Volcano erupts with smoke on Sumatra

Updated: 08:01, Thursday September 27, 2012

A volcano has erupted on Indonesia's Sumatra island, spewing thick grey smoke up to 1.5 kilometres into the sky.

Monitoring official Suparno says Mount Marapi's eruption on Wednesday is its strongest since August last year, when its status was raised to level three out of four.

Suparno, who uses one name, says there is no plan for an evacuation because the nearest villages are far beyond the danger zone of three kilometres from the crater.

Marapi is among about 129 active volcanos in Indonesia, which is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Its last major eruption in 1992 killed a climber and injured several others, including two American tourists.

Mount Lokon spews ash clouds in seventh eruption since Sept

10/8/12

ONE of Indonesia's most active volcanoes has erupted again, spewing clouds of ash, an official has said.
The 1580 metre (5,214 feet) Mount Lokon on northeast Sulawesi island erupted at 2pm local time on Sunday with thunderous sounds heard as far as five kilometres away.

"Lokon has been quite active the past few months. This was the seventh biggest eruption since mid-September," government vulcanologist Farid Bina told AFP from the volcano's monitoring post in North Sulawesi province.

"It produced a loud sound like thunder. But we cannot detect the height of the eruption as thick clouds covered its peak," he said, adding that muddy rains fell in surrounding areas.

Klyuchevskoy volcano starts erupting in Kamchatka

The Klyuchevskoy volcano, the highest active volcano in Eurasia, has started erupting in Kamchatka, in the Russian Far East.
The luminescence over the volcano summit is evidence that glowing lava is flowing in the crater.

The volcano may start blowing out ash any moment now.

The Level of Concern Colour Code has been raised to Yellow, which is a potential danger warning for aircraft. The giant volcano last erupted from September 2009 to December 2010, and it began to again wake up in June this year. Klyuchevskoy volcano is 4,750 metres above sea.

Volcanic activity world-wide

7 October 2012: Etna, El Hierro, Lokon, Popocatépetl, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Brenisteinsfjöll, Yellowstone

Sunday Oct 07, 2012 16:05 PM | Age: 8 days

BY: T

Increased activity took place in the Bocca Nuova crater of Etna volcano during last night, when the tremor steeply rose. It dropped back to normal levels this morning.

It seems a new earthquake swarm has started at El Hierro volcano yesterday, when the number of quakes rose from an average of about 8-10 to 23 quakes per day. Today, so far there have been 14 events recorded, and their number is likely to rise further. The quakes are very small (mostly under M1, largest M2.0) and are concentrated at about 10 km depth in the western El Golfo and scattered in the SW part of the island at greater depths.

Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi had another explosion this afternoon, which was heard in up to 6 km distance.

Popocatépetl has not changed much. A strong SO2 plume was again visible on yesterday's NOAA satellite image.

Batu Tara produced new explosions with ash at 8,000 ft (2.4 km) altitude.

Sakurajima volcano in Japan remains relatively active. 4 explosions of moderate size occurred yesterday 6 Oct (GMT time). Ash plumes rose to 2.7-3 km altitude 9-10,000 ft).

A new earthquake swarm occurred over the weekend on the Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, on the volcanic rift zone about 12 km SW of Brenisteinsfjöll volcano. The largest quakes was a M3.8 event at 5 km depth on Friday at 19:42 UTC.

A minor seismic swarm occurred at Yellowstone, but falls into what is normal activity at a large active caldera.

VIDEO: Kilauea Volcano lava lake reaches highest level

October 17, 2012

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii: Kilauea Volcano has been putting on quite a show lately… as the lava lake within the Halemaumau Crater has reached its highest level since the summit eruption began in 2008.

The lava lake at Kīlauea’s summit was only about 150 feet below the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater on Sunday — the highest it has reached, according to the scientists of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

For the past several months, lava within the summit vent has been slowly rising. As of October 5, 2012, lava reached a level that covered the previous high-lava “bathtub” ring within the vent.

It was around this time that the bangs and booms of the volcano began to be heard as far away as the Jaggar Museum Overlook in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, thrilling crowds day and night.

This video shows the heat from the high lava lake level in the overlook vent, causing the walls of the vent above the lava surface to expand and fracture.

Scientists say this is the source of the cracking and booming noises emanating from the vent in recent days.

Here, we see small fragments of rock exploding from the wall and scattering onto the lake surface.

The HVO says the rise in lava level within the vent is associated with a modest uplift and expansion of Kilauea’s summit area. The root cause for this expansion isn’t clear. Scientists don’t believe there’s an increase in magma supply from below. They do believe there could be a connection in the volcanic plumbing system between the summit magma reservoir and the active Pu`u `O`o eruptive vent on Kilauea’s east rift zone.

On at least three occasions between March and September 2011, the level of the lava lake within the summit vent was unusually elevated. This condition caused increased pressure within the east rift plumbing system, resulting in notable eruptive outbreaks: the short-lived Kamoamoa fissure eruption just uprift of Pu`u `O`o and two subsequent events in which Pu`u `O`o was split open along its flanks.

This time, however, it appears that the associated high summit pressure has not significantly transmitted down the volcano’s east rift. The lava level within Pu`u `O`o crater, while elevated, is not extraordinarily so. And even though lava is flowing through a tube near the base of the Pu`u `O`o cone, flows haven’t reached the ocean in nearly a year.

According to the HVO, a steady decrease in Kilauea’s east rift zone gas emissions since August 2012 also suggests a decrease in magma flow between the summit and east rift zone.

Scientists say one possible outcome of continued summit expansion and lava level rise could be an eventual outpouring of lava on the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater. Alternatively, the increased pressure might overcome the apparent constriction, resulting in an outbreak somewhere between the summit and Pu`u `O`o, akin to the March 2011 Kamoamoa fissure eruption.

Only time will tell what happens next. For now, the show – and the symphony of bangs and booms – at Kilauea’s summit continue on.

Wow, the lava isn't making it to the ocean any more? It was flowing into the ocean for years, even while I was there back in the late 80's. It's definitely changing.

Volcanism in the American Southwest
Released: 10/19/2012 1:30:00 PM

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Experts in volcano hazards and public safety have started a conversation about volcanoes in the southwestern United States, and how best to prepare for future activity. Prior to this meeting, emergency response planning for volcanic unrest in the region had received little attention by federal or state agencies.

Though volcanic eruptions are comparatively rare in the American Southwest, the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah host geologically-recent volcanic eruption deposits and are vulnerable to future volcanic activity. Compared with other parts of the western U.S., comparatively little research has been focused on this area, and eruption probabilities are poorly understood.

“A volcanic eruption in the American southwest is an example of a low-probability, but high-impact event for which we should be prepared to respond,” said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. “No one wants to be exchanging business cards during an emergency, and thus a small investment in advance planning could pay off in personal relationships and coordination between scientists and first responders.”

"The goal of the conference is to increase awareness of volcanism and vulnerabilities in the American Southwest, and to begin coordination among volcano scientists, land managers, and emergency responders regarding future volcanic activity," said Dr. Jacob Lowenstern, one of the organizers of the conference, and the U.S. Geological Survey Scientist-In-Charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. "This is the first time these federal, state, and local agencies have met to discuss their roles, responsibilities, and resources, should an eruption occur."

The "Volcanism in the American Southwest" conference on Oct. 18-19 in Flagstaff, Ariz. was organized by the USGS, Northern Arizona University, University at Buffalo, and New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, the meeting included interdisciplinary talks, posters, and panel discussions, providing an opportunity for volcanologists, land managers, and emergency responders to meet, converse, and begin to plan protocols for any future volcanic activity.

Earthquake activity update on 20.10.2012 at 14:51 UTC
Posted on October 20, 2012 by Jón Frímann
Today (20.10.2012) has been busy in terms of earthquake activity in Iceland. So I am expecting to write a second update later today on this activity.

Hekla volcano

At 05:28 UTC there was an earthquake in Hekla volcano. This earthquake had the magnitude of ML1.1 with the depth of 0.6 km. No other earthquakes have followed this single earthquake. What this means is impossible to know at this time. But so far everything remains quiet in Hekla volcano.

Earthquake in Hekla volcano. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Kverkfjöll volcano

Earthquake activity continues in Kverkfjöll volcano. This earthquake activity is the result of dike intrusion into Kverkfjöll volcano. So far this earthquake activity is taking place in short burst of earthquake swarm.

Earthquake activity in Kverkfjöll volcano. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Tjörnes Fracture Zone

At 02:07 UTC earthquake activity did start in TFZ. Just off the coast of Iceland. This earthquake activity is taking place in area that last had earthquake swarm in September. I did cover that earthquake activity in details on this blog. So far the largest earthquakes in this area of TFZ have had the magnitude of ML2.9. This is purely tectonic earthquake activity.

Earthquake activity in TFZ. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Meteorological Office.

It is difficult to know what happens next in TFZ earthquake activity. But it likely going to continue for the next few hours to days like earlier. It is best to keep an eye on this earthquake activity. This earthquake activity also sometimes stops for few hours before it continues again. Most of this earthquake activity can be seen on my geophone network web page.

If anything major happens in this earthquake activity. I am going to post new blog post with updated information on that activity.

Volcanic Activities Increase on Mount Raung
Monday, 29 October, 2012 | 18:24 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Banyuwangi:Volcanic activities on Mount Raung, located on the border of Banyuwangi and Jember, continued to rise on Monday.

Hendra Gunawan, from the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center’s (PVMBG) said that since 10 a.m. tremors have been increasing in the region with the length of more than 32 millimeters. “It’s an over-scale earthquake,” Hendra told reporters on Monday, October 29.

In addition to the increasing tremors, the PVMBG has also received reports from Mount Ijen monitoring office, which reported black smoke spewing out of Mount Raung reaching up to 100 meters high.

However, Hendra has urged residents not to panic and wait for announcements of further monitoring from the PVMBG. “But we must remain vigilant,” said Hendra.

New Zealand volcano on verge of eruption: volcanologists

11/16/12

WELLINGTON, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand volcanologists warned Friday that the central North Island mountain of Ruapehu was showing signs of an imminent eruption.

The government's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences ( GNS Science) said the temperature beneath Ruapehu's Crater Lake was about 800 degrees centigrade, but the lake itself was only 20 degrees centigrade, which suggested a vent was partly blocked.

That could lead to a pressure build-up beneath the Crater Lake, indicating a heightened likelihood of eruptions over the coming weeks to months.

"We think the pressure beneath Ruapehu Crater Lake has increased and this makes an eruption more likely over the next weeks to months," GNS Science duty volcanologist Steve Sherburn said in a statement.

A build-up of pressure beneath the Crater Lake was thought to have caused the last eruption in 2007 and a smaller eruption in 2006.

Since late October, small earthquakes had been occurring about 5 km beneath the summit area of Ruapehu, a popular winter skiing ground, but these might not be directly related to the high temperatures beneath the Crater lake as they were much deeper.

As a result, GNS Science had increased the aviation color code warning for aircraft from green to yellow, which reflected a change from a normal non-eruptive state to showing elevated signs of unrest.

However, the volcanic alert level remained at 1 on the scale of 0 to 5, indicating initial signs of possible volcano unrest.

In August, two other New Zealand volcanoes erupted, but no damage or casualties were reported.

Mount Tongariro, also in the central North Island, erupted on Aug. 6, throwing out small amounts of ash in its first eruption since 1897.

Two days later, White Island, a marine volcano about 50 km off the east of the North Island, erupted, sending up an ash plume 200 to 300 meters in the air, in its first eruption since 2001.

'Mount Doom' Likely to Blow Soon

11/19/12

Mount Ruapehu, a New Zealand volcano that stood in for Mount Doom in the "Lord of the Rings" movies, seems to be heading for an eruption.

New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) has warned hikers to keep off the summit, saying that recent temperature readings of the volcano indicate an increased likelihood of an eruption in the coming weeks.

The crater of Mount Ruapehu is usually filled with a snow-melt lake, and a peculiar temperature difference between the lake and the ground beneath it has led scientists to issue the warning.

"We think that the temperature a few hundred meters beneath Crater Lake is about 800 Celsius [1,472 degrees Fahrenheit], but the lake itself is only about 20 C [68 F]," said volcanologist Steven Sherburn, in an alert bulletin released by GNS Science, a New Zealand geologic hazard monitoring organization. "This suggests the vent is partly blocked, which may be leading to a pressure buildup beneath Crater Lake." [10 Biggest Volcano Eruptions in History]

The pressure could give way in the form of an eruption, minor or major.

"Sooner or later that situation will be rectified, either in a small, relatively passive way, or with a significant eruption," DOC volcanic risk manager Harry Keys told Radio New Zealand.

Ruapehu, New Zealand's largest active volcano, last erupted in 2007, propelling a large rock onto the leg of a nearby climber who recovered after having his leg amputated. Historically, it has had major eruptions every 20 to 50 years, according to DOC, with the last big ones coming in 1995 and 1996.

The volcano shared the role of Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, but Ruapehu might be thought of as more of a stunt double than a featured player. Long shots of Mount Doom in the films showed nearby Mount Ngauruhoe, while scenes that supposedly took place on the slopes of Mount Doom were filmed on Ruapehu.

Mount Ngauruhoe, also an active volcano, last erupted in 1975. Mount Doom last erupted at the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth.

Mount Tongariro erupts

Mount Tongariro has erupted, GNS Science reports.

The eruption came from Te Maari Crater, on the western side of the mountain, shortly before 1.30pm.

A massive plume of ash could be seen coming from the mountain.

GNS Science duty volcanologist Nico Fournier told APNZ the eruption happened about 1.20pm.

"There was one eruption, essentially one explosion, and it was not sustained. It spewed some ash possibly a couple of kilometres up the air. The ash is now drifting to the east-southeast.''

Adrift NZ, which runs tours of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, had around 50 people on the mountain today.

Operator Stewart Barclay, who chairs a group of 30 users of Mt Tongariro, was heading to Mt Tongariro to help his guides and their groups off the mountain.

"I'm just going to make sure everyone is safe... from my guides perspective and from what I've heard, it seems minor."

Mr Barclay understood the eruption had launched no projectiles into the air.

"I've just talked to one of my guides and he is taking the safe route out. There was a minor amount of panic and everyone is safe now, there were no injuries."

Programme manager of community relations at DOC in Tongariro Kim Alexander-Turia said the crossing has been closed at the Mangatepopo and Ketetahi road ends.

Police were on site to help, she said

She said there are people on the crossing at the moment, but they were due to start returning from 2pm onwards.

"We haven't sent out a search and rescue because it's not a boulder event - just ash and gas at this time."

She said DOC was going to let people come down from the crossing "as they can".

Ms Alexander-Turia said there was a warden stationed at each hut.

DOC was also running a coordinated incident event at the Ruapehu office.

The crossing will be closed until they received the word from GNS, she said.

Dr Fournier said the eruption was not very loud and was smaller than an earlier eruption in August.

Dr Fournier was a few kilometres away when the eruption happened and said while he was safe, he had "a good view of the explosion''.

"It was remarkable a few minutes ago, now it's dying off,'' he said about 20 minutes after the explosion.

"When it happened you had a column of the ash which spewed in the air vertically, and then essentially the source of that eruption just stopped.''

Dr Fournier said there was "quite a bit of gas'' but it was quietening down and the ash was drifting away.

The next step was to work with the Department of Conservation (DoC) and authorities to make sure people in the area were safe.

"That's going to be the top thing, so right now we are actually with DoC and liaising with the authorities just to make sure that everybody is aware that there was an eruption, how big it was and where the ash is going.

"Then the authorities will take it from there, if there is any action to be made.

"But at the moment it's probably much less of a big eruption than it was in early August.''

The Civil Defence said light volcanic ash fall may impact the Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty areas.

People living in or near the affected the areas should stay indoors and close all windows and doors if ash starts falling. If you are caught outside seek shelter, or wear a dust mask, handkerchief or cloth to cover your mouth, and protect your eyes with glasses or goggles.

The Civil Defence has a national advisory in effect.

For more on what to do during an ash fall, see here.

GNS Science has increased the aviation colour code from yellow to red following the eruption. The red status means an eruption "is forecast to be imminent with significant emission of ash into the atmosphere likely".

A police spokesperson said the Desert Road remains open.

Tongariro, in the centre of the North Island, erupted in August for the first time in 115 years, sending ash as far east as Napier.

According to GeoNet, Tongariro is a complex of multiple volcanic cones constructed over a period of 275,000 years.

The mountain's active vents include Te Maari, Emerald, North Crater and Red Crater.

Last week GNS Science increased the likelihood of neighbouring volcano Mt Ruapehu erupting, following increased activity on the mountain.

Volcano activity of November 26, 2012

Mostly changes in volcano-seismicity levels (or, in the case of Masaya volcano, no change) to report today.

Seismicity at Little Sitkin volcano (Aleutians) is up again today. (station LSSA)  Yesterday I mentioned tiny, probably(?) ice quakes occurring on Mount Spurr volcano.  Today, what appear to be low-frequency earthquakes (which can also be generated by ice movement) dot the Mount Spurr seismogram. (station CKT)  To the south, an interesting sequence of shallow, larger (M2-M3) earthquakes has been taking place (since 15 November) near the Four-peaked-Mount Douglas volcano cluster.  Thus some areas to keep an eye on up north.

A small pulse of seismicity occurred beneath the South Moat of Long Valley caldera (CA) overnight.  (station MMX1)

Low-level volcanic tremor and small earthquakes rattle Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico).  The volcano has been emitting bursts of gas and ash at an average rate of one per hour over the past 24 hours.

Study: Massive volcanic eruption in the cards for Japan

12/3/12

Japan should brace for a catastrophic volcanic eruption at some point, say experts, citing a massive buildup of magma at many of the nation's 110 active volcanoes.

The last particularly serious eruption in Japan occurred in 1914, when Mount Sakurajima in southern Kagoshima Prefecture blew its top.

According to study by volcanologists, Japan, which lies on the Pacific Rim of Fire, has been shaken by more than 1,000 volcanic eruptions over the past 2,000 years.

"The possibility of a major eruption in the future is real," said Yoichi Nakamura, a professor of volcanology at Utsunomiya University who has been analyzing volcanic eruptions with a team of researchers.

110 ACTIVE volcanoes? What do they define as active? I realize they have many islands which I'd guess are all volcanoes, but active? That's a lot of active volcanoes.

So they are saying they are having a "massive buildup of magma at many..."?

Quote
According to the study, 1,162 eruptions have occurred in Japan over the past 2,000 years. Of these, 52 were major events that spewed a massive volume of ash and lava over a short period. It amounts to a large-scale eruption occurring every 38 years.

Quote
Of the 1,162 eruptions, the 47 volcanoes consistently monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency represent nearly 90 percent of the activity, or 1,012 of those events.

12/13/12

SAN FRANCISCO — Scientists have discovered one of the world's weirdest volcanoes on the seafloor near the tip of Baja, Mexico.

The petite dome — about 165 feet tall (50 meters) and 4,000 feet long by 1,640 feet wide (1,200 m by 500 m) — lies along the Alarcón Rise, a seafloor-spreading center. Tectonic forces are tearing the Earth's crust apart at the spreading center, creating a long rift where magma oozes toward the surface, cools and forms new ocean crust.

Circling the planet like baseball seams, seafloor-spreading centers (also called midocean ridges) produce copious amounts of basalt, a low-silica content lava rock that makes up the ocean crust. (Silica, or silicon dioxide, is the main component of quartz, one of the most common minerals on Earth.)

Volcano lava flows worry Italian island

AFP - Spectacular lava flows and smoke from an active volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli on Monday sparked fear among inhabitants but geophysicists said the situation was under control.

Stromboli is part of the seven-island Eolian Archipelago just off Sicily in southern Italy.

The volcano is active but on Monday there was a particularly powerful eruption and sustained lava flows following four days of heightened activity.

Stromboli mayor Marco Giorgianni told the island's 500 inhabitants that they were not at risk and experts from Italy's civil protection agency are due on the island for further controls shortly.

"We are afraid," one resident, Pier Paolo Cincotta, was quoted by the ANSA news agency as saying.

"No-one has really explained to us what the situation is and what we should do," he said.

Italy's National Geophysics Institute is monitoring the situation.

Kamchatka and Kuril Island's activity update

Friday Jan 18, 2013 11:19 AM | Age: 7 hrs

BY: VOLCANOBULLETIN

With Kamchatka currently being one of the most volcanically active places on the planet, here is a summary of the current volcanic activity in the past week in the region by the Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team.

Lava dome growth and effusion of a viscous lava flow continue at Shiveluch volcano, accompanied by moderate fumarolic activity and incandescence. Satellite imagery showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano all week.

Eruption's at four cinder cones producing fluid lava flows on the S part of the fissure on the flank of Tolbachik continues. A large thermal anomaly on the N part of the fissure was detected on satellite imagery. Gas and ash plumes from Tolbachik rose to heights of 4 KM a.s.l.

A lava flow continues to extrude on the east flank of Kizimen volcano, accompanied by incandescence, hot avalanches and strong gas and steam activity. Two new lava flows were detected on the SE flank of the volcano by satellite data. A thermal anomaly was also observed.

Possible ash eruptions from Karymsky volcano were detected in the past week with ash plumes possible rising to a height of 2.5 KM a.s.l. A thermal anomaly was detected at the volcano on the 11 and 14 January.

Strombolian activity continues at Kliuchevskoi volcano. This was accompanied by gas and steam activity from the summit and incandescence. Thermal anomalies were detected on 11 and 13 Janaury.

http://www.alaskajournal.com/Alaska-Journal-of-Commerce/February-Issue-2-2013/Dome-grows-in-Alaskas-Cleveland-Volcano/

Feb 7, 2013 - 09:43 AM AKST

Dome grows in Alaska's Cleveland Volcano

DAN JOLING, Associated Press

(AP) — Alaska's Cleveland Volcano is heating up and scientists are on alert in case it sends up an ash cloud that could threaten trans-Pacific flights.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory detected elevated surface temperatures Jan. 24 at Cleveland's summit. Satellite data obtained last week indicated that a growing lava dome on the floor of the summit crater had reached about 328 feet, or 100 meters, in diameter.

The summit crater itself is nearly 10 times that size, said Chris Waythomas of the U.S. Geological Survey.

"It does this from time to time and it's a fairly small lava dome," he said Wednesday. "It's not gigantic."

Lava domes form a lid on a volcano chamber that holds magma. When they grow big enough, lava domes can become unstable and collapse. Decompression of the magma chamber can lead to an explosion as the conduit inside the volcano suddenly becomes unsealed and gasses escape.

The new lava dome led the observatory to change the volcano's alert level to "orange," indicating heightened or escalating unrest. Development of a lava dome indicates sudden explosions of ash higher than 20,000 feet — a threshold for concern for international air carriers — could be produced with little warning.

The volcano in the past has sent ash clouds much higher. Cleveland Volcano's last major eruption was 12 years ago. It began in February 2001 and produced three explosive events that produced ash clouds as high as 39,000 feet.

Cleveland has had burst of smaller plumes nearly every year since then. In December 2011, Cleveland sent up an ash cloud to 15,000 feet that did not disrupt international air carriers. Scientists last detected minor ash emissions in November.

Alaska's Redoubt Volcano blew on Dec. 15, 1989, and sent ash 150 miles away into the path of a KLM jet carrying 231 passengers. Its four engines flamed out and the jet dropped more than 2 miles, from 27,900 feet to 13,300 feet, before the crew was able to restart all engines and land the plane safely at Anchorage.

Cleveland Mountain is a 5,675-foot peak on uninhabited Chuginadak Island about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. The nearest village is tiny Nikolski on another island about 50 miles east. Previous eruptions of Cleveland were not considered a threat to Nikolski's 16 permanent residents.

The observatory is a joint program between the USGS, the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute and the state Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys.

The observatory has no real-time seismic equipment on Cleveland. Pressure sensors on Okmok Volcano —74 miles away— have in the past detected a pressure wave from an explosion, Waythomas said.

"We have a couple people who are watching for that," he said.

Paluweh volcano (Flores, Indonesia): situation on the island remains critical

Thursday Feb 14, 2013 12:34 PM | Age: 5 hrs

BY: T

A report published by the Indonesian Volcanological Survey (VSI) indicates that the intense eruptive phase on 3 Feb caused the collapse of about 1/4 of the volume of the dome, a little more one million cubic meters.

VSI points out that the main hazard zones for pyroclastic flows, if the dome continues to grow, include now also the valleys to the west and south-east, in addition to the open valley to the south (that already was invaded by pyroclastic flows, visible on the recent NASA space image).

The situation on the island remains critical. Many villages are now directly in this danger area (Nitunglea, Rokirole, Tuanggeo, Ona, Wolondopo).

Mount Etna roars to life in new eruption -- and it's all on video

2/19/13

Italy's Mount Etna sent lava and gas shooting toward the stars early this Tuesday morning, the first big eruption for the volcano in 2013.

The famous Sicilian volcano burst to life overnight, sending a fountain of fire into the air. The dramatic scene was captured in a video by Klaus Dorschfeldt, a videographer and webmaster at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, had emitted signs of an imminent paroxysm in recent weeks. On Jan. 22, lava and strong flashes in the volcano's New Southeast Crater were clearly visible from the Sicilian foothills; these often herald a new paroxysm: short, violent eruptive bursts.

Dorschfeldt said he knew Mount Etna's recent signals could precede new activity.  "(I've) followed the activity of Etna for many years, and with time you learn to know it as if it were your friend," he said in an email interview. "Following it constantly (you) learn to be a keen observer and a minor change can lead to something important," he said.

The tallest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna is almost constantly spewing gas or lava. Its Bocca Nuova crater also erupted earlier this year, from Jan. 10 to Jan. 20. In 2011, Etna's violent bursts were spotted from space.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/science/8343757/White-Island-stirs-sends-out-ash-clouds

2/23/13

White Island is stirring again but volcanologists say activity within the crater is only minor.

GNS has monitoring cameras in place at the volcano which take photos of the crater every 15 minutes and scientists noticed an increased level of activity between 11.30am and 1.30pm today.

Duty volcanologist Arthur Jolly said the ash was confined to within the crater and would not affect aviation in the area.

He was unsure as to what the rest of the weekend had to hold.

"In certain volcanic systems you can see an evolution in the pattern and we know from many volcanoes worldwide that some volcanoes follow a pattern that leads to an eruption," Jolly said.

"But in this case, this volcano doesn't follow this kind of set script."

By the end of last month the hot crater lake on White Island completely dried up as explosive rocks, mud and gas were thrown into the air from the active volcano.

The volcano has been spewing a steady stream of gas since activity heated up in December.

It's the most active the volcano has been since 2000.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/9912191/Italy-volcano-Mount-Etna-erupts-2013.html

Roads close to the volcano were covered with volcanic stones and ash after Mount Etna erupted on Tuesday night.
3/6/13

Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano sent plumes of ash and lava into the night sky on the island of Sicily.

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology has recently registered increased explosive activity by the volcano, Italy's Civil Protection agency said.

There are several inhabited villages on the slopes of Mount Etna.

Eruptions are not infrequent, and Italian airliners sometimes have to alter their routes to avoid flying through ash clouds.

Tuesday's eruption did not cause any interruption to air traffic at the airport serving the nearby town of Catania, according to reports.
