AP poll: Police killings of blacks voted top story of 2014
12/22/14

NEW YORK (AP) — The police killings of unarmed blacks in Ferguson, Missouri, and elsewhere — and the investigations and tumultuous protests they inspired — was the top news story of 2014, according to The Associated Press' annual poll of U.S. editors and news directors.

In a year crowded with dramatic and often wrenching news developments around the world, the No. 2 story was the devastating outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, followed by the conflict in Iraq and Syria fueled by the brutal actions of Islamic State militants.

Among the 85 voters casting ballots, first-place votes were spread among 15 different stories. The Ferguson entry received 22 first-place votes, Ebola 11 and the Islamic State story 12.

The voting was conducted before the announcement that the United States and Cuba were re-establishing diplomatic relations and Sony Pictures' decision to withdraw its film "The Interview" in the wake of computer hacking and threats.

Last year's top story was the glitch-plagued rollout of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, followed by the Boston Marathon bombing. The continuing saga of "Obamacare" made this year's Top 10 as well, coming in fifth.

The first AP top-stories poll was conducted in 1936, when editors chose the abdication of Britain's King Edward VIII.

Here are 2014's top 10 stories, in order:

POLICE KILLINGS: Some witnesses said 18-year-old Michael Brown had his hands up in surrender, others said he was making a charge. But there was no dispute he was unarmed and shot dead by a white police officer in Ferguson. In New York City, another unarmed black, Eric Garner, was killed after a white officer put him in a chokehold during an arrest for unauthorized cigarette sales. After grand juries opted not to indict the officers, protests erupted across the country, punctuated by chants of "Hands up, don't shoot" and "I can't breathe." In both cases, federal officials launched investigations.

EBOLA OUTBREAK: The first wave of Ebola deaths, early in the year, attracted little notice. By March, the World Health Organization was monitoring the outbreak. By midsummer, it was the worst Ebola epidemic on record, with a death toll now approaching 7,000, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. A Liberian man with the disease died at a Dallas hospital, followed by a few other cases involving U.S. health workers, sparking worries about the readiness of the U.S. health system.

ISLAMIC STATE: Militant fighters from the Islamic State group startled the world with rapid, brutal seizures of territory in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. and its allies responded with air strikes, hoping that Iraqi and Kurdish forces on the ground could retake captured areas. Revulsion toward Islamic State intensified as it broadcast videos of its beheadings of several Western hostages.

US ELECTIONS: For months, political oddsmakers sought to calculate if Republicans had a chance to gain control of the U.S. Senate. It turned out there was no suspense — the GOP won 54 of the Senate's 100 seats, expanded its already strong majority in the House of Representatives, and gained at the state level, where Republicans now hold 31 governorships.

OBAMACARE: Millions more Americans signed up to be covered under President Obama's health care initiative, but controversy about "Obamacare" raged on. Criticism from Republicans in Congress was relentless, many GOP-governed states balked at participation, and opinion polls suggested most Americans remained skeptical about the program.

MALAYSIA AIRLINES MYSTERY: En route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board. In the weeks that followed, aircraft, ships and searchers from two-dozen countries mobilized to look in vain for the wreckage on the Indian Ocean floor. To date, there's no consensus as to why the plane vanished.

IMMIGRATION: Frustrated by an impasse in Congress, President Obama took executive actions in November to curb deportations for many immigrants residing in the U.S. illegally. GOP leaders in the House and Senate pledged efforts to block the president's moves. Prospects for reform legislation were dimmed earlier in the year by the influx of unaccompanied Central American minors arriving at the U.S. border, causing shelter overloads and case backlogs.

TURMOIL IN UKRAINE: A sometimes bloody revolt that toppled President Viktor Yanukovych in February triggered a chain of events that continued to roil Ukraine as the year drew to a close. Russia, worried that Ukraine would tilt increasingly toward the West, annexed the Crimean peninsula in March and backed an armed separatist insurgency in coal-rich eastern regions of Ukraine. The U.S. and its allies responded with sanctions against Russia.

GAY MARRIAGE: Due to a wave of federal court rulings, 19 more U.S. states began allowing same-sex marriages, raising the total to 35 states encompassing about 64 percent of the population. Given that one U.S. court of appeals bucked the trend by upholding state bans on gay marriage, there was widespread expectation that the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the issue and make a national ruling.

VA SCANDAL: The Department of Veterans Affairs became embroiled in a nationwide scandal over allegations of misconduct and cover-ups. Several senior officials were fired or forced to resign, including VA Secretary Eric Shinseki. At the heart of the scandal was the VA hospital in Phoenix; allegations surfaced that 40 veterans died while awaiting treatment there.

Man Charged For ‘Put Wings On Pigs’ Facebook Post

The war ramps up...

A Chicopee man is facing charges after posting “Put Wings on Pigs” to Facebook, police say.

Chicopee police said Monday that local residents alerted them to the “very disturbing post” by Charles DiRosa.

On Saturday, two New York police officers were killed by a gunman while sitting in their police cruiser. The suspect, who then killed himself, had posted “I’m putting wings on pigs today” on social media, according to officials.

“After the events of the past few days, the PD took this threat very seriously,” Chicopee police wrote on Facebook.

DiRosa will be summonsed to court for Threat To Commit a Crime, police said.

They are pushing the race war. Funnily Debameo een admited that the MEDIA was to blame for it.

De Blasio was clearly pained and jarred by the police executions Saturday, but he left the indignation to Bratton. The angriest moment de Blasio has mustered since the weekend was on Monday, and it was directed at the press.

“What are you guys going to do?” he asked, his voice rising, as he accused reporters of amplifying the few bad actors among the protestors. “Are you going to keep dividing us?”

With not enough blood on his hands Sharpton keeps pushing...

Sharpton Ignores Call To Halt Protests Until After NYPD Funerals
"Is a vigil a protest?"

Al Sharpton will ignore New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's call to suspend protests until after the funerals of the two slain New York City police officers.

"Is a vigil a protest?" Sharpton asked during a telephone interview with Reuters. "Is a rally?" he added.

According to Reuters, Sharpton called de Blasio's plea "an ill-defined request." Sharpton indicated that he is going ahead with planned prayer vigils at the scene of Eric Garner's death and other scheduled events with the Garner family.

Joining Sharpton in criticizing the mayor's request is war and racism activist group Answer Coalition. As reported, they said suspending protests would be "outrageous" and would put a "chill" on free expression.

On Monday, de Blasio encouraged his city to hold off any protests until after the funerals of officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu who were killed execution-style in their patrol car by a black man avenging the death's of Garner and Michael Brown:

It's a time for everyone to put aside political debates, put aside protests, put aside all of the things we will talk about in due time.

City Prepares Lawsuit Against 'Black Lives Matter' Protest Organizers
Mall of America shutdown cost venders and city a "staggering" amount

Bloomington City Attorney Sandra Johnson expects to file criminal charges against “Black Lives Matter” organizers responsible for the protest that shut down the Mall of America Saturday, CBS Minnesota reports.

Despite repeated warnings from officials that the mall was private property, “Black Lives Matter” organizers carried out the protest during one of the most important shopping days of the year. A flood of protestors converged on the MOA rotunda Saturday, forcing a shutdown of around 80 stores for about two hours.

Now protest leaders face paying a high price for what the city maintains are illegal actions. Johnson says the losses in sales and the cost to the city will be “staggering.” Mall officials are currently gathering estimates of losses from the stores affected while the city is calculating the costs for overtime put in by police.

“This was a powder keg just waiting for a match,” said Johnson. “The main perpetrators are those who continued on their Facebook site to invite people illegally to the Mall of America.”

“If we can identify those people who were inciting others to continue with this illegal activity,” said Johnson, “we can consider charges against them too.”

Johnson is building a criminal case against protest leaders, with police collecting evidence from mall security cameras and the group’s social media posts.

Meanwhile, “Black Lives Matter” says the police, not protestors, are to blame for the shutdown and have pointed to other groups as participating in the protest as well.

“We came to sing carols and raise awareness,” said group member Lena K. Gardner, “and the Bloomington police are the ones who shut down the mall, not us.”

Police: Officer fatally shoots armed man in town near Ferguson, Missouri

A police officer shot and killed an armed man late Tuesday in Berkeley, Missouri, said St. Louis County police spokesman Brian Schellman.

Police say the man had pointed a gun at the officer, who fired out of fear for his own life.

His mother, Toni Martin, identified the dead man as 18-year-old Antonio Martin.

Berkeley is a St. Louis suburb that borders on the city of Ferguson, where the controversial shooting of black teen Michael Brown by a white police officer triggered nationwide protests.

The officer with the City of Berkeley Police Department encountered two men during a routine check at a Mobil gas station, Schellman said. He got out of his squad car and approached them.

One of the men pointed a gun at the officer, who fired multiple shots at him, fatally wounding him. The second man fled.

Gun, body

A handgun lay in the parking lot with a bright yellow marker placed next to it, video from CNN affiliate KMOV showed. A body lay covered nearby. It was later placed on a stretcher and loaded into the back of a van.

Berkeley police asked St. Louis County police to handle the investigation of the shooting. The killed man's handgun was recovered at the scene, Schellman said.

The gas station appeared to be outfitted with surveillance cameras, which were pointed at the parking lot.

Mother speaks

Martin told CNN affiliate KMOV that her son had gone to see his girlfriend, who lived near the station and was with her at the time of the shooting. She said the girlfriend notified her of her son's shooting.

Martin said Antonio turned 18 in September. He had been expelled from school but was trying to get his life back together, she said, and she was encouraging him to join Job Corps.

Video posted to Vimeo showed Martin crying in the arms of other people.

Protest, scuffle

Protesters gathered around an ethnically diverse group of dozens of police officers, who stood between them and the scene. People in the crowd screamed at police. Others spoke more calmly.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer David Carson told CNN's Hala Gorani that some of the protesters damaged police cars. CNN showed images of one squad car with a large dent in its side.

A scuffle broke out, and officers grabbed some of the demonstrators and led them off in handcuffs.

"At one point, an explosive device, like a large firecracker or firework was thrown into the middle of the fight and exploded. That kind of scattered a lot of people," Carson said.

Video posted to YouTube showed two smoking objects flying toward the station, where police stood. One of them emitted white smoke, while the other exploded.

KMOV video showed a white plume rising at another location down the street.

Among the protesters were ministers and participants in Ferguson demonstrations after Brown's shooting death, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Before sunup, protesters thinned out, and those remaining grew calmer.

It’s WAR On The Streets Of America

CNN needs the ratings....

Make no mistake – there is now a state of open warfare on the streets of America.  Earlier this year it was being reported that the number of police officers killed on the job was up 40 percent in 2014, and that was before all of the civil unrest caused by the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.  At this point, attacks on police officers are becoming a frequent occurrence all over the country, but no incident has stunned the nation as much as the “execution-style” murder of two NYPD officers on Saturday by a radical Islamic gunman identified as Ismaaiyl Brinsley.  Just prior to the attack, Brinsley posted a message on Instagram in which he declared that he was “putting wings on pigs today”.  Many would like to dismiss this as an “isolated incident” and pretend that everything is just fine in America, but that is not the truth.  The reality of the matter is that anti-police sentiment in this country is at an all-time high, and the level of anger and frustration in our increasingly radicalized urban communities has reached a boiling point.  As economic conditions continue to deteriorate and police tactics become even more brutal in the years ahead, the kind of rioting, looting and senseless violence that we witnessed in Ferguson is going to become commonplace in major cities all over the United States.

The mainstream media and many national leaders on the left end of the spectrum have been stirring up strife and division for months on end.  So now a toxic environment has been created which is inevitably going to lead to even more violence.  At some recent “protest marches”, we have heard demonstrators enthusiastically chant extremely threatening slogans such as this: “What do we want? Dead cops!”  And when news broke that Ismaaiyl Brinsley had brutally murdered two NYPD police officers, lots of very twisted people on Twitter were actually celebrating.

We are moving into a period of time when it is going to be extraordinarily difficult to be a police officer in America.  I couldn’t even imagine going to work every day knowing that you could become the next target at any time.

Yes, there have been lots of abuses.  In fact, I have written dozens of articles about the emerging Big Brother police state in America.  In many areas of the country today, our police officers are actually being trained to be physically brutal, to bark orders at ordinary citizens and to treat everyone around them like dirt.  This culture of brutality and oppression filters down from the very top, and so ultimately the root of the problem is at the federal level.

But most police officers that are serving our local communities are just average people trying to do their jobs.  Without the police, crime would be wildly out of control.  So I am very thankful for the police in my local area.  I sleep better at night knowing that they are there.

And the reality of the matter is that we have made their jobs so much tougher.  Thanks to unchecked illegal immigration, there are now approximately 1.4 million members of criminal gangs living in our cities.  And the Obama administration is allowing the UN to import thousands of Muslim radicals to communities all over the nation.  The police have to deal with well-armed threats that they simply did not have to face 40 or 50 years ago.  Our society is becoming increasingly unstable, and the police have to contend with the bleeding edge of that instability day after day.

So Ismaaiyl Brinsley did not appear out of a vacuum.  Even though the mainstream media is playing this angle down, the truth is that Ismaaiyl Brinsley was probably a member of an extremely violent criminal gang, and he was most definitely a radical Muslim.

According to his Facebook page, Brinsley spoke Arabic, and he also posted extreme passages from the Koran.  The following is one example…

Ferguson, Mo., unrest 2014

Editor's note: To recap, during a press conference just now St. Louis County police confirmed that an 18-year-old, identified by family and community members as Antonio Martin, was shot and killed by a police officer in Berkeley, Mo., after Martin lifted a 9 mm handgun at the officer. The incident occurred while the officer was responding to a larceny call. Surveillance video from the scene has been used to corroborate this information, and police are expected to release more details later today. The officer was not using a body camera or dash camera at the time of the shooting, and has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. - Aaron

100% proof of the Media just stirring the pot.

HuffPo Duped by Twitter User, Prints False Racial Narrative
"Agenda and clicks still trump truth and decency."

When another shooting of an 18-year-old black man by a white police officer near Ferguson came to light Tuesday evening, The Huffington Post was there to fuel the racial narrative by publishing what turned out to be a false account that claimed the victim was shot because he refused to lie down.

Associate editor Sebastian Murdock was contacted through Twitter by user Jesus Christo (@DesJuanTheThug) who claimed he was with victim Antonio Martin and watched the policeman shoot his friend after Martin refused to lie down. Instead of vetting this source, Murdock believed the information and deemed it worthy of printing.

As police reports poured in with more details, such as the victim pulling a 9mm on the officer, @DesJuanTheThug's account came into question. Not helping was the fact that the "source" began taunting HuffPo through Twitter:

Realizing his horrible error, Murdock deleted the false report and issued a correction to his story:

A previous version of this story included an interview with a man claiming to have been at the scene of the shooting and friends with the deceased. As police have released statements saying the second person involved in the incident has fled the scene, the source is now suggesting he was never there.

Murdock added to Twitter:

It has since become clear exactly why Jesus Christo trolled the breaking news story -- he needs a rap career and craves attention:

Are uniforms a target now? Florida firefighter wounded in station house drive-by shooting

A firefighter in north Florida was struck in the arm Tuesday evening when his fire station came under fire in a drive-by shooting.

About a half-dozen firefighters were outside of Station 28 in the Jacksonville area gassing up vehicles when a car drove by and opened fire, said Lt. Jackson Short of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, according to WJAX-TV.

One of the firefighters was grazed in the arm by a ricocheting bullet, but the wound was considered minor and did not require stitches, according to Short.

Despite law enforcement across the country being on high alert because of the murder of two New York City police officers, and a Florida officer being killed a day later while responding to a call, Short said there was no reason to connect Tuesday’s incident specifically to the other shootings, WJAX-TV reported.

However, he said the firefighters were likely targeted because they were in uniform and in a well-lit area.

WJAX-TV reported that Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Chief Ivan Mote went further, saying the drive-by could be a copycat from the previous shootings.

“We’re concerned about the safety of our firefighters,” Mote said. “Of course our job is to protect people from incidents such as this, so first and foremost, we want to make sure our crews are safe.”

Jacksonville’s mayor released a statement calling the drive-by shooting a “cowardly attack.”

“I am outraged by cowardly attacks on our brave first responders,” Mayor Alvin Brown said in the statement. “These attacks will not be tolerated.”

The Obama Administration And Race-Baiting Pundits Are Paving The Way For National Policing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt2yGzHfy7s&feature=youtu.be

Well America, the “change” you voted for is here. Six years ago, you voted into office a community organizer who vowed to change America. That same community organizer, while campaigning, argued for a “civilian national security force.” But how can you create a national force when we already have local agencies?

Easy, you sow distrust in the local cops until the divide is so great, people start clamoring for the feds to come to the rescue. It sounds like the backstory to some cheesy movie of a dystopian future — only problem is, this is exactly what we are seeing happen right now, right here.

I’ve been a cop for 18 years. I grew up wanting to be a cop. When I was a kid in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, I did not know anyone who hated or feared the cops. In high school, I had friends in some of the most crime ridden neighborhoods of the city, and none of them feared the cops, none hated the cops. Sure, we all were nervous when we got pulled over, but that was the extent of our distrust. Today, going into some of those same neighborhoods, this time wearing a uniform, the feeling is distinctly different. The anti-cop sentiment has never been stronger in my lifetime than it is right now. But what got us here?

My first piece for the Daily Caller was in response to a question posed by Tucker Carlson: How has all the publicity surrounding the shooting in Ferguson, MO affected how you do your job? The resulting article, “Trust Me, Ferguson Changed Everything” was a quick look at the immediate backlash I was experiencing 1900 miles from Ferguson itself.

The problem with my perspective in that article is that the groundwork was being laid long before Mike Brown robbed that liquor store. The groundwork goes back to very early in Obama’s presidency (just 7 months to be precise) when his contempt for current American law enforcement first appeared in full force. Obama very publicly displayed his contempt on national television, when he announced to all the world, admittedly without knowing the full story, that “Cambridge Police acted stupidly” and out of racism.

Since then, Obama has repeatedly injected his opinion, very publicly, into a number of police issues, every time bringing race into the issue. His race baiting buddies Al Sharpton and Eric Holder are all too happy to play along. The Trayvon Martin incident is a perfect example. A Hispanic man shot and killed a black teenager who was attacking him. Obama went on national TV once again butting into the situation, insinuating the cops did not arrest Zimmerman due to racism, and then Obama turned Holder and the DOJ loose on the small Florida department.

The handling of the Martin case caused the first huge backlash against law enforcement. The useful idiots came out in droves and protested racist cops. Sharpton marched in the streets with the protesters calling for justice, and the dim witted masses played along and soaking it up.

Fast forward two years. Mike Brown, the “gentle giant” committed a strong arm robbery shortly before physically attacking a police officer. He tried to take the cop’s gun and was “murdered in cold blood while trying to surrender” — except that both the physical evidence and majority of the witness statements said that was BS. He was attacking the cop who shot in self-defense.

When word of the incident hit the media, including the televised lies of Brown’s crime partner, along came the usual race pimps. Al Sharpton was all over it. Obama spoke up many times, sending condolences to the parents of the poor, mistaken, murdered black youth. In fact, Obama personally called Brown’s grieving mother and spoke to her to express his sympathy. Obama immediately unleashed Eric Holder and the DOJ, sending them to investigate the racist white cops. Sharpton led “peaceful protests” during which no laws were broken, there was no looting, or violence, or arson, or assaults, or shootings, or vandalism, or attacks on the cops. And those horrible, racist cops did the unthinkable, like put on riot gear and attacked the “peaceful protesters” using their “tanks” and “militarized gear.”

The Governor of Missouri, Democrat Jay Nixon, 10 days after the shooting called for a thorough investigation into the incident to determine if criminal charges were merited —  or was it, “vigorous prosecution must now be pursued”?

Obama, in a very public middle finger raised directly to American law enforcement, sent representatives of the federal government to attend the funeral of a thug killed while violently attacking a cop. Throngs of celebrities and race baiters also attended the services.

Two short months later, out here in my neck of the woods, two cops were murdered and another wounded by a convicted felon, who was a Mexican citizen in this country illegally after having been deported numerous times. One of the cops, Deputy Danny Oliver, a white guy, was married to a very strong, successful businesswoman, who is black.  Did she receive a phone call from Obama expressing his sorrow at her loss, at the country’s loss of a hardworking man who gave his life protecting his community? Did Obama send representatives to attend Danny’s funeral? Not a peep.

A month after Danny’s funeral, when the grand jury decision to not file charges against Officer Wilson in Ferguson, MO was made public, the “peaceful protests” once again resumed. The “gentle giant”’s mother’s boyfriend (not his stepdad) climbed up onto a car and called for non-violent protests using calming words like “burn this **** down!” Of course, he said that after saying “Nah, if I get up there, I’m going to start a riot,” just before climbing onto that car.

The day after that, the Washington Post published an article written by a former police lieutenant who called for disbanding small, local agencies in favor of one large, state controlled law enforcement agency per state. I wrote a response to that article listing a great number of reasons why the idea won’t result in the changes the author cites as reasons to create those state agencies.

Ten days after the Ferguson grand jury declined to file charges against Officer Wilson, a Long Island grand jury in New York decided not to file charges against the officer in the “chokehold death” (that wasn’t) of Eric Garner. More “peaceful protests” ensued, and marches organized by none other than Al Sharpton himself took place in DC and NYC. Sharpton attended the march in DC where “marchers demanding that federal laws be enacted to curb local and state police agencies use of force rules.” Meanwhile, the related march in NYC happened, hundreds of the attendees chanted for a nonviolent approach saying, “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Now!”

The day after the Long Island grand jury declined to file charges, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio went on TV and decried all the centuries of racism on the part of law enforcement and says he will make sure that the entire NYPD receives proper training on how to be less racist (paraphrased).  In fact, his statements were so poorly received, his words met swift criticism by the working men and women of the NYPD, who called for a ban on the mayor attending any police funerals.

Well, after months of “peaceful protests,” with all of the regular race baiters spewing their “evil, oppressive, racist cop” rhetoric ad nauseam, the chickens are coming home to roost.

On December 20, 2014, Ismaaiyl Brinsley executed two NYPD cops while they sat in their patrol car. He came up from behind and shot them both in the head. He fled on foot and as the cops closed in, and his final act of cowardice was to put a bullet in his own head. Before this worthless excuse for a human went about committing his crimes, he posted a picture on Instagram and very clearly announced his intentions to exact revenge on the racist cops. He then went out and killed an Asian and a Hispanic officer in cold blood.

After the cowardly murder of the two, non-white NYPD officers, Mayor de Blasio again went on TV, this time to express his sorrow at the loss of two of the men whom he was speaking badly about only weeks before. I’m sure his condolences were well received…

On that same day, a California Highway Patrol officer on the opposite coast was attacked by a 17 year old wielding a machete. The officer was struck numerous times in the hand, forearm and face before finally shooting the suspect, who later died of his wounds. In keeping with the media war on law enforcement, the local TV news headline was “CHP officer shoots and kills teen.” All of the online articles I have found while writing this at least mention the officer was attacked, but even then some do not mention a weapon, and none that I have found expand on the amount of injuries the officer suffered, saying at best his injuries were “severe.”

Yes, even "conservative" FOX News is stirring the pot too - oh wait...they're runned by the RCC, so they're not so "conservative" after all!

Protester who advocates peace charged with setting fire at Berkeley QT

One of the most frequently quoted and photographed Ferguson protesters was charged Saturday with setting fire to a Berkeley convenience store last week.

St. Louis County police arrested Joshua Williams, 19, of St. Louis, on Friday after several local media outlets and store surveillance captured images of him trying to set a pile of wood on fire outside the QuikTrip on North Hanley Road early Wednesday.

Williams confessed to setting fires at the store in a videotaped interview, according to court documents.

Police say Williams entered the QuikTrip shortly after looters shattered its glass doors during protests of the death of Antonio Martin, 18, who a police officer had shot earlier at the Mobil station across the street. Surveillance footage from the Mobil store shows Martin point what police say is a gun at a Berkeley officer before the officer fatally shoots him.

Williams can be seen in videos both inside and outside the looted QuikTrip, authorities said.

On Friday night and Saturday morning, a small group gathered at the St. Louis County Justice Center in Clayton to protest Williams’ arrest. Some were in disbelief over his reported confession and said the video images are not clear enough.

“Josh is one of the young activists, and all of us have taken close to him. We got to know his heart, and he got to know ours,” said Bishop Derrick Robinson, of Kingdom Destiny Fellowship International. “He’s a great kid, an educated kid, a child who knows what he wants and is very active in the community.”

The Post-Dispatch, Bloomberg, USA Today and the Associated Press have quoted and photographed Williams. On Oct. 13, he was photographed walking arm-in-arm with author and activist Cornel West toward the St. Louis University campus where protesters staged a sit-in.

Williams’ most recent confrontation of St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson during a Ferguson Commission meeting landed him in the pages of this newspaper.

Williams came within feet of Dotson and shouted at him as he tried to answer questions from the panel. “Can someone please get this lying (expletive) ho off the mic!” Williams yelled.

Williams has been arrested at least twice during Ferguson-related protests for unlawful assembly as well as refusal to disperse.

Police say Williams used lighter fluid to set fires inside and outside the QuikTrip early Wednesday. He was charged with arson in the first degree, a felony. He is also charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor stealing for allegedly taking a lighter, gum and money from the store.

Williams has been quoted as an advocate for peaceful protests.

An MSNBC profile of Williams in September quoted him as saying, “We have to come together as one and show them we can be peaceful, that we can do this. If not, they’re going to just want us to act up so (police) can pull out their toys on us again.”

Later, he continued: “I learned that we have to stand up and that you can’t get nowhere with violence but you can always move people without it.”

Radical black activist issues cop-kill prediction

Shabazz (tallest in front) with New Black Panther Party

Malik Zulu Shabazz, the former national leader of the New Black Panther Party, said the radical group will “build up an army” in 2015 to combat police, and he predicted coming events “that are gonna seem tragic to white America and may even shock our own consciences,” including the killing of police officers.

On a recent episode of the New Black Panthers Party’s “Black Power Radio” posted at Breitbart.com, Shabazz, current national president of Black Lawyers for Justice, said:

“Mister Malcolm X, he consistently teaches us self-defense. The most honorable Elijah Muhammad continuously teaches us self-defense. The honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey teaches us self-defense, and we know, our leader and our teacher, the honorable Khalid Abdul Muhammad, teaches us self-defense.

“What am I saying? Right now it’s time to build up that army. Right now it’s time for us to build up those corps, those troops. It’s time to get strong. It’s time for lifting weights and working out and going to the gun range and all of that.”

Shabazz (tallest in front) with New Black Panther Party in South Africa

Shabazz counseled his followers that some will do things that “shock” their consciences, including killing police officers.

“Sadly because America won’t do justice to black people, more and more people are going to lose balance and go off, and so we’re going to have funerals. Mike Brown gonna have funerals, Eric Garner in New York,” Shabazz said. “All over the country, we’re having our funerals, but now they must put on their dress blues and have their funerals, too. It’s a helluva day in this hour.”

Listen to the episode below:
http://www.wnd.com/2015/01/radical-black-activist-issues-cop-kill-prediction/

He added that “some people are tired of seeing our people killed and murdered” and that “they are going to be killing some people in 2015. And unfortunately, police officers are going to be killed. As a result of killing us, they have inspired people in the population to go off and retaliate against them.”

After rallying his followers to “build up an army” and “go to gun range,” Shabazz claimed the coming violent actions will have “nothing to do with us.”

As WND reported in September, Shabazz claimed credit for shutting down traffic, chasing people away and preventing rioting for a single night in Ferguson, Missouri.

It was also the New Black Panthers, during the fight in Florida for justice when armed neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin after being confronted by the teen, who offered $1 million in reward for the “capture” of Zimmerman.

Shabazz’s Black Lawyers website promotes the Black Action Network as well as the Nation of Islam, which was founded in Detroit in the 1930s with the stated goal of improving the spiritual, mental, social and economic conditions of blacks. Its critics say it is a black supremacist organization.

WND also reported that photographs show President Obama appearing and marching with members of the New Black Panther Party as he campaigned for president in Selma, Alabama, in March 2007. Among the people visible in the pictures with Obama is Shabazz.

Barack Obama speaks from same podium as New Black Panther leader Malik Shabazz during campaign event in Selma, Ala., in 2007 (BigGovernment.com)

Speaking to WND, Shabazz boasted he met Obama when the future president attended the 42nd anniversary of the voting rights marches in Selma in 2007.

“I have nothing but respect for Obama and for his pastor,” said Shabazz, referring to Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s former pastor of nearly 20 years.

The NBPP is a controversial black extremist party whose leaders are notorious for their racist statements and for leading anti-white activism.

Shabazz himself has given scores of speeches condemning “white men” and Jews.

The NBPP’s official platform states “white man has kept us deaf, dumb and blind,” refers to the “white racist government of America,” demands black people be exempt from military service and uses the word Jew repeatedly in quotation marks.

Shabazz has led racially divisive protests and conferences, such as the 1998 Million Youth March in which a few thousand Harlem youths reportedly were called upon to scuffle with police officers and speakers demanded the extermination of whites in South Africa.

The former NBPP chairman was quoted at a May 2007 protest against the 400-year celebration of the settlement of Jamestown, Va., stating, “When the white man came here, you should have left him to die.”

He claimed Jews engaged in an “African holocaust,” and he has promoted the anti-Semitic urban legend that 4,000 Israelis fled the World Trade Center just prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

I'm not the world biggest fan of our current government, but nonetheless the police departments across America is doing a good job in terms of staying scriptural with Romans 13:1-7(as they almost consistently, for the most part, are revengers to execute wrath upon them that doeth evil).

Pt being that these people really, really must want their Police State/Martial Law now.

Middle School Kids Taken To Hear Louis Farrakhan Call For Violence Against The 'Crackers'
"We want some of this earth or we’ll tear this goddamn country up!”

An administrator at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Baltimore, MD, took forty young teenage students as young as eleven-years-old to the 2nd Annual Black United Summit International (BUSI) conference where they heard bigoted purveyor of hatred Louis Farrakhan reference "white people as “crackers” and a call for “retaliation” for the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson."

According to Danette Clark, who wrote about the conference for the Education Action Group's website, EAG News, the theme of the conference "was 'Re-Claim, Re-Pair, Re-Form, Re-Produce, – REPARATIONS NOW!', [it'] took place at Morgan State University and was reportedly attended by more than 2,000 “students, community leaders, and distinguished guests.”

Specifically, Farrakhan held up what appeared to be the Quran and said that both it and the Bible have a “law of retaliation” in them. “A life for a life,” he said.

    Farrakhan continued:

As long as they kill us and go to Wendy’s and have a burger and go to sleep, they’ll keep killing us. But when we die and they die, then soon we’re going to sit at a table and talk about it! We’re tired! We want some of this earth or we’ll tear this goddamn country up!”

Farrakhan also condemned President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, and others for telling protesters to “cool it,” stating:

They know an explosion is going to come. You leaders are the worst. Tonight in Ferguson everyone is on edge. White folks ain’t never been on edge after they’ve killed a Black man. Tonight they’re on edge. So on edge that our president has come out from behind the curtain to ask Black young people, ‘cool it.’

You leaders are the worst. When you talk to young people, you can’t feel that you’re missing them? Parents, you can’t feel when you’re talking to your children that this is a new generation and they don’t want to hear your compromising? But time has moved on. Your day of leading our people is over.

You preachers—your day of being the pacifier for the White man’s tyranny on Black people is over. You’ve got to know they’re not going to hear you anymore.

When asked by Clark why the children were taken to this conference, Anthony Pena, the Middle School administrator who took the forty students between the ages of 11 and 15 to the conference, said, "At the end of the day… it’s about how we connect to our youth and help develop them to become our future.”

Hewitt Confronts Buzzfeed Ben Over Misleading Sensationalized Headlines
Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith might have selected a more pleasant way to spend New Year's Eve.

woops, got caught  Cheesy

Looking back on it, Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith might have selected a more pleasant way to spend New Year's Eve. Smith was a guest on the Dec. 31 edition of the Hugh Hewitt Show, and found himself defending Buzzfeed's practice of "click bait" journalism, posting a misleading sensationalized headline to draw readers. Making matters worse, Hewitt used a Buzzfeed story as an example that Editor-in-Chief Smith hadn't read.

The Buzzfeed article in question was originally called "Dead Cops Chant’ a Myth." After the Hewitt interview, it was changed to "The Origins Of The Alleged 'Dead Cops' Chant." and a correction was added to the bottom of the article:

A headline on the front page of BuzzFeed described the chant of “dead cops” as a “myth.” In fact, marchers appearing to chant those words appear on a YouTube video embedded in this post.

Hewitt who is a law professor, took a "prosecutorial" approach to the questioning. He argued the headline was "misleading, because your reporter says it’s not a myth, it’s just overstated.”

Smith scrambled to read the story and answer the questions at the same time:

Hewitt: All right, let’s go from the general to the specific. The lead story at BuzzFeed on the last day of the year – Dead Cops Chant A Myth. That’s the headline. When you click on that, in fact, the headline is misleading, because your reporter says it’s not a myth, it’s just overstated. What they’ve latched onto in Tasneem Nasrullah’s piece is, “What they’ve latched onto is one viral video and a few small online anarchist groups.” And then as you read later, that’s the sub-head--I don’t know if she wrote that, either--when you read later, she actually comes up with a half-dozen instances of occasions where people have called for violence against police. So what do you call that, that escalator of attention-grabbers?

    Smith: Well, wait a second. The…the…the specific…(pause)

Hewitt: The headline is Dead Cops Chant A Myth.

Smith: (pause) Actually, I haven’t read the story. So I don’t feel I want to debate it with you.

    Hewitt: (laughing)

Smith: …as I read it on the screen…

Hewitt: I’m ahead of the editor?

    Smith: (laughing)

    Hewitt: That’s okay.

    Smith: …enough these days.

Hewitt: Now look, here’s the deal. The story’s a good story. It’s very, it makes a key point, which is the amplification of trolls is a problem in the news business, right? ... What happens is the lowest common denominator of any story gets the most attention. It happens on the immigration story, happens on the cop killer chant story. Nevertheless, the headline…

Smith: Wait, but you said this story, this story is protestors advocating for dead cops seems like a pretty straightforward…

Hewitt: Look at Dead Cops Chant A Myth, Ben. It’s not a myth. She confirms it in the first graph. It happened.

Smith: (pause) Oh, I see. You’re talking about the splash headline here.

Hewitt: Yeah, I’m talking about what people click on. So ... is that tabloid? Are you guys borrowing…

Smith: I think "myth" is a little strong. But (pause while typing), but I guess, but what are you, I’m not, but I’m also not sure what you’re asking.

Hewitt: What I’m saying is do you feel regret that they used that? Or is that just fair game, tabloid journalism comes to the internet? You’re just trying to get people to click on that to read it…

Smith: Well you know, I’m going to have, I’m happy to take a look at the story that you just, that you’re reading aloud to me at the moment. I mean, I think that obviously, reporting should be accurate. Headlines should be accurate. I mean, so yeah, but I think that’s a fairly obvious point that we both agree on.

Elected Official’s Ominous Tweet: ‘When You Exercise Your #WhitePrivilege, Don’t Think I’m Not Going to Remember.’

In a profile by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal is called “fiery” and is said to be known for her “sometimes profane outbursts” as well as being unpredictable.

More from the Post-Dispatch:

In the last eight months alone, she’s lambasted the governor on education and African-American issues, called for the removal of the education commissioner and run a smear campaign against a fellow Democrat in a race that didn’t otherwise involve her.

On Saturday the state senator posted a series of tweets that began with “LET ME BE CLEAR”…but she appeared to up the ante with this one: “LET ME BE CLEAR: When you exercise your #WhitePrivilege, don’t think I’m not going to remember. I will use it for the future. Uncomfortable?”

NY Post: Companies Pay Off Al Sharpton to Avoid 'Racist' Label

Shakedown Sharpton learned all this from Jessie Jackson...

Sony Pictures Entertainment isn't the first corporation to reach out to the Rev. Al Sharpton for help with its image in the black community, and the New York Post reported Sunday that Sharpton allegedly gets paid to keep from calling the companies racist.

Sharpton's National Action Network has received hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past decade from companies eager to gain his support or simply to keep him quiet, the Post said.

"Al Sharpton has enriched himself and NAN for years by threatening companies with bad publicity if they didn’t come to terms with him," National Legal & Policy Center Ken Boehm told the Post. "Put simply, Sharpton specializes in shakedowns."

A typical scenario involves Sharpton confronting a company over accusations of racism. He then meets with company executives, who end up contributing to NAN.

"Once Sharpton’s on board, he plays the race card all the way through," the Post quoted a person it said has worked with Sharpton as saying. "He just keeps asking for more and more money."

The Post cites a New York state inspector general's report on Plainfield Asset Management, which in 2008 gave $500,000 to Education Reform Now, which in turn gave the money to NAN.

The money was intended to promote "educational equality," but it was given at the same time Plainfield was part of a group, Capital Play, trying to build a racetrack and casino in Queens.

Plainfield denied the money was intended to curry favor from Sharpton, but a year later NAN was given another $100,000 from AEG, which had taken over for Capital Play, as a battle over the company's licensing was brewing.

The inspector general's report cited an email between two AEG employees in 2009 claiming that Sharpton had lobbied hard on the company's behalf with then-Gov. David Patterson.

Though Sharpton denied taking any action on the casino's behalf, AEG saw its payments as a way of keeping Sharpton from criticizing them and hurting their efforts, the Post quoted a person it said was familiar with the situation as saying.

Many companies have paid NAN, including American Honda, which was targeted by Sharpton in 2003 for not hiring enough minorities in management. Two months later, the company met with Sharpton and began sponsoring events put on by NAN. Sharpton's protests stopped.

Sharpton also got a $25,000-a-year consulting job with Pepsi after threatening a boycott in 2008 because he said their ads did not include black people.

General Motors for six years resisted Sharpton's requests for money, but relented after Sharpton threatened a boycott over the closing of a black-owned dealership in The Bronx.

Sony Pictures has not announced any donations to NAN after meeting with the movie studio's co-chair Amy Pascal, but Sharpton also has not given his support.

The recent hack of Sony Picture's computer system revealed racially-tinged emails Pascal wrote wondering whether President Barack Obama liked some of the company's movies – all of which were about African-Americans.

"I have had no discussion with her about money," Sharpton told The Post. "There was never even a remote discussion about money."

But he did say soon after the meeting, "The jury is still out on where we go with Amy."

New York mayor's secret past comes to light
De Blasio's unreported history stirring racial protests

Largely unreported in the news coverage of the recent race-related demonstrations is that New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has a history of working with extremist activist groups to stir protests.

Further, de Blasio has a largely unreported history with the controversial Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN.

ACORN’s renamed group, the New York Communities for Change, is one of the organizations helping to lead the protests over the death of Eric Garner, who was killed by police in July.

De Blasio has been accused by critics, including New York police officers, of helping to fuel racial tension between police and protesters.

One of the major anti-police protests in New York that received media attention was an attempt to shut down Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue shopping district before Christmas.

The protest was led by the group Act Now To End War & Stop Racism Coalition, or ANSWER, together with Occupy Wall Street and at least 10 other so-called economic justice and pro-Palestinian groups.

ANSWER has worked with ACORN and has led protests in the past with MoveOn.org, a group with which de Blasio previously worked.

De Blasio, Soros, MoveOn.org and protests

During the mayoral race last year, New York City media reported billionaire George Soros had endorsed de Blasio. But the reports failed to disclose the billionaire’s major financial donation to de Blasio’s nonprofit as well as the candidate’s cozy working relationship with Soros-funded activist groups. De Blasio worked with some of those groups to stir protests.

In 2011, using his position of public advocate, de Blasio launched a nonprofit called the Coalition for Accountability in Political Spending, or CAPS. The group received its primary launch donation of $400,000 from Soros’ Open Society Institute.

De Blasio used his group and his public office to organize with other Soros-funded groups.

In 2011, Chris Bragg at CityAndStateNY.com reported de Blasio pursued a case against the Minnesota-based Target Corporation after it contributed $150,000 to an organization that promoted a local politician, Tom Emmer, for governor. Emmer had drawn controversy for reportedly opposing a law that sought to combat the bullying of homosexual youth.

De Blasio’s office responded by organizing a protest with MoveOn.org, which is funded directly by Soros as well as by the Soros-funded Tides Foundation.

De Blasio also worked with other Soros-funded groups, noted Bragg, including Common Cause, the advocacy group Public Citizen and the D.C.-based Center for Political Accountability.

According to Braggs, de Blasio first became more familiar with Soros after the politician was invited to speak in 2011 at an intimate panel discussion at the billionaire’s Fifth Avenue apartment.

“I really didn’t know Soros before this,” de Blasio later stated. “At the end of it, I talked to him a bit, and he expressed some appreciation for the notion of finding a constructive way to address this. He said, ‘Stay in touch,’ and we did.”

He added, “Then we went to his staff and said, ‘Look, we’re trying to build this out nationally, and here’s an idea how to do it.’”

De Blasio the ACORN mayor?

In September 2013, WND was first to report de Blasio has a long history with the controversial ACORN, once even steering public funds to an ACORN front group.

De Blasio previously served several terms on the city council and as New York City public advocate from 2010 to the present.

He was endorsed by ACORN for his 2010 public advocate race.

De Blasio spent $43,000 to hire N.Y. Citizens Services Inc., an affiliate of ACORN, to run canvassing, consulting and field work for his public advocate campaign.

As a councilman, de Blasio steered $115,000 in taxpayer dollars directly to ACORN as well as to the organization’s affiliate, the New York Agency for Community Affairs.

De Blasio’s 2010 public advocate campaign was also endorsed by the ACORN-founded Working Families Party, with which the politician demonstrates a larger working relationship.

As a councilman, de Blasio was hired as a consulate by a group called the Progressive America Foundation, which reportedly paid him $33,000 to lobby for election regulations that would ease restrictions on third parties such as the Working Families Party, or WFP. The foundation is closely tied to WFP.

De Blasio turned around and spent $67,740 to hire WFP’s for-profit branch, Data and Field Services, for canvassing and election consulting. The organization was run from the same office as New York ACORN.

WFP was founded by progressive activist Dan Cantor, who also was a founder of the socialist-oriented New Party.

De Blasio reportedly served as executive director of the New York branch of the New Party.

WND previously exposed that President Obama himself was listed in New Party literature as a member.

De Blasio is clearly still supported by the ACORN nexus.

Bertha Lewis, the former executive director of ACORN, spoke for de Blasio at numerous events during the mayoral election.

“I’ve known Bill for decades, and we’ve fought on the front lines together. We’ve organized together,” Lewis said, according to EAG News.

“[He's] proud to say he’s liberal. [He's] proud to say he is severely progressive and was proud to stand with me, to back me, to back ACORN, and said, ‘We will march down the street together and I dare you, I dare you, to say something against my friend!’” Lewis continued.

EXPOSED: FERGUSON RIOTS AND NYC ANTI-POLICE PROTESTS FUELED BY REVOLUTIONARY COMMUNIST PARTY MOVEMENT

OBAMA PRESIDENCY EMBOLDENS COMMUNIST PARTY IN AMERICA TO MAKE AGGRESSIVE MOVES

If you had been paying close attention to the signs carried by the endless waves of street protesters during the Ferguson riots and then those in New York City against the police, you would have seen at the bottom “revcom.us”. Most of us ignored that, but a quick visit to the website that created those signs revealed something very interesting…communists.

RevCom is the website for Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. Their goal is to inflame and incite till the streets run with blood and anarchy prevails. In his bio, it reads “Bob Avakian came alive as a revolutionary in the 1960s—taking part in the great movements of those days, and especially working and struggling closely with the most advanced revolutionary force in the U.S. at that time, the Black Panther Party.” source

After 6 years of the Marxist community organizer from Chicago, Barack Obama, America has been sufficiently softened up socially and morally to receive the pernicious propaganda from not only the Revolutionary Communist Party, but from all avenues of degenrate Socialism, Marxism, and any other type of bottom-feeding “ism” that lurks out there.

RevCom feels that the mood in America is ripe for violence and rebellion, and judging by the thousands of “useful idiots” on the streets protesting over the past few months, it looks like they are correct. But do not believe for one, single second that these protests reflect the “will of the people”, they do not. This is nothing more than egregious community organizing ala the Chicago Way.

This is not the exercising of our right to freedom of speech, this is anarchy and mass mind control. Like Obama, they are looking to steal your America, and replace it with the Communist vision.

Next time you see protests in the street, take a good look at the signs they are holding. You are being played for a chump, and they count on your indifference and apathy to succeed.

http://news.yahoo.com/southern-baptist-leaders-call-integrated-churches-153945214.html
Southern Baptist leaders call for integrated churches
1/24/15

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Leaders in nation's largest Protestant denomination are preaching that integrated churches can be a key driver of racial justice in society. But that could be a hard sell to those sitting in Southern Baptist Convention congregations.

The Rev. Russell Moore, who leads the Southern Baptist's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, is one of several white leaders calling for multiethnic congregations in the wake of the unrest spurred by the killings of black men by white police officers in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City.

"In the church, a black Christian and a white Christian are brothers and sisters," Moore wrote recently. "We care what happens to the other, because when one part of the Body hurts, the whole Body hurts. ... When we know one another as brothers and sisters, we will start to stand up and speak up for one another."

The effort has taken on particular urgency for Moore and other Southern Baptist leaders who have been working to overcome the denomination's history. The convention was formed in 1845 in a split with other Baptists when Southern Baptists resolved to continue allowing slave owners to become missionaries.

During the civil rights movement, Southern Baptists were largely silent or actively opposed ending segregation. The denomination eventually declared racism a sin, and in 2011 renewed efforts to reach out to Latinos, African-Americans and others. The next year, the denomination elected its first African-American president, the Rev. Fred Luter, Jr.

Moore's commission has also organized a leadership summit called "The Gospel and Racial Reconciliation" to be held this spring.

Moore said he has two goals for the summit. He wants to spur churches to work for racial reconciliation by articulating it as a Gospel demand. And he wants to facilitate personal relationships between Southern Baptists of different races.

But some would also like to see concrete efforts to integrate the Southern Baptist Convention, especially at the level of leadership.

"The church lacks the moral authority to address the world about race before we set our own house in order," said the Rev. Dwight McKissic, a black Southern Baptist pastor in Arlington, Texas.

While he praised recent statements by SBC leaders, he also noted that the denomination continues to employ all whites as top executives and seminary presidents.

"It's obvious the rhetoric and reality is not matching," he said.

Nonwhite congregations made up 20 percent of the Southern Baptist Convention's nearly 51,000 congregations in 2012, the most recent year statistics are available from the denomination. But less than 1 percent of those congregations are multiethnic. The vast majority of Southern Baptists attend a church predominantly filled by people of their own race, be it black, white or Hispanic. The situation is nearly identical in most Christian denominations in the United States.

Despite that lack of integration, a phone survey of about 1,000 churchgoers by Lifeway Research recently found that only 37 percent of evangelicals thought their churches needed to become more ethnically diverse. The survey was not broken down by denomination.

David W. Key Sr., director of Baptist Studies at Emory University's Candler School of Theology, said the convention adopted a resolution in 1995 recognizing and apologizing for its historic role in supporting slavery and Jim Crow policies. If the denomination had also set out to address the inequalities those policies had wrought, it could have done a lot over the past two decades, he said.

Moore said he agrees that things are changing too slowly within the SBC, but he sees signs of hope. He points to the work of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary President Danny Akin, who has made recruiting and educating a racially diverse group of future pastors a key goal.

Akin said he doesn't think the patterns and structures built up at the SBC over more than a century can be changed without an active and intentional effort.

"My grief is we're late to this party," he said. "We should have been leading the way. The Christian church should be the first to speak to issues of discrimination and injustice ... not sitting back."

http://news.yahoo.com/civil-rights-landmark-bridge-named-reputed-kkk-leader-194223754.html
Civil rights landmark bridge is named for reputed KKK leader
3/4/15

SELMA, Ala. (AP) — When the nation's first black president steps onto the Edmund Pettus Bridge to honor the marchers beaten there 50 years ago, he'll be standing on a structure that's at once synonymous with the civil rights struggle and a tribute to a reputed Ku Klux Klan leader.

The latter fact had all but faded from local memory until recently, when a Selma student group launched an online petition to rename the landmark bridge.

During his 50th anniversary address Saturday, President Barack Obama will be flanked on one side by a new historic marker commemorating "Bloody Sunday," when white police beat demonstrators marching for black voting rights on March 7, 1965. The sign, erected earlier this year by the state tourism department, notes Obama's 2007 appearance there just before his election and the accolades for "Selma," the recent film about the march.

It offers no details about Edmund Winston Pettus, a Confederate general and U.S. senator who lived in Selma after the Civil War. The Encyclopedia of Alabama, an online database sponsored by the University of Alabama, Auburn University and the Alabama Department of Education, says Pettus held the title of grand dragon of the Alabama Klan in 1877 — an assertion that's questioned by some historians.

Just beyond the other end of the bridge, a billboard erected recently bears a heroic image of another Confederate general, Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest. The ad, sponsored by a group dedicated to honoring Forrest, invites visitors to see Selma's "War Between the States" historic sites; next month is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Selma, in which Forrest fought.

As the "Bloody Sunday" anniversary approaches, a student group in Selma is petitioning to rename the bridge, whose twin metal arches soar above the murky Alabama River. The online petition, addressed to Selma Mayor George Patrick Evans and to the National Parks Service, has been up for about two weeks. It does not propose a new name for the bridge.

John Gainey, executive director of Students UNITE, a racially integrated youth group that began the petition, said having a white supremacist's name attached to the city's most visible landmark illustrates the city's deep racial divisions a half-century after the marchers were beaten at the bridge.

Just as in the 1960s, Gainey said, Selma is split by race. Blacks attend public schools, most whites go to private academies and many blacks still live in run-down shanties while whites occupy nice homes with manicured lawns, he said. Yet the town of nearly 20,000 people is about 80 percent black.

"We think it really does represent something larger," said Gainey.

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, a veteran civil rights leader, agrees the bridge's name should be changed to quit honoring someone with alleged Klan ties.

"They're responsible for too much death and misery. We don't need to honor them," said Lowery, a lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr. who participated in the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery march. "I'm with the kids. Let's change it."

However, Selma historian Alston Fitts doubts Pettus had anything to do with the KKK. Although the city was a hub of racial animus in the 1960s, Selma was known as a "safe place" for blacks aligned with liberal Republicans after the Civil War during Reconstruction partly because of a lack of Klan activity, he said.

"He was a pretty lousy Klan leader if that's what he was," said Fitts.

Pettus' views on race were widely known during Reconstruction. In July 1871, when Pettus testified before a congressional committee investigating the Klan, he made it clear he believed whites, not blacks, were the victims in the post-Civil War South.

Pettus asserted that any campaign of intimidation was being waged by Republicans and "carpet-baggers" seeking to incite blacks to commit "acts of aggression on their part against the white people," according to congressional archives.

Michael Fitzgerald, a professor of history at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, is researching a book on Reconstruction-era Alabama. He said he hasn't found "persuasive evidence" that Pettus was a Klan officer or even member, but he said Pettus was "almost certainly" involved with the White League, a later terrorist organization.

"He is a Confederate general, he is a Democratic leader when white supremacy is their slogan — is what they exist to do," he said. "What I would say is Edmund Pettus is definitely a strong white supremacist."

An attorney who entered the Confederate army as a major in 1861 and rose to the rank of brigadier general by 1863, Pettus was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1897 after Reconstruction and served until his death in 1907 at age 86.

Pettus' legacy was still well known in Selma when the bridge was constructed just east of downtown in 1940, so the span was named for a man revered locally as a tenacious Southern leader. With Jim Crow laws still in effect, blacks had virtually no say in the decision.

And until now, there has never been a serious effort to rename it.

Officer Darren Wilson exonerated in DOJ report

Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson is in the clear after a report by the Department of Justice was released yesterday that found no evidence of wrongdoing on his part.

Looks like they'll have to recall all those "Hands Up! Don't Shoot" T-shirts.

ABC News:

The department of Justice announced today that police officer Darren Wilson will not be charged in the death of Michael Brown.

"There is no evidence upon which prosecutors can rely to disprove Wilson's stated subjective belief that he feared for his safety," the DOJ criminal report said.

According to the report, Wilson "saw Brown reach his right hand under his t-shirt into what appeared to be his waistband."

Accounts that Brown put his hands up are "inaccurate because they are inconsistent with the physical and forensic evidence," the report says.

Witness accounts were "inconsistent" and "changed over time," it also said.

We knew that already from the St. Louis County autopsy report - that was immediately dismissed by protestors. But "Hands Up! Don't Shoot" will enjoy a long life in the racialists protests. The legend is secure, the narrative, set. No matter how many reports come down debunking the notion that black kid was gunned down in cold blood, since it doesn't fit into the myth, they will be ignored.

AG Holder apologized to the people of Ferguson that DOJ would be unable to persecute Wilson:

"The promise I made when I went to Ferguson and at the time that we launched our investigation was not that we would arrive at a particular outcome, but rather that we would pursue the facts, wherever they led," said US Attorney General Eric Holder. "Our investigation has been both fair and rigorous from the start. It has proceeded independently of the local investigation that concluded in November. And it has been thorough: as part of a wide-ranging examination of the evidence, federal investigators interviewed and re-interviewed eyewitnesses and other individuals claiming to have relevant information and independently canvassed more than 300 residences to locate and interview additional witnesses."

Holder added, "This conclusion represents the sound, considered, and independent judgment of the expert career prosecutors within the Department of Justice. I have been personally briefed on multiple occasions about these findings. I concur with the investigative team’s judgment and the determination about our inability to meet the required federal standard."

The report on the Ferguson police department is another story. The DOJ all but put white hoods on the police:

As detailed in our searing report ... this investigation found a community that was deeply polarized; a community where deep distrust and hostility often characterized interactions between police and area residents," said US Attorney General Eric Holder. "A community where local authorities consistently approached law enforcement not as a means for protecting public safety, but as a way to generate revenue. A community where both policing and municipal court practices were found to disproportionately harm African American residents. A community where this harm frequently appears to stem, at least in part, from racial bias – both implicit and explicit. And a community where all of these conditions, unlawful practices, and constitutional violations have not only severely undermined the public trust, eroded police legitimacy, and made local residents less safe –- but created an intensely charged atmosphere where people feel under assault and under siege by those charged to serve and protect them."

Should a report by the most important law enforcement department in the United States government be "searing"? Shouldn't it be cold, dispassionate, and factual? Holder destroyed the credibility of his own report with that characterization, revealing his personal and professional bias.

Three officers have been identified as sending clearly racist emails. One has been fired and the other two placed on administrative leave. There were 161 accusations of excessive force between 2010 and 2014. Only one case was founded and no officer was disciplined. Does that establish a pattern and practice of discriminatory policing.

Like most police forces the size of Ferguson, questions can be raised about their lack of training and general professionalism. But in this case, it appears that there is tremendous dysfunction between police and the citizen largely as a result of erroneous perceptions of police on the part  blacks, and a lack of understanding of the community they serve on the part of police. Simply hiring more black police officers and holding "diversity training" sessions is not going to solve the problem. Only consistent dialogue involving all parties will begin to remove the distrust in the community and help the police protect law abiding citizens.

Here we go again...

Police: 19-year-old dies after shot by Wisconsin officer

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Protesters carrying signs reading "Black Lives Matter" gathered Saturday, hours after an officer fatally shot a 19-year-old black man who authorities said assaulted the officer in the man's apartment.

Police Chief Mike Koval said the man was shot Friday night after an altercation in which the officer was knocked down by a blow to the head. Koval did not know whether the man was armed, but said "initial findings at the scene did not reflect a gun or anything of that nature that would have been used by the subject." The officer's name, race and years of service has not been released.

Authorities also did not release the name of the victim, who died at a hospital. But Sun Prairie High School Superintendent Tim Culver said in a statement that it was Tony Robinson, who graduated in 2014.

Several dozen gathered outside the Dane County Public Safety Building on Saturday before starting to walk toward the scene of the shooting, holding signs that read, "Black Lives Matter" — a slogan adopted by activists and protesters around the nation after recent officer-involved deaths of unarmed black men. Protesters also shouted the slogan Friday night after the shooting.

"My son has never been a violent person. And to die in such a violent, violent way, it baffles me," said Andrea Irwin, who told WKOW-TV on Friday night she is Robinson's mother.

The state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting under a 2014 Wisconsin law that requires police departments to have outside agencies probe officer-involved deaths. State Attorney General Brad Schimel said the department will not share details of the investigation until it is finished.

"We are resolved that the result of that investigation will be one in which the public can have confidence," he added.

Madison, about 80 miles west of Milwaukee, is the state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin's flagship campus. About 7 percent of the city's 243,000 residents are black.

Koval said police were called about 6:30 p.m. Friday because the man was jumping into traffic. A second call to police said the man was "responsible for a battery," Koval said.

The officer went to an apartment, which neighbors said was Robinson's, and forced his way inside after hearing a disturbance. Koval said the officer was assaulted by the 19-year-old and then fired at him. Koval said he believes more than one shot was fired.

Neighbors said Robinson's apartment is in a two-story gray house on the block of Williamson Street, known to many as Willy Street. Many walked to nearby restaurants and cafés on Saturday.

Grant Zimmerman said Robinson would run between his apartment and his roommate's mother's house across the street: "He runs back and forth across the street all the time, even in the middle of traffic."

Olga Ennis, a neighbor and family friend, said Robinson was well-liked. "He was a beautiful kid," Ennis said. "He wouldn't hurt a fly."

She said many in the community don't trust police officers. "We're afraid of the cops," she said. "Who do you call for help now?"

The shooting came days after the U.S. Justice Department cleared Darren Wilson, the white former Ferguson, Missouri, officer who shot Michael Brown, of federal civil rights charges in the death of the 18-year-old, who was black and unarmed. A second report found patterns of racial profiling, bigotry and profit-driven law enforcement and court practices in the St. Louis suburb.

Koval referenced recent officer-involved deaths across the nation, saying "it's understandable that the reaction at the scene and of some of our citizens is extremely volatile, emotional and upsetting."

Mayor Paul Soglin called it "a tragedy beyond description," according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

"I expect there will be a lot of anger and frustrations, particularly from friends," Soglin said. "I hope as the pain eases that something constructive will come of this."

Sharon Irwin, who told the newspaper Friday night she was Robinson's grandmother, urged protesters to be peaceful.

"I think you need to rise up but I don't want violence," she said.

Messages were left with Robinson's mother and the Madison police department.

Colin Powell Still Sees 'Dark Vein' of Intolerance in GOP
3/8/15

Speaking on the day following the 50-year anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Alabama, the first African-American Secretary of State Colin Powell said he still sees a "dark vein" of intolerance in the Republican Party, echoing comments that he made in 2013.

"I still see it. I still see it in the Republican Party and I still see it in other parts of our country. You don't have to be a Republican to be touched by this dark vein," Powell told ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday on "This Week."

"We've come a long way, but there's a long way to go. And we have to change the hearts and minds of Americans. And I see progress, especially in the younger generation," Powell added.

President Obama, along with former President George W. Bush, was in Selma Saturday to mark the anniversary of the seminal moment in the civil rights movement. They were joined by Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, who was brutally beaten during the march out of Selma that day in 1965.

"What that bloody Sunday event did for the nation was to hold up a mirror in front of all Americans and said, 'Look, this is what's going on in this country. This cannot continue,'" Powell said.

Powell also echoed one of the theme's of Obama's speech in Selma, noting that while progress has been made on race relations, the "march is not yet over."

"We've made enormous progress. If we hadn't made progress, [President Obama] wouldn't have been standing there, Eric Holder wouldn't have been with him and I wouldn't be here right now," Powell said.

"But we still now have hurdles that we have to get over," Powell added, noting the battle in some states over voter identification laws.

The former secretary of state also weighed in on the Justice Department report released this week that found systemic discrimination against African-Americans by the police department in Ferguson, Missouri.

Powell said he was "shocked" by the report, but was not taken completely off guard.

"I was shocked but not that surprised, frankly, George. I know these things have existed in other parts of our country. This shouldn't have been that great a surprise to any of us. But it's not throughout the country," Powell said.

During the interview on "This Week," Powell declined to comment directly on the controversy that has engulfed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton following revelations she used a private email account while she headed the State Department.

"I can't speak to Mrs. Clinton and what she should do now. That would be inappropriate," said Powell, who helped modernize the State Department through new computers and early use of e-mail during his time as secretary of state.

"In order to change the culture, to change the brainware, as I call it, I started using it in order to get everybody to use it, so we could be a 21st century institution and not a 19th century,"
Powell said of his own e-mail practices. "But I retained none of those e-mails and we are working with the State Department to see if there's anything else they want to discuss with me about those e-mails."

Wisconsin capital marked by third day of protests after police shooting
3/8/15

MADISON, Wi. (Reuters) - Activists protested for a third day in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white policeman, the latest in a string of killings that have intensified concerns of racial bias in U.S. law enforcement.

More than 100 people angry over the death of Tony Robinson Jr. marched through the streets of Madison toward the capital building on Sunday evening, carrying signs, beating drums and chanting "The people united will never be defeated."

Earlier scores of people who took part in a sign-making event designed to involve children in the civil action rallied outside the apartment home where Robinson died.

Robinson, 19, was shot in Madison, Wisconsin's capital, on Friday evening after Officer Matt Kenny responded to calls about a man dodging cars in traffic who had allegedly battered another person, Police Chief Mike Koval said.

Kenny, 45, followed the suspect into an apartment, where the officer was struck in the head, according to Koval. Kenny then shot the unarmed teen, who died later in a local hospital.

Last year, the deaths of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City triggered a wave of demonstrations against the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers.

Kenny is on paid administrative leave while the Wisconsin Department of Justice conducts an investigation.

In a statement on the city's website, Madison Mayor Paul Soglin called the shooting "a tragedy beyond description" and said the city would be transparent in communicating results of an investigation into the shooting.

He noted that the incident occurred on the same weekend as the 50th anniversary of the "Bloody Sunday" march in Selma, Alabama, a turning-point in the U.S. civil rights movement. Kenny, a 12-year veteran of the Madison Police Department, was exonerated in a police shooting in 2007 and even earned a commendation in the incident, Koval said.

According to media reports, a 48-year-old man in that instance was shot to death after he pointed a gun at officers and refused to drop his weapon. The weapon was later determined to be a replica of a .38-caliber handgun.

Wisconsin court records show that Robinson pleaded guilty to armed robbery last year and received a probated six-month sentence. Koval declined to comment on Robinson's record.

Wisconsin family, protesters seek justice for teen shot by police
3/9/15

MADISON, Wis. (Reuters) - Close to 2,000 students marched in Wisconsin's capital on Monday to protest the fatal police shooting of an unarmed biracial teenager, while his family demanded justice and the police chief apologized.

Students crowded into the rotunda of the state Capitol in the morning, chanting and waving signs to protest the death of Tony Robinson, 19, shot on Friday by a white police officer.

Later, Turin Carter, Robinson's uncle, said his family was calling for a thorough investigation and was concerned about the "systematic targeting of young black males," but did not endorse blanket anti-police sentiments.

"We are not proponents of anti-police (attitudes)... We understand that law enforcement is necessary and mandatory and we need to change our mindset about the police," Carter said at a news conference outside the house where Robinson was shot.

Standing near a memorial of candles and balloons, Carter said it was simplistic to call Robinson African American, saying he had a mixed heritage and his racial ambiguity was a central issue in his life.

Police shootings across the country have intensified concerns of racial bias in law enforcement.

Many teenagers at the morning protests were from Robinson's alma mater, Sun Prairie High School.

"There is an indifference between people and police. We all need to come together," said Ali Asafford, 15, after leaving class at Madison's East High School. The march was orderly and police presence was minimal.

Officer Matt Kenny, the 12-year police veteran who shot Robinson, is on paid administrative leave while the Wisconsin Department of Justice investigates the shooting. In 2007, Kenny was involved in a fatal shooting that was found to be justified.

Police Chief Michael Koval apologized on Monday after praying with Robinson's grandmother over the weekend and pledging transparency in the investigation.

"Reconciliation cannot begin without my stating 'I am sorry,' and I don't think I can say this enough. I am sorry. I hope that, with time, Tony's family and friends can search their hearts to render some measure of forgiveness," Koval wrote in his blog.

Attorney General Brad Schimel asked the public to be patient with the investigation, saying his office would not be able to disclose details since it could taint testimony from witnesses.

Official efforts to be transparent, apologetic and light-handed with protesters followed months of heightened attention to police use of deadly force across the United States.

Last year, the police shooting death of black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, set off weeks of protests that sometimes turned violent. Police reaction was criticized as heavy-handed, and critics were outraged at the long delay in releasing the name of the officer who shot Brown.

Madison, a city of 240,000 people about 80 miles (130 km) west of Milwaukee, has a mostly white population. The city is 7 percent African-American, U.S. Census figures show.

On Friday night, Kenny, 45, responded to reports of an assault and a man dodging cars in traffic. Kenny followed the suspect into a dwelling. Koval said the officer was struck in the head and then shot the unarmed teen.

Last year, Robinson pleaded guilty to armed robbery, and was placed on probation. Sentencing documents show it was his first brush with the law, and he was not the armed person in the group that committed the robbery.

Concern about Wisconsin's own history of police use of deadly force prompted passage of a law last year requiring independent investigators to probe such incidents. The bill had support from police associations.

The head of the local NAACP chapter said the Madison police department did not engage in the sort of racial targeting that the U.S. Justice Department found prevalent in Ferguson.

"I have observed what I think is a very effective community policing structure, and I think it makes a difference," said Greg Jones, president of the Dane County chapter of the advocacy group.
