Bible becomes 2011 bestseller in Norway

New translation's success, which saw queues outside bookshops, is not linked to Utøya murders, says publisher

The UK's 2011 bestseller lists might have been dominated by cookery, courtesy of Jamie Oliver, and romance, courtesy of David Nicholls, but Norwegian readers were plumping for another sort of book last year: the Bible.

The first Norwegian translation of the Bible for 30 years topped the country's book charts almost every week between its publication in October and the end of the year, selling almost 80,000 copies so far and hugely exceeding expectations. Its launch in the autumn saw Harry Potter-style overnight queues, with bookshops selling out on the first day as Norwegians rushed to get their hands on the new edition.

"We only printed 25,000 to start with and thought it would last six to nine months, but it was launched mid-October and by the end of the year it had sold 79,000 copies – it's just incredible," said Stine Smemo Strachan, who worked on the project for the Norwegian Bible Society. "It has only been knocked off the number one spot once, by [literary author] Karl Ove Knausgård … There were people sleeping outside the day before the launch because it was embargoed – it's a bit ironic seeing that the content has been available for quite some time now."

Thirty consultant translators, priests and academics translated the Greek and Hebrew original into Norwegian for the new edition, with a team of 12 literary authors including Knausgård and playwright Jon Fosse then smoothing out that text. "Obviously it was very important to get the right translation but they also wanted it to be readable, to make sure it was good literary language," said Smemo Strachan. "None of these authors are religious - they are all just very good literary writers who thought it would be an interesting project to be involved in."

A "literary" version of the Bible, with no chapters or verses which "reads like a novel", has also been published and has "sold incredibly well", said the publisher.

According to official data, 80% of Norway's population of 4.9m belongs to the Church of Norway, but not all the new edition's purchasers are thought to be buying it for strictly religious religions. "It certainly can't just be actively religious Christians who are buying it because it just wouldn't make these numbers," said Smemo Strachan.

This summer's murders in Utøya and Oslo are not viewed as a reason for the Bible's record-breaking sales, however. "It's hard to tell: obviously it has had a great impact on the country and people here," said Smemo Strachan. "But the success is being attributed to the fact that its publication is seen as a cultural event, and to its readability."

Oh really? And just where did they manage to find the original Greek and Hebrew text? I'd like to know what text they are talking about.

Bible Becomes Best-Seller in 'Secular' Norway; Many Surprised

The Bible has become the best-selling book in Norway, which some say is one of the most secular countries in Europe.  Moreover, a successful six-hour play inspired by the Bible isfurther evidence that the country has not lost its interest in religion and faith.

"Church attendance is a poor measure of the Norwegian state of faith," said post-doctoral fellow Thorgeir Kolshus at the University of Oslo, according to The Associated Press. "Religion is a very private thing for Norwegians."

The Holy Book sold close to 160,000 copies in 2012, which some officials said is thanks to a good marketing campaign that appealed both to teenagers and adults.

"It's easier to read," said Helga Haugland Byfuglien, presiding bishop for the Church of Norway. "There is no over-interpretation of the text."

Although the CIA World Factbook lists 85.7 percent of Norway's population as belonging to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, parliament voted last year to end the church's status as the official state religion. Statistics suggest that only 1 percent of the population regularly attends church, and only 43 percent of respondents to a 2010 survey affirmed that they believe in God.

Still, to the surprise of some, the Bible earned its place as the best-selling book in the Scandinavian country, even beating out popular titles such as Fifty Shades of Grey.

The Norwegian language version of the Bible apparently became so popular that it spun off as a six-hour fictional stage production called "Bibelen," which drew 16,000 spectators during its three-month run.

"Thoughts and images from the Bible still have an impact on how we experience reality," said Karl Ove Knausgaard, a Norwegian author who helped with the translation of the Bible.

Dag Smemo, project manager for publisher the Norwegian Bible Society, previously explained that working on a new translation of the Bible was always a touchy issue.

"People say they like it the way it is. But we had a very thorough procedure, involving authors and poets, secular people and believers, and discussing the whole translation word by word, so there is not only a good translation of the Greek and Hebrew but also a very good flow of the Norwegian language," Smemo said.

"People are saying that it's very good, and we are seeing this from both conservative groups and more secular groups. It's definitely not only Christians buying it. It's atheists too – people are saying the Bible is important for us, for our culture, and for the nation."

Another possible reason for the popularity of the Bible is the increased immigration rates, suggested Anne Veiteberg, publishing director of Norway's Bible Society. AP noted that more than 258,000 immigrants have relocated to Norway in the past six years, many of them Christians.

"Now that we're exposed to other faiths, Norwegians have gotten more interested in their own faith," Veiteberg offered.

Now THIS should catch anyone's attention - doesn't look like it's the 1611 Authorized Version they've been best-selling, right?

Good marketing campaign? Appeals to all demographics? 6 hour FICTIONAL stage production? Easier the read? New translation? Greek and Hebrew rhetoric again?

Dunno, but looks like they were selling some counterfeit bible - and if they were really having a revival over there in Norway, would think we would be hearing it from many other news sources. Otherwise, scripture prophecies there's NO revival in the last days.

i was thinking that too doesn't say which bible version it is in the main news stories people are bible illiterate they dont even know that there are different bible versions.

Released in October 2011 by the Norwegian Bible Society, the new translation replaces a 1978 edition, with the goal of improving readability and accuracy. For example, in the older version, Mary was called a "virgin." In the new translation she is referred to instead as a "young" woman. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops also made this change in its latest Bible translation from 2011, saying the change didn't alter teaching about Mary, but was meant to address the possible different meanings of the Hebrew word "almah" in the text.

Norway's Bible Society promoted the new translation like a pop fiction novel, stirring anticipation by giving out teasers of biblical stories before its release.

It turned to poets and authors such as Knausgard to make the text sing and resonate for a new generation. And it was packaged in a variety of ways, targeting teenagers with pink leather or denim covers, and adults with bridal or sophisticated literary covers.

"It's easier to read," says Helga Haugland Byfuglien, presiding bishop for the Church of Norway. "There is no over-interpretation of the text."

It has sold nearly 160,000 copies and was Norway's best-selling book in 2012. Church officials concede that hefty marketing campaigns helped explain the strong sales.

Jesus committed to mental hospital
Like many other European nations, Norwegians have experienced decades of secularization as religion has taken a back seat to other pursuits. They are fiercely committed to jamming weekends with skiing, hiking and other outdoor activities, leaving little time other than Christmas or Easter to fill the pews.

Last year, Parliament unanimously decided to end the Lutheran church's status as the official state religion.

Erik Ulfsby, artistic director at Det Norske Teatret, which staged the "Bibelen" play, said that even if Norwegians don't go to church, they still see the Bible as an important part of their literary heritage.

"The (church) wants you to agree with their interpretation but the theater gives you the chance to think out loud and discuss the Bible," he said.

The play, directed by Stein Winge, certainly offered a nontraditional interpretation.

For instance, rather than dying on a cross, Jesus was committed to a mental hospital and eventually executed via lethal injection. And, at the wedding at Cana, show-goers saw Jesus portrayed as being drunk when he changed water to wine
.

"Bible" isn't the first religious production to have Norwegians at the edge of their seats. Renowned actor Svein Tindberg has staged three monologues based on the Bible, each more successful than the last.

In the mid-1990s, "Gospel of Mark" was slated to run for 20 nights but was such a hit that Tindberg performed 220 nights. His latest production, "Abraham's Children," opened last year and has sold 52,000 tickets, compared to expectations of 1,000 — outselling "Evita" in Norway.

Despite the unorthodox artistic interpretations that are emerging, religious authorities in Norway are embracing the concept of experiencing religion through art.

"Even if you don't believe the core of the message, the Bible has rich, meaningful stories," Byfuglien said. "Culture breaks the religious shyness that people have in association with the church and it's a way for those who have distanced themselves to experience it in an interesting way."
