Galatians 2:1-5

Gal 2:1 Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.
Gal 2:2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
Gal 2:3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:
Gal 2:4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:
Gal 2:5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

The words "spy out" in the 4th verse - something been thinking about for awhile...what kind of tactics do these false brethren use when they "spy out" our liberty which we have in Jesus Christ?

To me they simply acted or appeared to act like a Christian but really didn't believe. And in time, when pressed for sound doctrine, these false brethren are found out, "To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour..."

I believe this means that it is important to "try the spirits...". And to do that one must know sound doctrine, starting with having the Spirit to know what sound doctrine is, to be able to compare "spiritual with spiritual".

I don't take the phrase "spy out" as the same as we know a "spy". I take it to mean simply to appear as one thing when your something else, to be deceptive. They were not of us, so they are the enemy less they repent. And clearly we don't want the enemy inside the camp, thus the Word is what draws them out of the darkness and exposes their fraud. It is our spiritual sword to battle the enemy with, the "...sword of the spirit...".

Probably, figuring what liberties they had, then bring into question or cause them to doubt their liberties, in order to bring them back under the law.
