Indonesia volcano erupts again
2/1/14

Death toll is at 14 as the volcano continues to spit clouds of gas and lava as high as 6,500 feet. Rescue efforts have been hampered by darkness.

MOUNT SINABUNG, Indonesia — An Indonesian volcano that has been rumbling for months unleashed a major eruption Saturday, killing 14 people just a day after authorities allowed thousands of villagers who had been evacuated to return to its slopes, saying that activity was decreasing, officials said.

Among the dead on Mount Sinabung were a local television journalist and four high-school students and their teacher who were visiting the mountain to see the eruptions up close, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. At least three other people were injured, and authorities feared the death toll would rise.

Sinabung in western Sumatra has been erupting for four months, sending lava and searing gas and rocks rolling down its southern slopes. Authorities had evacuated more than 30,000 people, housing them in cramped tents, schools and public buildings. Many have been desperate to return to check on homes and farms, presenting a dilemma for the government.

On Friday, authorities allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a three-mile danger zone to return home after volcanic activity decreased. Others living close to the peak have been returning to their homes over the past four months despite the dangers.

On Saturday, a series of huge blasts and eruptions thundered from the 8,530-foot-high volcano, sending lava and pyroclastic flows up to 2.8 miles away, Nugroho said. Television footage showed villages, farms and trees around the volcano covered in thick gray ash.

Following the eruption, all those who had been allowed to return home Friday were ordered back into evacuation centers.

"The death toll is likely to rise as many people are reported still missing and the darkness hampered our rescue efforts," said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the operation to retrieve the charred corpses some two miles from the volcano's peak.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has sporadically erupted since September.

In 2010, 324 people killed over two months when Indonesia's most volatile volcano, Mount Merapi, roared into life. As now in Sinabung, authorities struggled to keep people away from the mountain. Scientists monitor Merapi, Sinabung and other Indonesian volcanos nonstop, but predicting their activity with any accuracy is all but impossible.

The latest eruptions came just a week after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited displaced villagers in Sinabung and pledged to relocate them away from the mountain. Villagers are attracted to the slopes of volcanoes because the eruptions make for fertile soil.

Sinabung's last major eruption was in August 2010, when it killed two people. Prior to that it had been quite for four centuries.

19 more volcanoes on alert

The government has raised the status on another 19 volcanoes in the country to alert level — the second-highest category — in the wake of the Mount Sinabung eruption in North Sumatra that killed 16 people on Saturday.

Besides the 19 new additions, three volcanos have been on high alert status since last year. They include Lokon and Karangetang in North Sulawesi and Rokatenda in East Nusa Tenggara.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) issued the raised status on Monday for the 19 volcanoes, which are scattered across the archipelago, but has yet to call for the evacuation of populations living nearby.

The 19 volcanoes are Kelud, Ijen, Bromo, Semeru and Raung in East Java; Lewotobi Perempuan in East Nusa Tenggara; Ibu, Gamkonora, Dukono and Gamalama in North Maluku; Soputan in North Sulawesi; Sangeang Api in West Nusa Tenggara; Papandayan in West Java; Dieng in Central Java; Seulewah Agam in Aceh; Talang and Marapi in West Sumatra; Anak Krakatau in Banten; and Kerinci in Jambi.

Indonesia is among the world’s most seismically active countries, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. The 19 volcanoes are among about 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

Mt. Sinabung has been sporadically erupting since September.

Though the alert level for the 19 volcanoes had been raised, Sutopo called on nearby residents not to panic.

“Volcanoes erupt in stages, they won’t suddenly erupt. Their activity can be categorized from normal to waspada [alert] to siaga [high alert] to awas [danger, the highest level],” he said on Monday.

He said that the BNPB was now keeping an eye on Mount Kelud, whose status was raised to alert following intensified volcanic activity.

The BNPB decision to raise the status of Mt. Kelud had triggered panic among local residents.

Local officials in Kediri have issued a warning to people living close to Mt. Kelud to stay outside a 2-kilometer radius set by the The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).

On Saturday, at least 16 people were killed and three others severely injured due to pyroclastic clouds emitted by Mt. Sinabung.

Previously, the volcano’s ongoing eruptions had claimed the lives of 31 evacuees from various illnesses such as depression, asthma and hypertension.

Rescuers had to halt operations due to fears of further eruptions. Currently, the evacuation zone is between 5 and 7 km on the southeast slope of the volcano.

Sixteen villages had to be evacuated following the eruptions.

Meanwhile, responding to the BNPB report, Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Agung Laksono called on people living close to the volcanoes to remain calm.

“[The raising of the alert status] is to raise awareness among government officials and members of the public so that they can anticipate the worst from the early stage,” Agung said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Agung said that the population in a disaster zone should heed government instructions to evacuate in the event of a volcanic eruption.

“We ask for cooperation from residents. If the local government decides to evacuate their neighborhood they have to follow the procedures,” Agung said.

The country has been battered by a string of natural disasters in recent months.

Authorities in a number of disaster-prone regions have been warned about the potential for worsening disasters, including landslides and floods, due to heavy rains nationwide.

In West Java, the PVMBG advised that people living in landslide-prone areas in Ciramba and Mekarmulya subdistricts, Cikalong district, Cianjur, should be relocated.

In Jombang, East Java, 14 people were buried by a landslide on Monday. Seven bodies have been recovered, while the other seven remain missing.

In Semarang, a landslide displaced 32 families from the Tangkil Baru residential complex in Sukorejo subdistrict, Gunungpati district, whose houses were destroyed.

Last week, sections of the Java’s northern coastal highway were inundated by floodwaters causing a major traffic disruption.

In East Java, the flooding disrupted traffic from Situbondo to Surabaya.

The flooding also inundated a section of the northern coastal highway connecting Semarang and Jakarta, causing massive traffic jams in some areas. (dhi)

Peru: Ubinas Volcano active again

February 4, 2014

By Rachel Chase

After several months of little or no activity, the Ubinas Volcano in Moquegua is once again spewing smoke, ash.

The Ubinas Volcano near the southern city of Arequipa in Peru has become active again after several months of minimal activity.

According to El Comercio, the volcano is emitting columns made of ash, smoke, and steam, as well as registering seismic movements. Since Jan. 31, the volcano has reportedly experienced as many as 100 seismic events every day, including a Feb. 1 movement which lasted for seven hours.

El Comercio reports that the various ash columns released by the volcano have reached heights from 700 to 2,000 meters.

The volcano’s recent activity has been attributed to water seeping into the crater. When the water comes into contact with magma, the it turns into steam, which then creates pressure inside the crater. This pressure is what causes the volcano to expel ash.

No damages have been reported as a result of the volcano’s most recent activity. A series of similar explosions in September created health problems for many local residents, some of whom suffered from headaches and gastrointestinal problems after breathing the silicon ash released by Ubinas.

The Ubinas Volcano, located in the Moquegua region 70 kilometers outside of Arequipa, has displayed a sudden burst of activity. Prior to the September eruptions, the volcano had been dormant since 2009.

From 0 to ERUPTION in 60 days: You thought that volcano was COLD?

Liquid hot MAG...MMMMA

By  Brid-Aine Parnell,  17th February 2014

Volcanoes can become ready to blow in less time than scientists had previously thought, but their magma is usually kept in a cool, near-solid state.

Volcano erupting

New research on Mount Hood in Oregon suggests that volcanoes can come up with liquid hot magma in as little as a couple of months, but most of the time, they contain magma that has been kept cool for thousands of years.

"If the temperature of the rock is too cold, the magma is like peanut butter in a refrigerator," said Adam Ken, an Oregon State University (OSU) geologist.

"It just isn't very mobile. For Mount Hood, the threshold seems to be about 750 degrees C - if it warms up just 50 to 75 degrees above that, it greatly decreases the viscosity of the magma and makes it easier to mobilise."

The key is when much hotter magma from deep within the Earth's crust comes up to meet the jellied magma four or five kilometres below the surface. The mixing of hot and cold is what triggered the last two eruptions at Mount Hood 220 and 1,500 years ago.

Mount Hood's eruptions aren't particularly violent, the magma tends to ooze instead of exploding, which is down to the different compositions of the two magmas, according to a previous OSU study.

"What happens when they mix is what happens when you squeeze a tube of toothpaste in the middle," said Kent. "A big glob kind of plops out the top, but in the case of Mount Hood, it doesn't blow the mountain to pieces."

The mobility of the magma depends on the amount of crystallisation - when it is more than 50 per cent crystalline, it's rendered immobile - which in turn depends on the temperature.

"People think about there being this big reservoir of liquid magma under a volcano, but we don't think it's in that state all the time," said Kari Cooper, associate professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC Davis and lead author of the study.

Cooper and Kent figured out that Mount Hood's magma could be mobile as little as one per cent of the time, and definitely less than ten per cent, by studying the radioactive isotopes and distribution of trace elements in rocks ejected from previous eruptions.

The study could lead to better predictions by volcanologists, who can used seismic or other remote imaging techniques to look for whether the magma is liquid or semi-solid. The scientists plan to do further studies at other volcanoes to ensure the pattern repeats at other sites.

"What is encouraging from another standpoint is that modern technology should be able to detect when magma is beginning to liquefy, or mobilise," Kent said, "and that may give us warning of a potential eruption. Monitoring gases, utilising seismic waves and studying ground deformation through GPS are a few of the techniques that could tell us that things are warming."

The full study, "Rapid remobilisation of magmatic crystals kept in cold storage", was published in Nature. ®

How could they even know that? They didn't have temperature probes back then!  Roll Eyes

The tendency of "scientists" to write stuff like this for the sole purpose of a "professional paper" that gets published in "recognized" industry journals is such a self-serving effort that ends up being taken as fact, when in reality, their article is nothing more than a, "in my professional opinion..." piece.

Yet again, it's not fact, it's theory that is being presented as fact.

Magma buildup causes new series of earth tremors on Canary islands

The island of El Hierro, which is one of the Spanish-governed Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean has once again registered high levels of seismic activity in the form of hundreds of small earthquakes.

The island, which has long been the focus of seismic activity in the region, suffered around 300 shocks of levels between 1.5 and 2.4 on the Richter Scale between Friday and Monday.

The strongest shock which has been registered so far was of 2.4 and took place 16 kilometers below the surface of the island, which has a population of around 10,000.

The Spanish Geographical Institute (IGN) highlights that the activity took place in the north-west of the island and adds that the level of the shocks was too low for them to be felt by the population.

2011 saw the eruption of an underwater volcano off the coast of the small fishing village of La Restinga on the south of the island. Sulphur from the eruption stained the sea around the volcano saw the village evacuated as magma and debris from the eruption bubbled over the surface of the sea.

In December last year, the Canary Island Volcanology Institute confirmed the island had risen by 8.3 centimeters.

The recent buildup of magma suggests the activity looks likely to continue and opens the possibility that the underwater volcano could again spring into life and perhaps even lead to the creation of a new island off the south coast.

Iceland's Hekla Volcano Close to Erupting, Scientist Claims

The most prominent sign of an impending eruption is bulging ground on the northern side of the volcano.

3/19/14

Hekla volcano, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, could be close to erupting, a University of Iceland geoscientist claims.

The most prominent sign of an impending eruption is bulging ground on the northern side of the volcano. This surface swelling indicates magma (molten rock) is rising under the volcano, pushing up the ground as it fills fractures and pipes beneath Hekla. According to GPS monitoring of the expanding surface, there is now more magma underneath Hekla than before the volcano's last eruption in 2000, University of Iceland geophysicist Páll Einarsson said in a report published in the Icelandic newspaper Morgunblaðið on Monday (March 17). Hekla volcano "could erupt soon," Einarsson said.

Geoscientists in Iceland keep a close eye on Hekla, because the volcano blows its top with very little notice. During Hekla's last eruption, in 2000, it took just 79 minutes from the first warning earthquake until the volcano exploded, Einarsson said. But Monday's alert is just the latest in a string of warnings based on Hekla's bulging ground. Volcano watchers have anticipated a new eruption at Hekla since 2006, when tiny earthquakes and surface swelling first hinted that new magma had appeared. Media reports warned of similar surface swelling at Hekla in 2011 and 2013, without a subsequent eruption.

Hekla volcano has blasted more than 20 times in the last 1,200 years, blanketing southern Iceland with thick layers of ash and lava. Some of the eruptions are short and small, while others continue for months, pumping enough ash into the atmosphere to chill temporarily the northern latitudes.

The last eruption at Hekla started on Feb. 26, 2000, and lasted for nearly two weeks.

A Hitherto Unknown Supervolcano About to Erupt?

During the late night, there was a large phreatic explosion near the northern shore of Lake Dellen in Sweden, long thought to be the result of an ancient meteor strike. Fortunately it was in an unpopulated area and no casualties have been reported. The eruption cloud rose to more than 12 km in height and it has forced a major rethink about the origin and immediate future of the Lake Dellen formation, says Professor Einar Pall Sigurdurson and Professor Bödvar Reynirson of the Institution of Geosciences at Uppsala University.

Because lamellar quartz similar to shocked quartz has been found in the area, it was assumed a meteorite strike was responsible for the formation of the 12 by 17 km structure. This ignored the substantial amounts of obsidian found on and near the resurgent dome dividing Lake Dellen into North and South Dellen.

Further indications that the structure is volcanic come from geothermal and gravity field surveys. It was found that the area had a very high temperature potential for geothermal exploitation. According to Professor Sigurdurson, the gravity data, which was originally thought to be proof of an impact structure, is really the signature of a very large body of magma. Unfortunately, there is no monitoring of the area and the quakes reported by locals since last autumn were too small to register at the Uppsala Institution. It would seem we have had a significant magmatic intrusion going on right under our nose, Professor Sigurdurson continues.

Yesterday’s phreatic explosion proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the feature is volcanic and Professor Sigurdurson says it is most likely a caldera system, a supervolcano, that may be in the last stages before an eruption. The size of the body of magma is many times larger than that which caused the original caldera. The reason we have not known about it, Professor Sigurdurson continues, is that the many periods of glaciation and deglaciations over the past half a million years have effectively removed all the usual telltales of volcanic activity and basically left only granitic structures and even those heavily distorted by glacial erosion. Also, we had thought volcanism extinct (in Scandinavia) for at least 90 million years. But there are many factors that now make sense such as that the point of highest land rise known, 800 metres since deglaciation and currently 8 cm per year lies on the coast, not far from Lake Dellen according to Professor Sigurdurson.

In a press release, Professor Bödvar Reynirson, head of the Institution of Geosciences, says they will begin to monitor the area starting tomorrow. We will of course bring you any further news as soon as we can.

Evacuations as Peru volcano rumbles to life

A volcano in Peru that has not blown its top in four decades spewed more ash skyward on Tuesday, after authorities evacuated villagers to avoid Ubinas's wrath.

The volcano in southwestern Peru blasted back to life causing about 60 villagers from Querapi, near its base, to be relocated Saturday, Ubinas town mayor Pascual Coaquira said.

"We are readying a shelter for refugees from the blasts," he added Tuesday, noting that the whole Moquegua region was on alert.

"The volcano has been emitting a lot of ash all day, the people in the town (of Ubinas) are having some problems breathing, the mayor added. They have been given masks, he said.

Peru's geological and mining agency (Ingemmet) said lava had been building up in recent weeks, and warned locals they should prepare for the possibility of more evacuations.

In the broader Moquegua area plus Arequipa and Tacna, there are about 40 volcanoes, most dormant.

Volcanoes All Over The Ring Of Fire Are Erupting Right Now – Is The U.S. Next?

All of a sudden, the Ring of Fire is starting to tremble violently.  Last month, we had a whole bunch of major earthquakes along the Ring of Fire, and this month volcanoes all over the Ring of Fire are erupting.  Of course there has always been seismic activity within this giant band that stretches around the Pacific Ocean.  After all, approximately 75 percent of all volcanoes are located in the Ring of Fire and approximately 90 percent of all global earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire.  But what is alarming is that the level of activity appears to be rising.  Chile is experiencing almost constant shaking by earthquakes, a volcano in Peru just awakened for the first time in 40 years, and major volcanic eruptions have just taken place in Ecuador, the Kamchatka peninsula and off the coast of Japan.  The west coast of the United States also lies along the Ring of Fire, but so far it has gotten off easy.  Yes, there has been a little bit of shaking in southern California in recent weeks, but it hasn’t been too bad.  But scientists assure us that will change.  At some point, there will be a major seismic event along the west coast.  It is only a matter of time.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media in the United States pays very little attention to seismic activity around the rest of the world unless it happens in a heavily populated area.  But the truth is that we have been witnessing some very unusual things lately.

For example, a volcanic eruption off the coast of Japan has created a brand new Island called “Niijima” that is literally eating another small volcanic island next to it…

Niijima is Japan’s newest island located in the Philippine Sea that has consistently grown in size since its inception in November. A NASA satellite image from March 30 found that Niijima merged with nearby island Nishino-shima.

Niijima resulted from a seafloor volcano that sprouted in the western Pacific Ocean this past November. It is located 600 miles south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which spans from the coast Chile to Alaska and Siberia and then south to New Zealand. The volcanic island has not stopped erupting since November.

As a result of the nonstop eruption, Niijima recently merged with another nearby volcanic island, Nishino-shima. The newly formed island is about 3,280 feet across and sits 196 feet above sea level.

In Ecuador, the Tungurahua volcano has been extremely active lately.  In fact, it shot hot ash 10 km up into the sky just the other day…

A volcano in central Ecuador has spewed up a column of hot ash and smoke 10 kilometres high, increasing fears of an eruption.

Activity has been building at the Tungurahua volcano 130 kilometres south of the capital Quito since early February.

On Friday (Saturday Australian time), experts reported a loud explosion that lasted for five minutes and an expulsion of ash.

Most Americans don’t realize this, but there are some very powerful volcanoes in Russia as well.  On the Kamchatka peninsula, which is located on the east coast of Russia, a large volcano has belched a column of ash 6 km into the air…

Volcano Shiveluch has erupted ash at an altitude of six kilometres above sea level in Russian Far East’s Ust-Kamchatsky municipal entity, Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences geophysical service stated on Sunday.

Down in Peru, a volcano that has been dormant for most of the past 40 years has suddenly “awakened” and is now “spewing ash and dust into the sky”…

It’s been four decades since a volcano in Peru has awakened, but on Tuesday, it came back to life and began spewing ash and dust into the sky. The volcano is located in southwestern Peru and has led to more than 50 people being evacuated from the nearby village of Querapi.

So should we be alarmed by all of this?

Without a doubt, it is normal for volcanoes to erupt and for the earth to shake along the Ring of Fire.

But what is a bit concerning is that the intensity and the frequency seems to be picking up.

Just look at what has been happening down in Chile.  We have seen dozens upon dozens of large earthquakes down there over the past month, and there have been eight earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater in Chile over the past 24 hours alone.

Hopefully things will settle down soon.

But if they don’t, it will probably only be a matter of time before the west coast of the U.S. joins the party.

Scientists have been warning about “the Big One” down in California for decades.  But up until now, it hasn’t happened and people have gotten complacent.  Scientists tell us that a magnitude 7.5 earthquake along the Puente Hills fault in southern California would be “the quake from hell” and would cause hundreds of billions of dollars of damage.  An earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or greater in the same location would be catastrophic beyond what most people would dare to imagine.

And do you remember the devastation that the eruption of Mount St. Helens caused back in 1980?

Well, that was small potatoes compared to what we could eventually see up in the Northwest.

In Oregon, Mt. Hood experienced a swarm of more than 100 earthquakes in just a few days last month, fueling fears of an eruption.

Up in Washington state, Mt. Rainier could send a river of volcanic mud 30 feet thick over surrounding communities at any time, and a full-blown eruption of Mt. Rainier could produce a cloud of volcanic ash that would potentially cover most of the continental United States.

But of course most of the recent attention has been on the Yellowstone supervolcano.  A YouTube video that seemed to show a herd of bison running away from Yellowstone has been described as “bunk” by authorities, but now a new video has emerged that appears to show a herd of elk running away from Yellowstone…

So does that video actually prove anything?

Of course not.

But what we do know is that certain areas of Yellowstone have been experiencing “ground uplift” in recent months, and there has been some highly unusual earthquake activity in the park in recent weeks.  In fact, one of the earthquakes was the largest to be recorded at Yellowstone in about 30 years.

Does that mean that something major is going to happen soon?

Let’s hope not, because a major eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano would end life as we know it for most of the country.

We have entered a time of heightened seismic activity all over the globe.  Even with all of our modern technology, we are still at the mercy of natural disasters.

If you are living along the west coast or near one of these volcanoes, your life could literally change at any moment.

That little fearmongering video is a fraud!

He's using video of elk that I saw one or two days ago, showing the herd crossing a road, and the point of the video was that one elk couldn't get over the fence, but finally did jump over and then ran to catch up with the herd.

And here's this guy, whoever he is, is trying to pass it off as something it isn't. It's not animals running for their lives!  Roll Eyes

And people wonder why Christians are looked down on when we have people like this guy making these outrageous claims that are bold face lies.

I'm really getting tired of this junk. Angry

Yellowstone bison predicted an earthquake?

Thursday, April 03, 2014

LOS ANGELES (KABC) --  Do animals have a sixth sense for detecting natural disasters before they hit?

Though scientists have been hard-pressed to prove it, a recent online video of bison stampeding down a highway in Yellowstone National Park has set off rumors across the Internet.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck the park on Sunday - the strongest tremor the park has felt since 1980. No damage or injuries were reported, but the video, which claims that the herd could feel the quake before it happened, sparked fear of an impending volcanic eruption.

The video - captioned "Alert! Yellowstone Buffalo Running for Their Lives - was posted on YouTube more than a week before the quake hit. It appears to be fake, but given the fact that Yellowstone is sitting on what's called a super volcano, a lot of people believed it.

So much so that Yellowstone officials put out their own video hoping to dispel the myth.

"We get some pretty wild rumors out there," Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash said.

Bison, elk and other animals have moved out of the park, but mostly because of the changing seasons, Nash said.

"They tend to migrate outside the park to lower elevations where they think there's something to eat that's easier to get at," Nash said.

On the other hand, a three-year German study of ants living in mounds on a fault line showed that the ants moved out of their mounds right before earthquakes measuring 2.0 and up. There were 10 such earthquakes and the ants temporarily departed all 10 times.

Ants, however, are a little harder to see than a charging herd of bison, but seem to be a bit more accurate.

^^ Maybe ants are much smarter than everyone thinks...

Proverbs 6:6  Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
Pro 6:7  Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
Pro 6:8  Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

Massive Volcanic Eruptions Wreaking Havoc On The World

As the world seems to hurdle from one crisis to another, today a 43-year market veteran warned King World News that massive volcanic eruptions are now wreaking havoc on the world.  Jeffrey Saut, Chief Investment Strategist at Raymond James, also warned this trend is going to continue for many years, even though no one in the mainstream media is talking about this.

Eric King:  “Jeffrey, we’ve seen skyrocketing food prices.”

Saut:  “This has a lot to do with the weather.  You’ve had a draught in Brazil, so the price of Brazilian coffee is up over 80% year-to-date.  I know a farmer in California who used to produce a bunch of alfalfa.  He’s about to lose his entire crop because he can’t get water....

“You also have a drought in Texas.  One of my themes, Eric, has been the weird weather.  The world is actually cooling, not warming.  What’s causing this is the volcanic ash in the air.  You’ve got more volcanic ash in the air than at any time in recorded history.

If you look at volcanic activity around the world you will see that another huge one just erupted over in Indonesia.  With all of this volcanic ash, what’s happened is it’s caused the Hadley cell winds to shift toward the poles.  The Hadley cell winds north of the equator spin counter-clockwise, and south of the equator they spin clockwise.  These winds carry the hot equatorial wind up into the troposphere, where it moves toward the poles.

Normally these winds only move 30 degrees north of the equator and 30 degrees south.  But with this huge input of volcanic ash, these winds have had a massive shift toward the poles.  This is wreaking havoc with the weather patterns, and it’s here to stay.  This is a very interesting situation, because not only does it bring water into play, but it also means a number of companies are going to have to tweak their business models for this extreme weather that, as I said, is here to stay for many years.

This all started 4 years ago with the volcanic eruption in Iceland, which shut down Heathrow Airport for 5 days.  There is another volcano in Iceland called Grimsvotn which has been erupting ever since.  But the volcanic activity around the world is massive.  Even if the volcanic activity somehow abated right now, there is so much volcanic ash in the atmosphere that it’s going to affect our weather for the next 3 or 4 years.  This is even if all volcanic activity stopped.

There has always been a polar vortex, but normally they don’t come down as far into the U.S. as they did this year.  And the reason they came down so far into the U.S. is because of all this volcanic ash that’s in the atmosphere.  And this is going to happen again this next winter.  I recall reading in the Chicago Tribune that in the month of January the median temperature in Chicago was below that of the North Pole.  We can expect more of this for years to come, and nobody in the mainstream media is even talking about this.”

Magma recharging Mount St. Helens

Mount St. Helens is showing signs of long-term uplift and minor earthquake activity, but there are no signs that the volcano in southwest Washington state is likely to erupt soon, federal scientists said Wednesday.

Mount St. Helens is showing signs of long-term uplift and minor earthquake activity, but there are no signs that the volcano in southwest Washington state is likely to erupt soon, federal scientists said Wednesday.

The magma reservoir about 5 miles beneath the 8,363-foot volcano has been slowly re-pressurizing since 2008.

Scientists have suspected that fresh molten rock has been recharging the volcano since the last eruption, which lasted from 2004 to 2008, but they have only recently been able to confirm it, said Seth Moran, a volcano seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

"This is giving long-term (data) that it's getting ready to erupt again, but it could be decades before it does something again," Moran said. "It's getting ready but it's not there."

The eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980, killed 57 people, knocked down a forest and filled the sky and rivers with volcanic ash.

Moran said the uplift is slow, steady and subtle, measuring about the length of a thumbnail over the past six years. And what scientists are seeing now is similar to activity that occurred in the years after the 1980 eruption, he added.

Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network have been monitoring subtle changes in the ground and minor earthquakes over the years.

"This is a very tiny signal, and it's only because we have so many monitors," said Carolyn Driedger, a spokeswoman with the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory. Scientists have been able to detect it through a vast network of GPS and seismic monitors, she said.

The agency issued a statement Wednesday in conjunction with a paper that Moran is presenting this week to the Seismological Society of America, she said.

"This is probably what Mount St. Helens does," Moran said, explaining the volcano recharging. "It may stay perched at ready stage for a long time before it starts to erupt. The reassuring thing is: when it's really ready to erupt, it gives lots and lots of signs."

Sakurajima volcano erupting in Japan

The Sakurajima volcano started erupting on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu today. Sakurajima is considered to be one of the most active volcanos in Japan. The national meteorological service of the country reports that the column of ash is rising to the height of over 4,5km.

According to Japanese meteorologists, this eruption has become the most powerful this year. The flow of lava and ash is moving in the direction of Ibusiki City but currently there is no information about any wreckage or casualties.

Sakurajima erupts up to several hundred times a year. Today's eruption is No.126. The volcanic activity usually harms the neighbouring Kagoshima Prefecture where the only Japanese space launch site Uchinoura is located.

Erebus volcano

Mount Erebus stratovolcano is the highest and most active volcano of Antarctica, one of the Volcanic Seven Summits, and the largest of 4 volcanoes that form the roughly triangular Ross Island

http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/erebus.html

Newly-discovered active volcano could erupt underneath ice in Antarctica and add to effects of global warming, say scientists

Researchers discovered the volcano underneath the ice after setting up devices to measure tectonic activity across Marie Byrd Land in the west of the continent. Scientists had intended to use the seismograph machines to help in their efforts to weight the ice sheet - only to find that a volcano was in fact forming underneath the ice. Discovery: A newly-discovered active volcano could erupt underneath Antarctica, melting the ice from below

Evacuations Ordered Near El Salvador Volcano

Approximately 1,000 people have been relocated from villages near a volcano in the country's far south that reportedly began expelling reddish ash on Monday

Authorities in El Salvador have evacuated at least 1,000 people living in close proximity to the Chaparrastique volcano, where increased seismic activity has been reported this week

Alaska volcano erupts with new intensity, prompting 'red' alert
6/3/14

JUNEAU Alaska (Reuters) - An Alaska volcano that has been spewing ash and lava for years began erupting with new intensity this week, pushing a plume of smoke and ash as high as 24,000 feet (7,315 meters) and prompting scientists to issue their highest volcanic alert in five years, authorities said on Tuesday.

But the intense action at the Pavlof Volcano, located in an uninhabited region nearly 600 miles (966 km) southwest of Anchorage, has so far not disrupted any regional air traffic, thanks to favorable weather that has made it easier for flights to navigate around the affected area.

Still, the eruption was intense enough for Alaska Volcano Observatory scientists to issue their first red alert warning since 2009, when the state's Mount Redoubt had a series of eruptions that spewed ash 50,000 feet (15,240 meters).

"This means it can erupt for weeks or even months," observatory research geologist Michelle Coombs said of the warning. "I don't think we will be at red for that long, but we are expecting it to go for a while based on its past."

Coombs said affected areas are uninhabited except for some hunting destinations.

Geologists first issued the alert late on Monday. Since then plumes reached as high as 24,000 feet (7,315 meters) on Tuesday morning.

Plumes are created when lava bursts from the crater of the 8,261-foot (2,517-meter) volcano, then falls back on glacier ice, Coombs said.

"Right now, with the weather clear, it's just putting on a good show," Coombs said. "We're getting a lot of pilot reports and a lot of good photos, so we're able to keep a good eye on it."

Pavlof lies below a route frequently used by jetliners flying between North America and Asia, but those planes generally fly at elevations of 30,000 feet (9,144 meters) and likely would be unaffected by ash at lower elevations, observatory scientists have said.

Earthquakes rock Iceland volcano

Earthquakes are rocking Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano, adding to concerns that magma movements may trigger an eruption that could hinder air traffic.

Iceland's Met Office says two earthquakes measuring over magnitude 5 shook the volcano under the vast Vatnajokull glacier on Wednesday. Some 500 quakes have hit the area since midnight.

Iceland's aviation alert level remains at orange, the second highest. On Sunday, the Met Office lowered the alert level, saying there was no sign of an imminent eruption at Bardarbunga.

In 2010, Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano erupted and sparked off a week of international aviation chaos. Some 100,000 flights were cancelled after aviation officials closed Europe's air space for five days out of fear that volcanic ash could harm jet engines.

Volcano erupts in PNG, spewing ash and rock: officials
8/29/14

A volcano erupted Friday in eastern Papua New Guinea, spewing rocks and ash into the air, forcing the evacuation of local communities and international flights to be re-routed, officials said.

Mount Tavurvur, which destroyed the town of Rabaul when it erupted simultaneously with nearby Mount Vulcan in 1994, rumbled to life early in the morning on the tip of the remote island of New Britain.

"The eruption started slow and slowly developed in a Strombolian (low level) eruption with incandescent projections accompanied by explosion noises and ongoing loud roaring and rumbling noises," the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory said.

The Australian government issued a warning against travelling to the area, while flag carrier Qantas re-routed some flights to avoid the ash cloud.

"Authorities have evacuated communities close to the volcano. Residents of Rabaul town have been advised to remain indoors to avoid falling ash," Canberra said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Iceland volcano fires up again prompting red alert

Lava fountains danced along a lengthy volcanic fissure near Iceland's subglacial Bardarbunga volcano today, prompting authorities to raise the aviation warning code to the highest level and close the surrounding airspace. No volcanic ash has been detected, however, and the Civil Protection Department said all Icelandic airports remained open.

Warning issued to rural area near lava flowing from Hawaii volcano
9/4/14

HONOLULU - The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory issued a warning Thursday to a rural community in the path of a lava flow on Hawaii's Big Island, as the molten rock moved to within a mile of homes.

Observatory scientists said lava from the Kilauea volcano could reach the Kaohe Homesteads in five to seven days if it continues advancing through cracks in the earth.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Darryl Oliveira said the agency has not yet ordered an evacuation. But Mayor Billy Kenoi is declaring an emergency, which will allow authorities to restrict access to roadways so residents can leave safely if an evacuation becomes necessary.

"We are taking this step to ensure our residents have time to prepare their families, their pets, and their livestock for a safe and orderly evacuation from Ka'ohe in the event the flow continues to advance," Mayor Kenoi said.

The observatory said the lava has been advancing about 800 feet per day since July 10.

The Kilauea volcano has been continuously erupting since 1983, but new vents - or points where lava reaches the surface - have opened up periodically. The lava normally doesn't approach homes, but it has wiped out neighborhoods in the past.

The emergency declaration came immediately after USGS geologist Jim Kauahikaua, of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, raised the lava threat to a warning, meaning a hazardous lava flow is imminent, underway or suspected, CBS News affiliate KGMB reported.

Scientists have been closely monitoring the June 27 lava flow, named for the date it began erupting from a new vent. Civil defense officials last month met with community members to inform them about the threat and discuss evacuation plans.

Most of the lava flows from Kilauea's east rift zone have pushed south, but this recent flow is moving northeast, which is unusual but not unprecedented, according to the observatory.

Jim Kauahikaua, the observatory's scientist-in-charge, has said the current flow is being channeled by two previous flows, which makes it move faster.

It can be difficult to forecast the flow's exact path because it can be affected by subtle variations in topography, changes in lava volume and where and how lava enters or exits ground cracks along the rift zone, the observatory said.

Holuhraun lava heading for glacial river
Fyrst birt: 06.09.2014 15:05, Síðast uppfært: 06.09.2014 15:07

Within 24 hours, lava flowing from the Holuhraun fissure will enter the one of the branches of Jokulsa a Fjollum glacial river, if the advancement rate remains the same, says volcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarson. Volcanic activity in Holuhraun has not diminished since yesterday.

"The lava field has been advancing towards the westernmost outlet of Jokulsa a Fjollum glacial river, with a rate of about 40 metres per hour," says Thordarson, who is observing the eruption in Holuhraun along with collagues from the University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences and the Icelandic Met Office.

"If the lava flow remains steady, we should see the lava entering the riverbed sometime in the afternoon tomorrow," he says. "I do not expect much explosive activity, but we should however see some violent magna/water interaction when the lava meets the glacial runoff."

The glacial river runs from the Dyngjujokull outlet glacier in several branches; the branch which the lava is heading for is one of the larger ones.

According to the most recent status report from the Civil Protection Agency´s Scientific Advisory Board, the volcanic activity in Holuhraun has remained steady. The main eruption is at the fissure which opened last Sunday; less so in the smaller fissure to the south, which started erupting early yesterday morning.

Seismic activity has decreased since yesterday, with appr. 90 earthquakes detected since midnight. As before, the strongest events are happening in the Bardarbunga caldera; at 05,40 GMT a magnitude 5 earthquake occurred in the caldera. At least 14 earthquakes of magnitudes greater than 5 have been located since 16 of August.

(Volcanologist Thorvaldur Thordarsson, at Askja, near the Holuhraun eruption)

During the interview with RUV today, Dr. Thordarson was at the newest fissure, which opened yesterday morning. "The activity there is fairly low. Lava is coming from a 100 - 150 metre long part of the fissure, with small lava fountains visible."
