Strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake hits remote Russian Far East
AFP | Feb 14, 2013, 07.46 PM IST

MOSCOW: A strong 6.8 magnitudeearthquake shook Thursday the remote and largely uninhabited Sakha region in Russia's Far East, ITAR-TASS quoted the local emergency ministry service as saying.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake, whose epicentre was recorded 300 kilometres (185 miles) north of the village of Ust-Nera.

The quake struck 10 kilometres (six miles) below ground at 5:13 Moscow time, the Sakha emergency ministry said.

Quake shakes central Italy

A 4.8-MAGNITUDE quake hit central Italy late Saturday, shaking apartment buildings in the centre of Rome and spooking citizens in the region of Abruzzo, struck by a killer quake in 2009.

The quake hit Frosinone, between the capital and the southern city of Naples, at a depth of 10.7 kilometres according to Italy's Geophysics Institute. No injuries or damage to buildings were reported.

The tremors sparked panicked calls in the Abruzzo region to the emergency services. The medieval town of L'Aquila was hit in 2009 by a 6.3-magnitude quake which killed 309 people, and ruined buildings still scar the landscape.

Inhabitants in villages in the national park in Abruzzo raced out of their houses in panic, according to Italian media reports.

Earlier on Saturday, three Italian builders and a technician were found guilty of multiple manslaughter after a dormitory they had restored and safety approved collapsed during the L'Aquila quake, killing eight students.

ATHENS (Reuters) - An earthquake of 5.0 magnitude struck in the Mediterranean just off Greece's southern coast on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake occurred at 7:42 a.m. (0542 GMT), 34 miles southwest of the coastal city of Kalamata in the Peloponnese region, the Survey said.

Greece is often rattled by earthquakes. While most cause no serious damage, a 5.9 magnitude quake killed 143 people in 1999.

Magnitude 6.1 quake strikes off New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands

2/18/13

WELLINGTON—A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands early Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake hit at 12:19 am (1219 GMT Monday) at a depth of 34 km (21 miles), about 161 km south of Raoul Island in the Kermadecs.

The largely uninhabited islands are northeast of New Zealand’s North Island.

A magnitude 6.0 quake struck off North Island Saturday.

A shallow 6.3-magnitude quake devastated the New Zealand city of Christchurch in the South Island in February last year, leaving 185 people dead.

The country sits on the so-called “Ring of Fire”, the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year.

That is a SIMULATION they're talking about here...

http://news.yahoo.com/earthquake-shake-test-clobbers-nyc-brownstone-194245571.html

2/25/13

New York City's brick houses would fall apart if an earthquake the size of the one that struck in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011 hit near the metropolis, a recent earthquake simulation found.

The shake table test broke an unreinforced brick wall in half on Feb. 18 at the University at Buffalo's Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research.

The 14-foot (4-meter) wall, built with materials such as 100-year-old brick, simulates the central walls of the turn-of-the-century row houses (often called brownstones) found in New York, researchers said. The shake table first mimicking powerful magnitude 5.8 earthquake waves, similar to the 2011 Virginia earthquake, rocking back and forth beneath the walls. But it took a magnitude 6.3 earthquake, which is 5.6 times stronger, to snap the unreinforced wall. [Watch the shake table test]

Unreinforced masonry buildings account for about 80 percent of New York City's housing and appear commonly throughout the East Coast, said structural engineer Juan Aleman, a graduate student at the university.

The good news is that a similar brick wall, reinforced with steel rods and bolts as is done in earthquake-prone California, withstood the shaking. "We're trying to understand, 'How much better does a building perform when it has been retrofitted?'" said Gilberto Mosqueda, a structural engineering professor at the University of California, San Diego, who took part in the test.

Data from the simulation will help Aleman model New York City's vulnerability to earthquakes. "We will try to understand what will happen in a real building if an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or greater happens," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

The 2011 Virginia earthquake, which hit a sparsely populated region, destroyed as many as seven houses and caused major damage to 120 other buildings in the surrounding region, according to government reports.

Strong 6.1 earthquake hits South Pacific island of Vanuatu

Sydney: A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake rattled the South Pacific island of Vanuatu on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but it was not thought to have caused any damage or sparked a tsunami warning.

The shallow ocean quake struck at a depth of 15 kilometres (nine miles), 104 kilometres west of the capital Port Vila at 2.09 pm local time (0309 GMT).

Geoscience Australia put its magnitude at 5.9 and said it was unlikely to have caused any damage.

Vanuatu lies on the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", a zone of frequent seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.

It has been rocked by several large quakes in recent years, averaging about three magnitude 7.0 or above incidents annually, none of which have caused any major damage

2/28/13 Magnitude 6.9 quake hits off Russia's Kamchatka

LONDON (Reuters) - A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck near the southern tip of Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, at a depth of around 52 km (33 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Thursday.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami, based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

Britain's BBC quoted Russia's Emergencies Ministry as saying there were no reports of casualties or damage, and that no tsunami warning had been issued.

The arc formed by the peninsula and the Kurile Islands stretching from Russia to Japan is one of the most seismically active areas in the world.

USGS's first report had put the quake at magnitude 7.0, at a depth of 18 miles.

Tectonic Plates moving Again: Will South America split away from Central America?

3/3/13
http://destination-yisrael.biblesearchers.com/destination-yisrael/2013/03/tectonic-plates-moving-again-will-south-america-split-away-from-central-america.html

One of the expectations of Earth Change researchers is that with the evidence of the folding of the tectonic plates under the Pacific Ocean and the collapsing or subduction of the Western Regions of the Ring of fire in the Far East, that these collapsing plates will eventually pull the Northern Regions of South America to the west into the Pacific Ocean and tear away South America from Central America.

Recently it was noticed that the buoys along the Cocos and the Nazca Plates were deactivated. At the same time the earthquakes along the eastern regions of those same plates that were jutting up against South America along the Andes, from the tip of South America upwards to Peru were increasing exponentially.

As the South American coastline is being pulled over the Nazca Plate, what has been called the “South American Roll” has been activating earthquakes that would have been noticed by the buoys rising or collapsing with the rolling earthquakes are now silent. It would be expected that the officials in charge of the buoys deployment and activation would hesitate to let the southern continent know about the devastation that will soon come their way.

Southern California earthquake: More than 100 aftershocks

Monday morning's magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Riverside County was followed by more than 100 small aftershocks that radiated northeast, indicating that the quake occurred on a secondary fault of the San Jacinto fault, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest aftershock, a 3.2 quake, struck less than a minute after the first quake. The second, a 2.8 magnitude quake, occurred at 11:25 a.m. Another 2.8 quake occurred at 12:50 p.m. The vast majority of the aftershocks were largely imperceptible, with magnitudes smaller than 2.5. Valleys and other low elevation areas feel the effects most strongly, said Susan Hough, a USGS seismologist.

"Deeper earthquakes tend to have wimpy aftershocks," Hough said.

The 4.7 quake was initially recorded as three separate quakes because a foreshock tricked seismograms into recording multiple quakes of multple sizes, Hough said.

Earthquakes of a 4.7 magnitude are typically only felt about 120 miles away from the epicenter, but Monday morning's quake traveled farther, shaking coffee cups as far as Los Angeles.

That's because the quake occured in the San Jacinto Mountains, which are composed of hard granite rock that transmits energy more efficiently, Hough said.

No damage or injuries were reported from the temblor. But it did rattle some nerves in the desert.

Minnesota transplant Shannon Haber said that even though she's lived here since 1996 she definitely has not gotten used to earthquakes.

“I was just a little frightened,” Haber said. “There was small shaking and it made me nervous because I’m 23 floors up.”

Haber was working in Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters in Westlake when the earthquake shook at 9:56 a.m. more than 100 miles away in Anza in Riverside County. The shaking was the biggest and longest-lasting she could remember.

“It was a slow, swaying motion,” she said. “It sort of felt like I was on a boat, a sort of wavy feeling that lasted 10 to 20 seconds. … No one else reacted around me. They’re all veterans of earthquakes.”

In Anza, about 10 customers had sat down to a late breakfast at a Diner 371 when the quake struck about 20 miles away.

Nothing was broken and no one was hurt, said Diner 371 waitress Michelle Padaron, 30, who was stocking tables with napkins when the quake struck.

After four seconds of shaking, customers quickly returned to their meals of burgers, burritos and eggs, Padaron said.

"Everyone just kind of looked up, then looked at each other, and that was it," Padaron said.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing when reading that article - no, people, especially born again Christians shouldn't run around like their hairs are on fire when these tremors hit. But nonetheless it's as if the attitude is very indifferent, life-goes-onish, etc.

6.1 quake off Kamchatka, far east of Russia: USGS

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of far-eastern Russia early Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake, which hit at 0418 GMT at a depth of 9.7 kilometres (six miles), was centred 269 kilometres from the eastern Russian city of Ozernovsky, on the southern tip of the Kamchatka peninsula.

The USGS said an underground formation there called the Kuril-Kamchatka arc is considered one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

Since 1900, seven powerful earthquakes of magnitude 8.3 or greater have occurred along the arc, the USGS said.

Mexico Earthquake 2013: Moderate Quake Hits Southern Mexico
3/26/13
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/26/mexico-earthquake-2013_n_2955149.html

MEXICO CITY — Earthquakes shook a broad swath of southern Mexico on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway in the capital and sending thousands fleeing into the streets as quake alarms sounded. But there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said a magnitude-5.5 quake hit at 7:04 a.m. (9:04 a.m. EDT; 1304 GMT), centered about 10 miles (17 kilometers) west-southwest of Pinotepa Nacional on the Pacific Coast and 227 miles (365 kilometers) south-southeast of Mexico City.

Mexico Seismology Service initially calculated the quake's magnitude at 5.9.

A second quake struck near the same spot eight minutes later, also setting off alarms in the capital and causing people to evacuate tall buildings in the capital. The USGS calculated the magnitude of that quake at 5.1.

Mexico City's soft soil and geology make it especially sensitive to distant earthquakes. But Mayor Manuel Mancera said in a Twitter post that no damage was reported. Local news media also said there were no reports of damage close to Pinotepa Nacional.

Quake hits Guatemala, no initial reports of damage

Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck Guatemala close to the capital on Monday, though residents of Guatemala City felt little movement from the deep tremor and emergency services said there were no initial reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the 6.2 magnitude earthquake, initially reported as a magnitude 5.8, was only 6 miles southeast of Guatemala City but it was at a depth of 124.6 miles, lessening its effect.

Two Reuters witnesses in the city said they did not feel the quake, nor did they see people running outdoors as is often the case when powerful tremors hit.

David de Leon, a spokesman for Guatemala's emergency agency, CONRED, said he had no reports of damage or victims.

A magnitude 6.2 quake is capable of causing severe damage.

Last November, more than 50 people were killed in a 7.5 magnitude quake in Guatemala in San Marcos state, a mountainous region near the Mexican border.

That earthquake was the strongest to shake the country since 1976, when a magnitude 7.5 quake centered about 99 miles northeast of Guatemala City killed some 23,000 people.

Strong earthquake kills one, injures 19 in Taiwan

A strong earthquake killed one person and injured 19 others in Taiwan today as violent shock waves damaged buildings and triggered a blaze, emergency officials said.

The US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.0 and said it struck at 10:03 am local time, 48 kilometres east of Nantou county in central Taiwan at a depth of 20.7 kilometres.

Taiwan's central weather bureau put the magnitude at 6.1, saying it was the largest quake this year and was felt across the island. Five aftershocks measured from 3.7-4.3 in magnitude occurred in two hours after the main tremor, it said.

6.2 magnitude earthquake shakes Russia's Far East, close to China and North Korea

An earthquake of 6.2 magnitude was registered in the border area between Russia, China and North Korea, the US Geological Survey said Friday.

The epicenter of the quake was 9km from the Russian village of Zarubino, about 60km northeast of the North Korean city of Aodzhiri and approximately 608 km from the capital Pyongyang. No casualties or damage have been reported.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 561.9 km.

As the epicenter of the quake is not within North Korea itself, the South Korean Defense Ministry said that the quake did in fact result from natural causes, and not a nuclear test.

Both earthquakes and nuclear tests create seismic waves, and the earthquake comes as Pyongyang has recently threatened to launch a nuclear strike against the US.

On Friday, North Korea warned that it would be unable to guarantee the safety of embassies and international organizations in the country in the event of conflict starting from April 10.

In March, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the northern part of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in the country’s Far East, and a 6.9 earthquake struck south of the peninsula in late February

Neither resulted in causalities or significant damages.

An underground formation in the area known as the Kuril-Kamchatka arc is one of the most seismically active regions in the world.

The USGS says that since 1900, seven massive earthquakes registering 8.3 on the Richter Scale or higher have occurred along the arc.

Over 70 Earthquakes Hit North Iceland Last Night
Approximately 70 earthquakes were picked up by the automatic sensors of the Icelandic Met Office in the Grímsey Island seismic belt in North Iceland from midnight yesterday and until the morning. The activity started with a 5.5 quake on April 2. Some of last night’s quakes were of a magnitude higher than three but none measured above four points, ruv.is reports.  Yesterday, around 70 earthquakes were registered from noon and until the evening, five of which were above three in magnitude. The quakes could be felt on Grímsey but not on the mainland.

Seismologists are paying close attention to the epicenter of the earthquakes at Skjálfandadjúp. So far, there are no indications that the activity is spreading to other fracture zones and the condition was stable yesterday. A level of uncertainty was declared in North Iceland following the 5.5 earthquake and the region’s residents were asked to inform themselves on how to react in case of a major earthquake.

Earthquake Swarm Rattles North Iceland
Becky Oskin, OurAmazingPlanet Staff Writer
Date: 05 April 2013 Time: 09:27 AM ET

An earthquake swarm continues to shake North Iceland, home to one of the world's largest and most active series of volcanoes. More than 800 quakes have rattled island residents, a number that's probably already out-of-date. About 40 to 60 earthquakes hit every hour on April 2 and 3, according to the Iceland Geology Blog. Some smaller quakes preceded the biggest event, a magnitude 5.5 shaker that struck offshore Grimsey Island on April 2. The latest swarm moved about 9 to 12 miles (15 to 20 kilometers) south of the biggest temblor, said Iceland's Meteorological Office. Another large quake, a magnitude 4.7, struck early this morning (April 4) in this southerly spot.

Magnitude 5.4 earthquake shakes buildings in Mexico City

(Reuters) - A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook buildings in Mexico City on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in Guerrero state on Mexico's Pacific coast, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A Reuters witness in the Pacific resort of Acapulco, the biggest city in Guerrero, said the earthquake seemed slight, with some people not even noticing the tremor.

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said city services were operating normally after the earthquake.

7.1 magnitude earthquake hits off Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit a remote part of eastern Indonesia on Saturday, causing residents to run outside in panic, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, an official said.

The temblor struck about 47 miles underground in Papua province, according to U.S. Geological Survey. It occurred in a mountainous area, about 35 miles northeast of Tolikara, said Ali Imran, an official at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta. There was no tsunami warning issued due to its location, he added.

"The quake very strong. It scared us … my wife was screaming, my children were crying," said Yosef Roa of Tolikara, adding there was no damage around his neighborhood where most houses are simple and made of wood in the traditional style.

The quake was felt across many parts of Papua, including the capital, Jayapura, and the copper town of Timika and Wamena, another town in the mountains, Imran said. Residents ran from their houses, and many remained outside fearing aftershocks
.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
