The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/state/oklahoma-area-on-record-earthquake-pace/article_ef1e0cbb-600d-589f-a980-52719b9a427e.html
Oklahoma on record earthquake pace, up 90 percent from over a year ago
6/22/15

The ground is trembling underneath the feet of Oklahomans at a record pace this year and by a wide margin, but the jury remains out on whether recent mitigation measures on injection wells will curtail the troubling trend.

Through April 2015, the seismically active region centered in Oklahoma has notched 468 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater. That figure is a leap of nearly 90 percent more than the 248 temblors of that strength experienced in the first four months of 2014, which went on to become the state’s most seismically active year by far, with 997 quakes.

The 2014 final figure was a leap of nearly 500 percent from 2013’s record total of 172 temblors of magnitude 3.0 or more.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s preliminary indications point to a rate of quakes in 2016 similar to what the state is experiencing now, placing added emphasis in solving the shaking problem.

The region in question encompasses the middle third of Oklahoma, in particular north central Oklahoma, and a portion of south central Kansas.
In March, the state Corporation Commission issued a directive to disposal well operators in 16 of those Oklahoma counties to plug back wells deemed too deep and reduce disposal volume by 50 percent until well-depth requirements are met.

Matt Skinner, Oklahoma Corporation Commission spokesman, said the record rate of earthquakes is concerning but that it’s too soon to know if the recent mitigation measures have begun to work, need more time to yield positive results or will prove to be ineffective.

But Skinner said “overwhelming data” show well-depth needs to be the top priority to prevent wastewater related to oil and gas production from flowing into the crystalline “basement,” which has critically-stressed faults.

“This is high-risk behavior that has to be stopped and stopped quickly,” Skinner said, noting there are “high hopes” the mitigation will be effective.
The Corporation Commission compiled an update as of June 15 regarding the directive’s progress in which only a small fraction of wells have yet to provide data to determine compliance.

There are 357 wells in the targeted area, of which 108 have been made shallower and another 19 have plans to plug back or already are in the process. There are 38 wells currently not injecting.

Twenty-one wells are operating at injection volumes cut in half until they are proven not to be putting water into the crystalline “basement.”

Eighty-six have been demonstrated not to be too deep, while 55 low-volume wells will be better evaluated after the high-priority, high-volume ones are handled first.

There has been no action on 30 of the wells, which Skinner attributes likely to be the result of paperwork holdups. No court challenges have arisen from the directive, he said, and most of the outstanding wells involve companies that have been compliant on other wells or even plugged back.
“And for the others, we’ll see,” Skinner said, adding that notices have been sent out stating the Corporation Commission will shut down wells if information hasn’t been provided in seven days.

Experts have noted current data supports only a minute fraction of wells induce temblors felt by people.

Morgan Moschetti, a research geophysicist with the USGS, is shaping an earthquake hazard forecast for 2016. Preliminary indications are Oklahoma is likely to experience a similar rate of quaking next year.

Data is being gathered and a model developed, but Moschetti noted the abundance of magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes create a higher risk for a much larger and more damaging one. Moschetti pointed to the contemporary state-record earthquake centered near Prague in 2011 that registered a 5.6 on the Richter scale.

A USGS summary reported at least two injuries, 14 homes destroyed and many more damaged.

“It’s not unreasonable to expect something of that magnitude or even larger,” Moschetti said.

That potential is among the reasons critics have been decrying the state government for moving so slowly in trying to abate the quakes or even acknowledging a human correlation.

The Corporation Commission has its reasons for not acting sooner, Skinner said, but delving into a “right or wrong” debate now when the state isn’t “through this by any stretch of the imagination” is counterproductive.

The criticism may be justified, he said, but that analysis should take place after the threat has been neutralized.

“Both sides have valid points, and they’re important points,” Skinner said. “But the important issue is to debate what’s next.”

6/25/2015 — MAJOR EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY ACROSS 3,000+ MILES — WEST PACIFIC UNREST SHOWING

Over the past 24 hours (up to 5pm CDT June 25, 2015) a series of large earthquakes has struck across 3,000 miles of the West Pacific.

A single M6.0 struck, along with a flurry of M5.0 events spanning the area from North of New Zealand West to Indonesia.

This renewed movement along the Central West Pacific was expected, especially the area where the M6.0 struck — we were watching this area for a shallow earthquake to strike after we saw deep movement below the plate.

After several days of relative “silence” we now begin to see renewed larger activity across the warned areas.

6/28/2018 — HAWAII 5.0 — EARTHQUAKE STRIKES THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII (M5.2 REVISED UP)
Quote
A large, and rare magnitude 5.0 earthquake has struck the big island of Hawaii near the flanks of Kilauea Volcano. (now revised up to M5.2)

Seen in a screenshot from Google Earth, the earthquake epicenter is on the Southeast portion of Kilauea volcano.

Kilauea recently underwent a lava lake rise, and subsequent draining event over the past 2 months, accompanied by a flurry of smaller earthquakes, now we see a larger event strike near the same location.

Magnitude 6.3 earthquake rattles south-central Alaska
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake rattled a wide area of south-central Alaska, including Anchorage, on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The tremor struck about 40 miles south of Mount Redoubt, an active volcano near Cook Inlet, and 140 miles southwest of Anchorage, the state's largest city, and was felt 150 miles from its epicenter, the USGS said.

Earthquake Hits Israel, No Injuries, Damage Reported
A 4.3-magnitude earthquake occurred early Thursday in Israel. The quake was centered on an area near the Dead Sea, and several people reported feeling its effects in southern Israel. Residents of the north also said they felt vibrations, and investigators are checking whether there were indeed two quakes around the same time.

Thursday morning, at 5:39 local time, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Dead Sea region of Israel, an area that is the deepest depression on the face of the planet. Though there were no reports of injury or damage in Israel or neighboring Jordan, it is certainly worth considering the meaning of the event, especially in light of other recent earthquakes that have hit Israel and the catastrophic earthquake that hit a struck Nepal a few months ago.

Biblical scholars explain that the name of God, “Elohim”, refers to the aspect revealed through nature and linked to judgment. For early man, and even today, every natural phenomenon can be an awe inspiring experience, an occasionally fearsome reminder of our mortality. An earthquake is, quite literally, a moving experience.

Scientists have noted that the Dead Sea Rift has affected human civilization through time as well as the flora and fauna of the region, causing migrations and creating water sources. However, it should be noted that the location of Thursday’s earthquake is the precise region of Jericho, known for its city walls that came tumbling down, and also the area of Sodom and Gomorra. A biblical perspective certainly seems in order when considering occurrences of geological proportions.

The recent quake was a result of tensions in the Dead Sea Fault which is part of the Syrian-African Rift, extending from Syria to Mozambique. Experts have predicted that a major earthquake could occur in the near future and local authorities have begun projects to bolster building against such an event.  Tectonic tension is building and most geologists consider a major event to be inevitable.

An earthquake in 1837 in the area killed as many as 5,000 people. The last major earthquake to hit the center of Israel was a 6.2 magnitude quake in 1927, killing over 500 people and damaging sites, like the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and al-Aqsa Mosque. On March 22, 2012, a 3.7 earthquake hit the exact region as well.

Prophecies connected to earthquakes abound, seeming to emphasize their biblical significance, especially in regards to End of Days prophecy:

“Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south…You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.” (Zechariah 14:3-5)

“The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry.” (Psalms 18:7)

“This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD. In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground.” (Ezekiel 38:18-20)

“I looked at the earth, and it was formless and empty; and at the heavens, and their light was gone. I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking; all the hills were swaying. I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away…” (Jeremiah 4:23-28)

“They will flee to caverns in the rocks and to the overhanging crags from the fearful presence of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth.” (Isaiah 2:21)

While Thursday’s earthquake caused no damage in Israel, the geological occurrence has served as a wakeup call for many. Dr. Shmuel Marco, who has spent many years studying the timeline of earthquakes in the region, told the Jerusalem Post that geological experts should take a hint from the Bible when predicting the next “big one.”

Marco noted that prophets became active a certain number of years after major earthquakes. Major earthquakes were recorded in the Jordan Valley in the years 31 BCE, 363 CE, 749 CE and 1033 CE. “So roughly,” says Marco, “we are talking about an interval of every 400 years. If we follow the patterns of nature, a major quake should be expected any time because almost a whole millennium has passed since the last strong earthquake.”

Over 200 earthquakes gone and more to come

Since the 6.6 magnitude quake that shook Barbados in mid-July, there have been more than 200 earthquake events recorded northeast of the island – though most of them very minor – and Barbadians can expect more, some of them almost as big as the one earlier this year.

Vanuatu shaken by magnitude-7.3 quake; no reports of damage
10/20/15

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The South Pacific nation of Vanuatu was shaken Wednesday by a magnitude-7.3 earthquake, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck 335 kilometers (207 miles) north of the capital, Port Vila. It was a relatively deep 131 kilometers (81 miles), meaning it had less impact on the surface than if it had been shallower.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any tsunami warnings.

Shadrack Welegtabit, the director of Vanuatu's National Disaster Management Office, said there were no initial reports of damage or injuries but he was still awaiting information from some of the outer islands closer to the epicenter.

He said people in the capital felt the quake as heavy and slow-moving, but it wasn't strong enough there to knock items off shelves.

Vanuatu sits on the Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common. The nation is also prone to volcanoes and cyclones, and was ranked by the United Nations University as the world's most at-risk nation for natural disasters.

Questions, answers on cluster of quakes near San Francisco
10/19/15

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) — A swarm of small earthquakes has been rattling an area east of San Francisco, with more than 200 recorded since last week.

All the quakes were centered around the city of San Ramon on either the Calaveras Fault or offshoots of it. The largest struck Monday and was logged as a magnitude-3.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No injuries or major damage have been reported.

Experts say such swarms are not unusual or cause for extra concern. Here are the basics on the temblors and what to expect:

IS A SWARM LIKE THIS A PRECURSOR TO A BIGGER EARTHQUAKE?

The San Ramon, Danville and Alamo area has seen several swarms over the past 40 years, U.S. Geological Survey Research Geophysicist Brad Aagaard said. The largest earthquake in each was in the magnitude 3.5 to 4.4 range.

Based on this historical data, Aagaard says, the most recent swarm is unlikely to lead to a large, damaging earthquake.

Several of the swarms have lasted about 30 to 40 days, so East Bay residents likely will continue to experience light shaking for a couple more weeks.

___

DOES A SWARM RELIEVE PRESSURE TO AVOID A BIGGER QUAKE?

These small earthquakes relieve only a very tiny amount of stress compared with a magnitude-6.0 or larger earthquake. As a result, they do not reduce the occurrence of larger earthquakes.

___

HOW LIKELY IS A LARGE EARTHQUAKE ON THE CALAVERAS FAULT?

The probability of a magnitude-6.7 or larger quake on the northern section of the Calaveras fault in the next 30 years is 8 percent.

The probability of a magnitude-6.7 or larger earthquake somewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area region in the next 30 years is 72 percent.

___

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE DO TO PREPARE FOR A BIG EARTHQUAKE?

Experts suggest keeping a gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation. They also recommend having a three-day supply of nonperishable food.

Officials say people should have an earthquake preparedness kit with a flashlight, extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand crank radio and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radio with tone alert.

Other items to have include a first-aid kit, a whistle to signal for help, a dust mask to help filter contaminated air, as well as plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place. Maps, a can opener, a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, as well as moist towels and garbage bags for personal sanitation are also advisable.

Afghan earthquake rocks Asia, dozens dead
10/26/15

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A strong earthquake in northern Afghanistan shook buildings from Kabul to Delhi, cut power and communications in some areas and caused more than 150 deaths, mainly in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Pakistani officials said that at least 147 people were killed and nearly 600 others wounded across the country, while Afghan officials said 33 people were killed and more than 200 wounded.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the 7.5-magnitude earthquake was in the Hindu Kush mountains, in the sparsely populated province of Badakhshan, which borders Pakistan, Tajikistan and China. It said the epicenter was 213 kilometers (130 miles) deep and 73 kilometers (45 miles) south of the provincial capital, Fayzabad.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani sent his condolences to families who had lost relatives and property, and appointed an "assessment committee" to ensure emergency relief reached the needy as soon as possible, his office said.

In Takhar province, west of Badakhshan, at least 12 students at a girls' school were killed in a stampede as they fled shaking buildings, said Sonatullah Taimor, the spokesman for the provincial governor. Another 42 girls were taken to the hospital in the provincial capital of Taluqan.

In Pakistan, Inayatullah Khan, the provincial minister for local bodies, said the death toll in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone had jumped to 121.

Strong earthquake hits Northern AfghanistanPlay videoStrong earthquake hits Northern Afghanistan
The toll from Afghanistan's Badakhshan province was likely to rise as reports came in from remote areas. The province is often struck by earthquakes, but casualty figures are usually low.

The province also suffers from floods, snowstorms and mudslides, and despite vast mineral deposits is one of Afghanistan's poorest regions. It has recently also been troubled by Taliban-led insurgents, who have used its remote valleys as cover to seize districts as they spread their footprint across the country.

Power was cut across much of the Afghan capital, where tremors were felt for around 45 seconds. Houses shook, walls cracked and cars rolled in the streets. Officials in the capital could not be immediately reached as telephones appeared to be cut across the country.

Afghanistan's Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah tweeted that the earthquake was the strongest felt in recent decades.

He had earlier called an emergency meeting of disaster officials, which was broadcast live on television. He instructed doctors and hospitals to be prepared to receive and treat casualties.

Abdullah said telecommunications have been disrupted in vast parts of the country, preventing officials from getting a precise picture of damage and casualties. He also warned of aftershocks from the earthquake.

In Pakistan, Zahid Rafiq, an official with the meteorological department, said the quake was felt across the country. In the capital, Islamabad, buildings shook and panicked people poured into the streets, many reciting verses from the Quran.

"I was praying when the massive earthquake rattled my home. I came out in a panic," said Munir Anwar, a resident of Liaquat Pur in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province.

Pakistan's army chief, Gen. Raheel Sharif, ordered troops to the quake-affected areas, the military said in a statement. It gave no further details.

The quake was also felt in the Indian capital New Delhi, though no damage was immediately reported. Office buildings swayed and workers who had just returned from lunch ran out of buildings and gathered in the street or in parking lots.

In Srinagar, the main city in the India-controlled portion of disputed Kashmir, the tremors lasted at least 40 seconds, with buildings swaying and electrical wires swinging wildly, residents said.

"First I thought somebody had banged the door. But within seconds, the earth began shaking below my feet, and that's when I ran out of the building," said government official Naseer Ahmed.

People ran outside, shouting, crying and chanting religious hymns in an effort to keep calm. "I thought it was the end of the world," shopkeeper Iqbal Bhat said.

Srinagar Police Inspector General Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gilani said that "some bridges and buildings have been damaged," including a cracked highway overpass.

Two elderly women died from heart attacks suffered during the earthquake, including a 65-year-old woman in the northern Kashmiri town of Baramulla and an 80-year-old in the southern town of Bijbehara, officials said.

Death toll reaches 311 in quake-hit Pakistani, Afghan areas

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Rescuers were struggling to reach quake-stricken regions in Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday as officials said the combined death toll from the previous day's earthquake rose to 311.

According to Afghan and Pakistani officials, 237 people died in Pakistan and 74 in Afghanistan in the magnitude-7.5 quake, which was centered deep beneath the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan's sparsely populated Badakhshan province that borders Pakistan, Tajikistan and China.

Afghan authorities were scrambling to access the hardest-hit areas near the epicenter, located 73 kilometers (45 miles) south of Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan province.

In Pakistan, the Swat Valley and areas around the Dir, Malakand and Shangla towns in the mountains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were also hard-hit in the quake. The Pakistani town closest to the epicenter is Chitral while on the Afghan side it is the Jurm district of Badakhshan.

More than 2,000 people were injured in Monday's temblor, which also damaged nearly 2,500 homes in Pakistan, officials said.

In Afghanistan, Ismail Kawusi, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry said the numbers gathered so far from hospitals in various provinces recorded 457 injured. Earlier, Wais Ahmad Barmak, the Afghan minister for disaster management, said 74 people were dead and 266 had been injured.

Badakhshan's Governor Shah Waliullah Adeeb said that in all, 13 districts in the province had been affected, with more than 1,500 houses either destroyed or partially destroyed.

In his province alone, casualty figures of 11 dead and 25 injured "will rise by the end of the day, once the survey teams get to the remote areas and villages," Adeeb said.

Helicopters were needed to reach the most remote villages, many inaccessible by road at the best of times, he added. Now, landslides and falling rocks have blocked the few existing roads. Food and other essentials were ready to go, he said, but "getting there is not easy."

Badakhshan is one of the poorest regions of Afghanistan, despite vast mineral deposits. It is often hit by earthquakes, but casualty figures are usually low because it is so sparsely populated, with fewer than 1 million people spread across its vast mountains and valleys. It also suffers from floods, snowstorms and mudslides.

The casualties and the extent of damage were still being assessed, said Ahmad Kamal, the spokesman for Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority. Bajur tribal region bordering Afghanistan was also affected by the quake, with dozens of homes damaged in other tribal regions.

Pakistani helicopters and military planes were being used to transport relief supplies and military engineers were working on restoring communication lines disrupted by landslides triggered by the quake, said Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa, the army spokesman.

The landslides were also hampering rescue attempts in some areas, and roads were being cleared to ease access. The military was also distributing food and blankets to people in remote and inaccessible northwestern and northern region, where most casualties and damage were reported, Bajwa said in a statement.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday visited the earthquake-hit town of Shangla in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where at least 49 people were killed and 80 were injured in the earthquake. Also Tuesday, Sharif attended a briefing in Islamabad about the damages caused by the quake.

According to a statement, Sharif praised the country's rescue efforts and insisted that Pakistan was "capable enough to rescue and rehabilitate those affected by the earthquake" and that every effort would be made to help those stricken. He said his government would soon announce a relief package to compensate those affected by the quake.

Monday's quake shook buildings in the capital, Islamabad, and elsewhere in Pakistan and Afghanistan for up to 45 seconds in the early afternoon, creating cracks in walls and shutting down power.

In Afghanistan's Takhar province, 12 students at a girls' school were killed in a stampede as they fled a shaking building.

Sonatullah Taimor, a spokesman for the governor of Takhar province, said so far authorities had recorded 14 people dead there — including the schoolgirls. More than 50 were injured and 200 houses were destroyed. He said food, blankets and tents were in short supply, though people had been warned to sleep outside — in near-freezing temperatures — in case of aftershocks.

The United States offered emergency shelters and relief supply kits stored in warehouses throughout Afghanistan that could be used. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the U.S. government has been in touch with officials in Afghanistan and Pakistan and is ready to provide any additional support.

Pakistan has said it will not issue any appeals to the international community for help as the country has the required resources to carry out the rescue and relief work.

A magnitude-7.6 quake hit Pakistan on Oct. 8, 2005, killing more than 80,000 people and leaving more than 3 million homeless, most of them in the northwest of the country and in the divided region of Kashmir.

That quake was much shallower than Monday's — 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface, compared to the depth of 213 kilometers (130 miles) on Monday — and thus caused greater damage, said Mohammad Hanif, an official at the Meteorological Department.

Record-Breaking 408 Earthquakes Hit Bay Area City Over Past 2 Weeks
10/28/15

A whopping 408 earthquakes have hit San Ramon, California, in the past two weeks, including 11 in one 24-hour stretch.

This record-breaking earthquake swarm is nothing to fear, however, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Periods of tectonic unrest are common in the area and probably don't presage a larger quake, the USGS said.

Most of the quakes affecting this Bay Area city are tiny. The one that kicked off the swarm at 8:50 a.m. Pacific Time on Oct. 13 was a mere magnitude 0.8. People don't usually feel earthquakes until they reach a magnitude of 2.5; quakes between magnitude 2.5 and 5.4 can be felt but rarely cause much damage. Most of the quakes occur at depths of 5 to 6 miles (8 to 9.7 kilometers). [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

A handful of the San Ramon quakes have rattled locals, including a magnitude-3.6 quake that hit on Oct. 19 and a magnitude-3.1 quake recorded on Oct. 27, both causing weak to light shaking in the East Bay (the eastern part of the San Francisco Bay area). Between 11:30 a.m. PT on Oct. 22 and 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 23, 11 quakes hit the area. Five were between magnitudes of 2.0 and 2.9, and one was a magnitude 3.2.

The quakes are hitting on the north end of the Pleasanton Fault in the Calaveras Fault zone, according to the USGS. Swarms of small earthquakes are common in this fault system. In fact, in 1990, a swarm of 351 earthquakes struck over a 42-day period. The largest quake in that swarm was a magnitude 4.2, a level unlikely to cause serious damage.

The most recent earthquake swarm on this fault system was a 30-day stretch in 2003, over which 120 temblors hit a few miles south of the current quakes. Again, the largest quake was a magnitude 4.2.

"Based on the characteristics of the historical earthquake swarms in this region, the current swarm may continue for several more weeks and is unlikely to be a foreshock to a larger quake," USGS officials said. "East Bay residents may feel shaking from more earthquakes in the magnitude 3-4 range until the swarm abates."

The chance of a serious quake (of magnitude 6.7 or above) hitting the San Ramon area is a mere 8 percent over the next 30 years, the agency estimates. In comparison, the chance of a quake that size occurring somewhere in the Bay Area over the next three decades is 72 percent.

The message, according to the USGS, is to not panic over the current swarm, but to be prepared with an earthquake safety plan for the long term.

Massive 'crack in the Earth' opens up suddenly in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains
The immense crack, which appears to split a hilltop in half, was discovered by startled backcountry hunters.

10/30/15

A dramatic crack has suddenly formed in the foothills of Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains that measures an impressive 750 yards long and 50 yards wide. It was discovered recently by surprised backcountry hunters who travel frequently to the area in search of game.

First reported by SNS Outfitter & Guides, a hunting company, on their Facebook page, the mammoth chasm appeared over the course of just a couple of weeks. It's an impressive example of just how quickly very large geological events can occur under the right conditions.

"Everyone here is calling it ‘the gash.’ It’s a really incredible sight,” wrote SNS on the group's Facebook page.

PHOTOS TO AMAZE: 13 of the most bizarre lakes in the world

"An awesome example of how our earth is not as stable as you might think. Awesome forces at work here to move this much dirt!!” added Randy Becker, one of the hunters to stumble upon "the gash." Becker shared a number of stunning photographs of the crack to his own Facebook page.

A shot taken from a distance and posted at SNS gives some perspective about just how wide and how deep the crack is:

Contrary to some sensational claims swirling about on social media, the crack is not an opening to the underworld or a sign that Yellowstone is about to erupt. The processes that created the crack are not even all that mysterious.

SNS is reporting that an engineer gave a more rational explanation for how the crack formed: "Apparently, a wet spring lubricated across a cap rock. Then, a small spring on either side caused the bottom to slide out. He estimated 15 to 20 million yards of movement."

Though the speed with which the large crack formed might seem earth-shattering, these kinds of landslides are not that uncommon in the area on a smaller scale. This one just happened to be especially voluminous.
