Christian Groups Petition Hobby Lobby Over HHS Lawsuit

Christian activists are demanding Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. drop its lawsuit opposing the Health and Human Services “preventive services” mandate.

The Rev. Lance Schmitz, pastor of the Capitol Hill Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City, Okla., was turned away from Hobby Lobby's headquarters Thursday when he attempted to deliver a petition.

“I thought they'd let me drop off the package,” Schmitz said. “I thought a Christian business would be interested in hearing from a pastor with a petition signed by thousands of people of faith. I guess Hobby Lobby is more interested in using their faith to score political points than in finding a way to ensure that its female employees get the health care they need.”

The pastor said more than 80,000 people had signed copies of a petition circulated nationwide by the online Christian group Faithful America, and women's rights group UltraViolet.

Got to that point and had to stop. The Rev. Lance Schmitz does not appear to be a man of God appointed by the Lord. For starters he has the title Reverend, what is that? Next he supports the murder of children and the worship of BAAL. Just what "faith" are these petitioners of? Sure isn’t the faith found in the Bible.

The UltraViolet group is an ABORTION activist group. Good Job Rev. Lance Schmitz, its always good to know those who hook up with BAAL in opposition to Jesus Christ.

SO I’m actually quite happy that Hobby Lobby turned this Satan worshipping child sacrificing Cretan away.

Not that I ever endorsed the "religious right"/moral majority, but ever since they were founded in 1979, mainline Churchianity's next generation slowly but surely turned to the LEFT. I saw a special on PBS one time profiling the Emergent Church, and the current generation pretty much admitted they are angry at the so-called moral majority's agendas "bringing politics" into the arena, so they wanted to "try something new".

Anyhow, as you can see, we're seeing a fusion, or a "coming together" with evil within mainline Churchianity from the seeds the moral majority planted way back. Of course, as we all know, 30% of the MM members are Catholic, and like 80% or so of them are Charismatics. So they had an evil agenda to begin with.

I guess it's probably no surprise you're seeing mainline Churchianity like in the OP stated supporting all these leftist, wicked agendas now.

Hobby Lobby Wins Injunction Stopping Enforcement of HHS Mandate

Today, a federal court granted Hobby Lobby a preliminary injunction against the HHS abortion-drug mandate. The injunction prevents the Obama administration from enforcing the mandate against the Christian company, which does not want to be compelled to pay for birth control or drugs that may cause abortions.

This victory comes less than a month after a landmark decision by the full 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 5-3 that Hobby Lobby can exercise religion under the First Amendment and is likely to win its case against the mandate. That decision helped the Christian craft store not be force to pay fines while its lawsuit continues.

“The tide has turned against the HHS mandate,” said Kyle Duncan, General Counsel with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, and lead attorney for Hobby Lobby. “This is a major victory for not only Hobby Lobby, but the religious liberty of all for-profit businesses.”

U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton issued a preliminary injunction and stayed the case until Oct. 1 to give the Obama administration time to appeal the decision.

In an opinion read from the bench, the court said, “There is a substantial public interest in ensuring that no individual or corporation has their legs cut out from under them while these difficult issues are resolved.”

Duncan says there are now 63 separate lawsuits challenging the HHS mandate. The Becket Fund led the charge against the unconstitutional HHS mandate. The Becket Fund currently represents: Hobby Lobby, Wheaton College, East Texas Baptist University, Houston Baptist University, Colorado Christian University, the Eternal Word Television Network, Ave Maria University, and Belmont Abbey College.

Before today’s decision, Kristina Arriaga Executive Director of the pro-life legal group The Becket Fund, told LifeNews: “Hobby Lobby is the largest business to challenge the HHS Mandate in court.  And the 10th Circuit decision was the result of the rare opportunity to present the case directly to the full court instead of a smaller panel and it represents the first definitive appellate ruling against the mandate,” Arriaga said. “And, while the 10th Circuit’s decision helped spare Hobby Lobby from exposure to tremendous government fines scheduled to begin just days after the court ruled, its opinion is an true victory for the many other religious business owners who find themselves facing the same “Hobson’s choice”– as the Court of Appeals called it – as Hobby Lobby’s Green family; that is, follow the law or follow your conscience.”

Arriaga said the battle today is be an even greater milestone in this fight because, “unless the government has a sudden change of heart – which is unlikely – the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately have to decide this case.”

Hobby Lobby could have paid as much as $1.3 million each day in fines for refusing to pay for birth control or abortion-causing drugs under the mandate.

In December, a two-judge panel of the 10th Circuit denied Hobby Lobby’s request to temporarily stop enforcement of the abortion pill mandate. Now, nine 10th Circuit judges will hear Hobby Lobby’s case. Arguments are expected to take place this Spring.

The mandate would force the Christian-owned-and-operated company to provide the “morning-after pill” and “week-after pill” in its health insurance plan, or face crippling fines up to $1.3 million per day.

“The Green family is disappointed with this ruling,” said Duncan. “They simply asked for a temporary halt to the mandate while their appeal goes forward, and now they must seek relief from the United States Supreme Court. The Greens will continue to make their case on appeal that this unconstitutional mandate infringes their right to earn a living while remaining true to their faith.”

Previously, the 10th Circuit judges denied the motion calling the religious burden to the Green family “indirect and attenuated.”

The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma and U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton issued a ruling rejecting Hobby Lobby’s request to block the mandate. Judge Heaton said that the company doesn’t qualify for an exemption because it is not a church or religious group.

“Plaintiffs have not cited, and the court has not found, any case concluding that secular, for-profit corporations such as Hobby Lobby and Mardel have a constitutional right to the free exercise of religion,” the ruling said.

Heaton wrote that “the court is not unsympathetic” to the company’s desire to not pay for abortion-causing drugs but he said the Obamacare law “results in concerns and issues not previously confronted by companies or their owners.”

The appeals brief reads in part: “n less than six weeks, [the Green family] must either violate their faith by covering abortion-causing drugs, or be exposed to severe penalties—including fines of up to $1.3 million per day, annual penalties of about $26 million and exposure to private suits.”

“The district court accepted that the Green family engages in a religious exercise by refusing to cover abortion-causing drugs in their self-funded health plan. There was thus no question that the Green family engages in ‘religious exercise,’” it adds. “[T]he Supreme Court has long rejected any distinction between “direct” and “indirect” burdens in evaluating whether regulations infringe religious exercise.”

Duncan said the judge’s decision did not question that the Green family has sincere religious beliefs forbidding them from providing abortion-causing drugs. The court ruled, however, that those beliefs were only “indirectly” burdened by the mandate’s requirement that [Hobby Lobby] provide free coverage for specific, abortion-inducing drugs in [the company’s] self-funded insurance plan.

The mandate has engendered strong opposition from pro-life groups and Catholic and evangelical Christian companies that do not want to be compelled to pay for drugs for employees that may cause abortions.

The most recent polling data from December 2012 shows Americans support a religious exemption to the mandate.

Ultimately, while this court ruling may be a bit of good news, at the same time what disturbs me is THIS - all this is doing in the long run is pushing ecumenism. Pretty soon, a potentially big coalition of "evangelicals" from *all* "denominations" will be holding hands, and then throw in other faiths like Islam, Judaism, etc singing koom-bay-yah in order to fight against this.

We saw it with the whole "culture wars" movement during the Reagan, Clinton, and Bush Jr years, and ultimately saw the rotten fruits and destruction of it when all was said and done.

As for the abortion pills itself - they shouldn't even be on the market, period.

And you also have THIS...

Georgetown Insurance to Cover Contraception
7/18/13

After revisions to the Affordable Care Act in late June, Georgetown student and faculty health insurance will cover contraception through United Healthcare beginning August 15.

The Obama administration’s final ACA regulations require insurance companies to pay directly for contraceptive services for those covered by nonprofit organizations that oppose contraception on religious grounds. The ACA mandates that employee group health plans and fully insured student health plans cover preventive care and screenings for women, including Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive methods, sterilization procedures, and patient education and counseling, at no extra cost. Employees and students with ACA healthcare will be covered by Aetna, Kaiser, United Healthcare or CareFirst beginning in January 2014.

“These regulations give us the opportunity to reconcile our religious identity and our commitment to providing access to affordable healthcare,” University President John J. DeGioia wrote in a campus-wide email announcing the policy change Thursday.

Though students will be able to pay for contraception using Georgetown health insurance off campus, the Student Health Center will not begin prescribing medication used for contraception, as mandated by the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Services.

While Georgetown accepted the new accommodation for religious institutions, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops rejected it July 3, stating that the definition of eligibility was too narrow to guarantee religious freedom. USCCB objected to the implication that circumventing religious institutions through their insurance providers upheld Catholic moral values.

“We are concerned as pastors with the freedom of the Church as a whole — not just for the full range of its institutional forms, but also for the faithful in their daily lives — to carry out the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ,” USCCB President Cardinal Timothy Dolan said in a press release.

Right to Life Marketing Chair Evelyn Flashner (COL ’15) agreed that the university’s decision contradicted its Catholic identity.

“The university is violating its own principles as a Catholic institution on this issue … Georgetown is diverging from the opinion of the Catholic Church,” Flashner said. “The new accommodation does not solve all the problems, and according to the USCCB, it doesn’t present a feasible version of religious liberty.”

Flashner used an analogy from USCCB member Bishop William Lori to explain the accommodation’s shortcomings.

“There is a Jewish deli that doesn’t sell anything but kosher meat, but the government says, ‘You have to sell non-kosher meat,’” Flashner said. “Everyone freaks out, but the government says, ‘Never mind, I take it back. Instead of having you sell kosher meat, we’re going to put a little kiosk in the middle of your store and sell non-kosher meat.’”

H*yas for Choice President Laura Narefsky (COL’14), however, applauded the announcement.

“I think the College of Cardinals is in a very privileged position, in that they are not directly responsible for the health and well-being of so many people,” Narefsky said. “Georgetown has a responsibility not just as a member of the Catholic Church, but also as a research and educational institute with thousands of people who are and are not part of the Catholic Church."

Narefsky said that the accommodation was a step in the right direction toward reproductive justice.

“Georgetown doesn’t have to finance or endorse it, but they realized that they can’t maintain these archaic and out-of-touch views on modern healthcare,” Narefsky said. “It shows progress and ability to move forward on a position that a lot of people think is a stalemate.”

Pope Francis Asks Hobby Lobby Owners Key Question During Private Meeting

 Huh

Days after discussing the U.S. Catholic bishops’ fight over contraception with President Obama, Pope Francis met Monday with members of the Green family, the Oklahoma billionaires whose company, Hobby Lobby, took their challenge to Obama’s contraception mandate to the Supreme Court last week.

The pope met with Obama on Thursday for the first time, touching on some hot-button disputes between the White House and U.S. Catholic bishops.

A Vatican statement after the meeting said that the two men talked about issues including “the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection,” a veiled reference to Obama’s disputes with the American bishops (and the Green family) over the administration’s contraception mandate under Obamacare.

Obama later downplayed the contraception discussions with Francis, telling reporters that he and the pope didn’t spend much time on “social schisms.” He said he and the Vatican’s secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, discussed “briefly the issue of making sure that conscience and religious freedom was observed in the context of applying the law.”

The Greens are in Rome for the launch of one of their traveling exhibits, “Verbum Domini II” (Latin for “The Word of the Lord”).

“The purpose of the meeting was to thank the pope for the loan of items to the exhibit from the Vatican museum and library,” said Jennifer Sheran of DeMoss, the Atlanta public relations firm that represents the Greens. “The pope did ask how the (Hobby Lobby) case was progressing.”

Eighteen members of the Green family met with the pope, Sheran said, as well as 10 members from the American Bible Society. The meeting lasted 30 minutes.

The exhibit located at the Braccio di Carlo Magno museum runs April 2 to June 22 and includes 200 ancient and rare biblical texts and artifacts. The head of the Museum of the Bible, which oversees the Green collection traveling exhibits, also joined the gathering with the pope.

This is the second time items from the Green Collection have been on display in Vatican City. Their first display appeared during Lent and Easter season in 2012, but Pope Benedict XVI was traveling during the Greens’ visit.

THIS

Although I can't point my finger directly why, this whole USSC court case "against" them over the whole contraceptives issue just smells a big stink - it's as if the Illuminati minions are painting a picture of how it's THEM that are the "persecuted Christians" in this world. But en yet forget about all of those working/middle class Christians that are barely making ends meet(and this same crowd has gotten suckered to throw their hard earned money away to these Babel church buildings), and forget about all of these poor Christians in these 3rd world countries are that persecuted daily(including in Rick Warren's Purpose Driven country Rwanda).

Which is why it doesn't surprise me if any of these "hit pieces"-looking articles(ie-like one put out by that New Age Mother Jones magazine) has at lease some truth to it.

NOW I get it!

I haven't followed this too much, so I'm not up on the Green family. I just assumed they were protestants, not Catholic.

David Green...

Quote
Green is the son of a preacher and comes from a family of preachers.[4] Green claims to have built his business squarely on biblical principles[2] and attributes his success to his faith in God. He has taken a public stance against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act because of its inclusion of a provision allowing access to the morning-after pill.[5]

Green takes half of Hobby Lobby's total pretax earnings and commits it directly to a portfolio of evangelical ministries and as of 2012 it has donated an estimated $500 million.[6] This includes a $10.5 million gift to Jerry Falwell's Liberty University in 2004, and $70 million to bail out Oral Roberts University in 2007. He has also put nearly 1.4 billion copies of gospel literature in homes in more than 100 countries, mostly in Africa and Asia.[7]

Green and his wife Barbara have also signed up to The Giving Pledge.[4]

It's all smoke and mirrors!

This shouldn't even warrant an article. It's not news, but rather more like propaganda.

Nothing but infighting between political parties under the guise of religion.
