Hmm.

Thinking the same thing too - not only this one, but pretty much volcanos have really become active around the world.

I don't think it's a coincidence at all.

Japan’s Sakurajima volcano rocked by another large explosion- damages cars

A moderately large vulcanian explosion occurred this morning, producing significant fallout of lapilli and small bombs in several kilometers distance. Cars parked at the Arimura Lava observatory observation point to the south of the volcano were damages and windshields broken, at a distance of about 4 km. There are no reports of injuries to people. The ash plume from the eruption rose to approx. 12,000 ft (3.6 km) elevation, i.e. about 2.5 km height. In itself, today’s explosion is not even among the largest that have occurred in the past months, but the volcano clearly continues to be in a state of elevated activity when seen on a long-term average. The following webcam time-lapse video shows frequent ash emission and explosions from the volcano. In a recent interview with Radio New Zealand, volcanologist Masato Iguchi mentions that the volcano might be heading for a larger eruption comparable to that of 1914: “The magma level deep within the volcano is back to about 90% of what it was before the 1914 eruption. So we do have to worry about a big eruption in the long term.” –Volcano Discovery

Jebel Zubair volcano erupts in the Red Sea

As of today, the submarine eruption continues with the production of a steam plume of variable size, not always easily identifiable on satellite images. A SO2 plume is also visible on satellite data drifting from the eruption site. No ash can be seen on satellite imagery, only steam, and the area of discolored water (indicator of suspended particles) is small if not has disappeared. That suggests that the eruption is currently rather weak and probably has not yet entered the so-called surtseyan phase where solid fragments (ash, lava blocks) are ejected above the surface of the sea. –Volcano Discovery

'Dante's Peak,' for real: Volcanic eruption creates deadly acid lake

Grandma's death by acid is a highlight of the 1997 camp classic "Dante's Peak." The disaster epic chronicles the race to save a small town from a deadly volcanic eruption.

In the movie, volcanic gases quickly turn a placid lake into an acidic death trap as a family escapes burning-hot lava by boat, aided by a volcanologist played by Pierce Brosnan. Grandma sacrifices herself and jumps into the lake to push their dissolving aluminum boat the last few feet to safety.

For a film that gets some eruption science terrifyingly right, the lake's radical transformation has always been a sticking point. Volcanic gases belching from the lake bottom can't acidify an entire lake in a matter of hours, debunkers have shown. However, extremely acidic fluids could dissolve Grandma's legs and kill her from shock, as well as eat holes in the boat.

Now, it turns out there is also some truth behind the fictional volcanic chemistry.

We're definitely seeing some very weird things in potentially these last days we're living in.

And I thought it was only in those B-rated movies we saw in the 80's and 90's. Shocked

Mount Etna’s explosive erupion causes airport closure

Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world has again started spewing lava from its bowels and sent a huge plume of volcanic ash into the air much akin to the earlier eruptions in 2012. Mount Etna volcano is situated in Sicily and it started to spew volcanic ash on Saturday Morning. There has been no casualties’ according to BBC but Air Traffic at the Catania airport was temporarily halted because of the smoke. The Airport reopened at Dawn. As mentioned, Mt Etna is an active volcano which erupts regularly at short intervals. Situated in Sicily the volcano stands at an imposing 10,922 feet high at its summit and is Europe’s highest and most active volcano. The volcano has been spewing small and sporadic volcanic ash emissions since September. Mount Etna reported the 13th episode of activity in 2013, but the last major eruption was in 1992. The primeval Greeks thought Mount Etna was home to the god of fire, Vulcan. When Mount Etna erupted, they thought that Vulcan was simply forging weapons for Mars, the god of war. Volcanic eruptions are often accompanied by tremors and in Mount Etna’s case also underground tremors were reported on Friday before the eruptions on Saturday. Till now evacuation has not been ordered from the many villages that are present on the volcano slopes. –Pentagon Post

Doomsday volcanoes on the planet are awakening in record numbers: Is a new supervolcano forming in Chile?

GEOLOGY – One of these days, a field of volcanoes you have never heard of will wake up, and if it fulfills its geologic potential, the consequences will be heard around the world. Curiously, Laguna del Maule, situated along the spine of the Andes, doesn’t even look like a volcano. No towering peak, no plume of smoke or steam, no stench of sulfur. But 36 times in the past 20,000 years, volcanic vents surrounding the lake basin have created monster fields of lava — with huge deposits of volcanic glass, pumice and ash. Once, almost a million years ago, this volcano field had an eruption that, if repeated, could change history by affecting air travel, agriculture and climate. Tantalizing scraps of lava indicate enormous eruptions 1.5 million and 336,000 years ago. It’s a maxim of geology: What happened before can happen again. The volcanic field is 20 kilometers in diameter, and the recent surge in attention is largely due to a widespread, 1.5 meter rise since 2007. “That’s phenomenal,” says Brad Singer, a professor of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who began studying this part of the Andes 20 years ago. “There is no other volcano in the world that is going up at this rate.”

Other causes for concern include swarms of earthquakes, horizontal spreading, spreading faults, and new detections of carbon dioxide gas that likely signal the enlargement of the underground magma pool that powers the volcano. Eruptions can be ranked by estimating the volume of volcanic ash (mainly tiny shards of glass) they release. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens released about one cubic kilometer. In 1991, Pinatubo in the Philippines sent more than 10 cubic kilometers; its ash and sulfur gas injected into the upper atmosphere cooled the planet for two years. About 950,000 years ago, an eruption at Laguna del Maule spewed dozens of cubic kilometers — perhaps more than 100. The eruption blanketed Argentina, downwind, with ash. A 100 cubic-kilometer eruption could cause global cooling, and intense damage to agriculture could affect the entire globe. Santiago, the capital of Chile, is not far from the volcano. It has a population of 6 million people. All of them would be adversely affected by a large eruption. Because the only people around Laguna del Maule are the horsemen who drive cattle in the summer, the immediate human impacts will be limited — unless giant flows of hot rock or debris reach Chilean cities. But dense ash-fall during the growing season could devastate agriculture in Argentina, to the east. Just 50 kilometers north of Laguna del Maule, a similar volcanic field, called Calabozos, has had three super-eruptions in the past million years, spewing about 1,000 cubic kilometers of ash in total. Those eruptions rank among the largest in a million years. -WF

Unrest growing among world’s supervolcanoes: Santorini in Greece, Uturuncu in Bolivia, the Yellowstone and Long Valley calderas in the U.S., Laguna del Maule in Chile, Campi Flegrei in Italy – almost all of the world’s active supervolcanic systems are now exhibiting some signs of inflation- a potential early indication that an eruption could be building in these volcanic systems for the near future. When they will erupt is anybody’s guess? In the meantime, unrest is also growing among the volcanoes of Central America, Kamchatka, Alaska, Indonesia, and Iceland- which is home to some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet. The clock is ticking. Their magma chambers are expanding. Tremors are increasing. If any one of these volcanic systems has a major eruption, we’re in deep trouble. If they erupt in cascading fashion; Earth will be reeling through a doomsday scenario. –TEP

Indonesia Volcano Erupts Again, Forces Evacuations
MEDAN, Indonesia November 3, 2013 (AP)

A volcano in western Indonesia erupted again Sunday, unleashing volcanic ash high into the sky and forcing the evacuation of villagers living around its slope.

Officials raised Mount Sinabung's alert status to the second-highest level after the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) -high mountain erupted early Sunday, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Authorities were working to evacuate residents from four North Sumatra province villages located within the mountain's three-kilometer (two-mile) danger zone, Nugroho said. About 1,300 villagers have been relocated to safer areas so far.

It was the volcano's second big eruption since late last month, with its Oct. 24 explosion prompting the evacuation of more than 3,300 people.

In September, more than 15,000 people were forced to flee when Mount Sinabung rumbled to life after being dormant for three years.

The volcano's previous major eruption, in August 2010, killed two people and forced 30,000 others to flee. It caught many scientists off guard because it had been quiet for four centuries.

Mount Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Seismic Swarm Momotombo volcano cause 300 microearthquakes
11/7/13

A seismic swarm in the Momotombo volcano last August claimed nearly 300 microearthquakes in a single day, more than twice as common tremors reported the same month, reported the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INET).

According to the Monthly Bulletin of Earthquakes and Volcanoes of INET, the Momotombo swarm of microearthquakes caused 284 on August 17.

The Momotombo, located north of Lake Managua, presented 524 microearthquakes between 16 and 18 August, according to the report.

The microearthquakes are earthquakes with magnitudes less than the magnitude of 1.0 on the Richter scale, which are not perceived by the population.

The swarm in August Momotombo volcano did not cause any damage in Nicaragua.

Regarding the normal seismic activity, the INET recorded 177 tremors with a magnitude of 1.0 Richter or more, both on the Pacific Ocean, and in the volcanic chain and northern Nicaragua.

The tremors under the Pacific Ocean were located off the coast of Corinto, Masachapa and The Small mouth, in the subduction zone, ie at the point of collision of continental plates Cocos and Caribbean, according to the report.

The earthquakes in the volcanic chain were located in San Cristobal volcano, Masaya and Concepcion.

The northern tremors occurred in the provinces of Estelí, Madriz, Nueva Segovia and the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN).

Most of the earthquakes, ie 54, had magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.9 Richter.  Another 50 earthquakes showed a magnitude of between 2.0 and 2.9 Richter.  The rest had magnitudes between 1.0 and 1.9 Richter, according to the bulletin.

Nicaragua is considered a country with high frequency of earthquakes.  2,000 tremors occur each year on average, according to statistics from INET.

Mt. Etna: First Major Eruption Since 1992
11/18/13

Mt. Etna in Sicily erupted over the weekend. Lava and hot ash began spewing out on Saturday, and tapered off on Sunday. Etna is Europe’s most active volcano, with 16 paroxysmal, or sudden, eruptions this year and the last major eruption occuring in 1992, according to Fox News.

The eruption didn’t pose a threat to surrounding villages, and evacuations were not ordered. Thanks to successful diversion efforts, only one building was destroyed, according to the Daily Mail. The nearby airport in Catania was even operating normally, except for the blocking of two sectors of air space over the volcano.

The eruption was announced by a violent tremor, producing a string of perfectly-shaped smoke rings. Experts think that the eruption may have caused a change in the structure of a vent, perhaps into a circular shape, which could have allowed Mount Etna to spew the smoke-like formations.

The activities of Mt. Etna have been well documented as far back as 1500 BC, and since then, has erupted over 200 times, ranging from almost undetectable to the catastrophic. For example, in 122 BC, an explosive eruption spewed so much ash onto the town of Catania, that it crushed hundreds of houses. The damage was so bad that the town’s inhabitants were exempted from paying taxes to Rome for ten years.

Mt. Etna’s current activities, which usually just include continuous summit degassing, explosive Strombolian eruptions, and frequent basaltic lava flows, is always a concern for the island of Sicily because 25 percent of the population lives around the base of Mt. Etna.

The effects of Etna have been positive over the years, with most of the island’s income stemming from agriculture, which is abundant because of the rich volcanic soil, and tourism. Should Mt. Etna become a reason to fear visiting Sicily, the effects on the island could be devastating.

Scientists Find New Volcano Rumbling Under Antarctica ice: 1,370 tremors: “It may blow or it may not. We don’t know.”
11/17/13

November 18, 2013 – ANTARCTICA – A volcano may be stirring more than a half-mile beneath a major ice sheet in Antarctica, raising the possibility of faster base melting that could ultimately affect climate. Seismologists working in a mountainous area of Marie Byrd Land in western Antarctica detected a swarm of low-magnitude earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 similar to those that can precede volcanic eruptions, according to a study published online Sunday in Nature Geoscience. The area of activity lies close to the youngest in a chain of volcanoes that formed over several million years, and the characteristics and depth of the seismic events are consistent with those found in volcanic areas of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines, the study concludes. The tight focus of the 1,370 tremors and their deep, long-period waves helped researchers rule out ice quakes, glacial motion or tectonic activity as causes. So, too, did their apparent depth: At 15-25 miles beneath the sub-glacial surface, they are close to the local boundary between Earth’s crust and mantle. “At first I had no idea it was something volcanic, and then, as I started putting together all the pieces, it started looking more and more like I’d found a volcano,” said study co-author Amanda Lough, a seismology graduate student at Washington University in St. Louis.

Chances of a massive fire-and-ice catastrophe are slim, however. Clusters with these wave characteristics have sometimes preceded eruptions, but not always, Lough said. And it would take a staggering release of energy to punch through more a half-mile of ice, she noted. “Does this mean that something is going to be happening in the next 20 years or so? I have no idea,” she said. “It’s not something that’s going to cause major issues. You’d have to have a huge, huge eruption.” Still, even a small eruption could increase base melting and lubricate the ice sheet. “If you have a future eruption it’s going to increase the heat flow, so you’re going to have more melting in the surrounding area, which will then lead to more water at the base of the ice sheet and cause the overlying ice flow to increase in velocity because it’s been lubricated.” How such melting could affect the vast ice sheet remains unknown. The data came from seismic equipment used to study the interaction of ice with the crust in Antarctica, part of a broader program studying polar ice caps. That data were collected in 2010-2011, but most of the events analyzed occurred in two swarms during the first two months of 2010 and in March 2011.

Radar imaging also revealed a buried ash layer believed to be from an eruption of Mt. Waesche about 8,000 years ago. There also is evidence of small flows of magma on the sub-ice topography, and the surface closest to the swarm appears to be a mound of volcanic material, according to the study. Lough, who expects to complete her PhD work next year, has been bowled over by reaction to the discovery. “This is my first paper and people keep calling me wanting to know about it,” she said. “This is going to be one of the chapters in my thesis — probably the most exciting one.” The study was led by geophysicist and seismologist Douglas Wiens of Washington University, who is supervising Lough’s thesis. Other research team members hailed from UC Santa Cruz, Penn State University, New Mexico Tech, Colorado State University, the University of Texas at Austin, Central Washington University and Ohio State. –LA Times

After several weeks of calm, Colima Volcano began puffing and spewing lava Tuesday and has remained active into Wednesday. The steam cloud rose some 2 miles, according to local publication El Siglo de Torreon.

3. Fuego, Guatemala
Fuego Volcano in Guatemala rumbled Wednesday as it shot out ash plumes and sent shock waves for 15 miles around, according to Prensa Libre.
Roofs and windows vibrated in the villages of Panimaché, Santa Sofia, Morelia, and others, reported Prensa Libre.

4. Mount Sinabung, Indonesia

On Tuesday evening, a record 10-kilometer-high (6.2-mile-high) ash cloud rose above Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Naek Sembiring, a local resident displaced by the activity, told the Jakarta Post on Wednesday: “Tuesday evening’s eruption was the strongest so far. I was terrified.”
Hot ash and lava spread to cities 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) away.
Mount Merapi, also in Indonesia, erupted Monday.

5. Etna, Italy
Italy’s Mount Etna began erupting on November 16 and continues to glow as lava fills its mouth.
Etna produces enough lava annually to fill Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, reports Live Science. Sicilians have grown accustomed to its outbursts over thousands of years.

6. Yasur, Vanuatu
The level of explosive activity at Vanuatu volcano Yasur remains low, though it has been pumping out ash since the beginning of the month. Vanuatu is an island nation east of Australia. Several other volcanoes around the world are active on Wednesday, in an ongoing state of eruption, as listed by the Smithsonian Institution.

Italy's Mount Etna erupts

Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, has erupted again, showering volcanic ash on towns dotting the mountain's slopes and nearby Taormina.

The eruption Saturday did not force any evacuations, but a highway was closed for half an hour as a precaution. Authorities also briefly closed two of four air corridors serving the nearby Catania airport but air traffic was not interrupted.

Why Have 10 Major Volcanoes Along The Ring Of Fire Suddenly Roared To Life?

Ten major volcanoes have erupted along the Ring of Fire during the past few months, and the mainstream media in the United States has been strangely silent about this.  But this is a very big deal.  We are seeing eruptions at some volcanoes that have been dormant for decades.  Yes, it is certainly not unusual for two or three major volcanoes along the Ring of Fire to be active at the same time, but what we are witnessing right now is highly unusual.  And if the U.S. media is not concerned about this yet, the truth is that they should be.  Approximately 90 percent of all earthquakes and approximately 80 percent of all volcanic eruptions occur along the Ring of Fire, and it runs directly up the west coast of the United States.  Perhaps if Mt. Rainier in Washington state suddenly exploded or a massive earthquake flattened Los Angeles the mainstream media would wake up.  Most Americans have grown very complacent about these things, but right now we are witnessing volcanic activity almost everywhere else along the Ring of Fire.  It is only a matter of time before it happens here too.

Sadly, most Americans cannot even tell you what the Ring of Fire is.  The following is how Wikipedia defines the “Ring of Fire”…

The Ring of Fire is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. In a 40,000 km (25,000 mi) horseshoe shape, it is associated with a nearly continuous series of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs, and volcanic belts and/or plate movements.  It has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes.

An easy way to think about the Ring of Fire is to imagine a giant red band stretching along the perimeter of the Pacific Ocean.

And yes, that includes the entire west coast of the United States and the entire southern coast of Alaska.

10 major volcanoes along the Ring of Fire have suddenly roared to life in recent months.  The following are short excerpts from news reports about those eruptions…

Volcano creates new island off the coast of Japan: A dramatic volcanic eruption in the Pacific Ocean has created a tiny new islet in Japan’s territorial waters, officials said Thursday, the first time in decades the nation has seen the phenomenon.

The navy spotted smoke about 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) south of Tokyo on Wednesday and Japan’s coastguard later verified the birth of the islet around the Ogasawara island chain.

Video footage showed plumes of smoke and ash billowing from the 200-metre island, and Japan’s coastguard said it was warning vessels to use caution in the area until the eruption cools off.

Mount Sinabung in Indonesia: A volcano in western Indonesia has erupted eight times in just a few hours, “raining down rocks” over a large area and forcing thousands to flee their homes, officials said Sunday.

Mount Sinabung has been erupting on and off since September, but went into overdrive late Saturday and early Sunday, repeatedly spewing out red-hot ash and rocks up to eight kilometres (five miles) into the air.

Colima in Mexico: On Monday night and Tuesday morning, the Colima volcano showed two strong exhalations; ejecting lava down its slopes and ash skyward, that has reached several villages. Since last Sunday, the Volcan de Fuego de Colima was reactivated after several weeks of apparent calm and until Tuesday registered between 30 and 35 puffs per day, spewing lava down its slopes and ash that reached the people of Cheese, municipality of Cuauhtémoc, Colima, and some towns in the state of Jalisco.

Sakurajima in Japan: After a short phase of weaker activity, the volcano began to erupt more violently yesterday with a series of powerful explosions that sent ash plumes up to 15,000 ft (4,5 km). Near-constant ash emissions have been taking place from the Showa crater.

Fuego in Guatemala: Two lava flows are active on the upper slopes of the volcano at the moment, to the Taniluya (south) and Ceniza canyon (SE). The effusive activity started on 11 Nov and increased on 18 November, reaching a length of 600 m. Constant avalanches detach from the flow fronts.  At the same time, explosive activity at the summit crater remained at low to moderate levels, with strombolian explosions that produce ash plumes of up to 800 m height and incandescent jets visible from distance.

Santa María/Santiaguito in Guatemala: A phreatomagmatic (water-magma interaction driven) explosion yesterday morning produced a plume of fine ash rising to 3.2 km altitude (700 m above the lava dome) and drifted SE, causing ash fall in Finca La Florida.

Yaser in Vanuatu: Geohazards reports that the volcano continues to produce near-continuous ash emissions while explosions are relatively weak. This phase of ash emissions began on 3 November and are likely to continue into the coming days and weeks.

Popocatepetl in Mexico: The Popocatepetl volcano showcased with a layer of snow was observed throughout the morning and mid-day from the city of Puebla and columns generated by medium-intensity exhalations. According to the monitoring system of the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) in the last 24 hours, the colossus presented 57 exhalations of low intensity, probably accompanied by emissions of steam and gas.

Mount Marapi in Indonesia: Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia, erupted earlier Monday, shooting a cloud of black ash about 2,000 meter high, officials said.

Kliuchevskoi on the Kamchatka Peninsula: Kliuchevskoi on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia had a busy weekend after its busy week — and a lot of the action was caught on the webcams pointed at the volcano or by satellite. For much of Friday and into Saturday (October 18-19), the volcano continued to produce some vigorous lava fountains and lava flows, mixed in with Strombolian explosions that sent bombs down the slopes of the volcano. This activity was significant enough to cause some aviation alerts even over the western Aleutian Islands.

So why is this happening?

2013 marks record year for the number of volcanoes erupting across the planet

December 5, 2013 – GEOLOGY – This year will go down on record, as seeing the most volcanic eruptions recorded in modern history. The previous number was set in 2010, at 82 volcanic eruptions for the year. The number of volcanoes erupting across the planet has been steadily rising from a meager number of just 55 recorded in 1990. While most scientists may readily dismiss any significance to the latest figures and may be quick to say the planet is just experiencing normal geological activity, it does raise other concerns about just what may be transpiring within the interior of our planet. The average number of volcanic eruptions per year should be about 50 to 60; as of December 5, 2013, we already at 83. Volcanic eruptions are one way the planet dissipates a dangerous build-up of heat, magma, and pressurized gases. The planet’s outer core is thought to flirt with critical temperatures in the range of around 4400 °C (8000 °F). Any rise or major fluctuation in interior gradient could have profound and disruptive effects on processes whose very properties are government by convective heat emanating from the planet’s outer core: magnetic field propagation, tectonic plate movements, sea-floor spreading mechanics, and mantle plume activity. Mantle plumes or hotspots are thought to be the central mechanism which fuels the vast underground chambers of many of the world’s supervolcanoes. –The Extinction Protocol

Yeah, noticed too that volcanos are starting to become the "new norm". Not yet, but it's getting there.

Volcano erupts in eastern El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, Dec 29 (Reuters) - The Chaparrastique volcano in eastern El Salvador erupted on Sunday, environment officials said, belching a column of ash high into the air.

There were no immediate reports of injuries in the San Miguel region, where the volcano is located and that is known for its coffee production.

More than 19,000 flee as volcano erupts on Indonesia's Sumatra

A volcano that has been erupting for months on Indonesia’s Sumatra island sent ash 23,000 feet into the air overnight on Monday, forcing more than 19,000 people to flee, authorities said.

Mount Sinabung blasted out lava, ash and rocks nine times Monday night and Tuesday morning, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told the AFP news agency.

He said people had been warned to stay out of a three-mile radius of the volcano, and soldiers had been sent in to evacuate diehards who had refused to leave, AFP reported.

The volcano began erupting in September after being quiet for three years, and by November tens of thousands of acres of crops were reported to have been damaged. Photos taken in November showed ash and rocks blasting into the sky and tomato crops covered in dust.
