7.0 quake recorded in Alaska's Aleutian Islands

AP  58 min ago  | Rachel D'Oro   of Associated Press

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake was strongly felt in two Alaskan villages in the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Earthquake Information Center says.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska  — A magnitude 7.0 earthquake was reported Friday morning in Alaska's Aleutian Islands.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake happened about 8:25 a.m. Alaska time, and it was centered about 55 miles southeast of Adak, Alaska. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said in a statement that the quake was felt strongly in Adak and Atka, and shaking lasted up to one minute.

There have been no immediate reports of damage.

The earthquake didn't trigger a tsunami warning, but Michael Burgy with the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, says the center is monitoring for potential tsunamis caused by landslides, either on land or under water.

The village of Atka is about 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits east of Adak, Alaska - @USGS

Magnitude 5.8 earthquake hits Benzilan, China - @USGS

Alaska hit by powerful quake, aftershocks
8/31/13

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake was strongly felt in Alaska's Aleutian Islands, the state Earthquake Information Center says, and was followed by aftershocks.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska  — Several aftershocks rattled a remote Aleutian Island region off Alaska in the hours after a major 7.0 temblor struck with a jet-like rumble that shook homes and sent residents scrambling for cover.

At least three dozen aftershocks, including one reaching magnitude 6.1 in strength, struck after the major quake Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"I heard it coming," said Kathleen Nevzoroff, who was sitting at her computer in the tiny Aleutians village of Adak when the 7.0 temblor struck at 8:25 a.m. local time, getting stronger and stronger. "I ran to my doors and opened them and my chimes were all ringing."

There were no reports of damage or injuries from the earthquake, which occurred in a seismically active region. It was strongly felt in Atka, an Aleut community of 64 people, and the larger Aleutian town of Adak, where 320 people live.

The earthquake and the aftershocks didn't trigger any tsunami warnings, but Michael Burgy with the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said the center is monitoring for potential tsunamis caused by landslides, either on land or under water.

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the primary earthquake was centered 67 miles southwest of Adak, about 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage. Shaking lasted up to one minute.

The 6.1 aftershock struck in the same general area at 10:39 p.m. Friday. Police and town officials in Adak didn't immediately answer telephone calls for comment Friday night.

"We do expect aftershocks to occur in the next few days," USGS geophysicist Jessica Turner said. She said there had been a least 30 so far measuring at least magnitude 2.5.

She said the USGS hasn't had any reports of damage from the quakes, but added that the major one and some larger aftershocks have been felt.

The 7.0 quake occurred offshore in the subduction zone where plates of the Earth's crust grind and dive. By contrast, California's most famous fault line, the San Andreas, is a strike-slip fault. Quakes along strike-slip faults tend to move horizontally.

In Adak, city clerk Debra Sharrah was upstairs in her two-story townhome getting ready for work when she heard a noise.

"I thought it was my dog running up the stairs," she said. "It kept making noise and then it got louder. So then all of a sudden the rumbling started."

The four-plex of townhomes was shaking and swaying as Sharrah and her dog, Pico, dashed out the door. It seemed like the building moved for a long time, but the only thing disturbed in her home was a stepstool that fell over.

"Nothing fell off my walls, and the wine glasses didn't go out of the hutch or anything," said Sharrah, who moved to the island community from Montana's Glacier National Park area almost two years ago.

In Atka, Nevzoroff manages the village store and expected to find goods had flown off the shelves. But nothing was amiss.

"Everything seems to be okay," she said.

The communities are located in a sparsely populated region and both played roles in World War II.

Atka residents were displaced during the war, relocating to Southeast Alaska so the U.S. government could demolish the village to prevent the Japanese from seizing it as they had other Aleutian communities. After the war, the U.S. Navy rebuilt the community and residents returned. Today, the community is a cluster of solidly built utilitarian buildings scattered over rolling hills that turned emerald green in warmer months.

Adak, 110 miles to the west, had been home to U.S. military installations that allowed forces to wage a successful offense against the Japanese after they seized the Aleutian Islands of Kiska and Attu. After the war, Adak was transformed into a Naval air station that served as a submarine surveillance center during the Cold War. Later, the facilities were acquired by the Aleut Corp. — a regional native corporation — in a federal land-transfer agreement. It became a city in 2001 and today retains its military appearance.

Apocalyptic Earthquake Event Trending

Saturday, August 31, 2013 16:35

SWITZERLAND, Zürich — Based on breaking news and events, it now appears that an apocalyptic man-made earthquake doomsday-like “event” has been planned for the Pacific Rim. This earthquake event, should it happen, will likely start with a massive and highly publicized earthquake in San Francisco which will then spawn future quakes, tsunamis, dam breaks and volcanic eruptionsaround the Pacific Basin.

Download & Forward PDF
https://sites.google.com/site/trutherswitzerland/2012-doomsday-pdf

Since January of 2012, there have been at least 101 major earthquakes around the world (see full list below), 85 of which have occurred within the Pacific Rim and 33 of which have occurred directly under the Pacific Ocean. At least 12 of the Pacific Rim earthquakes have registered a 7.0 magnitude or higher with the last 6 earthquakes on record (occurred August 12-31, 2013) respectively registering a 6.1, 6.2, 6.2, 6.5, 6.7, and 7.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale. Aside from the unprecedented amount of high magnitude earthquakes, volcanic activity around the Pacific Basin is coincidentally also at an all-time high.

Pacific Rim Earthquake Targets:

1. San Francisco, California (Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge)
2. Mexico City, Mexico
3. Pacific Rim Dams (Hoover Dam, etc.)
4. Pacific Rim Volcanoes (Mount St. Helens, etc.)
5. Pacific Rim Nuclear Reactors (San Onofre Nuclear Plant, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, etc.)

In the aftermath of this man-made earthquake event, San Francisco and Mexico City would be likely be completely destroyed; volcanoes around the Pacific Rim would spew ash and smoke out shutting down air traffic; nuclear reactors in both the U.S. and Japan would rupture sending up a plume of radioactive debris which would ultimately be mixed in with the volcanic ash, rendering the entire Pacific region radioactive; and, deadly tsunamis would devastate coastal cities in California, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and Alaska. In essence, it would be an unprecedented doomsday disaster of epic proportions. Under even conservative estimate, hundreds of thousands would die, millions would be rendered homeless, and the economies of the respective countries involved would come to a screeching halt.

Pacific Rim Tsunami Targets:

1. Japan
2. Hawaii
3. Anchorage, Alaska
4. Australia (Great Barrier Reef)
5. New Zealand
6. Papua New Guinea

However, even scarier than earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes is the realization that these so called “natural disasters” are in fact man-made. Breaking news and revelations in respect to man-made earthquakes and tsunami bombs clearly show a concerted effort to terrorize humanity under the guise of Mother Nature is in full-effect. Coincidentally, the earthquake plot depicted herein appears to be a redux of three previously foiled man-made earthquake terror plots entitled:“‘Carmageddon’ Cover For Future L.A. Earthquake Strike” (September 28, 2012); “Man-Made Earthquake “Events” In California And Japan Imminent” (November 13, 2012); and “Apocalyptic “Doomsday Asteroid” Hoax Planned For 2013” (March 31, 2013).

ENCLOSED CHAPTERS:

 2. Japan
 3. Australia & New Zealand

 7. 101 Earthquakes Since 2012

I. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA:

1.1: USGS Sets-Up 600 “Seismographs” on Hayward Fault Zone
In an apparent move to physically and psychologically set-up San Francisco for a future man-made earthquake event, on August 17, 2013, a report entitled “Building Demolition Gives Scientists One-Up On Looming San Francisco Bay Area Earthquake” was published which posed the question: “What will happen when the next Big One strikes?” According to the report, “…The region has been bracing for a major earthquake that many worry could level vulnerable schools, hospitals and apartment buildings and unleash near-apocalyptic chaos. The USGS estimates there is a 63 per cent chance of a major earthquake in the region within the next three decades.” Interestingly, the report stated that U.S. Geological Survey had set-up and executed a controlled demolition of a 13-story building on the Cal State-East Bay campus which was built about 600 meters from the Hayward Fault Zone, considered one of the most dangerous fault lines in the country. Prior to the demolition, the USGS placed more than “600 seismographs in concentric circles” within 1.6 kilometers of the building. Whether or not this demolition was cover for the insertion of earthquake explosives into the fragile fault zone is not known, but it did provide the perfect opportunity.

1.2: 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Mystery Solved
In more apparent programming that another man-made apocalyptic earthquake is planned for San Francisco, on August 2, 2013, a propaganda report entitled “Digging Up the Truth: 1906 Earthquake Mystery Solved” was published about the devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake that destroyed San Francisco. The article debates whether or not the 1906 earthquake skipped across the valley, jumping from west to east and back west again as it raced northward, or if it just stayed on one strand. Curiously, 117 years after the quake, researchers finally confirmed that only the western fault strand broke in the 1906 earthquake. The very late results were published August 1, 2013 in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. The obvious question in respect to the findings is “Why now?”Ted Sayre, the Portola Valley town geologist who is a consultant with the firm Cotton, Shires & Associates Inc. is quoted as saying: “Our primary concern is another rupture on the 1906 trace”.

Major San Francisco Earthquakes:

1. June, 1838: San Francisco Earthquake(6.8-7.4)
2. October 8, 1865: San Francisco Earthquake(6.5)
3. April 18, 1906: San Francisco Earthquake(7.Cool
4. October 17, 2013: Loma Prieta Earthquake(6.9)

1.3: San Francisco Bay Bridge
The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge (known locally as the Bay Bridge) is a pair of bridges spanning San Francisco Bay of California, in the United States. Aside from being partially demolished in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the Bay Bridge recently underwent an emergency “repair”. On January 7th, 2013, it was reported that an oil tanker had struck a tower in the middle of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. According to the report, the 752-foot tanker rammed the bridge tower as it headed out to sea damaging a 30 to 40 foot fender of steel on base of the bridge. Six months later on July 27, 2013, the Bay Bridge was again closed due to a suspicious device. Roughly 3 weeks later on August 15, 2013, it was reported that officials plan to re-open the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Labor Day, September 2, 2013. Whether or not the aforementioned bridge closures will ultimately undermine the structural integrity of the bridge is not known, but these timely construction projects could have theoretically provided cover for the installation of demolition explosives in and around the Bay Bridge. These explosives could then be detonated via remote control at a future date in a calculated attempt to give the appearance that the bridge succumbed to a naturally occurring earthquake.

1.4: The Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. In order for a man-made earthquake attack to be even more psychologically terrorizing, a well-known landmark such as the Golden Gate Bridge must be destroyed in the attack to serve as life-long reminder of that horrific day. On February 23rd, 2012, it was reported that the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California, would undergo a renovation project that will “take years to complete”. According to the report, the project involves repainting the two main suspension cables which are responsible for holding the bridge in place. Whether or not the suspicious “renovation” project will ultimately undermine the structural integrity of the bridge is not known, but the timely construction could have theoretically provided cover for the installation of demolition explosives in and around the Golden Gate Bridge. These explosives could then be detonated via remote control at a future date in a calculated attempt to give the appearance that the bridge succumbed to a naturally occurring earthquake. Prior to a high-profile man-made earthquake attack resulting in the demolition of the Golden Gate Bridge, the public must be psychologically prepared to accept that this is in fact possible. Hollywood movie propaganda and government propaganda is a slick way of showing that yes, it can happen. On June 2nd, 2009, the Onion ran a story which openly joked about a “horrific attack on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, which “left thousands missing and assumed dead”. Three years later, Hollywood released “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2012), a film (see trailer) in which a monkey literally destroys the Golden Gate Bridge.

1.5: San Francisco Terror Trending
Since January of 2013, San Francisco has suffered a number or man-made tragedies which appear to be setting up the usually quite city for an unprecedented terror event, namely a massive earthquake. Whether or not a major earthquake will strike San Francisco is not known, but city officials are more than ready.

San Francisco Terror Trending:

1. January 7, 2013:Oil Tanker Strikes Bay Bridge (San Francisco, California)
2. April 2, 2013: Airport Drug Smuggler Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison (San Francisco, California)
3. May 6, 2013: Limousine Fire Kills Five Including Newlywed Bride (San Francisco, California)
4. May 26, 2013:1 Dead, 10 Hurt After Car, Party Bus Collide (San Francisco, California)

6. June 12, 2013: Naked Man Assaults Passengers At Train Station (San Francisco, California)
7. July 6, 2013: Boeing 777 Crash Lands At San Francisco Int. Airport (San Francisco, California)

Speaking of predictive programming - how many tv shows and movies in recent years(like the last 10-15 years) set in San Francisco would show numerous up-close views of that Golden Gate Bridge?

Pt being that for tv shows and movies filmed in NYC, they did the same with those Twin Towers buildings.

6.5-magnitude quake off eastern Indonesia: USGS
9/1/13

A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia Sunday, the United States Geological Survey said, sending people running from their homes in panic but causing no damage or casualties.

The quake was also felt about 500 kilometres (300 miles) away in Darwin, Australia, where it set bookshelves shaking and moved furniture, the national AAP news agency reported.

The earthquake hit in waters near the remote Barat Daya islands in Maluku province at 8:52 pm (1152 GMT) at a depth of 132 kilometres, the USGS said. It was 411 kilometres (254 miles) east of Atambua and 425 kilometres south of Ambon.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue an alert.

Indonesia's national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said some people in southwest parts of Maluku province felt strong shaking for about 10 seconds and ran out of their homes.

But Suharjono, an official from the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency, added: "We have not received any reports of casualties or damage. I don't think there's going to be any significant impact."

And Amin Bin Tongke, chief search and rescue official for Maluku province, said: "The quake is in a really remote area, near a cluster of small islands away from cities or towns, with a very small population."

In Australia, the quake was felt in the Northern Territory and further east in Queensland, AAP reported.

"It went for quite a length of time, around 30 seconds... We had books moving," Steph Bond, senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology in Darwin, was quoted as saying.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

A massive earthquake in San Francisco could very well break the straw off of the camel's back(concerning the collapse of the economy nationwide) b/c that's where the headquarters of Silicon Valley(ie-tech groups like Yahoo) reside.

The desire would be to manipulate the weather in order to affect certain areas negatively, without anyone knowing who was behind it. To make a disaster seem "natural". You can cripple most countries to a great degree just with a big storm.

And imagine the psychological effect from some "official" that tells a country leader to shape up or else, and the next day a quake destroys half a town in said leaders country. THAT would get people's attention.

An earthquake could knock out all kinds of commercial production, as well as local utilities.

9/4/13
Report: Tsunami would swamp California's economy

LOS ANGELES (AP) — If a monster earthquake struck off Alaska's coast, tsunami waves would rush toward California, crippling the nation's busiest port complex and flooding coastal communities, a report released Wednesday suggests.

The potential impacts, based on a hypothetical magnitude-9.1 jolt off the Alaskan peninsula, were detailed by a team led by the U.S. Geological Survey to help emergency responders prepare.

Tsunamis are a rare but real threat in California. After the 2011 Japan disaster, tsunami waves raced across the Pacific and damaged boats and docks in the commercial fishing village of Crescent City.

Scientists said a closer offshore quake would create more havoc. The twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach could be shuttered for at least two days because of strong currents, potentially losing $1.2 billion in business. The Oakland Airport would be flooded. Coastal communities would face mass evacuations, the report said.

Coastal planners held meetings this week around the state to digest the information and review their evacuation plans.

Under the scenario, it would take about four hours for tsunami waves to crash into communities near the Oregon state line and about six hours to reach San Diego — theoretically, allowing time for people to flee to higher ground. The force of the waves would sink boats docked in marinas and damage harbors.

This "helps them understand what a bad tsunami can be," said USGS seismologist Lucy Jones.

The team began work on the scenario before the magnitude-9.0 earthquake that struck Japan in March 2011 and triggered a tsunami. It went back to the drawing board after seeing the toll on Crescent City and other coastal cities. The group focused only on California, even though a powerful offshore Alaska quake would affect the West Coast.

Patrick Corcoran, an Oregon State University expert on earthquake and tsunami hazards, praised the scenario for being realistic. But he said it's a challenge to prepare people for a rare disaster.

"People just go into freak-out mode" when past tsunamis have hit the U.S., said Corcoran, who had no role in the report.

The latest scenario is similar to a quake exercise released several years ago designed to prepare California residents for the "Big One" on the San Andreas Fault. Unlike the quake report that estimated 1,800 casualties, scientists did not include a death toll this time since they could not predict how evacuations would be handled during a tsunami.

Since 1812, the California coast has seen only a handful of tsunamis with waves higher than 3 feet. The deadliest occurred in 1964 when a magnitude-9.2 quake in Alaska triggered tsunami waves that killed 12 people in Northern California.

Magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocks Guanacaste, Costa Rica

September 5th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) The United States Geological Service (USGS) recorded a magnitude 6.0 earthquake 44 km west of Sardinal, in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province at 6:29 a.m. this morning.  The USGS reports that the quake struck at a depth of 41.7km.

ICR has received reports of shaking in the popular tourist destination and beach community of Playas del Coco, described as three strong jolts over the course of about a minute.

The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI) has yet to record the event, but reported a magnitude 3.8 temblor 39 km southwest of Manzanillo de Santa Cruz, also in the province of Guanacaste, a few minutes after the event reported by USGS.  OVSICORI reports that quake having struck at a depth of 5 km.

There are no reports of injuries or damage at this time.

Today marks one year to the day when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Nicoya Peninsula, also in the province of Guanacaste, on September 5th, 2012. That quake occurred at 8:42 a.m. local time.

Not only 6's seem to be the "new norm", but we're starting to see 6's more regularly in recent weeks, especially since the Syrian conflict started heating up!

6.5-magnitude quake strikes Guatemala

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Guatemala near the border with Mexico Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, but there were only reports of minor damage to houses and cars in the Quetzaltenango and San Marcos states.

No injuries or deaths were reported. Local universities and shopping malls were evacuated, according to local media.

The quake's epicenter was just outside Pajapita in Guatemala, about 9 miles from the border with Mexico. It occurred at a depth of 42 miles, the USGS said.

No damage was reported in Mexico's southern Chiapas state, a spokesman for emergency services said.

The initial earthquake was followed about seven minutes later by a 5.4-magnitude aftershock.

Southern Australia is being rattled by hundreds of quakes- and scientists aren’t sure why

September 10, 2013 – AUSTRALIA - Scientists in Victoria are attempting to learn more about the increase in the number of earthquakes in the Gippsland region. Seismologists are describing the region as an earthquake hotspot. There were only 50 earthquakes recorded up until 2009, but since then there have been 700. The activity has been particularly high in the Strzelecki Ranges which lie between the Latrobe Valley and the Gippsland coastline. Locals have been intrigued by the tremors for years. Gary Gibson from the University of Melbourne says the motion in Gippsland is high. “There are other spots that are active for a period of time but they’re active for a geologically short period, maybe 100,000 years or something and they go quiet. And they’ve got no long term evidence of continued motion,” he said. “Whereas the motion in Gippsland here, the rate of earthquake activity we have at the moment is high. The geology suggests that the average over the last few million years is probably even higher.” There are eight seismographs planted in the ground along fault lines meters below the surface around Gippsland to monitor the tremors. They are so sensitive that they can record the vibrations of approaching footsteps. One of them is on Neville Cliff’s beef farm. “We’ve had some good earthquakes come through here. You can hear them coming. It’s like an express train coming and the house shakes,” he said. “How many farmers got a seismograph? People tell me how many cattle they’ve got and how many acres they’ve got and I say well have you got a seismograph?”

Honors student Dan Sandiford recently finished a study on the seismic activity of areas with fractures in the rock bed, called faults. He looked at whether the activity was related to faults in the Gippsland area. “The question really is, are those faults still active? Are the earthquakes that are happening and have been recorded here in the modern era related to those faults? The study suggested that those earthquakes did happen on faults and those faults are some of the largest ones which are known in the area,” he said. Gary Gibson says it is hoped the research will have some impact on building regulations in the area. “One of the problems with living in an inactive area is firstly that your building standards don’t take serious consideration of the type of earthquake that is going to affect us,” he said. “The way you try and avoid problems with earthquakes is you don’t want buildings to collapse under any circumstances so they have to be designed to withstand it.” –ABC.net

Apocalyptic Earthquake Event Trending

AP IMPACT: Many US bridges old, risky and rundown

AP IMPACT: Thousands of US bridges that carry millions daily have multiple safety red flags

9/16/13

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Motorists coming off the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge into Washington are treated to a postcard-perfect view of the U.S. Capitol. The bridge itself, however, is about as ugly as it gets: The steel underpinnings have thinned since the structure was built in 1950, and the span is pocked with rust and crumbling concrete.

District of Columbia officials were so worried about a catastrophic failure that they shored up the horizontal beams to prevent the bridge from falling into the Anacostia River.

And safety concerns about the Douglass bridge, which is used by more than 70,000 vehicles daily, are far from unique.

An Associated Press analysis of 607,380 bridges in the most recent federal National Bridge Inventory showed that 65,605 were classified as "structurally deficient" and 20,808 as "fracture critical." Of those, 7,795 were both — a combination of red flags that experts say indicate significant disrepair and similar risk of collapse.

A bridge is deemed fracture critical when it doesn't have redundant protections and is at risk of collapse if a single, vital component fails. A bridge is structurally deficient when it is in need of rehabilitation or replacement because at least one major component of the span has advanced deterioration or other problems that lead inspectors to deem its condition poor or worse.

Engineers say the bridges are safe. And despite the ominous sounding classifications, officials say that even bridges that are structurally deficient and fracture critical are not about to collapse.

The AP zeroed in on the Douglass bridge and others that fit both criteria — structurally deficient and fracture critical. Together, they carry more than 29 million drivers a day, and many were built more than 60 years ago. Those bridges are located in all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and include the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, a bridge on the New Jersey highway that leads to the Lincoln Tunnel, and the Main Avenue Bridge in Cleveland.

The number of bridges nationwide that are both structurally deficient and fracture critical has been fairly constant for a number of years, experts say. But both lists fluctuate frequently, especially at the state level, since repairs can move a bridge out of the deficient categories while spans that grow more dilapidated can be put on the lists. There are occasional data-entry errors. There also is considerable lag time between when state transportation officials report data to the federal government and when updates are made to the National Bridge Inventory.

Many fracture critical bridges were erected in the 1950s to 1970s during construction of the interstate highway system because they were relatively cheap and easy to build. Now they have exceeded their designed life expectancy but are still carrying traffic — often more cars and trucks than they were originally expected to handle. The Interstate 5 bridge in Washington state that collapsed in May was fracture critical.

Cities and states would like to replace the aging and vulnerable bridges, but few have the money; nationally, it is a multibillion-dollar problem. As a result, highway engineers are juggling repairs and retrofits in an effort to stay ahead of the deterioration.

There are thousands of inspectors across the country "in the field every day to determine the safety of the nation's bridges," Victor Mendez, head of the Federal Highway Administration, said in a statement. "If a bridge is found to be unsafe, immediate action is taken."

At the same time, all that is required to cause a fracture critical bridge to collapse is a single unanticipated event that damages a critical portion of the structure.

"It's kind of like trying to predict where an earthquake is going to hit or where a tornado is going to touch down," said Kelley Rehm, bridges program manager for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

Signs of age are clear. The Douglass bridge, also known as the South Capitol Street Bridge, was designed to last 50 years. It's now 13 years past that. The district's transportation department has inserted so-called catcher beams underneath the bridge's main horizontal beams to keep the bridge from falling into the river, should a main component fail.

Alesia Tisdall, who drove over the bridge every day for 15 years but now crosses it only occasionally, said she found its "bounce" unnerving.

"You'd look at the person sitting next to you like, 'Did you feel that bounce?' And they'd be looking back at you like they were thinking the same thing," said Tisdall, a computer systems specialist at the Justice Department.

Peter Vanderzee, CEO of Lifespan Technologies of Alpharetta, Ga., which uses special sensors to monitor bridges for stress, said steel fatigue is a problem in the older bridges.

"Bridges aren't built to last forever," he said. He compared steel bridges to a paper clip that's opened and bent back and forth until it breaks.

"In a bridge system, it may take millions of cycles before it breaks. But many of these bridges have seen millions of cycles of loading and unloading."

That fatigue is evident in a steel truss bridge over Interstate 5 in Washington state — south of the similar steel truss that collapsed in May. The span that carries northbound drivers over the east fork of the Lewis River was built in 1936.

Because of age, corrosion and metal fatigue caused by vibration, the state has implemented weight restrictions on the bridge. Washington state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Heidi Sause said the bridge wasn't built for the kind of wear — bigger loads and more traffic — that is now common.

The biggest difference between the bridge over the Lewis River and the one over the Skagit River that collapsed May 23 is that the span still standing has actually been listed in worse condition. State officials hope to replace it in the next 10 to 15 years.

While the Skagit span was not structurally deficient, the I-35W bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis in 2007 had received that designation. The bridge fell during rush hour, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the cause of the collapse was an error by the bridge's designers, not the deficiencies found by inspectors. A gusset plate, a fracture critical component of the bridge, was too thin.

There are wide gaps between states in historical bridge construction and their ongoing maintenance. While the numbers at the state level are in flux, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Pennsylvania have all been listed recently in the national inventory as having more than 600 bridges both structurally deficient and fracture critical.

Pennsylvania has whittled down its backlog of structurally deficient bridges but still has many more to go, with an estimated 300 bridges in position to move onto the structurally deficient list every year if no maintenance is done.

Officials say northeastern states face particular challenges because the infrastructure there is older and the weather is more grueling, with dramatic and frequent freeze-thaw cycles that can put stress on roads and bridges.

Many Pennsylvania lawmakers have long sought to boost transportation funding, in part to address crumbling bridges. But this year's proposals, including Gov. Tom Corbett's $1.8 billion plan, stalled amid fights over details.

That's a common issue among infrastructure managers in other states, who say they don't have the money to replace all the bridges that need work. Instead, they continue to do patch fixes and temporary improvements.

Washington's Douglass bridge has been rehabilitated twice. Ronaldo Nicholson, the chief bridge engineer for the area, emphasized that if city officials feel the bridge is unsafe, they'll prohibit trucks from crossing or close the span entirely. Inspections have been stepped up to every six months instead of the usual two-year intervals for most bridges. In the meantime, officials are trying to stretch the bridge's life for another five years — the time they estimate it will take to build a replacement.

Congressional interest in fixing bridges rose after the 2007 collapse in Minneapolis, but efforts to add billions of extra federal dollars specifically for repair and replacement of deficient and obsolete bridges foundered. A sweeping transportation law enacted last year eliminated a dedicated bridge fund that had been around for more than three decades. State transportation officials had complained the fund's requirements were too restrictive. Now, bridge repairs or replacements must compete with other types of highway projects for federal aid.

The new law requires states to beef up bridge inspection standards and qualifications for bridge inspectors. However, federal regulators are still drafting the new standards.

"Do we have the funding to replace 18,000 fracture critical bridges right now?" Rehm asked. "No. Would we like to? Of course."

Pakistan earthquake latest: Death toll 238 and rising; New island created
At least 373 injured; Island up to 100 feet high and 200 feet wide

UPDATE: Officials said 238 deaths had been confirmed so far, 208 in Awaran district, and the toll is expected to rise as rescue teams reach more villages in the remote area.

"We have started to bury the dead," said Abdul Rasheed Gogazai, the deputy commissioner of Awaran, the most affected district in Baluchistan province. He said at least 373 people were wounded.

The 7.7-magnitude quake hit in the Awaran district of Baluchistan province on Tuesday afternoon, destroying scores of mud-built houses and prompting a new island to rise from the sea just off the country's southern coast.

The earthquake was so powerful that it caused the seabed to rise and create a small, mountain-like island about 600 meters (yards) off Pakistan's Gwadar coastline in the Arabian Sea.

Now this is interesting - how this particular earthquake created an island, which also emits flammable gas?

Hhhhmmm...

Rev 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

No, I'm not saying this particular incident fulfilled prophecy, but nonetheless maybe we're seeing a preview? Undecided
