It states: “The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem. “During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”

Magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes China's Xinjiang: USGS
2/12/14

Beijing (AFP) - A strong and shallow 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck China's far western region of Xinjiang on Wednesday, but in a sparsely populated area, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor was only 12.5 kilometres (eight miles) deep but hit about 270 kilometres east-southeast of Hotan, the USGS said, in an extremely remote area.

China's Earthquake Networks Centre gave the magnitude of the afternoon quake as 7.3.

Another tremor of magnitude 5.7 struck five minutes later, five kilometres deep, followed by a series of aftershocks of up to 4.2 magnitude, it said
.

"We were at the office at the time and felt strong shaking, the windows were rattling," a reporter in Keriya county near the epicentre told state broadcaster CCTV, adding that few people lived in the mountainous area.

The civil affairs ministry said there had been no reports of casualties but it was likely that some houses had been damaged, the Xinhua news agency said.

CCTV reported that Hotan was not seriously affected, while several people in the city told AFP they felt less than a minute of shaking.

"The earthquake lasted less than one minute, it was not strong, there are no buildings collapsed," said one resident by phone.

An expert told CCTV that the affected area often experienced earthquakes but was thinly populated, so the impact was likely to be limited.

A previous 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck the same county in March 2008, affecting 40,000 people, destroying 200 homes and causing an overall 10 million yuan ($1.7 million) in damage.

China is regularly hit by earthquakes, especially its mountainous western and southwestern regions.

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Sichuan province in the southwest killed about 200 people last April, five years after almost 90,000 people died when a huge tremor struck the same province.

Twin 5.6 and 5.9 magnitude quakes killed at least 95 people in the northwest province of Gansu last July.

Once a link on the Silk Road, Xinjiang covers 1.7 million square kilometres (660,000 square miles) -- a sixth of China's territory.

It is home to the country's mostly Muslim Uighur minority, and has seen sporadic attacks on police amid complaints by the ethnic group of religious and cultural repression.

Beijing has justified tighter security in the area to stem a separatist movement it claims has links with foreign terrorist groups.

Xinjiang is rich in natural resources, containing roughly 30 percent of China's onshore oil and gas deposits and 40 percent of its coal, according to the official website china.org.

4.4 earthquake emanates from South Carolina

Residents through much of north Georgia — and several other states — are reporting having felt an earthquake Friday night.

The quake emanated from near Edgefield, S.C., about 100 miles east-southeast of Athens and 25 miles north of Augusta, and registered a 4.4 at 10:22 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 4.4 earthquake can cause moderate levels of perceived shaking and can cause light structural damage.

4.6 magnitude quake hits Greek island
2/15/14

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A strong earthquake, of 4.6 magnitude, has hit the western Greek island of Kephalonia. No damage has been reported.

The tremor occurred at 9:31 a.m. Saturday at sea, west of the island, 25 kilometers (16 miles) below the sea surface, some 300 kilometers west of the capital Athens, the Institute of Geodynamics at Athens University reports.

Since January 26, Kephalonia has been struck by 2 quakes over 5.0 in magnitude, and hundreds of aftershocks over 3.5, resulting to damage in some 3,000 houses, according to authorities. The island, which was flattened in 1953 by 3 successive earthquakes, culminating in a 7.2 tremor, lies in a very active seismic area.

A 4.6 tremor also struck early Friday morning, following a 4.5 one on Wednesday.

From that list, it looks like they are consistent in magnitude, though frequency may be increasing. That doesn't seem to be natural. Almost all of those are between 2.5 and 3.5, at a depth of 10-15 kilometers.

Considering the rush to fracking for oil sands, I'm not convinced this isn't man made.

Yeah, that's the fear that scientists have had if part of the island there were to slide into the sea, if God wills.

A potent threat of major earthquake off California's northern coast
If a 9.0 earthquake were to strike along California's sparsely populated North Coast, it would have a catastrophic ripple effect. A giant tsunami created by the quake would wash away coastal towns, destroy U.S. 101 and cause $70 billion in damage over a large swath of the Pacific coast. More than 100 bridges would be lost, power lines toppled and coastal towns isolated. Residents would have as few as 15 minutes notice to flee to higher ground, and as many as 10,000 would perish.

What Will Happen When The ‘Big One’ Hits California?

On Monday, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake threw the city of Los Angeles into a bit of a tizzy.  The ground shook, people screamed and news anchors ducked under their desks.  But it was just a 4.4 magnitude earthquake.  So what would happen if the “Big One” hit California?  What would happen if an earthquake hundreds of times more powerful than the one that we saw on Monday hit Los Angeles or San Francisco?  We don’t really know what would happen, because nothing like that has happened in modern times.  Fortunately for us, we have been living during a time of extremely low seismic activity in California.  But scientists assure us that will change at some point, and some of them are now warning that when the “Big One” does strike that the devastation could be far worse than people have been imagining.
