Two earthquakes rock Indonesia

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/1196602/1/.html

4/21/12

JAKARTA: A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia's Papua region on Saturday, sending panicked residents running from their homes and schools, officials said.

Authorities said there was no threat of a tsunami, and that the worst-hit area was the town of Ransiki in western Papua, where students attending morning classes ran from school buildings that shook for around a minute.

"We've had reports of mostly superficial damage to buildings, but two houses have caved and a church wall has collapsed," Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) official Yulson Sineri, told AFP.

"There are so far no reports of victims, but there has been some damage to buildings in Ransiki," he said.

The quake struck at 10:16 am (0116 GMT) at a depth of 30 kilometres (19 miles), 83 kilometres southeast of Manokwari, according to the USGS.

Authorities said the quake was felt in various parts of the West Papua province, on the western tip of New Guinea island.

The BMKG reported the quake's magnitude at 6.8, with a depth of 10 kilometres.

A hotel receptionist at the Mansinam Beach Resort in Manokwari reported a minute of shaking, but said she saw no damage.

"All our guests panicked and ran out of the building, but they went back after the quake was over and everything is back to normal as far as I can see," Anita, who goes by one name, told AFP.

The Papua region was struck by two mild aftershocks, while a 6.1-magnitude quake hit off Sumatra island, with no reports of damage or casualties.

Earlier on Saturday, a strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 5:14 am (2314 GMT Friday) at a depth of about 34 kilometres (21 miles), 427 kilometres southwest of Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Aceh province was shaken earlier this month by two huge earthquakes, triggering an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami alert.

At a magnitude of 8.6, the first of the two quakes was the strongest to hit since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 170,000 in Aceh. No major damage was reported.

O.C. quake was small, but it could make history
A 3.9 temblor centered in the southern suburb of Laguna Niguel could be the first measured on a little-known fault discovered 13 years ago.

By Rong-Gong Lin II, Los Angeles Times

April 24, 2012
The earthquake may have measured only a 3.9, but it still could make history in Orange County.

Monday's temblor, centered in the southern suburb of Laguna Niguel, could be the first measured on a fault discovered only 13 years ago and running along the coast from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa to San Juan Capistrano — close to the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

The little-known fault — called the San Joaquin Hills thrust — is similar to the fault that triggered the deadly Northridge quake in the San Fernando Valley 18 years ago.

Unlike the famous San Andreas fault, which can be seen on the surface, the fracture in the earth's crust that makes up the San Joaquin Hills thrust fault is entirely underground. Because there is no visible break in the earth's crust at ground level, the fault is perhaps more dangerous because it's unclear exactly where the boundaries are.

Scientists weren't aware of the blind thrust faults that triggered the 6.7 Northridge earthquake in 1994, or the 6.0 Whittier Narrows quake in 1987, until after the ground began shaking.

Experts say Monday's temblor should serve as a wake-up call, particularly to Orange County residents who mistakenly believe that quakes are more of an L.A. problem. Scientists believe that the San Joaquin Hills thrust fault is capable of generating a magnitude 7 quake or greater.

The U.S. Geological Surveyin 2003 conducted a scenario of such a quake and found it could trigger severe shaking on a large swath of southern Orange County, including Costa Mesa, Irvine, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano.

"If this morning's earthquake was on this fault, this is an example of what the fault is capable of doing," said Lisa Grant Ludwig, a UC Irvine associate professor who was the lead author of a paper in the journal Geology in 1999 announcing the discovery of the San Joaquin Hills thrust fault.

"I think there's an under-appreciation of the seismic hazard in Orange County," Grant Ludwig said. "There is a general perception in Orange County that we don't have as much earthquake hazard" — in part because the county has not suffered a major, destructive quake since 1933, when the area was sparsely populated.

Scientists discovered the San Joaquin Hills thrust fault after noticing evidence of ancient sea life in the hills. The researchers hypothesized that the land was once below sea level, but over hundreds of thousands of years the fault caused the earth to move upward, creating the hilly terrain.

In a 2002 follow-up report in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, Grant Ludwig found evidence of marsh deposits about 3 to 12 feet above the current shoreline. That suggested that the fault generated a magnitude 7 temblor sometime between the mid-17th and mid-19th centuries, which "may have generated the largest earthquake in the Los Angeles Basin since Western explorers reached the area."

There were no reports of damage in Monday's quake, which hit at 10:37 a.m. Southern California Edison said there was no impact at its San Onofre nuclear plant, which has been shut down since January because of safety concerns.

Quake rocks Andaman Nicobar Islands

4/25/12

A tremor with moderate intensity shook parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Wednesday.

No injury or casualty has been reported.

The epicentre of the tremor measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale was between Little Andaman and Car Nicobar, said disaster management director Ashok Sharma.

The earthquake occurred at 1.12 PM and originated at a depth of 10 km, he said.

It may be recalled following a massive earthquake off Sumatra coast on April 11, a tsunami alert had been sounded in the islands.

Earthquake swarm strikes off West Coast again

8 small quakes have hit in recent weeks

CBC News

Posted: May 2, 2012 11:45 AM ET

Last Updated: May 2, 2012 2:14 PM ET

Experts say a "swarm" of small earthquakes off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island are part of the normal seismic activity in the area, and they could continue for several more days.

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake that struck just after midnight on Tuesday morning was the eighth small quake with a magnitude between 3.8 and 4.7 to strike the region since April 22.

Pacific Geoscience Centre Seismologist Gary Rogers said the activity is focused along a 20-kilometre stretch along an area called the Raveer Delwood Fault, located about 200 kilometres offshore.

"In the very thin crust that we have out there off our west coast of Vancouver Island, it often fractures in a series of small earthquakes, usually about this size being the maximum."

Rogers said more small earthquakes are expected in the area over the next week.

"They often go on for days. There's been a lot of smaller ones, so eventually they'll wind down, but typically, what we've seen in the past is that most of these swarms last a few days to a week or so."

A similar but more powerful swarm that struck the same area in August 2008 included a magnitude 5.2 quake.

Experts have been warning a major earthquake hits B.C. every 500 years, and the last one was in 1700. But they said the swarm of small earthquake activity does not indicate a larger earthquake is more likely in the short term.

The last significant quake to rattle the West Coast was a magnitude 6.5 tremor centered that struck about 50 kilometres off the west coast of the island in September of 2011, swaying high-rises as far away as Vancouver, Kelowna and Seattle.

Earthquake Shakes Western Iran

05/ 3/12 01:25 PM ET

TEHRAN, Iran — A moderate earthquake jolted a small town in western Iran near the Iraqi border on Thursday, injuring eight people and damaging buildings, Iranian media reported.

The magnitude 5.5 quake hit the sparsely populated area near the town of Mourmouri, about 300 miles (480 kilometers) southwest of the capital Tehran, at 2:39 p.m., said the semiofficial Mehr news agency.

The report said the quake sent people rushing out of their homes in Mourmouri and that scores of buildings were damaged in nearby towns of Abdanan and Dehloran.

The area has experienced dozens of moderate earthquakes over the past few weeks.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, experiencing at least one slight quake a day on average.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam.

5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Israel

5.3 earthquake felt in areas from northern Israel to central Israel. No injuries. Epicenter believed to be in Cyprus.

By Elad Benari, Canada
First Publish: 5/11/2012, 10:37 PM

An earthquake rocked Israel on Friday evening, shortly before 10:00 p.m. local time, and was felt in areas from northern Israel to central Israel.

According to a Channel 10 News report, the police in the Northern, Central and Tel Aviv Districts said they received hundreds of phone calls from citizens who felt the earthquake. Local residents reported feeling objects and buildings move for about 15 to 20 seconds. There were no reports of injuries or damages.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was in Cyprus.

More than a 100 calls by concerned citizens were received in the northern city of Tzfat alone, the report said. The quake was felt even in Bat Yam, Kfar Saba, Ramat Hasharon, Ra'anana and other areas in central Israel.

Magen David Adom has sent reinforcements to its stations in northern Israel and is preparing for the possibility of secondary tremors, Channel 10 reported.

In February, a 3.1 magnitude tremor shook Israel's north. There were no injuries or damage following the earthquake. The epicenter of that earthquake was east of Lake Kinneret, and a number of communities in the area reported having felt the quake.

Experts have warned that Israel is expected to be hit by a major earthquake. Dr. Ephraim Laor, who headed the National Steering Committee for Earthquake Preparedness, told Arutz Sheva recently that each Israeli must prepare himself for a major earthquake that could hit Israel.

In February, school children around the country, from kindergarten age and up, participated in earthquake drills in their schools, practicing safe steps to take when the ground starts shaking.

Moderate earthquake kills one in Tajikistan
By AFPPublished Sunday, May 13, 2012
One man was killed when a moderate, 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck in central Tajikistan early Sunday, damaging several buildings.

The most damage occurred in the country's Garm district, where one man was killed by a collapsing wall, Nargis Nurova of Tajikistan's emergency situations committee told AFP.

Two buildings were completely destroyed, and several more were damaged, she said. The quake also caused a mudslide, burying alive herds of cows and sheep, she added.

The US Geological Survey located the epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 4:28 am (2328 GMT Saturday), at around 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of the city of Kulob at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Residents in the capital Dushanbe some 140 kilometres (90 miles) away felt tremors of about magnitude 4.0, a representative of the geophysics department in Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences told AFP.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.

Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia, is mostly covered by mountains, with earthquakes occurring on a nearly monthly basis.

Peru-Chile border hit by 6.2 quake, no damage seen

5/14/12

(Reuters) - A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook the border area straddling southern Peru and northern Chile early on Monday, but there were no reports of damage, the Andean neighbors' national emergency offices said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 41 miles east-northeast of Tacna in Peru, and 66 miles northeast of Arica in the far north of world No. 1 copper producer Chile.

The tremor hit at a depth of 61.1 miles, it said. The USGS had earlier reported two quakes of 5.9 magnitude had struck seconds apart, but later updated its Web site to show only one.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Chile, said a spokeswoman for Chile's state emergency office (ONEMI).

A spokeswoman for Chile's Collahuasi, the world's No. 3 copper mine owned jointly by Anglo American Plc and Xstrata Plc, said its operations had not been affected by the quake.

Union leader Manuel Munoz said the quake had however caused some rocks to fall on roads at the deposit.

In Lima, a spokesman for the emergency operations center of the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) said there were no immediate reports of damage, though an official at Peru's Geophysics Institute said electricity was disrupted in the southern Peruvian region near the border with Chile.

Quakes are common in Chile, which was hit by a devastating 8.8 magnitude temblor in early 2010 which triggered tsunami that battered the south-central Chilean coastline in a disaster which killed around 500 people and ravaged industries.

4.3 magnitude earthquake rattles east Texas

Published: 17 May 2012 08:14 AM

Related TIMPSON, Texas (AP) -- A moderate earthquake rattled an area in east Texas near the Louisiana border.

National Earthquake Information Center geophysicist Amy Vaughan says the quake happened at 3:12 a.m. Thursday and had a magnitude of 4.3. It was centered near Timpson, Texas.

Shelby County Sheriff's dispatcher Jacob Allen says the only injury reported they've received is an elderly woman who fell out of her bed and cut her arm. Allen says the quake caused broken windows and fallen dishes, but no major damage has been reported.

Vaughan says the quake was felt within 75 miles of its epicenter. She also said the same area was the site of a 3.9 magnitude quake on May 10.

SANTIAGO, Chile –  A strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off Chile's southern coast, but the authorities say it wasn't felt on land and discounted the possibility of a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake's epicenter was 336 miles (542 kilometers) west-southwest of Castro, Los Lagos. It struck Thursday evening local time off the coast of the Aysen region and at depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

Aysen Gov. Pilar Cuevas said that the quake "was not felt in Coyhaique or Puerto Aysen and the population remains calm."

The Interior Ministry Emergency Office said no damages to infrastructure were reported.

Chile's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service said the characteristics of the quake would not generate the conditions for a tsunami off the coasts of Chile.

5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes near Bologna, Italy

..

(Reuters) - A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Bologna, Italy, on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake, which initially registered at magnitude 6.3, was centered 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna in northern Italy at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, the USGS said.

The last major earthquake to hit Italy was a 6.3 magnitude quake in the central Italian city of L'Aquila in 2009, killing nearly 300 people.

In January, a 5.3-magnitude quake in northern Italy was felt in Genoa, Bologna, Turin and Italy's financial capital, Milan.

At least 7 dead after quake rocks northern Italy

Rome (CNN) -- A strong earthquake struck northern Italy early Sunday, leaving at least seven people dead, authorities said.

Two people were killed in a ceramic factory in Sant'Agostino di Ferrara, and one person died when a work shed collapsed in Ponte Rodoni di Bondeno, said Elisabetta Maffani, spokeswoman for Italy's civil protection agency.

In addition, a woman in Bologna died of a heart attack during an evacuation; a Moroccan national died when the factory he was working in collapsed; and a sixth victim was found dead under rubble in Sant'Agostino, Maffani said. The seventh was located under a collapsed house, according to Alessio Bellodi of the civil protection branch in Bologna.

At least 50 people were injured. Workers were searching through rubble for survivors in Sant'Agostino.

The 6.0-magnitude quake occurred just after 4 a.m. (10 p.m. ET Saturday), 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) outside Camposanto, northwest of Bologna, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

What is it with Christchurch, Chile, and Japan? They still get beat up on since they got big ones in recent years, but somehow the USA has remained unscathed during this time?

Christchurch has been rocked by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Sunday evening.

It follows a 4.1 magnitude quake four point one quake at 9.35am on Sunday.

The 4.8 quake was centred 20 kilometres east of Christchurch at a depth of eight kilometres and struck at 5.06pm.

The shaking lasted several seconds but so far there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

The chief executive of the electricity lines company, Orion, says there have been no reports of power outages.

Sunday morning's quake measured 4.1 and was centred 20 kilometres west of Christchurch at a depth of 10km.

The regularity and strength of earthquakes has continued to subside since the quakes felt just before Christmas which produced power outages and fresh liquefaction.

5/20/12

Aftershocks continue in northern Italy from a powerful, shallow earthquake on Sunday. The death toll is at least seven.

Two of the dead suffered heart attacks.

Dozens are injured and up to 3000 people are not yet able to return to their homes.

There has been widespread damage to historic buildings from the magnitude 6.0 quake and the continuing strong aftershocks.

In the town of Finale Emilia, a section of San Carlo church collapsed. It contained a painting by 17th century artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, who was known as Il Guercino.

The earthquake occurred shortly after 4am. It was centred near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po river valley, at a depth of 10km.

The tremor was felt as far west as Liguria, bordering France.

Death toll rises after Italy quake

 Updated May 21, 2012 11:25:49

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in northern Italy has risen to six, as strong aftershocks forced the evacuation of thousands of people.

The epicentre of the 6.0-magnitude quake was in the province of Modena, but it was felt from Venice to Milan.

It has left thousands homeless and reduced historic buildings in cities including Bologna and Verona to rubble.

The quake hit in the early hours of Sunday (local time) as people were sleeping, sending terrified residents running into the street.

"I am 83 and I have never felt anything like this," Lina Gardenghi said in the town of Bondeno, near Ferrara.

The quake was followed by a series of jolting aftershocks, sparking the evacuation of 3,000 people.

At least two of the tremors reached magnitude-5.1, sowing fresh panic, further damaging already weakened buildings and causing more structures to collapse.

The tremors were more deadly than any since 2009, when the central city of L'Aquila was devastated.

The powerful shaking was a first for the region in centuries — and fairly surprising to seismologists.

5/22/12

strong and unusually shallow earthquake struck northern Italy over the weekend, fracturing pavement, sending torrents of brick and rubble raining down from buildings, and killing seven people. The powerful shaking was a first for the region in centuries — and fairly surprising to seismologists.

ANALYSIS: Cultural Treasures Crushed In Italy Quake

Data indicate the magnitude 6.0 quake, which struck just after 4 a.m. local time on Sunday (May 20), just north of Bologna, was a thrust quake — the type of earthquake caused when two tectonic plates smash together — yet it occurred at a depth of just 3 miles (5 kilometers).

"It is kind of surprising that it's that shallow, because it's pretty far from the plate boundary," said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "Normally we expect things to get deeper as they move northward," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Shallow shaking

The quake hit about 470 miles (750 km) north of the plate boundary — the place where the two colliding plates meet — which runs along the sole of Italy's "boot."

It is here that the African plate is plowing slowly northward, crashing into the Eurasian plate.

Caruso explained that the shallower a quake, the more damage it can cause. "If a quake is 500 kilometers deep, and you're right on top of it, you're going to feel it a lot less strongly than if it's 5 kilometers deep," he said. "As the seismic energy moves through the ground some of it is dissipated."

ANALYSIS: Earth Moved - Why No Big Tsunami?

The strong quake rocked an area with a long history of earthquakes, yet one that has kept relatively quiet for hundreds of years.

"There has not been a whole lot of action in that area," Caruso said. "The fact that they do have records of earthquakes going back a couple thousand years shows this area hasn't been seismically active for a long time," he said.

Thousands of people were displaced by the quake, and many people spent the night in tents hurriedly erected on soccer fields.

L'Aquila and aftershocks

The most powerful quake to hit Italy in decades occurred in 2009, in central Italy, near Rome. The 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the medieval city of L'Aquila, killing close to 300 people and causing widespread damage.

After that earthquake, Italian officials put several Italian scientists on trial for manslaughter for not providing better warnings ahead of the deadly shaking, a move that has caused an outcry in the international scientific community.

The two Italian quakes were caused by different geological mechanisms. The L'Aquila earthquake was caused when massive rock faces jerked away from one another, where as the recent earthquake was caused by their collision.

Several aftershocks have rocked the affected region, and it's not clear if this recent earthquake is a harbinger of things to come.

"We don't know if this is going to trigger more activity in this area or not," Caruso said. "We would expect to see aftershocks in the area for a while." There have already been at least 100 aftershocks. (Video: How Earthquakes Lead To Aftershocks)

The shaking could continue for weeks or months, he said.

New Zealand's Christchurch shaken by 5.2 quake

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's second largest city Christchurch was shaken by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The government seismology agency said the quake was centered 10 kilometers east of the city at a depth of 11 kilometers.

The city was devastated by a force 6.3 quake in February last year, killing nearly 200 people, and destroying the central business district and making large areas of surrounding suburbs uninhabitable.

Media reported residents in some areas rushed into the streets, but there no reports of damage or any injuries.

The city has been hit by thousands of aftershocks since last year's quake.
