Mormon Church apologizes for posthumous baptisms

The Mormon Church apologized Tuesday for a "serious breach of protocol" after it was discovered that the parents of the late Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal were posthumously baptized as Mormons. The church also acknowledged that one of its members tried to baptize posthumously three relatives of Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.

Posthumous baptism is common in the Mormon Church. The purpose is to ensure that ancestors can join church members in the afterlife. Individual Mormons submit to the church the names of persons they wish to have baptized, then undergo baptism "by proxy."

However, the practice has sometimes offended those of other faiths whose ancestors are baptized by proxy by enthusiastic Mormons. That is especially true of the families of Jewish victims of the Holocaust, whose outcries prompted the 1995 agreement. Although the Mormon Church now says its policy limits posthumous baptisms to direct ancestors of its members, it acknowledges that the policy is sometimes violated.

Claim: Mormons baptized Anne Frank

A new claim has surfaced that the Mormon Church posthumously baptized Holocaust victim Anne Frank.

The allegations come just a week after the church apologized when it was brought to light that the parents of Holocaust survivor and Jewish rights advocate Simon Wiesenthal were posthumously baptized last month at Mormon temples in Arizona and Utah.

Researcher Helen Radkey, a former Mormon who revealed the Wiesenthal baptisms, said this week she found Frank's name in proxy baptism records dated Feb. 18, showing the ritual was performed in the Santo Domingo Temple in the Dominican Republic.

In a statement, the Mormon Church does not mention Anne Frank but says proxy baptism for Holocaust victims violates church policy.

Frank was a Jewish teenager forced into hiding during the Holocaust and killed in a concentration camp. Her diary was published in 1947.

Mormons believe the baptism ritual allows deceased people a way to the afterlife.

The more I pay attention to it, the more I see the Mormon influence here in the Phoenix area. I asked a Mesa city worker one time what the deal was with Mesa city officials in general, as it seems they are inept at best, and his quick reply was to the point; "f.....g Mormons." Up to that point, God knows that our conversation had not in any way been about religion or anything close to it. We were talking about how the city was handling a water issue actually. I just asked what he thought Mesa government problems were, and that was his quick reply, without hesitation. Unless it was time and chance, it appears they have established more than a little influence here in the Valley. Only Utah has more temples than Arizona.

Mormon Church restricts access to Jewish names

Mormon leaders have put up a virtual firewall in their massive genealogical database to block anyone who attempts to access the names of hundreds of thousands of Holocaust victims.

The move comes amid criticism that the Salt Lake City-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hasn't done enough to live up to commitments to stop its members from performing the baptism ritual on Holocaust victims.

Mormons believe proxy baptism allows deceased people a way to the afterlife -- if they choose to accept it.

Jews are particularly offended by any attempt to alter the religion of Holocaust victims, who were killed because of their beliefs.

Critics say this week's move only serves to keep prying eyes at bay while the practice continues.
