Yellowstone Has Bulged as Magma Pocket Swells
Some places saw the ground rise by ten inches, experts report.

Yellowstone National Park's supervolcano just took a deep "breath," causing miles of ground to rise dramatically, scientists report.

The simmering volcano has produced major eruptions—each a thousand times more powerful than Mount St. Helens's 1980 eruption—three times in the past 2.1 million years. Yellowstone's caldera, which covers a 25- by 37-mile (40- by 60-kilometer) swath of Wyoming, is an ancient crater formed after the last big blast, some 640,000 years ago.

Since then, about 30 smaller eruptions—including one as recent as 70,000 years ago—have filled the caldera with lava and ash, producing the relatively flat landscape we see today.

But beginning in 2004, scientists saw the ground above the caldera rise upward at rates as high as 2.8 inches (7 centimeters) a year. (Related: "Yellowstone Is Rising on Swollen 'Supervolcano.'")

The rate slowed between 2007 and 2010 to a centimeter a year or less. Still, since the start of the swelling, ground levels over the volcano have been raised by as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) in places.

"It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high," said the University of Utah's Bob Smith, a longtime expert in Yellowstone's volcanism.

Triple swarm of earthquakes shakes Yellowstone

By MIKE KOSHMRL, Jackson Hole News & Guide   Published: Sep 22, 2013 at 8:46 AM PDT  Last Updated: Sep 22, 2013 at 11:11 AM PDT

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Until recently, Bob Smith had never witnessed two simultaneous earthquake swarms in his 53 years of monitoring seismic activity in and around the Yellowstone Caldera.

Now, Smith, a University of Utah geophysics professor, has seen three swarms at once.

"It's very remarkable," Smith said. "How does one swarm relate to another? Can one swarm trigger another and vice versa?"

Because concurrent swarms have never been detected in the past, the answers aren't in yet, Smith said. The geophysicist said he "wouldn't doubt" if at least two of the events were related.

Temblors from the three quake swarms mostly hit in three areas: Lewis Lake, the Lower Geyser Basin and the northwest part of Norris Geyser Basin.

The largest earthquake shook the ground near Old Faithful Geyser on Sept. 15.

The epicenter of the magnitude 3.6 quake, the largest in Yellowstone in about a year, was just 6 miles to the north of Old Faithful.

"Generally speaking it needs to be 3.0 or higher for individuals to feel it," Yellowstone National Park spokesman Al Nash told the Jackson Hole News & Guide. "This one was somewhat stronger than that and it was in an area where a lot of people are."

Yellowstone's recent earthquake swarms started on Sept. 10 and were shaking until about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 16.

"A total of 130 earthquakes of magnitude 0.6 to 3.6 have occurred in these three areas, however, most have occurred in the Lower Geyser Basin," a University of Utah statement said. "Notably much of seismicity in Yellowstone occurs as swarms."

Including smaller events that have not been verified, there were many more quakes, Smith said.

The recent swarms produced roughly four quakes that were large enough to feel.

The first, a magnitude 3.5, struck Sept. 13 about 17 miles northeast of West Yellowstone, Mont. Then, in the early hours Sept. 15, two quakes, a magnitude 3.2 and magnitude 3.4, were detected in quick succession at 5:10 and 5:11 a.m., about 15 miles southeast of West Yellowstone. The magnitude 3.6 that marked the peak of the swarm struck nearby about 4 1/2 hours later.

"They weren't big earthquakes," Smith said, "but they were felt."

About half a dozen earthquakes are felt in Yellowstone in an average year, he said.

"This is pretty unusual, to be honest," Smith said.

None of the recent quakes, Nash said, were strong enough to cause damage or throw off the cycle of the Old Faithful geyser's eruptions.

"We know that a significant enough earthquake in the region has potential to alter geyser activity," the spokesman said. "A strong enough earthquake, like the one that occurred out at Hebgen Lake in 1959, did change the interval of Old Faithful eruptions."

That quake, a 7.3 to 7.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, caused nearly 300 features on the Yellowstone landscape to erupt, 160 of which had no previous record of geysers.

Smith traced the three recent earthquake swarms to the Hebgen Lake quake.

"These are a really related," he said.

"We think that much of the seismicity is still aftershocks from that event in 1959. It can go on for hundreds of years."

Yellowstone Supervolcano Alert: The Most Dangerous Volcano In America Is Roaring To Life

Right now, the ground underneath Yellowstone National Park is rising at a record rate.  In fact, it is rising at the rate of about three inches per year.  The reason why this is such a concern is because underneath the park sits the Yellowstone supervolcano – the largest volcano in North America.  Scientists tell us that it is inevitable that it will erupt again one day, and when it does the devastation will be almost unimaginable.  A full-blown eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano would dump a 10 foot deep layer of volcanic ash up to 1,000 miles away, and it would render much of the United States uninhabitable.  When most Americans think of Yellowstone, they tend to conjure up images of Yogi Bear and “Old Faithful”, but the truth is that sleeping underneath Yellowstone is a volcanic beast that could destroy our nation in a single day and now that beast is starting to wake up.

The Yellowstone supervolcano is so vast that it is hard to put it into words.  According to the Daily Mail, the magma “hotspot” underneath Yellowstone is approximately 300 miles wide…

The Yellowstone Caldera is one of nature’s most awesome creations and sits atop North America’s largest volcanic field.

Its name means ‘cooking pot’ or ‘cauldron’ and it is formed when land collapses following a volcanic explosion.

In Yellowstone, some 400 miles beneath the Earth’s surface is a magma ‘hotspot’ which rises to 30 miles underground before spreading out over an area of 300 miles across.

Atop this, but still beneath the surface, sits the slumbering volcano.

When most Americans think of volcanic eruptions in the United States, they remember the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens back in 1980.  But that eruption would not even be worth comparing to a full-blown eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano.

And now the area around Yellowstone is becoming increasingly seismically active.  In fact, Professor Bob Smith says that he has never seen anything like this in the 53 years that he has been watching Yellowstone…

Until recently, Bob Smith had never witnessed two simultaneous earthquake swarms in his 53 years of monitoring seismic activity in and around the Yellowstone Caldera.

Now, Smith, a University of Utah geophysics professor, has seen three swarms at once.

In September, 130 earthquakes hit Yellowstone over the course of a single week.  This has got many Yellowstone observers extremely concerned…

Yellowstone’s recent earthquake swarms started on Sept. 10 and were shaking until about 11:30 a.m. Sept. 16.

“A total of 130 earthquakes of magnitude 0.6 to 3.6 have occurred in these three areas, however, most have occurred in the Lower Geyser Basin,” a University of Utah statement said. “Notably much of seismicity in Yellowstone occurs as swarms.”

So what is the worst case scenario?

Well, according to the Daily Mail, a full-blown eruption of Yellowstone could leave two-thirds of the United States completely uninhabitable…

It would explode with a force a thousand times more powerful than the Mount St Helens eruption in 1980.

Spewing lava far into the sky, a cloud of plant-killing ash would fan out and dump a layer 10ft deep up to 1,000 miles away.

Two-thirds of the U.S. could become uninhabitable as toxic air sweeps through it, grounding thousands of flights and forcing millions to leave their homes.

Can you think of another potential disaster that could accomplish the same thing?

That is why what is going on at Yellowstone right now is so important, and the American people deserve the truth.  The following are some more facts about Yellowstone that I compiled that I included in a previous article…

#1 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone could be up to 1,000 time more powerful than the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980.

#2 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone would spew volcanic ash 25 miles up into the air.

#3 The next eruption of Yellowstone seems to be getting closer with each passing year.  Since 2004, some areas of Yellowstone National Park have risen by as much as 10 inches.

#4 There are approximately 3,000 earthquakes in the Yellowstone area every single year.

#5 In the event of a full-scale eruption of Yellowstone, virtually the entire northwest United States will be completely destroyed.

#6 A massive eruption of Yellowstone would mean that just about everything within a 100 mile radius of Yellowstone would be immediately killed.

#7 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone could also potentially dump a layer of volcanic ash that is at least 10 feet deep up to 1,000 miles away.

#8 A full-scale eruption of Yellowstone would cover virtually the entire midwest United States with volcanic ash.  Food production in America would be almost totally wiped out.

#9 The “volcanic winter” that a massive Yellowstone eruption would cause would radically cool the planet.  Some scientists believe that global temperatures would decline by up to 20 degrees.

#10 America would never be the same again after a massive Yellowstone eruption.  Some scientists believe that a full eruption by Yellowstone would render two-thirds of the United States completely uninhabitable.

#11 Scientists tell us that it is not a matter of “if” Yellowstone will erupt but rather “when” the next inevitable eruption will take place.

What makes all of this even more alarming is that a number of other very prominent volcanoes around the world are starting to roar back to life right now as well.

For example, an Inquisitr article from back in July described how “the most dangerous volcano in Mexico” is starting to become extremely active…

Popocatepetl Volcano is at it again. The active volcano near Mexico City erupted again this morning, spewing ash up into the sky.

The volcano is currently in the middle of an extremely active phase. According to the International Business Times, the volcano has registered 39 exhalations in the last 24 hours.

An eruption earlier this month caused several flights to be canceled in and out of Mexico City.

The BBC notes that officials raised the alert level yellow following Popocateptl’s eruption on Saturday morning. Yellow is the third-highest caution level on the city’s seven step scale.

And an NBC News article from August noted that one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Japan has erupted 500 times so far this year…

Ash wafted as high as 3 miles above the Sakurajima volcano in the southern city of Kagoshima on Sunday afternoon, forming its highest plume since the Japan Meteorological Agency started keeping records in 2006. Lava flowed just over half a mile from the fissure, and several huge volcanic rocks rolled down the mountainside.

Though the eruption was more massive than usual, residents of the city of about 600,000 are used to hearing from their 3,664-foot neighbor. Kagoshima officials said in a statement that this was Sakurajima’s 500th eruption this year alone.

So what does all of this mean?

Are we now entering a time when volcanic eruptions will become much more common all over the globe?

Could we rapidly be approaching the day when an absolutely devastating volcanic eruption will paralyze much of North America?

Please feel free to share what you think by posting a comment below…

Yellowstone: Volcanic Eruption vs. Earthquake

The lava pool beneath Yellowstone National Park is more than twice as big as scientists previously believed, that's according to new research from the Geological Society of America. Scientists from the University of Utah say the lake of molten lava is nearly 50 miles long and 12 miles wide. Jake Lowenstern, a scientist with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, says even a small eruption could cause a minor disaster.

Supervolcano trigger: Study finds trigger for Armageddon supervolcano eruption

The supervolcano trigger for a supervolcano like Yellowstone Caldera would be the end of the Earth as we know it today. By researching supervolcano triggers, scientists are trying to understand the force that would have the power to change life on Earth and humanity forever. In a study published by Nature Geosciene on Jan. 5, 2014, researchers at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), in Grenoble, France, describe that the immense volume of a supervolcano's magma and its pressure would be enough to trigger an Armageddon-like supervolcano eruption.

“Scientists have reproduced the conditions inside the magma chamber of a supervolcano to understand what it takes to trigger its explosion. These rare events represent the biggest natural catastrophes on Earth except for the impact of giant meteorites,” reports ESRF.

Since the mechanisms that trigger supervolcano eruptions had been elusive until now, scientists simulated the intense pressure and heat in the caldera of a supervolcano by loading synthetic magma into a diamond capsule and firing high-energy X-rays inside - to probe for changes as the mixture reached critically high pressures.

The experiment showed that the transition from solid to liquid magma created a pressure which could crack more than 10 kilometers of Earth's crust above the volcano chamber. "Magma penetrating into the cracks will eventually reach the Earth's surface. And as it rises, it will expand violently - causing an explosion.”

"If we measure the density difference from solid to liquid magma we can calculate the pressure needed to provoke a spontaneous eruption," Mohamed Mezouar, an ESRF scientist, told BBC News.

"The effect is comparable to holding a football under water. When you release it, the air-filled ball is forced upwards by the denser water around it," said lead author Dr. Wim Malfait.

"We think Yellowstone currently has 10-30% partial melt, and for the overpressure to be high enough to erupt would take about 50%."

Besides the supervolcano in Yellowstone, there are about 20 other known supervolcanoes on Earth, including Lake Toba in Indonesia, Lake Taupo in New Zealand, and the somewhat smaller Phlegraean Fields near Naples in Italy.

According to Dr. Wim Malfait, in the event that the magma pressure would be about to trigger a supervolcano eruption, there would be warning signs like the ground rising hundreds of meters.

Even though supervolcano eruptions are triggered only once every 100,000 years on average, when they do occur, they cover countries in lava, and its ash causes catastrophic damages to Earth’s climate and ecology. Or as lead author Wim Malfait expressed it, "we knew the clock was ticking but we didn't know how fast: what would it take to trigger a super-eruption? This is something that, as a species, we will eventually have to deal with. Now we know you don't need any extra factor - a supervolcano can erupt due to its enormous size alone. Once you get enough melt, you can start an eruption just like that."

Massive Earthquake, Or Worse, Supervolcano Eruption Signs At Yellowstone Said 'Off The Scale'

A seismometer inside a borehole at Yellowstone National Park has begun reporting staggering underground activity near the southwest corner of Yellowstone Lake, possibly signaling the beginning of an eruption of the Super Volcano at the Yellowstone National Park. TRN has obtained the image of the Seismograph report and now YOU can see it for yourself. Yellowstone lake is pretty much the center of what is the Yellowstone Caldera; the mouth of a massive Super Volcano, located beneath the park. The activity began around 12:00 Noon, Mountain Standard Time (MST) on February 1, and was detected by a seismometer in Borehole B944 then continued, non-stop, all day yesterday getting worse and worse as the hours wore on.  The activity is continuing right now at 6:06 EST AM as this news article is being produced. The readings being reported from seismometer inside Bore Hole #B944 are literally "off-the-scale." Is an earthquake brewing, or is this the beginning of a catastrophic eruption of the Yellowstone "Super Volcano?"

Yellowstone Supervolcano 2.5X Larger Than Previously Thought

The supervolcano beneath the surface of Yellowstone National Park is 2.5 times larger than previously believed according to a study from the University of Utah.

The supervolcano is part of what is known as a caldera, an underground volcano forming a shape like a cauldron. More accurate details about the caldera were discovered by measuring the seismic waves of the underground magma which is anywhere from 3 to 9 miles beneath the surface of the earth. The length of the caldera is 88.5 km (~50 miles) with a width of 29 km (~18 miles). The lead author of the study, Jamie Farrell, claims the quantity of lava in the supervolcano is enough to give rise to what would be among the top three eruptions over the past 2.1 million years.

So just how spectacular would the eruption be? For a comparison, let’s go back to the year 1980 when the United States Geological Survey (USGS) refused to take no for an answer any compelled the city of Mount St. Helens to close off access to the nearby volcanic mountain of the same name and evacuate the town.

The volcano erupted with devastating effect which would have killed thousands of residents.

Super Volcano Under Yellowstone Park Has Given a Magnitude 4.8 Shake — Largest In 34 Years

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake has shaken Yellowstone National Park and rattled observers of one of the world’s deadliest super volcanoes. The quake — the most powerful in 30 years — struck near the Wyoming border with Montana yesterday, almost in the center of the United States’ most famous national park. Late last year a new study into the enormous super volcano found the underground magma chamber to be 2.5 times larger than previously thought — a cavern spanning some 90km by 30km and capable of holding 300 billion cubic kilometres of molten rock. If the sleeping giant were to wake, the outflow of lava, ash and smoke would devastate the United States and affect the entire world. NBC News this morning reported a spokesman for the USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory as saying the super volcano’s thin crust moved near the Norris Geyser Basin. There was no significant damage from the quake, he added. The quake is not expected to initiate any volcanic activity. Geologists have been closely watching the enormous Yellowstone Plateau in recent years with increasing evidence of...

Yellowstone Volcano Eruption in 2014? Are Animals Are Fleeing Park As ‘An Alert’?

A number of bloggers are posting videos that show bison and other animals allegedly leaving Yellowstone National Park, prompting theories that as earthquakes ramp up the seismic activity will set off the Yellowstone supervolcano.

Two of the main bloggers behind the discussion stress that there’s no way to know when the supervolcano will go off but note that the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that hit on March 30 seemed to set off a reaction from the animals, who are moving for a reason.

“Whether I believe this, or whether I don’t believe the story or not, I don’t know. I can tell you this story I saw this morning about the buffaloes running the street … whether or not it’s because of any activity in Yellowstone or not, I don’t know,” said blogger Jay Lee, who posted a story on his site tatoott1009.com.

“But I’ll tell you this, whatever the case may be, that their running away from Yellowstone is an alert of some sort.”

My uncle in Colorado is a retired geologist - he told me that one of the big signs of a massive earthquake being imminent is when you see a growing list of lost pets advertised in the paper.

He didn't say why they go missing, but my guess is that they're always near the ground level, so they always feel something.

Animals acting up like that is documented. They apparently can sense much lower rumblings than humans. That, or God just put in them an early warning system for humans to pay attention to.

Increased runaway pets is common after earthquakes. I suspect it's because they don't have a sense of anything being stable, so they go running off looking for some place that feels safe.

Riders Pushing Bison Back into Yellowstone National Park

For the past few days, riders from the Department of Livestock and Fish, Wildlife & Parks have travelled down the Gardiner Valley to push back 100 or more bison into Yellowstone National Park. It is expected that the routine will continue for the next few weeks.

FWP Region 3 supervisor Pat Flowers said they need to respond to any bison that moves beyond the northern boundary as they do not want them to move into the Paradise Valley.

It has happened for the second time that Montana agencies have allowed bison to roam an extended area north of Gardiner and Yellowstone National Park. Due to which many animals this year have travelled far.

The permission to allow roaming of bison in a larger area is said to be part of a 2011 adaptive adjustment to the Interagency Bison Management Plan. As per which, more territory should be provided to park bison when brucellosis is not a threat.

In late January, bison started migrating north in search of food. Since that time, hundreds of bison have roamed as far as Yankee Jim Canyon and that was when the riders came into action and started pushing them back.

They started the activity on Friday and were found to be working on Saturday and Monday. Flowers said though bison have travelled far distances, not to extent they were expecting.

"We're learning how to manage them under this scenario, and it's going to take some flexibility. But there's good cooperation between all the agencies", Flowers.

Christian MacKay, Executive Director of Department of Livestock, said on Saturday, a helicopter was used to find bison that was wandering outside the approved zone into the Tom Miner Basin.

As months will pass, riders will look for places outside the park to leave the bison where they would not pose a risk.

Yellowstone Volcano Eruption: Report Claims That US Has Contingency Deal With Brazil, Australia

If the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts then millions of U.S. citizens could end up in Brazil, Australia, or Argentina.

That’s according to the South African news website Praag, which said that the African National Congress was offered $10 billion a year for 10 years if it would build temporary housing for Americans in case of an eruption.

The potential eruption of the supervolcano, one of the biggest in the world, has been a hot topic ever since videos of animals allegedly fleeing the area before an earthquake were posted online. Although the veracity of the claims haven’t been backed up, dozens of bloggers and others have been trying to figure out what, if anything, is going on.

One of the latest theories is that the U.S. Geological Service and its partners, which keep an eye on the caldera, are hiding data from the public.

The Praag article says that the South African government fears that placing so many Americans in South Africa could dramatically change the country.

“South Africa will not be part of the plan, because there is a risk that millions of white Americans could be sent to South Africa in an emergency situation and that this would pose a risk to black national culture identity,” Dr. Siph Matwetwe, spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs, is quoted as saying.

“We have our own challenges, even if there is enough housing and infrastructure available, it will destabilize the country and may even bring back apartheid.”

The gigantic volcano in Yellowstone has erupted three times over the last two million years, covering a huge area of surrounding land. Maps from educational institutions and government officials project that up to 17 states could be fully or partially impacted if the volcano erupted again. The far south of Canada could also get hit, as well as the far north of Mexico.

Scientists aren’t sure when it will erupt next, although many have sought to assure the public that it probably won’t for a while. In reality, the volcano could erupt at any time, though officials would in theory be able to detect an impending eruption and alert Americans to the threat.

Hmm, well, if I had to pack my bags, I'd have to go with Australia. Really diverse climates, and at least they speak English, sort of!  Grin

Super Volcano is Bigger

The world’s authority on Yellowstone’s Super Volcano says it’s more than twice as big as scientists once thought. Does that mean it’s more likely to blow up soon? Penny Preston found Dr. Robert Smith at his home near Grand Teton, and found the answer.

Millions of people visit Yellowstone each year to see its geysers, fumeroles, hot springs, and mud pots. It’s the largest concentration of thermal features in the world. The park sits on top of the world’s largest active volcano. The Super Volcano. Its most recent eruption was more than 600,000 years ago. All that remains is the top, or caldera.

When you come into the Park they’ll give you a map and it has an overlay of the caldera. It’s huge.

The scientist who knows more about the Super Volcano than anyone, Dr. Robert Smith of the University of Utah, said, “Anytime you come to Yellowstone you have to drive uphill. And the reason is this giant plume of magma, is very hot, therefore it’s bullient, low density and it just lifts the surface up.”

Dr. Smith has been studying Yellowstone’s earthquakes and it’s Super Volcanos for almost sixty years.

He pointed out, “And these giant eruptions, supervolcanos if you wish, probably last many, many months, maybe even years.”

Not only that, they’re huge, thousands of times larger than Mount St. Helens. Smith and his students use siesmographs to map the magma pool underneath Yellowstone’s volcano, and satellites to determine how much the land swells or bulges. They found that the magma is, “2.5 times larger than we had originally imaged.”

The magma movement is signaled by earthquakes. Smith mentioned the 4.8 magnitude Norris area earthquake that damaged Lake Hotel last spring.

He explained, “It’s the biggest earthquake in 30 years.”

So, how likely is it that the big one will blow soon?

“If we were to have another big eruption, it would affect a large area, on the order of several states. But, as I said, that probability is very, very, very, very small. In my calculations it’s point zero, zero, zero, one percent.”

Smith said the magma pool is not getting bigger. His team added a lot more seismographs over the years, and are getting a clearer picture of the magma.

Road at Yellowstone National Park melts under recent heat

Most Americans are familiar with the geysers and hot springs that make Yellowstone National Park one of the most popular parks in the country, but what happens when that geothermal activity goes rogue?

Yellowstone discovered the answer to that question on Thursday when one of the park's roads melted into a hot, oily mess. The National Parks Service posted a photo of the damage to the park's official website.

"It basically turned the asphalt into soup," park spokesman Dan Hottle told USA Today reporters. "It turned the gravel road into oatmeal."

The extreme heat apparently caused hot oil to rise to the asphalt on Firehole Lake Drive, a 3.3-mile loop in the park.

Thanks to the literal hot mess, Great Fountain Geyser, White Dome Geyser and Firehole Lake are closed to motorists and hikers until further notice.

"There are plenty of other great places to see thermal features in the park," Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash told The Associated Press. "I wouldn't risk personal injury to see these during this temporary closure."

Yellowstone Volcano Eruption? USGS Records 99 Earthquakes In July Of 2014

This region has apparently been shaking a lot lately since half of July’s seismic activity occurred on July 6 and 7 and is a result of the ongoing north-south trending series of earthquakes, which began in September, 2013. Still, there is a good amount of shaking going on since 99 earthquakes were recorded in all.

Yellowstone ‘Super Eruption’ Could Blanket U.S. in Ash, Study Finds

An eruption could blanket the east coast in a few millimeters and bury the Rocky mountains in several meters of ash

If Yellowstone erupted into a massive, ash-spewing volcano, how far might the plume travel across the continental United States? From coast to coast, blanketing every city in ash, according to an unsettling new study.

Geophysicists developed a computer model of a Yellowstone “super eruption” that would spew 330 cubic kilometers of volcanic ash into the sky. The resulting ash cloud, depending on wind conditions, would blanket the continental United States in ash deposits of varying thickness, according to the study, published late August in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.

New York and Washington D.C., would get a light dusting of ash measuring roughly one-tenth of an inch, while San Francisco and Seattle would get a heaping 2 inches. Billings, Montana, meanwhile, would have to dig out from a 70-inch pile up.

If the findings sound far-flunged, so to speak, researchers point out that Yellowstone’s last massive eruption spewed ash over tens of thousands of square kilometers. Deposits from that eruption have been traced as far afield as Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. Fortunately, the last time Yellowstone erupted on that scale was some 2 million years ago and counting.

I was listening to a C2C program the other day. And they brought up the idea of a "terrorist" detonating a brief case nuke on top of the Yellowstone caldera. I myself never thought of this before. I guess if you really wanted to take America out, that would be one way to do it. Especially when you think about how much this is being pushed into the media.

Yellowstone Volcano: USGS Reports Deformations And 71 Earthquakes Around The Supervolcano

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has provided September’s monthly update on the Yellowstone volcano and 71 earthquakes were registered in the area of Yellowstone National Park, which is less than half of the 207 earthquakes reported in August and only slightly less than the 99 earthquakes from July.

Yellowstone Rising: USGS Reports Deformations And 71 Earthquakes Around The Supervolcano

But although Yellowstone’s caldera continues to shake, scientists say there’s nothing to worry about. In a related report by the Inquisitr, some doomsday preppers are concerned that a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption in modern times could trigger global cooling and some are already advising people to stock up on winter supplies.

Peering Inside Yellowstone’s Supervolcano

A giant reservoir of magma and hot rock beneath the Yellowstone supervolcano has been found and imaged. The newly found reservoir lies 12-28 miles below the surface, and is four-and-a-half times larger than the shallower, hot melted rock zone that powers current Yellowstone geysers and caused the caldera's last eruption some 70,000 years ago.

The volume of the newly imaged, deeper reservoir is a whopping 11,000 cubic-miles (46,000 cubic kilometers), which is about the volume of Long Island with 9 miles of hot rock piled on it, or 300 Lake Tahoes. The discovery begins to fill in a gray area about how Yellowstone connects to a far deeper plume of heat rising up from the Earth's mantle.

“It's existence has been suspected for a while,” said University of Utah geophysicist Hsin-Hua Huang of the newly imaged hot reservoir. Huang is the lead author of a paper announcing the discovery in the Thursday issue of the journal ScienceExpress.
Found! New Underwater Volcano Discovered In Hawaii

Far more carbon dioxide was being released from the ground at Yellowstone, previous research suggested, than could be explained by the smaller, shallower magma reservoir. That smaller reservoir was found using data from a local seismic array. The array used local earthquakes to seismically illuminate structures in the crust.

To see deeper, however, scientists needed a wider array to record how seismic waves from more distant earthquakes behaved as they passed through the unexplored zone under Yellowstone, Huang said. Seismic waves reveal a lot about the crust because they travel slower through hot rocks than through colder rocks. That wider seismic network came in the form of the USArray, a portable, temporary seismic network that's been crossing the continental United States since 2004.

“Until now we hadn't combined this data,” Huang said. It's the blending of that data that allowed Huang and his colleagues to see the giant hot, partially melted zone. “It's not a new technique, but no one had ever applied it to Yellowstone.”
Yellowstone Volcano's Killer Hazard: Earthquakes

The data also reveal that the shallower magma zone is about 9 percent melted rock, and the newly found lower zone is 2 percent melted. Neither is a giant chamber of magma and neither is in any danger of erupting -- contrary to popular misconceptions -- say the researchers.

The actual image Huang and his colleagues produced was created by what's called seismic tomography. The method is a lot like computerized tomography, or CT-scans used in medicine -- except that instead of x-rays passing through living tissues, geophysicists use seismic waves from earthquakes that pass through the Earth's interior.

“This is a snapshot,” said geoscientist Shaul Hurwitz of the U.S. Geological Survey. It's a higher-resolution view than was available before, he said, somewhat like improving a CT-scan from just seeing bones to seeing the finer structures of tissues. “I think they did a very good job looking at this gray area.”

http://dutchsinse.com/7172015-yellowstone-road-melts-new-geothermal-feature-causes-road-deformations/
7/17/2015 — YELLOWSTONE ROAD MELTS — NEW “GEOTHERMAL FEATURE” CAUSES ROAD DEFORMATIONS
7/17/15

A well used road at the Yellowstone National Park supervolcano is melting due to a new “geothermal feature” forming below ground.

This has happened before, however this time around, instead of blaming it on “hot weather” / “the sun” , officials are admitting the melting of the road is actually due to a new geothermal feature taking form.

Now , July 17 2015, Upper Terrace Drive near Mammoth Hot Springs is closed, measured with subsurface soil temperatures exceeding 152F / 69C.

Last year, the same thing happened, roads actually melted to the point where oil in the pavement was bubbling.

Defying logic (and reason) , an instant cover story was spun up by the Media (and National Park Service) .. trying to make the claim that the 80F / 27C temperatures were somehow magically melting the asphalt (SMH + a real life facepalm at that notion).

At the time when the roads previously melted, I was a lone voice in the wilderness telling everyone that there was not a snowballs chance in hell that the Sun would be melting roads in Northern Wyoming on a partly cloudy 80F week.

Within a day of blaming the Sun, they backtracked a bit, and said it was a COMBINATION of Sun and some heat from the ground Smiley .

______

Here we are today in July 2015, and we have a full admission of a geothermal cause.

Most likely, the only reason they’re admitting a new geothermal feature, is because tourists noticed the feature, and it became undeniable.

Recent news reports over the past few months have shown that Yellowstone supervolcano is much bigger than previously thought, measuring an additional 11 “grand canyons” worth of stored magma below the Volcanic caldera at the National Park.

__________

Road in Yellowstone National Park closed to vehicles due to thermal activity

http://www.kpax.com/story/29568325/road-in-yellowstone-national-park-closed-to-vehicles-due-to-thermal-activity

“Rangers at Yellowstone National Park have temporarily closed Upper Terrace Drive near Mammoth Hot Springs to vehicles due to a new thermal feature that is affecting the road.

A press release from the park says that the new feature became “visibly active” in May near the Upper Terrace parking lot, creating new small terraces adjacent to the drive.

Geologists and rangers monitored the thermal feature and found temperatures up to 152 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rangers noticed additional thermal activity this week adjacent to and under the pavement, which triggered the temporary closure.

Thermal imaging shows heat under the pavement as well.

Park geologist Dr. Hank Heasler said, “We have known this area had heat near the surface based on the fact that it does not hold snow in the winter. We drilled two holes a half-meter (20 inches) deep, both of which now have hot water bubbling at the surface or very near the surface.”

Park visitors are still able to walk on the Upper Terrace Drive.

Maintenance staff is preparing bumper logs to protect the thermal feature and keep the outflow off of the pavement.

Once those are in place, the road will reopen to vehicle traffic.

Heasler noted, “As in all of the thermal areas, visitors need to stay on the boardwalks or paved areas and avoid touching thermal features.”

The Timebomb Under Yellowstone: Scientists Warn Of 'Nuclear Winter' Across U.S. If Supervolcano Erupts

A supervolcano in the heart of America's northwest has the potential to blanket the US in a 'nuclear winter'.

If it were to erupt, the Yellowstone supervolcano would be one thousand times as powerful as the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption, experts claim.

Forget Yellowstone... Snake River Plain’s volcano is a MUCH BIGGER threat to America

This entire cliff at Snake River Plain would have been formed as a result of a super eruption

Eruptions at Snake River Plain in Idaho were “significantly larger” than geologists had previously thought.

Scientists from the University of Leicester discovered there were a staggering 12 massive eruptions over the course of four million years, beginning 12 million years ago.

The massive eruptions helped to form the 100 kilometre-wide Snake River Basin, with one of the most powerful eruptions occurring 8.1 million years ago. The eruption's volume exceeded 1,900 km3 and created a 1.3km thick caldera.

Furthermore, the Snake River Plain is situated on the Yellowstone Hotspot track, a region which spans from Nevada, through Oregon and Idaho and then to Wyoming where Yellowstone Volcano is located.

Dr Tom Knott from the University of Leicester, said: "While it is well-know that Yellowstone has erupted catastrophically in recent times perhaps less widely appreciated is that these were just the latest in a protracted history of numerous catastrophic super-eruptions that have burned a track along the Snake River eastwards from Oregon to Yellowstone from 16 Ma to present.

Yellowstone may look stunning, but an eruption would be catastrophic

"The size and magnitude of this newly defined eruption is as large, if not larger, than better known eruptions at Yellowstone, and it is just the first in an emerging record of newly discovered super-eruptions during a period of intense magmatic activity between eight and 12 million years ago."
