The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. BREAKING: Magnitude-6.4 Earthquake Near Greece

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake rattled parts of Greece on Saturday.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake occurred at 4:11 p.m. Saturday local time (9:11 a.m. EDT) west of the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

More specifically, the epicenter was located 19 miles west of Platanos, Greece, and 172 miles south of Athens, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The United States Geological Survey estimates that the earthquake was strong enough to cause light damage across far western Crete.

So far, there have been no reports of deaths or damage, the Greek police and fire brigade told Reuters.

At least 82 dead, churches destroyed as 7.2 earthquake hits Philippines

A magnitude-7.2 earthquake struck in the central Philippines on Tuesday morning, killing 82 people and severely damaging some of the country's most hallowed churches, authorities said.

The earthquake hit at 8:12 a.m. (5:12 p.m. Monday ET) less than a mile from the town of Carmen in Bohol province, the U.S. Geological Survey and Philippine emergency authorities said. Carmen is in a remote region across the Cebu Strait about 40 miles from Cebu City.

At least two aftershocks rated at magnitude 5.0 or greater followed.

Papua New Guinea Earthquake: 7.1-Magnitude Quake Hits Near South Pacific Country

SYDNEY -- SYDNEY (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, officials said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured magnitude 7.1 and was located 65 kilometers (40 miles) west-southwest of Panguna in Papua New Guinea. It struck at 8:31 p.m. (1031 GMT) at a depth of 58 kilometers (36 miles), it said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was unlikely.

Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea. The country lies on the "Ring of Fire" — an arc of earthquake and volcanic activity that stretches around the Pacific Rim.

A magnitude-7.0 earthquake on the northern coast in 1998 generated a large tsunami that swamped several villages, killing about 2,200 people.

Californians 'drop, cover, hold' in quake drill

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Many Californians dove under desks and tables at midmorning Thursday in a major drill of the "drop, cover and hold on" earthquake survival skill.

Organizers said 9.5 million Californians signed up to take part in the drill at 10:17 a.m. PDT, and another 15 million in earthquake-prone regions elsewhere in the world also participated.

"It started in Guam ... and it traveled around the world," said Mark Benthien, director of outreach at the Southern California Earthquake Center.

The exercise allows first responders to rehearse emergency response plans.

More than 900 firefighters on duty at 106 fire stations around Los Angeles conducted the drop drill, then drove around their districts to practice surveying for damage and assessing need for rescues, said department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

At Rosemont Avenue Elementary School, some students dove under desks while others did not and sprawled in their classroom with simulated injuries created with Hollywood-style makeup.

Firefighters searched the school, located and triaged the injured, laying them out on red, yellow and green mats depending on severity. Some students were tasked to show delayed onset of injuries after an evacuation.

The Great ShakeOut was first held in California in 2008 and participation has since spread around the globe. This year, Japan, Canada, Italy and Guam joined the drill. Thursday's drills were to conclude in Alaska and Hawaii at 10:17 a.m. local time.

California has not experienced a devastating quake since the 1994 Northridge disaster that killed 60 people and injured more than 7,000 in metropolitan Los Angeles.

Thursday was also the 24th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta disaster, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake in the San Francisco Bay region that killed 63 people, injured almost 3,800 and caused up to $10 billion damage.

In recent weeks, parts of the world have been rattled by powerful quakes, including a magnitude-7.1 jolt that killed more than 100 people in the Philippines and damaged historic churches.

Fifth earthquake in 5 days hits Israel. Bible warns of catastrophic earthquakes in Israel in the “last days.”

Every 80 years or so, Israel has a major, catastrophic earthquake. So Israelis know they are “due” for a “big one.”

Those who pay attention to Bible prophecy also know that both the Old and New Testament Scriptures describe major earthquakes occurring in Israel in the last days.

Only AFTER the seals are opened and AFTER the Rapture of the Bride

Earthquake preparations are on the increase by government agencies and among private companies and such preparations will now accelerate, especially in the wake of five minor earthquakes in Israel in the course of the past five days. Among the steps being taken: a new earthquake alert system is being developed by the government and is expected to be ready in 2016.

“Israel’s last major earthquake rattled the region in 1927″ reports the Times of Israel, was “a 6.2-magnitude tremor that killed 500 and injured another 700.” Before that, “an earthquake in 1837 left as many as 5,000 people dead.”

“A small earthquake shook the Sea of Galilee area on Tuesday morning, the fifth such tremor in less than a week,” noted the Times. “The quake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, caused no reported damage or injuries.”

“On Sunday, two minor earthquakes, both measuring 3.6 in intensity, were reported in the north, which followed similar quakes on Saturday and Thursday,” the Times noted. “No injuries have been reported, although some buildings in Tiberias were lightly damaged by the tremors. Last Sunday, a 6.4-magnitude quake, centered in the Mediterranean Sea near Crete, was felt in Athens, Egypt and Israel….In response to the string of temblors, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a special cabinet meeting Monday to discuss the state’s earthquake preparedness, and, on Sunday, the Home Front Command and emergency services representatives held a meeting to discuss emergency procedures in the case of a more major earthquake.”

In Epicenter, I note that Bible prophecy warns of several catastrophic earthquakes that will strike Israel in the “last days.” For example:
 •
“It will come about on that day when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” declares the Lord God, “that My fury will mount up in My anger. In My zeal and in My blazing wrath, I declare that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down, the steep pathways will collapse, and every wall will fall to the ground.” (Ezekiel 38:18-20)

•“I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood, and the stars of the sky fell to earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.” (Revelation 6:12-13)

•“Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne saying, ‘It is done.’ And there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was a great earthquake, such as there had not been since man came upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. The great city [Jerusalem] was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell….” (Revelation 16:17-19)

Minor earthquakes strike near Eilat

After series of northern temblors, two 3.3-magnitude tremors hit, but are barely felt, near southern Israel’s Red Sea tourism city

By Times of Israel staff October 23, 2013, 6:41 pm

A minor earthquake hit the Eilat port area Wednesday afternoon, causing no damage or casualties.

Tremors were felt in the Egyptian border city of Taba, but weren’t felt as strongly in the neighboring Israeli city.

The earthquake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, was preceded by another similar-sized quake in the Red Sea, according to Israel Radio.

The quakes were the first to be felt in the south of Israel, following a series of five minor quakes in six days — the last of them on Tuesday — felt in the north.

In the midst of that succession of minor earthquakes, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday convened a consultation with key ministers to discuss national preparedness, and ordered a “refreshing” of procedures for coping with a major quake. The IDF’s Home Front Command then reissued instructions for dealing with a major temblor.

“Don’t think of an earthquake as unbeatable — experience accumulated throughout the world proves that appropriate preparation and proper action in time of earthquake can save lives,” read the Home Front Command guide. Though it is impossible to predict when, “there is no question that an earthquake will hit Israel,” the guide stated.

Israel’s last major earthquake shook the region in 1927 — a 6.2-magnitude quake that killed 500 and injured another 700. An earthquake in 1837 left as many as 5,000 people dead. Major earthquakes strike Israel once every 80 years or so, meaning the country may be due for a serious natural disaster.

Earthquake measuring magnitude 6.3 hits Taiwan
10/31/13

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A strong earthquake hit eastern Taiwan on Thursday, shaking buildings over a wide area including the capital. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 7:02 p.m. and measured magnitude 6.3. It was centred in a remote mountainous area 45 kilometres south-southwest of the coastal city of Hualian at a depth of just 12 kilometres, it said.

Buildings swayed for more than 10 seconds and startled residents ducked for cover in Taipei, the capital, which is about 150 kilometres from the epicenter.

Taiwan's railway administration immediately suspended train service while it checked for any possible damage to tracks.

Local TV channels reported that there appeared to be almost no damage in Hualian. However, it could take some time for the full impact of the quake to be evaluated because of the remoteness of the epicenter.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage.

However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/hinsdale-willowbrook-willow-springs-230527881.html
West Suburban Tremors(Illinois) Related to Quarry Blast: USGS

United States Geological Survey recorded 3.2 magnitude tremor at 12:35:33 p.m. CT

Shaking felt in the western suburbs on Monday afternoon was being attributed to a quarry blast, officials with the United States Geological Survey said.

The NBC Chicago newsroom began receiving numerous calls of shaking felt in Hinsdale, Willowbrook, Des Plaines and Willowsprings at about 12:40 p.m.

The USGS, citing preliminary information, said a magnitude 3.7 quake shook the area at 12:35:34 p.m. CT. It was about 1.4 kilometers deep, scientists said. They later said the event was related to a quarry blast in Countryside, Ill and downgraded the shaking to a magnitude 3.2 seismic event at 12:35:33. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Hanson Material Service quarry in McCook, Ill., issued a statement saying it was performing "routine blasting operation" at about 12:35 p.m. when about seven seconds after the blast "a separate seismic event was recorded."

"We are reviewing the seismic readings in order to get a better understanding of what may have occurred. At this time, we have no reason to believe that there is a connection between our routine blast and this seismic event." the statement read.

McCook Mayor Jeff Topolski is looking for answers.

"That's my extent of concern, is to get to the bottom of this and make sure it doesn't happen again, Topolski said.

Most of the people who live near the quarry, like Vijay Parikh, barely flinch when they hear a blast, but Monday was different.

"This was a huge blast and my house was shaking like crazy," Parikh said.

Ted Steinbrecher was near a forest preserve when he felt and heard it.

"A male deer took off running like he was being chased or someone had shot off a gun," Steinbrecher said.

"My building began to rattle and I felt myself moving back and forth in relation to the noise," Anthony Monks wrote NBC 5 in an email.

Earthquakes in Illinois aren't uncommon. A 2.7 magnitude quake rattled Ewing, Ill., in March and a 3.8 magnitude shook the Chicago area in the early morning hours of Feb. 11, 2010. In April 2008, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit West Salem, located 270 miles south of Chicago, becoming the state's worst since 1968.

While I continue to be amazed at how many earthquakes are being recorded in-state, our numbers are still dwarfed by the likes of Alaska and California.

Lawmakers want answers after North Texas earthquakes

State representatives said Wednesday they're consulting state geologists after three more small earthquakes shook North Texas on Tuesday.

The rumblings were again felt in Parker County, like seven others this month.

Overall, North Texas has experienced 12 small quakes in November. Tuesday's 3.6-magnitude jolt about 6:40 p.m. got everyone talking at the Sandy Beach convenience store and restaurant.

"I thought, 'Oh Lord, the ground is coming apart!'" said Diane King.

Another worker, John Hutchison, said he nearly lost his balance when the earth began to move.

Many suspect the quakes are somehow connected to gas drilling. Previous studies have found possible links to waste water injection wells near faults, but no link to fracking.

State Rep. Phil King of Weatherford says he and Rep. Charlie Geren of Fort Worth will meet with state geologists to see what can be done to find the cause.

Earthquake in Iran near nuclear plant kills 7
11/28/13

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck a town Thursday in southern Iran, killing seven people while causing no damage at the country's only nuclear power plant, state television reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor struck some 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) northeast of Borazjan. It hit some 60 kilometers (38 miles) north of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which is near the port city of the same name.

The website for state television carried a statement from the plant's operators saying it sustained no damage in the quake.

Bushehr province Gov. Fereidoun Hasanvand told state television that 45 people were injured.

Many people fled their homes during the earthquake, fearful the buildings would crash down on them, local media reported. Those living in neighboring provinces also felt the quake.

In April, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least 37 people and injured hundreds in a town near Bushehr. The nuclear plant wasn't damaged then.

Iran is located in a zone of tectonic compression where the Arabian plate is moving into the Eurasian plate, leaving more than 90 percent of the country crisscrossed by seismic fault lines.

Nine quakes that hit Iran in the last decades were more than magnitude 6, including a 2003 temblor that killed at least 26,000 people in the city of Bam. Scientists say more fault lines likely will be discovered in the country and more major quakes are only a matter of time.
