The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has killed at least 37 people and injured 850 in south-west Iran, officials say.

Rescue teams have been sent to the affected area, but darkness is hampering rescue operations.

The quake struck 90km (60 miles) south of the country's only nuclear power station in Bushehr, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says.

However, the nuclear plant has not been affected and is working normally, officials have said.

The quake was felt across the Gulf in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

Bushehr's governor Fereydun Hasanvand told Iranian television that of those wounded, 750 had "minor injuries" and the rest had been sent to provincial hospitals.

Some 10,000 people are thought to live in the affected area in more than 50 villages, two of which have reportedly been completely levelled.

Mr Hasanvand said 700 houses have been damaged and 200 families affected.

The governor's office has sent generators to the area so rescue operation can continue overnight, the BBC's Mohsen Asgari in Tehran reports.

Iran's Red Crescent organisation hopes to end the rescue operation by daybreak, our correspondent adds.

Seismologists said the quake struck at 16:22 (11:52 GMT) at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles) near the town of Kaki, south of Bushehr - a Gulf port city that is home to Iran's first and only nuclear power plant.

Iran's seismological centre in Bushehr province, linked to Tehran University, registered the quake at a magnitude of 6.1.

Five Earthquakes Rattle Oklahoma, Nerves Tuesday Morning

Several earthquakes shook central Oklahoma in the early morning hours of Tuesday, including one that hit while News 9 was on the air.

News 9 received hundreds of phone calls, emails, Facebook and Twitter messages soon after the first earthquake hit.

The first quake was reported around 1:45 a.m. about three miles west of Chandler. The United State Geological Survey says it had a magnitude of 3.0.

Fifteen minutes later, the strongest earthquake of the morning hit the Oklahoma City metro area. The 4.3 quake  was centered near Luther, 29 miles east and northeast of Oklahoma City. This earthquake awakened many residents and shook buildings from Oklahoma City to Stillwater.

The USGS reported a third quake at 2:15 a.m. near Boley, Oklahoma. This one had a magnitude of 2.8. One minute later, a fourth early-morning quake shook the area of Luther and Choctaw.   The USGS says this one had a magnitude of 3.3.

At 5:16 a.m., a fifth earthquake measuring 4.2 was recorded four miles east northeast of Luther. This one struck while News 9 Meteorologist Jed Castles was on the air sharing the forecast, but he was so focused Stan Miller and Bobbie Miller had to interrupt him and point out the lights in the studio were swinging because of the latest earthquake.

There have been some reports of minor damage from Tuesday morning's earthquakes, but no reports of injuries.

USGS information:

Magnitude, Location, Depth

    3.0 Chandler, Oklahoma 4.9
    4.3 Luther, Oklahoma 5.0
    2.8 Boley, Oklahoma 5.0
    3.3 Luther, Oklahoma 5.0
    4.2 Luther, Oklahoma 5.0

Wow...yesterday's "terrorist" attack in Boston, and the earthquakes?

OK is only a 2-3 hour drive from North Texas, so it's not far from where I live.

So the Iran quake just happened today? Along with the quakes in Oklahoma? Hmm.

23  And he turned him unto [his] disciples, and said privately, Blessed [are] the eyes which see the things that ye see:
24  For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen [them]; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard [them].

Magnitude 6.6 quake rattles Sichuan region of China

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake rattled the Sichuan region in western China on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake was centered 69 miles northwest of the town of Leshan, the USGS said. It occurred at a depth of only 10.2 miles below the surface. The magnitude was initially reported at 6.9, but was later revised down to 6.6, the USGS said. The quake happened at 8:02 a.m. local time. It was unclear whether there were any casualties, but the USGS said damage is likely in a quake that size. Millions of residents live in the Sichuan basin. According to China's Xinhua News Agency, the earthquake was felt in the provincial capital, Chengdu, 70 miles away. The epicenter is south of the area where a 7.9-magnitude quake struck in 2008, killing more than 87,000 people.

Quake kills at least 157, injures more than 5,700 in China

China's worst earthquake in three years on Saturday killed at least 157 people and injured more than 5,700, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said. The magnitude 6.6 quake hit a remote mountainous area of southwestern China's Sichuan province at 8:02 a.m. local time, close to where an earthquake killed almost 70,000 people in 2008. The quake struck in Lushan county, near the city of Ya'an, at a depth of 7.5 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was felt in the provincial capital, Chengdu, and in neighboring provinces, causing many people to rush out of buildings, according to social network posts. Most of the deaths were concentrated in Lushan. Pictures on Chinese news sites showed toppled buildings and people in bloodied bandages being treated in tents outside the hospital. Water and electricity in the area were cut off by the quake.

UPDATE 3-Moderate earthquake strikes western Mexico, no major damage

(Reuters) - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck western Mexico on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital, but there were no reports of significant damage or injuries, officials said. The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.2 off the coast, was centered 33 km (20 miles) northwest of La Union, on the border between Guerrero and Michoacan states, close to the Pacific coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said. State oil monopoly Pemex said shortly after the quake that the power supply to its Tula refinery was interrupted. Not long after, it reported electricity was coming back on line again. Pemex said it was unclear if the tremor had caused the break in energy supply at the Tula refinery, Mexico's second biggest. It has a production capacity of 315,000 barrels per day. A Pemex official could not say whether production had been affected, but added that any loss would be made up. The quake was felt in Mexico City, about 325 km (200 miles) away from La Union. Buildings shook and residents briefly ran outdoors, but most returned inside shortly afterwards. Several senior Mexican officials, including Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, said via Twitter there were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.

Death toll rises to 193 in China quake
4/23/13

Beijing: The death toll in China's earthquake rose to 193 today with over 12,000 injured in the catastrophic disaster, as rescue work was hampered by rain and 3,000 after shocks. In the latest figures released here, Chinese officials said 193 people had been killed and 23 people have to be accounted for. Over 1.40 million houses were damaged by the quake affecting the lives of over two million people in the Lushan county of the Sichuan province which was struck by 7.0 magnitude quake on Saturday. The places recorded over 3000 after shocks measuring up to 5.4 in magnitude, making the rescue work more difficult. Also new threats and hazards began to loom large today as rescue and relief efforts entered a fourth day. Rain began lashing the area, hampering relief work and posing threats such as rain-triggered landslides and possible outbreaks of disease.

According to the National Meteorological Center, moderate rain will linger in the quake-hit region over the next few days, adding to difficulties in carrying out relief work. "Such weather is hampering our rescue and relief work, and it's risky to operate large machines under such conditions," Zhang Yefu, an engineer who is leading a team to build makeshift shelters in Lushan county, was quoted by the state-run Xinhua news agency as saying. Sanitation conditions in the region are far from satisfactory as there is not enough clean water and locals are in need of toilets.  "People in the town are drinking water from wells or mountain springs, but we have no idea if it is clean enough or adequate," said 43-year-old Yang Yumei, from the township of Lingguan in Baoxing which is one of the counties that was worst-hit by the quake.

http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/A_global_murmur_then_unusual_silence_999.html
A global murmur, then unusual silence
4/23/13

In the global aftershock zone that followed the major April 2012 Indian Ocean earthquake, seismologists noticed an unusual pattern.

The magnitude (M) 8.6 earthquake, a strike-slip event at intraoceanic tectonic plates, caused global seismic rates of M=4.5 to rise for several days, even at distances thousands of kilometers from the mainshock site.

However, the rate of M=6.5 seismic activity subsequently dropped to zero for the next 95 days
.

This period of quiet, without a large quake, has been a rare event in the past century. So why did this period of quiet occur?

In his research presentation, Fred Pollitz of the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that the Indian Ocean earthquake caused short-term dynamic stressing of a global faulting system.

Across the planet, there are faults that are "close to failure" and ready to rupture.

It may be, suggests Pollitz and his colleagues, that a large quake encourages short-term triggering of these close-to-failure faults but also relieves some of the stress that has built up along these faults. Large magnitude events would not occur until tectonic movement loads stress back on to the faults at the ready-to-fail levels they reached before the mainshock.

Using a statistical model of global seismicity, Pollitz and his colleagues show that a transient seismic perturbation of the size of the April 2012 global aftershock would inhibit rupture in 88 percent of their possible M=6.5 earthquake fault sources over the next 95 days, regardless of how close they were to failure beforehand.

Afghan quake kills seven, injures dozens
4/24/13

SEVEN people were killed and dozens injured when a 6.2 quake struck eastern Afghanistan, officials say. Six people, including some children, died in Nangarhar province on Wednesday, and 75 people were injured, said provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai. One person was killed and one injured in neighbouring Kunar province and many homes were destroyed, said local government spokesman Wasefullah Wasef. Strong tremors were felt in the capital Kabul and Islamabad in neighbouring Pakistan, the Pakistan meteorological office said. The quake hit at 0925 GMT (1925 AEST) and was centred in southeastern Afghanistan at a depth of 70km.

Afghan quake and floods kill 38

A powerful earthquake and flash floods which struck Afghanistan this week killed at least 38 people and damaged hundreds of homes, the presidential palace said Thursday, offering aid to victims. Wednesday’s quake killed 17 and injured 126 in the eastern province of Nangarhar while 300 homes were damaged, a statement said. In neighboring Kunar province, one person was killed, four injured and 45 homes damaged. The continuing flash floods in the northern province of Balkh have killed 20 and damaged 1,900 houses, it said. Floods had also cost lives and damaged property in Ghor and Baghlan provinces, the statement said without giving any figures. President Hamid Karzai had ordered emergency help for victims, it added. The quake centered in Nangarhar caused widespread damage in some villages because most of the houses are built of mud. Provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai put the death toll there at 16 but said it may rise. At an emergency meeting Thursday, the private sector and relief agencies agreed to provide emergency aid and the central government also offered assistance, he said. Mud-built homes were also no match for raging floodwaters in Balkh. “The badly affected areas are impoverished villages where most of the homes are mud-built and can be easily damaged when floods come,” said provincial government spokesman Munir Ahmad Farhad on Wednesday.
