7 Major Earthquakes Strike Pacific In 96 Hours As Seismologist Warns Of ‘Catastrophic Mega Quake’ Coming

The accumulation of earthquake stress is going on everywhere. But where it will reach the elastic limit, we don't know nor also when. But what we do know is that it is happening everywhere.

4/18/16

At least 272 people have been killed in Ecuador’s biggest earthquake in decades as a 7.8 magnitude quake struck off the Pacific coast on Saturday and was felt around the Andean nation of 16 million people, causing panic as far away as the highland capital Quito.

“For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” Matthew 24:7 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: While the prophecy found in Matthew 24 relates primarily to people living in the time of Jacob’s trouble, we could certainly be witnessing the ramp up to that right now during the Church Age. One thing is for sure, there has been a crazy amount of seismic activity this month so far.

Vice President Jorge Glas said as well as leaving hundreds dead, more than 2,500 people were injured. The latest quake follows devastating tremors in Japan late last week when one, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, injured more than 1,000 trapping people in collapsed buildings only a day after a quake killed nine people in the same region.

Rescue crews searched for survivors of a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck Japan’s Kyushu Island, the same region rattled by a 6.2 quake two days earlier.

Around 20,000 troops have had to be deployed following the latest 7.3 earthquake at 1.25am local time on Saturday.

Roads have also been damaged and big landslides have been reported, there are also 200,000 households without power. The death toll in the latest Kyushu earthquake is 16 people and a previous earthquake that struck the area on Thursday had killed nine people.

7 Major Earthquakes In Past Week: Vanuatu, Indonesia and Yellowstone Deception

There have been other large earthquakes recorded in recent days, including a major one in southern Japan which destroyed buildings and left at least 45 people injured, after Myanmar was rocked on Wednesday.

Tremors were also felt as far as 500 miles away at the national park in India where the Royal couple Kate and William were visiting.

Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 7,262 people have sought shelter at 375 centers since Friday in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to do everything he could to save lives following the disaster. He said: “Nothing is more important than human life and it’s a race against time.”

On Thursday, The Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Hospital confirmed 45 were injured, including five with serious injuries after a quake of magnitude 6.2 to 6.5 and a series of strong aftershocks ripped through Kumamoto city.

Several buildings were damaged or destroyed and at least six people are believed to be trapped under homes in Mashiki. Local reports said one woman was rescued in a critical condition. Scientists say there has been an above average number of significant earthquakes across south Asia and the Pacific since the start of the year.

The increased frequency has sparked fears of a repeat of the Nepal quake of 2015, where 8,000 people died, or even worse.

Roger Bilham, seismologist of University of Colorado, said: “The current conditions might trigger at least four earthquakes greater than 8.0 in magnitude.

“And if they delay, the strain accumulated during the centuries provokes more catastrophic mega earthquakes.”

Tonga suffered a 6.1 magnitude tremor.

Thursday’s quake in Japan was followed by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake which struck off the coast of the southern Philippines.

The earthquake happened at 2.20am (Singapore time) off Mindanao island. source

http://dutchsinse.com/4212016-craton-plate-movement-from-west-to-east-over-1-hours-time/
4/21/2016 — Craton / Plate movement from West to East OVER 1 HOURS TIME

The North American Craton (plate) has been displaced from California to Oklahoma over the past hour (1-2pm CT April 21, 2016).

These earthquakes struck in succession across nearly 1,000 miles area in less than 1 hours time.  This proves earthquakes are related over a distance, and proves earthquakes can be forecast.

Recently, professionals have tried to DENY that earthquakes are related over a distance, and denied that one earthquake can cause another earthquake elsewhere.  Professionals have also denied that pressure is transferring along the edge of the plate from West to East.

Just this past week a well known Geologist on the West coast said earthquakes are not related, and called them “coincidences”.

Obviously, this new round of earthquakes proves the “professionals” to be 100% wrong.

The past 24 hours of earthquakes M0.0 and greater tells the tale of Craton movement from West to East.  Notice the M2.0 in Virginia on the East coast as well as the New Madrid (Tennessee / Missouri) area being struck by smaller movement as the plate adjusts.

Worthy to make note that the M2.0 earthquake in Virginia (East coast USA) struck very close to the 2011 M5.9 earthquake epicenter, which itself is next to Lake Anna Nuclear Power plant + Lake Anna Dam.

_______

The pressure transfer across the plate began with a M3.2 earthquake off the coast of Northwest California along the Gorda Escarpment.

Just minutes after the M3.2 struck NW California, a similar M3.4 earthquake struck Southern California near the Salton Sea Volcanic buttes.

A few minutes after the earthquake in Southern California, yet another similar M3.6 earthquake struck along the edge of the craton at the fracking operations in Oklahoma.
_______

All of this movement was expected, and forecast to occur in the most recent earthquake forecast video.

Earthquake in Japan dries up centuries-old Kumamoto water source

Kumamoto Prefecture (JAPAN) — For hundreds of years, the sacred Shioisha spring here has provided water for drinking and irrigation in this village in the shadow of Mount Aso. But the fountainhead, which gushed about five tons of spring water a minute, has dried up since the magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck the prefecture early on April 16. Its disappearance has local residents baffled. “I was absolutely flabbergasted to hear that Shioisha spring has dried up. It turns my world upside down,” said 95-year-old Natsuko Goto, who was taking shelter at an elementary school after the earthquake. “What will happen now?”

Shioisha spring is located on the premises of Shioijinja shrine. According to Sachio Hirose, the 63-year-old parish representative, there are many fountainhead springs in Minami-Aso, which has been dubbed “the village where water is born.” However, Shioisha spring is the one that has been worshiped by local residents as the sacred spring where the “god of water” dwells. Its abundant waters have been a blessing for local rice farmers.

Every year, the planting of rice seedlings starts at the beginning of May in Minami-Aso, but at the moment, there is no water to irrigate the rice paddies, casting a dark shadow over the village and its agricultural production. “The headspring had been gushing water out for the past centuries and sustaining people’s livelihoods,” Hirose said. “I can’t believe this is happening in my lifetime.” –Asahi

Ecuador: Strong 6.7-magnitude earthquake rocks country's Pacific coast

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake has rocked Ecuador's Pacific coast just over a month after a devastating tremor in the Latin American country which left 660 dead and 16,600 injured. The quake struck just 21 miles from the town of Rosa Zarate in the same geographical region as April's tremors, where tens of thousands are still working to rebuild their homes. Ecuador's Geophysical Institute recorded that the earthquake reached its peak at 2.57am local time and lasted for nine minutes before subsiding. El Pais reported that the Ecuadorian government has not announced any victims or casualties as a result of the tremors. The Tsunami Pacific warning centre has said there is no further risk of a Tsunami ...

Earthquake strikes off Indonesia's Sumatra, sending tremors as far as Singapore

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake off the coast off the Indonesian island of Sumatra early Thursday sent tremors as far as the neighboring country of Singapore.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which reported the earthquake at 6:56 p.m. ET, calculated that the quake occurred 56.5 miles west of Sungaipenuh on Sumatra, and 329.9 miles southwest of Singapore.

On December 26, 2004 a magnitude 9.3 earthquake off Sumatra set off tsunamis on the coasts of Indonesia, Sr Lanka, India, Thailand and 10 other countries, killing an estimated 230,000 people. The so-called Boxing Day tsunami was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

Reuters reported on Thursday that there were no immediate reports of damage or injury in Indonesia, while BMKG Indonesia, the country's agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics, said that there was no tsunami threat.

Early risers in Singapore took to social media on Thursday to say that they had felt tremors from latest quake.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/could-san-andreas-fault-strike-000000008.html
California's San Andreas Fault is definitely moving. Could an earthquake be next?
6/22/16

Scientists have detected definitive movement around the San Andreas Fault system in California. Areas of land surrounding the fault have been shown to be rising and sinking, according to findings reported by the University of Hawaii.

The study published in the journal Nature Geoscience found that parts of California surrounding the San Andreas Fault are symbiotically, if slowly, rising and sinking.

The scientists found that the Los Angeles Basin, Orange County, San Diego County and the Bakersfield area are sinking 2 to 3 millimeters a year. Inversely, Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, and a large portion of San Bernardino County — an area about 125 miles wide — are rising. According the Los Angeles Times, this range of motion is comparable to the combined widths of several coins.

Scientists and researchers have suspected this kind of tectonic motion for years but have never had the means to monitor it before.

“While the San Andreas GPS data has been publicly available for more than a decade, the vertical component of the measurements had largely been ignored in tectonic investigations because of difficulties in interpreting the noisy data,” Samuel Howell, lead author on the study and a PhD candidate at the University of Hawaii, said in a statement.

“Using this technique, we were able to break down the noisy signals to isolate a simple vertical motion pattern that curiously straddled the San Andreas Fault,” he added.

The capability to measure this kind of motion is groundbreaking and crucial to public safety. This tectonic motion and subsequent stress has the potential to unleash a potentially catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

However, experts don’t know when this next wave will hit.

“It’s pretty much impossible to say when the next one will happen,” Howell told the Los Angeles Times.

The state of California lies at the intersection of two tectonic plates, which puts it at a higher risk of earthquake activity. There are dozens of fault lines separating the two plates throughout the state and the San Andreas Fault is one of the most significant.

The fault line has been behind some of the most devastating earthquakes in the state. In 1906, a quake hit San Francisco, causing widespread damage to the city and killing at least 700 people. In 1989, the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake also struck the Bay Area, a product of the northeast span of the San Andreas Fault. The shockwaves caused upwards of $5 billion dollars in damage and collapsed portions of the Oakland Bay Bridge.

But the southern portion of the San Andreas has been quiet for a longer timespan. Records show that Southern California gets hit by a large earthquake every century or so. The last major seismic activity in the region was a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in 1857, which hit Fort Tejon and could be felt as far away as Las Vegas, 300 miles away.

Strong quake hits off Northern Mariana Islands in Pacific

HONOLULU –  Authorities say a strong earthquake has hit off the coast of the Northern Mariana Islands near Saipan in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Friday at a depth of 117 miles (188 kilometers). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there's no threat of a destructive Pacific tsunami and no danger to Hawaii, Alaska or the West Coast of the U.S.

There are no initial reports of damage or injuries on the Northern Mariana Islands, a commonwealth of the U.S. Saipan is the capital and the largest island in the archipelago.

"Voices under the rubble" after quake hits Italy; at least 38 dead
8/24/16

ACCUMOLI, Italy, Aug 24 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake devastated a string of mountainous towns in central Italy on Wednesday, trapping residents under piles of rubble, killing at least 38 people and leaving thousands homeless.

The quake struck in the early hours of the morning when most residents were asleep, razing homes and buckling roads in a cluster of communities some 140 km (85 miles) east of Rome.

A family of four, including two boys aged 8 months and 9 years, were buried when their house in Accumoli imploded.

As rescue workers carried away the body of the infant, carefully covered by a small blanket, the children's grandmother blamed God: "He took them all at once," she wailed.

The army was mobilised to help with special heavy equipment and the treasury released 235 million euros ($265 million) of emergency funds. At the Vatican, Pope Francis cancelled part of his general audience to pray for the victims.

Aerial photographs showed whole areas of Amatrice, voted last year as one of Italy's most beautiful historic towns, flattened by the 6.2 magnitude quake.

"It's all young people here, it's holiday season, the town festival was to have been held the day after tomorrow so lots of people came for that," said Amatrice resident Giancarlo, sitting in the road wearing just his underwear.

"It's terrible, I'm 65-years-old and I have never experienced anything like this, small tremors, yes, but nothing this big. This is a catastrophe," he said.

Accumoli mayor Stefano Petrucci said some 2,500 were left homeless in the local community, which is made up of 17 hamlets.

Residents responding to wails muffled by tonnes of bricks and mortar sifted through the rubble with their bare hands before emergency services arrived with earth-moving equipment and sniffer dogs. Wide cracks had appeared like open wounds on the buildings that were still standing.

The national Civil Protection Department said some survivors would be put up elsewhere in central Italy, while others would be housed in tents that were being dispatched to the area.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said he would visit the disaster area later in the day: "No one will be left alone, no family, no community, no neighbourhood. We must get down to work .. to restore hope to this area which has been so badly hit," he said in a brief televised address.

The quake hit during the summer when the area, usually sparsely populated, hosts large numbers of holidaymakers.

A spokeswoman for the civil protection department, Immacolata Postiglione, said the dead were in Amatrice, Accumoli and other villages including Pescara del Tronto and Arquata del Tronto. She put the initial death toll at 38, but said rescue teams had only just reached some stricken areas.

The earthquake caused damage in three regions -- Umbria, Lazio and Marche -- and was felt as far away as the southern Italian port city of Naples.

Death Toll Climbs to 120 After Earthquake in Italy
8/24/16

At least 120 people were killed in a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that struck central Italy early Wednesday as most residents were sleeping in their homes.

Workers continues to search for residents buried under the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings.

Officials say the towns of Accumoli and Amatrice appear to be the hardest hit by the quake, which struck at 3:36 a.m. local time.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who said he plans to travel today to the affected area, thanked the rescue workers and vowed a sustained national effort to find any survivors and assist the injured and homeless.

"No family, no city, no hamlet will be left alone," he said.

Emergency responders are facing power outages and ruptured gas lines.

U.S. citizen Michael Gilroy was with his girlfriend on the second floor of a three-story hotel in the town of Montepulciano when the quake hit.

"It was just before 4:00 in the morning," he said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "We gathered our stuff and ran out as quickly as we could with everyone else."

"On the way out, we saw a pretty big chandelier swaying from side to side, and I think that’s when we knew for sure," Gilroy added.

Gilroy said the destruction was devastating in Montepulciano, which is nestled atop a hill in southern Tuscany. He and his girlfriend have since left the town for Rome.

"It looks like there are multiple homes that have come down completely into the roads," he said. "These roads are very, very narrow, and the homes are built on top of each other, and they’re all brick, and when they come down, there’s not a lot of space in between."

The U.S. State Department has urged Americans in the area to contact their loved ones.

Tremors were felt as far away as Rome, more than 100 miles from the quake's epicenter.

In the town of Amatrice, the damage was so extensive that Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said, "The town isn't here anymore," The Associated Press reported.

The quake was felt across four regions of central Italy: Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo and Marche.

The central Apennine region, a mountainous area of central Italy, has had several significant temblors, according to the USGS.

In April 2009, a 6.3 magnitude quake near the town of L’Aquila killed at least 295 people, injured over 1,000 and left at least 55,000 homeless.

In September 1997, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in the area killed 11 people and injured over 100, destroying approximately 80,000 homes in the Marche and Umbria regions.

On Jan. 13, 1915, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake near Avezzano killed approximately 32,000 people.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Race for Survivors in Italy as Quake Death Toll Climbs to 267
8/26/16

Rescue workers raced to find survivors one day after a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocked central Italy, killing at least 267, injuring nearly 400 more and leaving thousands homeless.

A powerful 4.7 magnitude aftershock hit the area at 6:28 AM local time Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Wednesday's quake nearly leveled the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto. Of the casualties, 193 have been confirmed so far in Amatrice, 11 in Accumuli and 46 in Arquata del Tronto, according to Italy's Civil Protection agency.

Tremors were felt as far away as Rome, more than 100 miles from the quake's epicenter.

Italy's earthquake institute reported 150 aftershocks in the 12 hours following the initial quake, the strongest measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale
.

The Italian government allocated 234 million euros to the search and recovery effort on Thursday, as glimmers of hope buoyed rescue teams who worked through the night in a desperate search for people trapped under collapsed buildings.

Early Thursday, firefighters pulled a 10-year-old girl alive from the rubble in the small town of Pescara del Tronto, nestled in Ascoli Piceno province in the Marche region.

"You can hear something under here. Quiet, quiet," one rescue worker said, according to the Associated Press, before soon urging her on: "Come on, Giulia, come on, Giulia."

Cheers broke out when she emerged from the wreckage.

Meanwhile, another person was rescued by two men who spotted his hand in the rubble of his crumbled home.

"I can only remember that I couldn't breathe," he told The AP from his hospital bed. "I thought I was dead."

Still, the death toll continued to climb as more and more bodies were recovered. Aerial footage showed what little remains of the towns hit hardest by Wednesday's quake.

"Unfortunately, 90 percent we pull out are dead, but some make it, that's why we are here," said Christian Bianchetti, a volunteer from Rieti province who worked through the night in the small town of Amatrice, located in Rieti province in the Lazio region.

The damage was so extensive in Amatrice that Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said, "The town isn't here anymore."

Pirozzi also expressed concern for the approximately 70 guests staying at the town's Hotel Roma, only a handful of whom have so far been pulled out. The historic town's population swells with visitors in the summer months, likely adding to the quake's toll.

Italy's health minister, Beatrice Lorenzin, visited the devastated area Wednesday and noted that many of the victims were children.

Italian Premier Matteo Renzi also visited the zone Wednesday, greeted rescue teams and survivors, and pledged that "No family, no city, no hamlet will be left behind."

The U.S. State Department has so far not reported any U.S. citizen casualties, saying that the U.S. Embassy was working to verify the welfare and whereabouts of U.S. citizens in the area.

The State Deptartment advised U.S. citizens to avoid the region of central Italy near the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto, and Pescara del Tronto.

"Many roads have been blocked," the State Dept. said in a statement, noting that "numerous aftershocks have already been felt throughout the region, and there is the potential for further aftershocks."

The central Apennine region, a mountainous area of central Italy, has had several significant temblors, according to the USGS.

In April 2009, a 6.3 magnitude quake near the town of L’Aquila killed at least 295 people, injured more than 1,000 and left at least 55,000 homeless.

In September 1997, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in the area killed 11 people and injured more than 100, destroying approximately 80,000 homes in the Marche and Umbria regions.

On Jan. 13, 1915, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake near Avezzano killed approximately 32,000 people.

Tilting, sinking San Francisco high-rise raises alarm
[Jocelyn Gecker, Associated Press]
October 24, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Pamela Buttery noticed something peculiar six years ago while practicing golf putting in her 57th-floor apartment at the luxurious Millennium Tower. The ball kept veering to the same corner of her living room.

Those were the first signs for residents of the sleek, mirrored high-rise that something was wrong.

The 58-story building has gained notoriety in recent weeks as the "leaning tower of San Francisco." But it's not just leaning. It's sinking, too. And engineers hired to assess the problem say it shows no immediate sign of stopping.

"What concerns me most is the tilting," says Buttery, 76, a retired real estate developer. "Is it safe to stay here? For how long?"

Completed seven years ago, the tower so far has sunk 16 inches into the soft soil and landfill of San Francisco's crowded financial district. But it's not sinking evenly, which has created a 2-inch tilt at the base — and a roughly 6-inch lean at the top.

By comparison, Italy's famed Leaning Tower of Pisa is leaning more than 16 feet. But in a major earthquake fault zone, the Millennium Tower's structural problems have raised alarm and become the focus of a public scandal.

Several documents involving the downtown building were leaked in recent weeks, including exchanges between the city's Department of Building Inspection and Millennium Partners, the developer. They show both sides knew the building was sinking more than anticipated before it opened in late 2009, but neither made that information public.

In a February 2009 letter, a chief buildings inspector, Raymond Lui, wrote to the tower's engineering firm to express concerns about "larger than expected settlements." He asked what was being done to stop the sinking and if the building's structural safety could be affected.

DeSimone Consulting Engineers replied that the building had already unexpectedly settled 8.3 inches. But the engineering firm concluded, "It is our professional opinion that the structures are safe."

City Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who has convened hearings on the matter at City Hall, asked Lui why the building was then certified safe for occupancy.

"We felt they had it under control," replied Lui, now employed in San Francisco's public works department. He did not elaborate.

City officials, owners of the building's high-end apartments, its developers and politicians are arguing over who is to blame. Meanwhile, key questions remain.

"When is this building going to stop sinking?" asks Jerry Dodson, an attorney and engineer who paid $2.1 million in 2009 for his two-bedroom apartment on the 42nd floor. "That's something that no one has been able to answer."

On the sidewalks outside the Millennium Tower, engineers last month started working to figure out why the building keeps sinking and if there's a way to fix it. But the process, which involves drilling deep holes and testing soil samples, is expected to take several months.

The geotechnical engineer leading the operation, Pat Shires, said existing data indicates the tower "might" sink between 24 to 31 inches in total, but nobody knows for sure.

When the Millennium Tower opened, it became a haven for the city's well-heeled, and all 419 apartments quickly sold out. Tenants have included former San Francisco 49er Joe Montana, late venture capitalist Tom Perkins and Giants outfielder Hunter Pence.

The building has a 75-foot indoor lap-pool, a health club and spa, an in-house cinema, and a restaurant and wine bar run by celebrity chef Michael Mina. Penthouses have sold for more than $10 million.

The tower's troubles are apparent in its five-floor underground garage, where Porsches and Lamborghinis sit near walls bearing floor-to-ceiling cracks, many bracketed by stress gauges to measure growth.

Meanwhile, accusations and lawsuits are piling up.

Dodson and other residents blame developers for what they say is a flawed design. The tower's foundation, for instance, uses piles driven 60 to 90 feet into landfill, rather than the pricier option of going down at least 240 feet to bedrock.

Millennium Partners maintains its design is safe and says many San Francisco high-rises have similar foundations.

"We did this building the right way," Chris Jeffries, a founding partner at Millennium Partners, told a news conference. "The building is 100 percent safe."

Jeffries blames the building's problems on an adjacent construction site where a city rail terminal is being built. He says the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, the public agency building the $4.5 billion transit hub, dug a 60-foot hole to create a dry construction site and pumped out millions of gallons of groundwater that wound up compressing and weakening the soil under the Millennium Tower.

Transbay says the tower's "inadequate foundation is the sole cause of the excessive settlement and tilt." It released a statement saying the building had sunk 10 inches and started to lean before the agency broke ground in 2010.

It has continued to sink at a rate of about 1 inch per year.

"We are all living there and wondering about our safety," another resident, Nina Agabian, said at a recent City Hall hearing. "We've been told it's going to take years to solve this, and I don't think we have years."

Earthquake off the Pacific coast of Central America has been downgraded to magnitude 7.0

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us10007c4w#executive

https://www.yahoo.com/news/hurricane-otto-makes-landfall-southeast-nicaragua-180914140.html
Hurricane, quake hit Central America
11/24/16

Bluefields (Nicaragua) (AFP) - Central America suffered a hurricane and offshore earthquake at the same time, triggering alarm in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica but no immediate reports of any casualties.

Nicaragua was caught in the middle of both events, with Hurricane Otto, a storm packing sustained winds of up to 175 kilometers (110 miles) per hour at the time, plowing into its Caribbean coast while the 7.0 quake occurred in the Pacific Ocean, off its other coast.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega declared a national emergency to handle both potential disasters.

But hours later, there were no reports of any widespread destruction, only of fallen trees and electrical cables, and a few collapsed roofs from the storm.

El Salvador ordered residents along its Pacific shore to move inland. But it and Nicaragua soon lifted tsunami alerts they had issued as a precaution.

By nightfall, Otto was "weakening rapidly over southern Nicaragua," the US-based National Hurricane Center said in a 0000 GMT bulletin.

The Miami-based NHC said Otto's maximum sustained winds had slowed to 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour in Nicaragua.

In Panama, eight people lost their lives during the storm in recent days, three of them directly linked, Jose Donderis, director of the national civil protection service, said Thursday at a news conference.

The other five people died through acts of negligence or risky behavior, such as not following authorities' warnings, he said.

Otto's projected path was through sparsely inhabited rural areas in southern Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica. It was expected to weaken to a tropical storm late Thursday before exiting into the Pacific.

Satellite images showed Bluefields, Nicaragua's main Caribbean city, bearing the brunt of the hurricane, but there was almost no wind or rain.

An AFP journalist there said there was even some sunshine.

"We haven't lost any lives. Things are going well. We think that tonight (Thursday), people should be able to start going back to their homes," said a government representative in Bluefields, Lumberto Campbell.

- High vigilance -

In San Juan de Nicaragua further south, the town closest to where Otto made landfall, there were reports of strong wind and rain, with fallen trees and electrical cables, and roofs torn off -- but no deaths or injuries.

Neighboring Costa Rica, which had been fearing its first direct hit from a hurricane since records began in 1851, also showed little damage.

The government had declared a national emergency, closed schools, sent non-essential workers home for Thursday and Friday, and evacuated around 4,000 people from its Caribbean coast.

Vigilance remained high in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, however, given the risk of mudslides in coming days from the storm's rains.

In El Salvador, following the quake, officials scrambled to evaluate the possible damage. The task was made more difficult because some telephone lines in the capital San Salvador had been cut.

Tsunami alerts canceled following 7.9 earthquake off Papua New Guinea

(CNN)Tsunami warnings issued after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea on Saturday night have been canceled, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and New Zealand government said.

The quake struck in the ocean about 45 kilometers east of Papua New Guinea's New Ireland island, also known as Latangai, at about 8:51 p.m. (5:51 a.m. ET), the US Geological Survey said.

The extent of damage was not immediately known.

Alun Beck, owner of the Treehouse Village Resort on the island of New Ireland, told CNN he didn't feel anything and was setting up fishing boats to go shark fishing when the earthquake hit. He found out about the quake two hours later via social media and had not heard about major damage.
Hazardous tsunamis were initially possible though about midnight local time along some coasts of that country, as well as the Solomon Islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Indonesia, Nauru, Kosrae and Vanuatu, the PTWC said.

Magnitude 6.2 earthquake hits region in eastern Indonesia

Tolotangga, Indonesia –  The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake has hit a region in the eastern part of Indonesia.

The agency says the earthquake hit about 6:30 a.m. Friday in the Sumbawa region. The epicenter was about 30 kilometers south of Tolotangga.

The agency says the earthquake was about 72 kilometers deep.

There were no initial reports of injuries or damage.

On Dec. 7, Indonesia's Aceh province was hit by a magnitude 6.5 quake that killed more than 100 people.

The world's largest archipelago, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. A 2004 quake and tsunami killed a total of 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Aceh.

Chile earthquake: 7.1 tremor strikes off coast near capital Santiago

4/25/17
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04/24/chile-earthquake-71-tremor-strikes-coast-near-capital-santiago/

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck off the west coast of Chile on Monday, rocking the capital Santiago and briefly causing alarm along the Pacific Coast but not producing any serious damage.

The quake was centered 22 miles west of the coastal city of Valparaiso at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the sea, and about 85 miles from Santiago, the US Geological Survey said.

"It was short but very powerful," said Paloma Salamo, a 26-year-old nurse, who was in a clinic in Vina del Mar, just north of Valparaiso, when the quake struck.

People ran out of the facility carrying children and some headed for the hills when the tsunami alarm sounded, she said, but calm was soon restored.

Officials cancelled a tsunami warning that had been issued in Valparaiso after the Chilean Navy and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the quake was not expected to produce a dangerous seismic sea wave. The centre reported small tsunami waves of half a foot (15 cm).

Alaska Hit By 45 Significant Earthquakes Within 24 Hours As The West Coast Wonders If ‘The Big One’ Is Imminent

5/9/17

by Michael Snyder
EndOfTheAmericanDream.com
May 8, 2017

Within the last 24 hours, 45 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater have struck Alaska, and 25 of them were of magnitude 4.0 or greater. The worst one had a magnitude of 6.2, but none of the earthquakes did much damage because none of them hit heavily populated areas. But the reason why all of this shaking is causing so much concern is because the “Ring of Fire” runs right along the southern Alaska coastline, and all of the earthquakes except for one were along the southern coast.

After running along the southern Alaska coastline, the Ring of Fire goes south along the west coast of Canada, the United States and Mexico. What affects one part of a fault network will often trigger something along another portion of the same fault network, and so many living on the west coast are watching the shaking in Alaska with deep concern.

For a long time scientists have acknowledged that a major Cascadia subduction zone earthquake is way overdue, and when one finally strikes the devastation that we could see in the Pacific northwest is likely to be off the charts. In fact, some scientists believe that the coming Cascadia subduction zone earthquake could potentially be as high as magnitude 9.0…

That 9.0-magnitude quake could trigger a 500 mph wave and put 70,000 people in the “inundation zone” in serious risk. Depending on their location within that zone, Kathryn Schulz writes in her article, people will have between 10 and 30 minutes to evacuate.
