officials scrambling

In Congress, the vulnerability of the power grid has emerged as among the most pressing domestic security concerns.

Adam Crain assumed that tapping into the computer networks used by power companies to keep electricity zipping through transmission lines would be nearly impossible in these days of heightened vigilance over cybersecurity.
 
When he discovered how wrong he was, his work sent Homeland Security Department officials into a scramble.
 
Crain, the owner of a small tech firm in Raleigh, N.C., along with a research partner, found penetrating transmission systems used by dozens of utilities to be startlingly easy. After they shared their discovery with beleaguered utility security officials, the Homeland Security Department began sending alerts to power grid operators, advising them to upgrade their software.
 
The alerts haven't stopped because Crain keeps finding new security holes he can exploit.
 
"There are a lot of people going through various stages of denial" about how easily terrorists could disrupt the power grid, he said. "If I could write a tool that does this, you can be sure a nation state or someone with more resources could."
 
Those sorts of warnings, along with vivid demonstrations of the grid's vulnerability, such as an incident a year ago in which unknown assailants fired on a power station near San Jose, nearly knocking out electricity to Silicon Valley, have grabbed official attention. In Congress, the vulnerability of the power grid has emerged as among the most pressing domestic security concerns.
 
It is also among the most vexing.
 
Lawmakers have expended considerable energy on the issue, to limited effect. At times, they appear to be working at cross purposes. Some members of Congress want to empower regulators to force specific security upgrades at utilities. Others are attacking whistle-blowers and the media, demanding an investigation into disclosures of how easily the country's power grid could be shut down.
 
The magnitude of the problem is underscored by concerns raised by insurance giant Lloyds of London, which is known for a willingness to insure pretty much everything.
 
Lloyds' appraisers have been making a lot of visits lately to power companies seeking protection against the risk of cyberattack. Their takeaway: Security at about half the companies they visit is too weak for Lloyds to offer a policy.
 
"When Lloyds won't insure you, you know you've got a problem," said Patrick Miller, founder of the Energy Sector Security Consortium, a Washington-based nonprofit that advocates tougher cybersecurity measures for the electricity industry.
 
The challenges are compounded by lingering tensions between federal law enforcement and the industry. Each accuses the other of being territorial and evasive, neglecting to share confidential incident reports, intelligence analyses and other sensitive data.
 
Power companies, eager to keep regulators at bay, find themselves in a bind. They need to show quickly that they are equipped to protect the grid against outside attacks. They warn the grid is so massive, complicated and fragile that any tinkering needs to remain the responsibility of those who operate it day to day, not well-intentioned but inexperienced federal regulators.
 
"The notion of … a single government agency giving an order to direct changes in the grid is extremely dangerous," said Gerry Cauley, chief executive of the North American Electric Reliability Corp., the quasi-governmental organization through which utilities manage the power grid.
 
Even security experts who criticize Cauley's organization for moving too slowly agree his argument has merit. The problem, said Scott White, a security technology scholar at Drexel University in Philadelphia, is that "you are basically dealing with these monopolies that are determining for themselves which expenditures are a priority. Security has not generally been one."
 
Utilities deny they've ignored the problem, pointing to the billions of dollars they say they've spent to upgrade outdated computer systems and close security holes.
 
They are signing contracts with security firms like Booz Allen Hamilton to investigate such things as to how to keep potentially mischievous devices out of the equipment they buy, often from foreign suppliers. The security firms help clients sift through reams of confidential intelligence provided by federal agencies. They simulate cyberattacks.
 
"It is the equivalent of war gaming, like the military does," said Steve Senterfit, vice president of commercial energy at Booz Allen Hamilton.
 
But critics, including many in Congress, say more needs to be done to shore up a grid increasingly exposed to attacks. They note that so-called smart grid technology, which allows operators to calibrate the flow of energy from an increasingly diverse pool of sources, has opened new security risks.
 
The technology relies on devices in remote locations that constantly send signals to substations to help control when juice needs to be brought on and offline. The smarter the grid becomes, though, the more entry points an attacker can exploit.
 
"The whole idea of a smart grid is to push equipment further and further away from the substations," Crain said. "Some of it is even in people's homes. It's physically impossible to secure it all."
 
The vulnerabilities Crain exposed, for example, had been overlooked because taking advantage of them requires an attacker to have access to closed, local networks. Now, a cyberterrorist with a little knowledge and the right laptop can gain that access and cause chaos in a regional power system merely by linking up with the control panel at a secluded electric vehicle charging station.
 
Other attacks, as the Silicon Valley incident showed, can take shape without computers. Last month, New Jersey's Regional Operations Intelligence Center, a state agency that monitors security threats, published a report revealing constant breaches at power stations. The incidents involved people armed with such mundane equipment as false identification, wire cutters and crowbars.
 
The report, first disclosed in the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative newspaper, declared the power grid "inherently vulnerable" to attack.
 
"Many of the grid's important components sit out in the open," the report said, "often in remote locations, protected by little more than cameras and chain-link fences."

Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, said the technology to avoid disaster from electromagnetic pulses exists, and upgrading the nation’s electrical grid is financially viable.

“The problem is not the technology,” Pry said. “We know how to protect against it. It’s not the money, it doesn’t cost that much. The problem is the politics. It always seems to be the politics that gets in the way.”

He said the more officials plan, the lower the estimated cost gets.

“If you do a smart plan — the Congressional EMP Commission estimated that you could protect the whole country for about $2 billion,” Pry told Watchdog.org. “That’s what we give away in foreign aid to Pakistan every year.”

In the first few minutes of an EMP, nearly half a million people would die. That’s the worst-case scenario that author William R. Forstchen estimated in 2011 would be the result of an EMP on the electric grid — whether by an act of God, or a nuclear missile detonating in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

An electromagnetic pulse is a burst of electromagnetic energy strong enough to disable, and even destroy, nearby electronic devices.

The scenario sounds like something in a Hollywood film, but the U.S. military has been preparing its electronic systems for such an event since the Cold War. The protective measures taken to harden facilities against a nuclear attack also help in some cases to protect against EMPs.

The civilian world is another story.

States have been working to fill in the legislative and regulatory gap left by Congress, as previously reported by Watchdog.org, and private companies have been developing technologies that would protect against EMPs.

In 2011, state utilities commissioners recognized the need to invest in equipment that could help protect the power grid, but experts continue to warn that time to do so is running out.

Much focus during the past several years has been placed on society’s cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Sophisticated computer hackers working in secret, most likely sponsored by nation-states, can steal identities, money and even potentially hijack airplanes.

National Geographic, in the movie American Blackout, explored the catastrophic effects a cyberattack on the grid would have on society.

The movie premiered in October 2013 at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., accompanied by a panel of national security experts from the U.S. intelligence community.

Cyberattacks against the grid are possible. Stuxnet, the computer virus developed by the United States and Israel to sabotage Iran’s nuclear enrichment program, demonstrated that such an attack is not only possible, it can be done.

Computer viruses are software programs designed to attack specific entities. But even computers need electricity, otherwise they are little more than expensive paper weights.

Electricity is the lifeblood of the modern world. Food, transportation, medical facilities and communication systems all need it to function.

An EMP attack from a nuclear missile launched by a country like North Korea, on the other hand, would indiscriminately cripple whole regions.

Unlike nation-states, which can be deterred through diplomacy and force, however, the universe acts of its own accord.

An EMP from a super solar flare would behave similarly to one generated by a nuclear missile that detonated in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Solar flares are explosions on the surface of the Sun; coronal mass ejections (CME), a solar flare’s accompanying EMP, can disturb the space weather around the Earth and affect communications signals traveling through the upper atmosphere.

On multiple occasions during the past 155 years, large enough CME’s have disrupted electrical systems on Earth. One of the largest recorded solar flares happened in 1859. The CME, called the Carrington Event, disrupted telegraph systems in Europe and North America, and lit up the evening sky.

A solar flare in 1989 caused a blackout in Quebec that lasted more than nine hours, and systems as far away as New Jersey were also damaged. In 2013, Space.com ranked the solar storm that caused the blackout as the fourth worst in history.

Space.com ranked a solar storm in December 2006 as the worst, and U.S. government officials reported that the event disrupted satellite communications and GPS signals for about 10 minutes and damaged the satellite that took the picture of the storm.

A joint study published in 2013 by researchers at Lloyd’s of London and Atmospheric and Environmental Research found that a similar event today would cost the world economy $2.3 trillion.

Risk of another Carrington-class solar flare is expected to peak by early 2015. In the summer of 2012, Earth narrowly missed one estimated to have been more powerful than the Carrington Event and 35 times the size of Earth.

Wouldn't surprise me if there's a SMALL space b/w the rapture of the church, and the opening of the 1st seal - hours, days, or even months(I'm guessing just days, at most).
