Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy Linked to Autism

Women in a new study who took antidepressants during their second and third trimesters of pregnancy showed an 87 percent increased risk of having a child with an autism spectrum disorder, compared with women who did not take medications for depression while expecting.

The researchers also found that mothers who used a certain class of antidepressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), had more than double the risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to the study published today (Dec. 14) in the journal JAMA Pediatrics. ASD is a group of conditions that includes autism, Asperger syndrome or other pervasive developmental disorders.

The findings suggest that using antidepressants, especially SSRIs, during the second and third trimester of pregnancy increases the risk of having a child with autism, said study author Anick Berard, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Montreal, who specializes in drug use during pregnancy. Some SSRIs that may be used during pregnancy include Zoloft, Prozac and Celexa.

Previous studies have shown that having depression itself may increase the risk of  autism. But the new study showed that the increase in the risk of having a child with autism that is linked to antidepressants is above and beyond the increase in risk of autism that is associated with maternal depression, Berard said. In the new study, depression in moms was associated with a 20 percent increased risk of autism, she said. [Beyond Vaccines: 5 Things that Might Really Cause Autism]

The analysis also found that women who were prescribed more than one class of antidepressants during the last six months of pregnancy were more than four times more likely to have a child with autism, compared with women who did not take antidepressants while pregnant.

Antidepressants are one of the most frequently used medications during pregnancy, with an estimated 7 to 13 percent of American women taking them while pregnant, according to one study.

Of the previous studies that have looked for a link between the development of autism in children and antidepressant use during pregnancy, some — but not all — have found that there is an association. This new study is one of the largest to show this association, according to the researchers.

“This study is the first to quantify autism risk based on the class of antidepressants used by a woman during pregnancy, and the first to find an increased risk with SSRIs mostly,” Berard told Live Science.

Depression during pregnancy

In an editorial accompanying the study that was published in the same issue of JAMA Pediatrics, Dr. Bryan King, a child psychiatrist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, wrote that the increasing prevalence of autistic spectrum disorders have led researchers to a “search for explanations, particularly among environmental factors."

And in the ongoing search for environmental contributions to the risk of ASD, gestational exposures are increasing as an area of focus, said King, who was not involved in the research.

Although the exact cause of autism is not yet known, there is probably a strong genetic factor involved, but exposure to certain factors in the environment may also play a role, she said.

Exposure to an antidepressant during in utero development is one such factor. In the new study, the researchers analyzed data collected from all 145,500 pregnancies that occurred in the Canadian province of Quebec over the 20-year period between January 1998 and December 2009, in which mothers had a full-term pregnancy and gave birth to only one baby.

The researchers followed up with the children until age 10; there were 1,054 children who were diagnosed with ASD.

Using information gathered from hospital records in Quebec, as well as a prescription drug database and a database that showed physician visits, the researchers looked at whether the women in the study had filled a prescription for antidepressants at any time during their pregnancy, or one month before conception.

The analysis found that about 4,700 infants, or 3.2 percent of babies, were exposed to antidepressants at some point during their mothers’ pregnancies. Among these babies, 46 developed autism.

But the researchers found that only a mother’s use of antidepressants during the second or third trimester was associated with a greater risk of autism in children. There was no increase in ASD risk that was linked to using these medications during early pregnancy.

Study: Alarming Increase in US Adult Prescription Drug Use
12/1/15

We Take Too Many Prescription Drugs

by Dr. Brownstein
Holistic Medicine

We take too many prescription drugs.  A study in JAMA(2015:314(17):1818-31. Nov. 3, 2015) was titled, “Trends in prescription drug use among adults in the U.S. from 1999-2012.”  The authors used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) which included 37,959 adults.  The authors found an increase in overall use of prescription drugs among US adults between 1999 and 2012.

In 1999, 51% of U.S. adults reported using any prescription drugs and 59% reporting use in 2012.  That  is a 16% increase.  The prevalence of polypharmacy (>5 prescription drugs) increased from 9.2% in 1999 to 15% in 2012—a 64% increase.  The prevalence of drug use increased in 11 drug classes included cholesterol-lowering agents, antidepressants, and prescription-proton pump inhibitors.

Comment:  There are two major reasons we are experiencing an increase in prescription drug use.  The first is direct-to-consumer advertising.  These are the drug ads we all see on television and in print.  We are only one of two countries that allow direct-to-consumer advertising.  Studies have shown that the marketing of drugs to consumers results in more prescriptions and greater profits for Big Pharma.  Direct-to-consumer advertising should be stopped.

The second reason we are seeing a marked increase in prescribing patterns is due to how doctors are educated.  In medical school, when evaluating a patient, I was trained to make a diagnosis and prescribe a drug (or drugs) to treat that diagnosis.  I was taught that nearly every complaint could be managed with a drug.  That would be fine if the drug treated the underlying cause of the illness.  However, the opposite is true:  Most drugs—over 95% (my estimate)–do not treat the underlying cause of an illness.  Nearly all prescription drugs treat the symptoms of a disease.

The most upsetting part of this study was the polypharmacy aspect.  The researchers reported that 15% of Americans use at least five prescription drugs.  Folks, this is a disaster.   Where are the studies that show it is safe to take five or more prescription medications at one time?  There aren’t any.

Perhaps the increased use in prescription medications resulted in better health outcomes.  If you believe that, I may have some swampland in Florida for you!  In every health indicator the World Health Organization tracks we finish last or near last among every Western country.  We don’t live as long as other Western people and we have more chronic illness.   Things are getting worse for us, not better.  And, we spend nearly 20% of our GNP on health care–over two-fold higher than any other Western country.

Clearly taking more drugs is not the answer.

What is the answer?  The answer is to educate yourself before taking a prescription medication.  Ultimately, you are responsible for every drug you put in your body.   The patients that get the best results are the patients who take an active role in their health care decisions.  You should study how the drug works and see if there are natural alternatives available to you.   I feel that it is best to work with a holistic health care practitioner who is knowledgeable about drug and non-drug therapies.

I wrote my book, Drugs That Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do, to educate the reader about the problems with the most commonly prescribed prescription medications and what natural therapies may be used instead.  The classes of medications that I cover in this book include:

Antacid Drugs (Proton Pump Inhibitors)
Antidepressant Drugs
Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Cholesterol-lowering Drugs
Diabetes Drugs
Osteoporotic drugs
Synthetic Hormones
If you are taking too many drugs, don’t allow yourself to feel overwhelmed.  Start to educate yourself about the drugs and see if they are right for you.  Most of all, ask questions about any drug therapy you are prescribed.

America's hidden epidemic: food addiction

Katie Couric hosts a panel on food addiction with tennis champion Monica Seles, interventionist Brad Lamm and Yahoo Finance Markets Correspondent Nicole Sinclair

You may have heard the word "bingeing" used casually. People binge on food, alcohol, or even a series on Netflix (NFLX). But Binge Eating Disorder, or B.E.D., is the most common eating disorder in the US. It impacts almost 3 million Americans, making it more common than anorexia and bulimia combined.

And it may be vastly underreported.

B.E.D. was only recognized as an official disorder in 2013, which is when it was added to the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

For years, eating disorders were classified into one of three groups—anorexia, bulimia, and “eating disorder not otherwise specified,” making it difficult for individuals with B.E.D. to seek treatment covered by insurance.

B.E.D. includes bingeing on average at least once a week for three months and feeling that one’s eating is out of control during a binge. Individuals with B.E.D. don’t routinely try to “undo” their excessive eating with extreme actions like throwing up or over-exercising.

While the exact cause of B.E.D. is unknown, certain theories suggest that adults with the disease may have differences in brain chemistry that could reduce activity in impulse control-related parts of the brain, increasing the “wanting”of a particular food. There is evidence that family history and certain life experiences may also play a role.

The food industry—including names like Mondelez (MDLZ), Coca-Cola (KO), and General Mills (GIS)—has come under fire for the role it plays in making food more addictive as well, including investing in recipes that keep consumers wanting more.

On Thursday, Philadelphia passed a sugar tax. Several studies have related sugar addiction to more commonly-discussed addictive substances, including ****. But analysts have included that sugar taxes wouldn’t impact the overall growth of the sugar industry, especially from developing regions with growing middle classes, like Brazil and China.

B.E.D. has also received more focus in recent years, especially as one-third of Americans are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Global News Anchor Katie Couric hosted a panel on B.E.D. to discuss some of the most important aspects of the disease.

Monica Seles became the youngest number 1 tennis player in the world at age 17 and won 9 Grand Slam championships throughout her career, yet she struggled with binge eating disorder over the course of her career. She’s been outspoken about her struggles with binge eating disorder throughout her successful tennis career and joined Couric to discuss her journey.

ABC News Correspondent Mara Schiavocampo also shared her story on her struggle with B.E.D. before losing 90 pounds.

Brad Lamm, an interventionist who founded one of the few treatment clinics for the disorder, Breathe Life Healing Centers, discussed the scope of the disease and treatment remedies.

And I discussed how the industry may have contributed to the problem and the role insurance companies are playing.

http://www.spring.org.uk/2016/05/empathy-killed-popular-painkiller.php
Empathy Is Killed By Popular Painkiller Found In 600 Different Drugs

Every week almost one-quarter of Americans use this drug.

Acetaminophen — commonly known as Tylenol in the US and paracetamol elsewhere — reduces people’s empathy for the pain of others, new research finds.

Acetaminophen is an ingredient in over 600 different medications, including being the main constituent of Tylenol.

The ubiquitous painkiller does not just kill pain, it also kills our fellow-feeling.

Dr Dominik Mischkowski, the study’s first author, said:

“These findings suggest other people’s pain doesn’t seem as big of a deal to you when you’ve taken acetaminophen.

Acetaminophen can reduce empathy as well as serve as a painkiller.”

Previous research has also found that the drug can reduce the positive emotions of those taking it.

Dr Baldwin Way, a study co-author, said:

“We don’t know why acetaminophen is having these effects, but it is concerning.

Empathy is important.

If you are having an argument with your spouse and you just took acetaminophen, this research suggests you might be less understanding of what you did to hurt your spouse’s feelings.”

The research was carried out on 80 college students.

Half were given a dose of 1,000mg of acetaminophen and the other half a placebo.

They then read a series of stories about people who had been hurt and were asked to rate their pain.

The results showed that those who had taken the acetaminophen consistently gave lower pain ratings for the people in the story.

The researchers carried out a couple of other variations to test people’s’ empathy for physical and social pain.

Dr Way explained the results of the experiment on social pain:

“In this case, the participants had the chance to empathize with the suffering of someone who they thought was going through a socially painful experience.

Still, those who took acetaminophen showed a reduction in empathy.

They weren’t as concerned about the rejected person’s hurt feelings.”

The researchers are now moving on to ibuprofen to see if the findings are the same.

The study was published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (Mischkowski et al., 2016).

http://www.naturalnews.com/055664_pharmaceuticals_water_purity_filtration.html
10/17/16
Experts: Our drinking water contains massive doses of prescription drugs

(NaturalNews) If you drink tap water, there's a good chance you're taking in all sorts of pharmaceutical drugs at the same time. Massive doses of prescription drugs pass through people's bodies and into the sewage system. These chemicals are very stable and make their way back into the water supply, unchanged. If you don't use appropriate, lab-validated water filters, you could be drinking a bizarre cocktail of drugs on a daily basis. Without even knowing it, you could be taking birth control, statins, SSRIs, psychotics, or any other popular chemical that is now pervasive in the water supply. These second hand medications could be interfering with your hormones, weight modulation, sleep patterns, temperament, cognitive function, ability to handle stress, etc.

We are all being drugged up through the tap
Not only are people dumping unused and outdated prescriptions down the sewage system, the pills they take also remain stable, even after passing through their bodies. With nearly half of men and women in England now taking prescription drugs on a regular basis, significant amounts are destined to remain active, ultimately resurfacing in tap water.

As more Americans increase their intake of pharmaceuticals, the amount left over in the water supply will only increase, adversely affecting others who choose not to take them. Antidepressants, painkillers, and statins are among the most popular prescribed medications and these all have known side effects. What happens when the human population is slowly inundated with a random cocktail of these drugs over time? What do these left overs do to the developing fetus? Are birth defects increasing due to silent pharmaceutical poisoning of their developmental process?

Skeptics have long thought that once the pharmaceutical passes through the body, it becomes inert. John Sumpter, professor of ecotoxicology at Brunel University London, says otherwise, "When they get into the water system they retain their powerful biological activity."

That "biological activity" may randomly interfere with the normal organ processes of unsuspecting people. On top of that, heavy metals in the drugs —which are often used as catalysts to speed up chemical reactions - can do further damage to people's organs and tissues.

Dozens of pharmaceuticals found in US rivers
A study published in Environmental Science and Technology Letters published water analysis data from 59 small US streams. In the water there were 108 pharmaceuticals. One river actually contained 45 different drugs, including muscle relaxant methocarbamol, opioid painkiller tramadol, and the anti-epileptic drug carbamazepine. In nearly every sample, the anti-diabetic drug metformin was found.

This pharmaceutically-tainted water makes its way onto crop fields as well. A study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that crops irrigated with wastewater passed on significant levels of the epilepsy drug carbamazepine. The chemical was detected in the urine of those who ate the crops.

"We don't know what it means if you have a lifelong uptake of drugs at very low concentrations,' says Dr. Klaus Kuemmerer, professor of sustainable chemistry at Germany's University of Luneberg. The negative effect could be more pronounced in children. Over time, a miniscule amount of several drugs could have an effect on adults too, especially due to intermixing effects. One of the most worrisome class of drugs often detected are psychoactive drugs. These are known to elicit unpredictable and suicidal behavioral changes in people.

The only surefire way to protect your body and your mind is to invest in a scientifically validated water filtration system that removes heavy metals and pharmaceutical chemicals from the tap.

Antidepressants in Pregnancy Tied to Autism

By anh-usa on May 12, 2017 Stop Crony Healthcare

A new study provides one more reason to think twice about these powerful drugs, especially if you are pregnant.

After extensive reports showing the negative effects of antidepressants, this new study, which looked at nearly 150,000 babies, has found a link between antidepressants taken during pregnancy and autism in young children. Children of women who took antidepressants during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were 87% more likely to develop autism than kids born to women who didn’t take the drugs.

This is just the latest reason to be wary of these drugs. We’ve reported previously that there is good evidence to suggest that these mind-altering drugs have played a part in a large percentage of the mass shootings that have occurred in the last few decades. Important research has shown major drugs like Paxil and Prozac to be linked with violence at a substantially higher rate than other drugs—users of Paxil are 10.3 times more likely to do violence to themselves or others, while users of Prozac are 10.9 times more likely to commit those acts. There is not merely an increased risk of suicide, which is now on the label; there is also a dramatically increased risk of violence toward others.

Meanwhile, much safer and more effective natural alternatives are rarely discussed or encouraged, because natural substances cannot be patented and sold at high prices. We’ve reported before about some of these.

Read the full story about the link between antidepressants during pregnancy and autism here.

BREAKING: Access To Medical Marijuana Hinges On Monday Vote!

Veterans' access to medical marijuana hinges on a Monday vote.

From Military.com:

A measure allowing veterans easier access to medical marijuana garnered bipartisan support in Congress last year and nearly became law. A vote on Monday could be the end of the line this year in another attempt to pass it.

The House Rules Committee will soon decide whether to allow Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., to offer an amendment to the Department of Veterans Affairs budget on the House floor. His "Veterans Equal Access" amendment would allow VA doctors to recommend medical marijuana to their veteran patients in states where the drug is legal. VA providers would also be able to complete veterans' paperwork required by some states to purchase marijuana.

If the Rules Committee approves the amendment, Blumenauer will offer it up later next week when the House debates the VA appropriations bill. If the committee rejects it, the amendment will die before an opportunity for debate.

"All we're trying to do is make conversations between veterans and their VA providers about all treatment options more accessible," Blumenauer said in an emailed statement. "We have Republicans, Democrats, and veterans behind this effort. Our hope is that the Rules Committee will take note of the overwhelming bipartisan support for this amendment, show compassion for our veterans, and give us a vote."

This marks Blumenauer's fourth time trying to pass the legislation.

The amendment failed in the House in 2014 and 2015, but passed 233-189 last year. It was also approved in the Senate, with a vote of 89-8. But during negotiations, the measure was stripped out of the VA appropriations bill by a conference committee established to reconcile differences between the House and Senate versions.

In 2016, the Veterans Equal Access amendment didn't have to go through the Rules Committee. The additional step this year is mandatory for all amendments to the VA appropriations bill.

"We feel this should be a priority, given the support for it in the past," said Nicole L'Esperance, communications director for Blumenauer.

The Veterans Equal Access amendment recently progressed in the Senate.

The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 24-7 on July 13 to include the amendment in that chamber's VA appropriations bill. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., and Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., offered the amendment.

"To not enable an individual to have the conversation with their doctor about the pros and cons of this potential remedy is to take away a dialogue important to a veteran's health," Merkley said. "It's important we pass this here and make sure it survives conference committee and goes to the president. Let's take this opportunity to stand up for our soldiers."

Daines' and Merkley's states are two of the 29 in the country that permit some form of cannabis use. Daines said the restrictions on the VA from discussing marijuana were a "violation of veterans' rights to talk openly and freely with their doctor."

"When a veteran in Montana walks into a VA facility, they can't discuss all the options available to them, but they can discuss them at the non-VA facility next door," Daines said.

More veterans are rallying behind marijuana as a potential treatment for service-connected health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain, and they see it as an alternative to addictive opioids.

The American Legion, which has a membership of 2.2 million veterans, decided last August that it would advocate to remove marijuana from the list of Schedule I drugs, which, along with heroin, LSD and Ecstasy, are designated as having no medical use. Reclassifying marijuana would remove barriers for scientific research.

The American Legion is attempting to wield some of its political influence with Congress, the VA and President Donald Trump.

(Natural News) Until recently, the average American life expectancy has gone up. However, it now appears that the toxic lifestyle embraced by much of the country is finally catching up with people, and those life expectancy gains have come to screeching halt. This might be bad news for individuals and their loved ones, but corporations are noting sizeable savings in the form of pension costs. After all, if employees die younger, a firm won’t have to pay them a pension or other lifelong retirement benefits for as many years.

After the American death rate increased for the first time since 1999 two years ago, at least a dozen major corporations have been able to reduce estimates for the amount of money they might owe retirees by more than $9.7 billion combined. Lockheed Martin alone was able to adjust its estimates regarding retirement obligations downward by $1.6 billion in 2015 and 2016, and firms like Verizon and General Motors are also reaping the benefits. This is based on an analysis carried out by Bloomberg of company filings. The American death rate is an age-adjusted share of Americans dying.

Meanwhile, a report issued in July by the social security chief actuary showed a slight improvement in its financial outlook as longevity gains failed to meet last year’s projections.

While other factors also play a role in the amount of money companies must shell out in pensions – including salary levels, health care costs, and asset returns – the notion that these firms are changing their adjustments based on the new mortality trend shows just how serious it is.

The death rates for people in the U.S. older than 50 have improved by one percent per year since 1950 on average. The long-term trend increased up to two percent in the years from 2000 to 2009 before stalling; the death rates only improved by about half a percent each year from 2010 to 2014. The life expectancy for 65-year-olds rose by a meager four months in the years from 2010 and 2015, which is half of the improvement noted in the years from 2005 to 2010. Moreover, the American death rate actually increased in 2015, and the death rate worsened for those over 65 in the first reversal for Americans of retirement age to be seen since 1999.

Experts say trend deserves urgent attention

Experts say that it is very concerning when the life expectancy of a developed country stops improving, and it’s even worse when it drops. Urban Institute Demographer Laudan Aron said that this trend reflects many of the “underlying conditions of life.” He feels that this dropping trajectory, particularly in comparison to those of other wealthy nations, should be considered among the most urgent issues on our national agenda.

Medications, pesticides, and poor diet to blame

It’s not surprising to see these trends given the unhealthy habits of many Americans. A paper from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America suggested that the mortality rate for middle-aged white Americans was rising largely because of suicides and drug overdoses. Antidepressant use has also been on the rise in recent years, and antidepressants increase a person’s risk of suicide. Drug overdoses, meanwhile, have also been climbing thanks to opioid addiction, with many people starting down this deadly path thanks to prescriptions for painkillers given to them by their doctors.

Cancer is another big killer in the U.S., and the toxins found in our everyday products could be to blame. The pesticides and herbicides sprayed on our produce, for example, are carcinogens, while many of the foods found in American grocery stores are full of dangerous additives. Meanwhile, the nation’s skyrocketing obesity rate due to unhealthy food and a lack of exercise is also sending Americans to an early grave by causing heart disease and diabetes.
