Public Utility Companies Stockpile Equipment For Possible Apocalyptic Disaster

Some of the U.S.’ largest utility companies are combining forces to cobble together large stockpiles of power transformers and other electrical equipment in the event of a major terrorist attack or apocalyptic scenario.

Utility companies such as American Electric Power Co. and Exelon Corp. are helping fund the creation of a Delaware company called Grid Assurance LLC, which will be used to store massive power transformers and circuit breakers in unidentified places throughout the country.

Congress, for its part, has been tinkering with the idea of creating a strategic transformer reserve to house electrical equipment. Lawmakers introduced a bill in 2015 that would direct the Department of Energy to create a reserve program for excess electrical equipment.

The legislation is still making its way through Congress.

“This much-needed legislation would direct the Department of Energy to produce a plan to create a strategic transformer reserve program, an idea supported by NEMA and its members as a way to bolster the United States’ capacity to respond quickly to the loss of one or multiple large power transformers,” Kevin J. Cosgriff, the president and CEO of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, told reporters in May 2015.

The creation of Grid Assurance is meant to address concerns utility companies and Congress have with attacks on the nation’s electrical grid.

The venture also comes on the heels of a Department of Energy (DOE) report published Thursday showing that the U.S. electrical grid is vulnerable to attacks because of lax security precautions.

The DOE report detailed how the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) “had not always established adequate physical security measures and practices for its critical assets, addressed physical security measures recommended in prior risk assessments, and conducted performance testing to ensure that security measures for physical assets were performing as designed.”

WAPA is responsible for running 17,000 miles of transmission lines providing power to 680 companies all across the Western United States.

Another report from the National Research Council in 2012 shows that electrical transformers could become targets for attacks in the future — though the report did note that progress has been made on security.

“High voltage transformers are of particular concern because they are vulnerable to attack, both from within and from outside the substation where they are located,” the report noted.

A slew of unidentified gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets on 17 transformers near substations located in San Jose, California in a 2013 attack. The transformers were not destroyed, but the attacks did act as a warning signal to utility companies nevertheless.

Did Big Energy Just Save us from a Cyber Attack?

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had some words of caution for her successor in her final days in office: A cyber attack on America’s power grid is coming and it’s not a matter of if, but when. Now, thanks to a new private sector cooperative called Grid Assurance, help is on the way.

This is an existential issue for America and the free world. The congressional Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack says an EMP attack would wipe out about 90% of the U.S. population within two years of such an event as a result of disease, food scarcity and the complete breakdown of society. The Department of Energy echoes this sentiment, noting the dependence of navigation, telecoms, the Internet and our financial, health care and emergency response systems on the power grid. Lloyds of London says costs of a grid geomagnetic disturbance event could top $2 trillion.

Our power grid is vulnerable to attack. Utilities reported 300 attacks on the grid resulting in power disruptions between 2011 and 2014. Some of these are wake-up calls. Last December, a coordinated act of cyber terrorism or warfare (victims don’t distinguish) cut power to more than 100 Ukrainian cities and towns. The attack carried Moscow’s fingerprints, using “BlackEnergy 3”— a malware program of suspected Russian origin.

I’ve written before that our power grid’s vulnerability is shocking, and cyber terrorists know this, too. In 2013, gunmen wreaked havoc in an attack on a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. substation in San Jose, Calif., in the heart of Silicon Valley. They broke into an underground vault, cut fiber optic cables and shot up equipment for 20 minutes with AK-47s, wrecking 17 of 23 transformers and nearly causing a major blackout.

Jon Wellinghoff, head of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) when the incident occurred, told The Wall Street Journal that the attack may have been a trial run for a future effort to bring down large swathes of the electrical grid.

Our Achilles’ Heel

At the heart of the U.S. power grid, and its Achilles’ heel, are large power transformers (LPTs) at high-voltage substations. These machines are behemoths. They weigh up to 400 tons, cost up to $7.5 million each, and orders for the machines — mostly made overseas — take up to two years to fill. FERC says sabotaging nine critical substations (like the one attacked in San Jose) could cause nationwide blackouts for 18 months or more. Our survival depends on the grid’s resiliency and how it recovers from attack.

So, what are we doing about resiliency? Plenty.

Enter Grid Assurance, a cooperative subscription service which secured FERC regulatory approval in March that will provide emergency equipment supply services for utilities and transmission owners in the US and Canada. The initiative was launched by American Electric Power, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Duke Energy, Edison International, Eversource Energy, Exelon, Great Plains Energy, and Southern Company.

FERC gave final regulatory approval to Grid Assurance in late March and, as a result, the bad guys’ job is a lot harder. Grid Assurance will have critical spare parts for utilities or transmission facilities that need help in a hurry. It will keep grid transmission equipment in secure warehouses and will provide delivery support. The service is a win-win, pooling assets and accessing economies of scale, which should lower costs to ratepayers.

Not that we’ve been asleep at the switch before, but Grid Assurance will be like the Special Forces of grid resiliency. It compliments the Edison Institute’s Spare Transformer Equipment Program (STEP) that is limited to certain transformers only. Grid Assurance storehouses will keep a supply of other vital equipment too such as circuit breakers, phase angle regulators and control modules.

Also, Grid Assurance is more agile than STEP, which is triggered only by a federal emergency following a terrorist attack. Subscribers can call on Grid Assurance for any emergency, including cyber attacks, electromagnetic pulses, catastrophic events, solar storms, earthquakes and severe weather.

Kudos to FERC

Grid Assurance also dovetails with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) requirement for securing facilities that “if rendered inoperable or damaged could result in widespread instability, uncontrolled separation, or cascading within [the grid].” Grid Assurance also meets NERC standards that transmission owners perform risk and threat assessments and develop and implement plans to protect identified assets.

My Blank Rome colleague Jennifer Daniels , who advises international firms on data and cyber security, says the collaboration of Grid Assurance will be especially helpful “to address security risks to critical infrastructure, because no one company can go it alone.”

FERC deserves kudos for its approval. FERC affirmed that transmission owners may comply in part with NERC standards by subscribing to Grid Assurance. FERC issued a positive order that says a contract with Grid Assurance would be a “prudent” measure for a public utility, that the associated costs can be subject of “one-off” charges to recover those costs, and that it would waive rules prohibiting public utilities from buying non-power goods or services from a non-public utility at above market price. (Grid Assurance will charge its original cost and there is no “market price” for its services.)

Grid Assurance comes as President Obama has issued an executive order for a new sanctions program to fight malicious cyber attackers. The order authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of State, to sanction “malicious cyber actors” who threaten the United States. Good luck finding them! That’s why when it comes to the power grid resiliency is key, and that’s what Grid Assurance is all about.

Grid Assurance will begin marketing itself soon with subscribers signing up and the service being built out over the coming 18 months. The new service is great news for all Americans, and it should help Janet Napolitano sleep a little easier at night, too.

EMP alert: 2 N. Korean satellites now orbit over U.S.

North Korea now has two satellites orbiting over the United States capable of performing a surprise electromagnetic pulse attack at an altitude and trajectory that evade U.S. National Missile Defenses, a national security expert warned in an interview with Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

Peter Vincent Pry told G2 Bulletin that the satellites can be commanded either to deorbit and hit a target on the ground or explode at a high altitude to create an EMP effect that would knock out the unprotected U.S. national electrical grid system and all life-sustaining critical infrastructures that depend on it.

“The threat,” Pry said, “continues to race, hare-like, at an alarming rate, compared to the tortoise pace of our preparations.”

The satellites – KMS 3-2 and KMS 4 – are orbiting at an altitude of 300 miles, with trajectories that put them daily over the U.S. KMS 3-2 was launched in December 2012 and KMS 4 was launched Feb. 7.

At such an altitude, an EMP could impact much of the continental United States, according to EMP experts.

Pry is executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards. He also served on the congressionally mandated EMP commission and as an analyst with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Pry said that while the U.S. is aware of the satellites, it is unable to determine their payloads. The federal government hasn’t commented as much on the satellites as it has on North Korea’s ability to launch a missile capable of reaching the U.S.

The development comes at the same time North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered his rocket forces to prepare for a nuclear attack on the U.S. The communist regime has released videos depicting nuclear attacks on Washington and New York City.

North Korea, meanwhile, is preparing for its fourth underground nuclear detonation. Pry said it’s really a hydrogen bomb with a purposefully low yield designed to emit more gamma rays for an EMP effect rather than for physical destruction on the ground.

‘Biggest existential threat’

Pry spoke to G2 Bulletin after his recent testimony to Canada’s Security and Defence Committee on the “biggest existential threat that our civilization faces right now,” an EMP attack.

He said, however, that the fix is relatively simple and inexpensive.

China and Russia, along with North Korea, already possess the ability to launch an EMP attack that could shut down indefinitely such life-sustaining critical infrastructures as communications, transportation, finance, the delivery of water and food, sanitation, medical equipment, emergency services, and oil and natural gas pipelines.

Obama on why the U.S. won't "destroy North Korea"

President Obama is back at the White House after a week in the Middle East and Europe. During his trip, "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose spoke with the president in Germany for a wide-ranging interview. Mr. Obama had just announced 250 additional American troops will go to Syria to help in the fight against ISIS.

Obama: Putin not "entirely persuaded" on idea of European unity
But the president also faces other big challenges in Asia, including North Korea's claims of successful ballistic missile tests and China's military installations on man-made islands in disputed waters of the South China Sea.

"How aggressive do you see the action in the South China Sea? And do you worry that they will cross some line, in which you'll have to respond more aggressively?" Rose asked the president.

"I've been consistent, since I've been president, in believing that a productive, candid relationship between the United States and China is vital, not just to our two countries, but to world peace and security," Mr. Obama said.

It's not a zero-sum game, Mr. Obama added.

"What is true, though, is that they have a tendency to view some of the immediate regional issues or disputes as a zero-sum game," he said. "So with respect to the South China Sea, rather than operate under international norms and rules, their attitude is, 'We're the biggest kids around here. And we're gonna push aside the Philippines or the Vietnamese.' ... But it doesn't mean that we're trying to act against China. We just want them to be partners with us. And where they break out of international rules and norms, we're going to hold them to account."

In regards to North Korea, Mr. Obama described the regime as "a massive challenge."

"Our first priority is to protect the American people and our allies, the Republic of Korea, Japan, that are vulnerable to the provocative actions that North Korea is engaging in," Mr. Obama said.

He said North Korea is "erratic enough" and the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, is "irresponsible enough that we don't want them getting close."

"But it's not something that lends itself to an easy solution," Mr. Obama said. "We could, obviously, destroy North Korea with our arsenals. But aside from the humanitarian costs of that, they are right next door to our vital ally, Republic of Korea."

Mr. Obama explained how the U.S. has been preparing to fend off threats from North Korea.

"One of the things that we have been doing is spending a lot more time positioning our missile defense systems, so that even as we try to resolve the underlying problem of nuclear development inside of North Korea, we're also setting up a shield that can at least block the relatively low-level threats that they're posing right now," Mr. Obama said.

Relevant Background

The “current” thread of this information started with the announcement of the “U.S. Attorney’s Office in Knoxville on Thursday announced an espionage conspiracy indictment against China General Nuclear Power, Chinese nuclear engineer Szuhsiung “Allen” Ho, and Ho’s firm, Energy Technology International. Prosecutors said Ho conspired with the companies to lure nuclear experts in the U.S. into providing information to allow China to develop and produce nuclear material based on American technology and under the radar of the U.S. government.”

I was told by one deep cover source that the release of this indictment, from two weeks ago, is incomplete in the scope of the persecution and that much of legal action related to this case is going to be withheld from the American people and the media. For example, the indictment is not clear as to the gender of the accused.

The indictment and subsequent press release was vague about the case except to say the following:

    “Among the six unidentified American co-conspirators listed in the indictment is a person labeled “U.S. Person 1,” described as the TVA senior manager for the probabilistic risk assessment in the Nuclear Power Group from April 2010 to September 2014. The TVA executive was born in Taiwan and became a naturalized citizen in 1990, according to the indictment. A payment by Ho to the TVA executive was sent to Chattanooga, according to the indictment.

    The TVA executive had the same role with the Florida Power & Light company before joining TVA and met Ho through the Chinese American Nuclear Technology Association in the early 1990s, according to the indictment. The executive’s gender is not specified.

    The indictment alleges Ho “entered into contracts with” the TVA executive and “other U.S.-based experts to provide assistance to” the Chinese-owned nuclear power company — one of the three largest in China — related to the “development and production of special nuclear material” in the People’s Republic of China.”

The indictment makes it clear that there were multiple facilities involved and the Chinese government is at the heart of what will turn out to be a massive conspiracy. In short, I can confirm every word printed by Steve Quayle in his Q-Alert, listed above.

The genesis of this plot did not begin with what happened in the past two weeks in Tennessee. America’s vulnerability began with good-old fashioned treason and the source of that treason lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In November of 2013, as GRID EX II practiced a “grid down” scenario, I wrote these words:

    “Obama is such a traitor that he previously allowed the Russians and the Chinese, our enemies who have threatened to nuke America, to participate in Grid Ex II. In other words, we gave our enemies the keys to our house and car by showing them how our infrastructure is organized.”

Obama has purposely compromised the national security of the United States by showing the Russians and the Chinese how to take down our grid. I said this in 2013, and I am repeating this today.

My Congressman, Trent Franks, has taken a less confrontational means to say the exact same thing that I was saying nearly three years ago. Franks has been taking on the entire establishment in order to protect our grid which could be done for the cost of one B-1 Bomber (i.e. $2 billion dollars. His claims have fallen on deaf ears. Here is Congressman Franks in his own words.



I have read the Naval War College projections which tell us that within two years of a take down of the grid, 90% of all Americans would be dead. In the video above, Congressman Franks predicts a 60% mortality rate. The fact remains that nobody knows for certain how many of us would perish. However, it is safe to say that most of us would perish.
The Obama-Led Espionage Is Not An Isolated Incident

Since I have been writing on this topic in 2013, I have maintained contact with a source of a key person who works at a nuclear power facility. And what he has been telling me for a few years has been nagging at me. He revealed to me that DHS frequently visited his facility with people of Chinese background. He was concerned because “these Chinese are seeing things that they should not be seeing”. He added that this was a widespread concern among his co-workers at the plant.
Open-Sourced Intelligence

 It is commonly known that 80% of all intelligence information is available in open sources, such as on the Internet. When I receive confidential, deep cover sourced material, I am frequently able to confirm all, or part, of what I am told by confirming through open sources.

Along these lines, in 2013, as I was writing about Grid Ex II, I was provided with the means of how to find open-sourced intelligence related to the power grid by a former congressional staffer.

The information led me to understand how much danger we are in with regard to our power grid vulnerabilities. I have published some, not most, of this material. At the end of the day, I am going to make an informed decision as to whether to release the rest of what I have that is still relevant to this case. Just in case this is read by the “wrong people”, I have already taken the precaution of pre-distributing the material for all of the obvious reasons.
Second Deep-Cover Source

I had another “off-the-record” conversation with a former intelligence source. From this conversation, I have learned that the coming attack is not going to be an EMP, but it will have an EMP type of effect because of the complete nature of the cyber-take down. This is where Steve Quayle’s revelation is so accurate. Steve is 100% accurate, according to my source, that there are powers who could take down the grid today, if they so desired. The grid has already been compromised.

I have to present the next piece of information with a sense of being guarded and somewhat incomplete because to make a full revelation would endanger lives.

The Chinese military is fully planning to take down the grid. I asked this source “What will be the separation time, between the take down of the grid and the Chinese military operations designed to subjugate the American people?” He answered based on his inside information which I cannot disclose, in which he says that the Chinese will wait a year, or so, before launching military operations in the United States while we kill each other off in this grid down scenario.

I was actually told the same thing by another source during my reporting on the Grid EX II event. This kind of information led me to write about the infamous “**** of Nanking” in which, during World War II, Japanese military forces conquered and then brutalized the Chinese people of Nanking. For example, the Chinese people were the victims of two Japanese generals having a beheading contest. Some of the events are so horrible, I chose not print the entire span of the brutality. At the time I wrote the **** of Nanking, I was not at liberty to release what I was told regarding the Chinese future military plans for America at that time. Therefore, I had to issue a warning via an historical message, which I was given permission to do. Today, I am free to tell what I know with certain restrictions:

The brutality of the **** of Nanking will be visited upon the people of the United States. One day, months after the grid down scenario takes place, you will awaken to seeing the Chinese parachuting from the sky and their covert forces, which have been allowed to hide on American soil (e.g. the Port of Long Beach) will be unleashed upon the American people, reminiscent of a Red Dawn style of attack. Interesting, when the remake of the Red Dawn movie was planned, the original producers of the movie were going to have the Chinese invade. The administration stepped in and stopped this part of the plot and the Chinese invaders were replaced by the North Korean invaders, now we know why!

Alarmingly, the resulting EMP field caused street lights to blow out and affected telephone and radio communications in Hawaii, 900 miles away.

Eight years later, however, few of the Commission’s recommendations have been addressed on any meaningful scale in the United States. In March 2016 the United States Government Accountability Office released a report on critical infrastructure protection relating to the threat posed by electromagnetic risks. The paper further supports our findings that, while progress is being made to assess vulnerabilities and improve grid security, the United States is unprepared for the effects of an EMP and more work is necessary to protect the American public.

4-STAR ADMIRAL: IRAN PREPPING EMP ATTACK ON AMERICA, OBAMA AND KERRY ARE HANDING THEM THE WEAPON

The Obama Administration has argued that there is no better alternative to its controversial nuclear agreement with Iran. But rather than cutting off all paths to a nuclear weapon, as the Administration initially promised, the so-called Vienna Agreement only temporarily slows down Iran’s progress toward a nuclear weapons capability and, in fact, protects the regime’s nuclear infrastructure and research and development, potentially allowing Iran to become a more robust threshold nuclear breakout state. A credible alternative to this dangerous deal with Iran is to maintain U.S. and U.N. sanctions (or unilateral U.S. sanctions if necessary), keep the military option on the table, and work with partners in the Middle East to force Tehran to accept much tighter restrictions on its nuclear plans.

A Risky Trade-Off
The Vienna Agreement represents a Faustian bargain in which the Obama Administration agreed to dismantle sanctions and legitimize Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for temporary restrictions on uranium enrichment, greater (but still limited) access for U.N. inspectors and promises to comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)—promises that Tehran has repeatedly broken in the past. If Iran reneges on the agreement, as it could easily do since most of its concessions are quickly reversible, the international sanctions regime will be almost impossible to put back in place.

After 15 years, limitations on Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium are ended, and enrichment activities can be moved outside the Natanz facility and scaled up massively, making it easier and faster to stage a nuclear breakout. If Tehran bides its time it will be in a much better position to make a final sprint to a nuclear arsenal.

Iran’s nuclear expansion will be paid for with the huge financial windfall, estimated at up to $150 billion, which the regime will pocket in sanctions relief when its frozen assets are released, with tens of billions more dollars coming from expanded oil revenues after sanctions are ended. This enormous signing bonus also will be used to strengthen the ayatollahs’ brutal police state, build up its conventional military and ballistic missile forces, and escalate its export of terrorism and subversion.

A Danger to the World
The dangers posed by Iran’s enhanced ability to finance global terrorism will be compounded by the Administration’s last-minute capitulation on the U.N. arms embargo, which will be lifted in five years. This would allow Iran to upgrade its conventional weapons through imports from foreign suppliers and enable it to more easily arm its foreign allies and surrogates.

The reckless nuclear deal with Iran could lead nervous countries in the region to hedge their bets and seek their own nuclear weapons, fueling a cascade of nuclear proliferation that will undermine U.S. security interests in the volatile Middle East. Saudi Arabia has already let it be known that it will demand the same overly generous concessions on uranium enrichment that Iran received, and has begun negotiations to buy French, Russian, and South Korean nuclear reactors. Other Arab states, and Turkey, are likely to tee up their own nuclear programs as a prudent counterweight to offset Iran’s expanding nuclear potential, after some of the restrictions on its uranium-enrichment program automatically sunset.

The bottom line is that the Obama Administration has signed an agreement that will expand Iran’s power and influence, undermine confidence in the U.S. as an ally, strain U.S. relations with its regional friends, weaken long-standing nonproliferation goals on restricting access to sensitive nuclear technologies, and contribute to the evolution of a multipolar nuclear Middle East.

These ripple effects will elevate the immediate threat that Iran poses to Israel and the Arab world (especially in the Gulf), which are united in an unprecedented fashion in their opposition to the deal.

Electromagnetic pulses, or EMPs, usually show up in pop culture as a temporary way to disable electronics. In Ocean’s Eleven, one knocks out a casino’s power supplyduring a heist. In the Matrix movies, an EMP is a CGI energy blast that Morpheus uses to stop the Sentinels from attacking Zion.

In real life, however, EMPs are a potential threat to national security.

First imagined as a troubling after effect in the wake a nuclear attack, EMPs have recently reemerged as non-nuclear e-bombs that silently attack precious electricity. A burst of energy that fries electronic circuits within a blast radius, an EMP could theoretically knock out a power grid if it were large enough. That in turn could send a major city back to the Stone Age, or knock out a strategically significant military installation in an instant.

But is such a large EMP a plausible fear? Peter Pry, director of a bipartisan congressional commission called the EMP Task force, seems to think so. He went on Fox News this week to say that “nine out of ten Americans could die from starvation, disease, and societal collapse, if the blackout lasted a year.” Pry isn’t the only one worried: In a letter to investors last year, billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Singer warned that EMPs are now the “most significant threat” to American security.

EMP scaremongering has been a longtime staple for the tinfoil hat crowd, with popular conspiracy blog ZeroHedge claiming that an electromagnetic pulse attack would be “one of the fastest ways to cripple America and end the dominance of the United States in world affairs.”

But now, the US military is reportedly carting equipment into bunkers to shield it from EMPs. In April, some of the critical communications equipment at North American Aerospace Defense Command was moved into a bunker inside Cheyenne Mountain, a Cold War relic in Colorado that you might remember from the Matthew Broderick movieWar Games.This was after the government had already disclosed a plan about a year ago to build a similar $44 million facility in Alaska for housing interceptor missiles.

So how scared should we be? I wasn’t sure, so I contacted a military analyst at the global intelligence firm Stratfor, the exquisitely named Sim Tack, to find out if we all need to buy EMP-proof iPhone cases, or whether EMPs are something we can put off studying until Skynet comes online.

VICE: First thing’s first: Is an EMP a real weapon?
Sim Tack: It’s not a work of fiction. It’s an actual technology that exists. It’s being played with in some capacity, and will potentially play a much greater role in future warfare. With the increasing importance of electronic circuits on the battlefield… There’s only more and more reason to create weapons that specifically target networking ability and electronics dependence.

Has the US entertained the idea of making EMP weapons?
Yes. That’s definitely something the US has looked into. EMPs were recognized as an effect of using nuclear weapons during test launches in the sixties. As with any type of natural force that is discovered, it became, “Hey, we can actually try and harness this power for military means.”

And have other countries built them?
Different countries have experimented with EMPs. Russia has. There was some stuff in the media recently about North Korea getting some EMP technology from Russia, although that technology is somewhat limited. But the general idea of using EMPs in warfare? That’s not just limited to the US.

Will a real EMP weapon work like the ones in The Matrix?
Well, an EMP overloads whatever weak circuits it can manage to overload, and basically destroys them, requiring that they be replaced by new electronic components to make that system functional again.

Right. And meanwhile in The Matrix it seems like the systems come back after a while.
That could potentially be what happens with hardened systems. Those might have the capacity to absorb an EMP, or work their way through that surge, and be operational again.

The US has not really been focusing the development of its military capability on peer-to-peer conflict per se, so from that point of view, it hasn’t been the main priority. If you look at the conflict in Eastern Ukraine… One of the things that’s been interesting to see there was how the electronic element of warfare has played out.

So to be clear, the Ukraine-Russia conflict doesn’t involve EMPs, but it’s an example of a modern conflict that might have a use for them? How so?
[The Russians] started to jam Ukrainian communications, and tap into [them]. They started to jam the operations of drones that were observing the separatists and the Russians. Then as a countermovement, the Ukrainians have had to look into getting drones that are more hardened against jamming. At the same time they’ve had to try and restructure their communications, and tried to keep their combatants from using cell phones.

So EMPs might come into play when two very developed countries go to war?
Yes, and Eastern Ukraine is just a blip on the radar… Imagine the importance of that kind of time to disrupt the network-centric warfare of your enemy in actual warfare.

Do functioning standalone EMP weapons already exist?
I know that [the US has] built prototypes, and used those devices to test the hardening of other devices, so that they don’t have to set off a nuclear explosion to test circuits against EMPs. Of course, those prototypes and test devices aren’t in a format that you can simply drop over an enemy city tomorrow.

So I shouldn’t be worried about Al Qaeda using one to knock out the power grid? Paul Singer seems to think I should.
It’s not that EMPs are not a threat. It’s just that—although the effect would be massive—currently they’re not really a risk apart from nuclear strikes, so highlighting them as the greatest threat there is might not be entirely realistic.

But I’ve seen videos of people making them at home…
When we’re talking about realistic versus unrealistic threats, currently generating an EMP with a nuclear weapon is the most feasible way to do it. Homebuilt EMP weapons aren’t very feasible. The cost you would put into building such a system versus the benefit that you would actually gain is very, very impaired.

What’s the main challenge stopping small militaries from using them?
Besides the weight, and the cost of whatever you use to generate that kind of electricity—a capacitor, a large amount of batteries, or whatever power generation method—the cost would be so high, but the damage you can do with it would be so limited, that other much cheaper methods might be more efficient when it comes to damaging the area that you’re targeting.

OK, let’s talk about how to defend ourselves from these things. What’s “hardening”?
Hardening is designing electronic circuits to deal with the sudden power surge that comes from an EMP. That in some cases means using thicker, heavier conductors, or creating redundant circuits, or avoiding using sensitive elements within the circuit.

And how would I “harden” my electronics?
Basically, it’s the same as protecting a circuit from power surges, but you’re dealing with the fact that this kind of power surge affects every part of the circuit, rather than entering the circuit at one certain point.

A real ‘Zombie Apocalypse’: How the sun (or terrorists) could cripple America for a decade

We are not ready for either the hand of God or the hand of man when it comes to protecting our sensitive electrical power grid. A bad solar flare or an electro-magnetic pulse attack by America’s enemies would result in the death of most of our citizens within five years.

Powerful solar flares can damage integrated circuits and our electrical transmission systems.  The chance of a devastating event is much higher than most people assume. In fact, NASA estimates a 12 percent chance of a really bad solar flare within the next decade. The scariest part of this scenario is that we already came within a week of this nightmare happening in 2012. A train of “coronal mass ejections” created a stream of high energy particles strong enough to melt our electrical grid. The storm only missed Earth by an astronomical whisker.

As it stand right now, when this eventually happens (and it will) high energy particles will penetrate our “planetary shield”—the magnetosphere—literally melting hundreds of massive transformers. It would take years to manufacture, transport and replace these essential transformers. In the meantime, water treatment pumping stations, as well as every other modern convenience, would cease to function.

If a trip back to 1800’s sounds romantic, think again. Without clean water, millions would die within weeks. Without working transportation or refrigeration our food supply and distribution system would collapse and antibiotics would begin degrading. Those without refrigerated insulin would die first, followed by the deaths of millions more from cholera and dysentery (from drinking unclean water) and from starvation.

Forget the zombie apocalypse. This is a real world disaster. Good neighbors would soon become desperate and social order would break down as parents did anything they had to do to feed their children. Bad people would be free to pillage because experts predict law enforcement would be crippled as any kind of electrical communications would die and officers would rush home to protect their own families.

When we were last hit with a super energetic solar storm in 1859 the “high-tech” infrastructure of the day consisted only of telegraph lines and stations. The lines melted and papers caught on fire on telegrapher’s desks.  But 1859 gravity-fed water systems and local farms meant that life continued without interruption. Our complete dependence on the technology we take for granted means we would not be so lucky today.

Unlike the “Carrington Event” in 1859, we now also face the wrath of man when it comes to damage to the electrical system modern civilization so depends upon.

The effects of an EMP attack on our technology are nearly identical to those caused by a severe coronal mass ejection. An EMP could be triggered by a high altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon over America. From the ground it would likely not be seen, heard or felt but even without blast damage the consequences for our electrical system would be nothing short of devastating.

Our government has recently awoken to the warnings of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA and various other government studies and even a dire assessment by Lloyd’s of London. Recent announcements have been issued that promise our government officials will gather together scientists and agency officials to examine the clear and present danger that could turn America into a third-world nation in a blink of an eye.

This is good news, even if almost criminally late and even though it comes without any appropriations, but citizens should be concerned that being so late, the focus of government will be to save government.

“Continuity of Government” is the term for sheltering favored officials and their families from nuclear attacks in well-fortified and provisioned facilities while citizens are left to wait for coordinated relief. In the case of either an EMP attack or a severe coronal mass ejection, that help could come according to some studies, only after as many as 80-90 percent of us had died.

“Hardening” the grid is possible to protect our systems from a meltdown. This is an infrastructure project that should have started years ago. Pre-placement of emergency food and medicine and distribution plans aimed at average citizens should be developed right now in case hardening comes too late.

Here is national infrastructure spending that should have the support of every citizen and every politician…before it really is too late.

Gigantic 700,000 km long magnetic canyon opens up on the sun

A gigantic magnetic canyon, stretching more than 700,000 km from end to end, has formed on the sun on July 5, 2016.

The coronal hole released a gaseous stream of solar wind that should reach Earth on July 8th or 9th. Next polar geomatic storms ahead?

A canyon-shaped hole has opened up in the sun’s atmosphere, and it is ejecting solar wind into space.

The immense structure, stretches over more than 700,000 km from end to end.

As explained by SpaceWeather.com: “Coronal holes are places in the sun’s atmosphere where magnetic fields peel back and allow hot gas to escape.”

In our case, the gaseous stream of solar wind will reach Earth on July 8th or 9th, possibly sparking polar geomagnetic storms when it arrives.

How America Could Go Dark

Dozens of break-ins examined by The Wall Street Journal show how orders to secure the power grid have still left tens of thousands of utility substations vulnerable to terrorist saboteurs

An early morning passerby phoned in a report of two people with flashlights prowling inside the fence of an electrical substation in Bakersfield, Calif. Utility workers from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. later found cut transformer wires.

The following night, someone slashed wires to alarms and critical equipment at the substation, which serves 16,700 customers. A guard surprised one intruder, who fled. Police never learned the identities or motive of the burglars.

The Bakersfield attacks last year were among dozens of break-ins examined by The Wall Street Journal that show how, despite federal orders to secure the power grid, tens of thousands of substations are still vulnerable to saboteurs.

The U.S. electric system is in danger of widespread blackouts lasting days, weeks or longer through the destruction of sensitive, hard-to-replace equipment. Yet records are so spotty that no government agency can offer an accurate tally of substation attacks, whether for vandalism, theft or more nefarious purposes.

Most substations are unmanned and often protected chiefly by chain-link fences. Many have no electronic security, leaving attacks unnoticed until after the damage is done. Even if there are security cameras, they often prove worthless. In some cases, alarms are simply ignored.

The vulnerability of substations was broadly revealed in a Journal account of a 2013 attack on PG&E’s Metcalf facility near San Jose, Calif. Gunmen knocked out 17 transformers that help power Silicon Valley; a blackout was narrowly averted. The assailants were never caught.

The following year, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which regulates the country’s interstate power system, began requiring that utilities better protect any substation that could disable parts of the U.S. grid if attacked.

FERC’s new rule, however, doesn’t extend to tens of thousands of smaller substations, including Metcalf and the one in Bakersfield. Security experts say a simultaneous attack on several of these substations also could destabilize the grid and cause widespread blackouts.

Gerry Cauley, head of the North American Electric Reliability Corp., —which writes standards for the grid—was asked at a FERC hearing in June on grid security what kept him up at night. He said the prospect of “eight or 10 vans going to different sites and blowing things up.” Recovery from a coordinated attack, he said, could take weeks or months.

The Metcalf substation, while undergoing security upgrades, was hit again in August 2014. Intruders cut through fences and burglarized equipment containers, triggering at least 14 alarms over four hours. Utility employees didn’t call police or alert guards, who were stationed at the site, according to a state inquiry.

Three days after the break-in, Stephanie Douglas, PG&E’s senior director of corporate security, sent a memo to the utility’s president saying security was in a fail mode, and her department lacked clout and resources: She had 26 full-time jobs to protect 900 substations, as well gas pipelines and other utility assets.

Ms. Douglas, no longer with PG&E, declined an interview request. PG&E spokesman Matt Nauman said the utility has responded with a $200-million program that includes better security equipment, more training and hiring.

The sprawling U.S. electric system is regulated by government but mostly owned and operated by utility companies and grid operators that monitor electricity supply and demand every minute, every day. The system is always on—and for years few thought anyone would try to turn it off.

The motive of most substation break-ins appears to be theft. Intruders and, potentially, terrorists also could be trying to hack into control systems through computer equipment in substations—either to cause immediate damage or to gather information for later use.

“A substation is not an obvious target for criminals like a bank,” said  Joseph Weiss, a security consultant to utilities. “Common sense says they want to get into the electric system.”

Complex system

The U.S. power grid is like a giant puzzle that can be configured in different ways to deliver power where and when it is needed.

Major power sources—gas-fired generators and nuclear-power plants, for example—connect to substations that raise voltages to ferry electricity long distance over a network of power lines. At cities and other destinations, substations lower the voltage to safely deliver electricity to homes and businesses. Substation computers help grid operators control those electrical flows.

The grid was cobbled together during the electrification of the U.S. over the past 125 years. It is a fragile, interdependent system generally more vulnerable in summer when it is running closer to its limits. It is also at risk during low-demand periods, when power-plant operators and linemen perform maintenance. Fewer plants and transmission lines operating mean fewer options for delivering electricity during emergencies.

At cities and other destinations, substations lower the voltage to safely deliver electricity to homes and businesses. Substation computers help grid operators to monitor and control those electrical flows.

There is so much variability in the grid that what causes a catastrophe one day might not the next, which makes security issues complex. Small problems can quickly spiral out of control.

On Sept. 8, 2011, equipment problems and human error caused a large transmission line in Arizona to trip out of service. The grid is supposed to withstand the loss of any one line. On this day, electric current shifted to nearby lines and overloaded them; that overtaxed transformers at two small substations, which shut down defensively to prevent equipment damage, and disruptions spread.

San Diego was blacked out 11 minutes later. Traffic snarled. Flights were canceled. Raw sewage flowed into the ocean. Altogether, 2.7 million utility customers lost power in California, Arizona and Mexico.

Federal officials have long known about the vulnerability of electrical substations. A 1990 report from the federal Office of Technology Assessment warned that “virtually any region would suffer major, extended blackouts if more than three key substations were destroyed.”

A 2012 report from the National Research Council of the National Academies of Sciences looked at different parts of the electric system and concluded that substations were “the most vulnerable to terrorist attack.”

“We’ve known we had an issue for a long time and have been very slow to do anything about it,” said M. Granger Morgan, a professor of engineering at Carnegie Mellon University who studied the San Diego blackout.

Security adviser James Holler said his company, Abidance Consulting, inspected nearly 1,000 substations over the past year for utilities in 14 states. “At least half had nothing but a padlock on the gate,” he said. “No cameras. No motion sensors or alarms.”

One utility lost a set of substation keys that were in a truck stolen for a joy ride. After the truck and keys were recovered, Mr. Holler said, the utility didn’t change the substation locks.

Richard Donohoe, director of security for the consulting firm Black & Veatch, said the security departments of utility companies are often so low in the pecking order that “the rest of the organization ignores them half the time.”

After the gunfire attack on the Metcalf substation, FERC required enhanced protection for individual substations “that if rendered inoperable or damaged could result in widespread instability,” or cascading blackouts in any of the three separate sections of the U.S. power grid.

A large security wall now surrounds the Metcalf electric substation near San Jose, Calif., which helps power Silicon Valley. The facility, owned by Pacific Gas & Electric Co., was attacked by gunmen in 2013 and burglarized the following year.

That is a high bar. Utility experts aren’t sure how many substations the new rules cover but estimate it is fewer than 350 out of approximately 55,000. They say more protections are needed at smaller substations that could trigger blackouts if attacked in combination.

The exact combinations depend on energy demand and the direction of electricity flow. In spring, for example, hydroelectric power plants send electricity from the Pacific Northwest to California. In winter, electricity flows in the opposite direction, mostly from gas-fired and nuclear power plants in California and Arizona.

One security-focused nonprofit group called the Foundation for Resilient Societies has called for an analysis of the impact of simultaneous attacks, both physical and cyber.

Thomas Popik, chairman of the group, told FERC in June that existing grid protections were inadequate and his group believed the grid was “a battlefield of the future” that required military-type defenses for key infrastructure.

Michael Bardee, director of the Office of Electric Reliability at FERC, said the agency could do more to study security vulnerabilities at the thousands of substations not covered by the new rule. FERC expects a progress report on the new rule later this year.

“Clearly, there’s some sense that as events go on we may need to re-evaluate the applicability of this standard,” Mr. Bardee said, and possibly expand its reach.

The Vermont Electric Power Co. approved a $12 million program to beef up security at 55 locations after substations were penetrated more than a dozen times by thieves stealing copper during break-ins from 2012 through early 2014.

“We haven’t seen a theft in over a year,” said Kerrick Johnson, a spokesman. The utility installed more secure fencing and better security cameras.

Most utilities are reluctant to spend money on security unless under government orders. They must justify their expenses to regulatory agencies to pass on the costs to ratepayers, said  John Kassakian, an emeritus professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Security upgrades generally include cameras, lights and motion sensors, as well as password-controlled doors and gates that electronically monitor entries and exits. Terror threats, Mr. Kassakian said, probably seem less pressing than spending to comply with federal environmental rules.

Alarms unheeded

Utilities don’t always report attacks despite a legal requirement to notify the Energy Department within six hours of any event that could interrupt electricity or if a break-in targets security systems.

No utility has been fined for failing to comply as far as he knew, said David Ortiz, deputy assistant secretary at the Energy Department: “I don’t have an enforcement team.”

The Journal found nine substation break-ins over the past two years where theft wasn’t the apparent motive. The tally and details of the break-ins were gleaned from interviews and public records requests. The count included attacks affecting the federally owned Liberty substation in Buckeye, Ariz.

The substation, about 35 miles west of Phoenix, is a critical link in the southwest power corridor, delivering electricity to heat homes in northwestern states during winter and cool buildings in the southwest during summer.

On Nov. 5, 2013, someone slashed fiber-optic cables that serve Liberty, as well as the larger Mead substation near Hoover Dam. It took workers about two hours to re-establish proper communications and normal controls.

Liberty is operated by the Western Area Power Administration, which controls 17,000 miles of high-voltage power lines used by utilities serving 40 million people in 15 states. If this system suffered a catastrophic failure, it would take down other utilities with it, experts said.

Alarms signaling trouble at Liberty began ringing at a utility operations center in Phoenix 13 days after the communications outage. Dozens of alarms sounded over two days before an electrician was dispatched.

The electrician expected a false alarm. Instead, he found the perimeter fence sliced open and the steel door to the control building “peeled back like a sardine can,” said Keith Cloud, the utility’s head of security.

The substation’s computer cabinets were pried open. The substation’s security cameras proved useless: eight of 10 were broken or pointed at the sky, Mr. Cloud said. Most had been out of operation for a year or more.

Two months later, on Jan. 30, 2014, Liberty was hit again. Two men with a satchel cut the gate lock and headed to the control building. They left after trying, unsuccessfully, to cut power to a security trailer outfitted with cameras and blinking lights, which were installed after the first break-in.

This time, Mr. Cloud said, utility officials found 16 of 18 security cameras had failed. Most were installed after the first break-in and hadn’t been properly programmed. Investigators retrieved a single fuzzy video from a thermal-imaging camera.

Mark Gabriel, WAPA’s administrator, said the utility has “taken steps to improve our physical security program and processes,” including creating the security department in 2013 that Mr. Cloud now heads.

A federal audit faulted WAPA in April for violations of security regulations, including broken or obsolete equipment, lax control over keys to critical substations and failure to install intrusion-detection systems.

Mr. Gabriel said WAPA spends a couple of hundred million dollars on capital improvements annually, which includes money for security improvements. “The bigger story is how that break-in and others in the industry changed the thinking,” he said.

Mr. Cloud said he has received about $300,000 for security upgrades at a handful of WAPA’s 328 substations, including Liberty. To protect the system’s 40 most important substations and control centers, he said, he needs $90 million: “I don’t have the authority or budget to protect my substations.”

The Very Real Threat Of An EMP Attack

Since the official end of the Cold War, the United States has been the world's sole superpower, leading the world in wealth creation, technology and military might that, at times, seems unassailable.

The technological advantage the United States possesses is felt by its enemies on the battlefield and it is the connected nature of modern life through digitally controlled electrical grids and Internet-based communications networks that allows such incredible progress.

But few realize how vulnerable the country truly is to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that could bring all of this crashing down.

While frightening, it is truly hard to imagine that a simple EM pulse, even one that kills no one in the initial blast, could be far more deadly than a conventional nuclear strike.

Rapid economic collapse, failed transportation systems, mass starvation and the failure of every electronic device within a thousand-mile radius would signal the end of the American era.

Unfortunately, Iran, Russia, China and North Korea are well aware of the destruction an EMP weapon would cause and there is now evidence that each has either an EMP weapon or has drawn up strategic plans to use such a weapon.

The death toll from a major EMP attack over the United States has been estimated as low as 50% and as high as 90% of the population, according to the Washington-based think tank, The Center for Security Policy.

Arizona Representative Trent Franks recently released to the public information on Iranian war doctrine which contains an operation called "Passive Defense" which is anything but passive.

Iranian military planners propose to counter the military might of the US using nuclear EMP weapons, conventional sabotage and cyber-warfare to attack vulnerable electrical infrastructure.

Representative Franks has introduced a bill that would harden the electrical grid to protect the US against what he calls "the most dangerous short-term national security threat we face." Officially, Iranian religious clerics have declared that the use of nuclear weapons against civilian populations is forbidden according to Islam.

Whether anyone believes such self-serving statements, it is interesting to note that these same religious leaders have made a special exception to their fatwa that allows the use of nuclear EMP weapons, since death would come due to starvation rather than directly from the nuclear blast itself.

According to the Washington Times, Iran has already practiced launching EMP capable missiles off freighters and hitting altitudes ideal for maximum EMP effect.

Whereas Iran may not have the EMP capable warheads they need yet, they are far from the only rogue nation developing EMP weapons to counter the United States.

Russia and China both possess nuclear arsenals easily capable of setting the United States back into the dark ages, but so far the threat of retaliation has kept each in check.

A resurgent Russia that continues to encroach on Europe after its invasions of Georgia and Ukraine would stand to gain from such a strike if it could avoid the massive US counter-punch.

South Korea's intelligence agency claims that Kim Jong-Un's brutal regime has recently purchased EMP weapons from Russia and is now in the process of adapting these for use against South Korea and the US.

With a country already on the brink of collapse, how long will it be until Kim decides he has nothing more to lose?

Electromagnetic pulses are categorized as E1, E2 and E3. Solar flares, for which the Earth is overdue, cause E3 pulses which can cripple unshielded electrical grids for years.

The E1 pulse from a nuclear detonation (NEMP) at an altitude of 200 miles and with an effective radius of around 1,000 miles results from gamma rays ionizing the mid-stratosphere.

This causes a cascading resonance with the Earth's own magnetic field that induces a massive voltage surge in electrical circuits on the surface.

Generally, the longer the circuit, the more powerful the voltage, though there is no minimum safe circuit length. Some cars, most computers and anything connected to the grid would be destroyed as well as the transformers in the grid themselves.

Far worse than simply living in the 1800s, modern cities are fed by long supply chains and mechanized agriculture that would collapse.

Electronic banking and payment would cease and millions would revert back to a barter and trade economy as forms of payment.

So what can be done? The Edison Electrical Group  cost estimates range from as little as two hundred million to as much as twenty billion dollars to harden the US electrical grid from attack through installation of specialized transformers.

So far, the Obama Administration hasn't seen fit to protect the nation against such threats and, in response to a few lawmakers, such as Representative Franks, some states have begun to explore the possibility of taking steps of their own.

After trillions in deficit spending and $800 million in stimulus spending in the last decade, the cost of preparation doesn't seem high considering the consequences.

The Day The Lights Go Out And The Trucks Stop Running

What would happen if some sort of major national emergency caused a massive transportation disruption that stopped trucks from running?  The next time you talk to a trucker, please thank them for their service, because without their hard work none of our lives would be possible.  In America today, very few of us live a truly independent lifestyle, and that means that we rely on the system to provide what we need.  Most of us take for granted that there will always be plenty of goods at Wal-Mart and at the grocery store whenever we need more “stuff”, and most of us never give a second thought to how all of that “stuff” gets there.  Well, the truth is that most of it is brought in by trucks, and if the trucks stopped running for some reason the entire country would devolve into chaos very rapidly.

Earlier today, I came across a quote from Alice Friedemann that detailed what we would be facing during a major national transportation disruption very nicely…

    Within a week, in roughly this order, grocery stores would be out of dairy and other items that are delivered many times a day. And by the week, the shelves would be empty.

    Hospitals, pharmacies, factories, and many other businesses also get several deliveries a day, and they’d be running out of stuff the first day.

    And the second day, there’s be panic and hoarding. And restaurants, pharmacies would close. ATM’s would be out of money. Construction would stop. There’d be increasing layoffs. Increasing enormous amounts of trash not getting picked up, 685,000 tons a day. Service stations would be closed. Very few people would be working. And the livestock would start to be hungry from lack of feed deliveries.

    Then within two weeks, clean water supplies would run out. Within four weeks to eight weeks, there wouldn’t be coal delivered to power plants and electricity would start shutting down. And when that happened, about a quarter of our pipelines use electricity, and so natural gas plants wouldn’t be fed natural gas and they’d start shutting down.

There is so much infrastructure that we take for granted that would suddenly become very vulnerable in this type of scenario.  There are countless numbers of workers out there that never get any glory that do the hard work of maintaining our nuclear power plants, our natural gas pipelines, our electrical grid, etc.  If they suddenly were not able to do their jobs, the consequences would be absolutely catastrophic.  The following comes from Tess Pennington…

    They rarely mention the dozens of nuclear power plants that litter the United States. If no one is there to operate them, how long before they melt down and bury millions of survivors under a radioactive cloud?

    Then there are the 12,000 facilities around the country that store large quantities of toxic or flammable chemicals, and reside close to residential areas. 2,500 of these sites contain chemicals in quantities that, if a catastrophic accident were to occur, could affect 10,000 to 1 million people each. And let’s not forget the 2.5 million miles of oil and gas pipelines that can be found in every state. They suffer hundreds of leaks and ruptures every year, and are much more likely to explode when they aren’t maintained. That detail seems to be conveniently forgotten by post-apocalyptic films.

    And finally, most post-apocalyptic movies will forget to mention what happens when there aren’t any functional fire departments. Aside from the obvious consequences, like whole neighborhoods routinely burning to the ground, who’s going to put out landfill fires that are occasionally radioactive?

For most Americans, a major national emergency of this magnitude may seem unimaginable right now.  But the truth is that it isn’t difficult to see how this kind of scenario could happen.  The Yellowstone supervolcano is becoming increasingly active, a single large asteroid could change all of our lives in a single moment, a crippling pandemic could bring normal life in America to a complete standstill, a terror attack involving weapons of mass destruction would spread panic and fear like wildfire, and a historic earthquake along the New Madrid fault, the Cascadia Subduction zone or any of the major faults in California could literally change the geography of our entire continent.

In addition, a massive EMP burst from a nuclear weapon or from the sun could fry our power grid and send us back into the stone age in a single moment.  This is something that I have written about extensively, and those that want to minimize this threat simply don’t know what they are talking about.

And an electromagnetic pulse is not even required to cause very serious problems with our electrical grid.  For instance, just consider what happened in Ukraine toward the end of last year…

    On December 23rd, 2015, the Prykarpattyaoblenergo power distribution station in Ukraine was hit by a carefully coordinated cyber-attack that was months in the making. The technicians lost control of their cursors as they watched hackers open breakers and take circuit after circuit offline, plunging 230,000 residents into darkness.

    The hackers took backup power of the stations offline, plunging the electrical workers into darkness too, and worse yet, they even rewrote the low-level firmware that controls the electrical transformers. The attack had come after months of careful infiltration and planning by a dedicated team of elite cyber-warfare specialists and the result was devastating.

    Even months later, technicians struggled to regain full capacity in the electrical grid due to the overwriting of firmware. With Ukrainian moves to nationalize power companies, it is possible that the powerful and Putin-connected Russian oligarchs who own large parts of Ukraine’s infrastructure were sending a message: we can shut down the system anytime we want.

The truth is that we are far more vulnerable than most of us would like to admit.

So what would you do if “normal life” suddenly came to an end and you no longer had access to food, water or power?

How would you and your family respond?

Hopefully you would continue to act in a civilized manner, but history has shown that many people would not.

Desperate people do desperate things, and it would only take a matter of days for some people to become violent…

    Before long, getting mugged or being a victim of some type of crime is as unpredictable and as common as a car accident. You’ll realize everyone in the neighborhood has now beefed up security on their homes. All your family, friends, and coworkers have experienced a mugging, carjacking, or worse.

    You’ll have no choice but to accept this new way of life and count on basic safety measures (a form of passive denial) or further learn to defend yourself and remain in a constant state of alert (a very stressful state over time). It’s difficult emotionally, mentally, and physically to remain on high alert 24/7 for any length of time. Most people will revert to a form of passive denial until the next incident happens to them or a family member.

And even though things may seem relatively stable for the moment, concern about what is coming is one of the factors that has led an increasing number of Americans to arm themselves.  According to a brand new study from the Pew Research Center, 44 percent of all American homes now have a gun.  Just two years ago, a different study found that number was sitting at just 31 percent.

The way that we are living our lives right now will not last indefinitely.

At some point a major national emergency will strike, and when that day arrives we could suddenly be facing major power grid and transportation disruptions.

What Happens During An EMP Attack? Can You Survive?

This morning I published an article which detailed 4 different sources which leads on to conclude that an EMP may be used to derail the election. The previous story can be accessed here.

This articles details the dangers associated with an EMP attack not including nuclear power plant meltdowns.

 Top scientists and knowledgeable politicians (e.g. Congressman Trent Franks) tell us that it would cost the nation alone up to $2 trillion in the first year. It could take four to10 years to recover and would fatally impact 90% of the U.S. population, meaning widespread starvation and death. Yet, experts tell us the cost to harden the electrical grid would be no more than $2 billion, several times less than the cost of a single bail out paid to the bankers. What could possibly explain this inaction on the part of the Obama administration especially after they planned for this event? And why were our enemies, the Communist Chinese given a front row seat when this event was practiced on November 13-14, 2013? Why are we allowing the Chinese Solar Energy Zones to be constructed next to major energy sources such as hydroelectric and nuclear power?  The treasonous implications are so obvious that Ray Charles could see what is coming. When the moment of the EMP attack occur, what will America look like a few seconds later?

Transportation

In one of the most dramatic effects, airplanes would fall from the skies. Untold thousands of people would immediately be plunged to their deaths. And their deaths might be considered merciful compared to the fate that the majority of the rest of us would face over the next two years. Most automobiles will not work unless they have all pre-electrical parts. Even then how long would gasoline be available? Many people on the various subways, would be hopelessly trapped depending on the time that an electromagnetic pulse would be released.

Hospitals

America would see catastrophic conditions immediately take place in our hospitals and convalescent centers. Within a few days, old age homes would lack the resources and services of the staff to help preserve the lives of those who are virtually helpless. Patients on the operating table would stand a good chance of not surviving. Hospital backup generating systems would be rendered unusable. Food and water would become a scarce resource. Many hospital personnel would walk off the job by the beginning of the third day. The only medical personnel that would stay would be those that live too far away from home to walk. People would not be able to get their life-sustaining medications and services, most of which are electrically powered. Our worst fears would be realized.

Schools and Children

One of the most tragic developments arising from an EMP attack with the fate of schoolchildren geographically isolated from their parents who have already commuted to work. Reuniting parents and their children would be next to impossible for the majority of Americans who have a 30 minute commute or more to work (20 miles). In an article published the past year, I identified and detailed the questionnaire which went out to all school personnel which was inventorying staff school individual skill sets such as  law enforcement experience, construction as well electrical and engineering talents. Sounds like a strange set of skills to be surveying at our public schools. What do the originators of this document know that the rest of us should? If you were a teacher, how long would you stay on the job and ignore the welfare of your family? Getting home and reuniting with family will be problematic.

Communications

Your cell phones, your land lines, text, twitter, emails and faxes will not work. Nearly all broadcast stations, especially television stations, would go off the air.  Due to the high level of computerized automation, the equipment in most radio and television studios would be so completely destroyed that most commercial stations would be damaged beyond repair. Radio studios are actually more vulnerable to permanent damage than many portable radio receivers. When America emerges from the event, the NSA police state surveillance grid would be permanently in place for the extreme martial law dictatorship that will follow. According to a statement of Damon Penn, a DHS official, made to a committee of the U.S. House of Representatives on July 8, 2011, a limited number of critical radio stations are being retrofitted with some EMP protection.  However, most of us will be without the benefit of mass communication. Somewhere between 250,000 to 500,000 people will die in the first few minutes. Perhaps as many as 1-2 million would be dead within three days.

Water Borne Diseases

The greatest threat to human survival, in the aftermath of an EMP attack, is the public’s availability to obtain clean drinking water. This access would be greatly imperiled. In 2010, when Haiti was hit by a major earthquake which killed over 200,000 people, the misery did not stop with the survivors. Six weeks following the earthquake, Haiti announced its first cholera outbreak in over a century. The cholera outbreak went on to claim 8000 more lives. The disease thrives in places where there is insufficient water treatment, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene. This is what precisely would happen in most areas following an EMP attack. Keeping drinking water clean and separate from human sewage and other contaminates would prove to be humanity’s biggest challenge. Cholera would also prove to be the biggest threat to long term survival. It is likely that in the 24 months following the event, that most people would succumb to cholera and other water-borne diseases. Cholera is a horrible disease which grants its victims a very painful and agonizing death. In the 20th century, human lifespan in United States increased by 35 years. Thirty of those 35 years was due to improvements in sanitation. Following an EMP attack, effective sanitation would all but disappear.

Access to Water

Human beings require approximately 2 Liters of water per day in order to survive. If we do not get that water, we will die in approximately 5 days. With regard to an EMP attack, our water supplies are especially vulnerable. The power to distribute water is highly concentrated within the United States. Only eight municipalities provide 82% of the drinking water in the United States. There are multiple technologies which are used to pump water from the source to its final destination. Some require no electricity, however, most do. And even if your water system was powered by non-electrical means, how would the personnel and staff, who monitors and maintains your water supply, get to work without proper transportation? In all of Southern California, the water must make its way over mountains. What will happen when all electricity is gone? The resulting casualty rates stemming from civil disorder and death due to lack of water would be unimaginable. In a time of an EMP attack, the availability of water, as well as the safety of water would come into question for the vast majority of Americans. The availability of clean water supplies would be the most critical threat and would claim the most victims. These grim possibilities makes one wonder why T. Boone Pickens is buying up the Ogallala reservoir. What does he know that the rest of us should know?

Food

The food supply would be imperiled as well. What do crops need to grow? With hydroelectric power gone, where would the water come from for many food-growing regions in the country? Our food supplies would dry up and disappear, thus exacerbating the threat. Most people will perish within 30 days of famine, thus, making water shortages the greatest threat to survival. 

How Bad Will It Get?

    Sociologists tell us that there are five levels of societal development.

    1. Nomadic Hunting and Gathering

    2. Horticulture and Pastoral

    3. Agriculture

    4. Industrial

    5. Post-industrial.

Much of America is entering into the Post-Industrial phase. An EMP attack would reduce most Americans to a violent existence in the first stage, Nomadic Hunting and Gathering. Without easy access to water, most would not be able to maintain a Horticulture and Pastoral society for long. And those that did would face dire threats from those seeking resources. This would make the death curve for the elderly and the infirm skyrocket. Child mortality would dramatically rise. A pre-Revolutionary War existence would largely be out of reach because of the lack of obtainable clean water. Water is the organizing foundation for any society. Society, as we know it, would collapse.

I have read the Naval War College projections which tell us that within two years of the event, 90% of all Americans would be dead. In the video below, Congressman Franks predicts a 60% mortality rate. The fact remains that nobody knows for certain how many of us would perish. However, it is safe to say that most of us will die. Both Steve Quayle and Doug Hagmann have been warning about the dangers posed by Chinese troops on our soil. For a mere two billion dollars, the United States has the ability to mitigate most of the damage of an EMP attack. It is the height of treason to not make this national defense priority number one. And then to make matters worse, we give the Chinese the keys to the car when we invite them to participate in a drill which allowed them to see how to take down the grid.

Don’t you just love and admire the patriotism of Senator Harry Reid for promoting and profiting from the Chinese Solar Zones which now provides the Chinese with easy access to our energy suppliers?

Solar storm heading towards Earth threatening to break your Sky TV and mobile phones

A HUGE solar storm is heading towards Earth which could leave us without mobile phones, satellite TV and even electricity.

Modern-day Britain could go into meltdown after scientists forecast the solar storm to hit between now and Friday which could wreak havoc with technology.

Solar storms affect Earth’s technology as radiation is thrown at the planet from the Sun.

While humans are protected from the radiation by the atmosphere, the rays can heat the outer atmosphere, causing it to expand which can affect satellites in orbit. That could lead to a lack of GPS navigation, mobile phone signal and satellite TV such as Sky.

Furthermore, higher currents in the magnetosphere – the Earth’s magnetic field – could lead to a surge of electricity in power lines, which can blow out electrical transformers and power stations leading to a temporary loss of electricity in a region – although this usually only occurs in areas that are in high altitude.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says a coronal hole has opened on the Sun, leading to a stream of solar particles hurtling towards Earth.

According to SpaceWeatherLive: “The magnetic field of a coronal hole is different than the rest of the Sun. Instead of returning to the surface, these magnetic field lines stay open and stretch out into space.”

As a result, Earth is expected to be hit by a swarm of particles in the coming days which, on a better note, could cause the Northern Lights to be visible.

Mauro Messerotti, from the University of Trieste the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) warned that the hole “extends for about 30 per cent of the disk of the sun” and that the structure “may persist for more than a month because these holes sometimes last for more than one full rotation of the sun, which lasts 28 days.”

Coronal holes such as this are more common when the solar minimum is approaching – a period every 11 years when solar activity is at its lowest – with the next one due between 2018 and 2019.

Mr Messerotti explained that in the coronal holes,"the magnetic fields of the sun are projected outside into the interplanetary space and accelerate the flow of particles from our star.”

'CANYON OF FIRE' OPENS, SPITS A CME TOWARD EARTH

Yesterday, Nov. 5th, a filament of magnetism in the sun's northern hemisphere became unstable and erupted. The blast split the sun's atmosphere, hurling a CME into space and creating a "canyon of fire,". Fragments of the exploding filament formed the core of a CME that raced away from the sun faster than a million mph: movie. NOAA analysts have modeled the trajectory of the CME and concluded that it will probably strike Earth's magnetic field on Nov. 8th.

Researchers have warned that there is roughly a 12 per cent chance that a solar storm could smash into Earth by the end of the decade.

A solar storm the size of the Carrington Event would cost an estimated $2trillion (£1.6trillion) to the US economy in the first year it struck, with a 2008 report from the National Research Council stating that it could take up to 10 years to fully recover.

Obama to leave U.S. vulnerable to EMP attack

The Obama administration, on the eve of its transfer of power, is about to impose new standards to protect the nation’s life-sustaining electric grid from solar storms.

However, the new standards by a Democrat-dominated regulatory board, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, will address only solar activities. Pointedly, it will not protect the vulnerable national grid from a man-made, high altitude, nuclear detonation that could create an electromagnetic pulse.

Such an EMP could have a catastrophic impact on the nation’s technology-based, life-sustaining critical infrastructures.

In an email to WND, William R. Graham, who was director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and science adviser to President Ronald Reagan, warned that the FERC has scheduled a ruling on Jan. 19 – the day before Donald Trump is sworn in as the 45th president of the United States – that is supposed to protect the United States from an EMP.

However, the FERC’s planned ruling “is likely to have far-ranging, seriously counterproductive national security implications,” according to Graham, who was chairman of the 2008 congressionally mandated EMP Commission.

The commission examined the impact of an EMP on the nation’s critical infrastructures that depend on the national grid system.

Graham said the FERC’s impending action is inadequate and will have a “significant near-term impact on our national security, especially in view of recent moves by North Korea to establish an EMP-attack capability with (intercontinental ballistic missiles), nuclear missile-carrying submarines and satellites.”

“A Nation Forsaken” warns of the growing threat from an EMP, either from a natural solar event or an attack from America’s enemies. Threatened are not only the nation’s power lines, but its banking, fuel supply and even food distribution systems.

Because of the continued threat of an EMP not only from a natural solar storm but also from a man-made high-altitude nuclear detonation, Congress last year renewed the commission in section 1089 of the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act.

As chairman of the EMP Commission, Graham warned back in 2008 that the United States is especially vulnerable since its critical interdependent infrastructures rely, more than most other nations, on electronic components.

While the electrical grid and electronic components have given the U.S. major economic, industrial and societal advantages, Graham previously has testified to Congress that these critical interdependencies also create potential vulnerabilities and multiple, simultaneous disruptions and failures.

An EMP event, whether natural or man-made, would cause “unprecedented cascading failures of major infrastructures,” Graham said.

The critical, life-sustaining infrastructures that depend on the vulnerable national grid include telecommunications, banking and finance, automated control systems, petroleum and natural gas, transportation, food and water delivery, emergency services and space systems.

Graham pointed out the FERC is dominated by three Obama administration appointees, although the Republican appointee slots remain empty. Despite the Trump administration coming into office in a few days, the FERC won’t realize a majority of Republicans until June 30, 2017, when the term of a Democratic appointee is scheduled to end.

“It may not be an accident that this action is being addressed on the last full day of the Obama administration rather than at a time when the Trump administration can influence the ruling,” Graham told WND.

The FERC is to finalize standards for only solar storms, or the natural-occurring slow EMP called an E3, ignoring the nuclear-weapon-generated EMP, Graham warned.

He said that the E3 component of an EMP from a high-altitude nuclear explosion can have “higher amplitudes than the (geomagnetic disturbance protection) E3, and there is also a substantially higher, intense electromagnetic fast pulse (E1) produced only by high-altitude nuclear weapons.”

“Significantly,” Graham said, “similar commercially available equipment can be used to protect against nuclear EMP and naturally occurring GMD EMP, but comprehensive nuclear EMP protection also requires protection against E1.

“The cost to comprehensively protect the entire U.S. grid from both E1 and nuclear and naturally occurring E3 would be modest if integrated with geomagnetic disturbance protection, and much of that could be recovered by utilities from their ratepayers at a very low per capita cost,” Graham said.

Graham said he has alerted the incoming Trump transition department appointees and transition-team heads to the impending FERC action.

“We expect that several duly filed requests for administrative rehearing are planned to be denied on 19 January,” Graham said. “Once FERC makes its final ruling on the regulatory standard for only GMP EMP protection, it will be both difficult and more expensive to replace with the necessary comprehensive standard that integrates the nuclear EMP protection.”

He said Trump, as president, will have the authority to appoint three new FERC commissioners between January and July 2017, giving the regulatory board a Republican majority by mid-summer.

“A rebalanced FERC could mandate integrated protection against both GMD and nuclear EMP, with substantial cost saving and major infrastructure survivability improvement that would significantly strengthen national security,” Graham said.

Graham said the FERC chairman, Norman Bay, could postpone a final decision on GMD protection to allow the Trump administration to pursue an integrated EMP-GMD protection approach.

Until the Trump administration can participate in the ruling, Graham strongly urged citizens to contact FERC Chairman Bay [telephone: (202) 502-8000], chief of staff Larry Gasteiger and the two other sitting FERC commissioners before their vote on the ruling on Jan. 19 to request that the FERC defer rehearing of “FERC Standard TPL-007-1, per FERC Order 830.”

Will We Find A Permanent, Peaceful Solution To North Korea Before A Single Warhead By North Korean Satellite Takes Down The National Electric Grid?

The mainstream media, and some officials who should know better, continue to allege North Korea does not yet have capability to deliver on its repeated threats to strike the U.S. with nuclear weapons. False reassurance is given to the American people that North Korea has not “demonstrated” that it can miniaturize a nuclear warhead small enough for missile delivery, or build a reentry vehicle for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of penetrating the atmosphere to blast a U.S. city.

Yet any nation that has built nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, as North Korea has done, can easily overcome the relatively much simpler technological challenge of warhead miniaturization and reentry vehicle design.

Indeed, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un has been photographed posing with what appears to be a genuine miniaturized nuclear warhead for ballistic missiles. And North Korea does, in fact, have two classes of ICBMs—the road mobile KN-08 and KN-14—which both appear to be equipped with sophisticated reentry vehicles.

Even if it were true that North Korea does not yet have nuclear missiles, their “Dear Leader” could deliver an atomic bomb hidden on a freighter sailing under a false flag into a U.S. port, or hire their terrorist allies to fly a nuclear 9/11 suicide mission across the unprotected border with Mexico. In this scenario, populous port cities like New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, or big cities nearest the Mexican border, like San Diego, Phoenix, Austin, and Santa Fe, would be most at risk.

A Hiroshima-type A-Bomb having a yield of 10-kilotons detonated in a major city would cause about 200,000 casualties from blast, thermal, and radiation effects. North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon having an estimated yield of 20-30 kilotons. The Defense Department assesses that on January 6, 2016, North Korea may have tested components of an H-Bomb. H-Bombs are much more powerful than A-Bombs and can produce much greater casualties—millions of casualties in a big city like New York.

The notion that North Korea is testing A-Bombs and H-Bomb components, but does not yet have the sophistication to miniaturize warheads and make reentry vehicles for missile delivery is absurd.

Eight years ago, in 2008, the CIA's top East Asia analyst publicly stated North Korea successfully miniaturized nuclear warheads for delivery on its Nodong medium-range missile. The Nodong is able to strike South Korea and Japan or, if launched off a freighter, even the United States.

In 2011, the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Lt. General Ronald Burgess, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that North Korea has weaponized its nuclear devices into warheads for arming ballistic missiles.

On April 7, 2015, at a Pentagon press conference, Admiral William Gortney, then Commander of North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD), responsible for protecting the U.S. from long-range missiles, warned that the intelligence community assesses North Korea's KN-08 mobile ICBM could strike the U.S. with a nuclear warhead.

And on October 7, 2015, Gortney again warned the Atlantic Council: "I agree with the intelligence community that we assess that they [North Koreans] have the ability, they have the weapons, and they have the ability to miniaturize those weapons, and they have the ability to put them on a rocket that can range the [U.S.] homeland."

In February and March of 2015, former senior national security officials of the Reagan and Clinton administrations warned that North Korea should be regarded as capable of delivering by satellite a small nuclear warhead, specially designed to make a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack against the United States. According to the Congressional EMP Commission, a single warhead delivered by North Korean satellite could blackout the national electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures for over a year—killing 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and societal collapse.

Two North Korean satellites, the KMS-3 and KMS-4, presently orbit over the U.S. on trajectories consistent with surprise EMP attack.

Why do the press and public officials ignore or under-report these facts? Perhaps no administration wants to acknowledge that North Korea is an existential threat on their watch.

Whatever the motives for obfuscating the North Korean nuclear threat, the need to protect the American people is immediate and urgent:

The U.S. must be prepared to preempt North Korea by any means necessary—including nuclear weapons.

Launch a crash program to harden against EMP attack the U.S. electric grid to preserve American civilization and hundreds of millions of lives. This could be part of President Trump’s infrastructure modernization project.

Beef up national missile defenses. Revive President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), the unfairly derided “Star Wars.” Space-based missile defenses could still render nuclear missiles obsolete and offer a permanent, peaceful, solution to problems like North Korea.

Is This Stalwart Of Radical Left Wing Bias Setting Up America For An 'EMP Holocaust'? For Misleading The American People, The National Public Radio Deserves To Be Defunded

National Public Radio (NPR) has for years been known for its radical leftwing bias, and uninformed commentaries on foreign and defense policy by kooks from academia. But the NPR propaganda mill recently reached a potentially dangerous new low, misinforming Americans on the threat from North Korea amidst the worsening crisis with that nuclear-armed dictatorship.

On April 26, NPR interviewed Ambassador R. James Woolsey, former Director of Central Intelligence, who correctly warned listeners that the biggest and most immediate threat from North Korea is its capability to perform an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack by satellite, which could plunge the entire U.S. into a protracted blackout. North Korea currently has two satellites orbiting over the U.S. on trajectories consistent with making a surprise EMP attack.

The Congressional EMP Commission, on which Ambassador Woolsey serves as senior adviser, estimates that a nationwide blackout lasting one year could kill up to 90 percent of the American people from starvation and societal collapse.

(ANP: In the only video below, Dr. Pry recently joined John B. Wells on Ark Midnight to discuss the EMP threat to America.)

NPR was not really interested in Woolsey’s warning about the North Korean EMP threat, the interviewer only commenting, "I never heard of that." Instead, NPR was interviewing Woolsey about President Trump’s first 100 days, fishing for some negative comment from the former Trump adviser, which they did not get.

The next day, on April 27, NPR science editor Geoff Brunfield (who, according to his NPR bio, has a Master’s in science writing from Johns Hopkins University) interviewed EMP non-expert Jeffrey Lewis in a segment titled "The North Korean Electromagnetic Pulse Threat, Or Lack Thereof."

Why Brunfield would interview Jeffrey Lewis about EMP, and not the vastly more knowledgeable former Director of Central Intelligence Jim Woolsey, is explicable only as a combination of incompetence and possible NPR bias against the "politically incorrect" EMP threat.

Lewis opened the interview by laughing hysterically for nearly a minute at the warning by former CIA Director Woolsey and the Congressional EMP Commission that a North Korean EMP attack would have catastrophic consequences. According to Lewis, the 1962 Starfish Prime high-altitude nuclear test proves that EMP is relatively harmless because the Hawaiian Islands were not destroyed, merely damaged a little. And Lewis reassured listeners that, contrary to popular belief, cars would be little effected by EMP.

Lewis is apparently unaware that:

Starfish Prime was not an EMP test, but the U.S. accidentally discovered the EMP phenomenon during the test.

The Hawaiian Islands were not destroyed because they were at the outside edge of the EMP field, where effects are weakest, and because they are islands in an ocean, which mitigates EMP effects.

Russian EMP tests conducted in 1961-62 over land in Kazakhstan destroyed electric grids and other critical infrastructure over an area larger than Western Europe.

Modern electronics are over one million times more vulnerable to EMP than the electronics of 1962.

Over 50 years of EMP tests by the Department of Defense, most recently by the EMP Commission, prove that an EMP attack would collapse all life-sustaining critical infrastructures, including automobile transportation.

In 2010, 2011, and 2012, North Korea made a non-nuclear EMP attack on South Korea, using a radiofrequency "cannon" to impose an "electromagnetic blockade" on Seoul by threatening airline traffic, that also caused widespread blackout of radio communications and disruption of automobiles. A nuclear EMP attack would have much higher field strengths causing much greater damage over potentially an entire continent.

Why does Jeffrey Lewis not know these things? Because he is a teacher at the Middlebury Institute of International Relations at Monterey, not a former Director of Central Intelligence and senior advisor to the EMP Commission. Because, aside from a brief stint at the Pentagon as an intern, he has never served in the Defense Department or worked professionally as a military analyst for the U.S. defense or intelligence communities.

Because his degrees are in policy studies and philosophy, not in missile engineering or nuclear weapons design, even though he pontificates in his blog 38 North on these subjects, and now on EMP, as if he is a real expert.

National Public Radio’s reliance on ignorant academic national security non-experts, like Jeffrey Lewis, is symptomatic of a wider problem in the liberal mainstream media.

For example, a prominent national security reporter for The New York Times recently admitted privately, " . . . we’re just echoing the NGO [Non-Government Organization] consensus . . . Given the military’s history of threat inflation, to do otherwise would seem to be journalistically unwise."

The net effect of media reliance on left-wing academics for national security expertise is to seriously underestimate threats from Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

The agenda of the liberal media and left-wing academics appears to be to convince the American people that it is not too late to solve threats from North Korea and others through negotiation and arms control, instead of rebuilding U.S. military and nuclear strength. They want to continue the failed foreign and defense policies of President Obama.

Appeasement is a stupid, self-defeating policy usually ending in war.

National Public Radio, for its latest misleading of the American people toward an EMP holocaust, deserves defunding by Congress.

EXCLUSIVE – Congressional Expert: North Korea Prepping EMP Catastrophe Aimed At U.S. Homefront

TEL AVIV – While the international community and news media focus on North Korean missile tests and the country’s nuclear program, one expert warned on Sunday that North Korea may be secretly assembling the capability to take out significant parts of the U.S. homeland via an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack.
Dr. Peter Vincent Pry is executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and is the chief of staff of the Congressional EMP Commission.

Speaking on this reporter’s talk radio program, Pry pointed to two North Korean satellites that are currently orbiting the U.S. at trajectories he says are optimized for a surprised EMP attack. “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” is broadcast on terrestrial radio on New York’s AM 970 The Answer and NewsTalk 990 AM in Philadelphia and online.

Pry was referring to the KMS 3-2 and KMS-4 earth observation satellites launched by North Korea in April 2012 and February 2016 respectively.

He warned: “They are positioning themselves as sort of a nuclear missile age, cyberage version of the battleship diplomacy in my view. So that they can always have one of them (satellites) very close to being over the United States or over the United States.

“Then if a crisis comes up and if we decide to attack North Korea, Kim Jong Un can threaten our president and say, ‘Well, don’t do that because we are going to burn your whole country down.’ Which is basically what he said. I mean, he has made threats about turning the United States into ashes and he connected the satellite program to this in public statements to deter us from attacking.”

“If you wanted to win a New Korean war,” added Pry, “one of the things you would certainly consider doing is taking out the United States homeland itself.”

Pry surmised the North Koreans may be taking the idea from a Soviet plan during the Cold War to attack the U.S. with an EMP as part of a larger surprise assault aimed at crippling the U.S. military.

“During the Cold War, the Russians had a secret weapon they called a fractional orbital bombardment system,” he explained. “And the idea was to do a surprise EMP attack against the United States by disguising a warhead as a satellite. Because a satellite trajectory is different from an ICBM trajectory that is aiming to go into a city. You know, for accuracy on an ICBM you launch it on a lower energy, 45-degree angle that follows a classic ballistic trajectory. Like a rifle. To land your missile on a city.”

Pry continued of the original Russian plan:

But if you put a satellite in orbit it follows a different trajectory. It doesn’t have accuracy but it puts the satellite up there so that it stays in permanent orbit so it looks different in terms of the trajectory. And guys watching their radar screens tend not to get alarmed when they see a missile being launched on that satellite trajectory. Because they assume it is for peaceful purposes. …

So, the idea was to put a nuclear weapon on a satellite. Launch it on a satellite trajectory toward the south so it is also flying away from the United States. Orbit it over the South Pole and come up on the other side of the earth so that it approaches us from the south.

Because we didn’t during the Cold War and even today we still don’t have ballistic missile early radar warnings looking south. We don’t have any national missile defenses to the south. We are blind and defenseless to the south. We can’t see anything coming from that direction. Then when this gets over the United States you light it off so that it does an EMP attack.

Pry stated that in the Soviet plan, “They were mainly interested in paralyzing our strategic forces, our strategic command and control and communications so that we couldn’t talk to our forces. Maybe take out some of the forces themselves. And that would give them time to then launch their mass attack across the North Pole to blow up our ICBMs. So, kill them once with the EMP. Kill them twice by blasting our bases by using their long-range missiles. That was the Russian plan. But the cutting edge of the plan was this surprise EMP attack.”

North Korea, by contrast, “doesn’t have enough missiles or sophisticated missiles to blow up our missile bases and bomber bases. What they seem to be doing with the satellites is the EMP part of the Soviet plan.”

“I think what they are mainly going for is the unhardened electric grid,” Pry surmised. “Transportation, communications, all of the other civilian critical infrastructure that we depend upon to keep our population alive.”

Pry spotlighted recent North Korean nuclear and missile tests minimized by the news media for reported failures. When viewed through the lens of potential preparations for an EMP attack, Pry warned, the tests were actually successes.

Pry wrote about some of those tests in a Newsmax piece last week:

I am looking at an unclassified U.S. Government chart that shows a 10-kiloton warhead (the power of the Hiroshima A-Bomb) detonated at an altitude of 70 kilometers will generate an EMP field inflicting upset and damage on unprotected electronics. …

On April 30, South Korean officials told The Korea Times and YTN TV that North Korea’s test of a medium-range missile on April 29 was not a failure, as widely reported in the world press, because it was deliberately detonated at 72 kilometers altitude. 72 kilometers is the optimum burst height for a 10-Kt warhead making an EMP attack. …

According to South Korean officials, “It’s believed the explosion was a test to develop a nuclear weapon different from existing ones.” Japan’s Tetsuro Kosaka writes in Nikkei, “Pyongyang could be saying, ‘We could launch an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack if things get really ugly.'”

“The April 29 missile launch looks suspiciously like practice for an EMP attack,” Pry wrote. “The missile was fired on a lofted trajectory, to maximize, not range, but climbing to high-altitude as quickly as possible, where it was successfully fused and detonated — testing everything but an actual nuclear warhead.”

This weekend, an editorial published in the North Korean state-run media agency KNCA threatened the White House would be “reduced to ashes.”

The same news agency warned last week that “any military provocation against the DPRK will precisely mean a total war which will lead to the final doom of the US.” DPRK stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or North Korea.

North Korea Dreams of Turning Out the Lights

Conventional wisdom holds that it will be years before North Korea can credibly threaten the United States with a nuclear attack. Kim Jong Un’s scientists are still testing only low-yield nuclear weapons, the thinking goes, and have yet to place them on ballistic missiles capable of reaching America’s West Coast.

While its technological shortcomings have been well documented, North Korea’s desire to provoke a nuclear conflict with the U.S. should not be minimized or ignored. Pyongyang is surely close to getting it right.

For South Korea the danger is more immediate. According to physicist David Albright, the founder and president of the Institute for Science and International Security, the North Koreans have between 13 and 30 nuclear weapons and can build as many as five more every year. If Mr. Kim were to detonate one of these bombs in the atmosphere 40 miles above Seoul, it could inflict catastrophic damage on South Korea’s electric power grid, leading to a prolonged blackout that could have deadly consequences.

The United States has 28,500 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines in South Korea stationed below the 38th parallel—and more at sea nearby. An electromagnetic pulse attack on South Korea could play havoc with America’s ability to mount an effective response to North Korean aggression. One hopes the troops manning the two already-deployed batteries of the Thaad ballistic-missile defense system are prepared for such a scenario (in a concession to China, the newly elected South Korean government suspended this week the deployment of four additional launchers).

In 2001 Congress established a commission to study the danger of an electromagnetic pulse generated by the detonation of a high-altitude nuclear weapon. It concluded that while there would be no blast effects on the ground, critical electricity-dependent infrastructure could be rendered inoperable. The commission’s chairman, William R. Graham, has noted that several Russian generals told the commissioners in 2004 that the designs for a “super EMP nuclear weapon” had been transferred to North Korea.

Pyongyang, the Russian generals reported, was probably only a few years away from developing super EMP capability. According to Peter Vincent Pry, staff director of the congressional EMP commission, a recent North Korean medium-range missile test that was widely reported to have exploded midflight could in fact have been deliberately detonated at an altitude of 40 miles.

Was it a dry run for an EMP attack? Detonation at that altitude of a nuclear warhead with a yield of 10 to 20 kilotons—similar to those tested by North Korea—would produce major EMP effects and inflict catastrophic damage to unhardened electronics across hundreds of miles of surface territory. It is a myth that large yield nuclear weapons of hundreds of kilotons are required to produce such effects.

Although some analysts have dismissed the possibility of a successful North Korean EMP attack—either on South Korea or the United States—several factors could make it a more appealing first-strike strategy for Kim Jong Un’s nuclear scientists than a direct, missile-delivered nuclear strike. For one thing, accuracy is not a concern; the North Koreans simply need to get near their target to sow chaos. Nor would they need to worry about developing a reliable re-entry vehicle for their ballistic missiles.

Conventional wisdom aside, a North Korean EMP attack on the U.S. may also not be far-fetched. “North Korea could make an EMP attack against the United States by launching a short-range missile off a freighter or submarine or by lofting a warhead to 30 kilometers burst height by balloon,” wrote Mr. Graham earlier this month on the security blog 38 North. “Even a balloon-lofted warhead detonated at 30 kilometers altitude could blackout the Eastern Grid that supports most of the population and generates 75 percent of US electricity. Moreover, an EMP attack could be made by a North Korean satellite.” Two North Korean satellites currently orbit the earth on trajectories that take them over the U.S.

This is not mere theory. In 1962 the United States detonated a 1.4-megaton nuclear warhead over the South Pacific, 900 miles southwest of Hawaii. Designated “Starfish Prime,” the blast destroyed hundreds of street lights in Honolulu, caused electrical surges on airplanes in the area, and damaged at least six satellites. Only Hawaii’s undeveloped electric power-transmission infrastructure prevented a prolonged blackout. It was the era of vacuum-tube electronics. We are living in the digital age.

The U.S. and South Korea should ensure their ballistic-missile defenses are effective and harden their electric power grids against EMP effects as soon as possible. The day of reckoning could come sooner than anyone in either country thinks.

EXCLUSIVE: Author Explains How Electromagnetic Pulse Attack Can Destroy North America

The United States and Canada are apparently doing nothing to prepare for such an attack, argues author Anthony Furey.

This month, Furey released his book Pulse Attack: The Real Story Behind the Secret Weapon That Can Destroy North America on Amazon. The book is the first of its kind to outline the A-Z effects of a potential EMP attack on North America and suggests several simple ways to protect against such a devastating scenario.

Furey is a national columnist for the Toronto Sun and a fellow at True North Initiative, a Canada-based think tank dedicated to advancing sound immigration and security policies.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Furey explained that his motivation for writing Pulse Attack is to generate awareness about this important topic and to help the public understand what this issue is. He said such an attack, used as a piece of warfare, may disable civilization.

“I was inspired to write this book two years ago after I met with former CIA Director Jim Woolsey, who was in Canada, to talk about the Iran deal,” Furey said. “I had maybe just peripherally heard the phrase [EMP] once or twice, seen it on a science fiction show and didn’t think much of it. And then these high-profile national security people are talking about it, and I thought, ‘Wow, why aren’t more people talking about this?'”

“Right now the issue is more urgent than ever with North Korea on the rise and being emboldened,” Furey said. “While North Korea, as you know, doesn’t always succeed to the level they want – some of their tests aren’t overtly successful – they are still making progress.” He added, “Everything they do, even if it’s a failed launch, is them learning more information” about how to carry out an EMP attack.

Furey noted that it would be easier for North Korea to, in some respects, develop an EMP weapon over a nuclear weapon. “An EMP weapon requires a much smaller kiloton yield to get off the ground,” he explained.

While much of the media reported North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests as “failures,” it is possible these tests were actually successes, if testing for something other than explosive ability.

North Korea threatens to wipe out the United States on a regular basis through its state media.

An EMP attack can be caused by the sun, by a nuclear EMP (NEMP), or a non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NNEMP).

An NEMP is an abrupt pulse of electromagnetic radiation that occurs as a result of a nuclear explosion. An NNEMP is virtually the same except it does not include the nuclear component. The currents caused by these charges the atmosphere with electromagnetic waves that travel down onto the earth’s surface at super speeds hitting everything within their line of sight, sending high-voltage energy through the electricity grid and frying them, causing massive disarray.

Furey told Breitbart News that, when these waves hit the earth’s surface, they have the ability to take down our water filtration systems, regional food hubs, communication networks, and the financial industry. “We live in an increasingly fragile civilization where we rely on electricity for absolutely everything,” he said. Such an attack could also destroy our transformers and result in the very way we create electricity to be taken off the grid for up to one year.

When the sun releases what is known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), it has the same effects as an EMP attack would.

In September 1859, a geomagnetic superstorm, known as the Carrington Event, was the first documented solar coronal mass ejection (CME) to hit the earth’s surface. It resulted in severe storms and disruptions in the earth’s atmosphere. The incident became known as the Carrington Event, after an English scientist, Richard C. Carrington, who made the discovery.

Several years later, in 1989, another geomagnetic storm caused by a CME blacked eastern Canada out for hours and inflicted billions of dollars in losses.

Then, in July 2012, one of the strongest solar storms in recorded history, a double CME, narrowly missed Earth. Scientists have suggested that this storm may have been stronger than the Carrington event. According to the National Academy of Sciences, a similar storm taking place today would result in over $2 trillion in damages; that’s 20 times more than damage incurred from Hurricane Katrina.

In one chapter of his book, Pulse Attack, Furey described a 2013 incident that occurred at the Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s Metcalf transmission substation in California. A group of professional gunmen attacked the transformer station successfully shutting down access to the grid for millions of Californians. “They did it with military assault weapons, and they did it successfully,” Furey said. “They disabled all the cameras. It clearly wasn’t just a disgruntled employee. It wasn’t just a bunch of L.A. gang members. And to this day, a lot of national security experts wonder, ‘what was the point of that attack? Why were they going after the electricity grid? Was it a dry run for something greater?'”

Furey pointed out that at the very same time, North Korea had a satellite going over the middle of the United States. And if it were armed with an EMP weapon, it could have been “a perfect confluence of events to take down the grid for all of North America.”

One year after the 2013 Metcalf attack took place, retired federal regulator Jon Wellinghoff said it was “the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred” in the U.S.

“One of the biggest points that I try to drive home in the book is that we know enough about EMP to know that our enemies have it or are working towards it,” Furey told Breitbart News. “We know enough about it and that it can cause catastrophic damage to our way of life in North America. But there are still too many unknowns about what to do about it, how bad it will be, and what it means for us.”

Protecting North American’s electrical grid against the most devastating consequences of an EMP disruption or attack is simple and would require, at its most basic, a minimal amount of resources. “The solutions are actually within reach, and they are easy,” Furey noted. As little as 8 cents per month (less than $1 per year) charged to each residential electricity consumer over the course of five years could be enough to provide the basic national safeguards for our electric grid.

The GRID Act and SHIELD Act have been sitting in both the House and Senate. Unfortunately, powerful special interest groups have lobbied against this funding solution to an entirely non-partisan issue.

“The energy and electricity lobby is incredibly weary of this because it does mean a bit more regulation,” Furey explained. “It does mean that they will be told that they will have to investigate this subject more and insulate the grid from electromagnetic pulse attacks and they simply don’t want the regulation. They don’t want the legislation.” He said, “As an advocate of smaller government values, I can appreciate what they’re getting at there.” But he noted that government still has a small role to play in society and part of that is “making sure people can’t destroy our civilization with one single weapon.”

However, Furey noted that it is possible for states to take the onus of protecting their energy grids upon themselves. “It doesn’t need to happen through federal legislation. It can happen through state legislation in America and provincial legislation here, in Canada.”

Furey ultimately emphasized the importance of informing the public about this very real threat to North America’s national security. “Can you imagine if back during the Cold War the U.S. and allies did absolutely nothing to protect against general nuclear warfare?” he posited. “There would be a massive scandal. There would be a crisis of confidence in how the citizenry views their government. Exactly the same thing is happening right now.”

America has the most expensive, and the most innovative and technology-based infrastructure in the world. However, it's also the most vulnerable, b/c of all of the lack of costs invested in it (ie, see all of the train derails, bridge collapses, etc that have happened in recent years b/c of the lack of costs to maintain them). This is largely b/c of this country's out of control national debt.

When the rapture happens, America will fall immediately.

Central America hit by massive power outages
just saying, same thing if grid goes down

 A huge power outage plunged millions of people across Central America into darkness Saturday, as authorities from Panama to Costa Rica to El Salvador scrambled to restore electrical service.

The blackout affected some five million people in Costa Rica alone, where officials largely had managed to restore service after a nationwide power outage lasting about five hours.

Authorities pinned blame for the power outages on a downed Panamanian transmission line that adversely affected the power supply for much of the region.

Countries in the region, from Guatemala to Panama, are connected by the same power grid, covering an expanse of some 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles).

But that interconnectedness means that the countries of Central America are vulnerable when there are power grid malfunctions in any one.

Chaos reigned in the Costa Rican capital after traffic lights ceased to function, while the main airport in San Jose had to run on backup power until the power system was up and running again.

The blackout was the first experienced in Costa Rica, among the most developed countries in Latin America, since 2001.

Officials said as many as two million people were left in the dark in Panama, with an undetermined number affected in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

Details were not immediately available about how many people were affected by the blackout elsewhere in Central America, or whether they had managed to get their power systems back up and running.

Officials at the Costa Rican Institute for Electricity said power was disrupted throughout the entire country, but was restored in most places by 6:00 pm (0000 GMT).

"ICE is trying to diagnose the problem," Communications Minister Mauricio Herrera, said earlier Saturday referring to the office by its Spanish acronym. He said that workers succeeded in restoring power to some areas of Costa Rica.

ICE said that the origins of the blackout were outside of the country and urged the public to remain indoors while they try to fix the problem.

In Panama, the ETESA government power authority said via Twitter that the nation had experienced just a "partial blackout" and that workers were trying to restore power to the affected areas.

Much of the power was restored about three hours after the blackout started, officials said.

The blackout in Panama occurred about 15 minutes into a major speech delivered by President Juan Carlos Varela to the country's legislature.

Nicaragua for a time had to tap the grid in neighboring Honduras to keep the lights on.
