Planned Parenthood, ACLU create front organization to defeat pro-life legislation in Mississippi


The organization “Mississippians for Healthy Families” is simply a front organization for Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, who are attempting to prevent a pro-life amendment from being added to the state constitution, according to a state pro-life organization.

The pro-life organization sponsoring the proposed amendment, Yes on 26, recently erected a website exposing the fact that the deeply pro-abortion organizations are behind what, judging by its name, might at first glance appear to be a pro-family organization.

Yes on 26 obtained a copy of the Mississippians for Healthy Families’ Statement of Organization for a Political Committee from the Secretary of State’s office, which lists Nsombi Lambright, Kay Scott, and Barry Chase as the organization’s officers.

Lambright is the Executive Director of the ACLU of Mississippi; Scott is the CEO of Planned Parenthood Southeast, which covers Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi; and Chase is the President of Memphis Regional Planned Parenthood in Tennessee.

Chase’s clinic was the target of a Live Action sting operation that made headlines in 2009 when one of his employees coached a woman posing as a 14-year-old girl to lie about the age of her boyfriend, who the girl said was 31.

A space on the form which requests a description of the purpose of the Committee and the identification of “affiliated or connected organizations” is left blank.

Lambright is listed as the director and Scott as the treasurer, but the contact person is Stan Flint, a professional lobbyist with the United States Strategy Group.

Comments on the Yes on 26 website about the nature of Mississippians for Healthy Families draw attention to the financial investment that Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, has in the campaign.

“Abortion, to put it plainly, is a very lucrative business, and this has been true from the beginning. By last count, Planned Parenthood (a tax-exempt organization!) has $951 million in total assets,” the website notes. “Kay Scott and her partners in the abortion industry have a very good reason to make sure Amendment 26 doesn’t bring an end to their payday in Mississippi.”

US judge temporarily blocks Mississippi abortion law

A federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked enforcement of a Mississippi law that could shut down the only abortion clinic in the state.

U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan in Jackson issued a temporary restraining order the day the new law took effect.

He set a July 11 hearing to determine whether to block the law for a longer time.

“Though the debate over abortion continues, there exists legal precedent the court must follow,” Jordan wrote.

The law requires anyone performing abortions at the state’s only clinic to be an OB-GYN with privileges to admit patients to a local hospital. Such privileges can be difficult to obtain, and the clinic contends the mandate is designed to put it out of business. A clinic spokeswoman, Betty Thompson, has said the two physicians who do abortions there are OB-GYNs who travel from other states.

The clinic, Jackson Women’s Health Organization, filed a lawsuit seeking to block the law. The suit says the admitting privileges requirement is not medically necessary and is designed to put the clinic out of business.

If Jackson Women’s Health Organization closes, Mississippi would be the only state without an abortion clinic.

When Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed the law, House Bill 1390, he said he wants Mississippi to be “abortion-free.”

“Gov. Bryant believes HB 1390 is an important step in strengthening abortion regulations and protecting the health and safety of women,” Bryant spokesman Mick Bullock said in a statement Sunday night. “The federal judge’s decision is disappointing, and Gov. Bryant plans to work with state leaders to ensure this legislation properly takes effect as soon as possible.”

In the order, Jordan wrote: “Plaintiffs have offered evidence — including quotes from significant legislative and executive officers — that the Act’s purpose is to eliminate abortions in Mississippi. They likewise submitted evidence that no safety or health concerns motivated its passage. This evidence has not yet been rebutted.”

Jordan also wrote that Jackson Women’s Health Organization is “the only regular provider of abortions in Mississippi, and as of the Act’s effective date, JWHO cannot comply with its requirements.”

The Center for Reproductive Rights, based in New York, helped file the lawsuit for the Mississippi clinic. The center’s president and CEO, Nancy Northup, said in statement Sunday: “Today’s decision reaffirms the fundamental constitutional rights of women in Mississippi and ensures the Jackson Women’s Health Organization can continue providing the critical reproductive health care that they have offered to women for the last 17 years.

“The opponents of reproductive rights in the Mississippi legislature have made no secret of their intent to make legal abortion virtually disappear in the state of Mississippi,” Northup said. “Their hostility toward women, reproductive health care providers, and the rights of both would unquestionably put the lives and health of countless women at risk of grave harm.”

Republican Rep. Sam Mims of McComb, who sponsored the new law, said it is designed to protect the health of every woman who has an abortion.

“We know for a fact that this is a serious procedure,” Mims said in an interview Sunday. “Women can have complications.”

Mississippi physicians who perform fewer than 10 abortions a month can avoid having their offices regulated as an abortion clinic, and thus avoid restrictions in the new law. The Health Department said it doesn’t have a record of how many physicians perform fewer than 10 abortions a month. Clinic operators say almost all the abortions in the state are done in their building.

The clinic says if it closes, most women would have to go out of state to terminate a pregnancy — something that could create financial problems for people in one of the poorest states in the nation. From Jackson, it’s about a 200-mile drive to clinics in New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; or Memphis, Tenn.

Mississippi May Close Down Its Last Abortion Facility

The last remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, has received notice from the Health Department that it intends to revoke the clinic’s operating license after an inspection found that it is has not complied with a state law that requires that all abortionists maintain local hospital privileges.

Closure of the clinic may take up to six weeks until a hearing can be held and a formal revocation can take place. JWHO will be allowed to continue operating until the hearing can be held.

“We are confident that these are the final days for the last abortion clinic in Mississippi. We look forward to the moment when it can no longer unjustly take innocent lives or place the lives and health of woman at risk,” said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation. “If that abortion clinic’s abortionists are so bad that no hospital will have them, then the clinic is just too dangerous to operate.”

Newman continued, “Women deserve better than to be left to fend for themselves in the event of abortion complications while the abortionist flies off to another state leaving others to clean up his mess. Without an abortion clinic preying on women while they are vulnerable, women will have the opportunity to seek legitimate medical services and other community resources readily available to them that will not leave them suffering in an ER without proper continuity of care.”

Clinic owner Diane Derzis is certainly no stranger to legal problems. Last year she was ordered to shut down her New Woman All Women abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, after inspectors found 76 pages of violations following the hospitalization of three patients in one day for abortion complications.

As she was in the process of losing her dangerous Birmingham clinic, Derzis filed suit to block the new Mississippi law. She received an injunction that extended the deadline for compliance while she sought hospital privileges for her three out-of-state abortionists. That deadline passed on January 11, 2012, without JWHO’s abortionists obtaining hospital privileges.

On January 16, state inspectors visited JWCO and found them in non-compliance. The Derzis received a letter Friday, January 25, from the Health Department notifying her that the State planned to revoke its operating license.

The Jackson area has seven hospitals where JWHO’s three out-of-state abortionists could seek privileges. Those abortionists are Willie Parker of Washington, D.C., Bruce Elliot Norman of South Carolina, and Gary Burks Broadnax of Georgia. The trio did not apply at two facilities because those hospitals are operated by religious groups that were unlikely to grand privileges to abortionists. The other five hospitals rejected their applications.

A fourth abortionist employed by the abortion clinic had hospital privileges, but those expired July 27, 2012, and have not been renewed.

A Health Department hearing is expected within a month. Meanwhile, Derzis continues to challenge the Constitutionality of the law, a desperate effort that is not expected to succeed.

“Essentially, when we boil things down beyond the rhetoric, Derzis is fighting to keep abortion dangerous. That is an appalling betrayal of women, who will be better off without this predatory clinic in their midst,” said Newman.
