To avert a new apocalypse – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint, or big guns. The tough part of either scheme is that time has long run out to build a spaceship for any operation.
 
­NASA confirms the 60-meter (197-feet) asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, has a good chance of colliding with Earth in eleven months.

The rock's closest approach to the planet is scheduled for February 15, 2013, when the distance between the planet and space wanderer will be under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is lower than the geosynchronous orbit kept by the Google Maps satellite.

That's the thing with these astroids. Even the scientists claim they only track a small percentage of the sky for falling rocks. And they admit that one could "appear" suddenly that they hadn't seen yet.

Yeah, that's the point - The 5 pretty much sums it up, these things will come SUDDENLY(and pretty much at a blink of an eye).

Well, according to the Trumpets, which I believe to be the first of the cosmic warnings to the inhabitants of the earth, we should be watching because one or more of any number of 'rogue' comets, meteorites or asteroids will be heading our way and will hit the earth.  Sometimes the 'news' seems to use the Bible as their play book, not because they believe it, but because they know many people do; whether or not they are true Christians or not, they do know what the Bible states and they like their 'ears to be tickled'.  In the end the news becomes sensationalized.  I'd like to think that some of these 'close calls' do wake some people up to the truth of God's Word.

When they tell us that these babies come every 800 years or so it has got to make one really think about the plan of God and how He guides everything.  That they are coming within our lifetime and during a time we feel is the cusp of the Day of the Lord, it gets even more intense and strangely wonderful.

March 5, 2012 – AUSTRALIA – A fiery meteor has lit up the sky over Victoria and Tasmania. The object, described as a glowing red fireball moving horizontally across the sky about 10.45pm (AEDT) on Sunday, was an unusual sight for this time of year, according to astronomer David Reneke. Observers say the meteor was visible for about 20 seconds. Professor Reneke says he and his colleagues are at a loss to explain the timing and exact nature of the meteor. It may have been a slow-moving piece of rock that ignited or a piece of space junk, he said. “It’s unprecedented, we don’t seem to be in a meteor shower period at the moment,’ Professor Reneke said. “(Fireballs) tend to be very slow moving and they travel more horizontally than vertically… if you ever see one, they stick in your mind for the rest of your life.” Professor Reneke says he has received dozens of reported sightings from across Victoria and Tasmania. Social network site Twitter was abuzz today with reports of the meteor. The phenomenon comes after a fireball was reported in skies over the United Kingdom on Saturday, with police inundated with calls from concerned residents, The Guardian reports. It is impossible to be sure if the sighted meteors in the UK and Australia are the same, Professor Reneke says. –News.au

Fireball over UK: Reports of a “bright light” and an “orange glow” were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm. The Met Office tweeted: “Hi All, for anyone seeing something in the night sky, we believe it was a meteorite.” A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said the force had been “inundated” with calls about a bright object in the sky across the west of Scotland. A Durham Police spokeswoman said a number of calls came in around 9.45pm from concerned members of public who had seen a “bright light or a fire in the sky” and believed it may have been incidents involving an aircraft. Police forces across the UK have been inundated with calls after what is believed to be a meteor was spotted in the sky. Reports of a “bright light” and an “orange glow” were received by police across Scotland and the north of England around 9.40pm. “The sightings are believed to be either an asteroid burning out or similar which has been restricted to the upper atmosphere only.” Grampian Police said reports of people seeing a “flare or a bright object with a tail” were received from across the region. And Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said numerous calls were made about a “large ball of fire in the sky” across Annandale and Eskdale. One user wrote on the force’s Facebook page: “It was awesome to see! Really big and bright!” Hundreds of people took to Twitter to report similar sightings across Scotland and the north of England. People described seeing a bright fireball moving across the sky with a large tail. The Kielder Observatory also reported the sighting of a “huge fireball” travelling from north to south over Northumberland at 9.41pm. An asteroid the size of a school bus gave Earth a close shave yesterday (May 13), passing well inside the orbit of the moon, but our planet was never in any danger of being hit.
 
The near-Earth asteroid 2012 JU, which is thought to be about 40 feet (12 meters) wide, came within 119,000 miles (191,500 kilometers) or so of our planet before zooming off into deep space, according to NASA's Near-Earth Object Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The moon orbits Earth at an average distance of 238,000 miles (382,900 km).
 
The asteroid-tracking office put together an animation of asteroid 2012 JU's orbit to illustrate its Sunday flyby. The space rock completes one lap around the sun every 3.2 years, according to a Near-Earth Object Program database.
 
Such close asteroid flybys aren't terribly uncommon.

(CNN) -- About 4,700 asteroids are close enough and big enough to pose a risk to Earth, NASA estimated Wednesday after studying data beamed back from an orbiting telescope.
 
The figure -- give or take 1,500 -- is how many space rocks bigger than 100 meters (330 feet) across are believed to come within 5 million miles (8 million km) of Earth, or about 20 times farther away than the moon.
 
"It's not something that people should panic about," said Amy Mainzer, an astronomer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. "However, we are paying attention to the issue."
 
NASA defines a potentially hazardous asteroid as one large enough to survive the intense heat generated by entry into the atmosphere and cause damage on a regional scale or worse. The figure released Wednesday is lower than a previous rough estimate had projected, but more are now thought to be in orbits inclined like Earth's, making them more likely to cross its path.

Hey guys, I have a question - Regarding Jeremiah 10:2(which Mark posted above) and Luke 21:25-26

Luk 21:25  And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Luk 21:26  Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

The reason why I'm asking this is b/c while we as Christians shouldn't be dismayed at the signs of heaven as Jeremiah 10:2 stated, at the same time Jesus says in the end times, there SHALL be these signs as discussed in Luke 21:25-26.

So how are both of these passages not only potentially tied together, but at the same time potentially different? And when we read news reports like this NASA one over potentially 4700 asteroids out there, does this mean it's a total lie and fabrication to scare the public, or should we look at it like potentially bible prophecy is coming to pass?
