Study: China Harvesting Organs from Tens of Thousands of Political Prisoners Annually

Human rights researchers have published an updated study accusing China of conducting tens of thousands of organ transplants using the bodies of political prisoners without their consent. While the practice has been known to occur in the communist nation for decades, Beijing alleges that it long stopped harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience.

Former Canadian lawmaker David Kilgour, human rights lawyer David Matas, and journalist Ethan Gutmann have released an update to their respective projects documenting the use of political prisoner bodies in hospitals to conduct organ transplants. The update to their respective works “Bloody Harvest” and “The Slaughter,” suggests that the Chinese government regularly imprisons “primarily practitioners of the spiritually-based set of exercises, Falun Gong, but also Uyghurs, Tibetans, and select House Christians,” and transfers their bodies to hospitals after executing them “in order to obtain organs for transplants.”

The study does two things: compare the number of organ transplants on the Chinese government’s national record to the sum of the records of local hospitals, and cite numerous anecdotes from those who have seen the practice first-hand or fear their relatives have been a victim of the practice. The government does not publish information on organ donor registries – which would confirm that either all transplants are done using voluntary donors or that prisoners are used in the practice – so researchers are forced to figure out the math using the numbers available of transplants already conducted:

Chinese government statistics for transplant volumes are not necessarily reliable. One effort which needed to be made and which we finally have made is to determine on our own what Chinese transplant volumes are… We did that by looking at and accumulating the data from the individual hospitals where transplants occur. Some hospitals state their transplant volumes. For those who do not, we can, from their bed counts, personnel strength, potential patient groups, rate of growth, technological development, academic publications, and media reports, come to a conclusion on their transplant volume.

CNN breaks down the suspect numbers: 5,019 organs on record as being transplanted in 2015 remain unaccounted for, and the number of transplants not documented federally is somewhere between 50,000 and 90,000. Six hundred and twelve hospitals the researchers found conducting transplants are not on the government’s record as having approval to do so.

Adherents to Falun Gong, a spiritual movement based on meditation and holistic medicine, have been decrying illegal organ harvesting for years. The Chinese government sees Falun Gong as a threat because it promotes individual meditation and its leader has developed a formidable following compared to that of the communist system.

“I remembered they performed blood tests on us Falun Gong practitioners, not just once, but regularly, and it was to prepare for a possible match,” Crystal Chen, a Falun Gong practitioner who has been arrested in China, told Voice of America.

“They performed three blood tests but gave me no results. After I was released from the camp, one of practitioners, who happened to be a doctor, told me they were doing a bone marrow test to see if my kidney was a match,” another former prisoner, Ma Chunmei, said.

Some doctors have also decried the practice. Uighur doctor Enver Tohti testified in 2014 to being forced to extract organs from recently executed prisoners with haste, before their bodies cooled. “‘Why are we operating?’ Tohti remembers asking his superior. ‘Come on. This man is dead.’” He was forced to remove the man’s liver and kidneys.

The Chinese government has adamantly denied the claims. “Such stories about forced organ harvesting in China are imaginary and baseless — they don’t have any factual foundation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said of the new report, CNN notes.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution this month calling for the State Department to implement visa restrictions on Chinese nationals suspected of participating in the practice, a move China sternly condemned.

Euthanasia and Organ Harvesting: A Ghoulish-But Not Surprising-Proposal

Last November, Colorado became the sixth state to legalize physician-assisted suicide. It was and is a terrible idea.

Among the arguments my colleague John Stonestreet and others made was the fact that the so-called “safeguards” in these kinds of laws are illusions. Experience in Europe shows that once you concede the principle that some lives are not worth living, the definition of what kinds of lives are not worth living expands.

As one Belgian law professor put it, “What is presented at first as a right [to die] is going to become a kind of obligation.”

Proponents of physician-assisted suicide dismiss these arguments as “alarmist” and deny that any such thing could happen.

 And then, it happens.

Case in point: Last month, Julie Allard and Marie Chantal-Fortin, ethicists at the University of Montreal, argued that the organs of those who submit to physician-assisted suicide shouldn’t go to waste.

Writing in the Quebec Journal of Medical Ethics, Allard and Chantal-Fortin said that “MAID (medical aid in dying) has the potential to provide additional organs available for transplantation. Accepting to procure organ donation after MAID is a way to respect the autonomy of patients, for whom organ donation is an important value.”

The words “autonomy” and “important value” are window dressing for this ghoulish proposal. And I mean “ghoulish” in the original sense of monsters who live in graveyards and consume human flesh.

While in this case the consumption takes the form of organ transplantation, in both instances the most vulnerable members of our society are viewed as potential forms of sustenance for the rest of us.

Think of the Planned Parenthood videos: Human beings, made in the image of God, treated as the flesh-and-blood equivalent of a coal mine.

And in case you think that Allard and Chantal-Fortin are wacky outliers, think again. In May of last year, both Transplant Quebec, which coordinates the organ donor process in the province, and an ethics committee of the Quebec government took similar positions.

Allard and Fortin do acknowledge that “patients might feel that they are a burden and could only be useful if they were to give their organs,” and that “this would constitute a subtle form of coercion.” They also concede that “It will be difficult to disentangle patients’ motivations for requesting MAID.”

Still, they’re confident that what they call the “complete separation” of the decision to end one’s life and the decision to donate one’s organs should be a sufficient safeguard.

This, folks, is a delusion. As John mentioned on BreakPoint last November, the first thing that elderly Canadian patients were asked after receiving a cancer diagnosis was, “Do you wish to be euthanized?”

No pressure there!

Canadian ethicists may not see the potential for abuse, but the Australian journal Mercator.net did. For instance, “What if organ donation organizations promoted a standard advance directive which instructs your next-of-kin to arrange for organ donation euthanasia if you become seriously demented? There is no reason why this could not happen. In Belgium, demented people can be euthanized and organs are being accepted, even from elderly people. That would clean out the nursing homes and shorten the kidney waiting list.”

Put simply, “the potential for exploiting vulnerable people is immense.”

And the only way to safeguard against this is to not concede the principle that some lives are not worth living in the first place. Anything short of that turns people into strip mines.

Canada Reportedly Harvesting Organs of Euthanasia Patients

A recent push in Canada to encourage euthanasia patients to donate their organs appears to be working.

In Ontario, the first province to report data, 26 people who died by lethal injection decided to donate tissue or organs since the Medical Aid in Dying Act (MAID) came into effect last June, according to the National Post. A total of 388 people have chosen to die by lethal injection in Ontario, over half of the 744 total Canadians who have been euthanized.

Proponents of linking organ harvesting to euthanasia point to the shortage of organ transplants readily available and the lower cost associated with euthanasia than with end-of-life care.

UK Govt to Make All Britons Organ Donors Unless They Opt Out

The UK government has taken one step further towards bringing into effect an ‘opt-in’ organ donation system which will presume a person is an organ donor in moves that one medical ethicist warns could mean increasing donations by “slight of hand”.

Conservative Government ministers are to go ahead with reformations to organ ‘donation’ laws which they said could increase the availability of organs for transplant by 700 per year, reports the BBC.

The legislation is expected to be brought before the House of Commons when MPs return from recess in Autumn, and if Parliament approves the organ donation law, it will come into effect in England by Spring 2020.

Currently, Wales already operates such a system, Scotland is looking to introduce a similar scheme, and Northern Ireland is also considering it.

The law will mean that unless a person has expressed a wish to not donate their organs, doctors will presume the dead person is a donor.

There will be exceptions — children under 18, those with diminished mental capabilities, and foreigners who have been in the country less than 12 months — and relatives can still override the ‘presumed consent’, if the ‘donor’ has relatives in the first place to object.

Those who do want to opt out will be able to do so by using a National Health Service (NHS) app to be launched at the end of the year.

    — Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) June 11, 2018

However, medical ethicist Dr Piers Benn raised several issues arising from the Government legally changing all Britons to presumed organ ‘donors’, saying that it may leave some people feeling “cheated” and “uncomfortable” with what has hitherto been treated as a “gift”.

Dr Benn said the current system respected that “you know what you’re doing and you’re doing it because you want to save someone’s life”, he told Sky News on Sunday.

“The problem with opt-outs is that — while it does save lives — people may not be aware that that is the default assumption. so people will be ‘donating’ their organs without knowing they are doing that.”

Asked by the news anchor whether it would give doctors licence to take your organs, the medical ethicist said: “Sometimes if there is no known wish a doctor can approach relatives and some relatives decide not to donate.

“But the issue really is how do we weigh up the number of lives saved with the need to respect fully the consent of the person who has just died to what happens to their organs.”

    — Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) June 22, 2018

Recognising that the 700 additional organs would be available every year under the new system by virtue of being taken by the deceased who may not have expressed a wish to donate when alive, Dr Benn observed that “There is something lost [in this system].

“I don’t say this solves the issue completely as it removes that you know what you’re doing and you’re giving.

“After all, no one has an obligation to save strangers’ lives.”

Asked whether it would make people feel that the government is presuming ownership over there body, the medical ethicist reiterated that you can opt out — but that it was down to a person reading the “small print”.

“You can opt out but you have to be pretty savvy to do so. Of course, the reason why the government have shifted from the opt-in to the opt-out position is to increase donations — which is a good thing, but done in a way which is at risk of being done by slight of hand.”
