Mass Evacuation Underway on Indonesian Island as Sinabung Volcano Erupts
http://sputniknews.com/environment/20150604/1022923462.html#ixzz3c4V1v1NB
6/4/15

Thousands of people have been evacuated on Indonesian Island as the alert level over the eruption of the Sinabung volcano was raised to the highest level.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Thousands of people have been evacuated on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island as the alert level over the eruption of the Sinabung volcano was raised to the highest level four, Indonesia’s Jakarta Post reports.

"Until this afternoon the evacuation is still going on," Commander of the Mount Sinabung Disaster Mitigation Agency task force, Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna told the newspaper on Wednesday, adding that the pile of lava at the peak of Sunabung’s crater amounts to three million cubic meters and could slide down covering an area within a seven-kilometre (4-mile) radius around the volcano.

According to Asep, people living within a radius of seven kilometres from the crater were taken to a temporary evacuation center at the Parish Catholic Church in Kabanjahe, the capital of the Karo Regency located in the North Sumatra province.
At least 1,500 residents had been evacuated from the area as of Thursday morning, according to Jakarta Post.
The volcano on the 8,070 feet-high Mount Sinabung, located near the capital of the North Sumatra province woke up on September 15, 2013, after a three-year-long break.
In February 2014 16 people died during one of its eruptions.
In February 2015 lava flows from Sinabung burnt several houses abandoned by their residents.
Indonesia is located in the so-called Ring of Fire quake zone, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

6/08/2015 — 85+ VOLCANIC BLASTS IN ONE DAY! MT. SAKURAJIMA IN JAPAN — MAJOR ACTIVITY SHOWING

Asia volcano alert … OVER 85 different blasts from Sakurajima Volcano in less than 1 days time (from 6am to 11pm)

sakurajima aa

Also, notice the steady steaming off the back side of Sakurajima, which is Mount Ontake caldera (a different volcano in this complex)… Ontake caldera could also erupt in a large blast if things carry on this way.

Video sped up 64X speed to just get a rough count from 6am to dark.. 15 hours long sped up 64X reduces the length of this video to 14min 10sec.

______

Video showing the 85+ blasts in one days time here:

______

No exaggeration to say these 85+ blasts (over the course of 1 day) are a huge number of volcanic events from a single volcano.

Yes, Sakurajima is “active” , but this takes the cake by far when it comes to number of different blasts in one days time. I’ve seen this volcano send of 10 or 15 large blasts in one day before.. but in this case.. its OVER 85 different blasts since yesterday morning.

View the recorded real time streams from Sakurajima here:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ushine-2

______

Keep in mind the other West Pacific volcanic activity taking place South in Indonesia near Sinabung and Toba Supervolcano, also with the new eruption off the coast of Japan and Shindake volcano, the new Island forming at Nishinoshima Volcano, and the coming to life of the 800 year dormant Mount Hakone Volcano.

This is a lot of volcanic activity to see in just a few weeks time.

Indonesian volcano Mount Sinabung erupts: Over 10,000 evacuated
6/16/15

More than 10,000 villagers have fled a rumbling volcano in western Indonesia this month, most in recent days after a series of violent eruptions, an official said on Tuesday.

Authorities raised the alert status of Mount Sinabung, on Sumatra island, to the highest level at the start of June after detecting a sharp increase in activity.

The volcano, which came back to life two years ago after a period of inactivity, erupted violently at the weekend, spewing hot ash and rocks high into the air.

Sinabung - which killed 16 people in a fierce eruption last year - was continuing to belch out a thick plume of smoke high into the sky on Tuesday, covering homes far away with a coating of ash.

About 7500 residents have been evacuated from their villages following the weekend eruptions, disaster agency official Tri Budiarto told AFP.

They "left their homes on motorcycles, in cars and on military trucks. They were from six villages located in the danger zone south and southeast of the volcano," he said.

Several thousand people fled their homes at the start of the month when the alert status was lifted, and the total number of evacuees now stands at 10,714, said the disaster agency.

The evacuees are sheltering in government buildings and places of worship in Kabanjahe town, about 10 kilometres from Sinabung.

Volcanic activity remained high on Tuesday, with Sinabung spewing out rocks and hot gas over a distance of three kilometres four times since early morning, said Armen Putra, head of the volcano observation post.

"We could still feel tremors. Ash one to two millimetres thick covered roads and homes located 15 kilometres away," he said.

"It could take weeks before it eases, but for now, it is dangerous for people living nearby so we have recommended for them to evacuate."

After Sinabung rumbled back to life in 2013, more than 10,000 people fled from nearby villages. Some have returned home but more than 6000 of the original evacuees are still living in shelters.

The volcano has also had a devastating economic impact, with the disaster agency estimating it caused more than $100 million in damage last year and in 2013 in a broad range of areas, including infrastructure, farming and tourism.

Sinabung is one of 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a belt of seismic activity running around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

Ubinas volcano erupts, emits ashes
6/22/15

The Ubinas volcano explosion occurred this morning and spread ashes of 15 kilometers around the crater.

Ubinas volcano exploded this morning, spreading ashes over the Ubinas valley, reports El Comercio.

The explosion occurred at 8:50 a.m. this morning and spread ashes 15 kilometers wide around the volcano. The ashes primarily affected those in southeasterly direction at Ubinas Valley villages.

The Volcanological Observatory Metallurgical Mining Geological Institute (Ingemmet) reported the locals of Ubinas, Tonohaya, Anascapa and Sacohay were the most affected.

Ingemmet recommends that the valley’s citizens take precautions to protect against the layer of ash that could harm livestock and water sources. Locals should wear masks and glasses.

The volcano recorded numerous explosions earlier this month and for the last few months in high frequency.

In late April Ubinas and Matalaque declared state of emergency for the high level of activity registered by the volcano.

Volcanic ash causes Indonesia airport closures
7/10/15

Three airports in Indonesia, including in the tourist hotspot Bali, are to remain shut until at least Saturday, after a volcanic eruption.

Mount Raung in East Java has been spewing ash into the air for nearly a week, raising concerns it could interfere with aircraft safety.

Bali's Denpasar airport, a top destination for Australians, was closed late on Thursday, stranding travellers.

The government said this and two small airports in East Java would stay shut.

Earlier advice had been that all airports would remain out of action until late Friday.

One Of The Most Dangerous Volcanoes In North America Is Roaring To Life

More than 25 million people live in the vicinity of North America’s 2nd-highest volcano, and in recent weeks this volcano has been steadily rumbling and has been spewing out massive amounts of black smoke and ash.  I have previously written about “the most dangerous mountain in the United States” (Mt. Rainier), but if the volcano that I am talking about today experiences a full-blown explosive eruption it could potentially be a cataclysmic event beyond what most of us would dare to imagine.  Popocatepetl is an Aztec word that means “smoking mountain”, and it is also the name of a giant volcano that sits approximately 50 miles away from Mexico City’s 18 million residents.  “Popo”, as it is called by locals, was dormant for much of the 20th century, but it came back to life in 1994.  And now all of this unusual activity in recent weeks has many wondering if a major eruption may be imminent.

Historians tell us that Popocatepetl had a dramatic impact on the ancient Aztecs.  Giant mud flows produced by massive eruptions covered entire Aztec cities.  In fact, some of these mud flows were so large that they buried entire pyramids in super-heated mud.

But we haven’t witnessed anything like that in any of our lifetimes, so it is hard to even imagine devastation of that magnitude.

In addition to Mexico City’s mammoth population, there are millions of others that live in the surrounding region.  Overall, there are about 25 million people that live in the immediate vicinity of Popocatepetl.  Thankfully, we haven’t seen a major eruption of the volcano in modern times, but at some point that will change.

As most of you already know, Mexico sits on the “Ring of Fire” that stretches along the outer rim of the Pacific Ocean.  Over the past couple of years seismic activity throughout this area has started to really heat up, and according to Volcano Discovery there are dozens of volcanoes associated with the Ring of Fire that have recently erupted.

That is why so many people are alarmed about the very unusual activity that we began to see from Popocatepetl starting in mid-September.  The following is from a report that was posted on September 23rd…

CENAPRED reported that during 16-22 September the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 15-89 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. Variable nighttime or morning crater incandescence was observed most days, and 1-13 daily explosions were registered.

In recent days, the activity at Popocatepetl seems to be getting stronger and more intense.  This next excerpt is from an article the Telegraph posted on October 21st…

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano put on a spectacular display as it spewed out huge clouds of ash in to the sky.

The volcano, which is 50 miles south east of Mexico City spat ash and smoke 2500 metres above the volcano’s crater.

Mexico’s volcano experts says the volcano had around 40 exhalations with a series a of rumblings in the past three months.

And just over the weekend there was even more activity.  This is what the BBC reported on October 30th…

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano has erupted spewing ash and black smoke into the sky.

The volcano is located 50 miles (80 km) southeast of the capital, Mexico City.

Could all of this be the build up to a major event of some sort?

As I mentioned above, 18 million people live in Mexico City.  And we do know that ash from Popocatepetl can reach Mexico City.  In fact, this actually happened on a small scale back in 2013…

The Popocatepetl volcano just east of Mexico City has spit out a cloud of ash and vapor 2 miles (3 kilometers) high over several days of eruptions, and Mexico City residents awoke Saturday to find a fine layer of volcanic dust on their cars.

Mexico City is not in a particularly safe location.  In addition to Popocatepetl, the city also sits in an area that is prone to experiencing earthquakes.  One of these days we could see an event that could destroy much or all of Mexico City, and if that happened the entire economy of Mexico would immediately collapse and millions of refugees would start streaming north.

So ultimately Popocatepetl is not just a Mexican problem.  If a major eruption took place, it would quickly become a U.S. problem too.

Speaking of the United States, the unprecedented earthquake swarm near San Francisco that I reported on the other day is getting even worse.  The following comes from NBC News…

The earthquake swarms in one San Francisco Bay Area city keeps rising, and according to the US Geological Center’s past historical data, has shattered old records.

As of Wednesday, the USGS noted that San Ramon, about 45 miles from San Francisco had experienced 446 quakes, including 86 quakes that were a magnitude of 2.0 or higher, since Oct. 13. A total of 28 earthquakes have been documented alone since Tuesday.

San Ramon had previously set a record in 2003 when a swarm of 120 earthquakes struck there over 31 days.

And that is not the only unusual “shaking” inside the U.S. that is raising eyebrows lately.  Not too far from Yellowstone, a giant crack in the ground has formed…

A dramatic crack has suddenly formed in the foothills of Wyoming‘s Bighorn Mountains that measures an impressive 750 yards long and 50 yards wide. It was discovered recently by surprised backcountry hunters who travel frequently to the area in search of game.

First reported by SNS Outfitter & Guides, a hunting company, on their Facebook page, the mammoth chasm appeared over the course of just a couple of weeks. It’s an impressive example of just how quickly very large geological events can occur under the right conditions.

“Everyone here is calling it ‘the gash.’ It’s a really incredible sight,” wrote SNS on the group’s Facebook page.

In just about every possible way that you can imagine, our world is becoming more unstable.  In North America, we have been blessed with a long period of peace and prosperity, and we have had only a few major seismic events over the past several decades.

But now things are changing.  The planet is starting to shake, and I believe that it is going to get a lot worse in the years ahead.  And these great natural disasters that are coming will combine with all of the other major problems that we are currently facing to create something of a “perfect storm” which will bring our nation to its knees.

MONSTER ERUPTIONS: Panic as two volcanoes EXPLODE simultaneously causing mass evacuation

MAJOR evacuations have been sparked by the SIMULTANEOUS eruption of two volcanoes - including one of the world's most feared - spewing toxic gas and ash clouds for miles.

The two volcanoes are thousands of miles apart but are on the edge of the same tectonic plate – the Phillippine Plate – sparking fears of a major seismic shift, more volcanic activity and even earthquakes and tsunamis.

More than 1,200 people have been evacuated from within a 1.9-mile containment zone around Mount Egon in Kupang, eastern Indonesia - one of the most volcanic parts of the globe.

It was followed moments later by the eruption of Zhupanovsky on Russia's eastern coast which spewed lava FIVE MILES into the air.

The latter explosion is likely to affect air traffic in Russia, but the huge ash cloud is also drifting east over the Pacific Ocean so the impact on flights could be much worse

Mass EVACUATION Mexico City on alert : One of world’s MOST DANGEROUS volcanoes threatens to BLOW : Is Mexico city doomed

THOUSANDS of people living by one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes have been put on evacuation alert after the monster peak began spewing toxic gas and ash.

Tens of thousands of people live in the farming villages on the volcano’s flanks while roughly

25 million people live within a 60 mile radius.

Historians tell us that Popocatepetl had a dramatic impact on the ancient Aztecs. After a huge eruption giant mud flows produced by massive eruptions covered entire Aztec cities.  In fact, some of these mud flows were so large that they buried entire pyramids in super-heated mud.

So ultimately Popocatepetl is not just a Mexican problem.  If a major eruption took place, it would quickly become a U.S. problem too.

Thousands of people were placed on an evacuation warning this week

The Popocatépetl volcano, just 35 miles from Mexico City and only 20 miles from nearby cityPeubla sent a mile high plume of ash into the air, putting thousands of people living within 10 miles of it on a yellow alert to be ready to evacuate should activity increase. The Mexican capital is the world’s fourth most populated city and home to 20 million people, while Peubla has more than 6 million people living there, and all could be at risk in both cites in the event of a catastrophic eruption.

The volcano alert follows fears earlier this month that a second large volcano in Mexico – the 3,850 metres-high Colima in western Mexico – could be about to face a large scale eruption for the first time in 100 years.

Popocatépetl last saw a major eruption in 2000, but early warnings saw 41,000 people evacuated in advance, averting a major disaster.

In 2005 it had a minor eruption, but activity has been increasing since 2012, with this week’s some of the most notable, prompting officials to issue the warning. If the volcano experienced a massive eruption, an estimated nine million people would be in the blast zone and the impact on the atmosphere could be catastrophic.

Popocatépetl has erupted more than 20 times since 1519, according to records.

The glacier-covered peak is 5,426 metres-high.

Meanwhile Colima experienced a saw an ash cloud of 1.8 miles high expelled earlier this month.

This also put locals on standby for evacuations immediately afterwards.

Dramatic increase in volcanic eruptions around the world in February 2016 and nobody knows why

We are currently experiencing a dramatic increase in volcanic eruptions around the world in 2016. And nobody knows why…
What is going on with all these volcanoes erupting? Are we going to see a big quake hit somewhere? Things are starting to reach excessive levels.

Three volcanoes erupt in Nicaragua, and a fourth may join them – Disaster experts on alert

Currently, the Momotombo volcano, the Télica volcano and the Masaya volcano are erupting and will probably continue to do so.

Meanwhile, the Cerro Negro recorded an increase in seismic activity last week and could start erupting any time now.

Disaster experts from around the world are concerned and assess the potential risks from these active volcanoes.

Nicaragua, February 23, 2016 – Volcano experts from the US, UK, Costa Rica and local geologists are observing activity at four active peaks in Nicaragua after the flurry of explosions.

In fact, there’s been so much volcanic and seismic activity in Nicaragua lately that these disaster experts are carefully studying and observing the situation.

Momotombo, Télica and Masaya began erupting at the same time, and continue to do so.

Meanwhile, Cerro Negro, which has so far not erupted, recorded bursts of seismic activity last week.

The danger of this seismic activity is because it’s from Plinian eruptions, which are characterised by a high level of explosiveness.

To date, Momotombo hasn’t placed any nearby residents in danger, but that’s not to say it couldn’t.

In 1610, a Momotombo eruption forced residents of the then-Spanish city of León to relocate 30 miles to the west. – Express.co.uk

Events recently have really been heating up - earthquake 7.0+ mags slowly becoming normal, and now this? And then the massive sea animals die-offs continue to grow exponentially, and not to mention too the UN votes for that big climate change deal and possibly Obama pushing a Palestinean state there this Friday!

New Pavlof Volcano rumblings could be prelude to eruption

An increase in seismic activity at Pavlof Volcano, which erupted spectacularly in March, has prompted Alaska Volcano Observatory staff to step up monitoring of the Alaska Peninsula volcano.

In a brief update Friday, raising Pavlof’s alert level to watch and its aviation color code to orange, staff at the observatory said they haven’t been able to visually confirm any eruption from satellite data or camera images, due to clouds obscuring the volcano.

“At about 10:35 a.m. (Alaska time) seismic activity at Pavlof Volcano increased to levels typically associated with low-level eruptive activity and it is possible that an eruption of Pavlof Volcano may be in progress,” AVO staff wrote.

Major Eruption Imminent? Earthquake Swarms Reported At Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier And Mt. St. Helens

Is an eruption of one or more of the major volcanoes in the northwest United States imminent?  In recent days, very large earthquake swarms have been reported at Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens.  It is certainly not unusual for each of these volcanoes to experience earthquake swarms from time to time, but right now we are seeing this happen at all three volcanoes simultaneously, and this comes at a time when seismic activity along the Ring of Fire is on the rise all over the planet.  If you have followed my work for a while, then you probably already know that I have been consistently warning that an eruption of Mt. Rainier is coming, and of course Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens are exceedingly dangerous volcanoes as well.  If any one of the three were to erupt on a massive scale, it would instantly become the biggest news story of the year. (Read More...)

40 Volcanoes Are Erupting Right Now As The Crust Of The Earth Becomes Increasingly Unstable

Have you noticed that our planet has begun to shake, rattle and roll? Over the past few days we have seen major volcanic eruptions in Costa Rica and Indonesia, and according to Volcano Discovery more than 40 volcanoes around the planet are erupting right now as you read this article.

Meanwhile, earthquakes continue to shake the globe with alarming regularity. Just last week, Ecuador was hit by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake and a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in rapid succession. Overall, there have been nearly 3,000 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 or greater within the past month globally. So yes, I write constantly about the rapidly accelerating deterioration of our financial system, but the coming "collapse" is not just about money.

I am convinced that we are entering a "perfect storm," in which a confluence of factors will absolutely cripple society and bring about changes that most of us would not even dare to imagine right now.

Let's talk about the volcanic eruptions that we have seen in recent days. The eruption down in Costa Rica took authorities completely by surprise, and a thick layer of dust and ash is coating vehicles and buildings 30 miles away in the capital city of San Jose:

A volcano has erupted in central Costa Rica, belching smoke and ash up to 3,000m (9,840ft) into the air.

Hundreds of people have gone to hospital, complaining of breathing difficulties and skin problems.

Some schools were shut and some flights into the country cancelled or diverted.

People in the capital San Jose, about 45km (30 miles) west of the Turrialba volcano, said layers of ash had coated buildings and cars and there was a fierce smell of sulphur.

Leading up to this eruption, there were "swarms of small earthquakes" in the vicinity of the volcano, but scientists assured the public that these earthquake swarms were "not signs of an imminent eruption."

Keep that in mind, because later in the article I am going to show you something.

But first let us talk about the other major eruption that is happening right now. Down in Indonesia, Mount Sinabung has violently erupted, and this is causing all sorts of chaos.

The death toll from a volcanic eruption in western Indonesia has climbed to six, an official said Sunday, with fears more could have been trapped by the hot ash.

Three people also remain in a critical condition after Mount Sinabung, a highly-active volcano on Sumatra island, unleashed a series of fresh eruptions on Saturday afternoon, disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

"Nine people were struck by the hot clouds. Six died, and three others remain critical with burns," he said, adding the injured had been taken to hospital.

According to one report, "torrents of lava" are pouring out of the volcano, and this is just one example of how volcanoes that were once considered to be "inactive" are coming to life all over the world. In fact, prior to 2010, Mount Sinabung had been dormant for about 400 years.

Meanwhile, there is "unprecedented" activity at Iceland's very dangerous Baroabunga volcano. This one is not erupting quite yet, but we definitely want to keep an eye on it, because a major eruption there would have serious implications for Europe.

To finish this article, I would like to provide an update to a piece that I posted last week on End of the American Dream. Just prior to the eruption of the Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica, there were significant earthquake swarms in the vicinity of the volcano. Well, the exact same thing is happening at three major volcanoes in the United States right now.

I would like to share three images with you that come from Google Earth via the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. This first image shows the earthquake activity that has taken place in the area around Mt. St. Helens in recent days. Over the past month there have been 95 earthquakes in the region, and most of them have been centered right along the core of the volcano.

This next image shows what has been happening at Mt. Rainier. Those that follow my work closely already know that I consider it to be the most dangerous mountain in America and that I believe that a major eruption of the volcano is coming in the not-too-distant future. There have been 36 earthquakes at Mt. Rainier over the past month, and once again most of them have occurred right along the core of the volcano.

Mt. Hood is also a very dangerous volcano. There have been 126 earthquakes in the vicinity of Mt. Hood in recent days, and in this image you can see that the earthquakes have been centered very tightly on a spot on the south face of the mountain. This is alarming because it was also the south side of Mt. St. Helens that violently erupted back in 1980.

When there are major volcanic eruptions or major earthquakes in other parts of the globe, many Americans don't seem to care too much because they don't think that this rise in global seismic activity is any sort of a threat to them personally.

But the truth is that the entire west coast of the United States lies along the Ring of Fire, and virtually every other section of the Ring of Fire is roaring to life these days.

At some point, there will be historic earthquakes on the west coast.

At some point, there will be historic volcanic eruptions on the west coast.

Scientists assure us that these things are inevitable.

So let us certainly hope for the best, but putting our heads in the sand and pretending that these dangers do not exist is not going to help matters one bit.

Get prepared while you still can, because at some point time will run out.

pastor Danny Castle has probably the best sermons on preaching/warning about hell - since the 2nd half of the 20th century, they've really targeted the youth in terms of all of this spiritual wickedness (ie, rock music, evolution, etc). This is one reason we're seeing hell enlargening herself now - like the rich man in Luke 16, we're seeing an astronomical amount of people underneath screaming for everyone to REPENT.

Too bad today's IFB churches (not all, but most) are not preaching biblical repentance (2nd Cor 7:11).

Central Philippines volcano spouts massive ash column

A rumbling volcano in the central Philippines shot a huge column of ash into the sky on Saturday, prompting the official aviation agency to warn aircraft to stay away, authorities said. Mount Kanlaon, located on the central island of Negros, launched a plume of whitish-grey ash about 1.5 kilometres (almost a mile) into the air, said Kenn John Veracruz of the official Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Major Volcanoes Along The Ring Of Fire Are Going Off Like Firecrackers

So far this week, we have seen the most dangerous volcano in Mexico erupt, and three major volcanoes in Indonesia all erupted within the space of just 72 hours.  Mexico and Indonesia are both considered to be part of “the Ring of Fire”, and all along the perimeter of the Pacific Ocean volcanoes are starting to go off like firecrackers right now.  According to Volcano Discovery, 25 volcanoes in areas that are considered to be within the Ring of Fire have erupted recently.  Our planet appears to have entered a time of increased seismic activity, and those the follow my work regularly know that this is a theme that I revisit repeatedly.  Sadly, most Americans are not paying too much attention to this increase in seismic activity, but the truth is that it has very serious implications for the west coast of the United States.

It didn’t make a big splash in the mainstream media in the United States, but this week Mt. Popocatepetl erupted and coated homes and vehicles in Mexico City with a thick layer of volcanic dust.  And now some scientists are becoming concerned that this recent activity may be building up to “a major disastrous eruption”…

Residents of Mexico City woke this morning to find ash coating cars and buildings after the Popocatepetl volcano belched out another toxic cloud.

The volcano is considered one of the world’s most dangerous due to its proximity to the city with more than nine million inhabitants.

Around 25 million people live within 62 miles of the crater of the 5,426-metre magma mount, who could also be affected.

There are fears the peak is building towards a major disastrous eruption after activity increased over the past few years, although, it has been periodically erupting since 1994.

There is a very good reason why Mt. Popocatepetl is considered to be the most dangerous volcano in Mexico.  If there ever is “a major disastrous eruption”, millions upon millions of people will be directly affected and it will bring Mexico’s economy to a screeching halt.  The following comes from one of my previous articles…

Popocatepetl is an Aztec word that can be translated as “smoking mountain”, and more than 25 million people live within range of this extraordinarily dangerous mountain. Experts tell us that during the time of the Aztecs, entire cities were completely buried in super-heated mud from this volcano. In fact, the super-heated mud was so deep that it buried entire pyramids. In the event of a full-blown eruption, Mexico City’s 18 million residents probably wouldn’t be buried in super-heated mud, but it would still be absolutely devastating for Mexico’s largest city.

Meanwhile, the nation of Indonesia has been rocked by three significant volcanic eruptions in just a three day period…

Giant clouds of ash engulfed the skies as Mount Sinabung became the third volcano to erupt in Indonesia, in the space of just three days.

Mount Rinjani on Lombok island near Bali erupted on Monday, with the Sinabung volcano on Sumatra island and Mount Gamalama in the Moluccas chain of islands following suit late yesterday.

There are approximately 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, but this is still very unusual even for them.

But of even greater concern for Indonesia (and for the rest of the planet) is the magnitude 5.8 earthquake that shook Mount Tambora on July 31st.  Back in 1815, an eruption at Mount Tambora was the largest that has ever been recorded, and there are concerns that this recent very large earthquake may be a sign that another mega-eruption is on the way.

If you are not familiar with the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, it was truly a historic event.  More than 70,000 people died from the immediate blast, and the climate of the entire planet was cooled substantially for years afterwards.  The following description of that eruption comes from Wikipedia…

After a large magma chamber inside the mountain filled over the course of several decades, volcanic activity reached a historic climax in the eruption of 10 April 1815.[5] This eruption had a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) of 7, the only unambiguously confirmed VEI-7 eruption since the Lake Taupo eruption in about AD 180.[6] (The 946 eruption of Paektu Mountain might also have been VEI-7.)

With an estimated ejecta volume of 160 km3 (38 cu mi), Tambora’s 1815 outburst is the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The explosion was heard on Sumatra, more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) away. Heavy volcanic ash falls were observed as far away as Borneo, Sulawesi, Java, and the Maluku Islands.

The following year became known as “the year without a summer” because the global climate cooled down so dramatically.  There were crop failures all across the northern hemisphere, and as a result the world experienced the worst famine of the 19th century.

Someday, there will be another eruption of that magnitude at Mount Tambora or elsewhere along the Ring of Fire, and the world will experience another horrifying famine.

It is just a matter of time.

And let us not forget that the entire west coast of the United States also sits along the Ring of Fire.  In my novel and in my new book I warn about the coming eruption of Mt. Rainier.  But that is certainly not the only volcano on the west coast that we need to be concerned about.  In recent months there has also been increased seismic activity at Mt. Hood and at Mt. St. Helens.

We have been very fortunate not to have had any major volcanic eruptions in the continental United States since the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980, but scientists assure us that we are well overdue for the next one.

In addition, the Yellowstone supervolcano may not be considered to be directly along the Ring of Fire, but it has also been exhibiting very strange behavior this year as well.  When it finally erupts, all of our lives are going to change in a single moment.

So there are definitely some big reasons why we should be concerned about all of these volcanoes that are currently erupting around the world.  It may not be tomorrow, but eventually Americans are going to see firsthand how a major volcanic eruption can permanently alter their lives.
