Yes, while this is true - at the same time, the context behind what Jesus Christ says here was concerning the Pharisees(at the same time, that is).
The Pharisees, as we all know, were self-righteous people who lived by the law and the commandments of men. I believe what Jesus was trying to tell them that it's what ultimately COMES OUT OF THE HEART that defiles the man...
Mat 15:7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
Mat 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Mat 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Mat 15:10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
Mat 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Mar 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mar 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mar 7:23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
And ultimately, this is why Jesus Christ shed his blood on the cross - b/c it is through HIS BLOOD which covereth our sins if we believeth on his name and his finished works on the cross.
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Col 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
Col 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Please bear with me here - I know it's not man, but the Holy Ghost that should be teaching here, but wanted to point out the context of the "looking at a woman lus-tfully is committing adultery in our hearts" passage. I myself watch the football games during their respective seasons, and yes, I won't lie to you that when I see female reporters like Erin Andrews on tv, my heart ends up lusting over them. Not that I want to endulge in this, but at the same time...
Rom_3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Allow me to reiterate. By committing adultery in my heart, I mean watching pornography (which was, of course, coupled with self-sodomy). It was a big addiction I had before I got saved, and I relapsed twice during my marriage, (the second time being the latest one that I just mentioned).
And I'm not just talking about naked women stuff here, either. It went beyond that. This is stuff that, as a Christian, you KNOW is wrong. That you KNOW is evil. Yet I did it anyway. I was 100% totally without excuse...
Hebrews 10:26-27
"For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries."
That's what I meant.
I certainly don't want to trust in my works "in reverse" (rather than trusting in my works to get me to heaven and reject Christ's shed blood, trusting that my works damn me to hell and reject Christ's shed blood) but it kinda would explain the situation, no?
