Hey BA! That's getting near you neck of the woods isn't it?

Cleburne is in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, but I'm in Denton county, which is just north of DFW(about 30 miles) - so no, I didn't feel it from up here.

But yeah, earthquakes in DFW are pretty rare, especially those above 3.5 mag. "Watch"

6.1 quake hits off southwest Philippines: USGS

(AFP) – 13 hours ago

HONG KONG — A 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the sea area off the Philippine island of Luzon early Sunday, US seismologists said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles) and hit at 6:19 am (2219 GMT Saturday) some 143 kilometres southwest of the city of Baguio and 181 kilometres northwest of the capital Manila.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire -- a belt around the Pacific Ocean dotted by active volcanoes and unstable ocean trenches.

In February, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake in the central Philippines triggered landslides that left over a hundred people dead or missing.

One fault line runs directly under Manila, a metropolis of more than 12 million people, and government seismologists have warned the city is unprepared for a major quake.

6/20/12

It appears Victoria has escaped major damage after an earthquake struck the state's south-east on Tuesday night.

The quake hit just before 9:00pm (AEST), with the epicentre near Moe in west Gippsland, about 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Geoscience Australia says the 5.3 quake had a depth of about 10km and rumbled through Melbourne and communities including Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Shepparton.

People have reported hearing a roaring noise, with reports of cracks occurring in the walls and floors of homes.

Victoria Police said they had received a number of calls in relation to the tremor, but there were no reports of major damage.

The Federal Minister responsible for insurance, Bill Shorten, says he understands it is the biggest earthquake in the area "in 109 years".

He says it will take some days to determine the full extent of the damage but in the meantime personal safety should be the priority.

The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) said they received 40 requests for assistance in the broader Gippsland area and parts of Melbourne.

The SES's Lachlan Quick says most of the requests for assistance came from areas near the epicentre.

"Most of those look like minor house damage. Cracked walls, cracked ceilings, I believe I've had one garage collapse," he said.

"We've also had some incidences of gas leaks which are a bit of a concern and we've urged people on those situations to vacate the premises until those situations have been rectified."

'Back-to-back earthquakes recorded'

Rahul Das
June 21, 2012

Muscat: Two back-to-back earthquakes were recorded closer to Oman by the Earthquake Monitoring Centre at Sultan Qaboos University in the last 24 hours but there were no reports of damage to property or loss of life.

While an earthquake measuring 4.8-magnitude was reported in the Arabian Gulf around midnight, the other was reported from southern Iran with 4.2-magnitude on Tuesday evening
.

Speaking to Times of Oman, Dr Issa Al Hussain, director, Earthquake Monitoring Centre, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), said that they record around 150 earthquakes from all over the globe every month.

"Locally we record around four to five quakes every month but most of them are weak and its epicenter is far away from Oman,-¯ he said. But given Oman's close vicinity to where the Arabian plates meet the Eurasian plates, how much risk does it pose to the Sultanate?

Magnitude-6 Earthquake Strikes Off Australia's Macquarie Island

(RTTNews) - A powerful earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck in the Pacific Ocean off Australia's remote and sparsely-populated Macquarie Island on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS reported that the quake struck at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles at about 3:30 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located some 14 miles northwest of Macquarie Island.

There were no immediate reports of casualities or damages, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is yet to respond to the tremor.

Macquarie Island is located in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, about half-way between New Zealand and Antarctica. Politically, it is part of Tasmania, Australia, since 1900 and became a Tasmanian State Reserve in 1978. In 1997 it became a World Heritage Site.

The island is home to the entire Royal Penguin population on earth during their annual nesting season. Ecologically, the remote island is part of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra ecoregion.

Since 1948, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has maintained a permanent base on the island. The population of the base, the island's only human inhabitants, usually varies from 20 to 40 people over the year.

Large earthquake felt across NZ

7/3/12

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10817223

A large earthquake has been felt across the North and South Islands tonight.

The 7.0 magnitude quake was centred 60 km south-west of Opunake at a depth of 230 kilometres, GNS Science said.

The earthquake was felt across the North Island from Taranaki to Bay of Plenty, down to Wellington and as far south as Canterbury.

The earthquake was heavily felt in Wellington city where many residents took to social media sites to report of a long, rumbling quake.

The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office has said there is no tsunami threat from tonight's earthquake.

A Fire Service spokesman said there had been no reports of significant damage yet.

"It is at a depth of 257 kms [the initial depth given by GNS], which means we are pretty lucky at the moment."

A small aftershock of magnitude 3.8 struck 15 km east of Christchurch just after 11pm.

Region's biggest quake in 100 years(New Zealand)

Last night's magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the South Taranaki Bight is the largest to strike the region in more than 100 years, GNS Science says.

The quake struck at 10.36pm, 60km south-west of Opunake in Taranaki, at a depth of 230km.

It was felt strongly around the west coast of the lower North Island, and was widely felt from the Bay of Plenty to Canterbury.

No tsunami was generated by the quake.

Waiouru resident Adrienne Murphy told the Herald it was the "biggest shake we have felt in years".

Residents in Wellington reported being startled by shakes, which lasted for about 15 seconds.

Some said the shakes were strong enough to topple household appliances, but the central Fire Service communications centre said it had received no reports of earthquake-related damage.

Wellington resident Sam Rowe said he felt the walls of his house shaking.

"It shook for about 5 to 10 seconds - things rattled but nothing was knocked over. It wasn't that severe ... and our power's still on."

Strong quake rattles central North Island

7/8/12

North Islanders were again rattled by a strong earthquake yesterday, but experts say the tremor was not related to a much larger quake four days earlier.

GeoNet reported a magnitude 5.7 quake struck 10km south of Turangi at 12.50pm. The quake was 90km deep and, though police said there were no reports of damage, some residents said trinkets had been smashed.

Earthquake shakes Victoria

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has struck Victoria this evening.

The quake struck in Moe, 117km east south east of Melbourne, at 7.11pm.

A number of Twitter users across Victoria have reported feeling tremors but there have been no reports of damage so far.

A seismologist with Geoscience Australia, Jonathan Bathgate, said the quake felt this evening was an aftershock from the 5.4 earthquake that struck 16km southwest of Moe last month.

"There have been in excess of 200 aftershocks since the June 19 earthquake," he said.

Quake rattles east coast(NZ)

A 5.8 earthquake was recorded 150km east of Ruatoria this afternoon.

But despite the strength of the quake – which was felt as far away as Whakatane, Opotiki and Wairoa – locals reported no damage.

The shake -which was centered off the coastline – occurred at 4.54pm.

It comes as a series of quakes in the central North Island saw the Volcano Alert Level at Mt Tongariro being raised on Friday.

GNS Science volcanologist Brad Scott told Stuff on Friday the increased activity ‘‘just means that something has upset Tongariro, and some subterranean process is occurring’’.

‘‘It may or may not develop into anything further,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s a little bit unusual,’’ but Tongariro was ‘‘an active volcano in an active geothermal system’’

Eureka Earthquake: Twin Quakes Shake Up Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- No damage or injuries have been reported after two earthquakes rattled the Northern California coast Friday night.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 5.1 quake hit about 78 miles southwest of Eureka at 6:52 p.m. Friday.

Then just after 11 p.m. a magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded about 62 miles southwest of Eureka.

A dispatcher at the Eureka Police Department says the quakes were felt in the community, but police had no reports of damage or injuries.

USGS seismologist John Bellini says the quakes took place in an area where there's a lot of seismic activity.

No damage, tsunami after 6.6 quake hits off Indonesia's Sumatra

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck off northern Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but authorities said there was little chance of a tsunami.

The quake was felt by residents on the island of Simeulue off Sumatra's northwest coast but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

"The quake has no tsunami potential," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. "Some people ran away from their houses. We don't have any house damage."

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a widespread, destructive tsunami after the quake, about 330 km (205 miles) southeast of Indonesia's Banda Aceh. It said there was a "very small possibility" of a local tsunami.

6 quakes in last week off southern Oregon coast

By KCBY NewsPublished: Jul 31, 2012 at 10:26 AM PDT Last Updated: Jul 31, 2012 at 2:00 PM PDT

GOLD BEACH, Ore. - Six earthquakes between magnitude 1.6 and 2.1 rumbled under the ocean less than 20 miles off the Oregon Coast in the last week, according to U.S. Geologic Survey records.

The most recent - and most powerful - hit early Tuesday morning.

And two quakes over 4.0 shook last week about 240 miles off Bandon.

Small quakes hit Oregon on a regular basis, both on and off coast.

Last Thursday, for example, a magnitude 1.4 shook 8 miles northeast of Springfield, and a 1.5 magnitude earthquake rumbled 11 miles east of Woodburn just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

But for residents of the Oregon Coast, earthquakes - and the tsunamis they can trigger - have taken on renewed importance since March 2011.

The earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan last year caused damage on the Oregon Coast and continue to deliver debris to Northwest beaches.

The USGS told KCBY News that the recent swarm of quakes pose little tsunami risk. The plates involved move sideways instead of up and down, and earthquakes under magnitude 6 are not likely to generate tsunamis.

White Island(New Zealand) showing signs of unrest

White Island volcano is showing signs of increased activity, GNS Science says.

The volcano, about 49 kilometres off the coast of Whakatane, is a popular tourist spot, but GNS volcanologist Michael Rosenberg says those visiting it should be cautious even though the alert level for the island had not changed.

"Eruptions can occur at any time with little or no warning. The recent changes in activity suggest that the hydrothermal system has become unstable, and as a result the risk has increased," Rosenberg said.

GNS Science has changed the volcano's code from a "normal, non eruptive state" to "experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels".

The volcano's lake level quickly rose by about three to five metres sometime between Friday and Saturday last week, exposing a "vigorous" flow of gas and steam into the air, Rosenberg said.

It has risen in the past, but took much longer than the 24 hours it took to rise three to five metres on Friday and Saturday, he said.

4.2 ‘earthquake’ wakes Kuwait
Salmiya rocks

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 2: An earthquake of 4.2 magnitude on the Richter scale that struck Kuwait 40 km NW of Salmiya at around 7.30 am Thursday was felt by residents in Salmiya.

Though no casualties were reported, some residents complained the quake mildly upset some of their household arrangements. There were a few broken cutlery. Some residents living near the Salmiya garden said they felt the tremor in two short spells in a span of a few seconds.

Most of the residents were asleep and came to know about it from neighbors who experienced the tremor. Melissa, a resident, said she first noticed tea rippling in the cup in her hand before she realized that the whole house was shaking a bit. “It was a little scary.”

Mujib said it was his first experience of a tremor and initially thought that he was feeling woozy. “It occurred as I was getting up after bending down to pick something up from the floor. I thought I was losing balance as it happens sometimes when you suddenly change positions.”

Thambi felt the quake on the street when he was returning after a short walk. “This is my second experience of earthquake, both were in Kuwait. This one was very mild. Last time, I felt the quake like a strong vibration lasting more than 30 seconds.”

Thambi faltered in his step when the quake occurred, but that was just for a second or two. “Soon after that, I saw a dog running wildly to and fro, barking intensely.”

Khalil Rasul was woken up by a book that fell on his head. But he went back to sleep only to learn about the quake from blogs later.

An online journal had earlier quoted earthquake expert and Assist. Manager of Kuwait University for Scientific Affairs Dr. Ferial Bu Rabee as saying that Kuwait may be vulnerable to a powerful earthquake that can reach up to 8 degrees on Richter scale.

The expert said that such an earthquake can strike southern part of Iran and thus impact bordering GCC countries. She further added that an 8.1 tremor on Richter scale hit the same area of southern Iran back in 1945 and caused huge tsunami waves that reached Karachi and Bombay which are approx. 1,100 kms away from Iran.

She warned that Bushehr nuclear reactor in Iran may be vulnerable if an earthquake strikes, such seen recently in Japan. She advised GCC countries to give up their ambitions concerning the construction of nuclear power stations, arguing that “they are time bombs that will destroy the region when the anticipated earthquake strikes.”

Los Angeles rattled by two 4.5 quakes within 10 hours

Aug 8 (Reuters) - A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck near the Southern California town of Yorba Linda for the second time in just over 10 hours on Wednesday, rattling the Los Angeles area, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The latest quake was recorded shortly after 9:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. EDT) 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Yorba Linda, an affluent Orange County community southeast of Los Angeles that was the birthplace of the late former President Richard Nixon and houses his presidential library and museum.

It was centered about 5.5 miles (9 km) beneath the surface. The earlier temblor occurred at about 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday in about the same area at about the same depth, and was followed by more than a dozen smaller aftershocks overnight, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The two 4.5-magnitude quakes were both felt as far away as downtown Los Angeles, about 35 miles (56 km) away, where rattling and rumbling was felt for several seconds at a time.

Earthquakes measured at 4.5, capable of causing light to moderate damage close by, are considered fairly modest seismic disturbances and are relatively common in Southern California. (Reporting and writing by Steve Gorman; Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Sandra Maler)

DUBAI (Reuters) - Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday and at least 50 people were taken to hospital, but there were no reports of any deaths, Iranian media said.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9. km (6.2 miles) at 12.34 GMT.

It said a second earthquake measuring 6.3 struck 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth. Three more lesser aftershocks have followed since then.

The second quake struck near the town of Varzgan, Fars news agency said. "The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear," it said.

Fifty people in the town had been taken to hospital, Fars said.

Other reports said the earthquake had broken telephone communications, making rescue efforts more problematic.

Iran is straddled by several major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent times, the last which struck the city of Bam in 2003, killing more than 25,000 people.

Iran earthquakes kill 153 people in the northwest

DUBAI (Reuters) - Two strong earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing 153 people and injuring more than 1,300 as buildings were reduced to rubble, Iranian officials said.

Thousands fled their homes and remained outdoors as at least 20 aftershocks hit the area.

Casualty numbers could well rise, Iranian officials feared, as some of the injured are in a critical condition, others are still trapped under the rubble and rescuers have yet to reach some of the affected villages.

Iran is straddled by major fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 which turned the southeastern historic city of Bam into dust and killed more than 25,000 people.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured Saturday's first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 km (6.2 miles). A second quake measuring 6.3 struck 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth.

Deputy Interior Minister Hassan Ghadami said 153 people had been killed and provincial official Khalil Sa'ie said some 1,300 had been injured, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The second quake struck near the town of Varzaghan. "The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear," Fars news agency said of the town.

About 210 people in Varzaghan and Ahar have been rescued from under the rubble of collapsed buildings, the official IRNA news agency said, quoting a local official.

"So far 73 bodies from Varzaghan and Ahar have been handed over to the coroner's office," IRNA quoted Bahram Samadirad, a provincial official from the office, as saying.

He added, "Since some people are in a critical condition and rescue workers are still trying to rescue people from under the rubble, unfortunately it is possible for the number of casualties to rise."

Photographs posted by Iranian news websites showed about a dozen bodies lying on the floor in the corner of a white-tiled morgue in Ahar, and medical staff, surrounded by anxious residents, working on the injured in the open air as dusk fell.

"I was just on the phone talking to my mother when she said 'there's just been an earthquake', then the line was cut," one woman from Tabriz, who lives outside Iran, wrote on Facebook after telephoning her mother in the city.

"God, what has happened? After that I couldn't get through. God has also given me a slap, and it was very hard."

Tabriz is a major city and trading hub far from Iran's oil producing areas and known nuclear facilities. Buildings in the city are substantially built, and the Iranian Students' News Agency said nobody in the city itself had been killed or hurt.

Homes and businesses in Iranian villages, however, are often made of concrete blocks or mud brick that can crumble and collapse in a strong quake.

Fars quoted lawmaker Abbas Falahi as saying he believed rescue workers had not yet been able to reach between 10 and 20 villages.

A local provincial official urged people in the region to stay outdoors during the night for fear of aftershocks, according to IRNA. Falahi said people in the region were in need of bread, tents and drinking water.

The Turkish Red Crescent said it was sending a truck full of emergency supplies to the border, an official said.

This seems to be more serious that initially reported...but for obvious reasons(Olympics and Romney's VP pick), this doesn't seem to get alot of news coverage...
