Fourth earthquake rocks East Texas

Posted: Sunday, May 27, 2012 4:00 am

By Glenn Evans gevans@news-journal.com | 0 comments

The fourth earthquake in 16 days hit East Texas early Saturday.

No injuries or significant damage were reported from the preliminary magnitude 2.5 temblor that hit about 1:30 a.m., said Larry Burns, emergency management coordinator in Timpson.

The quake was centered about seven miles southeast of town, near FM 1645 and Texas 87, according to information from the U.S. Geological Survey.

“One of the guys I work with, he told me it shook but it wasn’t like any of the others we’ve had,” said Burns, who was not in town when the latest quake occurred. “We’re up to four of them so far.”

There perhaps have been more than that, according to accounts collected by the Timpson and Teneha News, Mayor Debra Smith said Saturday.

I think they’ve determined we are up to seven in the last 12 months,” the mayor said, dating the first reports to July. “But some of them were smaller than the (Geological Survey) keeps up.”

Smith reported the most recent shakeup was less dramatic than a May 17 quake that recently was upgraded to magnitude 4.8, woke residents and was blamed for one injury in the northern Shelby County town of 1,166.

“I think some people felt it,” she said, adding she slept through the latest quake. “We don’t know if it was an aftershock or how they classify those.”

The first quake, on May 10, measured magnitude 3.7. The May 17 earthquake was followed three days later by a 2.7 tremor that struck at 1:28 p.m. one week ago today about a mile south of Timpson.

The May 17 quake, which was felt in Longview and Shreveport, was centered three miles east of town, while the May 10 shakeup emanated from a site four miles to Timpson’s northeast.

Since the quakes began, Smith said, teams from the U.S. Geological Survey and Stephen F. Austin State University have placed seismic monitors in two or three locations to continuously record underground activity.

Several residents expressed suspicions that mineral extraction could be a factor in the unusual seismic activity.

“It’s kind of unnerving,” Smith said. “Everybody I talked to said it’s too early to determine if there is any connection to the oil and gas industry and anything significant causing it.”

At least 7 dead after quake rocks northern Italy

Rome (CNN) -- A strong earthquake struck northern Italy early Sunday, leaving at least seven people dead, authorities said.

Reuters: More aftershocks hit Italy, thousands still homeless

Home / European Union

Rome. A force 4.0 tremor hit northern Italy on Sunday, one of the strongest of a series of aftershocks that have hit the area since it was struck by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake a week ago which killed seven people and made thousands homeless, Reuters reports.

The Civil Protection Authority said the quake hit an area near Modena at around 1820 GMT and checks for damage were being carried out.

Thousands of people are still accommodated in tents or other makeshift housing a week after the original earthquake, the most serious to hit Italy since the 2009 shock in L'Aquila which killed almost 300.

An almost continuous series of minor aftershocks has rattled the area over the past days, making it potentially unsafe for many people to return to their badly damaged homes.

Last Sunday's earthquake carved a swathe of destruction across the prosperous Emilia Romagna region, destroying or damaging hundreds of buildings including homes, factories and farms as well as historic churches and castles.

The government of Prime Minister Mario Monti has declared a state of emergency and pledged emergency funding of around 50 million euros.

Second big quake hits northern Italy, 10 dead

MILAN (Reuters) - An earthquake struck northern Italy on Tuesday, killing at least 10 people, damaging buildings and spreading panic among thousands of residents still living in tents after a tremor shook the region just over a week ago, destroying their homes.

Officials and a source from the Italian Red Cross said several people were trapped under the rubble of houses and warehouses in the Emilia-Romagna region. Police said 10 people were confirmed dead but the toll was likely to rise.

The 5.8-magnitude quake struck near Modena and was felt across much of northern and central Italy.

"The situation is very serious, some people are stuck under the rubble," Alberto Silvestri, the mayor of San Felice sul Panaro, one of the towns near the epicenter, told SkyTG24.

Prime Minister Mario Monti said: "I want to assure everyone that the state will do all that it must do, all that is possible to do, as fast as it can to guarantee the return to normality in a region so special, so important, so productive for Italy."

Seven people were killed in the previous quake on May 20 that had its epicenter not far from Modena.

That quake, which registered magnitude 6, destroyed hundreds of buildings, including ancient churches and castles, and forced more than 7,000 people to sleep outdoors in tents.

It also hit production of some of the area's most internationally famous produce, including Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Farmers estimated the damage to agriculture in one of Italy's most fertile zones at more than 200 million euros.

On Tuesday, officials said operations to rescue people from the rubble had been hampered by disruption to the mobile phone network.

"The town has been largely damaged. There are people under the rubble, we don't know how many," a police officer from Cavezzo told Reuters.

Train services around Bologna, near Modena, were disrupted, media said, and schools and other public buildings had been evacuated as far south as Florence.

"We felt a very strong tremor," said Raffaella Besola, a resident of Bologna.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of Tuesday's quake was less than 30 km (19 miles) from Modena, not far from where the quake hit just over a week ago.

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake was also felt through western Bulgaria on Tuesday, causing no casualties or serious damage, the National Geophysical Institute said.

The tremor had its epicenter near the town of Pernik, shaking buildings and causing residents to rush into the streets.

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook Bulgaria last Tuesday, centered about 25 km west of the capital Sofia. Damage was estimated at more than 20 million levs ($12.82 million).

Death toll rises to 15 in quake-struck Italy

http://news.yahoo.com/least-three-dead-italy-quake-091157395.html

A strong earthquake rocked northeastern Italy Tuesday, killing at least 15 people, just days after another quake in the same region wrought death and destruction.

Italy's Civil Protection Authority confirmed 15 people had perished and rescue forces were searching for four or five other people still missing after a series of strong quakes which caused widespread panic among residents.

Italy earthquakes will hit economy hard: business lobby

5/30/12

ROME (Reuters) - The strong earthquakes that hit the northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna in the past days will have prolonged economic effects that will worsen an already difficult situation, Italy's main business association said on Wednesday.

"The earthquakes in May, which had very serious effects on people's lives, will also have prolonged consequences for some of the most important industrial regions in Italy and for an area with strong manufacturing activity," business lobby Confindustria said in an economic report.

"This can only worsen an already very difficult situation," it said.

Emilia Romagna, one of Italy' richest and most productive regions, was hit by a deadly magnitude 5.8 earthquake and a series of aftershocks on Tuesday, just over a week after a force 6.0 tremor in the same region.

More than 20 people were killed in the two earthquakes which caused a swathe of destruction across the region.

Seattle Fault Zone -- 900-930 AD earthquake larger than previously thought

May 30, 2012

A fresh look at sedimentary evidence suggests the 900-930 AD rupture of the Seattle fault possibly produced a larger earthquake than previously recognized. The Seattle fault zone, a series of active-east-west trending thrust faults, poses seismic threat to the Puget Sound region.

The 900-930 AD rupture is the only known large earthquake along the Seattle Fault, making geological records of prehistoric events the only clues to the earthquake potential of the fault.

While a graduate student at the University of Washington, Maria Arcos looked at tsunami and debris flow deposits – both evidence of a paleo-quake – in the coastal marsh at Gorst, Washington. She also identified evidence of at least three meters of uplift that preceded a tsunami, which was followed by a sandy debris flow from Gorst Creek, and suggests that the 900-930 AD quake covered a greater geographic area than previous fault interpretations.

The revised height and width of deformation caused by the quake may influence current interpretations of the Seattle fault's structure. This study found a minimum of three meters of uplift at Gorst, which is double the amount of previous fault models for the same location. A broader zone of deformation, says Arcos, may indicate either a wider zone of slip along the dip of the fault, a shallower dip or splay faults farther to the south.

Italy earthquake death toll rises to 25

ROME | Tue Jun 5, 2012 10:47am EDT

ROME (Reuters) - The number of people killed in two earthquakes that struck northern Italy in May rose to 25 on Tuesday, as aftershocks continued to spread fear among residents in the area.

The latest victim was a woman admitted to hospital after being injured in the second of two deadly tremors to strike the area in just over a week, health authorities in Bologna said.

A man, also seriously injured by the second tremor, remains in hospital and his life is in danger, the authorities said.

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake on May 20 was followed by a similar-size quake nine days later, destroying businesses and making thousands homeless.

The quake was the most deadly to strike Italy since 2009 when a tremor partially destroyed the central city of L'Aquila killing about 300 people.

The epicenter of the latest quake lies to the north of the city of Modena in what is one of the most productive regions of Italy.

Damages have been estimated at around 5 billion euros but could be higher as tremors continue to shake buildings in the area, preventing any resumption of reconstruction work.

Mayo, Ireland earthquake surprises geologists

A LEADING seismologist has said yesterday’s earthquake off the west coast was “unexpected” and poses “very interesting questions for geologists”.

The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of four on the Richter scale, was recorded as 60km west of Belmullet, Co Mayo, at a depth of 3km, at 8.58am. It was the largest local seismic event ever recorded, according to Tom Blake of the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) and the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies.

It was also the second-largest local earthquake on record in either Britain or Ireland, he said – the first being of 5.4 magnitude on July 19th, 1984, off the west coast of Wales and felt in Waterford and Wicklow.

A 2.7 magnitude tremor was recorded in Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare, in May 2010.

The Irish Coast Guard recorded instances of structural damage to houses in Erris, Co Mayo, yesterday and the British Geological Survey said the impact was felt in Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

The Geological Survey of Ireland said earthquakes of this magnitude at this depth were “not very unusual although not common”.

However, Mr Blake said that while the earthquake was classified as “moderate”, it was “significant” in that it challenged existing information about seismic activity off the west coast.

AN earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 was recorded between Tamworth and Gunnedah tonight.
Emergency services received phone calls from areas including Tamworth, Gunnedah and Maules Creek from about 9.30pm reporting that the ground moved and buildings rattled.

No one has been reported injured and there have been no reports of damage.

There has been reported of sirens in Armidale.

Geoscience Australia reported a quake of 4.2 magnitude at 9.31pm.

Geoscience Australia said the quake could have been felt up to 76kilometres away and caused damage up to 6 kilometres away.

It shows there were two distinct tremors.

Geoscience Australia data shows it was the 10th tremor recorded in mainland Australia this week.

It had a depth of 17 kilometres.

Police media said they had received a number of calls from Tamworth residents who reported their windows had shaken and thought someone was trying to break in.

Earthquake Swarm Reported at Chile’s Tatara-San Pedro

6/7/12

Quick report tonight brought to my attention by Eruptions reader GuillermoChile. Apparently, the SERNAGEOMIN has been monitoring an earthquake swarm at Chile’s Tatara-San Pedro (also known as San Pedro-Pellado), possibly numbering in the hundreds of small earthquakes over the last few days. The reports are a little scant and the information coming from different parts of the Chilean government are contradictory: the regional governor of the area was quoted as saying that “it is of volcanic earthquakes, so we are on alert” while the regional director from ONEMI said “at first thought that we were facing a volcanic earthquakes, but known reports of the analysis has led to the conclusion that we were facing tectonic type earthquakes“. The article in La Tercera also mentions that the volcano hasn’t erupted in “decades” while the Global Volcanism Program’s entry for San Pedro says that the last eruption is “unknown”, likely in the Holocene (last 10,000 years). So, there seems to be lots of confusion (not to mention La Tercera calling the volcano “Catinao”). If this is renewed activity at the volcano, it is potentially the first in recorded history.

Tatara-San Pedro has been a focus of a lot of petrologic study, so any new activity would get the geologic community’s attention quickly. I’ll keep this updated with any new information as it arrives, but hard to tell what exactly is going on at the Chilean volcano.

Italy: Hospitals 'at seismic risk' in quake-prone territory

last update: June 08, 14:28

Around 15 percent of the country's hospitals were constructed before 1900, or which 74, or 9 percent, were built before 1800, according to data from the Italian Civil Protection agency, obtained by Adnkronos Health.

"The oldest hospitals are considered at seismic risk," said Giuseppe Paradiso, an engineer with Bari-based Gedi di Altamura construction firm. He said the type of cement used puts the structure at risk in the case of an earthquake because of "non-existing regulations."

"You built without thinking about the territory" he said.

Italy is one of the world's most seismic countries. A pair of earthquakes last month killed 25 people and caused around 5 billion euros in damage. More than 300 people perished when a quake struck the central Abruzzo region in April 2009.

"The older buildings were built with the seismic norms of the time. But today you need to make important changes to be in line with new regulations," said Daniela Pedrini, presient of the Italian Society of Health Architecture and Engineering.

Quakes rattle towns in Australia's southeast

Posted 9 June 2012, 13:43 AEST

Officials in the New England region of the Australian state of New South Wales are breathing a sigh of relief, with no major damage found from two earthquakes that hit on Friday night.

Residents were shaken when two magnitude-4.2 quakes hit within a few minutes of each other.

More than 400 people have reported feeling tremors or hearing loud noises. Many called police because they thought they were being robbed.

Gunnedah Shire Mayor Adam Marshall says he has never heard of a tremor in the region before.

"I guess no-one's really thought about checking their insurance policy for anything like earthquake damage," he said.

Powerful earthquake hits off northeastern Taiwan; no reports of casualties or damage

6/9/12

TAIPEI, Taiwan - A powerful earthquake has struck off northeastern Taiwan, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says the quake registered at magnitude 6.5. It says the tremor was felt throughout the island.

The earthquake struck Sunday morning at sea, about 42 miles (70 kilometres) east of the Taiwanese county of Ilan. Ilan is about 90 miles (150 kilometres) southeast of the capital, Taipei.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage.

However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

Powerful quake shakes areas of Greece and Turkey

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A powerful earthquake shook Greece's island of Rhodes and southwestern Turkey on Sunday. No deaths or serious damage were reported, but officials said six people were hurt in Turkey by jumping out of buildings.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute says the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck at a depth of 37 kilometers (23 miles) in the Aegean Sea at 3:44 p.m. (1244 GMT) Sunday. That is between the Greek island of Rhodes and western Turkey.

Turkey's Kandilli Observatory gave a stronger preliminary magnitude of 6.0, with aftershocks of 4.9 and 4.7. Areas of Turkey shaken by the quake included the popular Aegean resort town of Oludeniz, the Aegean port of Izmir, and the Mediterranean city of Antalya.

Police in Rhodes said there are no reports of injuries or damage.

No serious casualties were reported in Turkey either, but officials said half a dozen people who jumped out of windows in panic over the temblor were injured.

These regions of Greece and Turkey are in seismically active areas and suffer frequent earthquakes.

KABUL, Afghanistan –  As many as 100 people are feared dead in an earthquake and landslide that buried more than 20 houses in northern Afghanistan on Monday, officials said.

Rescuers have so far pulled two women's bodies from the rubble of the landslide in Baghlan province, said provincial Gov. Abdul Majid. The U.N. confirmed one other death and said houses were destroyed across five districts.

A massive landslide of mud and rocks buried houses so deep in the remote mountain village of Sayi Hazara that rescuers gave up trying to use shovels to dig through the buried buildings, said Jawed Basharat, a spokesman for the provincial police chief who was part of a team that examined the village after the slide. There were no visible signs of the buildings underneath.

"We need bulldozers or other machinery to remove all this earth and get the bodies out, or the survivors if there are any," Basharat said.

They knew how many houses were buried only from information provided by area residents, who said between 25 and 30 houses disappeared in the landslide.

An earthquake measuring a magnitude 5.4 struck the Hindu Kush region Monday morning, followed by a 5.7 quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Both were felt as far away as the Afghan capital, Kabul, where buildings shook.

Baghlan province's Burka district, the site of the landslide, is a remote collection of mountain villages. It takes more than two hours to drive the approximately 25 miles from the provincial capital of Pul-e-Khumri to the area.

The police led a team of rescue workers and medics from Pul-e-Khumri, but discovered on arrival that they could be of little use. The handful of people who survived the landslide had already been driven to clinics.

"The ambulances were there, but there was no one to put in the ambulances," Basharat said.

The U.N. said in a statement that it was working with local authorities to try to help in the rescue effort but did not provide details. Basharat said the police team was the only group to arrive on Monday, and they returned to Pul-e-Khumri when they realized there was nothing they could do.

3.1-magnitude quake shakes North Texas

Happened just after 2 a.m. Friday

Updated: Friday, 15 Jun 2012, 1:47 PM EDT
Published : Friday, 15 Jun 2012, 9:07 AM EDT

CLEBURNE, Texas (AP) - Experts said North Texas has had a 3.1-magnitude earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake happened just after 2 a.m. Friday.

USGS said the earthquake was centered 11 miles north-northeast of Cleburne, or about 16 miles south of Fort Worth.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

On Oct. 20, an earthquake centered in Campbellton shook the area in the early morning hours. It reportedly rattled homes and caused faint tremors in Downtown San Antonio.

Preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit at 7:24 a.m. in the area about 50 miles south of San Antonio.

According to The Associated Press, no injuries or major damage was reported. Many residents close to the epicenter apparently did not notice any tremors, near Karnes City. Yet small vibrations felt in San Antonio did cause occupants to briefly evacuate a downtown federal building as a precaution.

Earthquakes are not common in Texas, and according to the USGS, Texas -- along with several other states -- has not had an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 or greater for at least 30 years.

The USGS site indicates the state has seen only one historic earthquake, which happened near Valentine and had a 5.8 magnitude.

Before that quake, a small earthquake on April 25, 2010 awoke some residents in a Texas town near Alice.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit an area near Alice, about 50 miles west of Corpus Christi, around 9:10 p.m. Saturday. No damage or injuries have been reported.

But numerous residents felt the quake. The Alice Echo-News Journal reports that calls flooded the Alice Police Department in Nueces County and the sheriff's office in neighboring Jim Wells County.

A 3.8-magnitude quake was reported in Jim Wells County in March 1997.
