So that's how many now you have documented here that are showing new activity? Looks like several are showing some serious activity.

Here's another...

Eruptive activity reported at Indonesia’s Semeru volcano

March 29, 2012 – JAVA, Indonesia – Our expedition leader Doni just returned from a visit to Semeru and reports that on 27 March, he and our group observed frequent explosions every few minutes, with many powerful enough to eject glowing bombs to produce small glowing avalanches down on the southern flank of the volcano. Semeru, the highest volcano on Java, and one of its most active, lies at the southern end of a volcanic massif extending north to the Tengger caldera. Semeru, a favourite mountain trekking destination, has been in almost continuous eruption since 1967. It is known for its regular ash explosions that typically occur at intervals of 10-30 minutes. –Volcano Discovery

April 1, 2012 – SICILY – Europe’s tallest and most active volcano, Mount Etna, has erupted for the fifth time in 2012, spewing hot lava and ash in the early hours of Sunday. The lava, which could be seen moving down the mountain’s side just after 4am local time, continued to spew until around 5.30 am, according to local news reports. Ash from the eruption landed on the villages at the foot of the volcano; however no damage was reported and nearby airports remained open. –ITN

http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/2012/04/02/alert-level-raised-to-orange-on-colombias-nevado-del-ruiz-volcano/

April 2, 2012 – COLOMBIA – Central Colombia authorities closed the national “Los Nevados” park Sunday after an increase in seismic activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. Meteorological authorities raised the alert level to orange in 17 municipalities in Tolima and Caldas departments while visitors are prohibited to enter the park in an area in four departments. The measures came at the beginning of the holy week in which usually some 20,000 tourists visit the nature reserve. An orange alert does not mean that an eruption is imminent. –Colombia Reports

April 3, 2012 – CANARY ISLANDS - IRIN volcano 24 hour monitoring network of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded two earthquakes of 1.7 and 2.7 magnitudes on the Richter scale this Sunday on the island of El Hierro. The largest of the earthquakes, recorded at 22.03 hours, occurred southwest of the town of El Pinar. This event was located at sea 15 kilometers deep. The second quake also occurred southwest of El Pinar at 20.36 hours, to 13 km depth and epicenter in the sea. Since last March 24, the island of El Hierro has been nine earthquakes, including this Sunday, between 1.5 and 2.7 °. Of these, were substantial enough to be felt by the population. Sunday’s tremors were located west of Frontier and southwest of El Pinar, and were 10 and 29 kilometers deep. –La Opinion.es  (translated)

Dramatic increase in activity reported at Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz volcano
April 4, 2012 – COLOMBIA - Nevado del Ruiz seems to be getting closer to a new eruption. INGEOMINAS reports that during the last week, there has been a significant increase in the activity of the volcano, which can be summarized as follows: From March 27, there have been phases of volcanic tremor pulses related probably to deep magma movements. Since the last week, there were seismic signals interpreted with rock fracturing, i.e. dike intrusions, located west of the active crater. Similar seismic activity was observed prior to the eruptions in November 1985 and September 1989, although this time it is less energetic. On March 29 at 10:54 local time, for a period of 25 minutes, there were over 135 earthquakes located south of Arenas crater at a depth of about 4 km. From 04:00 am local time on 31 March, there has been a significant increase in seismicity of events associated with fluid movements and fracturing of rock located in the active crater. SO2 emissions continue at high levels. According to the diagnosis made so far, INGEOMINAS expects an eruption in the coming weeks, but smaller in size than those in November 1985 and September 1989. –Volcano Discovery

They just keep erupting. Imagine when it really gets active! Think of all those gases they put out. I can see where volcanic emisssions could play a part in killing off a third of about anything. With sulphuric acid, sulphur, etc, that's some nasty stuff going into the air.

Small, short explosion rocks Cleveland Volcano in Aleutians
Posted on April 5, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
April 5, 2012 – ALASKA – The Alaska Volcano Observatory says a small explosion at Cleveland Volcano in the Aleutian Islands may have sent up a small ash cloud. Clouds prevented satellite observation of an ash cloud. The observatory says the explosion at 1:12 p.m. Wednesday was of short duration and similar to small events in December. Those explosions created ash clouds that dissipated quickly and did not affect air traffic. Cleveland Volcano is a 5,675-foot peak on an uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. Scientists detected the explosion on distant infrasound seismic networks. Infrasound refers to frequencies below what can be heard by the human ear. Scientists say that if a larger explosion occurs that sends ash more than 20,000 feet high, the eruption should be detected by seismic, infrasound or lightning networks. –News Tribune

What’s melting so many glaciers in Antarctica? Searching for hidden volcanoes under the ice

http://theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/whats-melting-so-many-glaciers-in-antarctica-searching-for-hidden-volcanoes-under-the-ice/

April 7, 2012 – ANTARTICA - Mount Sidley, the highest volcano in Antarctica, may have a lot of company lurking out of sight. Scientists are using seismographs to hunt for hidden volcanoes in Antarctica. Scientists have used radar and other imaging technology to uncover some astounding finds under the East Antarctic Ice Sheet: A vast mountain range that rivals the Alps, and Lake Vostok, one of Earth’s largest lakes. Finally, seismographs can reveal hidden sources of seismic activity — little earthquakes that could be the signatures of active volcanoes hidden under the ice. “It’s really the first time we’re able to look at the interior structure of the mantle,” said Andrew Lloyd, a WSLU Ph.D. student who traveled hundreds of miles by snowmobile to help retrieve some of the seismographs — and the reams of data they recorded. “It will enable us to say something really definitive about the tectonics and geology of the region, which is something nobody has been able to do before,” Lloyd said. Wiens said that the data are already revealing a tantalizing picture of what is going on beneath West Antarctica, a place that is, in the words of one scientist, “hemorrhaging ice. We do see these big variations in the temperature in the mantle across parts of Antarctica that will have a big effect on the ice sheet,” Wiens said. However, he added, many months of work lie ahead, and it will be some time before scientists are ready to announce to the world what lies beneath the ice. –Live Science

Aleutian Island’s Cleveland volcano continues to erupt
Posted on April 7, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
April 7, 2012 – FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Alaska’s Cleveland volcano in the Aleutian Islands is continuing to erupt. The Alaska Volcano Observatory said Friday that low-level eruptions continue to occur inside the volcano located on a remote, uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. The volcano’s lava dome in the summit crater was destroyed during a short explosive eruption on Wednesday. The resulting ash cloud reached about 15,000 feet above sea level. It was the third lava dome that has been destroyed by explosive events since the eruptions began in July 2011. -FDM

Anak Krakatau Volcano – Small Eruptions – 7th April 2012

On the morning of the 7th April 2012 Anak Krakatau started to produce small eruptions from the southern part of the crater. The eruption clouds only reached a height of 100-150meters and only contained small amounts of ash and only a little rockfall, the eruptions was not of a explosive character. The rest of the crater and its fumaroles are producing a continuous white cloud of steam/gas, rising to greater heights than the eruption clouds from the southern part of the crater. Additionally the southern/southwestern part of the outer part of the crater does now have fumaroles, indicating that magma is trapped under this part of the cone. -Youtube

Increase in activity reported at Ecuador’s Tungurahua volcano
Posted on April 9, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
April 9, 2012 – ECUADOR - A new increase in the seismic activity of Tungurahua Volcano, in Ecuador, began early Monday with a constant sign of high energy tremor linked with ash emissions. According to the report of the Geophysics Institute of the National Polytechnic School, the increase of the seismic activity in this crater started with a column of smoke that reached 3 kilometers high along with low intensity roaring and sounds. The first explosions caused minor thunders or crashes due to the rolling of blocks through the side walls of the volcano. Shortly after, the falling of black and fine ashes on populations in the south-southwest regions, such as Palitahua, Capil, and Toctes, was reported. According to the last report, the area surrounding the volcano remains highly cloudy, and with seismic activity. –Prensa Latina

Turrialba Volcano Increases Activity

Thursday morning the Turrialbla volcano unleashed a new series of eruptions, with experts converging on the colossus to take a close look at the smoke emanations coming from its centre.

According to the Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN) and the Observatorio Vulcanologio y Sismologico de Costa Rica (OVISCORI) the activity does not present any danger, but will continue to monitor the volcano much closer.

The alert followed reports by area residents of hearing a large rumble and then the sighting of dark coloured smoke, produced by gas fumes from the volcano.

Last January the volcano became a concern for residents and experts following the emanation of white gas fumes.

Several RSN experts are on their way to the top of the volcano and the OVISCORI is keeping the national park closed and under a green alert.

Mexico's Popocatépetl sleeping volcano awakens

By Dudley Althaus

Updated 09:53 p.m., Sunday, April 15, 2012

MEXICO CITY - Popocatépetl, the nearly 18,000 foot volcano that hovers like a sentinel on the southeastern fringe of Mexico's capital, awakened again Sunday, punctuating an especially shaky seismic season.

Popo, as the mountain is widely called, spewed at least seven exhalations overnight Saturday and through the day Sunday, sending vapor, smoke and gas billowing into the clear sky. The most serious occurred just after 9 a.m. Sunday, sending a vapor cloud a mile into the air.

Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center issued a precautionary warning to residents, advising them to stay alert for a worsening situation and to keep at least seven miles away from the volcano's crater.

Sangay volcano (Ecuador), activity update: growing lava dome, lava flows and ash explosions

Tuesday Apr 17, 2012 02:30 AM | Age: 14 hrs

During an overflight on 13 April, an explosion from Sangay volcano was observed at 08:25 local time. It generated an ash and steam column of 2 km above the summit crater.

A new vent was detected, both on visible and thermal images, located next to the active dome on the SE flank (Ñuñurqu). The activity in this area has intensified since October, when the last aerial survey had taken place.

Extensive lava flows are descending on the SE flank of the dome and reaching the base of the cone.

Strong fumarolic activity was seen on the SE flank of the dome and on the S flank of the central crater.

Russian Volcano Spews Ash to 9,500 Meters

Russia's northernmost active volcano is churning out ash to a height of 9,500 meters (over 31,000 feet) in the country's Far East, local scientists reported on Tuesday.

The 3,283-meter (10,771-foot) Shiveluch volcano increased activity in May 2009 and has been periodically spewing ash from three to ten kilometers.

“A powerful eruption of ashes took place 05.59 a.m. local time [17:59 GMT on Monday], a source at the Far Eastern Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The official said the column of ashes could be clearly seen from a distance of 40 kilometers spreading to the east.

“It is the most powerful eruption this year,” the expert said.

Santorini's underwater volcano activity resumes

(AGI) Washington - Santorini's volcanic basin is showing signs of resumed volcanic activity. According to researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, satellite research tools suggest that a build-up of some 14m cubic metres of lava at a depth of 5km took place between September and January last.
Widely touted by academics as the cause of the Minoan civilisation's obliteration, what is left of the volcano - a small archipelago - last witnessed significant geological activity in January of 2011. Having published his findings in the latest issue of Geophysical Research Letters, the Institute's Andrew Newman says "our research shows that the lava build-up is accelerating," suggesting that even though the build-up may not indicate an imminent eruption, it may cause minor volcanic events, including ash fall-out, landslides and even tsunami type phenomena. . .

http://www.setyoufreenews.com/2012/03/27/increased-volcano-activity-popocatepetl-batu-tara-tungurahua-santiaguito-volcan-de-fuego-lamington/

3/27/12

Volcanoes around the world are showing an increase in activity again. Here is the overview of last 24 – 48 hours of recorded activity, indepth analisys will be made after all reports come in. 6 volcano updates since March 25.

Popocatepétl volcano (Mexico): signs of increasing activity

Popocatepétl volcano in Mexico has been showing signs of increased activity. During 24-25 March, the volcano had 33 small steam and gas emissions, accompanied by small earthquakes and volcanic tremor. On Saturday night, incandescence was observed at the crater.

Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America’s 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 400 x 600 m wide crater.

Batu Tara volcano (Indonesia): larger ash eruption

Volcano Batu Tara in the Sunda Sea off the island of Flores in Indonesia had a larger than usual ash eruption on March 26, which triggered an alert of the VAAC Darwin, who raised the aviation color code to “orange”, as the drifting ash cloud is be a hazard to local air traffic.

Batu Tara is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia and is characterized, similar to Stromboli volcano, by semi-permanent explosive summit activity.

Until 2006, the only confirmed historical eruption from Batu Tara were during 1847-52, which produced explosions with volcanic bombs and a lava flow. On July 1st, 2006, Batu Tara was observed erupting again.

An ash plume rose to 5000 ft (ca 2 km). Since then, it has been erupting frequently. Most eruptions were strombolian or vulcanian type, with explosions producing ash plumes of 1-2 km, similar to Anak Krakatau’s activity.

In March 2007, a phase of stronger eruptions promted the evacuation of 15000 people from Lembata Island nearby.

Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador): constant ash emissions and ash fall

Eruptive column above Tungurahua volcano reaching about 2 km height and heading towards the northeast was reported on March 26.

Tungurahua volcano’s activity has been increasing, Ecuador’s Instituto Geofísico reports. Throughout the morning of March 26, a constant column of steam and ash was rising from the summit crater, reaching up to 3 km height and drifting towards the northeast, where ash fall occurred.

Ash fall was significant in the San Francisco and Black River areas, and mild in Baños, the Ventanas en Runtún, Juive, Pondoa, Puntzán and Cusúa sectors.

Occasional roaring explosion sounds were heard from small to moderate explosive events. Seismic activity remains characterized by volcanic tremor episodes lasting several minutes, interspersed with tremor bursts and long-period events, which are related to fluid movements within the volcano.

Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala): increased activity

Guatemalan volcano Santiaguito increased activity. The authorities on March 26th took all the necessary precautions with the surrounding air traffic. The dispersion of ash in various directions and changes in wind pattern led to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) to warn about the civil aviation.

An Insivumeh report that Santiaguito volcano recorded 33 explosions in 24 hours, with a range of up to 800 meters above the crater, leaving ashes scattered in the southwest and southeast.

Santiaguito volcano is located in Quetzaltenango district, and its height is 2,550 meters above sea level.

The massive dacitic Santiaguito lava-dome complex has been growing at the base of the 1902 crater since 1922. Compound dome growth at Santiaguito has occurred episodically from four westward-younging vents, the most recent of which is Caliente. Dome growth has been accompanied by almost continuous minor explosions, with periodic lava extrusion, larger explosions, pyroclastic flows, and lahars.

Fuego (Guatemala): increased activity

Guatemalan volcano Fuego also increased activity. Authorities took all the necessary precautions with the surrounding air traffic. The Insivumeh reported white and blue plume up to 100 meters above the crater, with displacement to the southwest, in the case of Fuego volcano, whose height is 3,763 meters above sea level and is located between the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla (center south).

Volcano Fuego is one of Central America’s most active volcanoes. It’s one of three large stratovolcanoes overlooking Guatemala’s former capital, Antigua. The scarp of an older edifice, Meseta, lies between 3763-m-high Fuego and its twin volcano to the north, Acatenango.

Lamington (Papua New Guinea): smoke and ash emission

Local community of Popendetta reported smoke and ash emission on March 25. No official reports have come in yet. Lamington is an andesitic stratovolcano with a 1.3-km-wide breached summit crater containing a lava dome.

After a long quiescent period, the volcano sprang suddenly to life in 1951, producing a powerful explosive eruption during which devastating pyroclastic flows and surges swept all sides of the volcano, killing nearly 3000 persons. The eruption concluded with growth of a 560-m-high lava dome in the summit crater.

Some reports of 1951 eruption say that not enough percautions were taken and it led to many casualties.

Popocatepetl Volcano Threatening to Erupt, 19 Million Prepare to Evacuate

The Popocatepetl volcano is making movement and threatening to erupt, causing Mexican officials to raise the alert level from yellow phase three to yellow phase two.

The volcano has already begun spewing red-hot bits of rock, and its opening has expanded. These are signs that the volcano, still quite active, could soon erupt. In a statement by Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention, the volcano could produce "moderate exhalations, some with ash, sporadic low to moderate explosions with likely burning fragments, and flaming magma within the crater."

Residents and tourists have been advised to remain at least seven miles away from the volcano's base, lest magma or hot rock injure anyone. Mexico has been experiencing natural disasters with increasing frequency.

On Friday, officials at the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.4 magnitude earthquake six miles off Mexico's Pacific Coast. It was powerful enough to shake buildings 230 miles away in Mexico City. Thankfully no one was hurt in that earthquake, and the country was left relatively unscathed.

Will Mexico City be the first city to take an opening shot from the end times? Could be, God knows.

Mexico volcano spews glowing rock, tower of ash

HUEJOTZINGO, Mexico (AP) — The Popocatepetl volcano shot a heavy plume of ash into the sky southeast of Mexico's capital and spewed glowing rock from its crater at dawn on Friday.

Webcam images on the site of the National Disaster Prevention Center showed the plume rising from the top of the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) peak at dawn, though clouds obscured the volcano for people further away. The Televisa television network broadcast images of red, glowing material rising from the crater and falling on its slopes.

Authorities this week raised the alert level due to increasing activity at the volcano, whose most violent eruption in 1,200 years occurred on Dec. 18, 2000.

The coordinator general for civil protection, Laura Gurza, told Televisa that officials were not yet ready to order any evacuations, but urged people living near the mountain to be "very, very attentive" to action at the volcano, which is about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from Mexico City. She also urged them to gather important papers and to have their escape routes planned in case they have to leave.

The ash was blowing to the northeast, in the general direction of the city of Puebla.

Residents of Huejotzingo, 18 miles (30 kilometers) from the peak, went about the day as normal despite a magnificent plume of ash and water vapor. Luz Maria de Olate, 35, put her 5-year-old in a surgical mask because the teachers said the ash could damage children's lungs.

But like hundreds of other residents on the flank of the volcano, she doesn't fear an eruption. Neither did her son as they headed for school.

"I'm not afraid. He's my uncle," said Oscar Olate, expressing the personal relationship many in the Mexico Valley feel toward Popocatepetl, whose name means "smoking mountain" in the indigenous Nahuatl language of the Aztecs.

People view it with fondness, said street vender David Gorzo Navarro, 45.

"When the ash falls, it's like fertilizer," he said.

More than 30 million people live within view of the volcano, which sits at a point where the states of Mexico, Puebla, and Morelos come together. It has been erupting intermittently since December 1994.

President Felipe Calderon said Mexicans are living in complicated times, given the 2009 swine flu outbreak and floods and drought this year.

"All we're missing is an eruption of Popocatepetl and we'll complete the picture," he said in a speech late Thursday. "Hopefully not," he added, knocking on wood.

Colombia prepares for imminent volcano eruption

Colombia's government has called for high risk areas to be prepared for the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

The Interior Ministry has ordered the fire departments of 19 municipalities in the central Caldas and Tolima departments to be on high alert after the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) announced that an eruption is "probable" in the coming days or weeks.

The alert level was raised from yellow to orange in March as the volcano became increasingly active. Last week a column of gas and steam approximately 1,200 meters tall extended from its crater.

The national director of the firefighting system warned that there is urgent need for a special contingency plan that outlines tactics to be used in emergency volcanic situations, especially for search and rescue groups. He called for a focus on high risk areas in or near the paths of rivers that originate in the Ruiz, whose levels may be elevated by pyroclastic fragments and the melting of ice.

The director of the Colombian Fire Department Federation in the town of Riosucio explained that local firemen are preparing a plan and educating communities.

In 1985 The Nevado del Ruiz erupted, wiping out the town of Armero and killing 25,000 people.

Villages rocked by volcano eruption

(UKPA) – 16 hours ago

A 17,886ft volcano outside Mexico City has exhaled dozens of towering plumes of ash and shot fragments of glowing rock down its slopes, frightening the residents of surrounding villages with hours of low-pitched roaring not heard in a decade.

A white cloud of ash, gas, water vapour and superheated rock spewed from the cone of Popocatepetl high above the village of Xalitzintla, whose residents said they were awakened by a window-rattling series of eruptions.

Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Centre said that a string of eruptions had ended in the early morning, then started up again at 5.05am, with at least 12 in two hours.

"Up on the mountain, it feels incredible," said Aaron Sanchez Ocelotl, 45, who was in his turf grass fields when the eruptions happened. "It sounds like the roaring of the sea."

Taupo super-eruption secrets revealed

4/21/12
One of the most intriguing unsolved cases for New Zealand geologists is the ancient Taupo super-eruption.

Victoria University PhD student Aidan Allan has found new evidence that explains how and why the volcano blew.

While the general public is fascinated by the magnitude – the event buried the North Island in debris, with the ash cloud all the way to the Chathams – geologists' interest lies elsewhere.

They are intrigued because the eruption's cause isn't open-and-shut – while most super-volcanoes simply explode, with Taupo there was a short hiatus just as things got underway.

"There were breaks of weeks to months [in the early stages] and then all hell breaks loose," Mr Allan said.

As geologists worldwide have to make the life-or-death call as to when an eruption has ended, it's crucial to know why this super-volcano acted the way it did.

The event began in standard fashion, at least in super-volcano terms, with a massive 530sq km pool of magma building up below the surface, under more and more pressure.

But deposits show that after the very first lava flowed from the caldera pool, the eruption paused for several months.

There are the markings between lava deposits left by rainfall and insect life, evidence that can't be ignored.

Explaining why that happened is the ultimate cold case – happening 27,000 years ago, rocks and soil are all that's left to tell the tale.

But of all the world's super-eruptions, the one that made Lake Taupo is the youngest, and so the evidence is the best preserved – and what was found might change the way we think about the beginning and ending of eruptions.

Being on the Pacific Ring of Fire meant the impending super-volcano was not alone.

Fifteen kilometres north of where the town of Taupo sits today were separate, much smaller subsurface magma pools, named the Northeast Dome System.

These northeast pools were very different to the massive caldera at Taupo. They weren't under a lot of pressure and lava regularly seeped out volcanic domes.

Even the magma was different, it had some chemicals and trace elements that the Taupo caldera magma did not.

Mr Allan describes the two types of magma as having their own chemical fingerprint – this was the basis for the break in the case.

Looking at the layers of volcanic pumice that were laid down in the early stages of the super-eruption, he saw the fingerprint of the northeast magma over and over again.

"We know that the magma grew beneath [the northeast] system, but we can see the magma's actually erupted from what is now Lake Taupo."

As the two pools of magma were physically separated by 15km of rock, Mr Allan suspected a major tectonic force had shifted the magma from the northeast site to the vents of the Taupo super-volcano.

With layer upon layer of chemical evidence confirming the presence of two types of magma, it seems he'd found a potential suspect for the mysterious halting of the super-eruption.

Tungurahua Erupts Launching Gravel to Nearby Town

4/23/12

Over the weekend, the Tungurahua’s volcanic eruption had a strong explosion that caused gravel to fall down in the nearby town of Pillate, Ecuador.

The explosion, characterized by its loud “cannon ball shot”, was immediately detected by locals and scientists observing the volcano’s progress. The explosion was later followed by a slight tremor and a constant pulsation of “high energy” said reports.

The constant cloud coverage surrounding the volcano has caused scientists, from the Geophysical Institute branch of the National Polytechnic School to have trouble determining its current state. Most of the direct observations are conducted in the Guadalupe Observatory, the closest in the vicinity.

Tungurahua, located in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador, is 5,016 meters high and its eruptions began in 1999. Since then, the volcano has transitioned from times of high activity and those of calm.

However, Tungurahua is not the only volcano causing extreme damage and concern in the Hispanic world. Popocatépetl, located in Mexico City, has also been under close watch due to its recent activity which included ash blasts.

http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2012/04/24/n-sulawesi-volcano-erupts.html

4/24/12

North Sulawesi’s Mount Lokon erupted at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, after several days of increased activity, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has announced.

The height at which lava shot out of the volcano was unknown because clouds were blocking the full view.

The agency declared areas within a 2.5 kilometers radius from the mountain’s peak dangerous and urged nearby residents to stay alert.

There are no residential areas within that zone.

However, the agency said that the residents living outside the zone do not need to evacuate yet.

“There might be other eruptions. We call on the residents to stay calm,” agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post.

Sutopo added that officers from the agency had been deployed to the area to assist local authorities.

Residents evacuated over eruption fears

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Tue, 04/24/2012 7:31 AM

Local residents around Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, have been asked to evacuate the area, following the mountain’s steady increase of activity since 4 p.m. Monday.

"We are on alert status [Level 3]," National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Monday.

"We ask that local disaster mitigation agencies follow the technical recommendations we have given them. There should be no community activity within a 2.5 kilometer radius of the volcano’s crater.”

Mt Lokon is located on the outskirts of Tomohon. It is 1,580 meters high and is located 20 kilometers west from Manado, North Sulawesi.

According to the Volcanic and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG), Mt Lokon last erupted on June 14, 2011, sending ash and debris 1,500 meters into the sky.

The following day, another eruption threw volcanic material 600 meters into the air. Two residents died as a result of the eruptions.

Other eruptions occurred in 1991 and 2001, with the earlier one causing Rp 1 billion (US$108,000) in damage, as well as the death of Swiss tourist Vivian Clavel.

The 2001 eruption covered Manado in ash and debris. The dust coming from the mountain formed a 400 meter plume. (png)

Etna's fingers of fire: Europe's most active volcano sends molten lava streaming menacingly down its mountainside
Fourth eruption of 11,000ft volcano in last month alone

4/24/12

Etna, erupted for the seventh - and without doubt the most spectacular - time this year today, spewing forth molten lava hundreds of metres into the air.

Residents living close by were covered in hot ash but Europe's tallest and most active volcano didn't seem to pose any threat to human safety.
Local inhabitants of the Sicilian town of Catania were grateful that Etna at least didn't close the local airport as it did last month, preventing a visiting Serie A football team from leaving the island.

Mexican volcano keeps locals awake
2012-04-24 12:02

Xalitzintla - Residents at the foot of Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano no longer sleep soundly since the towering mountain roared back into action over a week ago, spewing out a hail of rocks, steam and ash.

"We close our eyes, but we don't sleep much. In the past, there was only smoke but this time it's stronger," said Francisco Jimenez, who lives in the nearby town of Xalitzintla in central Mexico, 55km from Mexico City.

The volcano, Mexico's second highest peak at 5 452m, started rumbling and spurting high clouds of ash and steam on 13 April, provoking the authorities to raise the alert to level five on a seven-point scale.

The alert extended a security cordon around the volcano but stopped short of starting evacuations of about 685 000 residents from nearby communities.

Over the weekend, residents watched as Popocatepetl, which means "smoking mountain" in the indigenous Nahuatl language, lived up to its name, spouting glowing rocks and shaking the ground beneath their feet.
