      I think you are right on with the two swords being the Old and the New Testaments. It does not make sense to me any other way.
 I do  not think that protecting yourself with a gun from a wild animal is the same as killing a human being in self defense. I do not think of a bear as being evil. If I kill a bear he will not go to hell. We have dominion over the beasts. Not over men.
It is simply being responsible to carry a gun or pepper spay or a BIG knife into the woods for protection.
Especially if you have children with you.
It is no different to me than making sure that you are prepared with a first aid kit or warm enough gear or food to eat.
It is not doubting the Lord or not putting enough faith in Him to be prepared with the provisions or skills that He has blessed you with.
Couldn't having faith in the Lord to deliver me from a wild animal be praying to  have the strength and composure and foresight and precision to counter an attack by a hungry animal?
If all that I had was a rock, a stick, a knife, a slingshot, or even only my bare hands I would have faith in the Lord to deliver me from the attack using what was available.
It is not easy to fight a grizzly bear. You could have a gun, get attacked by a bear, and never have the time to fire off a single shot.
But nine times out of ten you can scare a bear off by just shooting a round into the air.
In the woods, a gun is a valuable tool with many uses. You are only being responsible to have one.
