14yr Old **** Victim Beaten to Death by Islamic Court

Hena Begum was a fourteen year old girl growing up in the Shariatpur region of Bangladesh until her forty year old cousin decided to **** her.

After she was raped, the rapist and his family then beat her until she was unconscious.

Next, the local Sharia (Islamic) courts ruled that yound Hena should receive 101 lashes for the crime of adultery — for the crime of being a child raped by an adult.

The Muslim clerics took the young girl, who still could not stand on her own, to a public square and proceeded to deliver the 101 lashes. After receiving 80 lashes, young Hena collapsed. Her family was allowed to take her to a hospital where she died from her wounds.

The child’s father, Dorbesh Khan, was also ordered to pay a fine equal to approximately $700 USD — quite a considerable sum in a nation which is suffering under the poverty which almost inevitably results from Islamic rule.

The rapist, a man known as Mahbub, was previously convicted of **** and sentenced to marry his **** victim. The **** victim from that encounter was one of the family members who helped beat young Hena unconscious before her “trial.” Mahbub has since disappeared in order to avoid punishment for this more recent ****.

What sort of people would beat a fourteen year old girl to death in a public square — and call it justice? This is not the sort of religious tolerance that I as a moral human being am willing to accept.

Hena tragedy outrageous Culprits must be punished

The way a **** victim in a remote village of Shariatpur, far from being redressed for the abuse she was subjected to, was whipped leading to her death has left us reeling from utter shock and outrage. We have no word to condemn the crime committed by the so-called village arbitration body that gave the order to lash the girl based on a fatwa issued by a village imam. In the same breath, we cannot but express our dismay over how such a barbaric medieval drama could be enacted under the very nose of the local administration. How could they be unaware of the High Court rule that declares fatwa illegal and unconstitutional?

The story of the adolescent girl, Hena's' molestation at the hands of her elder relative followed by her cruel murder by her own people is a stark reminder of the darkness of superstition and bigotry in which our rural society is caught up. In actuality, the half-literate village bigot whose fatwa was instrumental in murdering the hapless girl and the equally illiterate villagers who executed it, had hardly had any real understanding of the Islamic laws they claim to be championing. So, those responsible for the victim girl's tragic end committed a grave crime on more than one count: they misinterpreted Islam, violated the existing High Court's ruling on fatwa as well as contravened the law against violence on women and children.

The tragic incident has occurred despite the existence of the law to prevent repression on women and children and the presence of so many women right activists. That is enough to point to the poor level of implementation of the law on the one hand and the inadequacy of the rights groups to reach out to the poor and the vulnerable.

In the present case, those responsible for the Hena's tragic end to life should deserve no mercy. They should be caught and awarded the harshest punishment available under law.

Raped schoolgirl hangs herself

Kurigram, Feb 6 (bdnews24.com) — A **** victim of class VII has committed suicide nine days after being raped.

Ismat Ara, of Ghogadaha village under Kurigram Sadar Upazila, was raped by one Ershad Hossain, 24, of Satuatari village on Jan 27, alleged her family members.

Ismat hung herself on Sunday.

The body was brought to Kurigram Police Station for autopsy. Sadar police chief Mohammad Taharul Islam told bdnews24.com that he had heard of the **** and subsequent suicide.

Police have filed an unnatural death case, Taharul added.

Banijuddin, father of Ismat, told bdnews24.com that Ghogadaha union council member Deenbandhu, Ershad's cousin Kalam and others stopped him while he was heading towards the police station to file a **** case, the day after his daughter had been violated.

"They pledged to have Ershad marry Ismat and warned not to take legal action. But they 'forgot' the promise later," he said.

Ismat's father said they had compelled him to sign on a blank sheet of paper offering Tk 60,000 as compensation on Saturday night.

Banijuddin lamented that his daughter had committed suicide after hearing about the meeting.

Former Ghogadaha union chairman Alam said that the attempts to conceal Ismat's **** compelled her to commit suicide.

Cell phones of union chairman Abdul Malek and member Deenbandhu were found switched off during repeated attempts to contact them for comments.

Muslim Man Guilty of 'Honor Killing' in Daughter's Death

An Iraqi immigrant was found guilty of second degree murder today for running over his daughter, a crime motivated, prosecutors said, by the Arizona Muslim man's belief that the 20-year-old woman had become "too Westernized."

Women protesters were forced to have 'virginity checks' after being arrested in Tahrir Square

Women arrested by the Egyptian police during protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square were subjected to forced 'virginity tests', according to Amnesty International.

Eighteen demonstrators were detained after army officers cleared the square on March 9 at the end of weeks of protest.

Amnesty today said that the women had been beaten, given electric shocks and then subjected to strip searches while being photographed by male soldiers.

They were then given 'virginity checks' and threatened with prostitution charges if medics ruled they had had sex, according to the charity.

Obama, Islam, and the Forcible Virginity Test

Two months after Obama insisted that President Mubarak had to resign after 30 years in office for not being nice enough to the "young democracy demonstrators" in Tahrir Square, the New York Times has finally stated the obvious: the Muslim Brotherhood is winning the power struggle in Egypt. Duh. Ya think?

The media have also belatedly seen fit to print the fact that sixteen unmarried women were arrested in the demonstrations in Tahrir Square, and that Egyptian military submitted all sixteen to a compulsory "virginity test" in jail, just to see if they were properly modest Muslim virgins.

Think about the sadistic "logic" of that. To see if unmarried Muslim women were virgins, obedient to Islam, they were essentially humiliated, abused, and perhaps raped in public.

Will somebody please tell Germaine Greer? Or Helen Thomas? Christiane Ahmanpour? The nearest Women's Studies Department at your local university? Or are their phones busy again, and they're not paying attention? Maybe they're afraid of "Islamophobia"?

Those Cairo cops represent the forces of law and order in Egypt, the same forces we are expecting to work out an enlightened, democratic regime after Hosni Mubarak. That "virginity test" shows what this Muslim revolution is about. It's not about Jeffersonian democracy. It is all about the never-ending failure of Islam to come to terms with civilized values, the ones the West chose two centuries ago during the period called the Enlightenment.

A Brisbane woman is suing a five-star hotel in the United Arab Emirates after she was drugged and raped by co-workers and jailed for eight months.

In a landmark case, Alicia Gali, 29, is seeking compensation from her former employer, Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, for breaching its workplace duty of care.

In June 2008 Ms Gali had her drink spiked and was raped by up to four co-workers while working as a beauty salon manager at the international resort.

When she reported the assault to authorities she was jailed on an adultery charge and spent eight months in prison because it is illegal in the UAE to have sex outside marriage.

Australian embassy staff advised Ms Gali and her family not to go to the media during her time in custody, when she was locked in a cell with 30 other women.

She was pardoned and released in March 2009.

Ms Gali alleges the hotel failed to protect staff against assault and its legal consequences.

She says the resort encouraged workers to drink illegally at its staff bar despite strict laws and the requirement of drinking permits.

"I thought I would be safe and protected in an international hotel group," she said in a statement.

"They didn't give me the correct advice and didn't help me when I was charged and imprisoned."

Ms Gali says the harrowing ordeal should be a warning to others.

"I still feel angry and upset. It's distressing because I was a victim in all this and I was punished," she said.

"The UAE is being promoted hugely here as a tourism destination - they sponsor things here.

"They are not complying with human rights, women's rights and migrant workers' rights."

Nightmare continues

Ms Gali's lawyer Melissa Payne says her client suffers severe post traumatic stress disorder, nightmares, flash backs, depression and claustrophobia.

Ms Payne says the incident could have been avoided.

She says the hotel should have had segregated secure quarters for female employees and provide adequate induction training on the local laws and customs.

"When she reported the assault to the human resources manager he did not advise her of the potential consequences of reporting that assault," she said.

"Alicia's employer has let her down in the most terrible, terrible of ways. A company like this should know better.

"The resort promotes itself as paradise on Earth... it wasn't paradise for Alicia."

Ms Payne says the law firm is still preparing its case and will consult UAE legal experts, human rights and labour law experts.

"There was never a prosecution against anyone for sexual assault or ****," she said.

Safety

But Trey Maurice from the international umbrella group Starwood Hotels, which owns the resort, says safety and security of staff is a paramount priority.

Mr Maurice says the management of the resort was aware of the unfortunate circumstances and provided support and assistance to Ms Gali and her family during her imprisonment.

Ms Payne said her client delayed the lawsuit until she had recovered psychologically.

English Woman Raped in Dubai Hotel By Waiter Only To Be Arrested With Her Fiancé for Illegal Drinking and Sex Before Marriage

We have another outrage under Sharia law. In Dubai, a 23-year-old woman from London was assaulted by a waiter in a hotel toilet. She was celebrating her engagement with her boyfriend. The Muslim woman of Pakistani descent and her boyfriend went to the police and were themselves promptly arrested for “illegal drinking” and having sex outside of marriage.

During the police interview, the woman admitted to sharing a hotel room with her 44-year-old fiancé and sharing a few drinks in celebration of their upcoming marriage. The couple is facing a six-year charge on the sex allegation alone.

The **** occurred at the Dubai Marina’s Address Hotel after the waiter followed the woman to the Ladies Room. Her fiancé is said to have been unaware of the attack and helped her to their room, where they slept until the next day. It was then that she reported the ****.

We have seen other women flogged for drinking a beer in public under Sharia law, here. We have also seen shocking mistreatment of **** victims and even tacit support for rapists under Sharia law, here and here and here and here and here.

Sharia Court in Malaysia Sentences Woman to Be Flogged For Drinking a Beer at a Nightclub

A Sharia court in Malaysia has sentenced part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, to be flogged for drinking a beer at a nightclub. In Malaysia, only Muslims can be flogged for alcohol consumption and the government turns over the accused to the Sharia courts to mete out their own Islamic justice.

Shukarno pleaded guilty to drinking the beer at a nightclub in 2008.

While caning is usually reserved for men, this court felt that the woman needed six lashes with a rattan cane and a fine for consuming alcohol. We have, however, seen other cases of women sentenced to flogging as part of Islamic justice, here and here and here.

In Saudi Arabia, even having coffee with a women can result in flogging, here.

It never fails to amaze me how a nation like Malaysia can maintain such laws. First, the nation has a law that only criminalizes conduct of citizens of a single religion. I will not venture to guess how police knows that a woman is a Muslim (as opposed to a Christian who can drank openly) or why someone cannot simply claim to be a Christian. I assume that their identification has their religious faith. Second, the government makes religious courts an extension of its legal system with the ability to mete out corporal punishment.

U.S. Merely “Astonished” by the Planned Flogging of a **** Victim in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi government is attempting to dampen the international outrage over a sentence of 200 lashes and six months in prison for a **** victim.   The U.S. government issues a statement that expressed barely concern.

The 19-year-old and an unrelated man were abducted from a car and she was raped by a group of seven men.  Her attorney  Abdulrahman al-Lahim earned the ire of the court when he went public with the news that she was given a sentence of 90 lashes in October 2006.  The Qatif General Court in response increased the punishment to 200 lashes and six months in prison by the Qatif General Court for speaking with the press.  Al-Lahims’ license was revoked.

Now the Saudi  Ambassador to the United States, Adel al-Jubeir is insisting that the case is working through the system and that there are some undisclosed facts that led to the increase in sentence.  One can only wonder what facts would justify flogging a **** victim.  Notably, the Saudi government had no criticism of the judges who handed down this sentence.

What is equally unnerving is the mild reaction of the United States government to this insult to the rule of law.  State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said U.S. officials had “expressed our astonishment” at the sentence.  Wow, now there is a strong statement after a **** victim is gang raped and then sentenced to flogging.

Lattes and Lashes: Saudi Religious Police Defend Their Arrest of American Woman Who Sat Next to a Man at a Starbucks

Saudi Arabia’s legal system has long been a nightmare for civil libertarians and anyone on this side of the dark ages. However, in the face of the arrest and coerced confession of an American businesswoman for sitting next to man at Starbucks (who was not a relative), the religious police is defending its action in the case. It appears that it was the woman’s fault entirely for committing the offense to Islam — a helpful clarification from those who bring us weekly examples of why the separation of church and state is so essential for liberty.

An American businesswoman named Yara (she is withholding her last name) was arrested, strip searched and forced to sign a false confession after she was captured in the act of sitting with a male at a Starbucks in Riyadh.

Ironically, Yara had just been at the Starbucks with Neil Bush, President George W. Bush’s younger brother and CEO of the education software company Ignite! and even boasted about Saudi justice. She is a managing partner at a Saudi financial company, but it did not help her when she was spotted by the Saudi “Mutaween” police.

The 37-year-old mother of three was wearing an abaya and a headscarf, but she violated the rule of women sitting with non-family males. Because Starbucks has WiFi, it is popular for such business meetings. She had just opened her laptop when the police swooped in.

She was immediately accused of committing a great “sin” by members of the Saudi Arabia’s Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

Yara said she treated roughly, yelled at, strip searched and forced to sign a confession. She then went people a Saudi “judge” who duly informed her that she would “burn in hell.”

Rather than denounce this abuse, the Saudi police have issued a statement heralding their achievement in catching the Starbucks siren. (The man of course was released). What is curious is that they seem to be trying to convince people that this is all in accord with the letter and spirit of the law:

“It’s not allowed for any woman to travel alone and sit with a strange man and talk and laugh and drink coffee together like they are married . . . All of these are against the law and it’s clear it’s against the law. First, for a woman to work with men is against the law and against religion. Second, the family sections at coffee shops and restaurants are meant for families and close relatives,” it continued.

The Commission further denied the strip search and the coerced confession. According to them, an American businesswoman confessed on her own accord to this medieval offense. It further accused her of the sin of wearing makeup, not covering her hair and “moving around suspiciously” in the coffee shop.

Now the entire family is “afraid for our lives, for our family and from further harassment.” They are considering a return to the United States.

The government is also moving against journalists who have reported this latest absurd product of the Saudi legal system: “The Commission has the right to sue the writers because of the lies they are spreading. It gives the wrong idea of Saudi Arabia.” Two columnists are being targeted.

The question is when western companies will take a stand in support of their own employees and formally object to these actions. Of course, the Bush Administration has been virtually silent in the face of this and past abuses of women and criminal defendants in the Saudi system.

For the latest on this story, click here http://jonathanturley.org/2008/02/19/lashes-and-lattes-saudi-religious-police-defend-their-arrest-of-american-woman-who-sat-next-to-a-man-at-a-starbucks/

Somalia Sharia Justice: Court Sentences **** Victim to Death While Gang Rapists Laugh as They are Given Light Flogging

In Mogadishu, Somalia, gang rapists laughed as they were publicly flogged under orders from a Sharia judge. However, they were light flogging through their clothes that did not break their skin. They laughed as people watched the largely symbolic flogging. In the meantime, last October the Sharia court sentenced a **** victim to death by stoning.

Judge Abdul Haq insisted that punishment was warranted in the case of the gang rapists but, putting aside the light flogging, there remains a shocking difference in the treatment of women and men in this and other Islamic nations applying the harshest form of Sharia law, here.

Efforts to get the United Nations to address the obvious abuse of women under Sharia law in some of these countries has been blocked by Islamic countries, as shown in this clip where a NGO witness was harassed and ultimately prevented from presenting arguments.

Saudi Arabian Judge Sentences Pregnant Gang **** Victim to Jail and 100 Lashes

A Saudi judge in Jeddah has again given the world a taste of law under the country’s medieval Sharia system. A 23-year-old pregnant woman who complained about being gang raped has been found guilty of adultery (even though she is not married) and ordered that she serve one year in jail and receive 100 lashes.

The woman said that she accepted a ride from a man who took her to a house in Jeddah where she was gang **** by him and his four friends all night. In an act of mercy, the Saudis will allow her to have the baby first and then flog her.

The woman’s “crime” was revealed at the hospital when she sought an abortion.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly punished **** victims under Sharia law, here and here..

In a fascinating interview, one reporters explored the view of some Saudi men that it is perfectly appropriate to **** a woman traveling alone or with a non-family member.

**** victims have been stoned to death or jailed in other countries following Sharia.

Even in more modern nations like Turkey, **** victims can face “honor killings” by family members.

Islamic Court in Somalia Orders Men to Stone to Death 13-Year-Old **** Victim for Adultery

The stoning death of Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow for adultery in Somalia was disturbing enough, particularly after the local cleric said that Duhulow asked for the stoning. Now, Amnesty International has reported that Duholow was not 23, as claimed, but only 13 years old and had been raped by three men. BBC reports that these grown men slowly stoned her to death as the little girl begged “Don’t Kill Me, Don’t Kill Me.” A signature moment for these Sharia courts.

Over a 1000 people gathered in a stadium in the port city of Kismayo, Somalia to watch dozens of men stone the little girl to death.

Afghan Justice: **** Victims Jailed for Illegal Sexual Contacts

Afghan justice was once again on display with a recent visit of journalists who visited a women’s prison in Lashkar Gah where two-thirds of the women were convicted of illegal sex offenses with many simply being victims of ****.

In the last two years, Afghanistan has moved steadily back to the medieval Islamic traditions enforced by the Taliban, including the treatment of women and girls as virtual chattel under the control of males. This story in The Independent reveals how women are being given 10 or 20 year sentences for moral offenses and many were simply victims of **** — a common crime in the area.

The Taliban, in the meantime, continues its own reign of terror using executions under the guise of Sharia justice, click here.

Despite the outrages committed by our ally, no one in the Administration appears to be bothered enough to speak out against the mistreatment of women and girls in the country.

Women Publicly Flogged In Indonesia For Selling Rice During Ramadan

Murni Amris, 27, and Rukiah Abdullah, 22, are the latest women to be flogged under Sharia law. Their crime in Indonesia? Selling food during Ramadan.

The public caning occurred at a mosque before hundreds of onlookers in the city of Jantho.

The women were spotted selling rice at noon during Ramadan when the faithful are expected to fast. This would not have been a crime before 2005 when Sharia law was introduced in Aceh.

One of the Sharia regulations states: “Whosoever prepares facilities for Muslims that do not fulfill religious standards during the fasting month of Ramadan faces either a year in jail, a fine of Rp 3 million ($340) or being caned in front of an audience for a maximum of six times.”

Islam is certainly not a religion of peace in any way whatsoever.  I've read the Koran.  It is an anti-Christ religion.

Only 14, girl charged with adultery was lashed to death

Hena Akhter's last words to her mother proclaimed her innocence. But it was too late to save the 14-year-old girl.

Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public.

Hena dropped after 70.

Bloodied and bruised, she was taken to hospital, where she died a week later.

Amazingly, an initial autopsy report cited no injuries and deemed her death a suicide. Hena's family insisted her body be exhumed. They wanted the world to know what really happened to their daughter.

Hena's family hailed from rural Shariatpur, crisscrossed by murky rivers that lend waters to rice paddies and lush vegetable fields.

Hena was the youngest of five children born to Darbesh Khan, a day laborer, and his wife, Aklima Begum. They shared a hut made from corrugated tin and decaying wood and led a simple life that was suddenly marred a year ago with the return of Hena's cousin Mahbub Khan.

Mahbub Khan came back to Shariatpur from a stint working in Malaysia. His son was Hena's age and the two were in seventh grade together.

Khan eyed Hena and began harassing her on her way to school and back, said Hena's father. He complained to the elders who run the village about his nephew, three times Hena's age.

The elders admonished Mahbub Khan and ordered him to pay $1,000 in fines to Hena's family. But Mahbub was Darbesh's older brother's son and Darbesh was asked to let the matter fade.

Many months later on a winter night, as Hena's sister Alya told it, Hena was walking from her room to an outdoor toilet when Mahbub Khan gagged her with cloth, forced her behind nearby shrubbery and beat and raped her.

Hena struggled to escape, Alya told CNN. Mahbub Khan's wife heard Hena's muffled screams and when she found Hena with her husband, she dragged the teenage girl back to her hut, beat her and trampled her on the floor.

The next day, the village elders met to discuss the case at Mahbub Khan's house, Alya said. The imam pronounced his fatwa. Khan and Hena were found guilty of an illicit relationship. Her punishment under sharia or Islamic law was 101 lashes; his 201.

Mahbub Khan managed to escape after the first few lashes.

Pakistan 'blasphemy' law used against kids

Pakistan's notorious "blasphemy" laws can put even children at risk, and Christians say the days when they could teach their offspring pat answers to protect them from accusations of disparaging Islam or its prophet seem to have passed.

A 30-year-old Pakistani woman who grew up in Lahore said her Christian parents taught her formula answers to keep from falling prey to accusations under the blasphemy statutes, such as "I am a Christian, I can only tell you about Him." But even then, before militant Islamists began influencing Pakistani society as they have in recent years, schoolchildren were taught not to discuss religion, she said.

"We knew never to get into religious discussions with others," she said. "We had them at home -- our parents would put us through the drill of asking us tough questions to see how we answered. Only now I realize that was practice for school."

In this way, she was imbued with the fundamentals of the Christian faith and at the same time learned that she should discuss it only with her parents, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Though the Christian faith is inherently evangelistic, the blasphemy laws have made people silent, she added. The blasphemy statutes signal to non-Muslims that they are second-class or "dhimmi" status citizens who must stay within narrow social boundaries, leave or be killed, she said.

"Christians constantly face questions like, 'What do you think of the Quran, do you like it?' and, 'What do you think of Muhammad?'" she said. "One answer is, 'As a Christian I have only read the Bible, I can't read Arabic.' These questions used to be easier to answer, we had formulas. But those are not working any more. We just tell children 'Don't talk about religion in school.' This is shaky ground now."

She added, "Some parents don't even tell their children about Jesus, because they are scared they will go to school and say something wrong. One street kid did not know anything except about the blasphemy law. When her mother was asked why she did not teach her daughter about Jesus instead of the blasphemy law, she replied, 'If I tell her too much, she will talk about it on the street, and someone will kill her or charge her with blasphemy.'"

The street child, she said, was afraid to tell her what church she attended.

"She said the mullah in the shop behind us was listening, and as she said that, I saw the man nearly fall off his chair from trying to listen to us," she said.

An entire generation, Christians fear, is growing up not knowing their faith for fear that it will lead to potentially disastrous schoolyard talk. Moreover, children required to take Islamic studies in school are in danger with a single misstep.

"If they write anything or misspell anything to do with the prophet Muhammad, they can be in serious danger," the source said. "In fact, the other side of this is that they are made to answer questions saying what a wonderful man he was."

Christian kids in predominantly Muslim areas don't have friends to play with, as even a cricket game can be risky, she said. Adults are equally fearful.

"People in offices are silenced into submission," she said. "The fear is creating aggression."

Conviction under Section 295-C of Pakistan's blasphemy law for derogatory comments about Muhammad is punishable by death, though life imprisonment is also possible. Curiously, accusers in blasphemy cases cannot repeat the alleged derogatory comments without risk of being accused of blasphemy themselves.

A district court judge last November stunned the nation and the international community by handing down a death sentence to a Christian mother of five for allegedly speaking ill of Muhammad.

Subsequently three politicians spoke out against the blasphemy law that put Asia Noreen (also called Asia Bibi) in prison. Two of them have been killed for standing up for Noreen and against the blasphemy law. One is in hiding for fear of her life.

Noreen, mother of two children and stepmother to three others, has been in prison in solitary confinement since June 2009, accused of having blasphemed against Muhammad, after a verbal disagreement with some women in the village of Ittanwali, near Lahore. If she is released from prison, her life will be at risk. Her husband and children are on the run, receiving constant threats from Muslims who say they will take justice into their own hands.

Suspected Islamic militants in Faisalabad shot dead two Christians about to be acquitted of blasphemy charges on July 19, 2010. The Rev. Rashid Emmanuel, 32, and his 30-year-old brother Sajid Emmanuel were shot days after handwriting experts on July 14 notified police that signatures on papers denigrating Muhammad did not match those of the accused. Expected to be exonerated, the two leaders of United Ministries Pakistan were being led in handcuffs under police custody back to jail when they were shot.

Christian Lawyers' Foundation President Khalid Gill said the two bodies bore cuts and other signs of having been tortured, including marks on their faces, while the brothers were in police custody.

For secular-educated Pakistanis, the blasphemy law has come to symbolize the measure to which militant Islam has overtaken society. In the span of three months, Islamists murdered two of the nation's most outspoken leaders against the blasphemy law. On Jan. 4 Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab Province, was murdered, and on March 2 parliamentarian Shabaz Bhatti, who as federal minister for minority affairs was the only Christian cabinet member, was assassinated in Islamabad.

Pakistan is moving increasingly towards a state driven by fear of militants, where even moderate politicians make conservative choices to appease Islamist threats, according to Sara Taseer Shoaib, daughter of the late Taseer.

"Pakistan is definitely becoming more right-wing and extremist when it comes to religion," she said. "Religious parties are gaining a cult following, and even moderate leaders are trying to gain popularity and votes by taking a right-wing position."

The reasons for this shift, she said, are many: issues like defense of the blasphemy law serve to deflect attention from the real issues of poverty and lack of hope; there is an increasing trend to blame all woes on the West; and there is a prevailing sense of a need to defend Islam as the perception remains that it is under global attack.

Iran cleric: Killing Israeli children OK

Iranian Ayatollah endorses evil: Radical religious cleric known as President Ahmadinejad's spiritual mentor says attacks on Israeli civilians permissible, suicide bombings a Muslim duty

Evil words in Islamic Republic: A senior Iranian cleric, who is known as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's spiritual mentor, urged followers to continue suicide attacks against Israelis, including children.

Ayatollah Mohammad Taghi Mesbah, considered one of the Islamic Republic's most radical clerics, issued a religious edict on his website whereby suicide attacks are not only legitimate but are a must for every Muslim, a special paper by the Middle East Media Research Institute shows.

The senior cleric was responding to a question from a follower regarding the difference between "martyr's death" and "suicide." The man, who wrote anonymously, noted that "some people say that martyrdom operations are considered suicide and that they are haram (forbidden) because they contradict Islam."

In response, Mesbah expressed his regret that his follower has fallen victim to "propaganda of the enemies of Islam." He added that the follower was wasting his time instead of focusing on "uprooting the Zionist regime."

"When protecting Islam, the Muslim people depend on martyrdom operations. It not only is allowed, but even is an obligation," Mesbah wrote.

The follower presented another question regarding Islam's position on harming Israelis, wondering whether Hamas and Jihad actions against Israeli civilians are forbidden. He also asked: "How about the Israeli children killed in such attacks?"

Muslim says chopping off hands 'compassionate'
Advocates Islamic law as standard for all Egyptians

Some Western analysts suspect the "democratic" revolution in Egypt is a front for an Islamic takeover, and now a report has surfaced that a key Egyptian cleric, Mas'oud Anwar, has advocated for adoption of Islamic law as the nation's new standard.

WND previously has reported how Muslims in Egypt are becoming more aggressive in their attacks on Christians and Christian churches.

The presentation by Anwar, on Al-Rahma Television, explains how imposing draconian penalties such as chopping hands off suspected thieves and stoning for adultery is "compassionate."

"The punishment decreed by the Shariah (Islamic law) serve as deterrents," Anwar explained, according to a report from the Middle East Media Research Institute. The organization monitors and reports on media in the region.

Anwar explained the logic of Shariah:

"If someone contemplates fornication, but then he sees that on Friday, at Al-Tahrir Square, the police caught an unmarried fornicator, gave him 100 lashings and the entire thing was broadcast live on TV… Would he dare to commit fornication? He would say to himself: 'Oh my God, I don't need this.' He'd say: 'I'd better fast, like the Prophet Muhammad instructed.' That's it."

Continued Anwar, "If the Islamic punishment is implemented, the alcoholics will go to jail. Take a highway robber, a criminal, or a drug dealer – the haraba punishment on him [an Islamic punishment: to be put to death, or crucified, or have an arm and a leg chopped off on alternative sides, or to be banished]. That way, the world will be clean and more organized. […]

"My Muslim brothers, the compassion about which the secular speak, when they say that there is no compassion in Islamic law and that its punishments are barbaric, is nothing but ludicrous compassion," he said.

"Wisdom and compassion require that a killer be put to death, that a married adulterer be stoned, and that the hand of a thief be chopped off. That is true compassion. Chopping off the treacherous hand of a thief, to protect the entire nation, is compassion, mercy, and wisdom. "

Anwar said the West could benefit from the application of Shariah.

"I have with me statistics on crime in the West and in Arab countries, including Egypt. These figures are alarming. Why is there a rise in crime? Why is there an increasing number of prisons and prisoners! It is because the Shariah is not implemented."

Anwar said, "The thief is a cancer in society, and so are all the sinners. Their treatment is to be punished in accordance with the strict, judicious, and merciful law of Allah. The chopping off of a single treacherous hand guarantees the safety of the country and society in its entirety – it guarantees its security, its blood, its money, and its honor. That is what compassion means."

He likened crime to disease.

"Brothers, may God bless all the Muslims with good health. Take somebody who is told that he has cancer in his arm, and when he goes to the doctor, the doctor tells him that the only way to prevent his death is to amputate his arm. What is left for him to do? He holds his arm out to the doctor, and the doctor amputates it. When the patient awakens from the anesthesia, he says to the doctor: 'May Allah reward you, you saved my life.' The amputation is an act of mercy, and the patient thanks the doctor for it."

"And you tell me that Islamic law is barbaric? What barbarism? It is full of compassion," he said.

MEMRI also reported that there have been a growing number of "clashes" between Muslims and Coptic Christians, and "attacks on Coptic churches have increased."

In March, there were riots in Sol and in the Helwan Governorate, as well as attacks by Salafist Muslims who cut off the ear of a Christian.

In April, a quarrel over a building sparked clashes that saw a number of homes belonging to Christians burned. And in May, Muslims demonstrated against the opening of a church.

More than a dozen Christians were killed and hundreds wounded, the reports said.

There have been numerous demonstrations throughout Egypt since then.

The regional Hurriyet Daily News quoted the Muslim Brotherhood explaining that concerns about an Islamic state to replace the regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak are unnecessary.

For one thing, said Ashraf Abdel Ghaffar, a leader of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Shariah already is in the Egyptian constitution.

"If you go to any court in Egypt, they implement Shariah first. This is more than enough for us," he told the Daily News.

But at the CreepingSharia blog, an analysis contended that the riots in Egypt had nothing to do with "democracy."

"Their version of freedom means voting in Islamic law," the commentary said. "Seventy-seven percent of Egyptians approved constitutional amendments drafted in part by the radical Muslim Brotherhood.

"The platform of the Cairo-based Brotherhood's new Freedom and Justice Party – as pleasing as the name may sound to Western ears – bars women and Christians from the presidency. It also establishes a board of Muslim clerics (read: Talibanesque mullahs) to oversee the government."

Another leading Muslim Brotherhood figure, Sobhi Saleh, was straightforward about the plans.

"Islamic Shariah is the best system for Muslims and non-Muslims," he said.

UPDATE

Egypt general defends protester virginity tests: Amnesty

A top Egyptian military official said virginity tests were needed for female protesters to head off possible charges of ****, Amnesty International reported on Sunday.

The subject was raised by the London-based rights group's chief, Salil Shetty, at a meeting in the Egyptian capital with the head of military intelligence, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

"He said virginity tests were carried out to protect the army against possible allegations of ****, and added that the army does not intend to detain women again," an Amnesty statement said.

Sisi is a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), to which president Hosni Mubarak transferred power when he was ousted on February 11.

The general is the first identified Egyptian military official to acknowledge that forced virginity tests have taken place.

On May 31, Amnesty called on the authorities in Egypt to bring to justice those responsible for forced virginity tests on female protesters, slamming it as "nothing less than torture."

Amnesty's statement came after an apparent admission by an unnamed army general to CNN that women detained on March 9 in Cairo's Tahrir Square had been subjected to virginity tests.

A senior military official on May 31 denied to AFP reports that the army had conducted such tests, saying "these allegations are baseless."

Amnesty opposes forced virginity tests under any circumstances.

"Sisi said people alleging abuses should complain to the military prosecutor and could also post their complaints on the SCAF Facebook page," the Amnesty statement said.

Dispute over Muslim headwear sends scores of police to Playland; 10 arrested

A large disturbance broke out at Playland Park today when Muslim visitors got angry that the park was enforcing its ban on headgear by prohibiting the women from wearing their traditional head coverings on some rides.

Police from at least nine other agencies converged on the park beginning at 3 p.m. after county police sought assistance in responding to the disturbance, which involved about 30 to 40 people. At least 10 park visitors were arrested, mostly for disorderly conduct, and two park rangers were injured, authorities said.

The park was crowded with Muslims celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, one of Islam's two major holidays. Most were from community groups around New York City as part of a day-long event arranged by the Muslim American Society of New York.

Parks officials had “painstakingly” told the organizer about the headgear ban, said parks spokesman Peter Tartaglia, but he said that the rules might not have been communicated by the organizer to some attendees. The ban was implemented about four years ago to keep hats and other head coverings from landing on tracks and derailing rides.

“It’s a safety issue on rides. If it’s a scarf, you could choke,” Tartaglia said.

Accounts of what had happened varied, but everyone agreed the dispute began after park-goers were told the headgear ban applied to women wearing traditional Muslim head coverings, known as hijabs.

Tartaglia said once word of that got out there were “a lot of unhappy people.”

He said park officials were in the process of arranging refunds when members of the Muslim group got into a scuffle with each other.

The two rangers, seasonal county police employees, were hurt trying to break it up, he said. He said one suffered an injured knee and the other an injured shoulder.

Lola Ali, 16, of Astoria said she had witnessed a group of girls and women wearing hijabs go to park security to confront them about the headgear issue.

She said the women were upset and yelling. She said the security officers started pushing them away and the girls stood their ground, at which point the security officers grabbed them, pushed them to the ground and handcuffed them.
