Bill calls for Jewish prayer times on Temple Mount

Separate prayer times would be held for Jews and Muslims, with overlap for Christians at Jerusalem holy site.

On the heels of a US State Department report delineating Israeli policy barring non-Muslims from praying on the Temple Mount, MK Arieh Eldad (National Union) has drafted a bill mandating separate hours for Jews and Muslims to pray at the holy site.

“The Temple Mount is the holiest place for the Jewish People, where the First and Second Temple stood,” Eldad explained. “It is also a holy place for Muslims, and is the site of the Aksa Mosque. It also has a special status in Christianity.” As such, the National Union MK seeks to anchor in legislation for freedom of worship at the Temple Mount for all three religions.

Bill calls for Jewish prayer times on Temple MountThe bill, which has yet to be officially submitted because the Knesset is on an extended summer recess, states that the site must be open to Jews every day, except for Friday, the Muslim holy day, and on other Muslim holidays. It would be open to Muslims every day except for Saturdays and Jewish holidays.

Jews would be allowed to worship on the Temple Mount from 8-11 a.m., 2-6 p.m. and 9-11 p.m. Muslims could pray at the site from 4-7 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.

Christian and other tourists’ visiting hours would overlap with some of the Jewish and Muslim hours.

If Muslim and Jewish holidays fall on the same day, the bill calls for the Religious Services Ministry to establish a special schedule.

The US State Department’s International Religious Freedom Report was released to Congress and the public two weeks ago.

The report points out that all non-Muslims are denied opportunities to worship at the Temple Mount, for security concerns.

Jerusalem Mayor: Let Jews Pray on Temple Mount

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat last week said it was time for Israel to finally implement true religious freedom and allow Jews to pray atop the Temple Mount.

"The government is ultimately responsible for whether or not Jews can pray on the Temple Mount, not the Jerusalem municipality," Barkat told students at a religious high school. "My opinion is that everyone should be able to pray there."

Despite being the holiest site in the world to Jews and many Christians, none but Muslims are permitted to pray atop Jerusalem's Temple Mount.

Technically, anyone can pray there, but threats of Muslim violence have resulted in a police policy forbidding Jews and Christians from even mouthing prayers while visiting the Temple Mount.

Despite the ban, a growing numbers of Jews have been saying quiet prayers while visiting the Temple Mount, and many have been arrested for doing so as a result of Muslim authorities complaining to police.

The Muslims claim Jerusalem's Temple Mount as an "Islamic Trust," and therefore view "infidel" prayers as desecrating a site holy to them. Local Muslims have in the past responded with deadly violence to visits to the Temple Mount by prominent Jewish leaders.

Palestinians rail against Temple Mount ‘Judaization’

Fatah and Hamas blast Israel for mulling Jewish prayer on the holy site in the name of freedom of worship

Palestinians from across the political spectrum attacked reported Israeli government plans to allow Jewish prayer on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.

On May 8, the Knesset’s Interior Committee, headed by Likud MK Miri Regev, debated the long-standing unofficial ban on Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, revered as the site of both Jewish temples and currently administered by the Islamic Wakf. At the meeting, Elhanan Glatt, the director general of the Religious Affairs Ministry, said that his ministry was examining the possibility of revising the informal ban on Jewish prayer at the site.

Hamas deputy politburo chief Moussa Abu Marzouq on Sunday incorrectly described the Knesset session as an Israeli decision to encroach upon Islamic worship at the site, known in Arabic as Al-Haram Ash-Sharif.

“What the Zionist Knesset authorized is very dangerous,” wrote Abu Marzouq on his Facebook page late Sunday night. “They talk about dividing the al-Aqsa Mosque as an expression of freedom of worship!”

The icon of Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque, erected by Muslim Caliph Omar at the end of the seventh century on the southern perimeter of the Temple Mount, has often served as a call to arms against Israel. A visit by opposition leader Ariel Sharon to the Temple Mount in September 2000 was used as a casus belli to spark the Second Intifada, known in Arabic as the al-Aqsa Intifada.

Abu Marzouq asserted that, if Israel has its way, the al-Aqsa Mosque will be partitioned into Jewish and Muslim areas of worship, as is the case in the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

“For them, freedom of worship is dividing what you have and maintaining what they have. For them, freedom of worship is 10 percent for the Muslims and 90% for the Jews in the Cave of the Patriarchs,” continued Abu Marzouq.

“This ominous Knesset decision will not stand, irrespective of the sacrifices.”

Palestinian sensitivity surrounding the al-Aqsa Mosque was already at a peak this week, following the detention for questioning of Jerusalem Mufti Mohammed Ahmed Hussein on May 8 and police restrictions placed on Muslim worshipers entering the Temple Mount ahead of Jerusalem Day.

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Ensour expressed his government’s “deep concern” over the “Israeli violations against al-Aqsa Mosque,” as the Jordanian parliament voted in favor of expelling the Israeli ambassador to Jordan.

On Sunday, following a meeting of the PLO’s Executive Committee, PA President Mahmoud Abbas lambasted Israel for ostensibly creating facts on the ground in Jerusalem’s holiest site.

“An action like this cannot be ignored, and we shall not allow it to continue,” Abbas told WAFA news agency on Sunday. “If Israel dreams that through these daily attacks against the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque it will create facts on the ground, it is delusional.”

The statement issued by the PLO was even more harshly worded, asserting “the right of Muslim and Christian [Palestinians] … to protect the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque from the aggression of settlers and the dangers of Judaization, which the extremist Zionist organizations continue to impose under the auspices of the occupation authorities and with their blessing.”

At the Knesset meeting, Foreign Ministry official Freda Yuval warned that any change in the status of the Temple Mount will “arouse the entire world” against Israel.

Earlier this month, Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein approved a decision to prevent MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud) from visiting the Temple Mount for fear that it could spark violence and endanger Israel’s security.

Did the EU just back Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount?

Israel might have just scored European Union support for finally allowing Jews the right to pray atop Jerusalem's Temple Mount, the holiest site in the world for Jews and many Christians.

Whether or not it was her intent, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on Friday issued a call for religious freedom in Jerusalem that by definition must also include Jewish access to the Temple Mount.

"The High Representative is disturbed by recent events in East Jerusalem such as those that took place at Orthodox Easter, the unrest in the area of the Haram al Sharif/Temple Mount and the temporary detention of the Mufti of Jerusalem. ...It is essential that access to the holy sites in Jerusalem for peaceful worship for all denominations is fully respected," said Ashton's spokesperson.

For years Israeli police have denied Jews and Christians the right to pray, even silently, atop the Temple Mount for fear of sparking a Muslim riot. Islamic officials follow every Jewish and Christian group visiting the holy site to ensure this restriction is obeyed.

The European Union has never before supported Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, and Ashton herself views the presence of Jews on the eastern side of the holy city as an obstacle to peace. As such, it is highly unlikely that she intended to throw her weight behind true freedom of religious expression for Israeli Jews in Jerusalem.

I agree, she must have something up her sleeve.

Well, scripture says worship will return in some kind of deal with the Antichrist, then later be rescinded. So it stands to reason certain things must take place for that to happen.

Daniel 9:25-27 KJV

Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Regev: Sovereignty on Temple Mount Trampled-On Recently

Chairwoman Miri Regev of the Knesset Interior and Environmental Protection Committee said, Monday, that Jews must go up to pray on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City according to the custom of the place and "certainly according to the law of the state of Israel, which allows freedom of religion."

Jews and Muslims to share al-Aqsa Mosque?
Israel braces for reaction to proposed law that would allow Jews to pray in the grounds of Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque.

Occupied East Jerusalem - Until a few weeks ago, most Israeli and Palestinian pundits dismissed the possibility of a Palestinian uprising in the near future.

However, a draft Israeli law granting Jews the right to pray at the al-Aqsa Mosque esplanade - one of the three most holy sites in Islam - is forcing some observers to reconsider their previous assessments.

The draft law, which is being discussed in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, would designate "time and space" for Jews wishing to pray there.

The haram al-sharif, or "noble sanctuary", has been an exclusively Islamic shrine since the Arab conquest of Palestine in the 7th century AD. But the mosque was built upon the Temple Mount, itself one of Judaism's most sacred sites.

Since the Israeli army occupied Jerusalem in 1967, the site has borne witness to several provocative events. In 1969, an Australian Christian-Zionist named Denis Michael Rohan torched the mosque's exquisite pulpit, which was put in place by Saladin upon retaking Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187. In 1982, Alan Goodman - a Jewish American Israeli soldier - fired an automatic rifle at Muslim worshippers in the Dome of the Rock, killing two and wounding 11.

And in 2000, then-Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount, accompanied by 1,000 policemen, asserting that the site would remain perpetually "in our hands" - an act that helped to spark the Second Intifada.

Muslims view any Jewish encroachment on the site as being at their expense and constituting an assault on their faith. Sheikh Muhammed Hussein is the head of the Supreme Muslim Council, which manages the site. "[The mosque] is part of our creed: It is expressly mentioned by name in the Holy Quran," he said. "Thus, an Israeli aggression against the mosque and the haram al-sharif is tantamount to attacking the Kaaba in Mecca, the most sacred spot in Islam."

He added: "I cannot imagine that Muslims around the world will remain idle as they see Jews desecrating their holy site. This issue transcends politics. It is greater than politics."

Heart of Judaism

Israelis, too, claim the place as holy. Until a few years ago, the Chief Rabbinate in Israel strictly prohibited Jews from praying or even walking in the area known to Jews as the Temple Mount. Observant Jews would instead only pray at the outside wall. But in recent years, the Rabbinate seems to have somewhat relaxed its prohibitions in this regard, perhaps to appease Zionists who adopt a messianic ideology combining Judaism and political Zionism.

However, spokespersons of the Chief Rabbinate vehemently deny any policy change regarding the prohibition on praying at the spot. Yefrach Toker, a spokesperson for Israel's Chief Rabbi, David Lau, said the ruling forbidding Jews to pray at the Temple Mount "is still in effect":

"The edict remains unchanged. I am giving you the official Jewish religious judgement." Toker did not answer when asked why some Jews ignore the Rabbinate's instructions forbidding them to pray and walk in the area. However, it is widely believed that most of the non-abiders are affiliated with politically inspired right wing factions, which do not always heed the Rabbinate's rulings.

Zeev Maor, also a Rabbinate spokesperson, said that "according to halacha or Jewish religious law, no Jew may walk in the designated area", due to ritual impurity and the need to avoid stepping on the holiest spot on the site, where the Ark of the Covenant was said to have been kept. "For thousands of years, the Temple Mount was the centre of Jewish religion," he explained. "Hence, it is inconceivable that Jews would cede the place to non-Jews."

Some Muslim religious leaders, however, dispute the site's importance to Judaism. "Judaism survived thousands of years without the Temple and without Jerusalem," argued Ikrema Sabri, an imam at the al-Aqsa Mosque. "This place has been an exclusive Muslim house of worship almost uninterruptedly for 14 centuries. We as Muslims cannot succumb to Jewish myths and whims."

Tinder box

Both Palestinian and Israeli officials agree that the controversy over the site has the potential to spark an uncontrollable conflagration. "There is no doubt that this issue has the potential of provoking ordinary people like no other issue does," said Ihab Bsiso, head of the Palestinian government press office in Ramallah.

"This is why I can say that the Israeli government is really, really playing with fire. Israel must rein in its pyromaniacs."

An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, who didn't want her name published because she was voicing her personal opinion, concurred: "I agree that this issue is very sensitive and could spark off a huge explosion. I believe that the draft law allowing Jews to pray at the holy site won't pass. The government and the prime minister are aware of the potential disastrous ramifications of such a decision."

But Hani al-Masri, a prominent Palestinian political analyst, is not sure that this is the case. "We are accustomed to seeing Israel embark on foolish acts that provoke our people," he said. "I am sorry; I can not give the Netanyahu government the benefit of the doubt."

It is expressly mentioned by name in the Holy Quran," he said.

Now THAT is a lie! He's twisting what it says.

Quote
Masjid al-Aqsa translates from Arabic into English as "the farthest mosque." The name refers to a chapter of the Qur'an called "The Night Journey" in which it is said that Muhammad traveled from Mecca to "the farthest mosque," and then up to Heaven on a heavenly creature called al-Buraq al-Sharif.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Aqsa_Mosque

If there were no mosques west of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, then MAYBE he'd have a case. But it clearly is NOT mentioned by name or even specific location.

Clashes break out between Jewish, Muslim worshipers on Temple Mount

Police closed the Temple Mount on Sunday, after two Muslims attacked two Jewish visitors who had been praying at the holy site.

A video uploaded on the internet purports to capture the fight, which began after the Jewish men, accompanied by a police escort, sang the Hallel prayer and a number of Arabs promptly confronted them. Two men from the group then assaulted the Jewish visitors, resulting in the arrest of all four, police said.

The issue of limited Jewish prayer rights at the Temple Mount, under the control of the Wakf Muslim religious trust, continues to fuel debate between Arabs and Jews politically and socially.

Last month, a Knesset Interior Committee meeting to discuss the continued restrictions Jewish visitors face on the Temple Mount degenerated into a shouting match, with Arab politicians threatening a third intifada.

“You’re playing with fire and you’re starting an inferno!” MK Jamal Zahalka (Balad) shouted during the discussion.

“I’m not threatening anything – I’m just saying what will happen,” he added before storming off.

After the Knesset debate, Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Pepe Alalu (Meretz) – who briefly ran for mayor last month before withdrawing his name – said the problem resides with Jewish provocateurs, who go to the site solely to incite conflict.

“I think we need to accept the division,” he said. “All the Jews go to the Temple Mount only to create provocations.”

Alalu hinted that the problem would not be resolved unless Israel recognizes a Palestinian state.

“If you recognize a Palestinian state, we can change some things,” he said, without directly referencing the Temple Mount impasse. “But we must do this together.” Further complicating an already inflamed situation are pronounced divisions among rabbinical leaders regarding the right to Jewish prayer there.

While some rabbis outlaw ascent to the Temple Mount in absolute terms on pain of spiritual excommunication, others insist that Jewish prayer at the site is an acceptable deviation from Torah law.

It is a widely held that Jews are forbidden from going to the site of the Temple because of ritual impurity caused by contact with the dead. The religious establishment, principally the Chief Rabbinate, actively reinforces this notion.

On two occasions within an eight-week period last year, the powerful Jewish religious governing body issued a notice reiterating the stance of chief rabbis Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzger – as well as the revered late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef – that according to Jewish law it is unequivocally forbidden to visit the Temple Mount.

However, at last month’s Knesset meeting, Deputy Religious Services Minister Eli Ben-Dahan (Bayit Yehudi) announced he was seeking to reach an agreement with the Chief Rabbinate to allow Jews to pray there.

In the meantime, it appears little common ground has been gained concerning the issue.

“This [problem] is not going to be fixed until Jews are allowed to pray there as freely as Muslims,” said a woman who identified herself only as Rachel. “There is no room for further debate.”

Jewish activists want to pray on Jerusalem's Temple Mount, raising alarm in Muslim world

A small but growing movement by Jewish activists demanding the right to pray at the site of their destroyed temple, in the heart of this disputed capital’s Old City, is creating a potentially explosive clash with the Muslim world, which considers the spot holy and bans Jews from public worship there.

Each week, hundreds of Jews ascend the creaky wooden ramp built above the Western Wall and enter what is often called the most contested real estate on Earth. Many then embark upon a game of hide-and-seek with their police escorts — whispering forbidden prayers while pretending to talk into cellphones, and getting in quick but banned bows by dropping coins and then bending to pick them up.

Their proposals, long dismissed as extremist, are now being debated in the Israeli parliament and embraced by an expansionist wing in the ruling coalition government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

These political leaders, many in Netanyahu’s party, want Israel to assert more, not less, control over the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Old City, including the place known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary.

“We’re looking for it to be divided between Jews and Muslims,” said Aviad Visoli, chairman of the Temple Mount Organizations, which claims 27 groups under its umbrella. “Today, Jews realize the Western Wall is not enough. They want to go to the real thing.”

Two millenniums ago, this place was the site of the Jews’ Second Temple, destroyed in A.D. 70 by Roman legions under Titus, who cast the Jews into exile. The Western Wall, visited by 10 million people a year, is part of the remaining rampart built around the raised temple complex. Together, the wall and the site of the destroyed temple are the holiest landmarks in Judaism.

The same courtyard is home to al-Aqsa mosque, one of the oldest in Islam, and the Dome of the Rock, the golden landmark where tradition says the prophet Mohammad made his night journey to heaven.

For Palestinians and much of the Muslim world, any mention of changing the status quo at the site, the third-holiest in Islam, is incendiary. Protecting al-Aqsa has been a rallying cry for generations.

“This place belongs to the Muslim people, and no others have the right to pray here,” said Sheik Azzam al-Khatib, director of the Waqf, the Islamic trust that administers the site. Khatib said the mosque is a unifying symbol for the world’s 1.2 billion Muslims.

“If they try to take over the mosque, this will be the end of time,” Khatib warned. “This will create rage and anger not only in the West Bank but all over the Islamic world — and only God knows what will happen.”

The site, like all of Jerusalem’s Old City, was under Jordanian control until 1967, when it was captured by Israel during the Six-Day War. The Waqf administers and protects the site. Israeli police also patrol the area and accompany Jewish visitors while they visit.

Non-Muslim tourists are welcome to wander freely around the grounds. But non-Muslim prayer is forbidden. Jews in religious garb are taken aside at the entrance by Israeli security officers, screened more closely and sternly warned not to pray, bow, sing, tear their clothes in mourning or display any religious items.

Israeli Lawmakers: Allow Jews to Pray on Temple Mt.

Israeli lawmakers are making a push to allow Jews to pray at a key holy site in Jerusalem's Old City.

The site is known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

There's currently a ban on Jewish prayer there, but this month Israeli Knesset members asked Jordan to allow limited Jewish worship there.

Jordan oversees Muslim affairs at that site.

Muslim authorities say Israel is trying to encroach upon the site where they believe the prophet Mohammed ascended to Heaven.

Jews believe the rock may be where the holiest part of the two ancient Jewish Temples stood about 2,000 years ago and where a third will one day be built.

Police Close Temple Mount to Jews, Shorten Minister's Visit

Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) ascended to the Temple Mount on Sunday, in a visit previously coordinated with security forces, despite numerous attempts by Israel Police forces to stop him. Police prevented visitors from ascending to Judaism's holiest site on Sunday after local Muslims rioted at the site earlier Sunday. While Ariel eventually was allowed to complete the visit, his stay was still cut short at the request of local authorities.

Arab rioters hurl stones at MK Feiglin on Temple Mount

Hundreds of Muslim worshipers protest visit by Likud lawmaker to holy site; police arrest two youths, order MK to leave the compound.

Hundreds of Arab youths gathered on the Temple Mount Thursday morning to protest Likud MK Moshe Feiglin's visit to the contested holy site.

Police arrested two youths for hurling stones toward the minister and an accompanying group of right-wing activists.

Authorities ordered Feiglin to leave the compound and worked to disperse the rioters.

In response to the incident, Feiglin charged that violent acts at the site are perpetuated by removing Jewish visitors from the Temple Mount and leaving the Muslim protesters.

"If there is a reason the Temple Mount is a barrel of explosives it is because even today it is proven that violence pays," he said on Facebook.

Feiglin has had various altercations with security personnel at the site.

The frequently violent Arab response to Jewish visitation rights to the Temple Mount has a long and contentious history, dating back to when the Wakf Muslim religious trust was given oversight of the holy site following the Six Day War in 1967.

Although the Supreme Court upheld Jewish prayer rights on the site, the court allows police to prevent any form of worship there if they believe such activities will incite a “disturbance to the public order.”

Right-wing Israeli politicians have repeatedly demanded Jewish sovereignty of the area, as well as greater access, to little avail.

MKs propose bill to allow Jewish prayer on Temple Mount

Labor and Likud members join bid to push controversial legislation to open up Temple Mount compound for Jewish prayer, currently permitted for only for Muslims.

Labor and Likud MKs have joined forces on a new bill that proposes to allow Jews to pray at the Temple Mount compound - for the first time since the destruction of the Second Temple, as Jews are currently barred from praying at the site.

MK Miri Regev (Likud) and MK Hilik Bar (Labor) are expected to introduce the bill for discussion in the Knesset. It aims to extend freedom of worship on the Temple Mount to the level allowed in Hebron's Cave of the Patriarchs, where Jews and Muslims share the holy site.

Last April, dozens of Arab youths, some masked, rioted on the Temple Mount, throwing stones and fire crackers at security forces deployed to the scene. The clashes led to the compound being closed to visitors and the arrests of dozens suspected of violent acts. Such scenes constantly reoccur in the compound.

Jordan Pressing Israel not to Allow Jewish Temple Mount Prayer

Jordanian ambassador to 'Palestine' reveals diplomatic war against new prayer bill, and vast financial network to Arabize Jerusalem.

10/21/14

Jordan's King Abdullah II is pressing Israel not to pass a bill allowing Jews to exercise their religious rights and pray on the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, a senior official of the Hashemite kingdom revealed on Tuesday.

Jordanian Ambassador to "Palestine" Khalid al-Shawabka told the Palestinian Arab Ma'an News Agency that a bill proposed by MK Miri Regev (Likud) dividing prayer time at the Mount, as is done in Hevron's Cave of Machpelah, is "unacceptable," calling the Al-Aqsa Mosque (often used as a euphemism for the entire Temple Mount) and Jerusalem "red lines."

Currently the Jordanian Waqf (Islamic trust) has de facto control of the site and pays the salaries of local staff. Al-Shawabka further revealed the Hashemite kingdom invests 7 million dinars ($9 million) into Jerusalem developmental projects every year through the Palestinian Authority (PA) ministry of endowment.

The figure is an important revelation, as the PA has no legal jurisdiction over the undivided capital of Israel - it is possible the "projects" refer to the 40,000 illegal Arab housing units in Jerusalem, which grow at a rate of roughly 800 per year.

Israel National News: Jordan Threatens to Revoke Peace Treaty Over Temple Mount

Jordan's government has threatened to revoke its 1994 peace treaty with Israel after the Temple Mount was temporarily closed to both Jews and Muslims on Thursday, in an attempt to calm tensions after an Arab terrorist shot Temple Mount activist Yehuda Glick.

Why Jerusalem’s Holiest Site Remains a Flashpoint

Fearing dangerous clashes following an assassination attempt on a right-wing rabbi advocating for greater Israeli access to Jerusalem's most contested holy precinct, Israeli authorities on Thursday took the extraordinary step of restricting access to the site — the first such closure in 14 years.

Muslim Cleric Finds Sympathy Toward Israel Will Not Be Tolerated—Jordan Arrests Him Anyway Even After He Recants For Advocating Jews Be Allowed On Temple Mount

A Jordanian Muslim cleric has been arrested for advocating Jewish prayer rights on the Temple Mount, just a week after he issued a public statement retracting the comments following a hail of criticism. In a video statement posted online on December 18, Salafi cleric Sheikh Yassin Al-Ajlouni said a place of worship for Jews should be established on the Temple Mount, noting its religious importance to Judaism - although he emphasized that the site should remain "under Hashemite [Jordanian] sovereignty and control," as per existing arrangements. "There should be a special place of worship for the Jews among the Israelis under Hashemite and Palestinian sovereignty, and in agreement with the Israeli regime," Al-Ajlouni said.

Jerusalem court upholds Jewish prayer on Temple Mount

Security services prohibit non-Muslims from praying or engaging in other forms of worship on the site, claiming such activity triggers Palestinian violence.

Activists hailed what they labeled as an historic victory on Monday, after the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court issued a ruling ostensibly backing claims that Jews be allowed to pray on the Temple Mount.

Activist Yehudah Glick had brought a law suit against the Israel Police for banning him for two years from visiting the site because of video evidence of him praying there.

Glick, who was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt last year by a Palestinian extremist, was banned from the Temple Mount between 2011 and 2013 after he was seen uttering a Jewish prayer at the site in a Channel 10 broadcast.

The security services prohibit non-Muslims from praying or engaging in other forms of worship on the Temple Mount, claiming that such activity inevitably triggers Palestinian violence.

The Supreme Court has previously upheld the theoretical right for Jews to pray at the site, although it has stated that the security services are permitted to take security considerations into account when deciding whether to allow non-Muslim prayer there.

On Sunday, Judge Malka Aviv said the police ban on Glick visiting the site was issued “without appropriate consideration, was arbitrary, and only out of concern for the consequences of the broadcast.

“There is nothing in the deeds of the plaintiff [Glick] that justified in any way the punishment that he received, not in the ban itself and not in the extended period [of the ban],” she said.

Glick was awarded NIS 500,000 in damages and NIS 150,000 in legal costs by the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court for the ban.

The judge insisted that Jews have a right to pray on the Temple Mount.

“The legal authorization of the defendant [the police] is, in accordance with the ruling, to be concerned for Jews being able to pray on the Temple Mount, and to act in a sweeping way in order to prevent Jews from praying on the Temple Mount,” the judge wrote.

Attorney Aviad Visoly who represented Glick said that Malka had effectively allowed Jews to pray on the Temple Mount.

“The court permitted [Jewish] prayer on the Temple Mount,” he said following the ruling. “Essentially, the court took the ruling of the Supreme Court regarding the right of Jews to pray at the Temple Mount, and implemented it in practice,” he explained.

“Starting from today, all Jews are allowed to pray on the Temple Mount. There is no longer any crime in prayer itself.”

Arnon Segel, a journalist and commentator on Temple Mount issues, expressed doubt, however, that Jewish prayer will now be freely permitted at the holy site.

Segel noted that the government has committed to upholding the so-called status quo over the Temple Mount not to allow non-Muslim prayer, something which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu re-committed to in November last year.

Hundreds Gather for Rally for Freedom of Worship on the Temple Mount

“These I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” (Isaiah 56:7)

Tuesday evening, Temple Mount Heritage Foundation founder and activist Rabbi Yehudah Glick led a demonstration at the Dung Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem protesting the recent closures of the Temple Mount to non-Muslims during the Ramadan holiday.

The Temple Mount Heritage Foundation, along with several other groups and organizations working to increase access on the Temple Mount, decided to hold a peaceful demonstration to protest the most recent closure of the Temple Mount, which will be lifted when Ramadan ends on July 17.

The Temple Mount, which is Judaism’s most holy site, is open year-round to Muslims without restrictions while non-Muslims are only allowed on the Mount during limited visiting times. However, even those limited hours were curtailed when the Israeli police made the decision last week to close the Temple Mount to non-Muslims for the remainder of the month of Ramadan for security reasons.

The decision was made following several incidents of Muslims harassing Jewish visitors to the Temple Mount. Ramadan is known as a time of increased violence across Israel, and this year was no exception.

After several terrorist attacks across the country couples with a rise in unrest on the Temple Mount, including Muslims following, shouting at and threatening Jewish visitors, the police decided to shut down the source of the disturbance – Jewish prayer.

Despite the peaceful nature of the rally, the Israeli police made several attempts to stop it from happening, first seeking to ban it entirely. However, attorneys for Temple Mount rights groups successfully appealed to the Israeli High Court, which ruled that the police could not stop the protesters from expressing themselves.

The police then insisted on changing the location of the protest, which had been set to take place outside the Mercy Gate, the traditional entrance of non-Muslim visitors to the site. The court agreed to the police’s request, authorizing the protest only at the entrance to the Dung Gate, which is generally used by Jews to enter the area of the Western Wall.

The time of the rally was also changed, and its length limited to 75 minutes, during a period when Muslims are generally not at prayer.

Several religious and political leaders were present at the event Tuesday evening, including Zephaniah Drori Rav, the rabbi of Kiryat Shmona, and Knesset member Oren Hazan. The protest was attended by several hundred supporters carrying signs and banners.

Speaking at the protest, Glick said that the closure of the site was capitulation to terrorism. “We see this as an escalation, because in the past Ramadans they would close it for three days,” he said. “Now this year they’re closing it for three weeks, and the situation on the Temple Mount is becoming unbearable because every single Jew who goes up the Temple Mount becomes a victim of harassment and violence and we have to put a stop to this.”

He explained that it was also a human rights issue. “We’re here calling out for the recognition that Jews are also human beings, and we’re here to protest against the apartheid on the Temple Mount, where there is a total difference between if you are a Muslim or you are any other person,” he said.

“And we’re here to call out the Israeli government to stop the discrimination against Jews and non-Muslims in general on the Temple Mount for freedom to pray, freedom to breathe, freedom to move your lips, freedom to bow down – freedom to just move with respect to all the other people on the Temple Mount.”

He added a message of peace: “The Temple Mount should be a symbol of world religion and tolerance.”

The Israeli Supreme Court has upheld Jewish prayer rights at the Temple Mount numerous times, but also allows police to prevent any form of worship there if they believe such activities will incite a “disturbance to the public order.”

Since Muslims deeply object to any non-Muslim prayer on the Temple Mount, which is controlled by the Islamic Waqf, any form of public prayer among Jews, including moving their lips in silent prayer or making swaying motions, is considered “public disturbance”. Those who are caught “praying” are stopped and often escorted out by Israeli police.

This, according to Glick, is pure discrimination against Jews and other non-Muslims. Speaking to Breaking Israel News earlier in July, Glick stated: “A democratic society must never give in to violence and be determined to protect the civil rights of its civilians and visitors, otherwise the slope will be very steep and, God forbid, endless.”

Bill Calling for Non-Muslim Prayer on the Temple Mount Brings Prophetic Vision One Step Closer

The Third Holy Temple is at the core of the Jewish view of the End of Days. A new bill was recently proposed by member of Knesset Bezalal Smotrich that, if passed, would allow Jews and Christians to pray on the Temple Mount.

WATCH: Clashes break out on Temple Mount after Jews bow down

Jews praying on the site were surrounded by Muslims chanting 'allahu akbar'; physical altercations erupted between Israel Police and Muslims and Waqf officials.

A protest erupted on Tuesday morning on the Temple Mount after several Jews visiting the site began prostrating themselves and began reciting Jewish prayers which are strictly forbidden under current agreements between Israel and the Waqf.

The prayer provoked Muslims nearby to gather around the Jewish visitors and begin chanting “Allahu akbar” and “with our blood we will redeem Al-Aqsa.” The Jewish Temple Mount activists claim that they were assaulted by Waqf officials and the Muslim worshippers. While police said that they were not aware of any violent behaviour and that the exchanges were purely verbal, video footage from the incident proved that physical altercations did indeed occur.

video http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4796408,00.html

The protesters calmed down after the police ejected the praying Jewish people from the area. Eight Jewish visitors, whom the police claim violated the rules, were ejected from the Temple Mount area. About 250 Jewish visitors have come to the Temple Mount so far, and the police presence on the mount and in the surrounding area has been high, aimed at keeping the sensitive zone's routine intact.

The police issued a response: "During visits to the Temple Mount this morning, 527 visitors including 400 tourists entered (the complex). Eight Jewish visitors who violated visitation rules were removed from Temple Mount's grounds. After the final Jewish visitor group left Temple Mount, Muslims began shouting at the same Jews, who had been removed from the Temple Mount for violating the site's rules. Police officers and Border Police distanced the Jews and took action to prevent disruptions and return order to the site. The police is prepared, as it has been throughout the holiday, to allow all visitors of all religions and ethnicities to practice (their) religion and rituals freely. The police will act decisively against everyone who tries to violate the status quo."

On Monday, the Jordan warned that “serious consequences” could arise from what it described as "the invasion of settler groups and Israeli occupying forces in the Al-Aqsa mosque." Jordanian Minister for Media Affairs and government spokesperson Mohammad al-Momani said that what Israel and the Jewish visitors ascending Temple Mount are doing is acting against Muslim worshippers in the mosque and is a breach of law and international trust.

Al-Momani further demanded that the Israeli authorities immediately stop the visits and prevent the entry of Jews and Israeli security forces to the compound. Moreover, he demanded that Israel allow Palestinian worshippers to enter the mosque and perform their ritual practices.

MK Glick to Petition High Court Against Netanyahu Temple Mount Obstruction

Rebellion in the Likud ranks: On Wednesday, MK Yehuda Glick announced his plan to petition the Supreme Court against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the latter’s barring of Knesset members and cabinet ministers from ascending too the Temple Mount, Srugim reported. The prohibition has taken effect close to the start of the current wave of terror, dubbed “the Al Aqsa intifada” by the Arabs, who claim to have started the violence in response to a Jewish conspiracy to destroy the Temple Mount mosque.

A suit by a rank and file MK against the leader of his party is extremely rare. Should Glick persist with his petition he is likely to be sanctioned by his Knesset faction, the Likud, and be barred from speaking from the podium and submitting bills. He might also be dismissed from the Knesset, should the leadership be able to enlist sufficient support from the members. He could also be tried by the Likud internal court.

Before assuming the legislator’s mantle, Glick made his living as tour guide on the Temple Mount, and in October 24 was the victim of an assassination attempt because of his promotion of Jewish access to the holy site.

This is the second time Netanyahu has blocked MKs from entering the sacred compound. During the 19th Knesset, the PM prevented MKs Uri Ariel and Shuli Mualem (Habayit Hayehudi) and Moshe Feiglin and Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) from ascending. The reason Glick is irate this time is the fact that Jerusalem police have announced they no longer see the need to stop MKs from entering the Temple Mount, but Netanyahu persists in his refusal to open the gates to them.

When he became a member of Knesset, about half a year ago, Glick justified the prohibition, which was pinned on attempts by Arab MKs to stir up riots on the Temple Mount. The last time Glick has been to the site was on the day before his swearing in as MK.
